    ITT: Lesser known RPGs

Try to sell them, tell us why we should take a look. These should be games that are rarely discussed, like maybe mentioned once or twice in it's history.

I'll start the ball rolling with Qin. An RPG in the vein of movies like Crouching Tiger, characters are slightly mystical, performing graceful kung-fu like in the movies. It's more calm of a game, and rooted in Chinese folklore.

Two interesting notes is that the game awards you for a balanced player, your health determined by how balanced you are. The dice system is the "Yin Yang" system which uses a black d10 and a white d10, instead of attempting to achieve the highest number, you roll to achieve the highest DIFFERENCE between the two. Rolling doubles represents harmony and is treated much like a "natrual 20" in d20 games.

L5R is better because it's more popular. Popular things are better, that's why they're popular.
    >> Anonymous 11/15/09(Sun)00:14 No.6710860
Qin is awesome. It gets talked about all the time on other sites.

4chan has a pretty narrow focus, TBH, which is why this thread should be awesome.

I'm going to throw up some props for Agon. Rules-lite, beer n pretzel competitive RPG set in ancient Greece. When players take rests and other things to recover, the GM gets more points to spend on encounters/difficulties for the players, and so it creates this really nice ebb and flow of gameplay to keep things moving, and it's all very simple. You can have characters, scenarios, and everything generated in a half hour and start playing right away.

The point of this thread is to talk about LESS popular games.

And L5R is more Japanese than Chinese

    Because your childhood demands it.

The system's playable, if not the greatest thing ever. I highly recommend the random character gen, because it can lead to some truly amusing things. Bonus points if you play with a group that doesn't take things too seriously.

What other game can you play a escaped Circus Bear that was mutated by getting exposed to toxic waste, and then was trained in Ninjutsu by a Psionic Box Turtle, all while looking like a fucking Ewok, but capable of using a motorcycle as a melee weapon and taking sustained automatic fire from heavy machine guns?

I always talk about Aces and Eights, but no one cares. No one wants to roleplay as cowboys, I must be weird.

Anywho Aces and Eights is hands down the best Western RPG out there if you're looking for realism. No Weird West like Deadlands, but actual western fun.

The book itself is beautiful, the rules are fantastic (albeit heavy) including the "Shot Clock" system for shooting your gun. You place a target down on a sillouette of what you're shooting, and where you want to shoot it. Then you roll a die to see how accurate you are, and draw a poker card to see where the bullet deviates. A shot to the arm might go in his head! Not to mention the combat is BRUTALLY painful, and measured in heart beats. Having your gun in a holster as opposed to your pant's pocket can mean life or death.

What's nice is that gunslinging isn't all the game offers, it offers a great series of mini-games using their own unique ruleset to represent aspects of the western life, from gold-panning to cattle-wrangling even to court trials. The game will let you do whatever you want. Want to own a General Store? There are rules and rewards for doing so. Wanna hunt bandits? Sure! Wanna BE a bandit? Go ahead. You can even, with some history tweaking (they did an alternate history as to avoid history nerds) even partake in the Civil War.

Very good presentation, and a great game for those interested in story heavy games that let them do whatever.

I proceeded to buy a ton of related crap on ebay for cheap. I have all of After the Bomb through Avalon.

TMNT is still the most fun out of any of them though, After the Bomb just has the advantage of cool new species. Oh, and Avalon has rules for a joust where you don't ride the horse, you ARE the horse.

What I'd always wanted along those lines was a Native America + Aztec + Olmec etc tribal splatbook of sorts, an improvement on what Maztica was not unlike the improvement Nyambe was over Chult, That, and a 3E Al-Qadim, since the netbooks were only sorta-okay.

    Hollow Earth Expedition

A true labor of love, and the creator has such an infectious enthusiasm for the game. It has a pulp setting, and is one of the few systems I've seen that is very solid with rewarding roleplaying. All player characters have a Motivation and a Flaw. If the player acts in accordance with either one, they get a Style point, which is kind of like an Action Point or Willpower, but in much higher supply.

It's also built for fast gameplay. All abilities for PCs and NPCs alike have the averages figured, and if the average would meet what they need, they never have to roll a die if they don't want to.

Unhallowed is a bit like Dark Heresy in Victorian London. The basic story is that hell broke out and now all of Britain is overrun by zombies and other ghoulish things, not to mention the "London Fog" has grown so toxic that it requires any living soul to wear a gas mask (cartridges are actually important in the game.)

Where you come in is that the government pays a high sum to anyone who can fight back the horde enough to reclaim cities. So you're part adventuring group, part military squad trying to hold positions.

Now the game itself isn't perfect, in fact some of the fluff is pretty gay. But our group has removed anything that makes it seem like a bad goth band and play it as a really grimdark Victorian RPG

    >So you say WotG is like Hero, but not Qin?
The combat is, at any rate. And you can have Hero-style tragic plots in WotG too (enjoy your unresolvable conflict of Filial Piety and Duty To Your Leader, LOLOLOL I TROAL YEW).

WotG has very high-fantasy/powered Wuxia combat (moderately so, very much so when you get into Rare arts and ranks higher than the default), interesting Secret Arts like Daoist magic, Predictionism, and social-stuff Courtiers get, and is a ton of fun all around.

The example I like to use is that you can shout something like "your Blue Flame Spear style is helpless against my Yin Ice Sword technique!" and have it be meaningful (Blue Flame Spear focuses on weapon-breaking, Yin Ice Sword makes weapons out of your Chi).

my WotG character got his from having a background of an older sister that knew kung fu, and ran off to join the quasi-lesbian secret society rather than be trapped in a loveless arranged marriage. He looked up to her, and ended up kind of fucked when he learned that she hadn't so much just disappeared, but ran off, which actually fucks him of conflicting his filial piety, both to his family and to his beloved sister once he learns about her new life.

He ended up dying in dishonor as he held off an army to allow his sister, her lover, and a band of the women to escape the mercenary forces hired by the jilted fiancee's family.

    Shit was epic.

No. Like I said, it's only very tangentially related to the comic. Some of the default NPCs, a little about the setting are from the comic. I flipped through a trade of the thing at some point; it wasn't so much my cup of tea--the game is awesome, though.

Has anyone played this? I can never get people to play it. The closer analogy seems to be grimdark Dilbert. This is one of the tasks

    "Kill Fluffy
Rationale: The Company owns the rights to fifteen separate breeds of dogs. Recently a kid out in the suburbs registered a mongrel of at least two of these breeds. It’s brand dilution. Fluffy has to die.
More stuff: Little Jimmy loves his dog. And Fluffy loves him. The kid’s dad is an executive in one of the more belligerent of the Parallel Market contractors.
Supporting cast: Little Jimmy, Fluffy the dog, the kid’s mum, the kid’s manager to whom the Reps must report, copyright lawyer with a gun.
    Extras: Animal rights protestors,
What the Company wants: Duh. Kill Fluffy. And maybe sue the kid."

Don't Rest Your Head by Evil Hat Productions is pretty awesome. Weird stuff in a mad, nightmarish city. Got to play a fucked up businessman, who lost his memory in the end.
Nine Worlds is one of the first "new school" rpgs I played, not bad at all.
Fading Suns has some nice space opera going on, but the system is old and clunky. The 2nd edition books also lack some finishing (the skill list, for example, doesn't have all the skills etc).
Eclipse Phase is pretty popular right now, but I still have to mention it, since it has awesome setting.

It is. While old and gamistic (written adventures in particular are badly smelling of DND) system is simple and fine, and I might add that while not very deep they get the gist of the imperial age (say 100-200 AC, but game has a moderate of ucronia).
"Classes"/roles are: warrior (cursus militum... of couse, ripe with latin), explorer (middle man), diplomatic, augur, the savant which is a kind of mcgyver character.
