Although it's still quite heroic. I kind of like the version of Lovecraft where the human race isn't in any (immediate) danger as a whole, but the investigators' curious nature inevitably takes them outside the warm circle of firelight that is our everyday world of reason and sanity, and into the darkness beyond. See these quotes:

"If the thing did happen, then man must be prepared to accept notions of the cosmos, and of his own place in the seething vortex of time, whose merest mention is paralysing. Maybe, maybe not even that - you're not saving the world, you're not dooming it. When you get eaten by a shoggoth, the world will go on without you.

There's a big element of escapism in Lovecraft's writings, a desire to leave the mundane world behind and wander among enchanted groves and sinister catacombs - the dreamlands stories are the 'light' side of his escapist fantasies. So to some extent the stories are about dreamers and misfits seeking out the strange, the eerie, and the forbidden, for aesthetic reasons or plain curiousity as much as anything else.

'The Hound' is a good example of this (although not a great story) and there's a Drive in Trail of Cthulhu which corresponds to the 'epicure of the terrible'.

Yeah. I hear tell that his relationship (and that of the rest of the crew) with Nickelodeon was nothing but drama because IZ wasn't 'kid friendly' enough. (That is, the crew focused too much on actually making it entertaining instead of loading it up with moralistic pap and bathroom humor.)
