A continuation of the thread from >>4483093. Current topic: Sororitas characters, the various branches of the career and how they're not all trigger-happy idiots.
    >> Anonymous 05/08/09(Fri)11:14 No.4500813
I only PC-killed with my Sororitas once. It was in a one-shot, and the group decided to mess about with some biological mutant shit. I shot the techpriest in the chest, the group was like 'Okayforgetthatthen'. Then as we left they shoved me down an elevator shaft.

Protip for psykers, techpriests and other borderline heretical characters that are near Sororitas.

    GET SOME TALKING SKILLS!

Convince her or explain it to the Sororitas before she shoots you in the head. And stay focussed. All the time. You need to "guide" her. :3 Yeah, you can totally make that creepy roleplay...

So now I'm thinking of doing some writefaggotry. An inquisition cell consisting of three Sororitas, one from each branch. One angry, violent, judgmental, militant sister, bigger than the other three and the leader simply because she doesn't hesitate. A friendlier, cuter, but no less unforgiving sister from the Hospitallers, the face of the group who is much more social. A somewhat shy, withdrawn Diogolous who is always holding a book almost like a security blanket, who might be violent if only she had the nerve.

    >>4500895 Hospitallers can be pretty awesome, especially since the usual DH group consists almost entirely of combatants and lacks characters taking care of other equally useful things. Also, religious zeal combined with a focus on medical skills provides a lot of cool roleplaying opportunities. Pic related.

Awesome novel, mostly because of the fuckton of interesting background fluff. And because the author did a pretty good job of creating a believable cast (not easy considering the amount of indoctrination Sisters are subjected to). Definitively a good resource for DH players considering a Sororitas character.

    >>4500889
I've always liked the idea of DH in "focus-mode". Be it with a Sororitas kill team (Purity Control anyone?) or an IG squad or Necromunda P&P. Lots of potential.

When the current mission I'm running for one group ends I'm thinking of running a short "cult raid" session in between it and the next mission. Give the players an option to swap in a combat focused character for a bit and go scourging and purging.

    >>4504564
I've heard of that idea over in the older FFG forums. Some players basically had two groups of characters - their normal ones for investigation, and a group of OP combatants the first group could request for raids.
Sounded like it could work pretty good, though personally I'm used to stick to a single character and focus on developing that one.

I don't intend for the combat romp to be anywhere near as important as the rest of the game, just an indulgence for those already playing combat focused characters and a chance for the adepts to cut loose and make some ice cold killers. Unless they want to bring their adepts along, which is perfectly fine. A Medicae is always useful, and the other one has a fine, fine sidearm and foolish amounts of bravery.

And above that, there are numerous ways of denying a Sororitas character this kind of equipment without breaking the fluff or disallowing that career class entirely.

Like, for example, INCONSPICIOUSNESS! Pretty sure a suit of Angel-pattern power armour and a boltgun will kinda ruin the idea of disguise.

Or just have the character remain in her novitiate, RP-wise (without disallowing levelups, obviously), and give her appropriate equipment (carapace and lasgun).

That, and ... well, there's more to the Sororitas than just the Sisters Militant.

I once made a Dialogous Sororitas and was hoping to use my singing skills. She turned bitter and cynical near the end of the campaign, the only thing keeping her near sane was a fellow Sister who was mind controlled by the Tau for a while. Never killed her for heresy, even though I should've, but she was the only surviving Sister who was sent with others to take back the planet from the Tau so my character felt like she had to protect her and teach her the glory of the Emperor.

The only time an acolyte of any class should get power armour is if they are marching into the jaws of hell to do battle. Otherwise it's overkill/conspicuous as fuck.
    >> Frazer !!NNiZ5EzzZEM 05/08/09(Fri)21:00 No.4505190
One idea for a Sororitas-based campaign that I mooted a few months ago was to remove it from the wider world entirely - show the group at the very start of its formation, when they're still Novitiates at the local Priory.

The members are all individuals going about their normal routine, but they start to come together as they each begin noticing strange things afoot - items of the Convent's treasures going missing, hearing people shuffling about in the corridors outside the dormitories even though the curfew is strict, bolters 'accidentally' being filled with live ammunition during field training, something peculiar about the batch of initiates that arrived after graduating from the regional Schola Progenium, and so on.

It's a cloister-drama, with opportunity for interaction and investigative skills, leading to your group foiling some dastardly plot on their own initiative. In the aftermath, an Interrogator arrives to survey the scene and make sure any Chaotic presence is contained, and seeing how well your heroines work together, invites them to become a cell of Acolytes.
    >> Frazer !!NNiZ5EzzZEM 05/08/09(Fri)21:06 No.4505244
    >>4505078

On a different note, I think that this is a great design for an unarmoured Sister - while still having an air of martial practicality about it, it's not just a generic uniform but is distinctive and retains the Sororitas' visual motifs.

Neat idea. A Sisterhood monastery being infiltrated by Chaos (like it happened in Daemonifuge) surely is a cool plot that allows for a lot of suspence, given all the religious background there. Not to mention that the devotion to their superiors and the codex would clash with the nagging suspicion that something isn't as it should be. Definitively a cool plot.

Imagine one or more daemonic entities having possessed the Canoness and her elite guard during a mission, and when they return they set out to slowly convert the whole abbey - one Sister at a time.

Or alternatively, have the Repentia Mistress starting to enjoy her duties a bit too much and being tainted by Slaanesh, then planning to depose of the Canoness and reform the convent into something more "suitable".

Thanks man, glad you like it. It's what I imagined a Sororitas novice like, given the carapace starting gear.

Have a more crappy sketch of some novices at melee training under the watchful eyes of a senior Sister.

A tangent from Sister-based discussion: the new Rogue Trader design diary talks about the Astropath Transcendent and Eishenhorne/Ravenour style psykerings. The ability to hold back and ward off psychic phenomena or go all out and pretty much guarantee them. It might be possible that we'll be seeing a reworking of the psyker rules for the wider game.

Several people have voiced disappointment with the psyker system essentially being a port of the WFRP magic system. Hopefully this will appease them and lead to overall improvements. It *would* be nice to reign in your powers a bit and rule out psychic phenomena. A safe psyker can use his powers carefully rather than just abstaining from use.

It's always good to see events beyond the battlefield as well - it makes everything seem that much more vivid and complete.

The Hospitallier's kit is decent as well - there's a consistency of theme which lets you visualise the progression from that to the final full miniature.

Heh, the Daemonifuge comic picture in the FFG article totally fits into this topic - given that the people portrayed are servants of the Sisterhood.
I wonder if there's a reason why they were going for this pic or if they just thought that it's cool.

Interesting to see that the DH guys were reading Daemonifuge, though. I'm still wondering what Rogue Trader will mean to the Sororitas career.

Rogue Trader has a bunch of new careers. It'll be DH compatible, but if your acolytes step into that tier of play it'll almost certainly be under the command of the Inquisition working with your gracious Rogue Trader host. Alternatively a Sister or two could be dispatched with a particularly pious (and favoured by the Ecclesiarchy) Rogue Trader to tend to the faith of the crew.

Phew, thanks again! I'm still an amateur, but I just like designing stuff.

Pic attached was my first attempt for the novice, btw. I later added the coat and changed the boots (though I still see them dropping the coat for stuff like the close combat lessons in the other image). And I'm happy with how she turned out in the end.

I've read about the compatibility, as well as the new careers. This is actually what makes me ponder. I fear that they have introduced the Sororitas too early, in that they would fit in much better with the RT-tier.

After all, what much more is there after becoming a Legatine in DH? I don't want Sisters to end up weaker than the new Stormtrooper career, as that would be kinda laughable.

Yes, I think that changing the boots was a good idea - it does look odd for the Novitiate costume to be consciously less ornate but for them to suddenly gothic it up for the greaves. The second version has Sororitas motifs but it also emphasises their trainee nature - it's a fact that the girls haven't matured fully into the pious grandeur of the full Sisters yet. They have to earn the right to tromp about like a walking basilica. ;)

The Adepta Sororitas are far, far more at home with aiding the Inquisition than jaunting off into the unexplored regions of space in search of profit, though.

I'm mainly happy they cropped up because they also brought about the Black Priest of Maccacbeus. Sweet, sweet Pure Faith for my cleric and an excuse for him to go completely barking mad.

I suppose that one way to play that sort of scenario would be to show the Sororitas struggling to reoncile the different ways that one may serve the Emperor.

Throughout her career, the Sister has been instructed to look not upon the alien, listen not unto the alien, speak not of the alien - and yet while the Rogue Trader here consorts with aliens, he can't be considered a heretic because he has an actual real and physical legal dispensation to do so with his Letter of Marque - and he wins profit to enrich the Imperium by it!

It's quite a moral quandary for a Battle Sister, although Famulans - being well-versed in politics - and Dialogians - who frequently become xenologists - would have no such problems.

In fact, that's a convenient way of working Sororitas into a Rogue Trader setting - they're a 'field trip' of Ordo Dialogus xenologists who are accompanying the Trader on an expedition in order to apply their classroom learning with real interaction with aliens. Watchful Mistresses are assessing their progress, seeing if the Dialogians can manage the careful balancing act of being convivial and polite to aliens' faces, while continuing to righteously despise them in human company.

Well, not really. In fact, RT offers a lot of potential here. Let's take a look at the Liber Sororitas:

"The Orders Hospitaller work closely with the Missionarus Galaxia to provide clinics and hospitals on newly discovered worlds, bringing the wonders of their science and belief to the natives."

"A significant part of the activities of the Orders Hospitaller is devoted to maintaining adequate medical care standards among Imperial armies, primarily the Imperial Guard and Navy. Sisters from the Orders are generally trained in Navy or Guard protocol in order to have them integrate seamlessly into the units with which they are stationed, and will in turn provide those units with basic training in field medicine. Most Imperial capital ships carry a Hospitaller shrine, acting as the main medical facility of the fleet, and also relaying reports from field agents in the fleet's vicinity to the Convents via secure Astropaths."

"When a Missionary finds a new civilisation, a Sister from the Dialogous will be assigned to help him learn the native language and communicate with the newly discovered people. The Dialogous also accompanies the Navy and Imperial Guard, translating the orders of the high command into the patois and languages of the common soldiers."

    >he can't be considered a heretic because he has an actual real and physical legal dispensation to do so with his Letter of Marque

It gets even better if he bears one of THE original Rogue Trader charters, signed by you-know-who himself. Go read Legacy of the Shira Culpernia trilogy if you want to see the effect the big E's signature has on some Sororitas.

And yes, such a scenario would certainly test the limits of a character's Pure Faith.
    >> Anonymous 05/08/09(Fri)22:23 No.4505872
    cont. from >>4505868

"Sisters of the Orders Dialogous are assigned to Explorator vessels, Navy capital ships, Administratum diplomatic missions and Imperial Guard regiments. Except in extraordinary circumstances, an assigned Sister will never be reassigned as long as their vessel, mission or regiment exists. Newly assigned Sisters spend much time studying and memorising the particular dialects and colloquialisms of the groups within their area of influence, to ensure exact translations not only of words but also of meanings when their skills are called into service. Because of this custom, Sisters of the Orders Dialogous have a reputation as being more sociable than members of other Sororitas Orders are."

"A typical minor Order Militant may be responsible for [...] and any number of smaller sites, including shrines, sanctuary-churches, cities and outposts. [...] Other sites may be maintained by as few as two Sisters, in the case of shrines, or up to fifty for major port-cities, where the risk of off-world contamination of locals is greatest. These Sisters carry out the necessary duties of protecting vulnerable Ecclesiarchal figures, ensuring the proper care of sacred artefacts, protecting the grounds of important Ministorum buildings and liaising with local defence forces and militia groups to ensure their purity and readiness to fight."

As you can see, plenty of things for a Sister of any kind to do on one of the larger Rogue Trader vessels - though admittedly, there's likely to be some internal tension, depending on the Lord-Captain's stance towards xenos and the Imperial Creed. Then again, this is potential for roleplaying as well.

Exactly what I was thinking. The "earning the right" is actually the whole hook of the martial novice equipment. I figured the novices might be required to go through a Trial by Fire to be acknowledged as a fully fledged Sister. Which might well include temporary assignment to a group of Acolytes. ;)

Clerics are an odd bunch. They're faces, but not like Scum are. They gain access to Deceive and Charm later, but they grab Command at rank 4 and Command +10 at rank 5. They focus on swaying the masses rather than on talking down individuals. They also get access to several talents that make them more able to stand firm in the face of adversity, both in terms of staving off fear and simply refusing to die. They also get access to some lores (mostly on the non-forbidden side) and tend to favour ranged weaponry over melee.

Once you hit the branch at rank 6 you can choose to focus on more on investigation, social skills and lore or go down the branch of scourge and purge. At rank 8 for the latter path you'll end up something like this guy.

Just to get an idea of how Rogue Star is pitched, is it being described as a 'second tier' game - i.e, your characters will top out of Dark Heresy and be promoted Rogue Star adventures - or is it equivalent tier, running alongside our usual adventuresof Inquisitorial Acolytes?
    >> Anonymous 05/09/09(Sat)07:14 No.4508436
    >>4507489
Ross Watson said in one interview that starting Rogue Trader characters will be roughly equivalent to DH characters of about 5500xp, which is late Rank 5. Each career has their own unique ability, apparently, something which no other career can get access to. I believe it was in this podcast. It's a long one, but it's entirely about Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader and features lots of interesting information about the future of the games.
