    I have an idea /tg/.

D&D whatever edition. All the players play as Spiders. Intelligent spiders. Maybe even spellcasting spiders, I haven't decided yet.

What should the different spider classes available be, and how would they work?
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)00:14 No.4727728
This can only end up as awesome.

    Well you'd have jumping spiders...

    Web spinners...

Net spiders... (the ones that throw their web at pray)

    Funnel spiders...

    Tarantulas...

I could actually see this working if the spider made some kind of advanced lightweight silk kite/glider for itself.

I mean, spiderlings already 'balloon' by shooting silk into the air and floating away. It's not difficult to imagine the silk being used for more things.

In fact, I bet spiders would even make and wear their own clothing.
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)00:20 No.4727812
Well, if they're going to be giant spiders, perhaps we should think up some alternative form of respiration?

Because spiracles and book lungs don't scale up that well...

Jumping spiders can jump something like 30 times their body length. That'd be a pretty crazy distance in D&D. Like, I don't even think my giant D&D whiteboard is big enough for that.

The Monster Burner for Burning Wheel has a huge chapter on intelligent spiders as a race for PCs. They're broken down roughly by type of spider- capture method and habitat. They're also matriarchal and the males don't do much except avoid the females. The material could be adapted really easily, it's mostly fluff.

    >Spellcasting spiders

I can already see players doing crazy shit with gaze and touch attack spells.

How the hell would a gaze spell work for a spider, anyways? They've got almost full 3D vision, would it effect everything around them? If gaze attacks only work through the two primary eyes that can focus, then what about the web spiders who don't have those kinds of eyes? Can they no longer make gaze attacks?

fuck, /tg/, where the fuck do you come up with this shit, fuck

this is.. actually pretty awesome, though I'm imagining 'bunnies and burrows; arachnid edition' moreso than.. 8-legged freaks.. consider perhaps a conventional-sized, communal spider species of much higher brain-function than we're used to, to the point of being semi-self cognizant and living in a sort of.. 'hive of individuals' (less zerg, more china) with specially-bred 'castes' of spiders for different tasks, (jumpers for hunting etc, you get the picture) living in a human world, but incapable of communication with humans for obvious reasons.

The spiders could perform actions known to most other social crawlers, like agriculture (the product of which is used to lure prey/feed domesticated termites bred for their docility and substantiality of juices) and perhaps the objective would be to establish a DYNASTIC SPIDER EMPIRE while eluding human scientists.

Now we just need to incorporate the 'zombie ant' fly as a plot device.. http://news.yahoo.com/s/mcclatchy/20090512/sc_mcclatchy/3231765

Which system would be best for reflecting all the arachnid traits? What classes would there be? Or could one combine spider species (just broad terms like jumping, orb, bola, crab spider etc.) and a base class (fighter, stalker, web weaver/sorcerer/quantum manipulator)?
Would the setting be fantasy or science fiction? A sentient race of space-faring spiders would be pretty kick-ass, trying to envelop everything in their OneWeb.

    oh god.

These spiders could take on attributes of other life forms by taking paralysed, live specimens and getting biomancy caste specialists to map out their genome and then add favourable traits to the spider gene pool - more specimens are required for more advanced biomancy.

    The players could play as

    >Their feral form is a swarm of spiders. They can bite their way into a person's brain and become connecting nodes in the host's nerve system. Eventually they take the body over completely.

this sort of idea, and after a character's death, other party members could salvage the 'nodes' that make up the character's identity and place it into a fresh body. This also hypothetically makes it possible to change class by 'appropriating' bodies of other spiders, perhaps ones grown implicitly for this purpose, without brains.

The Weaver, a multi-dimensional being in the form of a giant spider, who speaks in a never-ending torrent of free-verse poetry.

...AGAIN AGAIN AND AGAIN DO NOT WITHHOLD THIS BLADED SUMMONS THIS EDGED HYMN I ACCEPT I AGREE YOU SLICE SO NICE AND NICELY YOU LITTLE ENDOSKELETAL FIGURINES YOU SNIP AND SHAVE AND SLIVER THE CORDS OF THE WOVEN WEB AND SHAPE IT WITH AN UNCOUTH GRACE

Rudgutter had trained himself rigorously. He was an unimaginative man, a cold man who ruled himself with industrial discipline. He could no longer feel terror.
But, gazing at the Weaver, he came close.
It was worse, more frightening by far than the ambassador. The Hellkin were appalling and awesome, monstrous powers for which Rudgutter had the most profound respect. And yet, and yet...he understood them. They were tortured and torturing, calculating and capricious. Shrewd. Comprehensible. They were political.
The Weaver was utterly alien. There could be no bargaining and no games. It had been tried.
Rudgutter conquered himself, angry, judging himself harshly, studying the thing before him in an attempt to itemize and metabolize the sight.
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)11:13 No.4732937
The Weaver’s bulk was mostly its huge teardrop abdomen that welled up and hung downwards behind it from its neck-waist, a tight, bulbous fruit seven feet long and five wide. It was absolutely taut and smooth, its chitin a shimmering black iridescence.
The creature’s head was the size of a man’s chest. It was suspended from the front of the abdomen a third of the way from the top. The fat curve of its body loomed above it like skulking black-clad shoulders.
The head swivelled slowly to take in its visitors.
The top as smooth and spare as a human skull in black: multiple eyes a single, deep blood-red. Two main orbs as large as new-borns’ heads sat in sunken sockets at either side; between them a much smaller third; above it two more; above them three more still. An intricate, precise constellation of glints on dark crimson. An unblinking array.
The Weaver’s complicated mouthparts unhinged, its inner jaw flexing, something between a mandible and a black ivory trap. Its wet gullet flexed and vibrated deep within.
Its legs, thin and bony as human ankles, sprouted from the thin band of segmented flesh that linked its headpiece and abdomen. The Weaver walked on its hindmost four legs. They shot up and out at a forty-five-degree angle, hinging in knees a foot or more above the Weaver’s hunkered head, higher than the top of its abdomen. The legs rebounded from the joints almost straight down ten feet, culminating in a point as featureless and sharp as a stiletto.
Like a tarantula, the Weaver picked one leg up at a time, lifting it very high and placing it down with the delicacy of a surgeon or an artist. A slow, sinister and inhuman movement.
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)11:14 No.4732948
From the same intricate fold as that great quadrupedal frame emerged two sets of shorter legs. One pair, six feet long, rested pointing upwards at the elbows. Each thin, hard shaft of chitin ended in an eighteen-inch talon, a cruel, polished shard of russet shell edged like a scalpel. At the base of each weapon sprouted a curl of arachnid-bone, a sharpened hook to snag and slice and hold prey.
Those organic kukris jutted up like wide horns, like lances. An ostentatious display of murderous potential.
And in front of them, the final, shorter pair of limbs hung down. At their tips, held midway between the Weaver’s head and the ground, a pair of thin and tiny hands. Five-fingered and slender, only smooth fingertips without nails and skin the alien, nacreous black of pure pitch distinguished them from the hands of human children.
The Weaver bent its elbows up a little and held these hands together, clasping and rubbing them together slowly and incessantly. It was a furtive, disturbingly human motion, like that of an untrustworthy, simpering priest.
The spearpoint feet crept closer. The red-black claws swivelled a little and glinted in the non-light. The hands stroked each other.
The Weaver’s body rocked back and alarmingly forward again.

Enemies? Well, there's the Hymenoepimecis argyraphaga wasp. This one begins like the usual parasitic wasps - it paralyzes the spider, albeit temporarily, and lays an egg inside it. The larva hatches and begins eating the spider inside out. The craziness begins when the larva is ready to pupate.

The larva, you see, forces the spider to weave the web it wants (which, no doubt, to the spider itself looks like R'lyehi architecture) instead of the usual pattern. The altered pattern is designed to defend the pupa against external threats such as rain.

On the left you see the standard pattern. On the right is the pattern the wasp larva forces the spider to weave.

Aside from the occasional super-hive, spiders are individualistic creatures, and it is from these individuals that the player characters will come. Specialists in their field, a group of lone wolves forced to work together to overcome their foes.
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)11:22 No.4733021
The militia guard tensed as the Weaver stalked its slow ballet over to Rescue. It spread out the fingers of one hand, held it up in front of Rescue’s face, pushed it closer and closer to him. The air around the humans thickened at the Weaver’s approach. Rudgutter fought down an impulse to wipe his face, to clean it of that unseen clinging silk. Rescue set his jaw. The militia murmured with dithering impotence. Their uselessness was brought home.
Rudgutter watched the little drama uneasily. The last but one time he had spoken to the Weaver, it had illustrated a point it was making, a figure of speech of some kind, by reaching out to the militia captain flanking Rudgutter, lifting him into the air and filleting him slowly, drawing one of its talons through his armour up the side of his abdomen and around under the chin, drawing out bone after steaming bone. The man had screamed and flopped and screamed as the Weaver eviscerated him, its mournful voice resonating in Rudgutter’s head as it explained itself in its oneiric riddles.
Rudgutter knew that the Weaver would do anything that it considered improved the worldweave. It might pretend to be dead or reshape the stone of the floor into a statue of a lion. It might pluck out Eliza’s eyes. Whatever it took to shape the pattern in the fabric of the aether that only it could see, whatever it took to Weave the tapestry into shape.
The memory of Kapnellior discussing Textorology—the science of Weavers—flitted in and out of Rudgutter’s mind. Weavers were fabulously rare, and only intermittent inhabitants of conventional reality. Only two Weaver corpses had been procured by New Crobuzon’s scientists since the city’s birth. Kapnellior’s was hardly an exact science.

It's surprising how fast we can go from mind controlling, flesh-eating parasites to wasp larva (does that mean little girl? "She told me that was her imago form!") on spider lesbianism.

Well, here's a picture of the adult wasp.
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)11:23 No.4733036
Kapnellior himself was an Evolutionist. He held to the view that the Weavers were a species of conventional spider that had been subjected by some Torquic or thaumaturgic fluke—thirty, forty thousand years ago, probably in Sagrimai—to a sudden, short-lived evolutionary acceleration of explosive velocity. Within a few generations, he had explained to Rudgutter, the Weavers evolved from virtually mindless predators into aestheticians of astonishing intellectual and materio-thaumaturgic power, superintelligent alien minds who no longer used their webs to catch prey, but were attuned to them as objects of beauty disentanglable from the fabric of reality itself. Their spinnerets had become specialized extradimensional glands that Wove patterns in with the world. The world which was, for them, a web.
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)11:24 No.4733044
Old stories told how Weavers would kill each other over aesthetic disagreements, such as whether it was prettier to destroy an army of a thousand men or to leave it be, or whether a particular dandelion should or should not be plucked. For a Weaver, to think was to think aesthetically. To act—to Weave—was to bring about more pleasing patterns. They did not eat physical food: they seemed to subsist on the appreciation of beauty.
A beauty unrecognized by humans or other denizens of the mundane plane.
Rudgutter was praying fervently that the Weaver did not decide that slaughtering Rescue would make a pretty pattern in the aether.
After tense seconds, the Weaver retreated, still holding up its hand with splayed fingers. Rudgutter exhaled with relief, heard his colleagues and the militia guard do the same.

Because they exist on multiple planes of existence they are extremely difficult to kill by physical means and are suited to the task of killing monsters that do not exist entirely in on dimension.

Imagine, the spider army assaulting a wasp hive on a high branch, the wasps wondering why they aren't climbing the tree to attack the hive directly (The spiders know that to enter the hive would put them at a disadvantage) when suddenly a wasp sentry spots a large shape shambling towards the tree and panic spreads like fire.

"THE SPIDERS HAVE A COCONUT CRAB!" The shout goes up and then they understand their plan. They aren't going to enter the hive and fight, they're going to cleave the hive clean off the tree and smash it against the ground.

Centipedes and Spiders aren't so different. They're both predators, though centipedes take a more active approach than most spiders. Due to the large difference in appearance, though, the two species rarely interact, viewing each other as rivals. They will cooperate when faced with a bigger threat, but generally a spider encountering a centipede will end in a fight.

Scratch that, apparently centipedes of the larger varieties prey on spiders much more than I thought. Perhaps centipedes are an incredibly self-loathing race. Their creation myth tells of how they were originally spiders cursed by the Spider God Atlach-Nacha to lose their previous holy form for some theological offence. They grew hundreds of legs and lost the ability to spin the sacred webs.

Now they've found a new god. One who promises them revenge against all of spider-kind. To praise him, they roam the forests preying on spiders wherever they can, every kill bringing them closer to exterminating all trace of their past digressions.

Grasshoppers are a friendly and shy race of some intelligence. They roam the lands offering their trades to whomever accepts it.

Grasshoppers are usually shunned and preyed upon because of their curse. If a significant population of grasshoppers gather together, they lose all of their self control and become mindless beasts concerned only with fucking and eating.

Giant locust swarms can render tracts of land completely consumed. Those who try to resist are engulfed in a horde of mindless locust devourers. Once food sources become scarce and the locusts are separated from one another they revert back into a docile grasshopper, painfully aware of the savage beast within.

Small bands of grasshopper rangers try to fight the curse by diverting locust swarms and destroying food sources (cutting the hand to save the body approach). Others have given in completely to their other nature and have gained some self control over their locust forms, although they lack the ability to revert back to grasshopper forms. These Locust warlords lead swarms in new directions.

We waited. We watched. In the shadows we grew. As the mammal two-legs built their cities of wood and rock and metal, we adapted, we infiltrated. Us, and our....lesser kin.

When the mammal two-legs destroyed themselves, we survived. We scuttled to the dark places, and waited. We do not know if it was simply the passage of time, or something to do with what the mammal two-legs own demise, but when we emerged, we were changed.

We knew. We thought. We remembered. Free from the shackles of instinct, sitting on the bones of two-leg arrogance, we could plot our own courses in this ravaged world. The two-leg's apocalypse had been devastating to the other mammals, avians, and reptiles. But not so to us and our kin.

Over the eons, we had survived. What we lacked in size, we made up for with tenacity, cunning, and venom. Now, we added thought to that list. Now, we will claim the world that lies before us.

We do not fear the centipede. We do not fear the cockroach. We do not fear the rat. We do not fear the hawk. We do not fear the mammal. We do not fear at all.

Welcome to your birthright, hatchling. Welcome to the Arachnopocalypse.

The Green Death they called it. 'Course the scientists say it was just another mantis, perfectly natural. But I saw what it did to the trap we built for it. I saw good spiders torn to pieces by that... thing. It was no ordinary insect.

We first heard word about young 'uns disappearing. They'd go off into the forest and just... never come back. Sometimes we'd find severed legs. The bastard made them suffer before finishing the job. Eventually it gets too much, so we organise. We spread out, set traps at places it'll have to go. And then we left 'em, we'd come back later to see. We're grouped in pairs, for safety apparently. I'm stuck with an old war buddy o' mine, good soldier. Fought with him in the ant war. They joked that he was invincible. Well...

So we get back to the web we spun and there it is. Stuck to the web, and prayin' as is their want. We can hear it mumbling away. 'Ho ho', we thinks ' got you now'. So my buddy he goes over to paralyse it so we can take it back and get the reward, but just as he gets close, the thing shoots its forelegs out and grabs him. We're both shocked and I can only look on as he struggles against it, but the spikes hold him in place. The bastard's neck bends at odd angles and it reaches round and snips off a leg with its jaw, and then another. My buddy's leading with it, begging it to let him live, but the only response is another leg bitten off. Maybe I could have done something, I don't know, maybe I should have, but I was so scared. So I runs, and as I do, I hear my friend stop struggling, and that infernal praying begins again.

Coconut Crabs would make awesome "who's side is that bastard on" creatures.

    I see this layout:
Spider centric, that is, spiders are the generally dominant civilized group. Like the PHB races, to use D&D as an example.
Other arthopods would be the "second class", like centipedes, scorpions, locusts, beetles, crabs, hornets, etc.

Mammals, reptiles, birds, they are the "monsters". I see a post-apocalyptic world where not much bigger than a large dog survives, but that leaves plenty of room for rats, cats, dogs, etc. Figure food shortages have made them all opportunistic feeders, more than willing to go after anything that catches their attention. Fight for survival and all. Depending on setting, perhaps mammals are badly warped/mutated by the apocalypse event.

Coconut crabs could be a sort of "war troll". You see one coming, you hope to the Webspinner that its working for somebody, not just wandering as it pleases.

Many are the dangers a hatchling must face. The fluke and wasp attack their minds, the centipede and mantis tear their bodies. But few match the dragonfly, master of water and air both, worlds no spider truly conquered.

After the demise of the two-legs, as spiders prospered in mind, the insects likewise prospered in body. Hatchlings of this beast easily dwarf an adult orb weaver, equipper with snapping jaws. It isn't limited by mere spider or ant in prey, its jaws tear anything from fish to frog to unlucky mice straying too close to water. After it devours enough, it finds a tough blade of grass and climbs.

This, hatchlings, is the only stage a dragonfly can -and must- be attacked. Deliver your venom directly into its head segment, and escape with utmost haste. If not killed in its moment of weakness, ah, true terror then begins. Its wings dry, its jaws open and the adult takes wing.

No web can stop the adult dragonfly, for it flies fast enough to rip through them, what it can't cut with its wings it tears with its jaws. Any moving creature is prey to it. It destroys our webs and eats every egg, every hatchling. Every adult not fast enough to find cover. It has no mercy, no compassion, only bestial cunning and eternal hunger.

And this, hatchlings, is why you should run when you hear the wingbeats of the dragonfly.

Came across this in a VTR splatbook...

    >A Daeva performance artist with a penchant for the shocking and the macabre made a ghoul of her favorite pet: a Goliath bird-eating tarantula she calls “Lord Byron.” Normal bird-eating tarantulas grow about 12 inches in diameter (the size of a dinner plate) and can run 25 miles an hour, even up walls or ceilings. Infused with Kindred Vitae, Lord Byron has outgrown such statistics, practically doubling them. The Daeva also uses the spider to hunt. While his venom isn’t enough to kill a human, it causes enough pain and numbness to hamper the movement of human victims.

DUDE. Even ignoring the whole vampire aspect... can you imagine a spider that fucking big? A foot across?! Holy shit.

I heard one guy WAS working on it, but I don't know what happened to him or the project.

The whole thing revolved around playing as an insect of some kind that fit a certain class, and was mainly based off of D&D, though I can't recall if it was 3.5 or 4E. There were things like going into an ant's nest to exterminate the queen, then having the DM pull some kind of "Rock Fall" shit by pulling in a human child, only to have a dreaded Babysitter show up and mulch the party.

    Shit was so cash.

Dude... tarantulas ARE spiders. and the Goliath spider really IS a foot in diameter and can eat birds.

If spiders are regular people, the Goliath tarantula is the motherfucking Hulk.

I shall, I shall, and not keep silent, for a hundred strings still send luscious vibrations through my head-web. Much crawling goodness we caught with cunning snares, but still they hang listlessly about. A shape we need, a pattern to construct, for strings without a structure are but balls of yarn. Much silk we have yet to spin, so let us not tarry with much cheliceral chatter, but bite deep into the struggling snacks. 3.5 it be then, so let us see with shining eyes what may unfold for us, the teeming multitude, the singing swarm, the cluster-nodes of flesh and lightning.
Let us commence with basic steps and skimper along from where it goes. While 3.5 is simple enough to build upon, what aspect could prove most advantageous, what class most constructive? The Geomancer, I jitter with diceless delight, for many a pleasure derives from constructive freedom, so let us assemble a way to provide for base classes while still allowing for customization of character.

I just think that there's such a variety in the number of spiders out there that making a party consisting entirely of different sorts of spiders (the jumping spider rogue, the goliath tarantula warrior and the wolf spider ranger) makes a bit more sense than having a bunch of cross-species relations.

To be honest, I think something like BRP would be a good choice. It gives a bit more flexibility in making up classes/spider types than DnD does.

Not only does this spider fire webs from its mouth, rather than its abdomen, the webs are POISONED.

So I was just thinking about loremaster spiders. And then I thought about how they'd store their wisdom and history. Initially I thought about little scrolls, but then it hit me:

    History-webs.

Somewhere, a bunch of wise old spiders have begun spinning webs charting the history of the spider people since they became sentient. The ever-increasing need for young students to upkeep webs already spun, and the need for food for the growing population of this spider monastery leads to the founding of the spider’s first town. As new spiders offer to hunt nearby and catch food for the busy loremasters writing the first spider history books, previously individualistic spiders find themselves living and working together as never before.

    >>4735267
Damn, there was a movie or something that I read in which something similar to this happened. So, I was thinking the retrieval and archival is done by connecting or resonating with the webs.

But that as a backstory sounds awesome.

    Possible classes:

    - Simple warrior: uses weaponry such as grass-blades, shroom clubs etc.
    - Scout/Thief: supremely stealthy and master of espionage; maybe heightened/telescopic senses and camouflage tricks (beware the Crab Spider Scout with Predator invisibilty)
    - Lore Master: Keeper of history, accumulator of knowledge; possible prestige class from there might be:
a.) Bioweaver: Able to manipulate DNA, hence able to acquire/absorb other arthropd characteritics like stingers, wings etc.
b.) String Theoretician: able to manipulate probability
c.)Weft Warper: can manipulate the fabric of space-time like small range teleport, speeding up, etc.
    - Serenader: master of vibrations, uses music to influence other creatures
    - Trapmaster: master of hiding and ensnaring his prey, from the smallest of flies to, at higher level, even producing silk so durable not even rats can escape

Also, regarding character creation, it would be good to have one arachnid template and a number of building points from which players can build their respective spider species (enhanced jumping for jumping spiders, huge size/strength for tarantulas, camouflage for crab spiders). As things progress, not only gets the spider character more efficient skill trees due to class, but also an improvement or even new acquisitions from the species traits list.

I was also thinking some kind of alchemist. Now that the spiders have sentience, they can begin to work to neutralise other creature's poisons, as well as enhance their own. Maybe they could start brewing little molotov cocktails.

Excellent idea. I also like how all these different classes are still based upon spider characteristics and extrapolate from there. That way the setting and player options would still be arachnid-specific and not devolving into a generic "D&D, but with insects instead of people"-debacle.

    Another class could be:

Neuroweaver: Basically a mentalist, this class makes the spider in question a master in reading, influencing and possibly even controlling other creatures, going so far as even breaking the feeble minds of clearly inferior mammals by a combination of hypnosis, persuasion and sheer force of will

I'm beginning to think of this like World of Darkness, only with insects. So you'd have campaigns mainly based around the big races, ants, spiders, bees and so on, while also having a world full of a bunch of other creatures like in those two threads.

    >>4736048

Spiders would become the Mages of the setting through the "magical" abilities >>4735717 suggested, as well as their mastery of Webs. The Event that destroyed humanity and granted bugs sentience somehow gave spiders the ability to tap into some deeper understanding.

Well, yes or no. I'd make that dependent on the class which fraction of the WoD you'd be playing at. The Lore Masters and the resulting prestige classes would be the Mages, the Warriors would be the Werewolves, the Serenaders could be a bit like the Vampires etc.
Seeing how real world spiders have adapted themselves to nearly every environment, limiting the WoS (World of Spiders and/or Survival) to just one focus would be to deny ourselves the superb potential the whole setting has.

    Also, new class:

The Digester: Having heightened the potential his digestive enzymes offer, the Digester is not only able to use his spit as a weapon, leaving steaming carcasses of liquefied flesh in his wake, but also derive special short-term benefits depending on the prey he just slurped up. Also, his ability to derive sustenance from organic matter increases dramatically.

Why not? We're pretty much talking about raceclasses with the different spider species, and that's something World of Darkness does relatively well.
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)17:01 No.4736424
    >>4736378

I was thinking more on a larger scale, for the people who wanted to play things other than spiders. There'd be classes and subraces for ants, and for bees and so on.

Ah, I understand. Yes, of course, the WoS(urvival) could feature many different playable species. However, I still think simply reducing any playable arachnid/insectile race to simply just *one* major role would not do the sheer diversity you see in the different biological families justice. True, a lot of spiders focus on their web-shaping ability IRL and thus could be viewed as generally being able to have superior abilities in all things web-related, but then there are also those spiders who do not trap, but actively hunt their prey, so that their focus would not rely on weaving but more on athletic skills.
Of course, you'd still have a lot of overlap then as the clear divides you see in the WoD would get hazy, but I don't really see that as a problem but instead as a great potential, the same way skill-based RPGs offer more variety than most class-based systems do.
Something between GURPS and D&D would be optimal, I think, so I'm kinda leaning toward a D20 Modern-ish system.

I really want this to go away from "magic" and "molotov cocktails". More realistic abilities and fighting. We could easily do this with current real life insects, just with intelligence. No need for radioactive mutant thinking spiders that build cities.

I'm also in favour of cross species parties, although only if doing so is in the spider's favour. Like a grasshopper can tag along and as long as he proves useful, is not eaten. I mean, most spiders are predatory and cannibals as is.
    >> Anonymous 06/01/09(Mon)17:25 No.4736682
    >>4736607

I'm inclined to agree with you about magic. It's probably a bit unnecessary. And I suppose cross-species parties and mono-species parties are just a case of justifying it.

Tastes will always be different, so to maximize the potential fanbase, I'd say we come up with all we can think of and compose a basic system that can be suited to all tastes: Want to have a more realistic setting? Only use the basic arachnid build, the building points for the species traits and maybe someskills to make up your character. Want to have a more exotic setting? Use the basic stuff as well as the advanced options of classes their special abilities.
Let's not limit ourselves here, fellow arachnerds.

Most excellent. I am glad we could come to an agreement. Really, I see no reason why any RPGing athropod-/arachnerd should be left out of this delightful endeavour as we should not concentrate on what divides us, but what unifies us, and that is RPGing and Arthropodding.
As such, I'd venture that we should concentrate on what system to use and how to come up with a good building points system that allows for maximum customisability.
It'd be great if *everyone* in on this left satisfied, with a flexible system that makes it possible that everyone interested can game it, no matter what their unique vision might be.
Our tree is large, so everyone can have their slice of the communal web.
