111 KB Awesome Mashup campaigns Anonymous 07/19/09(Sun)10:48 No.5201737
So, for while no my group and I have been thinking about doing a giant robot campaign vaugly inspired by "Shinji and 40k". As in, Evangelian style monster fightan with less psudo-psycho bullshit and more chain weapons. We even decided to do it in a slightly modified form of Dark Heresy (with multiple battle phases. First you fight as the main PCs in the giant robots and the GM takes notes of specific things that happen during the battle, and then you play as disposable mooks on the ground evacuating people, putting out fires and other emergency stuff while the battle is going on. God help your mooks if your giant robot decided to flamethrower a street during the battle...)

Anyway, at first our pilots were going to be fairly standard for a NGE campaign, but then one of the players found the attached picture and the entire group is taking it to heart. I haven't decided if this is "all is lost" or "made of win" yet. Time will tell.

Anyway, /tg/. Tell me about your own awesome mashup campaigns, or just mashups you think would be damn cool to see.
    >> Anonymous 07/19/09(Sun)10:54 No.5201776
Well, my current campaign is pretty much a mashup of *everything*, literally. The point of it is that it's a huge multiversal Planescape-lookalike with the players travelling between different fiction universes trying to find the reason why said universes are starting to collapse onto each other.

I call it Clusterfuck in Infinite Worlds.

This could either be horrible or immense fun. May I ask (with caution, as people tend to get pissy) what system thou art using?

I once ran a campaign where all of the players had to choose a character from popular culture (movies, videogames, ect) and play as a level 10 equivalent of them, and I would choose a pan-dimensional threat for them to face once I knew what the party was capable of.

I ended up with a team up of Gordon Freeman, The Master Chief, The 10th Doctor... and Luigi Mario?

Well, after the Doctor was decided on, there was really only one choice:

They fought Necrons inside a Dyson sphere that was breaching and invading multiple universes to collect untouchables on a scale never before seen.

The party defeated them by hijacking their portals and turning all of them into gates to the center of galaxies, causing the Dyson Sphere to be ripped apart by multiple supermassive black holes. The guy who roleplayed the Doctor was pretty good at it.

Mutants&Masterminds. It was either that or GURPS, and my current players were more used to d20.

The one who is playing the Haruhi-expy WILL end up in control of Third Impact, that much is a given. The Kyon one will probably have to talk her out of it.

Also... DH? Really? I realize that the PCs are in giant robots, but that seems a bit brutal a system for any campaign where your want the main characters to see the end of it.

Best mashup? Sailor Moon meets Doom. Shit was so awesome.

    >>5201804

It was. Gordon freeman had, like, 2 weapons that were actually effective against Necrons (the alternate fire on the Combine overwatch gun and Gravity gun after the Doctor sonic screwdrivered the fuck out of it).

The Master chief was, unsurprisingly, a bit overpowered, but without him they would have died. Alot.

The Doctor couldn't really kill Necrons, but he could fuck up their abilities to no end ("And just give me a sec to collapse the quantum waveform of the dimensional extrapolator that Wraith is using... done! No more phasing for you!") and was essential to saving the day in the end.

Luigi Mario. God damn, fucking Luigi Mario. He kicked SO MUCH ASS. He was the only one with magic, which the Necorns certainly were no expecting. And that one time he found a Star... it was a bloodbath.

I ran a mass crossover once using BESM (inb4weaboo) just because it was the only universal system I was familiar with. Highlights include:

-Werewolf types in the flaw sequence from Freakazoid! and not only turns into a freakazoid, but also winds up in Reboot.

-Warcraft Orc gets possessed by the Venom symbiote. Calls itself "Horde".

-Saxaphone-playing minotaur killed by swarm of angry bees.

The Evas take the crippling damage, but in most cases the Pilot's entry plug will eject after a certain amount of critical damage. You know, how it was designed to work on the show and then it NEVER FUCKING WORKED EXCEPT FOR THE ONE TIME THEY DIDN'T WANT IT TO AND IT ALMOST KILLED THE PILOT.

Also, to extend the battles we are giving each body part it's own wound pool, so you can lose the arm without dying like a bitch.

Still working on the AT field mechanics, though.

So I'm reading this thread, and I see the first two pictures on my screen at the same time. And it hits me in the face like a brick:

Haruhi would be THE best companion ever for the 10th Doctor. Seriously. She would enjoy the ever loving FUCK out of it, and her reality warping would make the Doctors plot armor even stronger. And given their personalities, they would probably just end up running everywhere. So much fucking running.

It would never work as a campaign, though. But it would be awesome.

Not quite Awesome Mashup, but a game I was in with a perfectly pitched powercreep through the campaign had an NPC introduced ~2/3 of th way through who let us have (GM permitting, more permitted as time went on) fictional items pulled out of books. The rules were that it had to come from a book - in a pinch we could use a digital copy on a screen, but it hurt the person doing it - and thus had to be able to be pulled out of the book. Massive, or heavy, and it wouldn't come.

Things we took out included Shields from Dune, Fast Penta (unsure on spelling, truth drug), lightsabers. The NPC who did this became quite attached to a sword we think was either Excalibur or the other sword that Arthur had.

And, of course, the Doctor would know he had to take her along and keep her interested, and that eventually she'd become bored, and that would be a Bad Time. Probably he'd be grooming her for a heroic sacrifice, because existence itself it not meant to have a personality. By sacrificing its _sentience_ for the good of all, the universe would once again lapse into a period of unconscious normality, going along as it should, rather than being centred around an individual being with all the chaos that means would happen. And the tenth doctor is good at "Tragic, but it had to happen." He does that expression quite well.

This would imply the possibility of Captain Jack Harness and Haruhi being in the same room. Given Jack's traditional greeting, we would be forced to add "Pedophile" to the list of things that Jack is. Although, he's already an Omniphile, so it would probably be redundant.
    >> Anonymous 07/19/09(Sun)11:47 No.5202085
Not a game I played in, but an aquaintence did.
BESM system. Players were all super-weeaboos.
The campaign took them through different anime worlds (sorta like how Kingdom Hearts worked, but no control over where they went).
The characters were the players, basically. Whenever they ended up in one world, they could learn an ability or keep an item/weapon from that universe.
Example: The group had been through Naruto, Death Note, and Mega Man. He kept Shadow Clones, Shinigami Eyes, and a Mega Buster. Another became a vampire in Hellsing, one got a Gundam he could warp in for a limited time per day, and another had Ranma's shapeshifting issues (randomly rolled, he got a rat).
Was a pretty cool idea, but you know how weeaboos are when they gather.

From what I understand, they did well.
Main issue of the campaign was they were following something that was trying to steal as many powers as it could, unite the 'verses, and rule over all. It tried to get a Death Note, but they eventually cornered the villain (since, while in a particular 'verse, you had to follow its rules on realism. i.e. You get shot in Death Note, you die, while in Devil May Cry it just hurts). The person who actually got the Death Note (a new one stolen from the Shinigami King) decided to burn it instead of keep it, so the King gave him the eyes for free.
Not a bad chapter, TBH. I think they caught him by breaking into one of the BBEG's cronie's house and listening to a conversation on when to meet (The Ranma-rat guy helped a LOT with his stealth abilities).

Judging by the reactions to a post I can't see, my newly-installed Greasemonkey script is working.

Haruhi Suzumiya peered around the TARDIS doors at the Doctor's disappearing back. She'd been aboard and avoiding detection for six hours now, containing her excitement was becoming harder. Now that Doctor Smith, as he'd called himself was leaving, she could have a decent look around without ducking out of sight ev- Wait, was it light outside?
She was certain she'd walked inside this magic box at two in the morning after following the mysterious supply teacher, Doctor Smith back from her home to school. Whatever it was, he wasn't a normal human - most likely an alien, or an esper, or a time traveller, or maybe even all three! She'd really struck gold here. She'd examine it the next day during lunchbreak, and of course she'd drag Kyon along as a makeshift trap-finder, but until then she had to go it alone.
Except, it might already *be* lunchbreak, judging by the light she'd seen streaming through the door as the Doctor had left. Maybe she should check?

Edging the door open, she realised she was no longer in the supply cupboard next to the clubroom where Doctor Smith's Box had been when she entered. Nor was she in Kansas. Unfortunately, she didn't recognise Cardiff when she saw it, so our heroine was unaware of where she was, and of the imminent danger to her honour.

"Hello, and who might you be? New travelling companion? I thought the Doctor was going through one of his moody 'I-dont-want-company' phases."

Actually, it's pretty clear that the only reason he posted at all was to put his "face" into this thread, and reinforce the weeaboo persona he's created for himself.
His post was a troll post, intended only to draw out the anons that hate him.
It is unfortunate that a genuine thread was caught in this faggotry, but such is the nature of war.
Normally, I would sage at this point. However, I am going to forgo that as this is, as you said, a pretty cool thread.

    Back to the original topic...

One of the big criticisms against D&D 4e is Martial class encounter and daily powers. People claim that they aren't "realistic" (ha, news flash, it's D&D, it's not supposed to be realistic in the slightest! :3) and that they break immersion.

So, what if we took D&D 4e's basic mechanics and mashed it up with the Shim Megami Tensei: Persona series? No more power sources, now everything's based on major arcana. No longer do you choose base classes, multiclass combos, and hybrid multiclasses, you instead assemble your character's persona based on what's available to you within your arcana. This allows an easy explanation for "martial" encounter/daily manoeuvres: When you use a power, you're actually summoning your persona to do it, and some of your persona's abilities are limited like that.

    Indeed.

So, in a Haruhi/ Doctor Teamup...what happens to the SOS Brigade? Haruhi probably wouldn't commit to a long term trip without bring Kyon along. The Doctor would probably recognize Yuki as a data-integration entity... thing with a little time, and Mikuru is almost certainly a time agent like Captain Jack used to be...

Wait. Isn't is a major plot point in the Haruhiverse that No one can time travel past the "3 years ago" incident? That would get the Doctor's attention something FIERCE.

They get left behind. They would only be a drag on the ridiculous amount of energy that would exist in the Doctor/Haruhi relationship.

Kyon might get dragged along simply so there is the requisite amount of Deadpan Snarkary to act as Haruhi's foil. And because Haruhi will shape the universe so he has no choice but to come.

Yeah, I'd be inclined to agree that Kyon would get dragged along somehow.

Might be a decent interactional triangle there: The Doctor has a pretty good idea of what's possible, Haruhi runs with the stuff going overboard(possibly changing reality at points) and Kyon's there to be somewhat annoyed and the 'voice of reason'...

... Though honestly I don't know the Tenth Doctor too well.

"C'mon Kyon! Don't drag your feet!"
    "Couldn't we do this later?"
"No way. This kind of mysterious happening is exactly why I founded the SOS Brigade!"
She opened the door. Haruhi pointed at the blue box with "Police" written in English on it. Kyon sighed.
"Isn't this the film club? It's probably just a prop."
    "It wasn't there yesterday evening!"
"So they brought it here today."
"I would have noticed that. I was here."
"The entire morning?" Then Kyon understood: the dirt on her clothes, the camera... "Were you looking for UFOs? I thought you stopped doing that."
"Expect the unexpected! I had a feeling something would turn up. And I was right, see?!"
"It's a wooden box. Aren't alien ships supposed to be shaped as saucers?"
"Don't be silly. This is perfect camoflage!"
"... As a blue box with Police written on it?"
"Don't be stupid Kyon. You don't believe it's a UFO, now do you. It's probably got fold or dimension technology too, so it's bigger on the inside!"
Haruhi was visibly agitated as she started messing around with the door.

    "Hm, the door won't open."
    "It's probably a solid box, isn't it?"
"No, I felt a reaction. Let's try these."
"Why are you carrying around a set of lockpicks?"
"You never know when you might need them. Like if you're imprisoned by sasquatches. I'd just use my ID card but it's not good with padlocks."
    "Sasquatch jails have padlocks?"
    "Sssh! Watch the door."
Haruhi started fiddling with the lock. As Kyon stood guard he couldn't help but wonder how he managed to get roped into this kind of thing again. Well, at least it wasn't anything serious this time, like time travelling kidnappers or alien assassins. Maybe if Haruhi had her way she'd be more cheerful for a while.

    Suddenly, he heard footsteps approaching.
    "Haruhi, someone's coming. Let's hide!"
"Almost... There!" the lock clicked open and they ducked into the box.

The Doctor entered the room. Funny, he was sure he'd find the source of the disturbance somewhere, but this place had been quiet. No strange deaths, alien invasions or anything. In fact, that in itself was rather irregular. Well, he'd have to check the instruments of the TARDIS and see if they could find anything. Huh, that's funny, he thought, did I leave the door unlocked?

    Okay.

    Persona 3 adaptation:

Characters choose a martial class, any martial class.
They make the characters as normal, except they only get to choose at will powers.

Personas: Every character starts with a level 1 persona. This initial persona has their initial encounter and daily powers.
Each persona is tied to a mental ability (cha, wis, int) of the player, and they use this ability, and not the one listed in the power description, that is used in place of all others.
The first persona is tied to the highest mental ability

Ex: a player, let's call him FAGGY, makes a character named WEABOO McFAG-SAN. His class is fighter. He makes the character as normal, and chooses cleave and sure strike as his at wills. His persona, let's call him Heracles, is tied to his highest attribute, in this case, wisdom. Heracles comes with passing attack as an encounter power, and Brute strike as a daily.
These powers work as normal, but they use wisdom in place of the powers primary and secondary abilities.

Whenever the character gains a new power, he gains a new persona, and his old personas gain 1 level. The new persona chooses its mental ability randomly, and it's class is also chosen at random. Any class is allowed. Once you randomly determine ability and class, the player then chooses the power he wants.

Ex: Weaboo MacFag-SAN is now level 2. The DM randomly rolls, resulting in the new persona, let's call him Orpheus, being a wizard, and tied to charisma. So, now, the player, FAGGY, gets to choose a wizard level 2 utility power. Also, Heracles is now level 2.

A persona level is added to the pc's ability that the persona is tied to, as long as that persona is equipped.

Ex: meaning that Weaboo MacFag-SAN now has +2 to wisdom, as long as he is using Heracles. When equipping Orpheus, he gains instead +1 to charisma.
    >> Anonymous 07/19/09(Sun)14:33 No.5203273
    >>5203202

Equiping Personas: Every character starts a battle with no Persona equipped, and must spend a minor action to draw the evoker (a fake pistol) and a standard action to shoot himself in the head with it. (Bonus points if the player uses a real gun to mimic the action in real life, preferably with real bullets). Once that persona is equipped, the player can use its powers.
Every time a persona is equipped, the player loses 1 healing surge due to the mental stress of shooting himself on the head.

Merging Personas: If a character happens to get a new persona of the same class and tied to the same ability as another he already has, he can choose to merge them. When merging a persona, the two personas are destroyed and a new one is reborn in its place. This new persona has all the powers of the originals, and the highest level between the two.

Ex: Weaboo MacFag-SAN is now level 3. The DM randomly rolls, and the result is that the new persona, let's call him Perseus is a fighter tied to wisdom. FAGGY, chooses to merge Perseus and Heracles, who are both fighters tied to wisdom. The resulting persona, let's call him BOB JONHSON, has all the powers of the two, (Passing attack, Brute strike, and a third level one), and is level 3. The other remaning persona, Orpheus, is now level 2.

Also, the last power the characters receives (at level 29) is ALWAYS based on the character class, and automatically merges with all the personas of the same class, including the ones that are not tied to the same ability.
    .
    ..
    ...
And that's basically it. I could do something about Social links, but that'd be too complicated.

    Would you believe I'm stuck?

    ... 'cuz that's a half-truth.

Thinking here, I imagine the Fourth and Tenth Doctors would work best for this stuff. First would be too much of a viewing her as a lab-object and be sort of rude I think... Second I know little of... Third is stuck on Earth if I recall, which spoils some of the crazy fun. Fifth would work in a wonky sort of way, of course, though he'd be more gentlemanly and the chemistry would be odd... Sixth is kind of nuts and doesn't feel like he'd have the right chemistry. Seventh is way too just-as-planned to get the right hijinx (the latter half at least). Eighth is too undeveloped. Ninth is kind of generally bitter I feel...
Tenth and Fourth are whackier, though Tenth is more popular these days (if nothing else due to sheer exposure). Fourth is more "adventurous know-it-all" I guess? Bit unsure of the exact stuff here.

So I'm thinking Tenth, but I'm pretty sure he'd be a bit not-like-tenth given my knowledge of him.

Take your time. Its a great idea, and it will be a great idea a week from now. Oh, also:

    http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5031867&postcount=24

Is a good piece of writefaggotry with the 10th doctor in it, just to help capture his "feel". A bit whimsical and seemingly mad, but very smart and makes heavy use of distracting dialog while he gets himself in position to SCIENCE! the problem.

Also: in any given situation there is a 50/50 chance that he knows what is REALLY going on, but chooses to play dumb until the right moment.

Ah yes, that one. I think I've got a general idea. Thanks heaps.

... I think 4th and 10th are pretty similar for some reason, though not exactly the same. Maybe that's just me. Really need to watch more of the new show.

Anyway, I do like the concept and I could use the fictional writing training. Might be back in a week, or later tonight. Unsure at the moment.

Sorry if you have already gone to bed, and doubly sorry for the fact that it is incomplete. I haven't writefagged in a while, and that pent up writing kind of came out all at once, so it looks like this will take a while to tell. Here's the first part for your reading pleasure, though:

“Don’t worry about it.” Mario had said. “I’ll handle it after I rescue the Princess.” He said.
Luigi wished he had been more convincing. He also wished he wasn’t dodging green lightning being shot by metal skeletons. And he wished in general for the days when being a plumber involved more fixing pipes, and less adventure.
In short, Luigi Mario wished for a lot of things. None of them ever came true.
Luigi dove for the safety of a nearby pipe, praying that it didn’t contain a man-eating plant. It didn’t. Good luck so far.
With a soft thump he fell out of the bottom of the pipe, finding himself in the familiar, blue brickwork of the underground levels of the Mushroom Kingdom. What was in it was anything but familiar.
A swirling whirlpool of green light stood upright in the middle of the chamber, arcs of similarly colored lightning lancing out at odd intervals to glance the surface of the nearby floor and walls. It didn’t seem to do any harm, but it certainly lent an aura of menace to the portal.

    >>5206147

Luigi Picked himself up and dusted off, checking his pockets to make sure he hadn’t lost anything. Nope, he still had a pair of mushrooms and fire flowers each, and a leaf as well. Good.
Before he could make his next move, however, there was a thunderous *CRACK*, as if something had hit a wall at very high speeds. Barely a moment later, the air filled with a low, shrill grinding noise, with the faint hint of an electronic warble in the background.
Between him and the portal, Luigi saw… Something fade into view. One moment he could see only the barest outline, the next it was as real as the ground he stood on. A large, wooden box, much more in touch with its blue brickwork surroundings than the swirling green that it obstructed. Luigi warily approached it and prodded it with his finger. It was real, alright.
Luigi hear the creak of a wooden door and footsteps. “Again?” The voice was exasperated, and tinged with an accent that Luigi didn’t recognize.
Luigi peeked around the corner of the box. There was a tall, thin man wearing a large coat and what appeared to be bright red shoes. There was a faint whistling noise coming from somewhere, but Luigi couldn’t identify it. For someone who spent most of their days in the sewer levels, today was full of surprises.
The Man in the coat suddenly spun around and smiled. “Hello.” He said cheerfully. “Do you know where I am?”
    Luigi nodded.
“Well, speak up then, we don’t have long. I may have missed whatever pocket dimension they are hiding themselves in, but I bet they felt that. I know I did.” What the man said next was garbled as he walked into the Blue box, his voice taking on an ominous echo.
Luigi moved to the front of the blue box. His jaw dropped. The door was open and what he saw was… impossible. It was bigger on the inside, and filled with things he couldn’t even find the words to describe.
    >> Anonymous 07/19/09(Sun)20:34 No.5206181
    >>5206171

The man in the coat walked back, a small tan cube in his hand. “Yeah, everyone tends to have that response.” He said. Luigi quickly closed his mouth. “Listen, can you take this and stand on the other side of that event horizon? I have-”
There was a crackle and flash of green light from behind Luigi. Wincing, he peeked over his shoulder.
There were eight of the metal skeletons behind him now.
“-notimeforplanA. Plan B!” The Man chucked the cube over the heads of the skeletal machines, which vanished with a crackled as it struck the green vortex.
The mechanical warriors raised the long, metal and glass contraptions they all carried and aimed. The world suddenly fell upwards and to the side as Luigi found himself pulled into the impossibly spacious interior of the blue box, and the door slammed shut. Luigi heard only the faintest whips as outside bolts of matter destroying lightning collided with the exterior of a vessel which, simply speaking, couldn’t care less.
The man in the coat quickly turned the deadbolt on the door and sighed in relief. “There we go, safe forever.” He pronounced the final ‘r’ with an enthusiastic ‘h’ sound.
Luigi crawled to his feet. “I’ma Luigi. Luigi Mario. Who are you?” He asked.
The man cracked a grin that he had grinned a hundred thousand times. “I’m the Doctor” He said, “And with just a little bit of luck…” there was a beep from somewhere in the impossible room. The doctor ran over to the round terminal that dominated the room. “Great! Grand! Off we go, then!”
The room was filled with that shrill grinding Luigi had heard before, as the column in the middle of the room appeared to move up and down. Like most of Luigi’s life, what was happening was unknown and vaguely threatening.

It felt like his body was on fire, but it was no worse then what he went through every time we wore his suit through cryo-stasis. He hit the ground on the other side of the alien portal and immediately rolled to the side, raising the plasma rifle in his hands and taking stock of the situation he now found himself in.
“Where are we?” If his helmet had been off, and someone had been close enough to hear him, it would be natural to assume he was talking to himself.
“I’m trying to figure that out now.” Normally having a voice in your head is a sign of insanity. For Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, it was a sign of something much less worrisome and rather more expensive: Cortana, a ‘smart’ AI construct.
John took in his surroundings. No hostiles were within his sight range, but his field of vision was hardly empty. Black, monolithic structures jutted from the ground. Largely angular and geometric in design, the repetition of the same forms was broken up by the occasional dominating pyramid-like structure.
John looked up. The word “dominating” ceased to apply to the pyramids, and was now solely reserved for the huge sphere above him. There was no horizon, the edges of the world simply bent upward and joined, the far reaches of it hidden by distance and haze. By the sky was not empty. A huge, perfect sphere filled it, hanging impossibly in place. Even the Halo stations, massive as they were, were dwarfed by the sheer size of it.

“Without a sky to analyze for star-chart comparison, I can’t tell you where we are. But I can tell you what we are in. Given the size of the construct, we appear to be in a Dyson Sphere.” The AI’s false-female voice explained.
John was interrupted before he could speak. “I know that you don’t know what that is. It doesn’t have a military application, so you wouldn’t have heard of it. Simply put, it’s a shell built around a star, made to capture all the energy it throws out and use it as a power source. The power supplied is more then you could ever imagine, but constructing a Dyson Sphere should be impossible. The material requirements alone would be more than could be harvested if you strip mined most solar systems. The architecture doesn’t match that of the structures on Halo. We could be looking at-” Cortana paused. “Chief, we have to get moving. I am detecting a sudden energy spike not unlike the portal we just used. Something is coming.”
John leapt to his feet and made a break for the nearest building-sized structure to use as cover. Even with his superhuman speed, he didn’t have time to reach it before he heard a rasping fizzle behind him.
    “One new contact. It’s human.”
John turned and dropped to one knee, aiming the looted Covenant weapon at the sudden arrival.
The man was on his hands and knees, most of his body covered with a suit unlike any that John had ever seen. It couldn’t have possibly been designed for combat. Only an idiot would paint armor such a vivid shade of orange. The arrival simply sat there for a few moments, still unaware or unconcerned with the Chief’s presence. Without warning he let out an angry, anguished roar and slammed his fist into the ground.

His frustration apparently vented, he stood and composed himself with a sigh, pushing his thick rimmed glasses back up his face, which seemed to be set into a permanent frown. He looked in need of a shave, although the reddish-brown goatee looked as if it belonged there.
“Identify yourself.” John called. The goateed man seemed to notice him for the first time. The change in stance was subtle, but John noticed it. This man was a fighter. His form was sloppy, but that only meant he lacked formal training.
The goateed man reached behind him, and John readied himself for a fight. When the hand came back into view, it held a crowbar. John should have found such a weapon ridiculous. The look on the man’s face made the gesture anything but.
“Gordon. Freeman.” It was a statement. He was clearly expecting some sort of reaction. Whatever effect it was meant to have was lost on John, however.
Every nerve in John’s body screamed that this was going to turn ugly, but he refused to shoot before this Gordon Freeman made the first move. He could see Gordon tighten his grip on the crowbar slightly. This was it…
With a *pop* a metal cube came into being a few feet off the ground and feel with a satisfying clang.
The absurdity of it caught John of guard, and Freeman seemed to be distracted by it as well. Freeman looked up as if to as “Do *you* know what that is?”
A shill grinding noise filled the air, and a tall, blue wooden box faded into view.
“Sorry for the lack of warning, chief, but I’m still not detecting anything. As far as the data I’m getting is concerned, it’s not there.”
    The grinding stopped.
“*Now* I can see it. Whatever that thing is, it is much more advanced than the technology that brought us here, and possibly more advanced than the Halo station’s themselves. Prepare yourself.”

There was the sound of a door unlocking and opening, and a cheerfully smiling man stepped out dressed in a large coat and blue suit, which clashed with his red shoes.
“Ah, there we are then!” The man bent over and picked up the metal cube. “You are *such* a good cube. You are a *useful* cube, you are. I should use you more often.”
A short, mustached man in green overalls stepped out of the box behind him. It occurred to John that it would have been rather cramped in there for two people.
“Oh hello now!” The man exclaimed, absent mindedly tossing the cube over his shoulder into the box. “A Dyson Sphere. I bet somebody is proud of themselves.” He raised his voice and looked around, ignoring John and Gordon. “I hope you have a permit for this.”
“Identify yourself.” John called again. He couldn’t help but feel that the situation was rapidly falling out of his control.
The man in the coat looked him up and down. He pulled out a small wallet of some kind. “John Smith, I’m from Command.” Sure enough, the wallet displayed the identification of a USMC officer. It took every bone in his body for John to resist saluting. “Glad to see you’ve made it this far. What have you learned?”
“John, don’t tell him anything. I don’t know what just happened, but that paper is blank.”
    “Are you sure?” he whispered.
“Positive. The information I’m getting from your eyes does NOT match what I’m getting from the HUD recorder.”
“No tricks.” John called out. If anything, John Smith smiled even wider.
“Oh, you’re clever, aren’t you? No bit of paper’s going to win you over. I’m The Doctor. Just ‘The Doctor’.”
“Chief! Incoming contacts.” Cortana yelled into his brain.

The air began to glow ever so slightly. “Well that didn’t take long.” The Doctor said, whipping out what might have been a small flashlight or a large novelty pen.
With a crackle, four of the alien machines sprung out of space itself, forming a loose ring around the blue box. Across this suddenly cluttered battlefield, John saw a look in Gordon’s eyes that told him that whatever hostility they had shared before was officially shelved.
For better or for worse, they were working together on this one.

    -------------------------

Which is all I wrote before I broke for supper. I should have more for you in the next day or two, and hopefully this thread gets archived for you.

I know you were probably expecting the whole thing, but I can only hope that this more in depth form will make up for it, even if it does take a while to get done.

Now that its all set up, things should go quicker.

    Minor grammatical hiccups.

Also, Mario and Luigi don't really have last names. That's some retarded bullshit the cartoon and/or movie invented, and both of them are horrible.
