    Brainstorm Idea Time!

    Floating Cities, D&D rules.

How many different methods can we think of to get a city to float in the air and be stable.

First on the list would be magical items, such as immovable rods or wonderous items built like an immovable rod.

Second would be using elementals like in Ebberon

    Any other ideas?

An island rich in cavorite/magnets/handwavium, which is meddled with by miners in such a fashion that it causes the island to rise up into the air until a certain point. It is kept geosynchronous with the Earth, and due to the atmospheric and geological disturbances cause by the sudden uprooting, now has a massive whirlpool and constant storm beneath it, and is constantly foggy.

One hell of a Reverse Gravity.

Or a very small planet with a low field of gravity where the sky happens to be geocentric orbit (makes sense with the size of most campaigns).

The city located on a rock is lifted high by a huge continuous spout of diarrhea spewing from the ass of a colossal being lying on a ground in a canyon.

I'd show you a diagram, but this is a SFW board.

Sharn: City of Towers has a Wonderous Architecture called Immovable Buttress... Basically, it's a supersized Immovable Rod built specifically for anchoring impossible structures.

Beyond that, you could build a city on permanent Walls of Force. If you have enough evil necromancers or death clerics, you could have flying vampires hold it up. Bigby's Hands would be useful for hefting the city and defense.

Certain stones that form underground are weightless. Acutely, they have a negative weight. Freed of the bonds of earth this floatstone will rise to a height of about one hundred meters and drift on air currents.

Some hills rich with this unnatural stone have ripped free from the earth and taken to the air, forming the basis for the first flying cities.

Airships make use of the properties of floatstone as well, though highly pure floatstone needed for there construction is rare.

Average floatstone: 1 GP per -1 pound weight. 12 cubic inches per -1 pound weight. This low quality floatstone is common enough to form the foundations of cities, but it takes quite a bit to float even a small amount of weight.

Quality floatstone: 10gp per -1 pound of weight. 6 cubic inches per -1 pound of weight. This floatstone is pure and compact enough to provide the floatstone core for a airship that doesn't use up massive amounts of space.

Pure floatstone. 50 GP per -1 pound weight. 1 cubic inch per -1 pound weight. This gleaming crystal is rare and valuable, able to reduce weight in far less space then any other floatstone.

Floatstone counts normaly vs. encumbrance, but must be secured to keep it from floating away. Carrying more then half your weight + carried weight in Floatstone provides you with a +10 to Jump and Climb checks, -5 to tumble and makes it impossible to sink in water.

Carrying more then 85% your weight + encumbrance in floatstone allows you to automatically succeed at most climb checks and provides +25 to Jump checks. Tumbling on the ground is impossible, and you may stand on water.

Strapping more then your weight + encumbrance in floatstone to your body causes you to float helplessly roughly 100m in the air. This is why airships have anchors and sails. If you find yourself in this position, carefully discard small amounts of floatstone until you start to sink.

    Here's a totally novel idea:

The city is held aloft due to pressure variance in the atmosphere causing the breathable atmosphere inside the sealed interior of the city being a lifting gas.

    Alternatively: Lots of hydrogen/helium balloons.

1001 enslaved poltergeists hold the city aloft.

Nine Saints, entombed within the foundations, pull the city into a air as their bones attempt to Ascend unto Heaven.

Once, with the armies of his enemies upon him, a great king made a bargain with a powerful demon. 'Protect my city and in return, you shall have my soul.' So the City was lifted high, high into the air; out of reach of even the mightiest bowman. The king has long since been snatched away to hell - but the city still remains, forgotten forever in the clouds.

The city is lifted by 10000 hydrophobes -special wizards neurotically scared of water. The city flies but only as long as there's water beneath.

My friends and I came up with something like this once. There is a kind of weed like flying algae that grows in clumps; their photosynthetic process fills bladders with a lighter-than-air gas, allowing them to float and thereby grow close to the sun.

They are fed on by a species of flying cow, who live on the underside of islands. A combination of these plants anchored to the surface of the islands and the flatulence of these cows captured in pockets within the islands' crust keeps them afloat. People mine for cow fart in much the same way we mine for natural gas.

It was a fairly ridiculous campaign with silly steampunk technology and Last Exile flying.

Awizarddititium. It can be used in damn near everything for any result. No material is better suited for the purpose, no matter what the purpose in question is. A common component in artifacts. While one might think awizarddititium is rare and expensive, one would be both correct and incorrect. It is known for manifesting itself in the hands of damn near anybody for little apparent reason other than that its appearance would be dramatic, and also for being extremely difficult to find for no apparent reason. For these reasons, the exact properties and the market value of awizarddiditium are difficult to pin down over the long term.

    Power Word: Cut It Out
    Transmutation
    Leve: Sor/Wiz 3, Clr 4
    Comp: Vocal, Somatic
    Casting Time: Instant
    Range: 30 Ft
    Duration 1 Hour/Level
    Saving Throw: Will Negates

The caster raises his hand to a creature, with a pointed finger, and announces 'Cut It Out.' If the target creature fails the will save, the creature removes itself from combat. If the creature is attacked during this time, it rejoins combat. If the creature passes its will save, it focuses its attention on the caster until it is attacked by another target. If casted on an object, the object is repulsed for 1d6 per caster level rounds. This may cause levitation in some objects.

...sure, I just wanted an excuse to post this, so I slapped on the levitation thing. But, it is still in the spirit of the spell.

a contraption of ten thousand seats for ten thousand wizards with a pool in the middle filled with mercury. They spend their entire life sitting on in one of the chairs powering the floating disk that keeps the city aloft. For the most part they are lvl 1-3 wizards with force spells. They take shifts (so there are actually more than 10k wizards) to allow for food and sleep but little else.
(yes, I almost totally ripped off 40k. kind of cool though)

    Well.
My D&D group really wanted an airship, so I grabbed that airship book/pdf thingie that has been out for a while and came to the same question: How to make a flying continent?

I ended up introducing a powerful magic reagent in form of a metal, called Oricalcum (not the one from the immortals handbook).
I reasoned that Oricalcum, due to its enormous magic potency, raised the continent into the air a few centuries ago - not to come down yet.
The players later found out that a ritual caused this, by "awakening" the oricalcum.
We had a few sidequests about the stuff, finding out that it can substitute most material components, but also gives off a harmful radiation.
The last adventure on the flying continent dealt with a hostile takeover by some evil force, which intended to break the spell and make the continent come down on the planet.

    The players liked it.

Just make sure your fortress is airtight; and build it on the back of a continent-sized snapping turtle.
