"Very well, I shall go with you."
The tattooed man smiles. "I knew you'd be reasonable."
He steps inside the dwelling and gives a short speech to the villagers, telling them that whatever power Andreus had shown them, it is quite a common sight in larger communities, and by no means should it be a reason to worship someone.
"We are all faithful servants of the Masters and they are the ones whom we should worship and dedicate ourselves to. Perhaps the Masters seem distant and uncaring, but this is a foolish notion. Their will is what keeps us all alive and their plans ensure our well-being. Andreus has already rejected his foolish pride and will now leave the village to serve the Masters in the worthiest way. There will be no consequences for the moment of weakness, provided that you serve the Masters faithfully."
The villagers don't believe his lies for a single moment, but they pretend to comply.
The tattooed man leaves the building and leads Andreus to a small boat, hidden in the bushes near the river's shore.
    "Off we go, then."
    >> Reality !ta922ttXCI 10/07/09(Wed)16:52 No.6175681
As Andreus and the tattooed man depart, you turn your attention to the village. Although the people there are your followers, they now lack a leader. Talos might be a suitable candidate, though it seems Hagron's blessings appeals to him more than your own. Unfortunately, this village lacks someone similar to Plato.

The other village is prospering thanks to the knowledge you bestowed upon them. The guards there still don't suspect anything. In fact, there are rumours that their numbers in this village shall be reduced soon, as they might be needed elsewhere.

Andreus and his tattooed companion are rowing downstream. The man speaks: "It will take us some time to reach civilization. In the meantime, I'd expect you have a lot of questions."
Is there something you'd want Andreus to ask about specifically?

"Exactly where are we going? One of the larger towns on this island, or are we going by ship?"

After receiving the answer to that, request general background information about the empire.

"One of the towns. You will receive proper training there."
The request for general information is met with a smirk.
"Ah right, not everyone is fortunate enough to receive proper education. Well then..."
His lecture consists mostly of praising the Masters and their great work. You manage to gather some information, though.
The Masters indeed live in the oceans. They communicate with trusted human servants using the Art. They apparently control all islands in the area (he claims more, but it might be boasting). The only duty of the servants is sending tribute - grain, meat and other foodstuffs.
Trade routes exist between islands, however ocean-faring ships are rare. There is also some trade between the surface and the Masters - more food in exchange for metal, gemstones and works of craft.

Has anyone ever seen one of the Masters, or do they send servants?
    >> Reality !ta922ttXCI 10/07/09(Wed)17:19 No.6176072
    >>6175999
The Masters themselves are not seen, and their servants only rarely. Tribute is usually paid by leaving the goods on the shore - they disappear overnight. The same goes for trading with the Masters - the details regarding the trade are worked out using the Art as a medium of communication. Trade goods are left on the shore and in the morning humans find that the agreed-upon items have been left in exchange.

Are there any bright followers in the first village we could send over to the second?
Also ask the tattooed man about what will happen once the training is done.

Unfortunately, no. Except for Plato, that is. That village has a population of about 30, Plato and Andreus were the only exceptional men in it.

"That is not for me to decide. Most are ready to choose their own path once training is done."

And how did he come to be taught the Art? The implication being that one who is held in such esteem by the Masters must have no small skill of his own.

The idea is for Andreus to assume the role of student, attentive and eager to learn at the knee of his new tutor and mentor.

He seems surprised at the question.
"No, I'm a human... Oh. The tattoos are a mark of one skilled in using the Art, if that's what you mean. The same goes for shaving your head."
He does not mention his curious appearance: the slightly elongated, pointed ears, the sharp facial features, the gaunt frame. He seems to consider such differences unimportant.

I vote we give the villagers short visions and such over the time that he's gone that tells them of Andreus future return, to give them hope. Visions that tell of their liberation from their oppressors, led by Andreus with his new-garnered knowledge and the flame rightousness of their god.

Meanwhilea Hagran, through Talos, will act as our presence and hold hopes up by acting as an intermediate of our will. He might not be as keen on praying and learning or the mysteries of life, but he is a god of bravery after all (I think?) and thus will instill bravery in the people.

Andreus: Tell me more about the art? What exactly is the nature of the art? I take it is an extensions of the... masters powers. But how? What is the connection.

Also, I don't think we've given Andreus his personal powers yet, which we explicitly could. I think we pretty much must so as to have anything that they can take to be "the Art".

What is his name? Is he part of some special force, which is why he was at the island? How many art users are there, proportionally with the rest of the people? What is the biggest city he has ever seen? We can begin influencing it and gain followers.

Either way, I can't think of anymore questions. We need to send followers to the other villages on our island, and expand our influence. If possible, Andreus does the same in the city he goes to.

Ligish leads him to the house they occupy. There are three other people inside, two native to the island, the third shorter and stouter. They are all shaved and marked in the same way as Ligish, though only one of the natives has a tattoo more extensive than him. The stout one, however, has a long beard.

The basic lessons are finished. Andreus becomes a true practitioner of the Art, receiving his first tattoos.
Andreus now joins Zhuang as Ligish's second apprentice. These lessons consist mainly of practicing efficient casting and mock duels between Andreus and Zhuang.
At first, Zhuang's experience lets him win those easily, but as time passes, Andreus manages to catch up with him. After a few months, he is equal in rank to Zhuang and they are evenly matched in a duel.
He is now in very good relations with both Zhuang and Ligish. Of course, his faith remains unwavering.
When it comes to spells, ones related to knowledge, protection and fire are the ones that come easiest to Andreus. This is undoubtedly due to your portfolio.

In which case it could be said that we are something like a lens - the Art is an exercise in willpower and intent, used by those with talent to manipulate the physical world. It may be that this talent is present in low levels among the entire populace, and their belief in us serves to focus the collective will in a common direction, where otherwise it'd go to waste.

A pan simmering on the stove just bubbles and steams, the energy dissipating into the environment. Put a lid on it, though, collect and concentrate it, and you can move the world.

Yes, it is possible. The otter might now stand a chance should it come to blows.

The otter swims into the underwater city. It seems abandoned, however. The architecture looks strange and unfamiliar. Many constructions are open, roof-less. You guess it'd be more practical for an aquatic race. Common decorations include tangled, spindly protrusions, resembling the tattoos of Art users, spiral patterns and red crystal. In the middle of the city, there is a large pool of a colorful liquid, constantly swirling. It seems to be heavier than water. From the center of the pool, a pillar of violet flame rises. This central decoration is obviously a work of the Art and might serve another, unknown purpose.
The only hint about the Masters' whereabouts is the numerous entrances to what seem to be tunnels in the ocean floor.
