    Hello, /tg/.

In a few days, I will be starting a campaign with my regular group. This campaign will be using the d20 Modern system; while I'm seasoned in its use, it'll be the first time for many of my players playing the system.

But enough about my players; what does /tg/ think of the Villains which will be featured in my post-modern, satirical, cyberdark/grimpunk world?

Pic related. They are the powers behind the people behind the metaphorical throne, and the PCs are gonna rain hellfire and brimstone on them, bringing their worlds crashing down.

That is cool and you should feel cool. You should have theme competing with each other, and hiring the PCs as mercenaries in their Price Wars.

For mooks, include Nike street gangs that will knife you if you're wearing Adidas. Perhaps a cataclysmic riot could ensue when the populace at large finds out that Coke and Pepsi are identical in every way except the packet.

(IRL they're not, of course, but most people can't tell the difference anyway.)

    OP here.

My internets crashed, but I'm glad to see the thread went through. Even better, I am glad to see that /tg/ has received it with open arms.

As of now, I have planned for The King to be the main employer of the PCs, with some possible side jobs from the other bosses. Care to help me figure out their personalities, /tg/? While the images given are certainly emotive, they do not breathe life into the characters.

Also, the idea of other brands being linked to other aspects hadn't crossed my mind until browsing this thread; while it seems like a cool idea, in practice, it may be too much cultural suffusion, and I doubt having too many references would make for an interesting game; rather, it might cheapen the whole thing. For now, I'm sticking with the Fast-Food Kingpins (though that may change).

Perhaps the King and Queen split up a while back, and have had bad blood between each other since, though they still harbor feelings for each other; maintaining appearances and stubborn pride have kept them from reconciling?

Some are on their own, notably the fast food titans such as the King and The Don. Some, like Jack and the Subway Boys, will either be enforcers or freelancers who take contracts from the larger foodies. I'm actually leaning towards Wendy being a freelancer, much like Jack.

Also, personality-wise for the King, I'm digging the suggestions I've been seeing; I'm getting a vibe similar to Littlefinger or Varys from Game of Thrones, though that's only a rough framework. Keep 'em coming, /tg/!

This, he was born into a genteel southern family that had fallen on hard times. He used his connections in local government to keep the competition out when he built his little empire and he now acts as the groups face with legitimate authorities.
Having the most to lose, he is the most concerned with a veneer of respectability and tends to frown on new ventures which might endanger both his connections and his status in the polite society he wants disparately to be a part of.

Wendy is The Colonel's Little Girl. She grew up in this game and she knows all the tricks and subtleties. Shes probably the smartest of the entire group but the politics really bore her. "Chihuha" Carlito is penne ante shit. Nickles and dimes when the rest deal in dollars. But he tries to make up for it in volume. Does pretty good, but he's always going to be looked down upon by the rest. He's done pretty well, taking the same basic scams and constantly repackaging them, but if you are in his crew expect nothing but disdain.

Everyone knows B.K. is gunning for Ronald's position. Everyone also knows "The King" *as he is often called) just isn't going to pull it off. The Don has too much muscle and too many resources to be toppled. No matter how clever his opposition is. If B.K. could bring Wendy and Jack onboard he could do it, but those two are stone-cold psycho. Don't hench with them if you value your life and think failure is a possibility.

No, the real opportunity is at the lower levels. Caesar, John, there's opportunity there for one to knock the other out and then maybe make a run at The Don. B.K. is too public, too obvious. The Don has his eye on him at all times. You want to topple Ronald? Start from below.

I'm not sure how well Wendy fits in as a hired gun. At least I'm not sure I'd take her as a hacksaw like Jack.
    Ideas:
    -Wise ass get away driver.
-Launder person. Has a solid front and is often who the others go to.
    -A fence.
-Similar to above involving some sort of black market auction or other black market trade operation. Being the center of power of it.

She doesn't look terribly hands on. Willing to kill as needed but unlikely to torture or go to town with a blade. Presonality could see some odd inspiration from Janine ala Ghostbusters.

I could see her being a niece to the Colonel as well.

Should show increasing paranoia. Running a business, keeping face, dealing with different situations with different possiblities and having to make public appearances for kids (he is still a clown and what kind of clown doesn't show up for the kiddies?) can wear down one alot thus pushing his abilitys to think rationally.

Wendy ain't the Colonel's niece. She's an orphan he picked up somehow. As the story goes, he waxed a favorite lieutenant of his called Dave. Now Dave and the Colonel were tight before whatever happened went down, and as Dave died he begged the Colonel to watch out for his girl. So he did.

Well Wendy split. Either before or after she found out the truth, nobody knows. Still fond of the Colonel personally, but professionally and quietly she's gunning for him. Hell, she's gunning for everyone. Bitch is psycho. The only redeeming factor is she gives money to orphanages.

Don't work for Wendy. She wants whatever she wants done right and doesn't tolerate failure. But if you hurt a kid or god forbid an orphan? Kill yourself before she gets you. That doesn't matter if you are working for her or not. She has eyes and she doesn't forgive.

Ronald is a sociopath. He wears the facade of the calm collected leader as naturally as his greasepaint smile but deep down hes a madman. Top of the game, He has all the power and all the money. No one man rivals him. Untouchable, he just does what he wants and doesn't give a fuck. People's lives are his playthings.
    >> Anonymous 11/11/09(Wed)03:06 No.6657071
Ronald doesn't HAVE emotions anymore. He exists solely for his job, and just acts as he needs to act to get what he needs. He used to be a fun guy but he just doesn't care anymore, and he's got just enough fear left in him to never want to be toppled.

The King is dapper as all fuck, of course. Colonel hates him for it.

The Queen is a widow, former lover of King works, maybe he bumped off her husband, which caused the rift between them? She could've been married to Dave Thomas, which incorporates Wendy there too; she could've turned sociopath when her father died. And if she's also the Colonel's little girl it ties that together; Queen is friends with Colonel since Dave and the Colonel were on good terms. I see Queen actually as not really having a lot of power beyond her dead husband's estate and knowing a lot of people. She can call favors and if the PCs get to know her, she's a valuable asset.

Any suggestions for the Trojan and Baby Face?

Panda Express are the real dark horses of the game. None of the others, with the exception of maybe Chihuahua, really understand what the hell is going on with Asian Fusion anyway.

Panda has no ties to speak of, just a boatload of foreign money and some serious, serious muscle in the form of Pan-Pan, who is the toughest motherfucker on the street. Strong as an ox, yet surprisingly fleet-of-foot, he is one guy your do not want to tangle with. The low-level thugs in all the chains spend their downtime speculating on who would win in a fight between Pan-pan and Jack in the Box, but all they can agree on is that they don't want to be in the room if and when it goes down. Hell, if possible they'd rather not be in the same state.

In relation to the PCs, Panda Express offer the most lucrative but also the most dangerous jobs. Just as with Ronald and BK and Wendy, failing to pull a job off is at least 20% more likely to kill you than a bullet to the brain is. But since nobody wants to see the American fast casual restaurant market go to some freaky slit-eyed bitch, succeeding is going to net you a whole lot of bad rep with the other chains.

His house smells like patchouli Incense and marinara sauce. Fucker talks nonstop about spirit guides, magic crystal power and self actualization. That is, until you get him mad. Yeah, we all know the history. D.Q.'s husband and The Colonel used to be top dogs. Before Dave....you kids don't know, but Dave was a mobster's mobster. Had it all together and saw where Ronald was going. Tried to warn the Colonel, but he wouldn't have it. Got so bad that...well things happened and Dave got whacked.

That's when Ronald made his move. Now the Colonel and D.Q.'s widow are second tier now. Now some people say Wendy is somebody's kid. D.Q.'s and Dave or The Colonel or even B.K. I don't know about any of that, but she ain't no psycho. She runs a tight ship and when she wants something done she wants it done fast and correct. If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. But high standards don't make you a psycho.

The kid thing, yeah. She won't tolerate kids getting hurt, but who does?

There is a rift among the Subway Boys. Fat Jared has been harbouring secret resentment for Skinny Jared for years now, because he hates the fact that he's half the team and yet his jeans get more limelight than he does.

Fatty's the more violent of the two - living through high school as a hulking fatass will do that to a guy, especially when his twin brother is getting head from every cheerleader in the school. He's not too smart, and gets angry very easily, especially if someone mentions his weight.

Skinny Jared, on the other hand, is slick and laid back. A real ladies' man. Charlie Sheen kind of guy. He's good at shuffling numbers - he figured out how to spread out that 6 grams of fat so that the sandwich still tasted like a sandwich. He was also the brains behind calling employees "sandwich artists" and pumping that smell out the vents above the door to attract customers. If it wasn't for Fatty, he'd probably go a long way as a 2IC for one of the other chains. The Colonel doesn't trust him, of course; he's far too modern and sly. But the King has been trying to get him on his side for years, as have Wendy and DQ (both of whom he is playing against the other in a battle for his affections.) But of course, if he betrays Fatty by going off with some other chain, all Hell will break loose.

Unless some unlikely group of PCs, new on the scene, no ties just yet, happen to bump Fatty off before he saw it coming. Then Skinny would be in a position to pay them back very handsomely indeed...

Birdie was the youngest of Ronald's henchmen, the one most devoted to him and the one who got hurt the most in his slow descent into unfeeling paranoia.

When they first got into the business, he did his best to keep her out of the nasty stuff. She was taught to negotiate, to remain calm, to think, to plan. he did his best to keep her off the street. But soon The Don began to spend more and time in his office, having playtime with a bottle of Jack Daniel's. He didn't come to meetings any more, he didn't spend time with the gang, and no matter how funny Birdie's jokes were, he never even smiled. Grimace embraced Ron's fall as a way for him to move up in the game; Hamburglar just up and disappeared and nobody's seen him since. But Birdie, she started to go off the rails in a big way.

The first thing she did was fall in with Chihuahua, getting into drag racing and some mostly-harmless drugs like cannabis and MDMA. Everybody knew her as Donald's girl, though, and they wouldn't go near her. No amount of diplomacy will win you any real friends if they're all treating you like a Ming vase. So in the end it was just her and Cihuahua against the world - without Ronald to talk to, he became her everything. Eventually they got engaged. But it could never last. She received an anonymous tip that all was not as it seemed, and hired a hard-boiled PI to do some snooping. He found that Chihuahua had been engaged three times already, and everyone who knew him knew he was just out for a Green Card.

She wasn't sure what to think. She went around to his place to ask him about it, to look him in the eye and ask him if he really loved her. But when she opened the door, all she saw was the back of his head between Katie Trojan's legs.

That was three days ago. She hasn't come out of her room yet. She's remaining calm. Thinking. Planning.

I wouldn't like to be Chihuahua when she comes out.

Was respected by Dave and the Colonel as a good low level earner but just didn't have the smarts to get past the middle ranks. He's been at the shit end of this game forever and it's wearing at him. He's loyalty to Dave and old school respect for the organization had kept him inline, but with Ron's take over he's becoming a wild card, looking for any chance at making a play that will get him the respect he think they owe him. Think Al Pacino's character in Donnie Brasco.

You should make something like a alternate universe campaign, where the fast food industry added some form of syrum that gives off a high addiction rate. But people spent all their money on fast food and when they couldn't get it they did ANYTHING they could for fast food, this created the U.S/any other country into a giant quarrel of a nation disbanding or some shit and leaving control to the fast food companies (as they could do whatever they want with the addicted as they need their fix) and leaving them to do home deliveries and have heavily armed delivery boys and fast food places, as fast food is only obtainable by the obscenely rich while the poor are the main population trying to raid, delivery trucks/cars/whatever for supplies leaving sort of a baron land mainly destroyed for fighting for the last bits of fast food on the streets, where law is barely enforced by healthy food organizations trying to find a cure for the addiction and controlling certain dangerous supply routes trying to get a hold of the syrum etc. etc. You get the point

I find the face Ronald is making in the pic to be very...I don't know how to put it. I do know that he doesn't seem to be a psychopath.

At least not at face value.

He seems to have made it where he is (I'm basing this off What America Eats from the History Channel) by being an innovator. He MADE "the Market" as it is today.

He's a legend. He started with a fistfull of dollars, some good ideas, and a heart full of hope. Next thing people know, he's on top of the world, and all the others (the other mafia members) are hounding on his success.

However, after some time, ultimate power seems less fun, for what can you do when you've reached the absolute top? You can only go down.

In short, he's in total despair. He's got 9/10 of every dollar spent in the market, and he KNOWS he can rise no further. All he can do is fight the long, dirty battle to simply keep what he has. He can't let himself do anything less, for how hard he's worked.

This is where he darkened. Away went the feel-good image portrayed in the marketing ads (once actually real in Ron's heart), only came the way to get that last piece of every dollar that eluded him, or die and lose EVERYTHING trying.

His longtime friends, closest to his heart, fell out of his attention, as the empire grew, pushed ever more and more to the periphery. Grimace, pushed from the limelight, once Ron's best childhood friend, is now head of the Golden Arches' dirty work. He feels he's been ostrasized by his friend, and is disgruntled, yet cannot seem to hate the person closest to him in life.

    Birdy...I got nuthin.

But Red "Hamburgler" Hamberg, met by Ron saving a poor boy doing a dine-n-dash by hiding him in his treehouse, was the final nail on the doors of Ron's heart. Rising to the top with him and the rest, he couldn't take the pressure of success.

He got jittery. The coffee burn scandal made him overanticipate stock and market shifting. He embezzled, thinking to jump ship with all he could carry away before, as he thought, the entire corporation fell down.

Ron had him hit. You can't do that to The Don. No matter who you are, or what you WERE.

There is not one day Ronald does not think of that order.

He exists now, a little bit "unhinged". He once wore his clown make-up every Friday at the office to cheer-up to the common workers on the legitimate side of his empire.

Now it is worn all the time. Not even Birdie or Grimace know why or what goes on behind the once friendly and goofy Ronald and his piercing blue eyes; they only know not to question, only to act to the letter in all orders, for the Don works his magic best when "[they] have it [his] way".

Ronald himself doesn't seem to know why he puts on the clown face every day. He seems to feel that that's his own face, half-asleep putting it on again after waking, the cheek-to-cheek red smile hiding the real and almost imperceptible frown hidden in plain sight. Touch or smudge the makeup, and the Don will put an order out for you.

Grimace and Birdie know and rue the day that comes when Ronald loses not just his heart, but the humanity of his soul, and his almost-frown turns into a toothy grin and the clown smile gets remade into a frown.

Minor nitpick-Have It Your Way is BK, not McD's.

Jack needs to be somewhere just above Carlito. He's running from -something,- and has his fingers in just about anything to try to find how to keep his head above the water. There's only one or two things he does well, and he knows it-but he can't stop now, because everyone else will catch up.

Perhaps the face under the mask tells why, exactly, he's acting that way. It could be an acid-oozed ruin. It could be life support, to keep his solitary lung working. Hell, for all we know, it could be his -real head-, stuffed with enough computer tech to keep a very simple AI working.

But he can sometimes be seen to be rubbing the cracks, and whatever's inside, he doesn't want to be seen.

I like my version of Ronald as BBEG. Not to wank myself, but I like the idea of him being disgusted of what he's wrought in the Fast Food business, and one day snapping (probably because the PCs did something plotwise to kick it off), and deciding to bring EVERYTHING down with him in some sort of unconciously-apologetic deathwish.

The final hooks for the PCs are to either kill him, and save the Market (DM's discretion from here) at the cost of greater chaos as the Golden Arches fall forever, or during the final fight to make him remember what it was like when he started working.

That second route won't last, but it would be enough for him to kick back the PCs in a plothax-run-from-the-burning/crumbling-building (his good old friends Grimace and Birdie and maybe the imaginary figment of long-dead Hamburgler), to "rebuild". Setting goes back to normal, only with McDonalds needing to fight to recover lost market share. Cue end credits.

Let's mix these together. Ronald is cold and a little bit off, but everyone, even as they try to steal bits and pieces of his marketshare, know that without him, everything would be absolute and uncontrollable chaos of the ensuing power vacuum and loss of a stable giant. He manages this, also addind to his depression of no longer being able to experience business gambles, but only to keep as much of what he has to himself.

His only fear is losing everything. And in the back of his mind, he knows that as he has nearly everything, he has almost nothing left to live for.

The Subway boys are shady information dealers. No one knows where they live, in fact they're never even seen unless they want to be seen. With their deep knowledge of the Underground, they have their finger on the pulse of the city. Eavesdropping on businessmen's conversations, kidnapping people and dragging them into long forgotten maintenance corridors, these people can appear and disappear before you can blink an eye. There are no secrets you can possibly keep from them in their subway. The other bosses pay them to monitor high profile targets, and anyone who knows of their existence knows to never go into the subway unless you have nothing they want. The bosses only send low-level thugs as their contacts so that nothing of value can be forcibly divulged.

That's why he can't be the cannibal. He's so off-kilter, it probably can't even occur to him. He thinks "only crazy people" eat other people, as he himself is lining his party hat with tin-foil to magnify his "psychic powers".

    >>Of course, even if they do figure out it's Wendy, this setting more or less says that she's untouchable personally. The PCs can get her to stop putting "Soylent Green" in the burgers, but they can't stop Wendy from having it on her own

    I like this setting facet.

Rule: Bosses don't get hit, unless it's a MAJOR plot point.
You can get bosses to stop their business plan (through force or diplomacy/favors), but you can't take down the franchise entirely a la Black Lagoon.

    Dr. Pepper.

"He was lying there, dead on the table. He had eaten so much...he'd practically already been salted and larded by all the burgers. And I guess my curiosity just got the best of me. It really is quite delicious, human flesh. Rather like pork. Did you know it is called 'long pig' by those foreign cultures which incorporate it into their regular dietary habits? It's true. Not that you'll figure that out, of course.

I certainly hope you haven't been dieting lately. That'd make this quite disappointing."

I figured cannibalism would be kind of for everyone except maybe the colonel. When you've got alot of dead bodies around and your business hinges on indistinguishable ground "meat" its not a big leap of logic for a criminal.

Let's ignore the Soda-factions for now in this setting. Stick to the big players in the OP pic.

That many bosses is about half a year's worth of good sessions and plots with multiple-mini campaigns in a single setting before they get to Ronald McDonald himself.

More characters will make this too heady to handle. We have to establish the setting fully with the other characters first.

That's the thing. That's just a "stereotype". That sort of thinking would hurt business BIG TIME. It's an urban legend and joke, which the bosses absolutely HATE.

And Wendy just holds onto her poker face, as she has a "ham sandwich" during "business lunch" with the PC, explaining the above.

For the high-fat diet humans eat today, I'm guessing that dry-cured ham a la prociutto made from human leg would be very similar...

That's how pigs for prociutto are supposed to be traditonally fed...the fat and whey left over from Parmasean cheesemaking.

QUALITY CHECK, RIGHT THE FUCK NOW.

Ronald McDonald + Friends: Totally good.
The King: Has something...but not much. Needs a serious finishing, not waffling-about.
Everybody else: More or less nothing.

I like the little parts about Panda Cherng and Pan-Pan though.

Yeah, but even then they're still just side-NPCs.

The Bosses NEED to be defined first for this setting to work properly. They make this setting FUNCTION. They're the pop culture icons you've known since birth, now bloody and grimy mob leaders behind that $1 made-to-order burger you eat after waiting less than five minutes for.

The King: he got his start as an accountant or banker somewhere, and his slide into crime was astonishingly simple. He was such a greedy opportunist that it wasn't long before he was embezzling millions in ways nobody'd ever thought of, selling market information to the highest bidder, and gathering information on everyone and everything he could. Soon he created a number of restaurants to serve as various fronts--money laundering being the main one. Seeing the Don's success, he realized he could one-up the clown if he pushed for it. He acts like he already has--he adopted the moniker "the King," after all, arrogant fuck that he is. But he hasn't yet, after years of trying, and now it's pissing him off. Now he's in it not only to make money (and BOY does he) but also to out-shine the one guy who beats him without even trying. That. Fucking. Clown.

Colonel Sanders: While he doesn't much give a damn about the food he makes, he's still the closest to civilized in the whole bunch. He sees the King, dapper as fuck with his fancy clothes and waxed mustache, and chuckles to himself. The King is a fake, a fraud, but the Colonel is the REAL gentleman. Killing is something he finds most distasteful, almost as bad as betrayal. The Colonel doesn't turn in his allies. But that doesn't mean he won't do the same for his enemies. Oh no. See, the Colonel's with the FBI now, not that anyone knows that. He plays everything real close to the chest these days, since friends are so few and far between. Hell, ever since Dave died, and Wendy grew so distant from everything, the closest thing to a friend is the Queen. And damn, there's a woman with class! Colonel likes her. He's not the sort to lust after her; while he certainly appreciates her body, he's not gonna make a move in Dave's memory.

You read it. After that one dudes Ronald story, everyting else is nothing more than just quirks and DC 10-15 Knowledge checks.

When you build a setting around characters, you better make sure everybody has a defined-enough personality for you to let you know what they do and how they react when the wildcard PCs are in action.

Then they'd try and haggle him down too, the bastards...") would fare against the fast food mafias.
