    Part VII: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/6419801/

From where we last left off you had successfully infiltrated the Arwenken Mage Academy and dealt with its Grand Master, a powerful divination mage who you feared may hinder you. She was quite adamant in her conviction that you lead a path of pointless sorrow for millions. She regaled you about how you would only destroy what little humanity you had left, and even after you burned the world it will never be enough. You remained immune to petty conviction. It was when she tried to appeal to Catharine that the real danger arose. In Catharine the Grand Master saw the last of a bloodline from ancient times. The Hinter family, the last remaining warrior house from the war against evil, was prophesied to destroy evil should it ever return, but the family had degenerated in wealth and land over the centuries only keeping its ceremonial respect. Was it meant for Eric or herself? Regardless, she was asked to selflessly sacrifice her own life for the cause. She responded by applying the point of your sword to her face.

Utilizing the power of shadows and the place you have created to connect them you managed to escape the Mage Academy. With all immediate witness dead you can not be too sure what consequence it will have upon the City immediately, but after using up so much energy you are completely drained and Catharine was forced to lead you back to your guest chamber. In the castle you were forced to rest, completely vulnerable for the day until the sun sets once again.

Belongings: Ragged robes, noble garbs, Armour Medium, long sword, Armoured Galleon (Docked at Kreis)
Known Dark Arts: Soul Obliteration (Cost High), Zone of Secularity (Cost Very High), Dark Imply (Cost Low), Shadow Step (Cost Range Dependent)
    Evil Power: Unremarkable
Minions of Note: Kelgris (???), Catharine (Mistress), Hinterport Dockworkers (protecting/maintaining ship)

The news of the triple homicide eventually got out by sunrise and among the noble plateau there was a great distress. The death was initially thought suicide but further investigation exposed it as a cover up. Anyone caught leaving the city now will be put under immediate suspicion for the crime. You have an alibi, being sick at the time and confined to your quarters, but that will not save you from being hunted should you try to flee.

Amongst the chaos came worse news later in the day just before sunset. A scout from the east brought a report that an army of steppe warriors numbering in the tens of thousands have begun mobilizing on the opposing side of the Great Continent Divide. Like fickle sheep those that fled the capital from the price setting revolt have begun to migrate back to the capital for safety. The nobles too are not allowed to leave because of the crime you caused, but also for their own safety. Roving bands of steppe raiders ride before the main army and the countryside and highways will not be safe. Unable to leave, and afraid for their safety they make a reluctant but forced alliance with Naheland and send for their knights and men at arms to march to Naheland’s side. A war not seen in at least one hundred years will soon take place.

You are caught in the eye of an approaching storm.

What are our long term plans in this situation here? What do we want to do? Or get others to do?

We've got this fortress city that will soon be filled with soldiers, and regular folk alike. And then a Mongolian horde analogue at the gates.

Maybe we can wait until there is a siege, or right before, when the city is filled and the Horde of riders is outside. Maybe at night we shadow step out to parlay with the leader of this horde, promise him a break in the defenses. We step back inside, set up some sabotage.

Or something else, I don't know.

    >>6462464
NIGGERS, then we've got to bring them down from the inside. First, since they do not trust Naheland, we make their reputation worse; poison and burn food storages, salt crops, whatever we gotta do. But make sure Naheland gets blamed for it. Second, we gotta make a way into the city ripe for those eastern riders to waltz in and start slaughtering people. Then, we set Kelgris on the panicking masses.
    >> Anonymous 10/27/09(Tue)21:22 No.6462538
Send Catharine down to see what the mood of the nobles are while we rest and recover. We are on the cusp of growing in power once more and there should be tensions that we will be able to exploit. I'm thinking we can cause the nobles to unite in hatred against Lord Freyer (who obviously was lax in his duties and let those barbarians mass, of course) and have him demoted. The bitterness and anger from that will be easy to exploit, and we will have a foot in the door with the military.

    Nice.
I think we should make sure the ship is ready to high tail it as all times, even if we can't just up and leave right at this moment.

Taking our wench out for a walk, once we are feeling up to it, and get the general vibe of the city while we think of what we might want to do.

If our goal is to turn this place into our own little fortress, perhaps we could ride out to see if we can talk to the invaders, under the guise of trying to look diplomatic to the nobles, while really we're setting things up for the invaders.. as long as they give us a nice place to relax in the city after they take over.

    >>6462567
Not sure we are up to turning this into our fortress without a complex plan that unites the entire city behind us, and plans like that are rare.

Plus, isn't the king in this city? Probably going to be hard to depose the king right under his nose.
    >> Bill Murray !!WYG9L8p7tJh 10/27/09(Tue)21:28 No.6462625
Yeah. If we end up in this city during a siege, we should fuck up the food supply. Poison it if possible, or just destroy it.

Something like that would force an eventual battle where we could slip between all kinds of cracks.

From what you can gather, the nobles trust Freyr absolutely. He has proved himself a capable commander before. What secret you pull from the rumours, are claims that Freyr is of common birth. It is unknown why since he has a noble family and house, but it is a stain on his reputation that has surfaced as of late.

The Eastern Riders are bound to start moving over and around the mountains at anytime. Since it is nigh impossible to travel across during the winter news from there is hard to come by.

That they would have been so ready with such a massive host over only a winter is very odd indeed.

I have to say, we should start undermining Freyr. There should be a herald in the palace somewhere, visit him and get the record of his house to analyze.

While we are doing that have Cath listen for any rumors among the nobles. What is the general opinon on the barbarians? Are they worried about invasion? How are they regarded? (eg. bloodthirsty savages?)

Knowing these things will allow us to >imply down in the town about them and whip up an atmosphere of fear. Really talk them up as bloodthirsty and murderous, if they take the town they will kill us, rape the bodies, and sew our skins into clothes. And if we are very lucky, they will do it in that order.

You get to work sending castle staff to dig up dirt on Freyr. You imply that the knowledge alone could be worth a lot to people, and while you can't offer them too much you'll take the blame from them if it backfires. Greedy as they are, they fall for it and get to work.

The populace views the barbarians as the unknown, they do not worship Valtir and they have always been on the sidelines of history. Some believe an entire different civilization exists on the other side of the barren steppes, but none have every returned who venture too far. As far as the common people are concerned, they are raiders, and will happily rape and pillage to meet their base desires. It does not take any work at all to reassure them of this belief.

    >>6462737
I'll expand on this. My thinking was if we undermine Freyr it will reduce his ability to lead the defense and hopefully let the Mong-- hill people sack the city. With all the fear we (will) sow in the townsmen and nobles they will do all kinds of things like commit suicide rather than fall into barbarian hands or fight to their last breath. If possible we should also devise truly hideous traps and things like alchemist's fire to use against the barbarians. Make them HATE the townsmen.

When the city falls, the rapine and bloodshed will be DELICIOUS and feed us unsurpassed amounts of evil.

    Don't worship Valtir, eh?

This sounds promising. If they are crushed by the military alliance then we can rally the remnants to our side, and if they win we can try and rally them from within using dark powers.

It's also possible the are trying to help us since they don't follow the star-god. We could try shadow-walking outside the walls and then riding off to see them once they are underway.

How far a ride is their staging grounds?

Whilst making your rounds in the castle cold hollow footsteps on stone clack behind you. When you turn to face it, standing in a suit of full plate armour and holding his helm under his arm is Lord Freyr with four other attendants.

His eyes judge you as they stare into you trying to burrow holes. He has never seen your face because you always cover it with the cowl of your robe, so voice is deep and unwelcoming "Femento was it? I do believe I haven't the chance to ask what YOU will commit to this war effort."

With a few people in the right places to open up the proper doors or sally ports, even the most impregnable city can quickly fall--anyone remember how Constantinople fell to the Turks? Even with multiple tiers of walls, you just need a door or two opened at each. Or jam an inner gate so it can't open.

Preferably, meet with the main horde leader beforehand so we can direct the invasion. They can't keep us inside at night, not anymore with our Shadow Step.

We're an ancient evil reborn. We get stronger by causing evil, causing others to do evil, and plain old murder/violence.

Alright guys, let's become a leader in the armed forces and undermine Freyr. If we sally out, get "cut off" and meet with the leader of the enemy we can look really good by "predicting" their strikes and seem like some kind of tactical genius. Eventually we might be trusted enough to lead over the rumored commoner Freyer, especially if we really sully his reputation and do really well in battles.

Then we can decide which side we wish to fight with, the barbarians or the city. After all, we will have a hand in both at that point.

We have magic, listed in the OP, that drains us--we can destroy the souls of those not on their guard, with some unique effect with each person, we can create a zone where the gods are blocked, we can push people's inner desires further than they would go normally, and we can step between shadows.

We have a skeleton, Kelgris, who was the first we killed with the soul obliteration. We have a skull that is a real-time globe of the oceans, from the captain of a ship we soul obliterated.

We killed Catherine's brother--technically she did, with a dagger to the back--who was a paladin of Voltaire. We killed her father and the priest who took care of her. Then we took a warship and a crew loyal to our coin and sailed north, then rode to this city.

It would be very bad if we were to face attack from both within and without. Indeed that was what unseated my from my fortress previously, so I am very cautious on this point. Saying nothing more you take a step back and move to the side of the hallway. Freyr turns his back once more and leaves in peace.

No news from the herald yet, which is info in its self. He's having a hard time finding anything. The old king was the one who put him in the position in the first place. He is now dead and only his son is left behind to rule the kingdom.

The city layout hasn't changed since I last went over it in detail. The walls are being stocked with weapons and siege engines of war though. The food is being scattered over the city and the roofs treated so that they may not catch on fire so easily.

Your stories fool the more gullible and naive of the soldiers and nobles. But not too many.

Do we have a "safe place" in this city? This sounds petty, but there are about to be some food shortages, we might want to hoard. It also wouldn't hurt to pick up some kind of personal guard and arm them with basics. Maybe find some scum on the streets and feed and arm them or some shit. Basically, not someone who will follow you around all the time and embarrass you, but someone to keep a "safe zone" for you and to take some arrows in the face for you if you need to move around when the city is taken / falls into disorder.

And on that note, I am off to the gym, so I can be a dark lord some day. Hopefully this will still be here for me to read. How often do you do this OP?

    Control of the city.

We should concentrate on our survival too. We should discreetly hoard food. keep it for those loyal to us. don't sell any of it.

Hunger is a great breeder of desperation which can lead to evil with a quickness.

The thing is to do it discreetly. Can we perhaps involve ourselves with the storing of food and weapons within the city. Just make a few things disappear over time until it becomes a problem.

So, we need a way to get food hoarded in the inner sections of the city where the nobility are. Obvious shortages in areas where the commoners reside. We may not have a riot again but there will be hard feelings.

Have Kelgris go down into the city and round up all the rouges that betrayed us a couple sessions ago. Drag them to an abandoned building and tie them up. When we have time, go down there and execute a couple of them in front of the others, flash our eyes, and imply to boost their fear. Make sure they know that they are now working for US, and the price for betrayal will be worse than death next time. City scum will come in handy when the time is right.

Also try to raise a personal guar. Recruit some of the fleeing farmers with strong backs. Good, honest folk who are just fleeing for their lives. Promise them coin, food, and shelter in return for service. We can corrupt them later, right now we need manpower.

During the night with Kelgris at your side you manage to track down some of the more, insubordinate and cowardly rebel elements in the city. Your rampage goes well into the night. There are not many of them left, but you have them brutally cut down so that the less injured and more promising of them know that they have no where to run. They cannot escape the city, they cannot show them self to the authorities and you will follow them to the gates of hell. You own them, and you expect them to be useful. They will be useful as underground agents, but as a military force, the idea is laughable.

You know, instead of saving the city or the horde, should we choose to ally with them, I think it would be more evil to break both powers and leave the land a lawless frontier. It would also leave the power situation open for us to make claims.

We should assist the city's defense as best we can (not risking ourselves of course) but at a crucial moment use our magic to blot out the stars again. That should cripple the faithful defenders' morale enough to let the barbarians through.

By that point, both sides should be weakened to the point that they will destroy eachother. Then we can swoop in and rally the broken remnants. Instant army.

"The riders are drawing ever closer, my liege. I know not with what speed they can move, but a day or two is all it will take before they besiege the walls of out great city."

Sitting at the end of the table is a young boy in regal clothing, barely looking over the age of ten. He looks confused and lost at the man in armor speaking to him. It is Freyr who speaks on his behalf.

"Do not speak with such a worried and harsh tone to his majesty! I have briefed him already. And we have come to a decision."

"I am Lord Griffith Femento. I doubt you have heard of me, for there is no reason you should have so far away from the Principalities. But if there is one thing you should have heard of, it is the warfare that plauges my homeland. I have seen more battle than most men have dreamed of, and in all respects it centers around one thing... the attack that breaks your foe. The decisive moment where power is applied. You wish to sit here and wait them out. Well and good, but what will you do then? You wish to wait and attack when they are weakend from hunger and attrition. What if they do not starve, and have a way to sustain themselves? As Lord Freyr said, they are not stupid and will not march without the ability to attack. It will be WE who starve, and when they finally attack WE will be the ones broken.

No, we have the cavalry and the discipline. Who here among you doubts that we are better than these barbarians, these fools who think to take the land that is rightfully yours? They cannot breed horses or war beasts with such little land as they possess, and they will fall before our cavalry like wheat before a scythe. To refuse to press this advantage is to invite ruin, invite a battle where their barbarian infantry will be able to use the streets and walls to shield themselves from our charges.

To take the attack to them, not to sit behind walls... that is the essence of warfare."

Running out and telling the barbarians of this plan would also work. They could divert a portion of their force to ransack the defenseless city that our agents just so happened to open up.

We have several options that will work best.

    1) Assassins take out Lord Freyr during the battle, the king at home. We could attempt a power grab. May not upset the power enough--another general could take over, noble opposition might be too great. Also, we'd have to find an assassin willing to potentially lose the city to the horde, and they might have family here.

    2) Assassins take out the city's leadership like above, we open the gates and feast of the evil generated.

    3) Assassins take out the chieftain, we assume his place. Possibly through assassins only weakening the chieftain, and us finishing him in combat with a spectacular soul obliteration in front of the army.

    4) Convince chieftain we are a demon, provide intel on the city and its battle plans, get partnership with the chieftain and let him conquer the city.

I think we should perhaps ask if we can go out with a small team to scout the Barbarians and perhaps speak with them diplomatically. If they know that we helped them sack the city, we might have a better chance of surviving this and getting something out of it.

Freyr for the first time curls a warm smile behind his heard, "Of course."

"I don't want to go alone though, I want you there."

"My liege, you may not understand, but you must go. The fate of the country lies upon your shoulders now. That is what it is to be king. I cannot lead the troops. You must be the pride of the people to defeat the enemy. The generals will watch over you. You will need to do what they say."

    "But..."

"Please you highness. I must stay here and guard the city. I cannot take your place. Not now, not ever. You are your father's son. You must succeed him."

The boy casts down his eyes, "Alright."

"You will thank me someday. I know you can do it. That I can make your father proud of me too by making sure you become a fine man."

Fish around about the Queen and how old the former King was when he had his son. Also when Freyr came to court first. We need to get a solid idea about what his relation is with the king.

You have to make great haste to keep speed with the man, he is marching fast, determined, and with conviction. Up the spiral stair cases of the towers, across the red carpet and past the painted treasures and expensive candles illuminating the dark interior of the castle stoned off from the sunlight. He finally reaches a large chamber door with two royal guards attending outside. You are still outside of earshot but he motions with his hands away. The guards salute and march down the hallway. Ducking out of the way the guards pass you without noticing. With the two of them gone you rush to the door as it slowly closes and hold it open peering inside.

You hear the young boy speak in joy, “Freyr!”

“My liege, I must show you your family’s pride.” Through the crack in the door you watch Freyr move to a locked chest opposite to the large bed the young king sleeps in all alone.

“You told me never to open that Freyr.” The boy’s voice sounds meek and confused.

“I did your majesty. In here is your treasure. Your father’s gift to you when you would need it. With the hordes so close it must be brought to bear once more.” Producing a key from person Freyr unlocks the chest. Producing from the chest and covered in purple velvet is a sword. A large hand and a half sword adorned with a mighty ruby in its pummel and a blade that shines with silver.

The boy looks awestruck, “Its beautiful Freyr.”

“This is Naheland’s heart. A sword passed down from king to king. It has slain monsters and evil tyrants from the east many times.”

    “Wow.”

“Look to the window your majesty. Look at the armies ready to do battle. They ride for you. For our great kingdom.”

The Boy rushes to the window and looks out with gaping mouth in awe. Freyr grips the sword’s handle, so hard his knuckles begin to whiten, so much that they might break.

“It’s a King’s duty to serve their country my liege. Every King is not just a man, but a symbol. He is above other men, much higher. His right to rule is that of which is given by the stars by right. People are always afraid. Can they eat? Can they love? Can they have their desires? The world seems so large, and they seem so small. How else can they survive?”

Freyr takes small steps toward the boy now who is still gazing out the window with hands and face mashed up against the glass. The boy doesn’t even appear to be listening.

“A king fit for Naheland?” You whisper. “Is there a king here who can save the people? Who can give them the hope for a better tomorrow? No, now, while he's happy, while he can't see you do it. He never has to know. There will never be another chance. You can say that Fermento was the one who did it."

Freyr is standing behind the boy now and he kneels down and places a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “It is coming to the time when you must bear your burden for your country.”

Motionless. Not a cloud in the sky, not a sound in the air. You look upon a scene frozen in time. How many seconds pass by? How many minutes? Could an eternity go by in this moment? What does it matter? To you? No? To the Lord, maybe. To the boy? Yes, yes it does.

"Yes, end his pain Lord Freyr. He does not need to see his land come to ruin, his kingdom divided between those petty nobles that damned you every waking moment, and those bestial barbarians. Kill him upon his father's blade. Your blade."

Standing up to his feet once again a sword raised high the boy is looking down at the soldiers and the city below. “Look Freyr! The Hussars are-”

There would be no more. The crown with fresh blond hair falls upon the red stained stone.
