54 KB Playtest Report- Meikyu Kingdom Usually Random !FNrqD.IX2I!!YUH9KpxE1PY 08/25/08(Mon)20:36 No.2427551
One thing I got to do at Gencon was attend a game for Meikyu Kingdom. The game itself is a cross between a dungeon crawl and sim city, as a world changing curse turned the world into one huge dungeon or maze. Player groups are court members of a small kingdom that try reclaiming the dungeon rooms to expand their kingdom.
Character creation consists of choosing one of six classes(King, Knight, Ninja, Vizier, Oracle and Servant) and a job, which there were a numerous amount from which to choose from. (I.E. adventurer, medic, witch, solider, priest)
Players then added in both selections' stats on their sheets, collected their job and class ability cards, rolled up 4 words to put in their like/dislike categories (we had a knight girl who liked to knit, for example), decide what the other PCs meant to the player, and one was good to go for the adventure.

Gameplay consisted of an introduction for the adventure, a kingdom phase (where one got new items, built facilities, recruited minions for the adventure and dealt with day-to-day kingdom business) the dungeon crawl, where we selected our order placement on a chart containing 6 areas of the battlefield.

After we were finished, we promptly went into the dungeon to save the dear sweet Tangent, sister of Sign and Cosign, who went missing while picking flowers on the day before the king's coronation. Combat, and everything else, was handled through the use of 2d6. There were items and a point pool, called voice of the people, that could be used to add to this number, and a personal power pool called "Drive" that one could gain by rolling a 6 on a skill check, and removing the 6 from your final total to gain a point that can be used later.

The monsters ranged from giant japanese ogres, red caps, giant sand worms, the goblin-like scarfwearing ogrekin, The Mayonnaise King (a sentient jar of mayo) and the dreaded vorpal bunny (who was a girl in a bunny suit wielding a chainsaw).

As you can tell, the game has a nice comedy side to it, as we had to rescue Tangent from a giant frying pan in the last room, set by the giant oni. Once we were finished, we could take control of the dungeon and build new facilities for later adventures.

Kings worked on the level of warlords, they could dish out a good amount of damage, but their strength was sacrificing health to boost up Voice of the People point draws and also getting to be the king.

Oracles are the magic using class, making use of minions to boost their spells which saved our bacon a few times.

Viziers are armed with rifles and could help boost chances of going first. He was our controller of a sort, and could give orders like a king for counterbalance purposes.

The Knight was exactly as advertised. Hack n Slash.

The Ninja was the thief/scout/spy. Disarming traps as well as getting monster listings for upcoming rooms was his role.

Finally, the Servants are jack-of-all-trades. They can cast magic, fight, scout, haul around minions and generally take different roles when required.

Gameplay took about 2 hours to finish the dungeon and I assume it would go smoother than that if there wasn't a pesky language barrier between us and the GMs (the actual gaming company was there) and deciphering the engrishy rule sheet. They did do a good job, all things considered, and I liked the entire "every item/skill/monster is a card" gimmick (seen above.

I really dug the hell out of the game. It's quick enough to get new players into it, but there's plenty of strategy to come back if one wants to do new adventures and build up their empire.

You can e-mail them above and push for them to release an English edition. It's not like they don't know any natural speaking english from japanese translators and editors already. ;)

Were you playing the RPG or the card game?

The RPG. There is a card game, Meikyu Conquest, but the RPG does make use of cards for information. You could just photocopy or scan them out of the book, or buy a full color deck if you wanted.

I haven't played the card game though which did have english rules but they were sold out at the show.

Ewen traded cards with the developers, and I accepted their request to edit and fix up the quick start rule sheet at the show, so both of us hope that something happens because of it.

This sounds really fun. I have a casual once monthly group that often ends up playing light games like Kill Doctor Lucky, Zombies!, D&D one shots or video games and this might be great for them.

Is this game friendly for occasional play? It's a group with 7 people, of whom 4 to 5 are at any given game.

Yeah, we were able to pick up the rules as we went along in the game. Each adventure seems to add to the kingdom as play progresses with new facilities adding to the rules or what you can do with your turn.

I am deeply intrigued by this game and would like to try it out once you and Ewen get a working English version of it. Dungeon crawls are kind of my thing, and tactical combat (even fairly light ones, as long as they're fairly balanced and at least try to have a tactical focus) is definitely my thing. A non-serious, quirky mood is also undoubtedly my thing.

Also, my apologies for the money order being late; trying to find a way to send an international money order from the Philippines is much harder than I thought.

Nothing has been planned at all. I'd love to work on it and they know what I can do for em. I know Ewen also really wants to see this released, but it's frankly up to Adventure Planning Service if they want to release an english edition or not.

Unlike sunset games, the producers of Maid, APS has been at the past two Gencons, and this year they did two games of MK and had things for sale at the show (the tri-lingual card game, Meikyu Gunfighters and a couple japanese RPGs) at a real booth.

I placed an e-mail link on my fourth post, so give em a holler and politely tell them you'd like to see an english release if you really want that.

There was some level of tactics, you had to work out ways to break through ranks of monsters, like using minions/followers to keep the enemy busy while you move to the next rank to bash their mage or boss.

Firearms were dangerous to use in close quarters and a little unwieldy, a die roll determined who got shot so you didn't want to be in the same rank where people were shooting at.

I did like the use of turns, as the more time you took in the dungeon, you were affected by hunger or becoming fat, along with more monsters would be apt to stumble upon the party and the kingdom is still running even when you guys are away fighting beasties and making new rooms, so you can't take too much time from your goal. On the other hand, if you just rush in without getting a monster count or trap listing, you run the risk of getting ambushed. (One reason why the ninja best do his job.)

Outside of the idea of dungeon crawling, not really. I don't have any pictures of the awesome visual representation comics for MK (or anything else regarding the game for that matter) which show some pretty funny fumble results and the rampage of the Mayonnaise King.

Friend of mine picked up the Maid RPG book for me at the con.

We've played about 3 games so far. Lots of fun, but my one friend doesn't seem to like it, it makes him uncomfortable.

You don't need any kind of plot idea to play, and you really don't need a GM. There are rules in the book so you just pass around GM responsibility so everyone can play.

Last game we played my friend and I were newly hired maids for a young male master, he and I switched bodies for a bit at the very begining. Cause he was a kid he ran off to explore his new female body, and I had to fight with myself to not upset him, or he'd fire me. So I convinced the butler I was the master, and almost tried to seduce the master. We were then teleported to a WoW like world, butler was eaten by a dragon, I found a robot costume, was ordered to kill the other maid so I filled her body (via the vagina) with peanut butter and fed her to gnomes, found a seceret underground base housing a cloning project, and then seduced the young master while dressed as a robot while a vampire gave a moving speach about his master plan that was ruined by the maids.

Really, Maid RPG is just a book filled with random tables of events and items and other things. When you get bored, or want some extra chaos, you just roll some dice and spend some points. It's possible to run a serious game with the system, and I'd like to, but my friends seem to think that the system is only good for random, twisted game play with incoherent plots that don't really matter in the end, anyway.

The guys at Bouken definitely want to, and I even talked to them a bit about helping with the translation when I came across their booth last year, and again this year. I would have considered starting on a fan translation if not for the possibility of an official version. Plus, I have a stack of other Japanese RPGs, and I'm having a friend pick up more in Japan in October.
