“Straight Flush, Queen high.” I said, smirking, laying my five Diamonds on the table in front of me. The other ruffians gathered 'round cursed and spat, tossing their losing hands back towards the dealer as I pulled the money towards me, stashing the small pot into a pouch at my side.

“I've had enough of your dumb luck for one night, stranger.” The biggest one said, scooting back from the table and heading towards the bar. The rest of the players spouted words of agreement, heading out of the saloon or to the second floor, or where ever the hell they were off to, leaving just myself and the dealer still sitting.

“Well, guess I'll be off too.” I said, looking over at the dealer. “Not very fun playing poker with just two people, eh?”

The dealer shifted slightly, the cowboy hat on his head angled over his face just far enough that all I could see was his mouth. His eyes stayed ever hidden, just like they had been that entire night. Guy had some skills, though, passing cards out around the table and pulling card tricks occasionally to the applause of the players, almost as if he knew exactly where all his cards would be.

“Oh, I wouldn't be off just yet, partner.” He said, his rugged voice drifting like a tumbleweed across the table as he collected his cards, shuffled them, and raised his hands, the cards nowhere to be seen. “How about one more hand?”
    >> Supachibi 11/01/09(Sun)21:33 No.6528374
Shrugging, I settled back down, reaching into my pouch. “What are the stakes?”

“Not a thing, friend. No money. Just cards.” He drawled, lifting his hat just high enough to reach underneath it. From the bullet hole in the hat, I didn't see anything underneath, but he soon produced another deck of cards. This one appeared somewhat thinner than a standard deck, like it was missing a few, but I paid it no mind.

Spreading them out on the table in front of me, he gestured as if asking me to pick a card.

“Trying to be some two-bit magician?” I asked with a chuckle, leaning forward. “Gonna tell me what card I pick?”

He said nothing, but the mouth underneath that hat grinned.

“Ah, hell.” I said, looking over the cards, before drawing one from the lineup. Turning it over, I laid it down on the table.

“Seven of Spades.” The dealer said, looking at the card.
    >> Supachibi 11/01/09(Sun)21:34 No.6528393
“So now what?” I asked, leaning back in my chair and staring at him. “Gonna shuffle and try to impress me?”

The dealer chuckled, a gravelly, rasping sound. “Not at all. The cards have already been dealt. Now you just need to make a choice.” He said, leaning forward, staring at the card. “Play? Or Fold?”

Glancing down, I gasped at seeing an ornate gun where the card had laid before. A seven-shot revolver, handle made of wood that practically shined like the sun, the barrel a dark metal, almost black, and on the hammer, the number 7, merging into an upside-down spade.

I had heard the rumors on my travels, but this was my first time seeing a Gun in the flesh. It made my old slugtosser seem like a worthless hunk of metal.

“Why me?” I asked, running my fingers over the smooth grip.

“Don't ask me.” The Dealer said. “The Gun chose you. Just as they all do.”

As my hand wrapped around the grip, the Gun almost seemed to hum, the air around it visibly shaking. “Well, in that case, I can hardly turn it down, can I?”

The last I saw of him was his grin before he was gone, as though he had never set foot in the saloon.
    >> Supachibi 11/01/09(Sun)21:35 No.6528402
Quickly, I pulled my slugtosser from its holster inside my jacket, gently sliding the Seven of Spades into it and pulling my jacket closed. Tossing the slugtosser onto the table, I grabbed my coat, tossed a gold coin to the bartender, and threw my coat on as I walked out into the cold night.

I jumped up onto my horse hitched nearby, and gave the reins a quick tug to loosen them. I guided my steed out into the night, heading out of the town, and in no particular direction.

Where was I going? What was I going to do once I got there? I had no idea. But I was sure my partner would know.

    My Seven of Spades.

    My Golden Horizon.

Did we ever decide on rules for this?

I know we were discussing Blackjack and Poker and such.
    >> Anonymous 11/01/09(Sun)22:02 No.6528667
    >>6528530

    Why not both?

Assuming you've got a Gun, Blackjack against people without one of the 54, and Poker against other Card-Holders? Better hands serve you better, and cards of your suit serve you better as well. If you draw your Card's card (as it were) it serves as a Wild in either Blackjack or Poker.

In Blackjack, 21 is equivalent to a natural 20, while busting is equivalent to a natural 1. Some Cards have abilities that let you negate a bust every so often, or let you swap one of your cards for the opponent's.

In Poker, there's no real natural 1, it's just the two hands pitted against each other. Best one wins out, and wounds the other player for, say, the lowest valued card in the hand. Again, some Cards have special abilities that let you swap cards, exchange cards, whatever the players and Dealer come up with.

How does the storytelling go on with Wild Cards? Do the characters draw a Card before playing and does every player get a Gun or just one lucky/unlucky bastard?
    >> Anonymous 11/01/09(Sun)22:15 No.6528757
    >>6528738

Probably all the players get a Card, although I suppose it depends on the DM/Dealer.

A lot of the higher tier cards are often already in play, usually at least the two Jokers and the Aces, often the high Faces as well.
    >> TheLionHearted !HAGYQOveO. 11/01/09(Sun)22:27 No.6528858
I've been thinking about the Red Joker a lot lately. What if it was wielded by some bumbling fool, some saltless coward who had never even held a gun before he came across the dealer?
    >> Anonymous 11/01/09(Sun)22:30 No.6528881
    >>6528858

Well, the Red Joker condemns the holder to a life of anonymity. No one will remember him, and very few will remember his Gun.

The Card might also force him to take out any Gunslinger who 'Busts', or has two many Guns at once, so as to 'Shuffle' them back into play among other people, but that depends on who you ask.

The holder of the Red Joker almost always dies of old age, according to what's been writ about him so far.

Well, the Buffalo Bill arc implied that if someone got a hold of two guns the second one disappeared that night.

Also, the dweeby guy idea just seemed to fit. Who better suited for the life of an obscure gunman than a person who already lived in obscurity?
    >> Anonymous 11/01/09(Sun)22:37 No.6528967
    >>6528923

Depends on who you ask. Some people think that players shouldn't be allowed more than one Gun, some say no more than two, some say as many as you want as long as they don't add up past 21. Nothing's really been set in stone, yet.

    The fifty-fifth Card. The Rules.

    Also known as Shrodinger's Gun.

It is held by the Dealer, and possesses the power to rewrite the rules of reality.

Its bullets are rolled up scraps of paper, with writing on it.

When it fires, the words written on the bullet becomes Truth. And, for all anyone knows, it always has been Truth. Only the Gunmen are immune to this power, and only if they are aware that something is different.

This is the source of the Dealer's many mysterious powers.

And this is all the Dealer will tell anyone.

Not sure, really. Haven't gotten that far, haha.

The name was originally going to be 'Lucky Horizon' or 'Lucky Zenith' or 'Luckbringer' or something, but I felt that was too cliche. Then I remembered how 'golden' was used as a synonym for 'lucky' back in the day, and 'Golden Horizon' just seemed to fit really well. So it's kind of a triple meaning, in that the handle shines like gold, the gun 'knows' where it needs to go, and it's an incredibly lucky weapon.

As far as powers, my best guess at the moment is just a massive dose of what normal Spades get. Lots of trickshooting, ricocheting, etc, but in jaw-dropping amounts.
Similar to Rushuna from Grenadier. Blasting off a guy's armor and weapon from a mile away, firing 6 shots at once to pierce heavy armor by combining the bullet's power, epic-tier reloading skills, and the like.

Or something like that. Again, I hadn't really thought of the gun's powers when I was writing.

My name is Jake, and I’ve got one of the guns. The big ones. The legendary ones. Mine is the Ten of Spades, “Atonement.”

Why this gun chose me, I’ll never know. Atonement is a lawman’s gun, the gun of the righteous. Before, I hated the evil of this world, but never really found the motivation to stop it. I even once walked away when I saw a woman being brutally raped by some punk gang.

Now, though, I have to stop it. I must prevent evil. These guns, they’re not normal guns. Obviously they’re more powerful than regular ones, but there’s something different. Now, if I see something bad going on, my insides burn and my head pounds until I intervene. After I put down the criminal bastards, there’s this high like you wouldn’t ever imagine, even from the crazy shit those wasters sell. Essentially, the gun has me hostage, but I don’t mind.

Now I have the power to destroy the enemies of justice. In my hands is the hammer of the righteous. May whatever lies beyond here have mercy on those who would stop me. I will not.

The man in black walked into the dingy saloon, hand near his hip in case one of the local boys decided to get nasty. He sat down on the bar stool, knocking on the bar to get the 'keep's attention.

    "'Ey there, boy. Whatcha drinkin'?"

"Nothing for me, thanks. I'm just wondering if you saw a weaselly little fellow. Name's Clarkson. He's a pudgy little fellow, little shorter'n me. Baldin' a bit in the back."

"Oh yeah, Clarkson. That little banker from Minnesota? Yeah, he's been working at the local bank. Little shitstain accountant, couldn't tell cooze from a cougar." The barkeep chuckled at his own joke.

"Thanks, pardner," said the man in black, leaving a single coin on the bar.

"Hey feller, info's free! I don't need to be payed for nothin'!" By then the man was gone, so the barkeep pocketed the coin, a look of confusion on his face.
    >> Anonymous 11/02/09(Mon)00:12 No.6530004
It was an uneventful day at the bank, but then again, it almost always was. They rarely got any bank robbers now a days, what with this whole "Gun" legend that was spreading like wildfire. Clarkson sat at his teller's seat, his hands repeatedly rubbing his own personal Card, the 5 of Clubs. Granted, being an accountant wasn't the most threatening persona that a Gunslinger could wield, but Clarkson didn't steal this piece to be part of some ridiculous game, he stole it to get leverage over those he couldn't simply bribe. Nothing said leverage like one of the legendary Guns.

The man in black stepped through the door, his boots clicking satisfyingly off the marble floor.

"Yes, sir, can I help-" Clarkson looked up and instantly paled. The nauseous feeling in his gut meant only one thing: this man was carrying a Card. His hands went to his holster, but his chubby fingers betrayed him. The man in black pulled his gun out of his holster and two-stepped to the window, pointing the small Derringer directly at the banker's head. Clarkson felt a warm stream run down his leg. He let go of his pistol and rose his hands into the air.

The man in black looked him straight in the eyes. "Richards sends his regards." Clarkson felt like he was going to vomit at the mere mention of the name. Francis Richards was the man he had stolen 5 of Clubs from. The accountant closed his eyes, for what he truly believed to be the last time. The man in black cocked back the hammer, and pulled the trigger.
    >> Anonymous 11/02/09(Mon)00:13 No.6530020
The gun made a quiet little click as the hammer hit the empty chamber. Outside, the Church's bell sounded off. It was noon.

"Bang!" said the man in black. He pulled his gun back and laughed, a deep guttural chuckle.

Clarkson opened his eyes, and nearly cried from his relief. "Sir, that was not funny."

The man in black stopped laughing, and reverted to a more serious composure. "Lissen to me, and lissen well. You lied to yer boss and stole from him, and now, he sent me ta kill ya. Now, I'm a man of honor. I think that, in all honestly, even a little shitstain like yerself's got to have a chance at redemption. So, how's about a duel? Town square at noon, three day's time. I reckon my tiny little Card'll be no match fer that baby you've got on yer belt. Whaddaya say?"

Clarkson thought about it for a moment. Why not just kill him here, before he has a chance to react? No, Clarkson thought, he'd probably draw his Gun and blow my head off before then. How can I hope to duel him? I could run away... No, he'd find me, just like he already did... Then, it hit him. "I'll duel you," he says, chunky fingers playing with his shirt button, "if you agree to do something... You're a lot better than I at drawing (and probably shooting) that there Card. So, how's about a bit of a handicap on your part?"
    >> Anonymous 11/02/09(Mon)00:14 No.6530041
The man in black's face perked up. "Whatcha got in mind there, fat boy?"

Clarkson looks him in the eye. "Wear your Gun on the side of your boot. If you're REALLY better than me, you can still win, even with such a big handicap. Why, chances are good I'll still lose. I am, after all, nothing but a city slicker..."

The man in black laughs a bit, that deep, grating chuckle down in his throat. "'Kay. Sounds like a plan, boy... See ya in three days."

With that, he left, black boots clacking on the floor. Clarkson ran home not fifteen minutes after, in order to change his pants and get ready. Later that night, lying in bed, he could hardly sleep. The back of his neck hurt, a deep burning pain that reached down to his very bone. He figured it was probably just nerves. Not only that, but when the man in black pulled him forward, his neck jerked a bit. I'll be fine, he thought, it'll go away. Sure enough it did, after three hours of restlessness.
    >> Anonymous 11/02/09(Mon)00:15 No.6530049
Three days later, Clarkson stood in the town square. In a small town like this one, word travels quick. When someone hears a Gun fight's a'comin, they tend to change their schedules. Clarkson looked at the church clock. 11:56. Would the man in black be late to his own duel? Sure enough, Clarkson heard that damn laugh coming from behind. He spun, the man in black looking him square in the eye. As per the deal, the Gun he wielded was in a holster around his foot. "Ready to do this, pilgrim?" His grating laugh continued.

Tick. Tick. Tick. The silence was palpable. The man in black stood on the east, Clarkson the accountant on the west. 11:57 went by, then 11:58. 11:59... Tick. Tick. Tick. 30 seconds. Tick. Tick. Tick. 15. Tick. Tick. Clarkson wiped a bead of sweat from his fat face, eyes tensed, hand at the ready. Ten seconds, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four...

    Three.

    Two.

    One.

The bell went off, and there was a single, dull thud.

The man in black, Crockett, moved forward to Clarkson, laughing that damned infernal laugh. He looked on the corpse's neck, at the small heart shaped mark burnt into the back of it. He grabbed the Gun and reverently stored it in a wrapped blanket, then one of his horse's saddlebags. "Ya'll can escape for so long," Crockett said, putting a cigarette into his mouth and lighting it. "In the end, though, everybody's on Death Row."

    Hey, folks.

OP of the first thread here. And writefag in just about every damn thread after that, except this one.

I just want to say one thing... from the bottom of my heart. And that's that I love you guys. I love you sick, twisted, crazy-assed bastards. Every one of you. Because without your twisted logic, without your insane creativity, settings like this would never happen.

Anyway, to cut things to the short of it, I'm going to try to put together a .pdf of some of the material - the writing, the details of the world. Maybe some art, if I can get some good-looking stuff together... we've already got one drawfag that's done a character design and another gun design after that, so I know that there's SOME kind of interest in Wild Cards art.

Beyond that, we've got the shell of a system - I can try to flesh that out a bit, with the disclaimer that the system is "still in the beta phase" - and suggestions for how to work the Wild Cards setting into other systems.

And then... well, it's just a matter of checking to make sure that I didn't make any horrible grammatical errors, slapping it on Mediafire, and putting up links here and on 1d4chan.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Possible solution to all of the different versions of so many cards (slash writefaggotry...)
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

I tensed as the card I drew fell to the table. The six of spades. "You got some explaining to do, partn..."

I trailed off as I followed the man's gaze to the table, to a rifle black as pitch. The cards were gone. No, the card was a Card- but not the card I knew.

"What're you trying to pull?" I shouted, grabbing the dealer's collar. "This ain't my brother's Gun!"

Smug bastard, he just chuckled at me. "The man what killed poor Jacob already had a pair of 8's. That makes bust, friend. Jacob's Ebony done went out of play; this here's a new deal.

Now that caught me off guard. I must've let the bastard go- next thing I remember I'm alone, holding a gun three times the size of the Six of Clubs my brother carried, a rifle heavy with despair. Loaded with pain.

The name came a day later. "Anguish..."

    This is now canon.

Now we know what happens if your Cards add up to more than 21 - You lose them, Dealer takes all, and hands them out to new Owners.

The Jokers are preset - they're God cards. You get one, and you're unbeatable, although if you've got Black, you're dead pretty quick anyway, and if you've got Red, your character instantly phases out of reality, forgotten by everyone... so that's strictly in "PLOT DEVICE" territory.

Beyond that, I like the original idea of the Cards reacting differently to every gunslinger that carries them. Maybe have preset names and a unique power for each that stays the same, but let the gun generation still occur.

Alright, I don't think 3 of Hearts is taken, and >>6530360 inspired me, so here goes (note: if it is taken, I'll be happy to change it to a different suit that has an open 3):

I want to tell you a story. Please sit down, I'll order you a drink.

There was a man I used to know named O'Henry. O'Henry was a 65 year old Irishman, a drunk old bastard who'd always have a tall tale to tell. So one day, the red-haired bastard decides to pick a fight with three little lads from out west, probably from Idaho or Iowa or something. These little brats' ages combined weren't even close to O'Henry's, but he was far too drunk to care. He usually was.

All four of them, and myself, we walk outside. The little western bastards all laugh about how they have "real shooting irons" straight from Smythe and Wesson. They probably got them as presents from their rich parents, I muse, and they've probably never even used 'em for combat before now. Even so, they're young, and probably quicker on the draw then 'ole O'Henry. Also, there was no way a man his age could hope to win three duels in a row!

The little brown haired punk looks at O'Henry. "Well old man?" he says in a nasally, upper-crust voice. "Who's first?"

"I'll take ya all on at once, ya greasy little sods!" His voice, it's starting to slur a bit around the edges. He doesn't seem to notice.

The boys crack out laughing. "Riiiiight," says the black haired one. I want to punch this little spitfuck in his dumb face, but I resist the urge. I pull on O'Henry's arm.

"You sure you want to go through with this, old man?"

He looks at me with a grin. "Trust me, boy. I got a little present from a stranger last night, during a poker game. Nice guy. You'll like it, I promise."

I walk back, and the four of 'em, they take positions. Old man O'Henry on one side, the little spitfucks from Idaho or some shit on the other. They wait for the bell.

It goes off. O'Henry, he pulls out the weirdest fucking gun I ever saw. Three barrels, and one trigger. He pulls it, and three bangs echo out. Before the little spoiled brats can even try to pull their guns out, they're already dead, each with a bullet right through the skull.

"How'd you..." I stammer, my breath taken away.

He laughs. "Little Cerberus 'ere, me boy. Three a' Hearts. I don't even gotta aim, she does all da aimin fer me, and even hits two other targets. Pretty handy for a old sod like meself, eh, boy?" He laughs and pulls me back in, and we drink for the rest of the night.

I bring this up because some bastard in black killed my friend a while back. From what I gather his name is Crockett. All I know about him is he clicked the barrel of an empty Derringer at his head, and what he told O'Henry right after that, three days before the old bastard's death:
"The Iowa family sends their regards."

Well, the nice thing about legends is that they're mutable too. Also I figure that famous tales of the Aces doesn't mean that current configurations of Aces are any less powerful or awesome, just that they haven't been made legends yet (prolly due to being so recent instead of older tales).

But that's a straight-up criminal thing to do to a LeMat. Especially since they were made when most steampunk settings take place anyways.

To relate it to this thread, though, a LeMat would be perfect for one of the tens; 9-shot cylinder (.42 cal) with a .63 cal shotgun barrel underneath. /k/ rant out.

O'Bannion sat in his chair; hard oak and soft leather. A gentleman's throne. In it he held power. The fate of men and women passed through his hands, molded and destroyed how and when he saw fit. He was powerful. Untouchable. It bored him greatly.

Land, silver, gold, even a few hundred miles of premium track; it was all well and good, but it had been his father's. Handed down through death. Granted. Not earned.

He had had his fun. Heady days of wasted youth. And then the days began to slow. The years grew younger. He'd traded away the dice and cards and booze for a fountain pen and accounting ledgers. Well, not entirely. But he no longer had that fire inside of him.

Moneylending, levies, taxes; import and export, fair trade, capitalism; land deals, mergers, buy outs. He earned his wealth. Outperformed his father several times over. He even had a son that he'd pass it all on to. Someday, when he died in his sleep for pneumonia or some such nonsense.

Nonsense, for Dale O'Bannion had other plans. And the man in front of him would see to it that they came into fruition.

So, this is a setting where the East has no control over the West? Does that mean that there are still Natives? Perhaps some Cherokee nation or something? And what about the Chinese? You'd think there would be some effort by them to colonize where they could. Also, do those folks back East or in any other part of the world have Cards? Or at least something similar? Or are the Cards a purely American West thing?

Just trying to expand the amount of things you can shoot in this setting. Gun fights are great, but what about some variety? Bandits who've kidnapped a Mad Gunsmiths that have forced him to put together bizarre contraptions for them? Injuns on horseback looking to scalp you? Crazy Chinamen with their own personal railway trying to take over the area? The guys back East bringing in artillery and cavalry and trying to take the West? Foreign Devils with their own supernatural weaponry that can match the 54 or even some Federal Agents from back East who have some supernatural backing of their own?

Natives are everywhere that the city-states aren't, more or less. A few tribes were wiped out, but because of the UCSA's hard and fast "50-Mile" rule, a rule that was designed to make damn sure that a man's voice could be heard by those governing him, there's a lot less sprawl to deal with. There is a tribal city-state of sorts near California, in the Mojave... As for the Chinese, they're pretty damn populous near the City-State of Los Angeles.

Yes, there are Guns out east, but for some reason, they tend to migrate westward. Usually. There have been a few Games that have moved back towards the Atlantic, but those are few and far between. One memorable one ended in a massive war between self-appointed lawmen and the varied gangs of New York... a battle that ended with the demolition of six city blocks.

"The bank manager had a fit when I told him I was closing the account." O'Bannion grinned his Irish grin, full of richness and swagger. Honest to the core. Comforting, almost.

"I'm quite sure that he did." The man in black held his glass carefully, seeming to weigh it between his fingertips.

"But then again, I own the bank, so it wasn't as if he had any say in the matter." The smile of a child. A young man, at least. It betrayed his aged appearance. "We'll leave tomorrow." It was less a question than a statement of fact. "You've learned of a destination?"

"I have one or two ideas. Rumors mostly. Speculation." He took a sip. His lips, like his fingers, dancing around the rim. "But isn't that how it always is?"

O'Bannion guessed that it was. He, like most, knew about them. That is to say he'd hear the stories as they passed through town. Even spoke to a few men who'd claimed to see a few. Most were liars. This man though, Crockett, he was different. "Can I see yours?"

Cold eyes. Glassy and smooth. They watched him. Two windows into a moonless night. Unflinching. They reminded him of an animals. "You sure?"

    He was.

The image I got is that, yeah, most of North America has reverted to a very Wild West style of living, with City-States.

As for the fate of the American Indian, I haven't the foggiest idea what they're up to. I assume they're about and they still cause a ruckus, but they're currently not a major focus. Perhaps that's a splatbook for the future?

That's like saying that having any other supernaturals in the WoD cheapens the mystique of the Vampires. Having other supernatural elements in the world could be good if they are handled with care and don't intersect too frequently with the Cards.

The setting sounds like it could do well with some Curse of the Pyramids style action. Cursed treasures from under the sands of Egypt. Or maybe some Dark Continent action. Ancient stone cities in dark jungles, wild savages and heathen gods.

That is a very good point... That said, it would require a LOT of care. At the end of the day this is a setting that begs for "low-magic", so it would need to be done carefully.

Having the occasional, very rare sorcerer: Okay, cool, could add needed variety.

Having another set of weapons with mystical properties: OW MY BRAIN HURTS FROM THE STUPID

    Those are just examples.

On the one hand, I don't think it'd be a bad idea to expand the lore to include more than just North America as a primary focus. There's a lot of world out there, most of it at least found by this point, and neglecting it (especially in light of all of the changes brought on in this timeline) would be remiss.

On the other hand, the setting is really focused on the Cards and the Game, which is why everything's all Wild West focused. The Game, and the connection and draw of the Cards to one another, somewhat prevents the focus from going anywhere else easily.

Crockett reached with his leather gloved fingers, slipped away, out of sight. O'Bannion waited with bated breath, his teeth tight on his bottom lip. A boy watching his first love undress. There was a mystery to it. An anticipation that was palpable. An oppressive air that seemed to crush him from all sides.

Duke stood in the corner of the office, unheard all the while. He made a noise and opened his jacket, reaching for his Smythe. Crockett smiled and laughed. "Don't worry there, Cowboy." He pulled his hand free, a small derringer within his grasp. "Look," he opened the breach, revealing to the chaperone two empty chambers. "Not even loaded."

Duke relaxed. Letting his iron fall back in its holster.

Crockett smiled still. An unsettling smile. O'Bannion stared in wonder. "That's really a Card?"

    "You bet."

"Astounding." He leaned forward, his elbows on the desk, to get a better look. "What does it do?"

"Do?" He laughed. A jackal's laugh. Sharp. "It kills people." He steadied the pocket pistol at the Irishman's forehead, clicked the trigger, and said, "Bang."

    "Ha, of course."

    "Mr. O'Bannion?"

    "Hrm? Yes?"

    "My money."

    "Sorry."

The boy stood over me, as I lay in the mud, gasping for breath.

He had seemed almost nice, when he came into town, walking in during a helluva thunderstorm, with a tale of a wagon train hit by redskins. Young, not quite a man by the reckoning of most, with a dark coat pasted to his pale skin. He had seemed lost and alone and cold, and we took pity on him, gave him a place to stay for a while.

"I mean, I'm really sorry." He said, and I looked up at him, and the storm clouds behind him. He'd been here two days, and it hadn't stopped raining. The rain made it hard to judge, but I think he was crying.

I felt like crying myself. I was lying in the mud, a wound in my gut bleeding out into the street, with the burnt-out ruin of my entire home around me.

This brings up the question of "what is the Game?". Or should I say, what are the players trying to do in this setting? Most card games are about gambling and the acquisition of wealth. That should probably be one of the major facets of the game. The game can't be all Gunslingers fighting Gunslingers as that would get boring.

Money, rights to gold and jewel mines, rights to oil fields, getting into the business of making guns, trading valuable horse breeding secrets with Arabs, securing some of the more advanced mechanical and chemical secrets of the far Easst from some Opium-peddling warlord Chinaman, going on expeditions to the untamed corners of the world for ancient artifacts, learning esoteric secrets and lore from some Hatian Voodoo Priest in New Orleans. All should be entirely viable means of attaining the wealth, power and fame that are the player goals of such a setting.

He'd slept in a room over at the Westerner's place. I think maybe Mary had been trying to get him to take a liking to her oldest, Beth, but now I guess I'd never know.

The boy had risen the next day, and shot the whole family dead. Bullets flew from his Gun, and tore into them as they went about their daily chores. The bullets went through walls and doors, and anything they touched, burned.

Despite the rain, and the damp, and the efforts of anyone who spent time trying to stop the burning rather than runnin', the house burned. And then he shot up the place next door. House to house he went, his black coat thrown up by the wind, and behind him, a trail of burning lives.

He shot up the general store, igniting a barrel of gunpowder, which fueled the flames of the town. By then, people knew there was a fire, and many ran to help. They died, burning, in the street.

That's what confounded me most. Of all the town, I wasn't burning. Dying, yes. With a boy with an honest-to-god Gun above me.

I could see the brand burning on it, a "J" above a Spade, and now that I was looking, the gun was shaking in the boy's hand. He'd killed an entire town, torn out our hopes and dreams, and burned them to the mud, and the boy was crying.

"I-I-'m really sorry," he stammered. "I don't know why you're still alive, a-and I wish I could tell you WHY I had to do this." His hand came up, and gestured at the still-smoldering embers of my home.

"I-It's the Gun. It...makes me do things. Bad things, Terrible things. Things so god-awful I have to keep goin' until I pass out, else I can't sleep." I was certain he was cryin' now, the tears streaking the soot under his eyes. "Sometimes, I tell myself it's a lesson. That you all did SOMETHING, and I'm punishing you. Or, or, maybe, it's so people hear about this town, and it makes them be nicer. But, the truth is, I don't know. I think, maybe, this Gun's just evil."

He managed a shaky smile. "You know what they say, it's an Ill Wind..."

"The Game" is a peculiar thing. Everyone who has a Card has their own reason for carrying it. For some it's greed, for others hatred or vengeance, and some have a greater goal in mind, one for which the Card is just a way to accomplish it. And somehow - despite all odds to the contrary - the wielders of the Cards manage to come into conflict with other Card-carrying gunslingers.

Now, as another interpretation, once in a great while there may be a more literal Game, a conflict that the Dealer himself sets up, replete with a prize at the end - the winners get to keep their Cards, or they can turn them in for a favor from the Dealer. Exactly. You are taking a player, putting him in a very lawless setting and having a mysterious force give him power beyond that of mortal men. You then have to deal with the question of "Now What?"

Having all the players be little pawns in the unknowable games of some supernatural force that forces them to come into conflict with other people given the same kind of power is not that good for a game. Its pretty much a license to "Just as Planned" and railroad all they like.

The game should be about what people now do with this power they have been given. Which almost always is Get More Power for whatever reason. Gunslingers shouldn't come into conflict with one another because some supernatural force is guiding them to it, but because people who have power float to the top and people who want power get into conflict with other people who have power. All of this fighting and robbing and enterprise for fame and fortune should benefit this other force that gave them the power in some way though.

That's that for now. I had noticed that in none of the stories I saw was a Jack mentioned, and wanted to try my hand at it.

I also wanted to try a Gunslinger who didn't know his own motivations, and was faced with a Gun that had a purpose. Since the Jack of Spades is one of the One-Eyed Jacks, which are frequently wild cards, I wanted to dabble in a more supernatural level of power, like the Jokers and Aces.
I also learned that the Page of Swords, the tarot equivalent, is a card representing challenges you have to overcome to a new beginning.

This is the kind of Gunslinger that would do well as an NPC in the world, as someone weaker than their gun, who either has to be taken down by the party, or maybe built into a force for good.
Or, for a more sinister DM, may he is doing good, and represents the necessary evil one must commit.

Golden Horizon is a Spade, and thus capable of one-in-million shots. Whenever you get that crazy idea, "Bounce it off the vault door..", "Right down the barrel, nobody even have to die..." it makes these shots possible.

But the 6 and 8 of spades do as well, and the 8 holds more ammo typically.

No, to get the most out of Golden Horizon, you loud just one shot; then spin the cylinder. If the hammer should fall on a round, serendipity is sure to follow. If regular shots are one-in-a-million, then this shot is once in star's life.

The Seven guns are special, because you can hold one for each suit save one and not bust. Doing so is called a Jackpot, and rumors say that such guns held in congress have peculiar potency.

Ever heard of the Queen of Hearts?

The Bloody Queen, they call 'er. She's a pistol, a pretty little thing, but once she's drawn, she ain't going back in 'er holster until she's drawn blood from every damn living thing in sight, and that includes her wielder— and once she's made you bleed, you ain't gonna stop until you run dry. They say she's done in many a 'slinger who thought they could handle her.

But now, you've heard of those massacres happened north of here, in the Gultch? I met a guy who survived. Said in the middle o' it all, was one man, covered in blood, holding up a nice little pistol, red-handled with a big ol' heart on the side. Guy was just standing there, bleedin' like noone's business, shooting everything that moved and some things that wern't; and once he heard his laugh he couldn't do nothing but run...

Hey, all I'm sayin' is, maybe the Queen's finally found her mate....

It's not. The extra power of the guns is to balance that you can only ever use two at a time. Basically, since you've got 7 of your "potential" wasted at any time, it makes the guns better so that two Gunslingers at 21 are equal, even though one can't wield all his guns.

Of course, it only applies to sevens for flavor reasons.
    >> Anonymous 11/02/09(Mon)03:05 No.6531964
    >>6531938
Of course, you could always have one of the sevens be a diamond. No one has ever seen it drawn, because it's so fast that it's back in the holster before the shots have time to echo. However, I think that a gun like that works better as a lower number.

Other magical things come off as very...alien.

Best example I can come up with is that Naruto movie where they were invaded by knights. Not a very good movie, but still.

Magic is very very rare. Taking an artifact out of its homeland is equivalent to, say, taking one of the Cards out of America. Good luck trying.

But, there have been rumors. With the chaos around the world, one can't be sure, but they say that back in Europe, legendary weapons like Excalibur, Durandal and Gae Bolg have resurfaced, and mythical beasts, like pheonixes and dragons, have been sighted in Asia...

“It’s gonna be a lot sadder if I have to dirty up that pretty little face o’ yours. Just hand over the Gun and run along.” He said, and started to grip his gun tighter.

“You shouldn’t try and shoot me mister. When people do, they die. Dying’s sad…and it’s already too sad of a world. Mommy gave me this when she died…to protect me from all the sadness in the world.” I swear I saw a tear come to her eye as she said this.

“On three boys,” he said as he adjusted his aim lower, “Here’s a tip for next time kid, talk less, you’ll live longer…three!”

“Please mommy…” she started to say, gripping the small legend to her chest.

I swear those gunshots rang through the whole little town. Rang til’ I reckon all their chambers were empty. I was frozen in place, waiting for the smoke to clear.

“It looks like it won’t be that sad of a day after all.”

As the smoke cleared I saw a sight to behold. The clouds started to part and the sun shone through those four men like they were swiss cheese. Six holes in each, clear as day…their own bullets too I reckon by the size of the holes. The girl said a prayer for the four unlucky souls and then started to walk by me on her way out of town.

“That’s one lucky Card you got there kid, I hold tight to that if I were you.”

“I will mister, thanks!” she smiled as the sun shown down even brighter, “The clouds are going away, so I’ll be going now.”

“Just remember kid, every cloud has a silver lining.”

“Silver…Lining…” she mused as she looked down at the small object in her hands, the water still dripping out of the barrel, “Thanks a bunch mister! It’s a pretty name!” With newfound happiness she skipped out of town, a bright day still ahead of her.

The drunken man stood up from his chair and gazed around the near empty bar.

“It’s closing time James,” said Jim, polishing up a mug from the counter, “I think I’ve heard enough stories for one day.”

“Alright, alright,” said James as he stumbled out of the bar, “I’ll see you tomorrow Jim.”

How to hold more than 21 and not go bust:

Hold a poker hand. Something like three of the same card, or four, or a straight, or royal flush...That'll let you keep 'em. How do you do it without losin' them? Boy, you've never...Well, you can hold onto more than 21 for precisely thirty minutes before they all go. That's how. There have been legends recently about a foursome, together each a royal flush of every suit. Not sure what got 'em in the end.

Three sevens, however, is special. If you hold three of the four, you get the missing Card's power. If you hold four, then...Well, nobody to date's done that.

Because those who search for power will rarely be content with one Gun, and will desire more.

Some will want more simply for the ability to kill in many ways.

Some will want to prevent others from getting them.

Whatever the reason, people want to claim more than one Gun. Now, the thing to keep in mind is that there are tens of millions, maybe even hundreds of millions, of people in North America, and out of them there are only 54 Gunslingers at most. Getting multiple Guns is quite the feat. But Gunslingers are somehow drawn to other Gunslingers, by fate or by choice, it matters not. And so the issue of multiple Gunwielding comes up, and that is why the Bust rule is in place. It's just a way to deal with an issue that may/will come up in campaigns (and honestly, it creates an interesting question pertaining to why Gunslingers can Bust at all).

But these are suggestions. You can take some or all or none of the fluff and stuff of Wild Cards for your campaigning, and change things as you see fit for your personal use.

Howdy, name's Jacob. Lemme tell ya about this man I knew, was a rough and dirty guy by the name of Alexander Fitch. We had been good buddies for a while back growin' up, and then one day he just up and disappeared. Then suddenly, five years later, he rolls into town without warnin' and with a pretty new firearm slung across his back to boot.

I had been the manager of the saloon at that point so naturally he had simply run into me by stoppin' in for a drink. We shared stories, though most of mine were pretty borin' compared to the grisly messes he had gotten himself into in his absence, but he didn't exactly sound too horribly proud of himself either.

It was after this that he had some particularly bad news to share: A group of bandits that had been terrorizing the nearby towns was headed this way. When I spoke up about telling the sheriff, Alex just laughed and told me it was nothin' I should worry myself with. When I asked him why the hell not, he told me to meet him at the edge of town the next day around noon and he'd show me.

Both curious as to what the hell he meant and fearin' for my own skin, I decided to pack my father's old slugthrower for when I met him on the outskirts, just in case. When I walked up with the revolver slung around my hip, Alex just laughed and told me it really wasn't neccessary. Needless to say I was even more confused than before.

We walked out of town for a bit, the plains around us humming with it's usual life. After we got maybe a couple hundred paces out of town, Alex stopped, unslung the firearm from his back, and inspected it for a second. I did as well: it was a single-barrel shotgun, with a polished silver barrel and a dark stained wooden stock. He snapped it open, reached into his pocket, pulled out a single shell, and jammed it into the barrel.
    >> Anonymous 11/02/09(Mon)04:26 No.6532512
    >>6532510

Then I heard it. Hoofbeats echoing from down the road. Whoopin' and hollerin' from a whole gang of men, and a few gunshots here and there when they fired into the sky. Honestly, I was scared shitless. But Alex? No, Alex just stood there calm as all hell as he raised the gun to his shoulder and braced himself.

"Alex, you can't seriously hope to take on all of them by yourself! There's at least a dozen of them!"

"Jacob, ya might want to cover your ears."

"Wha-" I never finished my sentence. The trigger clicked under Alex's finger, and a sound like that of a whole shed of dynamite exploding rang from the barrel. The shockwave from the shot knocked me flat on my ass and kicked up enough dust that i had to cover my eyes.

When the dust settled, my ears were still ringing, but I'll never forget what I saw. The dozen or so men who had been maybe twenty paces away from us a few seconds before now lied in a giant grisly mess, horses and all, what was left of them strewn about the road.

And then there was Alex. Alex, standing there with his shotgun sitting on his shoulder, glinting in the sunlight. Printed clearly on the barrel was a small number nine with a club underneath it. "Sweet Justice" he had called it, just before he disappeared without a word the following night, just like he had five years ago.

To have been so close to one of the legendary 54, one of the Cards, it's a changing experience to say the least. But I will tell you one thing: I hope to sweet God I never have to see another one again in my life.

Generally, for Hands, you follow poker hand rankings. For mutltiple-Gun-ownership, that's when it's blackjack.

So if they're suited, sure thing they'll be more powerful together than apart. And the more of their suit they bring together into a posse, the more powerful they'll all become. Straights and -of -a-kinds also build this way.

So you're saying that if you have two guys with a king and a ten, you might as well have one guy dual-wield them since one guy with a king and a ten will have an advantage over two guys with a king and a ten, since I'm assuming a blackjack hand of 20 will be greater than a poker hand of king high.
And how do you compare blackjack hands with poker hands?

A poker hand of king high is not really a hand, it's just high card. Poker hands start at two pair and go up from there. And yes, from a min/max standpoint, it is more powerful to have one guy with two guns than two guys with one gun each usually.

I don't think a comparative power analysis has been done on how that all works out, however. Generally, the power levels for the Guns has yet to be set in stone- their power relative to one another is obvious, but how powerful is a Deuce that it's better than a regular gun, but less powerful than a Seven?

Take the Two of Hearts (Death Row), though. It's an extremely powerful weapon- doesn't take ammo, but will kill anyone after three days unless the current wielder is killed first. That's a mighty fine assassination weapon, and yet that's just a Deuce. How powerful must the Ace be, then, to best it by 12 ranks?

The power levels aren't set. They may be, or they may be up to the discretion of the GM for their game. Part of it might depend on how Gun creation goes. I'unno.

"You been cheatin' us you little shit! Who gets two royal flushes in one game? Gives us back what you say you've won and maybe we won't cut your nuts off!"

The skinny stranger held up his hands as one of the other men stood and grabbed him by his collar.

"Honestly, It's just dumb luck! I wasn't pulling cards or nothin'!" The weasly man whimpered as his feet were lost to the ground. His duster fluttered and I caught a glimps of the handle of a beautiful four-barrel piece. The hammers were in the shape of fours.

"Get out of here, you cowpie! We're takin' it back!" The man buttonholing the stranger put him back on his feet and turned him around.

By this time all four of the cheated men were standing, and one of them shoved him towards the door. The skinny man stumbled and turned in the doorway.

"You can't do that! I won that!"

"Won it, you say? Let's see how much you've won when you're dead! Duel us! Right now! The street!"

The four marched forward, and the youngster, no more than a teenager by the look of it, turned white, stepping back a few steps.

The boys eyes were fixed the guns at the waists of his assailants. As they came through the doorway single file, the foremost began pulling his gun. As soon as it was level, so was the boys.

There was lightning, then a crack, between the two.
