Hey guys, I was thinking of doing a campaign with some people in my dorm set in dinotopia, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or has done this before.

wiki here for anyone that hasn't read it:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinotopia

The first book mostly just describes the setting with lost of badass pictures of dinosaurs, so I'd just need to flesh it out and come up with modified game mechanics. What system would be best?

The PCs would be able to choose to be either a dinosaur, dolphinback (shipwrecked human) or 2nd-3rd-whatever generation dinotopiain human. there's also the possibility to do a rainy basin predator campaign. PCs are a pack of raptors? FUCK YEAH.

so a system with lost of dinosaurs already listed would be pretty good, also it need to be fairly flexible to allow creation of a wide variety of dinos.

Why the fuck have there not been dinosaur heavy RPG books?

obviously something needs to happen to disrupt the peace of dinotopia to get shit happening, maybe Crab Lee fucking everything up trying to escape?

there;s also all that lost technology in the caves underground and shit.

Fuck you can be a triceratops and bash someone with your head and stab them 3 times at once.

there also needs to be some way to balance human and dino PCs, also what classes would be good? maybe restrict the players to medium size dinosaurs? maybe guns get on the island somehow?

    FUCK I LOVE DINOSAURS
    >> Anonymous 01/25/09(Sun)04:47 No.3513017
I would suggest the players just be humans. Dinosaurs don't have hands, which hiders gameplay quite a lot. At the very least, restrict them from being big dinosaurs, due to brokenness and not being able to enter buildings

Some of the... veggie-raptors? IDK. do have hands and are intelligent.

Likewise, larger bipeds (including carnivores) with ineffective hands could still be good pure martial characters.

So, yea, OP. DO IT FAGGOT.

Some varieties of dinosaurs ought to be playable due to their having hands.

System-wise, I'd run it in Spirit of the Century. In retrospect, a lot of the books just feel like they'd be perfect in that game system, and Lee Crabb seems like the perfect pulp villain.

Watched the movie. It's a touchy-feely piece of shit kids film about how we can all become strong by helping each other, or some bullshit like that. I cried halfway through because, although one of the two main characters has this exact same outlook on Dinotopia, I knew that he would learn an important life lesson about the value of friendship by the end of the movie.

I've actually played in a one off 3.5 campaign where the PCs were all animals who found themselves awakened after drinking from a water hole with some magic bits in it. We were also given a PHG class IIRC we were a sorcerer bird, monk cheetah, barbarian bear, and something else?

the campaign centered around trying to figure out WTF was going on, interacting with humans (that we had no way of talking to) and trying to figure out how to maintain our awakened status.

The movie (and subsequent show) suck. Instead of being light years ahead of the rest of the world, Dinotopia was a primitive (if utopian) backwater. Moreover, the writing was nowhere near as good and the acting was so bad it makes any given episode of Crusoe seem brilliant by comparison.

For once, it's not snobbish to say "the books are better".

Not having to worry about your fuckhueg dinosaur buddy would take a lot out of what made the travels of the first book so interesting. A dinosaur that proves useful in one region can rapidly become a liability in another, and it'll just about never be an issue one way or another in a developed region.

The fact that Dinotopia has dinosaurs is incidental. It's an incredibly well-developed setting, so much so that it's a shame that the fluff sections of actual campaign settings aren't written and illustrated in the same style as Dinotopia. It can be as steampunk as you want it. It can handle court intrigue, airship adventuring, dungeon delving, SCIENCE!, ARCHAEOLOGY!, exploration, deep-sea adventuring, and even film noir-style storylines. It can be as steampunk as the group wants it to be, it can be as primitive as the group wants it to be, and it opens itself up extremely well to the whims of the players.

In fact, fuck it. I'm running a seafaring game soon. I'll lift Dinotopia wholesale and drop the island into it just because. Maybe give them a political isolationist policy instead of reefs keeping people from coming and going so it doesn't fuck over players who want to keep going with the seafaring...

True, but I try to not restrict the freedom of my players for longer than two sessions. The adventure of wandering around an island they may or may not be interested in until they find out about a potential way out would take at least half a session, and the adventure of getting there and off the island would take another three or four sessions. It just seems like bad form overall.

If you've read Lost, you know it doesn't take much to take the setting from being "care-bear" and turning it into something dangerous. Introduce a Lee Crabb or some pirates that managed to get over the reefs or really any antagonist that fits your party and things can get grim fast. After all, Dinotopia, just like any other "nation" (real or imagined) only works because a critical mass of its populace plays by its rules. There will always be some malcontents stirring things up.

If you want to take the easy road of grimdarkan the setting though, you could just run a mash-up, like Dinotopia/Fight Club or Dinotopia/Transmetropolitan.

That could work, but something about turning Dinotopia into a politically isolated nation that heavily restricts exports, tourism, and emigration but turns away no immigrants seems vastly more interesting in the broader scale of a seafaring campaign.

Their society was just so creepy. They were pacifists but that didn't stop them being dicks to anyone who wasn't a massive conformist like them. I really wanted the main characters to start busting heads and show them why pacifism - while noble in itself - is incompatible with being a huge authoritarian prick.

In the books the only advanced technology in Dinotopia proper was the submarine that was built by a shipwrecked outsider other than that dinotopia was straight outta tha 16th century. You're probably thinking of the sunken city that they discovered in the first book, which had all the energy crystals and steampunk styled vehicles.
