Well, we've all rescued a princess in our time, and that got me thinking.

Would any of you guys ever base a game around, or at least include, one or more of the twisted disney princesses? Or would that ride too close to some sort of grimdark kingdom hearts for most peoples' tastes?

No, not Disney but Brothers Grimm and HC Andersen, yes. In a Dark Post-CyberPunk/SciFi Setting too (SLA Industries).

To be perfectly honest, it sounds exactly like American McGee presents: Kingdom Hearts.

Make it about twisted princesses in general, nix the Disney angle and go for a more Grimm's fairy tales thing.

No, that's more oldschool hardcore, and a different flavor then this stuff. But I do have a healthy respect for all the stuff before Disney got their hands on it. I mean, some adventures coming across sleeping beauty as her rape baby feeding while she still sleeps would be a good, disturbing random encounter.

    >So the story behind Alice is after she's declared guilty, the Queen of Hearts and her army proceed to chase Alice through Wonderland. Unfortunately, Alice trips and hurts her leg, allowing them enough time to catch up to her. Alice is then dragged away by the Queen's soldiers. All of this is being watched by the Cheshire Cat who's hiding in the shadows. Alice is taken to the center of the Queen's garden maze where all the bodies of the many victims of the tyrannical Queen are discarded. And like all of the Queen's victims, Alice is beheaded and left in the center of the maze to rot. Unknown to the Queen, the Cheshire Cat followed her to the center of the maze and witnessed the tragic execution of the young girl. Once the Queen and her army has left, the Cheshire Cat appears. He feels extremely guilty for the death of this little girl...but that feeling soon passes, for the Cheshire Cat now had himself a new toy...a new body to posses...a new puppet to carry out his twisted motives. Wonderland WILL be his!

Ariel sold her soul for youth, power and beauty and she knows it won't last. The only way she can keep going, the only thing that prevents her lungs from shriveling up and killing her is if she can convince a man to give her "True Love's First Kiss"- so she can suck out his soul and ferry it down to her tentacled masters in the crushing black depths.

And then another, and then another, and then another. For eternity.

Well I'd be inclined to have a bunch of normal people from our world sucked into a twisted princess' world so a system that can handle normal humans vs supernatural monsters without the humans getting killed in round 1.

I think it would depend on 'how are the characters getting involved' as to what powers/abilities they have and thus what system.

Personally I'd go WoD with starting characters being mortals with the potential to learn low-level numina (psychic powers, faith, hedge magic etc) as they interact with the supernatural world - enough to make it interesting but not enough to ever overpower what they fight - fights should be about them learning about their foe and outwitting it - not blasting it in the head with hellfire or a shotgun until it goes down.

Nala notices that Simba is in trouble and leaves the hyenas to the other lionesses. She rushes to the top of Pride Rock just in time to see Scar land the finishing blow to Simba. In a fit of rage, Nala attacks Scar viciously, ultimately throwing him off the edge of Pride Rock, avenging Simba's death. However, the hyenas have overwhelmed the other lionesses, leaving Nala as the only surviving lion in the Pride Lands. The hyenas see their chance to finally rid the land of the lions once and for all and begin to pursue Nala without hesitation. With the help of Timon and Pumbaa, the injured Nala makes her escape. The three of them continue to fight the hyenas at every chance they get in order to win back the Pride Lands while preserving the beliefs of Mufasa and Simba.

Disney's body is frozen in stasis, but his subconscious wanders... in his life he sowed so much positive energy (i.e. happyness) that there wasn't enough left for him to continue living in a physical body. So now, his soul tortures people to destroy their positive feelings and return it to him to recover his spirit... or something like that.

Now the question is, how do you get the players involved? You could go the direct way, and have them be the recipients of this torture... or you could put a twist in it.

The players are unknowingly the tools of Disney. They are basically sent into the nightmare world to kill the princesses. They are chosen because they have left their childlike happiness behind, and hence are ideal to shatter dreams... or have a twisted look on the world that twists the images of the story as well.

After purging through some of the worlds, you should sneak in one or two "dreams" in which they get out by "fixing" the world. This should tip them off that maybe harpooning Ariel wasn't the correct choice...

In the end, Disney reawakens. Maybe he is clueless, maybe he has a sudden "What have I done" moment...

Hmm... maybe his little remaining positive energy should be the opposition? As you destroy worlds, it gets stronger, always trying to save the stories...

I'll admit it's trippy. You could replace Disney any number of ways; it could be a fictional author for example.

Or you could use instead a kind of sapient collective imagination thing.Too much had been taken from it and now it wants it back. Actually, the idea that people are too happy right now and they shouldn't be because of some cosmic balance is intriguing... grim dark, but hey, we are grimming and darking up Disney.

What's funny is that making Frollo a good guy would revert him some of the way back to his original characterization. In the novel, he really WAS a great guy, good and kind- with the secret flaw of wanting Esmeralda so much it drove him mad. He was a tragic character, not the out-and-out monster he is in the movie.

And yes, making the villains heroes would be awesome. Evil Mulan fights against the victorious army that killed her- who now protect the populace of China from the Dragon Lady and her pet beast.

The Queen of Hearts is the only source of stability in a land ruled by the Cheshire Cat's mad whimsy.

Snow White's evil stepmother fights a constant battle against zombie dwarves made out of teeth and hatred, the last desperate stand of civilization against the dark and threatening wood.

Maleficent is the only thing between Aurora and the death of all living things.

Villains forced to become heroes because the heroes are so much worse than they ever could be. I love it!

Story: Snow White is a little bit tiffed. Offed by her evil step-mother, Snow White's pure, innocent soul was killed in an excruciating manner- the sort of pain no one should be put through, much less an innocent. Soon thereafter, the Seven Dwarves met their own ends, being fed deadly meals of their own by the Step-Mother, who posed as Snow White with a bit of quick illusion magic.

That's when things went pear-shaped for the Queen. See, Snow White was innocent, and the spirit of the forest- the dark, deep woods- had become fond of her. She loved its animals, loved its paths, and was a sweet, kind thing. She didn't deserve to die.

So, stretching it's powers, the Spirit took Snow White back. It put her in her own body again- but the afterlife leaves marks. Snow White's eyes are gone, replaced by dark pits, effectively blinding her; the things she saw, none living were meant to see, and she can't remember the afterlife at all. It doesn't help matters that the spirit can't actually make her live again, just inhabit her own corpse- effectively, an intelligent zombie.
    >> Anonymous 08/18/09(Tue)18:41 No.5506469
On the other hand, the forest, hunting protectors, also dragged the Dwarves back. While it couldn't do much for their undead flesh, it could make them immune to what killed them- their great snapping teeth and jaws protect them from poisons of any kind.

Furious at her death, and with the forest spirit's help, Snow White has decided to go to war. Capable of calling on the animals, she can also "see" by leashing at least one Dwarf to her side, using their eyes. She also carries the apple that killed her, since she wants to forcefeed the now rotting fruit to her step-mother.

Unfortunately for humanity in general, though, Snow White bears a grudge against her own people, since they left her to die, so she attacks everyone she comes across. The Queen's taken to teaching everyone black magic to survive.

Snow White should have Exalted feats, to mark her out as a hero, while the Queen should have Vile feats, to mark her out as a villain- though those roles have somewhat switched.

What does a Keyblade do? I was under the impression that the Kingdom Hearts enemies were as susceptible to conventional weapons as anything else.

    That said:

So, the Endboss is some form of "Negative Imagination Energy" that has shaped people's imaginations into twisted versions, and is made up of twisted versions of imaginations, and harvests its energy from people.

Its presence alters a world, but subtly, or over a long period of time.

When a Princess is destroyed, and that World's story ends, the Negative Imagination Energy is released and can be used to further subtly and slowly corrupt worlds. Presumably the Positive is absorbed into XP and loot for the players.

The BBEG may be a bastion of Grimification, but he doesn't just throw his shadow over a world. He changes it a little.
Then people's imaginations run wild, and the world becomes a little darker.
Then he changes it a little again.
And people's imaginations make the world become a little darker still.
A little input from him, a LOT of negative energy as a result, waiting for someone to End the story and Release the energy...

The players might think they can fight the Grim-ness by being more paranoid, or thinking outside the box.
    That's what fucks them.
It's the players' own imaginations that subtly change the world they're in for the worse... Think planescape. With more darkness.

The Heartless result from what happens when a person imagines Themself as losing their soul to the grim, dark reality.
A heartless does not so much Kill the people they're targetting (although they are capable of doing so), as make their target receive fear and hopelessness and a negative view of the world around them.
It's not the Heartless that turn you into a monster.
The Heartless merely change the looks of your environment.
The one who turns you into a monster ... is yourself.
And the world becomes a little darker...

A keyblade, then, is a source of uncorruptable positive imagination. The players do not have one, and have to make do with their own limited imagination, and limited diplomacy, and their own bloody genocide of everyone who disagrees, in order to change the consensus of a world back towards good.
Or perhaps, they just destroy it, netting themselves what good is left in the world (quite a bit), but also freeing up all the bad.

Of course, if you imagine a world where Genocide is the assbackwards solution to the world becoming negative, guess what happens?
The world becomes filled with genocide, and that's all kinds of terrible.
You've got to Accen~tuate the positive.
    Elim~inate the negative.
    Latch on~ to the affirmative
And don't mess with mister in-between.

But if you turn the world into a dance number, BBEG just uses a small amount of influence to make people think their jaws are sore, but they have to keep singing for the common good.
And the people think they are slaves, prisoners in their own world to the tyranny of Rhythm and Melody.
And the world gets a little darker...

Everything you do gets Xanatos'd into some type of Bad Imagination end. Hope that the players have enough good imagination in 'em to change the world directly, enough charm to convince others the world isn't such a bad place, and the resolve to cut down anyone being too loud and negative WITHOUT having bad feelings about it.

And then you'll end up having to cut Alice's head off again anyway when she picks up a polearm and charges at your ass. Well done, Hero! You planted a single flower in a square mile of shit.

It calls in the players both because it feeds on their fears and disappointments but also because killing/destroying the princesses is the ultimate bad end, turning that which was good and fair into broken reflections of itself and then having them face an ignoble end?

Personally, I wouldn't go so far as to make the ex-villains heroes per say; they're just the lesser of two evils when compared to the mad princesses.

The Queen of Hearts is still a vicious dictator who would rule the realm with an iron fist... but that's better than the inconceviable tortures that the Cheshire Cat inflicts on anyone he catches.

A choice between a cruel stepmother and being viciously eaten by a pack of undead dwarves isn't much of a choice either, but the characters have to make such compromises in order to survive.

If you give yourself over to the negative, and then DO kill the princess, that world goes bye, and all the negative energy in it gets sent to the BBEG - including your immortal soul, you die.
If you don't give yourself over to the negative, and then DON'T kill the princess, it looks like there's a good chance stuff with somehow end up worse anyway.
If you don't give yourself over to the negative, and then DO kill the princess, the BBEG gets all the negativity that's saved up to that point, and uses it to inspire further negativity.

    How is this winnable?

The players harvest (the remaining) Positive energy from the worlds they destroy, and I guess then they have to corrupt negative stories with positivity.
    The question, then, is:
Does it take more energy to convert Bad to Good, or more energy to convert Good to Bad?
What is stronger, and what does the universe tend towards?
Is this a story about how the universe is Good, and given some creativity, anything can be improved and uplifted faster than the forces of Bad can destroy it?
Or, is this a crapsack story about how Bad has a much easier time of screwing up all of (what's left of) the Good in the universe?
Or is it some kind of story of balance, where nobody ever wins?

    Yeah basically, but with Imagination!
You Imagine horrible torture? You got it, son!
You Imagine the kingdom collapsing under its own weight? Shit yeah, let's roll with that!
You Imagine yourself turning into the monsters you hate? Well god damn john you are the demons, enjoy your demons.

In other words, it becomes a race against the clock. Break worlds as fast as possible as to harvest as much Positive power as possible as to outlevel the BBEG to destroy him. Then release the Positive stored in the PCs to restore the stories.
    >> Anonymous 08/18/09(Tue)19:58 No.5507172
    >>5507137
Add to that, there is of course not enough Positive left to restore the stories back to Disney level, thus the Grimm fairy tales are once more born for Disney to work with...

    History forever repeats.

And then after a few victories you pull an asshole DM trick and put the players in a world that is still unbroken.

Will the players notice in time or will they follow standard procedure and hand The Broken a big victory?

Wrecking worlds levels the PC and the BBEG at the same rate, assuming 50% positive and 50% negative. If your PCs show up on a 100% positive "Not yet crapsack" world and proceed to wreck it, you bet your ass they're going to have moral sliding issues.

I'm thinking the PCs don't represent Absolute Good, so much as they represent Good's ability to adapt, survive and thrive. The PCs have to use their own energy to right a world, while ensuring the BBEG spends a lot MORE energy trying to keep it broken. Or perhaps they just make the world 55% good, 45% bad. In the long run that's a victory.

The players are dropped into a world whose initial situation is Twisted Disney, a world that runs on Imagination, and which is being played on both sides by the PC and the BBEG (assuming the PCs have worked this out yet. Don't tell them.).
The winning move is to fight on worlds and make them a little better, so the PCs gain a slight edge, and it adds up.

See? game is winnable with a bit of metaknowledge that you'll pick up by playing. :-)

Yeah, players don't get XP from slaying helpless princesses, they have to fight for Good, same way whatever their enemies are schemes for Evil.

Maybe that's why Mr. Lich Disney doesn't just go around harvesting World War II novels and H.P. Lovecraft. He can only harvest what he's changed INTO evil. Probably the same for the players - they only get XP for MAKING things good.

Evil's not Zero sum you dumbass. There's evil inherent in people's imaginations and the BBEG just screws things a little in order to bring it forth.

So this is just a race to see who can get the most expression from others' creativity?
This is just a competition to see if others' imaginations produce more Good, or more Bad?

THIS IS SOME DISNEY-ESQUE BULLSHIT ABOUT WHETHER PEOPLE IMAGINE (BELIEVE IN) GOOD, OR WHETHER THEY IMAGINE (BELIEVE IN) BAD?
    GOD DAMN IT.
    YOU TRIED TO GRIMMIFY DISNEY.
YOU MADE THE VERY ESSENCE OF DISNEY.
    YOU SUCK.

So should we try doing stats? I mean, we could totally stat everyone, and give the Princesses a "negativity" stat- the total negative energy of their world.
    >> Anonymous 08/18/09(Tue)21:06 No.5507850
And that the "Positive Energys" are items that had something to do with the story like
    jasmine- the Lamp
    Alice- the rabbit's clock
    Pocahontas- the compass
Mulan- That hair things(I don't know)
    Belle- the rose
    (Need help with the other)
Players must find those relics to fixs the world... my just thinking?

I think there should be something about need to find some catalyst to fix the girls.

    Full list could be:

Alice--Queen's Card Deck: And the PCs must beat her in a game of cards that when she loses, turns into a battle.
Beauty-Petal's of Beast's Rose, which have to be fashioned into a necklace or so and placed upon her.
Cinderella-Fairy Godmother's Wand, which must be used to summon back the FGM, who can perform the ritual to restore Cinderella to normal(but cinderella attacks, so you have to protect her).
Jane-No item here. This should be fixed some otherway
Jasmine-Aladdin is trapped somewhere, you have to free him, get the lamp to him so he can wish Jasmin to normal
Mulan-No item to find, instead you need to lead her to her Ansector's cemtary and purge the connections between the angry spirits and the girl
Pocahontas-Have to find 4 artifacts of her people (arrow of wind, amulet of rock, braiser or fire, chalice of water) and use them to expunge shadow spirits from her
Sleeping Beauty-The needle of the spinnng wheel, which must be used to put her to sleep, then draw out her nightmares and destroy them.
Snow White-Find a pure apple in a field or rot and use it to heal her.
Little Mermaid-Find the shell that held her voice(and now her soul) and return her soul to her.
    >> Mr. Broken Sword 08/18/09(Tue)21:47 No.5508336
Tink & Wendy (Composite boss)- Peter's feather, which, I don't know, thought to think of something
Esmerelda-Quasimoto's Doll, Frolo's Cross, and Her scarf. Figure it also outyour self.
Meg-An amulet which contain's Hercule's soul must be retrived from Hades for her.
Nala-The PCs must reclaim pride rock.
    >> Anonymous 08/18/09(Tue)21:55 No.5508405
Fuck, if you wanted to keep the game going on forever, you could use all of Disney's movies. My personal favorite?

Brave Little Toaster. What normal person wouldn't flip their shit to find themselves in a world with walking, talking, moving appliances?
    >> Anonymous 08/18/09(Tue)22:00 No.5508451
Nightmare Mode: Insert the Emperor's New Groove, the Black Cauldron, the Jungle Book, and Lilo and Stitch into this.

Also, Wall-E and Up. And if you're willing to use the Studio Ghibli movies that Disney has released, My Neighbor Totoro.

Black Cauldron is hard because Disney basically doesn't admit it ever existed and it's nigh impossible to find reference material for the movie version.

It's like the Song of the South, except without any catchy music.
