GENTLEMEN, DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR ZAKU IS?

OR WHAT YOU WERE GOING TO SWAP TO?

This will be a short zeonquest episode since I need to be up at 7:00 tommorow.

You are David Lister, ace Zeonic Mobile Suit pilot currently part of 3rd Division, 2nd Battalion 1st Company, known colloquially as 321 Company for obvious reasons.

Last episode there were tearful farewells all round as your previous unit: Mastodon Battalion was absorbed into 3rd Division and you said goodbye to your old CO - Wolfgang Strauss.

You are currently in command of the 3rd Squad of 1st Company which consists of you and:

ZOLOMON RINGO: AKA, the bro, AKA Oh god he's got an Axe run!
Your wingman since the start of the war, his speciality is twin Heat Hawks and general close combat.

He currently pilots an MS-06f Zaku II with 2 Heat Hawks and an MG.

He has 98 kills, most of them axe related.

She pilots an MS-06K Zaku Cannon

You opt to keep the suit in reserve.
It will remain in the California base unless specifically asked for.

The rest of March goes quietly you perform a couple of patrols and some dummy combat tests for the Gouf, overall it performs well and you have no complaints.

On the fourth of April however, you are called into the briefing room.

The battalion is being sent out to Iowa. It seems that the Feddies are making a counter attack from Canada, and a large contingent of air assets have broken past local forces and are heading towards Iowa, as there are still several concealed runways and airbases in that area. Your orders are to intercept them when they're low on fuel, just before they touchdown.
Locating and destroying any enemy airfields you find would be a bonus.

This action will be under taken by 2nd Battalion as well as three companies of Dopp fighters. You'll be transported by either Fat-Uncle transports or Gaws. Dodai riding is an option, but it's standard practice to have a normal ride home if the Dodai get's shot out from under you."

I suggest that we wait to start the attack until the enemy aircraft are on the ground. Each of our suits hits one airfield, then moves on to another one. That lets us hit the airfields as fast as possible, and aircraft on the ground are nowhere near as much of a problem as aircraft in the air.

Prioritize cratering the runways first. That'll trap the planes on the ground, allowing us to smash the rest of the field at our leisure. Next priorities are fuel depots, air control, repair shops and ground equipment. Only once the airfield is completely unusable do we move on to destroying the aircraft.

Yeah, but aren't we trying to get the aircraft BEFORE they touch down? There might be some left on the grounds, but I thought the bulk of them would be airborne. Still, I guess keeping them from landing would be a good idea.

    >>6820968
The aircraft will be easier to kill on the ground. Also, if we wait for the first wave of aircraft to land and then start blowing the shit out of the airfields they landed at, the second wave of Feddies is going to be pointed towards any of their airfields we aren't currently trashing, revealing their locations to us.

if the enemys sensble, sure, but ripping up the airfields will help stop them anyway, as thay wont have anywhere to oprate out of. if you can hit both, extra credit.

given the scale of the attacks, i think its best the keep the unit together. shell the landing grounds with the arty zeon whilst we and ringo take out the planes.

The fact that we don't know where the airfields are is why we wait until they've landed to hit the first wave of Feddies. If we hit them in the air, they can break off and run towards some other airfield, or just try to draw us away. Once we see where they've landed, we'll know where the airfields are and we can tear them to pieces.

The aircraft are coming in from Canada and landing at the hidden airfields. So any planes that are still airborne when we hit the fields are probably planes that are low on fuel and munitions and about to land, not planes that are heading out for another strike against our men.

You all requisiton Dodai's and board a Gaw.

It takes three hours of flight to reach Iowa. You outline the plan to the rest of 321 Company, Captain Montagu agrees with the plan.

The Zaku's will deploy in secret and follow the airplanes until they land, they'll escape detection by flying nape of the earth on Dodai's, using the still fairly high minovsky density in the area to avoid radar.

The Dopps will harrass the planes and keep tabs on them, and when the Zaku's attack they'll move in to finish the job.

Depends on how many airfields there are. The biggest priority is making sure that none of those planes can take off again once they reach Iowa, so I think we'll at least want to crater the runways at as many of the airfields as possible before we start focusing on one at a time to thoroughly destroy. Otherwise, the incoming Feddies will be able to land, refuel, rearm, and take off from any airfields that we left untouched because we didn't split up at first.

Oh, and one really dickish idea: do we have any captured Feddie transports available? If we do, I say we use those and come in along the same flight path that the Feddies are using in order to take the fields by surprise. If we get really lucky, we can even land and unload right on the tarmac.

You arrive in Iowa and the entire Battalion makes a combat drop onto a selected landing zone where the Dodai's are waiting.

You are working to a tight schedule so you all quickly mount up and fly off. The battalion seperates into squads to hunt down individual airbases.
The minovsky density isn't so bad that you can't get garbled radio signals out, but guided weapons and radar wont work all that well, so you're sensing units with thermal sensors only.

In the distance you see the onrushing horde, the skies seems to darken with what appears to be oncoming clouds.

    "Oh shit man..." Say's Zolomon

"This plan of your's seemed a lot better before those thunder clouds moved in..."

You peer more closely through your telescopic sensors.

"Uh, Zolomon? THOSE AREN'T THUNDER CLOUDS."

Incoming fighters have sufficient number to partially blot out the sun. At least 1 full divisions worth, more likely two.

Harrassing and following will be the best your Dopp pilots will be able to do against a force of that size.

SURVIVAL IS PARAMOUNT TO NOT GETTING SPOTTED.

The tactics for killing planes are as follows:
    1) If not a Newtype, let the computers do the targeting.
    2) If a Newtype, use mind bullets.

We may want to pass the idea of a Flak Zaku up the chain of command, though. Make it the Zeon version of the German 88 from WWII; an anti-aircraft weapon that can also tear apart anything on the ground without heavy armor. Probably would involve lots and lots of autocannons.

Do we know if those aircraft fought their way through our lines or snuck through, by the way? If the former, then they're almost certainly low on fuel and even lower on ammo; if the latter, they're going to be more of a threat.

Although you can't radio the Dopps over this distance they get the idea and begin making brief hit and run raids against the air formations.
They take a modest toll in enemy airforces, and the air forces seem unwilling to persue and deal with the wolves at their heels.

You land the Dodai's as they fly overhead. They soon start to split up into small groups. Each heading in different directions, you pick the nearest, remount and start to follow the enemy.

If they had to fight their way through the front lines, they probably used a lot of ammo. A formation that thick can't dodge effectively to avoid getting shot at. And if the Dopps start hitting it from behind, that'll create enough chaos in the air that they won't be able to see the Dodais on the ground.

Remember, radar is borked in this area, so they're relying on IR sensors (which I don't know if the aircraft have) or the Mark One Eyeball (not great for spotting shit on the ground when you're trying to avoid getting blown out of the sky by other aircraft.

Think of the Dopps as killer whales and the Feddie planes as a giant ball of herring; just keep sweeping back through the middle after forcing the formation to tighten up by hitting the edges.

Some flights have landed (mostle Saberfish and Fly Manta's) and a fair majority have yet to land. You can see the fuel tenders moving up to begin rapid refueling.

I'd say hit it just before planes start taking off. Keeps things on the ground, and aircraft with low fuel fight more conservatively (read as: Less likely to be able to kill you) than ones that are freshly resupplied.

Again, if we can blast the fuel tanks while a bunch of aircraft are hooked up to them? Saves ammo, causes confusion, looks awesome, fits our MO.

And, just as important, to keep any aircraft that have landed from taking off.

The most fun part is that once we take out the runways at all of the airfields, any surviving Feddie planes in the air are doomed. If they can't land, they can't refuel, and I doubt they packed enough gas for a round trip.

if the ammos situtions dire, we should hold here. we cant take out any more bases without more ammo, and missle lanchers out of stuff to shoot. plus the hits are having the desired effects.

    plus intel.

The air forces either land and surrender or just eject and let their planes crash.
Another squad of beat up Zaku's land next to you. You recognise their leader as Captain Montagu.

"Good work Lt. It looks like they were stretched to bingo fuel, and couldn't afford to put up a fight. We still managed to lose two whole squads from 3rd Company however. I've gotten word that they were able to take out the air field before they went though. From what we've been able to gather less than two full squadrons have been able to take off and escape."

"Looks like today was a good day, the Feds have almost certainly lost large amounts of their airforces in the canadian area. It wont be long before we take that area now. Of course we wouldn't have even know about these hidden airfields if it wasn't for intel assets in the field. Guess I can't make any cracks about Zeonic Military Intelligence for a while huh?"

The battle is largely winding to close.

    Two squadrons, huh?

    Can we take them down?

Although I do wonder what the point of this clusterfuck was for the Feddies; there must have been some reason why they felt that now was the time to reveal all of these hidden airfields. What important targets or quiet sections of the front are within range of the fields we just pounded?

Ask the Capt. if there have been rumors of any fighter pilots pulling off ridiculous stunts or making trouble for our boys. Also see if you can bum some ammo. Finally check in with the squad and see if they are having any problems.

Yeah, ask around for word on if any exquisitely gifted pilots, or any more Federation mobile suits have been spotted. Anywhere.

Also, since we're Lt. now, congratulate our forces on a job well done.

To be fair, the feddies didn't realise that Zeon KNEW about the secret landing zones in Iowa. If they hadn't then they would have picked an area to attack them with which had more cover.

But since they knew that they would be landing in the area AND that they would be on bingo fuel (which was the real intelligence coup for the zeonic spy network) then they could stage this raid, prevent the enemy from landing safely and deal with vast numbers of enemy forces.

In the aftermath of the battle, your forces return to california. The tech boys seem pleased with your reports on how the Gouf handled in combat, and Jolyne's proven herself a good member of the team. Scoring over twenty kills in her first mission with you.
Not that it wasn't a target rich environment, but still.

You've also managed to cement your position as an Ace with 321 Company, which is always good.
