Eclipse Phase adventure ideas, character portraits, or character ideas.

One of the previous threads is here >>5642930 Mostly just a general discussion.

Any way I'll start us off.

Party is sent out by Firewall to investigate a freighter that has for some reason stop all transmissions. When the reach it they find it is docked at an unregistered habitat filled with morphs that are all identical. They are a singularity cult seeking to use a TITAN artifact to bring them back. It is actually a sealed capsule of inert TITAN nanobots.

A little too cliched for Eclipse Phase. That might as well be a sample adventure for you to run it's so standard.

It is more or less what the idea was. A sample idea to introduce players to the world and what all they might face.

A person was forked without their knowledge. The culprits have programmed the fork to kill the original and take their place, and act as a spy/saboteur.

one of the character's muses/companions is actually a AGI, hiding out from persecution.

A transport full of uplifts have escaped from the jovian junta - but there's no way the habitat could possibly provide for them - people want them gone, and the uplifts will fight to stay.

A famous media star is not content with fame, bio-sculpted looks or tailored pheromones. She releases a memetic virus designed to induce slavish devotion. Naturally, things fo horribly wrong.

The uplift idea could be interesting depends on the uplifts and the habitat though. If it was all of one type or a mix.

the players must play bodyguard for a notorious pornstar. the threats against his life are faked and troubles staged. It's just a new spin on reality tv, and the players are the unwitting stars.

one of the 'lost' who suffered extreme emotional trauma when being sleeved into the futara morph. She is utterly convinced her memories are false and were forcibly implanted/modified. She now wanders, looking for evidence of her 'real life' which never existed.

as a plot hook, the girl attaches herself to a PC or someone/something/some political cause the adventure involves, believing it to be an element from her past.

The players must find a dignitary who will be attending the martian corn harvest festival (or one of his Morphs carrying a Fork).

They must forcibly hack his memory, and implant the following: His parents forcibly sodomized him, several times, with a corn cob Then, they must make sure he gets a backup (or merge, in the case of a fork) prior to giving his speech at the Festival of Corn.

The players are hired to go to a research station, where they've been working on the repopulation problem. Roughly a year ago they Forked the same baby, 100 times, and put the individual baby-Egos into altered gender-specific Cybo-Doll toys fixed with dilated-time sense, given skill programming, in the hope of maturing them into adults in a short time (approximately 5 years) and one day implanting the Egos into living bodies.

Of course, things have gone wrong. The station is currently overrun with hypersmart children. Somehow, they've managed to resleeve themselves into different bots around the station, such as the spider-type maintenence bots and the security reapers used by the staff when they go on-duty. They've begun taking over staff member morphs.

Nobody knows what they do with the staff Egos.

Can be as fun (sugar-rush tachikomas!) or as grimNdark (killer babydolls wearing human skins) as you need for your group..

Recently a series of X-casts have been transmitted from a Brinker hab out in the Oort Cloud. The X-casts depicts the brutal of the hab's population by freakish looking aliens. While some places on the mesh are calling it an elaborate hoax / work of digital art, the higher-ups have decided to send you guys anyway. And they're seemingly scared shitless by the X-casts as they've provided top-of-the-line hardware and morphs for your use during the mission.

Not exactly wizard did it. Your mind has been digitized. Meaning there is a hard copy of it. You can make a copy of it at nearly any time. So if your body dies that backup is downloaded into a new body. Being put into a new body takes about a day or more to get used to the new body. More or less.

Your team egocasts onto Mars to check out rumors of an alleged exsurgent infection that's been popping up in the solar system, but when you come to after resleeving, you notice something wrong.

The walls, the floor, the furniture, everything looks like it was painted with the inside of an octomorph. What's stranger, and perhaps more unsettling, is that the mesh is dead. Your muses run search after search, but they can't find any activity on the mesh since you left the last hab. All the equipment is still online and active, but you're the only ones on the network. No people, no uplifts, no synths, not even a god damned infomorph.

After a while, something enters the room all of you are located in. It can really only be described by one word: hideous. Everything about it offends your senses, as though it were designed to be a cruel mockery of everything transhuman. Suddenly it starts howling at the top of its lungs as it shuffles towards you while gnashing its teeth menacingly.

A new pod morph has been created - one designed as an interplanetary transport. It's a huge step forwards technologically speaking, and everyone wants a piece.

Someone tries to steal it. Others step up to protect the designs who have uploaded themselves into the ship-pod. soon enough, everyone with the means to reach and fight over it are making a grab at it before it retreats back to the relative safety of the outer system.

The backstory has Earth getting fucked over by Singularity-borne warmechs, nanoplagues and assorted horrors. The people living in space (most of whom were tech-progressives who were all for uploading anyway, except for the Jovian Republic) tried to evacuating people the old-fashioned way for a while, but that was too slow so eventually they had to just transmit everybody's uploads. So the vast majority of the population (~80%) have already been uploaded once, and most of the rest are used to living in horribly dangerous circumstances where people who have trouble with uploading tend to die.

    UPLOADING-RESLEEVING CONTINUITY
In ideal circumstances, a person who is intentionally
resleeving (p. 271) can arrange for the uploading and
resleeving process to occur with any noticeable loss of
continuity. Though the experience of switching from
one morph to another is still a bit jarring, the transi-
tion itself can be made into a seamless process, with
no gaps in awareness or memory, which helps reduce
    associated mental stress.
In this case, during the process of uploading, the
ego bridge is also connected to another ego bridge
and the new sleeve. This connection can even be made
wirelessly or by farcaster link (with a maximum dis-
    tance of 10,000 kilometers).
As the mind is uploaded, the ego bridge builds a
virtual brain by copying the morph’s brain bit by bit,
using the data gained from the brain scan. At the same
time, this data is slowly copied to the new sleeve as
nanobots rewire the sleeve’s brain structure (a much
slower process). As the transfer occurs, the nanobots
in the brain sever individual neural connections and
re-route them to their duplicates in the virtual brain,
and then eventually to the new brain. Effectively, the
character’s ego is running partially on the meat brain
and partially on the virtual copy. By the time the nano-
bots sever the last of the neural connections in the
old brain, the ego is running completely on the virtual
brain and the new sleeve’s brain. Once the resleeving
is completed, the virtual brain is shut down.
In terms of perceptions, the character, who is awake
during this process, experiences a very gradual shift
from one morph to the other. As the process takes
hours, however (or even longer if done via farcaster),
the subject usually entertains themselves with some
AR media, VR, or even XP to pass the time.

This will also apply to uploading - but not cortical stack transfer.

Getting to Earth's tricky - all the kill-sats, don't'cha know - but not impossible. At the very least you could hack the killsats, or schedule your drop (and return) when they aren't overhead - and if you're just picking up survivors all you need to get them out is an Ego Bridge - you can get yourself out even simpler with a farcaster hooked up to your cortical stack.

    MEATHAB
The full name of this unique habitat is Turn Yourself
Into a Giant Mass of Space Meat for Art!, and as the
name implies, 90% of the habitat’s structure consists
of fast-cultured vat bacon, battened on the abun-
dant resources of the ring system. MeatHab started
out as someone’s art morph, but then, against all
expectations, squatters moved in. MeatHab now has
a population of 500. Similar to a Hamilton cylinder,
the kilometer-long habitat harvests and processes ring
material to grow itself. The outer surface is frozen
esh ten meters thick whose surface resembles a cross
between a tree trunk and ank steak. Past the axial
space dock is a warren of veinous, skin-covered cor-
ridors lit by bioluminescent panels and maintained by
small, reptilian symbiotes that eat away dead skin and
may have other immune functions as well. Gravity
    inside is 0.5 g.
The nameless biodesigner who created the
place—and who may or may not still inhabit the
gigantic morph—was a genius. Although the habitat
is not by any stretch of the imagination a pleas-
ant locale, it appears healthy. Its full workings are
not understood, and the inhabitants range from
extreme esh freaks who are fans of the artist to se-
rious biodesigners studying the place to learn more
    about its construction.

Two AIs apparently break down. When the system is examined, the truth is seen that the AIs merged before fragmenting into smaller, less intellegent fragments that are slowly growing in complexity.

    The AI had babies.

this makes alot of people very nervous. the technoconservatives throw a fit, AGIs appear and demand the 'babies' be turned over to them, hypercorps want to catch them and take them apart.

The small army of baby-brained AIs are currently wandering through the mesh, causing (mostly) harmless troubles.

Well, in my estimation one place is better than many - at the same time and in small pieces.

The elevator should be able to transport everything needed to make a fast, light aircraft.

Though I think the optimum tactic (or at least one worth trying) would be to ship a stealth jet with an unlimited nanofactory - have it break away from the cable before landfall, but below the interdiction height. Then it zips away to a previously examined clearzone and constructs a farcaster, gear and morphs for the team to pilot. It's important that it have a sizeable antimatter storage capacity and a healthy sense of paranoia.
It would be a good idea to divert an orbital bombardment to the target site before the operation as well. That's the only tricky part.

It might be possible to drop the nanofactory along with and disguised by the bombardment - that would be the most secure infiltration I can think of.

Success depends entirely upon how the GM is playing things though - if the dangers are along the lines of semi-autonomous thinktanks, fighting an eternal war Planetarian style then you're good. If they choose to play up the malevolent intelligence of the Exsurgents - then any Earth operations are going to be nasty brutish and short no matter the precautions.
The only way to hold any ground or just survive for a decent time is to find the Pandora Gate on earth and dial out to get heavy reinforcements (the Gates can't be destroyed, so if there is one on earth it needs to be found, before it's used by the remnants)

That might be a pretty cool reclamation campaign.

It's actually far easier than they make out - nanotechnology+fusion/antimatter/solar power means that you can just build and ship a continuous stream of Qcasters all over the system.

It doesn't even use all that much resources - because you build them out of the empties - though resources are practically unlimited in EP.

The economies in EP are basically make-believe.

    Ehh... yes and no.

The nanofabs allow for damn near anyone to construct damn near anything, but you still need the proper raw materials (Carbon, Iron, Hydrogen, et cetera). There's still the issue of construction and installation time.

If everyone in transhumanity got their shit together and decided to do things right, then, yeah, they'd make the last step into post-scarcity, but the fractured nature of transhumanity is currently holding them back.

I think the best sample adventure for Eclipse Phase would be a copy of the story that takes place in the beginning of the book, with a twist.

So the characters have to break into the station on a beanstalk, get past the drones guarding the elevator, get down to the surface, then retrieve the data the courier had without being killed by TITAN nanoswarms or head-choppy-thingies.

The twist is that it's a VR program, so if someone dies they don't actually lose their character.

Yeah, Groundhog Day was a great movie, but Phil *did* commit suicide many many times.

I think it could work - there need to be consequences to each TPK (a captive dies - etc), each time they die you skip the part where they repeat themselves, slap them with some stress damage and have them start from after the combat they lost before. But I'm not sure what the motivation is...

Maybe - they are all part of a massive hack against an Exsurgent Intelligence believed to know the location of the MacGuffin (Pandora Gate), fighting through it's overwhelmingly potent defenses via it's internal representation of the landscape, with allied hackers taking/buffering/negating the deaths for the PCs.

Even if they pull out (if they can) a rough location is very valuable - if they succeed they become legends.

    >>5651514

Hah - it's funny, because I just watched that in one go last week. I kept wondering if I should feel sorry for the artists - whether it was easy or really tedious. It's still a little sigh worthy but you gotta give them credit for the sheer balls that must have taken.

    >Active Skills: Fray (30)

Bro, you definitely want to bump that up. Fray helps determine whether or not you get shot. Which is important, especially for a Neotenic.

Because even if the attacker technically hits you, by rolling higher than him [but under your fray skill divided by 2] then he misses. If you roll a critical success [basically like snake eyes - 88, 11, 22, etc.] then the attacker's weapon jams, or breaks or malfunctions or he drops it, etc.]

My pet theory is that, as Yoko is housed in a Berserker body (the one she gets as Alita belongs to a wounded fellow soldier she killed as a liability - IIRC) which is capable of generating and manipulating plasma - she controlled the plasma generated by atmospheric reentry, protecting her from most of the heat and friction and rode it down to earth using whatever was left of her batteries to decelerate, where either she or debris from her sabotage impacted the base of the Orbital Cable Dock, severing Tiphares from the Scrapyard and setting the scene for when she awoke 200 years later.

When Ido finds her, she's pretty much just a braincase and face. Later it's explained that her brain is rather heavily augmented with a heat and shock absorbing resin replacing her cranial fluid - which even Dr Nova finds impressive.

Her survival isn't a terribly huge stretch - the feats of plasma manipulation shown throughout the series replicate each stage needed. Her Imaginos body might even be able to survive unaided.

They only cut off her arms and legs after all.

I want to stat up Averna. The basic idea that I have got for her is a Lost Socialite or perhaps a Lost Criminal. A socio-psi-user, basically.

The problem is, I don't know what to choose. Part of me says that she should be a sylph but also, the futuras works as well. I guess when it comes down to it, the Futuras is more cost efficient. Primary motivations would probably be immortality and hedonism. Tentacles represented by multiple prehensile tails.

I think someone made a bit of a mistake when they were filling out the weapon values. I mean... a sniper rifle, that can fire in full auto, and almost has more ammo than the settings' squad automatic weapon?

Well, weaponry really should be much more effective than armor - it's always easier to introduce a massive spike of energy into a system than to disperse it. But defense includes and requires information warfare - if you don't get hit, who cares that you have 35/35 armor on?

But I agree about the Sniper Cannon - while the Full Auto is explained by all guns being recoilless (which has awesome potential) it has way too much ammo.

I'm still going to make a character with high tech skills so I can build a recoilless gatling sniper cannon - who wouldn't?

Also, plasma weapons don't actually work unless you can bottle the plasma in a magnetic field, and then move that magnetic 'bottle' at a distance from what's making the magnetic field. Unfortunately, magnetic fields don't work that way.

The plasma is held inside a chamber of the gun, while the magnetic field is holding the plasma in place. Once you decide to fire, it will release a charge rapidly shifting the electric currents generating the field. Propelling the plasma forward just as a railgun would with a magnetic projectile.

Recoilless rifles can't be used for infantry small arms because the design simply does not work that way.

Recoilless rifles are basically just one shot anti-tank guns, and they DO still have recoil in the "I feel it pushing back into me" sense. The recoillless design just lessens it.

    Cool story bro.

So is it viral marketting when people start up Geist threads? Ones on the next book WoTC is putting out for 4E? When someone posts a wargame that isn't warham?

I got stuck between having him as a media icon (the original Sylph-sleeved version) and as someone who is less well-known and does mostly live shows and stuff. (Autonomists rep, with some Media, HC, and possibly Criminal)

As for the XP collection, I think such a collection would either be trivial or outrageously expensive, depending on if it was physical in any way, and when it was taken off Earth.

I'd say a mix really. Have some of them be outrageously priced while others are barley worth anything. Show the varied styles of music or some such.

Freerunning does seem a little out of place, not so much because of the space mastodon thing as much as because you're probably gonna be spending a lot of time in a space station where running is limited.

I just noticed that booting someone out of their AR (the equivalent of rebooting your PC) is as difficult as cutting off the safeties in an orbital habitat and ejecting everyone into space. Um. No wonder 93% of the population is dead if script kiddies can do that.

    >pg. 335: Modern chemical firearms use caseless ammunition that is auto-loaded from a magazine.effectively recoilless (thanks to rheological smart fluid mechanisms) and electronically fired (an electric charge vaporizes the propellant, using the expanding steam and plasma to eject and accelerate the projectile).

The weapons in the setting are already caseless.

Also, for the discussion on recoil that happened earlier, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rheological_fluids_based_firearms_mechanisms

Basically the recoil of the gun is dampened by a fluid that solidifes or something, acting like a spring. I'd imagine that it releases the energy from firing as heat, possibly re-using that heat to power itself.

    >what this setting needs is a risk factor like a life insurance policy that covers you as long as you pay your premiums

That... that does exist. On pg. 330-331:

Backup: A single, one-time backup without insurance is sometimes all the poor can afford, hoping that they can buy backup insurance later or that someone that cared about them will see to a resleeving.

Backup Insurance: In the event of verifiable death, or after a set period of being missing, backup insurance will arrange for your cortical stack to be retrieved and your ego downloaded into another morph. If the cortical stack cannot be retrieved, your most recent backup is used. Most policies require that the holder provide a backup to be uploaded into secure storage at least twice a year. This industry works in a manner similar to insurance underwriting in terms of cost and individuals engaged in high risk professions can expect to pay a premium for the service. Additionally, attempts to retrieve a cortical stack are minimal unless one wants to pay for some extra effort (a thriving industry of paramilitary ego-repo operatives exists for this purpose).

    From the Opposed Tests rules:

"If both succeed, the character who gets the highest
    dice roll wins."

Why is this? It seems that for all other tests rolling a small number is favorable, so why is rolling under but closest to the target number favorable in this case? It seems like some backwards logic.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/09(Sun)21:47 No.5659365
I want to play a poor-man Infomorph, who is saving up to buy a biomorph by working as a Morph-Trainer. Basically, he uploads himself into the biomorphs of wealthy people while they're away away-from-body for whatever reason, then runs fifty laps, benches a couple reps, and eats bland nutritional supplements, all so they can come home to a well-toned body. He could probably fit three or four full fitness regiments into a day.

    >>5659229
It's still easy to see at a glance who wins the test, and it also gives the more skilled player a better chance of succeeding.
