To counter the faggotry from that "hurr durr I maed my Paladin fall" thread, I propose an epic Lawful Good thread.

As anybody who isn't a 12 year old with a penchant for spouting the words "Moralfag!" knows, Lawful Good, when done right, is powered by Gar and Righteous Fury. It's about standing up for what's right, it's about not taking shit from evil, it's about having principles that you REFUSE to back down from when things are looking grim, it's about believing in a world where the law protects people...all people...equally, so they can be free to live their lives without fear. It's about being a man.

Let's have a Lawful Good thread, gentlemen, where we discuss our epic stories of heroic badassery. Let's show those chaotic stupid fags that there are still heroes in the world.

    Pic related.

A gnome came out and said "what have you done to my experiment!" and I was all "Oh, I am very sorry let me pay you back. Reached for my hand crossbow and shot him in the head with sneak attack. You know now that I think about it Johnathan Jostar was pretty motherfucking GAR Lawful Good. I mean he was the epitome of the UNHAND ME RUFFIAN english gent, he took down 4 (armed) men on his own AND unarmed simply because he was a big man and good at rugby, and his reasons for braving the dangerous streets at that hour were so noble that they made one of the men he trounced (who turned out to be the king of the underworld) cry MANLY TEARS and vow to follow him to the ends of the earth.

I was a Paladin in Ravenloft. I actually started along that super-paladin prestige class, the one that lets you eventually make the opposite of a sinkhole of evil and call out the local leading evil. And it of course also makes you ping their radar even worse than normal.
I actually lived, kinda, and didn't (to my knowledge) fall. Then again, that campaign only lasted a semester. Also, I say I lived, but we also had a one-off for the last session where we were transported to a magically enclosed space with werewolves. The werewolves (freaking gold-vulnerable) did of course finish us all off, but that was the point of that session anyways.

The Joestars are essentially the only survivng Ripple users, and it often skips entire generations at a time for no explainable reason. Also, shortly after the Stands are introduced and Dio is killed (permanently this time) The World kind of accidentally resets the entire thing and the storyline shunts into a parallel universe.

Also excuse the shitty translations on the two Jojo's pages, they're from a fan-translation.

If I remember correctly, oldfag JoJo explains that Stands ARE hamon (although they seem to havenone of the previous restrictions that hamon had). He calls it "yuuhamon" which means "ghostly hamon" in moonspeak. Oh, and hamon is moonspeak for the ripple technique. Araki probably just had oldfag JoJo say that to preserve continuity and could give less of a fuck about part 1 and 2, though, since part 3 was his real big break.

Warhammer Fantasy RP. Group is a midgety noble clad in heavy armour, female elf who was the best fighter (FUCK elves), human fighter, and Britann... I mean, Bretonian girl aspiring to become a knight (this last one is my character).

We get to a vampire´s castle, blah blah blah, loli vampire wants us to kill the Count. But first, she robs us of our clothes and equipment, and then, as we stand in her room naked, she says: "Now, call me mistress."

Everybody does, one by one... except the Bretonnian girl. The whole group turns to look at me. The DM gets that nasty smile of his on...

    "Say it."

My group (~lvl 8 party) came across a small village that was about to come under the attack of an orc raid, and the villagers were torn on what to do. If they stayed, the orcs would mercilessly slaughter them, and if they fled, then the ones who would not be hunted down by the orcs would have died many horrible ways out in the unforgiving wilderness. As they had nothing to offer our adventuring party in return for our assistance, the group decided it was best to just move on, regretful that it was. They were of a combination chaotics and neutrals alignment. I was a Lawful Good fighter, and I would not be persuaded to leave.

The group, laughing as they left, took bets on how long it would take me to succumb under the green tide that was descending upon the town. They retreated to a safe distance out in the wilderness, while I was left alone to organize the 50 or so men, women, and children into some symbol of a fighting force. They had pitchforks, shovels, pots, pans, and other household objects. Dusk fell upon the village, and all was quiet, except the lumbering raid party on the horizon, echoed by the savage cries of the bloodthirsty orcs.

The battle lines were drawn, of what a battle line there could be. I, and my farmer army, strode out to meet the orc rabble. There was a puzzled look upon the orcs, which was quickly replaced by their hideous laughter. The people I swore to defend were terrified. Some fled, others vomited at the very thought of their deaths.

With a ferocious cry, the orcs charged, bloodlust in their sunken eyes. My greatsword at the ready, I calmly whispered a prayer to Torm, and charged. My charge was echoed by the screams of enraged peasents, who found courage in my own.

We slaughtered them all, under Torm's watchful eye.

Do alignments have to be extrovert? I reckon that's the last level that needs to be added to the D&D alignment system, an indication of how dedicated you are to your beliefs.

A True Neutral Druid going out to maintain the balance is very different compared to, say, a commoner who has no interest in higher concepts.

    Reposting this from the other thread;

I'd like to prove that there's still a unique character left int he world. Rogue/Paladin:

Genvieve was a part of an affluent family once, however early in her youth a great power shift happened in the city she lived in, forcing her to become a street urchin and band with others of that kind simply to survive. She kept a kind heart despite it, however, and was always everyone's favorite little sister, or as she grew, big sister. she learned how to fight out of necessity, but far more preferred to defuse the situation or run away and hide somewhere. This changed when a brave Ranger, hoping to rid the world of an evil Fighter who had been tyrannizing the city, lured him into the part of town where 'no-one would notice a few more people gone'. The Fighter, wounded badly from the fight, grabbed Genvieve's best friend Lisa, and threatened to kill her if the Ranger didn't give up. Faced with such a dillema, the Ranger was frozen...but Genvieve was not, and using a dagger that she had barely ever wounded with, found a chink in the wounded warrior's armor, slaying him with a final strike. As she killed him, she felt a glowing light inside of her, and a voice speaking in her head, as armor formed around her body. "You have a brave soul." Said Heironeous, as he granted her the power of the Paladin. "You will do well as an example to the people." She was blinded for a moment as a rush of new skills entered her mind and body, becoming part of her, and when she could see, she had a Greatsword in her hands. Leaving later that day, she has tried to set the best example for Law and Good through the world that she could.

My freind was DMing for the second time ever. I was helping him out the first time, but he seemed to have things covered so i only played the second time.
He fucked up the CR. I don't know how but he thought that the monster he was using were CR1/2, but they were actually CR 2.

But Albert the noble Paladin never flees! Not when he carries the fate of that random village on his shoulders! Well... The paladin drops to 0 in the fight, and one of the monsters tries to run past him toward the wizard, so he kills the little fucker and passes out. The rest of teh party escape the monsters, dragging him behind. They then set up trip wires, dig pits and cover a section of tunnel with oil ready to burn as the monsters come for us.
To some up, we reversed the dungeon, got the monsters to come for us, ad by bottle necking them, destroyed a big force of monster much to strong for us.
    Cus L/G NEVAR RUNS!!!!

... well sometimes, but not in this situation.

How does DnD define good with this 9 alignment system?
He was certainly a person dedicated to the good of the people and used the law because he was dedicated to his own sense of order born from how he was raised. But he was willing to cut lives short to support that order, and made decisions for people, instead of with them.

Ah yes. Something similar once led to our party facing a Dire Ratbadger. It had the CR and hiding skills of a Dire Rat, and the ferocious barbarian-eating tenacity of a Dire Badger. It probably didn't help us that our 20+ spot checks didn't notice the badger hole leading to our horses falling into said opening.

Britain: Hey America, we just got done fighting a long war against France to prevent them from taking you guys over, so how about you help us pay for it with this stamp tax?
America: NO I DON'T WANT TO
Britain: Well, we like our colonies, so ok, we'll be fine with that. But look, we still need the money, so how about this - we sell you some really high quality tea at LOWER prices then normal, just so long as we get a really small tax.
America: STOP PUSHING MY BRITAIN OH MY GOD JUST STOP PUSHING US AROUND. THAT'S IT, WE'RE GOING TO DESTROY ALL YOUR SHIT AND START HANGING BRITISH SYMPATHISERS.
Britain: What the fuck you crazy bastards.

    Then the war starts.

North: Wow, it sure is easy finishing off Borgoyne around here. I bet the whole war will be this easy.
South: Hey North, we've got a bit of a problem. The Brits gave all the scot/irish hicks over here weapons, and now they're rampaging through our lands, murdering and raping everything and everyone they come across.

I read an awesome book called Red Dragon last year, a mystery / thriller set in China. By the end of it, the main character was in constant agony from a gunshot, his only chance at love had left him, his ex-wife who he still loved was dying from AIDS, his best friend was dead, and all of his male relatives had been murdered. He was also due to be sentenced to death by firing squad for treason. And through it all; the torture, the discreting, the murders, he never actually compromised his beliefs. A corrupt party official wanted him to kill a British surgeon to cover his own tracks, but the cop never did. It was amazingly badass.

With D&D the ends do not justify the means. You saved someone life. Good. Then go on to kill plenty of others. That's evil, for them. You did no wrong. If you kill someone who's helpless and you know they're going to kill others, that's evil. If you just manage to subdue them and fight them on fair grounds, that's good.

lawful doesn't work that way, it CAN if that is what your character wants to do, but lawful and lawful good even more, simply means that you have a strong code of honor and that you tend to do things more by the book. chaotic means that there are no real "rules" you can make a plan or you can just go in and smash and slash til the problem is solved.

you can be a paladin that doesn't follow the rules of a city you are in if they are wrong, some of the most "unlawful" characters are paladins that fought against an evil city or evil laws. if you are a paladin and you are in a city that says you have to kill anyone wearing a certain color, or that you have to fight someone to the death, you don't have to follow that law because it has the potential to be very wrong, and little timmy didn't mean to wear red, but his big brother's blood got on him when the corrupt guards smashed his head in an hour ago.

I actually have a REASON for hating paladins. it's also the reason I dislike the alignment system in DnD.
THE WORLD IS NOT BLACK AND WHITE! MORALLY, AND ETHICALLY, IT IS SHIFTING GREY! There is always something worse than and better than anything else, and what is "good" in one set of circumstances, is definitelly not good under another.

I agree with you, the real world doesn't work like that.

But like everything else, it depends on the setting. You don't like it? Scrap the alignment system and remove paladins (or negate the alignment requirements, I already loosen the lawful requirement for Paladins and abolish it entirely for Monks). But if someone else is running a game and the value system is absolute, then I expect your kind to sit down, shut up, and play the game, or get the hell out.

I find that games with shifting, ambiguous morality and games with absolute, black-and-white evil can both be interesting. Do you think Lord of the Rings or Star Wars are crap just because they have little to no moral ambiguity? If so, I happen to think that makes you an elitist asshole.

Sup fa/tg/uys? I just got back from the first session of my friends new campaign. As usual the rest of the party rolled up a rogue, a fighter rogue, and a ninja. They all wanted to roleplay the dark loner type. They are all Chaotic Stupid. I decide to go a different route and rolled a Lawful Good Monk/Paladin, with Vow of Poverty,Vow of Non Violence, and Vow of Peace. I tell all the players and the DM that my character believes that there is good in all sentient creatures and they all deserve a chance at redemption.

First combat I refrain from killing my opponents, but I decided my character wouldn't be a moral fag and lecture the rest of the party when they killed the goblins. I figured If I wasn't lawful stupid and preachy, I could have my altruistic character without disrupting the game. Unfortunately this was not the case.

As soon as the combat is over (6 goblins, 4 dead from the other members, two at my feet who have calmed emotions) I say prayers for the fallen as my character would.I think that the situation is over, but the gnome rogue in my party decides that his character's family was killed by goblins and that he wants to kill the two goblins I have sitting at my feet. I tell him that I am taking the goblins back to town and that I'm going to try and convince the townsfolk to let the goblins work in the fields to repay them for the attacks on the town and that maybe peace could be achieved. He says his character doesn't care and tells me to move. I tell him that I took a sacred vow and that I wouldn't break it by letting him kill my prisoners. So he decides to attack me.

I look at the DM and he just shakes his head and tells us to roll for initiative. I swear I see a slight smile. The gnome wins initiative and tries to shank me with his dagger. He misses due to my godly AC. I respond by dropping him with one blow, all subdual damage. The other two decide that they are going to jump in the fray against me. A few rounds go by and soon I have three unconscious party members and two ingratiated goblins.

So anyway, with their characters all unconscious they start to BAAAAWWWWWW!!! to the DM about ME being Lawful Stupid and calling me a moralfag much to the amusement of me and the DM. So me and the goblins haul off my party back to town where I convince the townsfolk to let the goblins redeem themselves. I also tell them about the treachery of the party. When the other PC's wake up and find out that they are pariahs in this town for wanting to kill a "Holy man of mercy" like myself, I declined the reward, so no loot for hem either. The gnome was pissed and I could tell he was going to try and get revenge, but the other two were so impressed that they agreed to let me go about my peaceful ways.

In one campaign I play a paladin/knight of the iron glacier. He's from the far north, descended from a very zealous group of crusaders who were separated from the rest of the church hundreds of years ago. So he ends up back in the civilization in the holy city, where he finds that (as far as he's concerned) the faith has fallen greatly - nonbelievers are allowed within the city walls, nonhumans are treated as equals, crime is rampant, and everyone worships a facet of the LG deity (it's divided into pieces - the warrior, the healer, the mother, the judge, etc) rather than its entirety like his religious minority does.

So while he's there, he learns of this prophecy: If the knights of the iron glacier ever return to their garrison in the city, it will precipitate the end of the world. With this in mind, the head of the church asks him to write a letter to his order warning them to stay away. He writes the letter, but then adds that evil and corruption fill the city, that even amongst the clergy heresy is rampant, and that frankly he's not convinced this prophecy is even real, so his suggestion is that the Knights send a large contingent over to clean up the place.

Of course, I'm sure the DM would have found some excuse to have the order return to the city even if I had told them to stay away.

Party was made up of a Monk, Paladin, LG Fighter, and a Cleric and were around level 15. It was a pretty awesome party. Near the end of their character careers, outsiders invaded the country through a rift. The party was dispatched, alone, to stop it. They ended up defending against and defeating a small army of LG angels, because those angels saw the world they entered as corrupt and evil.

Both sides thought they were in the right. The angels had the right to purge evil, the humans had the right to defend life. The angels had the welfare of all peoples dealing with their evil in mind, the humans had the welfare of their families and friends on their mind. It was an unfortunate conflict of LG vs LG, neither side able to back down, due to their morals.

There was no dishonor after the battle. There was no losing of powers. But.. there were no celebrations. The victory was bittersweet.

The DM was pretty happy. He finally got to attack people with angels. :P

My view of a Lawful good Paladin's Code of Conduct is thus:

    1. Duty to god; a paladin follows their god's teachings in all things and attempts to be an example to others
    2. Duty to the law; a paladin strives to follow all laws of the area he is in, if they contradict the teachings of his god he will try to change them in an orderly manner.
    3. Duty to others; heal the sick, defend the defenseless, give of yourself, and be always willing to give your life for those you protect
    4. Duty to self; physical, mental, and moral fitness. fulfillment of any personal oaths.

Paladin's don't often make it to high levels. They are designed not too.

2nd edition had it right with only allowing humans and making the requirements insane.

They make good tools for the situation at hand, but the ones who live to a ripe old age are alive too long to not question their black and white ways. That is why paladin's "fall" or all that nonsense. Paladins' in my campaigns that are PC's get to about 5th level tops for the mount. I make it nearly impossible to survive and keep their powers past that. They usually get these levels during a quest that is almost directly from their god's. After that they can retain their powers and usually level as fighters. That way they can war and crusade against their own corrupt systems.

and thus, by saying you try to penalize a player for wanting to stay as a paladin you prove you suck as dming. not wanting a player to be a high lv paladin because you think by 6th level they should be questioning their morals and find themselves wanting isn't realistic or proper, its just poor dming and poor planing.

a paladin, with a good dm who doesn't screw with a character just because they are a certain job, should be able to make it to the top with out ever falling or at least he could have navigated that situation without falling, but he misjudged or mis-planned.

    I don't penalize them.

Paladin is supposed to be the hardest class in the game.

"The forces of good are few and powerful, and the forces of evil are numerous and craven."

The quote is something like that and I think it makes sense.

Paladin should have a lot going against them and be called into a lot of self sacrifice.

I also run my campaigns that Paladin's are only the agents of one L/G god. The levels are only gained when undertaking quests to further his agenda.

So yeah. I make it hard to play a Paladin to 20 because, I think the nature of the class requires it to take the risks, other, less trying classes do.

How that makes me a sucky DM is beyond me. Enjoy your sandbox campaign bullshit, I am sure it is great.

"I am sorry to ask this of you, Lady Tecthelion, but if there were any other...." The apologetic abbess bowed her head, runnign her prayer beads through her figners with one hand, the other tugging nervously at her robes.

"No, Abbess Dupre. It is the nature of my duty. Send in my page. I will need help arming myself."

Kneeling before the altar on some cushions, Sir Lady Eliana Tecthelian remained as she was, head bowed, hands clasped loosely before her. The candles on the altar glowed warmly, releasing the scent of beeswax into the air. Her loose robes were plain soft cotton, and she allowed herself a moment more to luxuriate in the feel of it.

It's sucky because it limits the characters for no good reason. Everything you say about a paladin could just as easily be said about a lawful good cleric or even a religious fighter; you're taking a class which should be fun to play and which a player should have the option of running through to 20 if that's what they want to do, and declaring that it's impossible with no support from the rules and a half-assed explanation based on your feeling that "it should be hard to play a paladin". Well, it should also be hard to play a wizard, are you going to make them study for a year before they're allowed to go up a level? No one likes to have limitations beyond the scope of the standard rules like that arbitrarily forced on them.

Danielle came in quietly, but the Lady Knight had already risen, and was shedding the soft, thick robes. Swallowing nervously, the woman-child quickly gathered the discarded clothing and laid it on the bed. As Eliana folded and tied a fresh loincloth on, Danielle quickly opened the armoire, and paused, lookign at the sight of the heavy chainmail and the thick padding and straps for the greaves and bracers. The spell-strengthened metal gleamed as though it had not been in sotrage for nearly two years, and the padding smeeled of camphor and flax-seed oil.

    "Do not dally, Danielle."

The mild reprimand galvanized the young acolyte and she flushed, quickly gathering the heavy wool padding and leather belts. She slowed down once she relaized the older woman was not actually angry or irritated, and she began helping her mentor dress for battle.

"Are you afraid, my lady?' she asked softly, glancing up at the powerfully built woman curiously.

"A little. It is....an unusual situation. And while I have kept up my training, after such an injury, I will not be able to perform some of the manuvers I used to do with ease." The injuries she had sustained in her last battle were bad enough that she had been granted permission to retire to a nunnery, but as with all servants of the Lawgiver, she would not hesitate to respond when called upon. "Nevertheless, I will do what can be done, and must be done. No one else can do so, and I can certainly do no less."

the adventures that a player takes place are SUPPOSED to be the trials and acts of faith a paladin goes through for their god. every time they smite a foe, save an innocent, or heal a beggar or injured party member, they are doing so in the name of their god or goddess.

the way you are playing it, a wizard should have to take a mini-quest find spells in a library when they level up or maybe play a mini-game every morning to see if they actually gain their spells or screw them up and end up having to wait another day, a cleric has to actually meditate and fast or whatever for a fortnight to gain their diety's blessing to level up.

a paladin is no different from any other class, just they have moral contentment. a paladin isn't constantly questioning his morals, that is the good thing about paladins, they almost never question their faith or their morals because if they did something wrong they would know right away because they would loose their deity's blessings. paladins do the right thing according to their deity and their own moral compass, even if it goes with the majority of the town/city they are in.

Belting the heavy padding about her waist, Eliana grimaced. The padding, despite the care she took of it, was stiff and unweildly. Well, no matter - as soon as she put on her armour she would be drenched in sweat, and that would loosen up the tight cloth quickly. She smiled and shook her head, prompting a curious asking of her name from her page.

"Hmn? Oh, it is nothing, Danielle. It has only been a while. POractice suits are not the same as the ironmonger's work, as you'll learn soon enough for yourself." Going to one knee, she helped Danielle lift the heavy hauberk of fine chain mesh over her head and let the girl smooth and straighten it. She smiled as she was given her vambraces and thegirl worked to secure her greaves.

The rest of the fitting was conducted in silence, and As Eliana was alone in her thoughts, she considered how best to tackle the problem of finding the jewel she'd been tasked to fetch. She changed position only to allow Danielle to continue her work, and she smiled, appreciating the girl's rare silence.

When all was said and done, her gorget clamped tight about her neck and her bracers and vambraces set, she allowed Danielle to slip the surcoat on. The red tabard of silk was new, the single golden arrow of Law pointing upwards, indicating the path of the just, the resoolute, and the well intentioned. This one was enchanted, as her other had not been. she would not suffer another maiming by fire as she had previously. She couldn't use a shield now - her left arm was too badly wounded from the battle, though not immobilized - or, thank Donblas, amputated.

She let the girl buckle her swordbelt on, and then ran her hand alogn the girl's smooth shoulder, traced her neck, and lifted her chin. She gave the girl a soft kiss, and then touched her forehead to Danielle's. "You will grow up to be a powerful force for good, my darling girl, and I shall pray you have fewer trials to face than I have faced."

The girl's cheeks were hot, and she touched the gleaming cloth-of-gold arrow. "Thank you, my lady. I will strive to be worthy of your praise."

Only then did Eliana take her sword from the armoire, and buckle it to her swordbelt. The weapon throbbed alogn her hip and she laid a reassuring hand along the sheath, calming the ancient blade. "Go and make sure my steed is saddled, would you Danielle?" Elaina smiled at the girl's exuberant, and emotion filled reply. Once she was gone, however, the paladin let her shoulders sag under the weight of the burdens both phsycial and spiritual.

"I thank you for allowing me to be yet useful, Donblas my lord, but I pray that you see fit to allow me my rest once it is done. I am no longer as strong as once I was, and I would not wish fail you or your children simply because I am infirm. Support me in my frailty, my lord, and grant me success in this last endeavor."

Though she felt better after the brief prayer, Eliana was unsure this was a wise choice. There were other ways this deed could be accomplished, but apparently there were few who were willign to do so. The Moaning Diamond was accursed, and that was bad enough, but to have to face one of the sthonic creatures of ancient times, one of the dreaded medusae, that was daunting as well. There were spells and slaves that could help, but death was not the goal. Killing a medusa was one thing. But speaking with it amicably? She could understan dwhy she had been chosen....but being the first resort was always hard.

Her blade thummed at her side, excited to be at her side once more. She stroked the sheath gently, and the strange weapon stilled. Many people claimed personalities and attitudes for their weapons, but this one had both. It had been forged for her order, and stolen long ago. It had been instremental in her surviving the battle with the wyrm who had stolen it in the first place. Her companions had long since gone on to other and hopefully better things.

She made her way out to the stables slowly, with sure, calm paces. Her helment she kept under her left arm, not quite ready to cope with the inconvenience it represented. She heard the soft scuffing of her stallion, and his nickering as Danielle tightened the straps of his saddle proeprly. "It has been a logn time, old friend. I trust you are no less sturdy than I."

~No, my lady, I remain ready to do thy bidding, as ever.~ The Heavy roan was a gift from her god, and he had been with her through all. Even now, he waited on her, and she felt reassured.

Danielly gave her the great beast's reins and she laid her hand on the girl's shoulde rone last time. "Stay well, Danielle. I will return home soon." She did not promise, and Danielle whispered a soft agreement, but her heart was not in it; Lady Eliana did not really blame her. Many of the nuns and clerics had expressed similar misgivings, though none spoke of them aloud.

Mounting carefully, she turned Belligerence towards the gate and he took off at a stately - and distinctly uncomfortable - canter. She let himn have his head; he would know the way better than she, in this peculiar situation. She began to sing a hym as she rode towards the gates, and as she passed others of the order took up the song, until nearly the entire nunery was singing in unison as Sir Lady Eliana Tecthelion rode out on one more quest.

A few hours later Belligerence picked his way along the path that led up the mountainside. It was not much of a path, but it was clearly marked by simple stelae fallen over, a few cobbles here and there, and the occasional shrine to one or another god. The path was startign to recover from the long use, hardy crabgrass finding root in the hard-packed earth.

~My lady, I am curious. It is well within your right to refuse this quest. You have done as much, or more, than any paladin of Donblas' Choosing. Surely they could grant you an amnesty given your injuries?~ The powerful horse had slowed to a walk, and picked his way along the path with as much care as she would have on foot.

"I suppose that is true. I would not have been pleased with myself; and there is the fact that I am uniquely suited for these dealings. A medusa may hesitate before trying to petrify a woman, given our sisterhood. Or so it is to be hoped. more likely we will end up discusisng such matters at the end of my blade, if she does not manage to put a shaft through my head." She reached back, and ran her hand along the crest of her helm. The eyeslit was narrow, but long, rather than two eyeholes. It was angled as well, to rpevent easy strikes through it.

"~I understand my lady. If this is your course, I will accompany you upon it as best I may.~

She laughed softly. "You needn't fear I'll be taking you into the caves. They're like as not to be uncomfortable for me, much less a brute your size." She patted his withers and he nickered. "We're almost there; the sun is getting low."

~I see the cave, my lady. It is not far at all. Not far enough, mayhap.~ He snorted, and began a quick trot, jarring Eliana unmercifully, though she did not complain.

As the odd pair arrived at the entrance to the cave, Eliana took her helm and put it on, glad she'd kept her hair short the years she'd remained in the nunnery. The dulling of her senses was not as bad as some; the helm was largely to protect the front and back of her head, and while her ears and the sides of her neck were somewhat exposed, her gorget protected her neck most thoroughly.

Belligerence slowly went to the ground, and she dismounted carefully. The scent of pitch and oily smoke wafted from the cave entrance. That solved at least one problem - though it made sense for such as medusae to have their homes well lit. "Wish me well, Belligerence, old friend." She padtted him and took an apple out of one of her belt pouches, and he took it from ehr gratefully.

~You do not need my well-0wishings, but you may have them nonetheless, beloved.~ He watched her make her way carefully to the cave entrance and disappear into the orange-tinted darkness within.

Making her way carefully through the warm, smelly dimness of the cave, Eliana listened attentively for the sounds that heralded the approach of death. The sound of scales on scales, hissing, or the sound of claws on stone. Or, the most disheartening, the creak of a bow being drawn. She had always considered it quite strange that the sisterhood of the medusae adhered to the weapons of the virgin goddess, though they once worshipped other goddesses. Perhaps it was part of their torment that they could no longer embrace men.

The cool damp of the cave, interspaced with small globes of momentary warmth were the torches or lamps burned, gave way to a more humid warmth and she slowed her pace. The falling of water came from deeper within the chamber, and she could hear the soft breezes that moved through the room as well. Much more importantly, she heard the soft sound of gut and wood stetching and bending.

Laying her hand on the sheath of her blade, she felt it's thibbing pulse at her side. It was strangely quiescent, despite the presence of the medusa; she took it as a good sign.

"I come bearing no ill will, with not intent to harm or suffer harm. I come in hope of peacable talk, for what I seek does not seem to lie in this place." The Moaning Diamond was so named for a good reason.

"What peace does a servant of the Lawgiver bring but the silence of death and the peace of the grave?" asked a surpsingly sweet voice from across the chamber. "I see you clearly there; so step forth, weapon undrawn if you would have any hope of peacable talk." The paladin obediently edged forward, carefully negotiating the smooth cave floor with its strange swells and dips. It would be a nightmare to fight some things on this ground.

"I am Sir Lady Eliana Tecthelion, Blessed of the Lawgiver, Champion Valourus of the Nuns of Heathmark. I mean you no ill - I seek the Moaning Diamond, and hear it not. If you will come forth and speak to me, I merely ask that you tell truly that you know or know not where it maylie, and I will leave you in peace." She carefully unbuckled her belt and slowly laid it upon the ground at her feet, hilt to the left and thus positoned even more awkwardly for drawing forth. "I would cast a single spell of truthsaying and then I may claim that you have said no false words to me, and will leave you in peace ever after."

The creature's voice wafted from closer, and Eliana held her ground, head high, trusting in her god that the medusa would not seek to petrify her. "I am not unversed in spellcraft. You wear Donblas' trappings and carry his weapon, but that does not mean you are his alone. Cast your spell, and then I shall come closer. But you must avert your gaze of your own accord, for I care not that one less slayer of monsters may stand frozen for all time in my home."

Eliana found it interesting that the creature knew that the sword was a relic of Law; she was clearly intelligent, and to be learned as well was an unusual thing for any of the less than human races to lay claim to. "As you wish, then, miss." It could do not harm to use such an honorific - she certainly sounded young, perhaps only a little older than Danielle or Hollymay.

The paladin dispensed with the materials and the gestures, and simply hld her hands up in supplication. Her sword was already positioned properly for a focus, and of course she had no need of a symbol, as she wore one.

Though words be spoken coerced or nay
    Let no lie nor untruth pass this way;
By Laws great gift and His will faced
Untruth shall burn and lie be disgraced.

A shimmer of golden light pulsed from the sword and expanded alogn it's length, and further, until it spread and broke like a gentle wave of golden light across the cavern. A series of soft, meaningless hisses erupted from nearby, and the paladin tensed; the medusa had moved silently to one side, and Eliana hadn't caught it. It was a sobering thing to know.

"Pretty voice," murmured the medusa idly, almsot to herself. Eliana simply waited, and was rewarded by the dulcet tones emerging from no more than a few paces in front of her, well within the Zone of Truth's purvey. "Very well, Lawgiuver's Champion. Ask of me what you wish, and I shall answer. I have an arrow pointed at your heart, though the bow not drawn; I am faster than you. You are older than many of your kind."

"Score and one half score and three years; not so old. I have been at war, and the body ages when ill used. But I waste your time, miss." She considered and then simply asked outright. "Do you know the whereabouts of the jewel known as the Moanign Diamond, young miss?"

There was a distinctive sort of relief in the creature's voice. "No, I know not of certainty; but I know that it is said to lie in the caverns near the highest reaches of this very mountain." She moved a little closer. "Why do you seek this thing?"

"I am asked to seek it by those whom serve the faith; I am uncertain to what use they wish to put it, so I seek to learn of its whereabouts and secure it. If they seek its use in peace and without ill will, then I see no reason it cannot be placed in the hands of others. But as it was requested of me to find it, i could not refuse outright. And the motives of men and women change in time." She considered. "Do you know of what guards and wards may be placed upon it?"

I can say with truth that it will slay any who move past the shrine of the Thundergods; it has no love of Law's might, and will slay you but slowly." There was anote of smugness in the dulcet voice, but eliana forgave her; it was understandable for the medusa to hold emnity towards those who served the Lawgiver, given a number of acolytes and adepts must have visited misery upon her in the past.

"I understand, and appreciate your warning, though you need not have given it." Eliana considered and then shook her head. "I have no more that I can ask of you and claim that it lies in the domain of my work; I shall leave you as I promised, in peace."

    "Wait."

Eliana paused in the act of pickign up her weapon, and looked towards the medusa.

"What is it you wished to ask that did not lie in your quest's purvey, Sir Lady Eliana?" The soft, voice was a little nearer, though still a good two long paces off. "You have kept close to your end of our bargain; what question burns that you wish to speak of it?"

The medusa's writhing hair hissed softly, though not with any sort of rancor. "I...see. I learned from an aged priestess who believed she could convert me to the ways of Law. She passed away many years ago, of a heart frail. She gave me books, and taught me songs and leys. Her ways were stange, and she could not convince me to accept the Lawgiver's blessings, but I hold no ill will to her memory."

"Sister Ketsu." Eliana smiled, rememberign the gentle nun with the iron hard hands who worked twice as hard as any nun, and expected no less of any of the children she taught. "She too was my teacher. I had heard tale she went up to these mountains to die, but her fate is yet unknown, save now to me. I thank you for your gift." Eliana reached into her pouch, though she prompted another drawing of the bow. She slowly knelt and laid the half-dozen small rubies and sapphires she'd brought and laid them on the ground before she picked up her sword. She heard the bow slowly being untensioned as she belted her sword on.

"Why do you give me these? I have little use for such things...." Yet the voice disagreed with the words. There was a fiant longing in that voice, and eliana smiled.

"All women should have some bright things to enjoy for their own pleasure. and you have solved for me a mystery, as well as given me warning of what is to come. It is little enough reward, and I have little use for these myself, now." She still donated one to the Abbey every two fortnights, supporting it well.

"New arrivals?" asked the medusa angrily. "Led them here and meanign for them to finish what you could not, perhaps." The bow went taut again, but no steel bit into the paladin's back.

Speaking softly, Eliana swore, "By my honour, I swear I brought none but my steed. If you hide, they need not know you are here." Resting her hand on the hilt of her blade she called out, "Hullo to the journeymen. A paladin of the Lawegiver speaks up; what brings you to this place of silence?"

The footsteps and sounds halted, then resumed more slowly.

"Hullo to you, Lady Knight! We seek the creature said to live in this place. A bounty lies on her head, and the king's gold is good." There were soft laughs at that, and another vcoice muttered. Four people, at the least.

Eliana stepped back two careful paces, and she waited for them to come into the chamber. Two men in heavy armour, and weapons drawn; a smaller one, gnomish if she knew that accent, spoke up. "Well, I know of ye. Sir Lady Eliana the wyrmslayer. I hope ye have nae taken from us th' pleasure of taking a bounty."

A wicked little snicker erupted near the gonme, and Eliana frown under her helm. "No, I've done no such thing. Unfortunately, you have come too late - the medusa who lives here is of no concern to any now. Return some other day, and there might be a bounty to be sought. This day is a day of peace, and I'll thank you all to allow my word of honour to stand." There were dark mutters from the snickerer and what must have been one of the warriors. The spokesman laughed.

"Ah, I wish we could, but we've spent hard earned gold to salves and potions. I see no reason to let that go to waste." He ran the thumb of his gauntlet alogn his blade, the leather making a soft rushing noise. "so, if you'd stand aside, well take care of this little problem for you."

Eliana dipped her hand in her pouch, and once again silence and wariness filled the chamber. It was a louder silence, since there were more weapons and threats now.

Taking out a small handful of small sapphires and rubies - the wyrm's hoard had been plentiful with the tiny gems - she tossed them at the feet of the adventurers. Two of them scuffled about, collecting the stones. "That should pay amply for your time and trouble. Go now, and be at peace for this day. I've no desire for bloodshed to mar this day, even if it is for a cause you consider worthy." It was the best she could do; she couldn't possibly remain to protect the medusa night and day. But she'd given her word, and these folk were not peacable. she hoped they were bribable.

"Well....this is a handsome number of good gems. I think we could consider waiting a day or so." Eliana's jaw clenched and the sword burned in her hand, even through the leather glove.

"Why do you not come with me to the nunnery for the evening? We set a fine table, and the wine is aged well. Tommorow, perhaps, you can return with magics and blessings to help you." Of course, the added warning would give the medusa time to prepare, or even to leave if she felt it neccessary. Unfortunately, Eliana feared the worst of this group.

The warriors laughed and the gnome chuckled. The snickering one did not make any noise, however, and Eliana tensed, listenign carefully.

"Though your hospitality is nice, and the idea of a few of the younger students at the nunnery is definitely appealing, I think we'll pass on your generousity and-" he didn't finish his sentence and raw, agonizing fire lept up Eliana's back from the knife in her side. She drew her sword and there were sharp cries of pain as the blaze of light that erupted from it blinded eyes unready for it. The weapon bit into soft leather and then flesh, though not quite deep enough for bone. She kicked the backstabber aside and lashed foreward, catching one of the others off guard and shearing through his leg-armour.

They moved like a well trained unit, and she was having a hard time trying to track them; the footpad was the greatest danger since she was well aware her blow had been less than fatal. She heard the creack of leather and scrape of metal and blocked, catchign a blade along her sword. She whipped her sword free and was met by the same weapon. He was traine din a similar style, but he was not used to someone who had fought in close quarters - his swings were wide and his overhand movement too long. she managed to stab him, a mortal wound from the feel of it. She felt, more than heard the gnome move in close, and she slapped him with the side of her blade - inadvertently, as she had not expected him to be that close. Someone began an incatation, and she swore silently.

A swift hiss passed by her head and the chant became a gurgling gasp.

She was able to dispatch that warrior fairly quickly, but the footpad was back, and he stabbed her - this time in the kidney, eliciting a scream. He was not able to draw his blade out of her back fast enough and she reverse-thrust into his belly, and then used her hip to turn him with the blade. A wet spatter hit the rocky floor of the cave, and he was slung from her sword, freeing it from his corpse.

She managed to get her vambrace up in time to take a heavy blow to her arm, numbing it, but the reinforced bracer absorbed the blow entirely. Eliana had been given them by a dwarven defender who said they were not quite as good as a shield but better than trusting to pure luck; she was glad she'd listened to his advice at that moment.

The gnome gave a shriek and there was a strange, crumbling, crackling noise and she shuddered a little. The last warrior turned and ran, but the dulcet tones of the medusa followed him. There was a sharp crack, the scent of ozone, and the sensation of her hair standing on end, and a despairing shriek that ended in the stench of scorched flesh and stone. Eliana collapsed to her knees, reaching behind her back to press her knuckles agaisnt the wound in her lower back.

Gentle hands moved to hold her up and she brought up her blazing weapon. "No, put that down. It is only I." Eliana lowered the weapon as the medusa helped her to the floor, and she pulled her helmet off, stiflingly hot despite the momentary nature of the fight.

"Oh. I....see." The medusa's soft voice was much nicer without the helm to interfere with her hearing. The paladin faced the ceiling, her hand behind her back as she concetrated the force of her will upon the wound, willing it to close and cease paining her.

Though Eliana could not see her, the medusa looked at the bent stripe of scar tissue and the empty sockets of the paladin's eyes. It was almsot a perfect match to her visor. "The wyrm?" she asked, gently, scalled fingers slowly tracing the line of dense tissue.

"Yes. He spat flames, but he transformed his fire, and it stuck, like molten sugar or naptha and pitch. I have not had sight since then. The spells to heal such wounds are potent, and I have yet to be granted such a boon by the Cardinal, though in time it may be given." She did not entirely keep her unhappiness from her voice as she rested. The medusa was allowing her to rest her head along the scaled thighs of the kneeling creature, and she was grateful for the comfort. The exploring fignertips avoided her eye sockets, though she had no feeling in them or along any of the scars the dragon had left her. "I suspect that my raising a daughter out of wedlock is much of the reason, but as I have no vow of chastity, it was a gift I did not refuse. My vow of celibacy prevented me from marrying, so I raise her as best I can now. She is a sweet girl."

"What is her name?" asked the medusa, curiously. Her figners left the wounded paladin's face and the woman relaxed, sliding her hand feew of her back and cradling the warmly pulsing sword.

"Danielle. I've tried to be a good mother to her; she seems happy, but what can one know about a daughter...."

The medusa laughed a litttle. "How very strange. You fought for me; did they sendyou because you are blind? To speak with me?"

Eliana had to think about that. "I suspect that was part of it. I suspect the other part is....I am embarassing to the priests and knights. I am devout and have had sucesses enviable, and they seem to find me....irtritating." She shook her head. "But it is what I am; to not go would have been not only impolitic, but mad eme less thew woman I wish to be. I would rather face you, seek in the dark, than sit in the dark and not be warmed by my faith and my god's affections." The medusa was silent a long moment. When she did speak, it was soft.

"When you have healed, I will go with you. Perhaps we can see that your daughter is not alone. To loose a mother is hard; and I...while your god is not of my liking, I cannot say the same of you. I doubted you, but you are more like your Sister Ketsu than I had first thought."

"I am flattered miss. I cannot say that I would refuse the hospitality. I have done what I can, but I am still injured. I should see to what other wounds I may have; I cannot feel much of my left arm or side." The wyrms venmous fire had left her with deep scars, and while they did not mar her figure too terribly, the healing of the wounds had not returned all of her sensation. "Might I ask your name?"

"Stheno. My name is Stheno." The medusa caressed the face of the paladin, lookign down at a mther, not unlike her own, who sought to return home to her child. And she was beautiful, in a strange way - perhaps not in the way of beautiful women, but in the way of the blessed.

Eliana relaxed, wondering at her strange fortunes. Donblas tested; she hoped he found her worthy enough to let her see her daughter again. In the mean time....

    Well fuck.

Now I need to re-watch Dexter.

    That's tomorrow fucked.

    I hope you're happy.

BTW - In the end, I think Good/Evil are just points of view, not things that are solid. Anything can be seen as both good or evil if you look at it from the right angle.

Actually I find Ayn Rand a bit of a subjectivist prick. Same as Dawkins - they both fall into a similar category of not being able to objectively assess a given situation without pandering to emotional responses and begin ranting.

Now I ask you, are you trolling?
    >Some things are absolutely wrong and other aren't.

How and where do you draw the line, my friend? Does an Arbitrary creator-God impose the rules? Is it what society accepts, and, if so, whose society?

Saying things are evil ‘because they are’, implies a quality of evil to an item, action or person. This quality is only defined by your opinion. You wouldn't say the same thing about things being tasty just because they're tasty, would you? You’d surely appreciate that some people just don’t like garlic in their food.

Now, this doesn't mean in an amoral being who enjoys torture and rape (that would be like saying 'Anyone who isn't an American patriot is a terrorist!'), rather I hold that my objection against such actions is based on reason and understanding.

Sadism is not the enjoyment of inflicting pain on others. It's merely the enjoyment of seeing others in pain. Some sadists may enjoy seeing a woman hurt but that doesn't mean they have no moral compass and couldn't go to her aid. There are many lawful good sadists in real life I can assure you.
