    681 KB Drama Cards Anonymous 11/08/09(Sun)22:37 No.6626467
Drama cards are something I've been putting together for my players; essentially, I'll be giving out these cards are awards for particularly good roleplaying, writing up a story log, a really cool moment in combat, etc. The cards will have all manner of different benefits from plot to combat elements.

I'm almost done with the set, and, I'll happily upload it for anyone that's interested in using them - I have been designing them for 4E (self-serving there, as I'm running a 4E game) but I do want to come up with a version of the cards that are system-less.

I'm a few cards short of a set, and am eager for any ideas you guys might want to throw my way; I want to have a total of 144 cards, for printing purposes, and I think I'm at 140 at the moment. So, any ideas you want to throw at me, I'd appreciate it.
    >> Anonymous 11/08/09(Sun)22:47 No.6626571
These look fun, and I'm also running 4E. I've always liked adding a cinematic/drama element to the game and your sample looks good.

    On Your Marks...

Change a Combat encounter into chase encounter, where you have to catch some (or all) of the still living opponents to succeed. You have to prevent them from moving for at least one round, or be flanked for them to count as "Caught".

(Honestly, I just wanted someone to be able to say "I play the Race card")

Danke - honestly it's just proofreading, 1 or 2 more cards, and the art I need to put together at this point, so, probably early next week. I want to do more "sets" that are a bit more campaign specific - stuff that can go down in cities, in dungeons, etc.

I assure you they'll be uploaded the moment I finish - I don't like the idea of putting up an unfinished set of cards.

They do end up looking pretty slick printed out, too, by the way, double sided with the card backs on 110lb. card stock - although I'd love to find something a bit more substantial to print them on.

Make it a joker like effect.

When you play this card, you may draw the top 2d4 cards from the Drama Deck and pick one to play on behalf of the PCs, the DM then chooses one you did not pick and plays it on behalf of the NPCs. The drama deck is then shuffled.

First, add "SCIENCE!!!" after Drama - Subplot.

    Then... Hm.

"Immediately end any one encounter (At DM's discretion). A new combat encounter will begin unless the PCs succeed a series of Arcana skill challenges."

Basically, my idea is that the PCs inadvertently trigger SOMETHING, and are going to be attacked by Mad Science Experiments (Be they Flesh Golems, swarms of medium-sized shock lizards, carniverous turnips, etc), unless they manage to undo whatever they did wrong.

Like a "Get Out of Jail At Some Potentially High Cost" card.

Godspeed good anonymous. I've been thinking of applying a similar mechanic in my 4e game based on a thread I read awhile ago about using a Tarot deck, or other ancient divination method, while playing to give characters some cool plot control powers.

While we are on the subject of cool plot control powers- what other games feature this kind of player-plot control?

I believe oWoD Wraith allowed other players at the table to take over as your character's "evil twin" in certain circumstances when you botched certain rolls.

Everyone should read up on 7th Sea Advantages and Hubrises- it's one of the best implementations of plot control/motivation interactive role-playing I've ever seen.

Actually went with that kind of idea, although, and this is true of all the cards (well, maybe not yet, but, before I put them out) there should be at least some benefit to the player, perhaps at a level of risk.

In this case, given the options the other cards give, things could go horribly fucking wrong.

is 3 cards just way too many to start throwing around? Is there some limit on how long people can "hold" cards and on how many can be played in a certain time?

The only problem I forsee here is that this is the kinda card players will toss when a huge gamble is their only hope, and since this card can also go horribly wrong, it could make a bad situation even more horrible. Though, if you are a good DM and always have a "how is this going to work out even if they fuck up horribly" contingency plan, that shouldn't be a problem.

Well, in my game, I don't intend on there being a limit; yes, things can get completely out of control very quickly with these cards, but I'm also coming up with a reward system where you can trade in the cards for those newfangled "boons" in 4e (I'll post that system too, but, that's a ways off). So, players are inclined to keep cards.

In the past, with primitive versions of drama cards, I've given XP rewards for trading in cards, so, there's incentive to get the cards out of the player's hands. But, one thing I'm not doing, with these cards, is setting hard rules on how other DMs should use them. The "copper, silver, gold, platinum" represents rarity in my game, sure, but, they're ultimately arbitrary - same with the Drama subtypes - meta, subplot, etc. No real rules exist for what these subtypes are for, except for you to easily sort out the type of cards you don't want in your deck.

Ah, and for any of the cards that use numerics - I split them up into heroic/paragon/epic.

Hm, I like your idea OP, even though it strikes me as a bit strange. I think they would be great for a one-shot or short string of quests, but it seems like they'd cause a lot of complications for a DM with a whole campaign and series of events planned out. Regardless, I'd love to try them out just to see how it goes with my players, it's definitely very original.

    Dear OP,

These are awesome, and the effort you put into them shows.

However, just like with the Touhou Power Cards, they are at a disappointingly small resolution. This makes printing them a bitch, because the text is raster, just like the rest of the image, and will therefore blur (again, most noticeable when printing). Furthermore, when scaled, your cards become 2.5" x 3.44", which is almost, but ever-so-slightly NOT a width of 3.5".

I have started re-making the Touhou Power Cards at a suitably large resolution, which should make the printed cards look better.

Regardless of the flaws, I will print out and use these posthaste, and if it were an actual product would probably buy them. I just wish they were at a larger resolution.

Hack and Slash/etc.-guy here, glad you enjoyed! I have a number of other ideas I'm coming up with; your concept is really inspiring, OP. Here's another one I just thought of:

Does OP have an e-mail address I can send ideas to? I'll be turning in for the night shortly, but I still have ideas to contribute.

I'm trying to think of good, interesting Copper ideas for you. They may be higher rarity, who knows.

    Where Everyone Knows Your Name

You may invent a tavern, inn, or similar. If you have been to the city, it is now an old haunt of yours, and if you have not, you are quickly accepted there. In addition to new friends, you gain a +1/3/5 bonus to Gather Information checks there.

I Didn't Know I Had it In Me

The next time you spend an encounter power, you may instead use a martial power of the next lowest level (if it is a first level power, you may replace it with an at-will). Use your standard bonuses to attack and damage.

    Mopping Up

Play this card only when all enemies are either defeated, bloodied, or minions, and none are Elites or Solos. The combat flash-forwards to the end: the PCs are victorious with no further loss of hit points or expended abilities.

    Not Our Jurisdiction

The next time you flee from an encounter, the enemies do not pursue you beyond the boundary of the room if in a dungeon, or a similar distance if elsewhere (DM's discretion). The enemies may chase normally if engaged a second time, but do not actively seek out the PCs.

Sounds interesting. But I don't think it would work as a Drama Card. It's more like a regular Bluff check.
I see those Drama Cards as a player's resource to bring a turn of events to an encouter (battle or social). Maybe even in ways unpredictable to the DM.

In our last thread, a few days ago, OP said those cards where handed to players only after accomplishing important deeds or feats.

Better cards (golden and so on) are gainet through gameplay, and there's no limit to the number of those you can have at once. But they should be rare, players need to be worthy of them.

    Nice thread, nice idea.

I'm not home, so, no pics for now. Only a single idea:

    Strike a Pose

After achieving a success in a fisic skill, or after droping an enemy below 0HP (or defeating it in any other way), your character may turn around, and face his enemies with a dark and grim face, or a daunting smile. This will grant him +4 in his next Intimidation or Diplomacy check.

    But that's just another mask...

After capturing (not killing) the villain, you can present a twisting plot, and then state that the villain is, in fact, wearing a mask, or any other kind of magical or non-magical disguise. Said disguise is dispelled/removed, and the DM should alter the campaign to fit the new plot.
    (party discretion)
    >> Anonymous 11/09/09(Mon)18:37 No.6637773
    YOU'RE FIGHTING WHO NOW?

At the DMs discretion, a non-diplomatic encounter is revealed to actually be the antagonist manipulating one or more of his enemies into fighting the PCs. The PCs may or may not gain an ally, depending on the circumstances.

    AREN'T YOU...

An enemy in a random combat encounter has some connection to the past of the PC who played this card. If this card is played by the DM, they may randomly select a PC, or a player may discard a Drama card to be affected.

I would love to see how well these worked in a campaign... I imagine some of them could be a little unbalancing.

Instead of combat advantages and whatnot, I'd like to see cards that focus on encouraging roleplay. Is there a card for making a newly introduced NPC have a "history" with the player, perhaps allowing for a flashback sequence? Any romantic entanglement cards?

    Evening.

I'm going to make an effort to push out these cards this evening/early morning, though I think I want to consider them in beta status - still I think they're in good enough shape now to use.

I did leave some mechanics-based cards in, simply because I planned, personally, to use them as "action" type cards for my group; the simplest solution in regards to those that want to keep it mostly RP stuff? Just take those cards out - there's a ton of RP/plot only stuff.

Looking forward to the results, hopefully I'll catch the thread.

Failing that, I'll monitor http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Drama_Cards and suptg.

YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE
Use this card when discovered somewhere you aren't supposed to be. Your discoverer also is not supposed to be there.

OP, are you considering taking orders? Or, more wisely, pre-orders?

    >They do end up looking pretty slick printed out, too, by the way, double sided with the card backs on 110lb. card stock - although I'd love to find something a bit more substantial to print them on.

I used 80# signature colors white for the touhou cards. The paper is slightly glossy and sturdy enough to use as cards if you print double-sided.

I'll personally see if I can get a deal on 'em, but, no promises; I think I was going to broach the subject of printing them soon.

Oh, and, I'm just doing one last proof-reading of the cards, now, and then I'll begin to convert them to PDF and find a place to upload 'em.

Please OP do not upload just a pdf. Can you upload the template or the .MSE files that you used? The idea is cool, but i'd like to be able to create custom ones.

I'll upload the data files separately, however; I did alter some of the core Magic files, so, if you have custom M:tG cards, this WILL screw them up.

    Presenting: Drama Cards

Drama cards are a set of printable cards that you, as a DM, can introduce into your game as a reward for your players; give them out as a reward for your players providing you with a character history, story log, or if they go above and beyond with their in-game actions, do something amazing/funny in-game, or just outright bribe you.

This set of cards contains 180 different cards; some with mechanical effects, many with, appropriately enough, dramatic effects that may change the course of actions of an NPC, a monster, the enviroment or the story as a whole. The cards are sorted into different "values" - copper, silver, gold and platinum; generally reflecting how rarely you should award these cards. For example, in my campaign, I intend on printing them out in a ratio of 8:4:2:1, so that the copper cards show up a great deal more often. Whatever the case, I recommend you only use these cards if you're confident as a DM.

The cards are also sorted by type of action - Adventure, Assist, Attack, Combat, Defense, Movement, Recovery, Subplot and Meta; these categories are pretty self-explanatory, and their purposes for drama cards are deliberately vague; it's just another means to allow you to sort through cards you may or may not want your players to have access to, or perhaps only use in certain situations.

    >>6644617
Using a card itself, in-game, takes no action, although there are cards that can only be used under special circumstances. There is no limit to how many cards a player may have, or how many a player may use at any given time; however, once again, this is just how I'm using them; you can limit a player to a set "hand" of cards, forcing them to discard a card if they want a new one, you may limit how many can be used at once, or when they can be used. Find the way they best suit your campaign, and use them as you see fit.

You can download the cards here: http://rapidshare.com/files/304900460/Drama_Cards__Beta_.rar.html
You can download the MSE data files here (I made alterations to the Magic data files, however, so, if you have custom M:tG cards, this WILL screw them up): http://rapidshare.com/files/304901113/Drama_Cards_MSE_Files.rar.htm

Hoping I can get another place to host them, as, well, rapidshare.

If you use the cards in your game, I would absolutely love to see them in play; send me any pictures of the cards in action to dramacards@gmail.com.

And now for my damning moment of self-interest - if you liked these cards, at least take some time to look at the campaign I'm currently running, S.P.I.R.E.: Sharn Private Investigation and Risk Elimination (http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/spire4e); at most, if you're feeling particularly charitable, and want to donate some of your hard earned money to a poor DM, send me an email to the above address, and I'll happily provide you with the means (artists welcome, too).

And one final note: these cards are in, for the lack of a better term, a beta - I wanted to get these cards out to you, but, there's bound to be glaring grammatical errors and other problems; if you find them, let me know, I'll be sure to fix 'em up for the next "release". And keep the ideas coming; you guys really pushed this idea to the edge, and I want to keep going.

Yeah, I caught that the instant I finished uploading them. Dammit.

And yes, I used lots of ideas you guys gave me. I did deliberately put some more ambiguous (read: boring) names on them, just so they can fit better into any given campaign.

You guys are bros for helping me out on this, though.

Thanks for uploading, OP. I'll definitely try to get my group to give this a go next time we meet up for the holidays. Only problem now is getting my hands on some quality paper to print this on. I'll be sure to shoot you an e-mail to tell you how it went, as well as contribute any more ideas I might have.
