So I someone made mention of a theoretical Flash game for Ruby Quest. I personally think its a great idea so that the wonderment of ruby quest can be experienced by others.

I'm sure /tg/ has a pool of talent ranging from people willing to do voices/sound/art/programming.

Is there any word on whether Weaver would be interested in such a project?
    >> Anonymous 02/04/09(Wed)22:43 No.3616898
I disagree. RubyQuest has been told. Set in stone even. I would rather just have it adapted into a Flash cartoon as oppose to a game. That would be hot.

    Fappable even.

Tom, Ruby and Jay finally make it to the station at the end of the tram track. As the tram approaches they see a group of soldiers waiting for them. Ruby begins to step off the tram, telling the soldiers that there's still people left back in Metal Glen, but she stops in mid-sentence, gore splattering out from the back of her head as a bullet zips through her third eye. Tom and Jay look on in horror as she falls limply to the ground, and the camera pans up to watch the sunset as the sound of gunfire erupts from below.

Maddie didn't come back because the treatment wears off after a while. That's why the treatment involved weekly doses of the medication.

The medication has certainly worn off on Tom (check that eye, yo!) and it wore off on Red, too. After all, Red was eating the cereal and the cure makes it so you don't need to eat.

Red finally got his wish. After almost a year of trying, he gets to rest in peace.

I DID like the final "twist" at the end where it's revealed that the Hound, "Daisy", is still alive. It's thematically poignant, provides great imagery for the cyclical nature of the nightmare that is the Glen, and even suggests that there may still be hope for those left, that they may one day learn to work together and escape as well.

I could see Stitches and Daisy, after a number of deaths/retries, finally teaming up and getting out, maybe even with a dazed Filbert in tow.

Even if they were, the 'infection' clearly isn't contagious the way we first thought and it has a limited period of activity away from the source. That's the second-last battle. But it's still cool.

Also, I like the idea that we could've saved Bella. That we could have found a way of getting her off the machine without killing her, like some portable life support or something. Unlikely to happen, kills some of the drama, but a nice idea to play with.
    *Bella rises from her desk*
*Ruby and Tom stare in astonishment as it's revealed that her lower body is entirely cybernetic*
Bella: "...Let's face it, this is by far not the strangest thing you've seen."

That color scheme reminds me: I like how our expectations were played with. Everyone was coloring the Hound like she was Daisy, then we find out there was a patient named Maddie, and everyone assumes she's the Hound we met.

...then at the end it turns out Maddie was permadead long before the adventure even started and we really DID meet Daisy.
The fanart galleries are going to look weird, with this brief period of brown-colored Hounds interrupting all the yellow/blue ones.

Given the open-endedness of RubyQuest, it would be very difficult to recreate a flash game faithful to the original. RubyQuest was easy to design since you never had to make a branching point in the story, but a full game would have to incorporate ALL possible paths in the game (ie. what would happen if Ruby & Tom decided to split up? Or befriend the doctor?) and still make them just as interesting as the 'true' path (or at least worth the trip).

I guess you have a point. Those are his inner emotions, then, I suppose. He has never cared about anything but his orders.

Just plain ellipses would be far too uninformative, and imply that he'd be true neutral or something instead, unless you had seen the story and knew better.

The best, ultimate ending could unlock some information and videos about how the whole thing started, the Lost Year, perhaps even how the Old God ended up down there to begin with (okay maybe not the last one). I'd like to see some critical moments of Ruby and Tom's earlier escape attempts: Like how they met Bella for the first time, for instance.

Theory about Ruby's rampage: the Idol was using her as its puppet before Ace, but upon being CANE'd to death by Red her mind reset and the Idol lost the work he'd done on her. But it's only a temporary setback: he switches over to Ace immediately afterwards.

Ace wasn't "lucky" enough to get killed, so the Idol ended up in complete control and at some point steered his body into Cold Storage and turned him into the Oogie-Boogie analogue we all fear.

As for obeying Bella, that was either the Idol making him act naturally or it was just a coincidence that both she and it wanted similar things. Either way, it began acting on its own (in Ace's body) when it became clear that Ruby and Tom were close to escaping.

I'll be honest, RubyQuest was really, really good- but it wasn't that open ended.

Sure, you COULD do some things, but most everything you could do had some significance on the story, and what you could do was limited in the way you would expect in an adventure game.

Remember the door we busted down? Remember the other way to open it? There was only one way to open it, with Tom and the crowbar.

The only REAL open-endedness wouldn't have THAT much of an impact on the story. Say we take Filbert's body and chuck it into the fan. What happens then? He doesn't interfere with us again.

Some things would either kill us immediately, or change the ending (perhaps the same could be said of all horror games). Some things MAY uncover new information- but that's it. There wasn't too much we could do differently.

He regenerated, came after us, we shook him off, he found us again, he got SPEARED, he fucked off for a bit then came back. Belle wasn't ever someone who tried to kill Tom and Ruby, Ace was.

We could have saved Nook, if we hadn't been so paranoid. We might also have had a shot in destroying the evil being stuck down there - if it wasn't too powerful. Saving Stitches would've been possible.

If we had had the guts to go through the Elemental Plane of Teeth -door, we might have died, sure, but we might also have survived, and discovered some crucial stuff.

Rescuing Bella, Filbert, Daisy, or even Red, would take very, very much stretching, and require that we took a totally different route almost from the beginning and had information about the game already, but it's not compeletely impossible - perhaps for the Ultimate Ending?

Each ending filled in different detailis of the overarcing plot, so it was necessary to play to all of them to get the full picture of what was going on.

This might be a good model to go on. I think the best way to do is to just have two endings: One 'Good' ending explaining half the story, and a 'Bad or Evil' ending explaining the other half. I also like how SoD forces a time limit to solve puzzles, which is not unlike RubyQuest.

the weaver has actually used a lot of animal crossing characters as his on other boards while being a drawfag. The only difference is that they lack the finer detail of what they are based off of in this particular series of his.

No. He went insane. He was insane when he attacked Ace at the end (he wasn't doing it out of gratitude. He had no brain, only another mouth)

    >Rescuing Bella, Filbert, Daisy, or even Red, would take very, very much stretching, and require that we took a totally different route almost from the beginning and had information about the game already, but it's not compeletely impossible - perhaps for the Ultimate Ending?

Doubt it. Bella would need a portable life support machine, Filbert was always crazy, so was Daisy, Red wouldn't have tried to escape- it would have validated the fact that he was captured.

So many things were left ambiguous, that you may never be completely certain of any of these. Unless Weaver tells us exactly how it is, we may never know.

At the very least, I'm sure it was possible to get to know exactly what happened and how, and what was responsible. Weaver wouldn't've given us all those weird hints if he hadn't written the entire story, and he'dn't've written the story in the first place if he didn't have any intention of telling it to us, if we worked it out.

    Also,

All this means is that the transition from /tg/ to a flash game (or even an older school, more traditional text) wouldn't be too difficult.

Kill Tom AND Ruby if skull is pushed (close everything and gas)

Red kills Ruby if she refuses to give him the coins.

Ace FUCKS EVERYTHING UP SHIT YEAH if he catches up to you. The only way to escape him is:
    1) Climb up the tube
    2) SPEAR HIM

Filbert kills you if you don't lock the closet.

If you somehow kill Tom and still manage to escape (I think it's possible, replace MANLY PHYSIQUE with PSYCHIC FUCK YOUR SHIT UP) Worst end

If you don't save Stitches: RONERY end

If you do what we did: BEST END

Yes, that's a great idea. Throw the Eldritch Totem into the chaotic rift being caused by some Eldritch Horror.

The Brig's pit opened because it was the original resting place of whatever ancient horror we awakened, and that power was starting to leak through.

While I agree on most of your points, I don't think Stitches was entirely insane. He might not have had full control over his actions, but he was not fully insane.

And hell, if Daisy was recoverable, so would have been Stitches. He might have still been a reincarnation or two away from enough control over his sanity to be safe, but I don't think he was an entirely lost cause. As far as we can tell, it is possible to regain your form and sanity after being even mutated as bad as Daisy.

Tell me at what point Nook was savable? By the time we found him he had already become a terrible monster.

Also saving Stitches would have had less of a powerful impact than the regretful monster who loves his former friends and wishes them no harm despite his paper thin control over his monstrous side. Whom finds the picture of his friends that Ruby left behind for him, and gathering up the last ounce of his control waits to take down ace in a blaze of sacrificial glory while his friends make an escape for the surface.

    >Tell me at what point Nook was savable? By the time we found him he had already become a terrible monster.

Well, I might be reaching a bit here, but... Stitches was cured very fast, even from beyond death. Twice so, even, just during the last few days before escape. I think it could've been plausible to cut Nook away from those vines of his, and if it turned out to be lethal or otherwise hurt him, we could've put him to the lockers to heal. No more madness, either.

And whether we could save him or not, he might've been a very valuable ally. Or at the very least, having him on our side would've meant that there was nothing to be afraid of him anymore, giving us more time and freedom to investigate around the facility.

And yes, saving Stitches would've had less emotional impact, but if he hadn't showed up and Tom had died buying time for Ruby, I'm sure it'd've been rather emotional too. The point being, emotional =/= good.

On an unrelated matter, I also think that with enough information, and by putting a bit more weight upon finding the truth, and less upon simply getting out, we might've been capable of destroying the BBEG, which would've been pretty much the best possible ending (unless either Ruby or Tom died while doing it). We could've thrown something at the Teeth Door, like Filbert's corpse: If it had reacted favourably, as in not eat him, we could've investigated further. Surely Red's room might've contained some crucial information about the beast?

Oh and, what about the amnesia? Did the creature eat their memories or something? Or were they just pushed away into the depths of the patients' minds, by the treatment? Could they ever be recovered? I think we should've asked Weaver about this.

The whole point of the game was that we didn't want to feel safe. Making everyone out ally would mean that the game would be no fun. Death and subsequent treatment in the lockers pretty much restores the body to normal. Mutations possibly start to emerge, and with continuing treatment (while alive) the mutations grow stronger. After a short time without treatment the mutations no longer grow.

That explains a lot of the weirdness in the game. Why Ace goes around putting people back into lockers. Every time they go through a healing cycle they become closer to whatever the ancient evil wants them to be. Also why Stitches and Daisy came back mostly normal-looking after we killed them, and why Stitches always looked worse after each stretch of time we didn't encounter him.

That explains Ruby and Tom's mutations, too. They likely died (again) shortly before the game started, so they were starting fresh. At most, Ruby went through one cycle of living treatment during the backout period. So she grew the third eye but it never got any worse because they avoided being stuffed into a locker during the game. Tom's arms were probably developed during his last cycle of death/treatment (whenever that was--we don't know.) It can be assumed his missing eye (which I think was removed by Filbert, I don't completely remember) was starting to mutate, too, but since it was removed and he was never treated again it didn't grow back.

I've had my fun, I'm more than happy to let it be, I don't want anything more than what we already have. But it'd be nice to have some sort of medium that could be shared with other people.

As much as I think the archived threads are awesome, to people who never experienced Ruby Quest it might not be as palatable.
