    22 KB Panzerquest - Survival in Normandy Panzerquest !PkW5/IX/aA 08/31/09(Mon)01:32 No.5661706
It is three in the morning, on the 9th of August, 1944.

You are part of a Panzer IV tank crew of the 8th Company, of the II. Battalion, of the 12. SS-Panzerdivision "Hitlerjugend". You are only 17 years old.

Only 15 hours ago you were proudly fighting in the name of the Fatherland, since your first assignment your team has taken out over 7 Allied tanks. However only 6 hours ago Canadian forces performed a viciously executed strike that was not heralded by artillery fire. You were taken by surprise and now you are fighting for your young lives.

It all happened so fast, you don't know where the rest of your company is, all you know is that you are hiding in a dark street somewhere within Falaise. You don't know exactly where. You do know that there are Allied forces roaming nearby, and you know that your Panzer IV's left tread has come undone. You also know that your Tank Commander, Hans Stueffel, is dead and currently laying inside your tank beside Klaus Schuman and Reiner Witzen, the tank's driver and loader.

It is pitch black, the sounds of war surrounds you, your fellow team mates cry out for what they should do. You, Maxwell Hummel, are now a Tank Commander.

    What do you do?
    >> Anonymous 08/31/09(Mon)01:36 No.5661739
I calm my nerves and try to steady the men, when the sounds start to die down, I lift the hatch and take a peek out.
    >> Anonymous 08/31/09(Mon)01:37 No.5661750
It would probably be a good idea to stay tight for a while, wait until the sounds of enemy tanks pass. I mean do we know if the tank is operation other than a loose tread?
    >> Panzerquest !PkW5/IX/aA 08/31/09(Mon)01:43 No.5661800
    >>5661739
The hatch opens up slowly with protesting creaks. The foul smell of war hisses through the thin gap and screams of agony fill the night air. Light casted by the fires of torn buildings and decimated camps paint a shattered image of the field. You are in a small street, only wide enough for your tank to squeeze through. Seems your late Commander's last command gave you a safe sanctuary to hide. Before you rests the consequences of failure, a Panzer IV bearing the marking "704" kneels before you wearing a crown of flames. Your heart races as you remember just three days before you shared a meal with the very crew of that tank, one of them gave you his tobacco ration as your own kit was given a block chocolate instead due to your age.

In the far distance you can hear treads rolling, they don't sound familiar to those of a Panzer IV or a Panther, they sound far and out of sight.

    Ok, hop on out.
Get the crew to pull the commanders body out. Before we dump him nab his hat, coat, ranktabs, and radio/headphones.

Now get the crew and get the replacement track out. Get the repairs started. Put one man on watch.

Klaus voices concern about Hans, saying that it would be disrespectful to leave his body in the snow for the Allies to find. Reiner quietly agrees, reciting off Hans' decorations of war.

Without any disagreement they hop out and tend to the tank, but Klaus is the first to bring up the core of the issue. They don't have enough links to finish the tread, about three links short. Reiner frantically scours the sides of your tank, "Die Schmutzigfrau", but can't find enough.

As you're the only one remaining to keep watch, you scan the area and can't find anyone living, only the scattered bodies of Germans littering the streets. You can hear the sounds of explosions in the distance.

You reach into your pocket and pull out a pack of crumpled cigarettes. You pullout two of themand hand them to your fellow crew, giving them their commands. They put them to their lips with shakey hands. Like you, they have never smoked before, but now seems like a good of time as any.

As the two run out towards Panzer 704 you try to take command of the Radio. You're not trained for this, due to the Hitlerjugend's rushed training methods you were never told how to operate the radio properly, an unfortunate underestimation. You're sure though that you at least have more critical thinking ability than your fellow crew. You curse under your breath as you blindly operate the dials, picking up nothing but crushing static. Finally in frustration you throw the headphones off, letting the soft crackle fill the hallow silence within your tank. Your metal coffin.

Klaus and Reiner return with the nessesary links, an extra rifle and some ammunition, as well as a can of fuel. Due to the engulfed cabin they were unable to get anything out, let alone examine bodies. Klaus could only stutter to you the smell of burnt bodies being similar to bacon at breakfast. This detail unsettles everyone.

You perform your rite on your late Commander, giving him a proud salute as his body is consumed by the warm and comforting flames. The others quickly begin work on the tread, you have to sit for a few moments watching the body burn. He was the first dead person you have ever seen up close, you remember how his head sharply flew backward and how he slumped into the tank like a sack of potatoes into your lap. You remember his gurgling cries as blood filled his throat.

You now hear Klaus crying out, he is frantically trying to ram the last link home, he is shouting out only one word with rapid repetition:

    "ALLIES. ALLIES. ALLIES"

Have some respect, that tank and it's crews were brave war heroes who killed dozens of russians.

Heck, they even drove up to and parked right in front of a russian 75mm anti-tank gun. Then they machinegunned the crew before it could fire.

You quickly run back to the tank, screaming to your crew to get inside and hold out. They both do so without hesitation. You can now hear the rumble of an allied tank approaching the street. You don't have enough time to climb inside the hatch and instead slide down the back and hide behind the rear.

You go prone to the street, gazing through the underside of your tank. Through the obstacles that block your line of sight you can see some sort of tank enter view. It rumbles to a halt and begins to rotate it's turret towards your men. You hold your breath and stare intently at the gun. You don't even know what it is. Is it Canadian? British? Does it make a difference at this point?

The enemy take holds still for a moment, you can see someone poking their head out and peering into the corridor. All he sees is flames behind your tank, unknown to him to be the body of your late Commander. The open hatch of your tank lets out a soft wisp of smoke, coming from the tobacco your crew nervously inhales from.

He leans down and begins chatting to his men in a foreign language, they seem to be contemplating.

I don't know what a tank by itself would do, considering that they are almost always accompanied by some form of infantry. I very much doubt the tank commander and / or a crewmember would jump out and stroll over to take a peek, though, especially if a battle is still going on.

With lightning speed you jump to your feet and scramble up the rear of the tank. The crew of the enemy tank spot you and raise their rifles, screaming "Halt!", despite your efforts, fear sets in.

You sit there drapped over the open hatch of your tank, below you your men staring up with terror in their eyes. Your own glassy orbs are violently shaking, you have never been so scared. The two soldiers hop down and take a single step forward with rifles raised. "STAND DOWN" they scream out.

You can only sit there like a rock, eyes wide open, hands trembling. Soon you hear a new sound, something like the scream of a woman. Without warning, the enemy tank is surrounded by a fireball and leaps sideways, the men who moments ago had their rifles to you falling forward on their faces. Over the sounds of metal falling to the ground you hear a familiar rumble, it's a Panther tank....

You drop into your tank and command Klaus to take a rifle and take out the stranglers. He nods and pokes his head up from the hatch. From inside you can hear the sounds of the rifle's shots ringing through the metal of the hull. You quickly operate the turret and line up your shot, and with the training you actually DID receive, you let loose a shell.

The tank is decimated, collapsing on itself as the pummeled walls of the tank give out. You watch another shell from the Panther come screaming in and strike it again from the front, bringing it to ruin.

You look up to Klaus and say nothing of a word, he merely looks down and nods and climbs back in. You take the chance to poke your head back up and see Klaus did his job, and so did your shot and that of the Panthers. You can see it rolling past the wrecked hulk of burning metal. An old man is peering out of the Panther's hatch, he cries out over the flames

You address him and give your designation, he nods and bellows back "We're from 4th Company, where is the rest of your men?"

You frown and tell him that you have been separated and that your Commander has died, the veteran scratches his head for a moment.

"Well I guess that makes you Commander, I mean you're putting your neck on the line here right? As for your Company I haven't seen them, we're trying to reinforce the 6th and 2nd Company at a nearby bridge. If you're operational then follow me!"

Answer in the affirmative. Crank track, wait for additional units to pass if any, and then pull in behind. Load AP round.

Klaus confirms that he still needs to adjust the last link, but he can be up and running in ten minutes.

You tell the Panther Commander that you won't be able to join him yet, he points out westward and tells you that's where you'll be needed once you get up and running.

"Honestly, if you want to run, I won't tell anyone. You're too young for this. But if you want to fight, I'll put in a word for you for going above and beyond."

The Commander lets out a booming laugh "That's good to hear kid! If we survive this, remind me to buy your crew a round!" He gives of a salute and then commands his tank forward, rushing away into the fray.

Klaus hops out and with Reiner and finish work on the tread. You stand out of your hatch tapping the metal rim of the open portal. Eyes scanning the field. You can hear planes flying overhead, and you fear they're not any friend of yours. They sound too high to be concerned with you though.

Reiner, while helping ram in a rod, asks you "Maxwell... do you think we're going to win this?"

Reiner nods and continues to help. Staying quiet for the rest of the procedure. Klaus hops back up and down into the tank and fires up the engine. With a few sputtered barks the Smutzigfrau roars to life and her treads vibrate with a familiar hum.

    "We're fully operational Max-

We're fully operational Commander" Klaus says with a smile, "Request for another smoke for my efforts?"

We still got a radio-operator/hull0MG gunner? If so make him loader and the old loader the gunner. Speed up loading and firing times.

You bring the tank rumbling forward, lurching out of your hiding spot and roaming down the street, following the path of the Panther. It had been 20 minutes since you last communicated with him, and you still didn't know how to operate the radio. Standing cautiously out of the hatch you scan the area, seeing lots of bodies paving the sides of the streets, mostly Germans. You also see several downed tanks from both sides, one is smashed through the wall of a home, another flipped on it's side with a punched hole out the bottom. The air is thick with smoke and light is scarce, only flames light the path in front of you and the occasional flash in the thick clouds above the rooftops, their booming thump muffled in the fog. As you drive further you come to a bridge that has been taken out, the grade of the river bank is too steep for your tank to traverse, and the water seems unsafe to cross anyway. You scan around for a detour and spot a German tank smoldering, it is clearly a Panther, and you can see the body of the Commander you had spoke with laying beside it, or at least the upper half of him.

Guess he won't be buying that round.

Figure the loader sitting on the primary gunnery controls is still going to be a bit faster than the TC having to work from the extension(if any on that tank) AND trying to keep track of everything else going on.

The trouble spot I'm worried about is the new loader having no idea exactly what different types of rounds look like and just how they're laid out in the racks.

Smoked a handful of Soviet tanks before being overwhelmed and destroyed using the standard tank vs tank tactics the Soviets had developed for taking out Tigers and other heavy tanks. One's body was relatively undamaged, one was destroyed except for the turret, and the last had enough of its parts operational to make combining the first two into one working tank possible.
