Juvenile Corrections Anon, can you tell us more about this? It sounds like a fascinating development.

Have you detected any trend as far as character alignments go among the players you've talked to?

It's actually not all that unusual. I've heard lots of stories of D&D actually being used as a form of group therapy.

4th edition, I imagine, would be even better for it, just because the way the roles are set up, you're a lot more likely to have to work together, but, honestly, D&D as group therapy goes back all the way to 2nd edition.

Now, how it can teach Bob the Murder Rapist to interact properly with others, and still allow Marvin the Neckbeard to be a socially inept powergamer, I'm not entirely sure.

    >>Juvenile Corrections Anon, can you tell us more about this? It sounds like a fascinating development.

    Sure.

I first learned about it when I saw some guys reading a PHB and making characters. I asked them what kind of characters they were making, which prompted them to ask, "You play D&D?" and it kind of went on from there.

Trends-wise, it's more popular amongst the white kids, altough a couple of latino and black kids play too. It's more common amongst the sex offenders, but that's probably because the only 2 kids I know who DM are on the sex offender rehabilitation program.

The first one prefers your standard dungeon crawl. He's run one evil campaign I know of, although it was short, and it was the one where they were trying to save Orcus from killing the Raven Queen and becoming the new God of Death. One of the PCs was aiming for that title. I'm not sure about the current campaign, but I know that one player was asking me what I hought about the idea of his Dragonborn Warlord being the descendant of a Platinum Dragon and wielding a magical longspear made from his tooth.

The other DM is more of a storyteller. he's told me that everyone says he's a good DM, but that he ca get carried away with descriptions. He's an aspiring fantasy writer and when he gets out, wants to do fantasy novels that also double as uplifting and inspiring books for teenagers so they don't make the same mistakes he did. Pretty cool kid... as far as nerds go.

Their current campaign involved some kind of meeting between Satyrs and Eladrin, and some kind of arranged marriage to keep the peace. The PCs were invited because one of them is an Eladrin noble, but the princess was murdered and they were framed for the crime. I forgot what characters they were all playing, but they're just level 2.

Really, most of them are just kind of geeky. They're not the kids that get into a lot of trouble, so they're likely to get out and have their records clean in a couple of years

The guys who have given up are the ones who are constantly getting into fights, stealing from their peers, disrespecting staff, and getting into in gang culture. They're preparing themselves for their inevitable move to the adult facility.

Some of them are the kind of "normal" kid you know who plays a game like D&D or WoW, but aren't as into the whole fantasy and sci fi thing as others.

I've never seen anyone getting picked on for playing D&D though. The other kids don't harass them when they play, and during disagreements, nobody pulls D&D as a negative. It's just seen as a way to pass the time, and they have a lot of free time.

    >>Now, how it can teach Bob the Murder Rapist to interact properly with others

It may sound surprising, but the usually, the worse the kid's offense, the more polite and sociable he is. The guys in for murder and rape are usually the most well behaved. Rapist and sex offenders are VERY good at manipulating people and know how to say things that make you trust them easily. It's something you always have to work out when dealing with them.

The murderers are rarely Hannibal Lecter types. They're usually a kid who was abused and killed the person who was abusing him, or had a gun and was in a situation where they weren't trying to kill someone, but did. They usually want very hard to forget that they killed someone, and often try to downplay it.

The kids who have the most problem dealing with others are in for stuff like assault (fighting basically) and armed robbery. They have little impulse control and relatively less empathy, so they're quicker to just take whatever they want or punch whoever pisses them off.

We don't get the kids with the REAL mental problems. They go to a specialized facility.

I asked about alignment because I was wondering if, you know, particularly the murderer/rapist types would play good because they wanted to be heroes for a change, or more sort of unaligned-but-watches-out-for-his-buddies.

Of course evil and chaotic neutral backstabber are also possibilities, but I kind of assumed they'd want to avoid looking like they were eager to commit more crimes in front of the staff.

This is what the majority of them play. No chaotic or lawful stupid. Not much in the way of infighting. Just good ol' fashioned, "Let's go slay the Dragon, take their stuff, save the day, and get loot" type of D&D.

Interesting note here. Because dice are not allowed on campus (due to kids gambling) they have to make due with little pieces of paper, folded and labeled with numbers.

They have them in paper "bowls" separated according to dice size, and instead of rolling, you just jumble them up, lose your eyes, pick a piece, and unfold it to see what you get.

These kids do some amazing stuff with paper. They even make pencils and knives. If only they knew about papercraft.

    Juvenile Corrections Anon here...

How big anime is amongst blacks depends on where you live. Being black myself, and growing up in a largely white suburban community, I could really get into it and more easily find like minded people.

A lot of the black kids we get at the facility are from small rural areas, or the deep city, and tend to be poorer. They don't have internet, and they generally have more pressing daily concerns that makes makes being a nerd- spending money on videogames, comic books, and cartoons- a relative luxury. They know OF anime, and while they may like DBZ or One Piece, and may even enjoy them, they aren't necessarily fans of Japanese animation in general.

These aren't the wannabe thugs and gangsters we're talking about.

To illustrate just how different it can be, I told one of them I liked comics. His immediate thought was "comic" like comedian (D.L. Hughley, Steve Harvey, etc), not stuff like Superman or Spiderman.

They don't have any general like of Wizards. Actually, they seem to prefer the martial classes. Fighter, Warlord, Ranger, and Rogue are the most popular classes.

Interestingly enough, I've yet to hear of any Divine Classes. Not that I think that they're against involving religion and the like into the game. They just seem more interested in practical characters.

The ironic thing is that this pic kind of sums up my job. I work security.

Most staff overlook the kids at all times, waking them up in the morning, observing them during free time, moving them across campus in a group, etc. It's kind of like being a den mother/father.

Security, however, roams the campus. We check incoming visitors and escort them around campus, make perimeter checks, etc. In the event of a situation, like a kid showing constant behavior problems, getting into a fight, or breaking the rules, we get called in. We pull up in a big van, put them in handcuffs, and take them to the Security unit, which is a building built more or less like a prison, where they sit in a little cell as a sort of "solitary confinement" for a few hours or days/weeks depending on the nature of the offense.

Interesting personal anecdote to add to this. I work in a rehabilitation facility and the sex offenders tended very strongly towards dungeons and dragons(And role playing in general). The psychologists ended up banning it, but I found it fascinating about how many of them flocked to it like bees to honey.

    Did they give a reason?

It was some psychobabble. I wasn't directly involved so I only heard it through secondhand sources. There's a joke about /tg/ and misogyny based on this anecdote, but I can't muster the will to make it.

I remember elves, dwarves and a few gnomes. There wasn't anything particularly patterned about it. Well, except for the fact that it was so emergent in the sex offender segment of the population.

Bumping so this doesn't get lost. I find this utterly fascinating, Newjackfag, and I hope to hear more when you get back.

This is really interesting stuff. I know it's a juvenile corrections and not hardcore prison, but I still have mental images of the DM getting shanked after killing off someone's character. Have any arguments or altercations occurred because of D&D? Any other /tg/ related games being played?
