Sentience was necessary for their task, and they assisted this worlds creation. They know of most things in it, because they put them there. Eventually their masters departed to realms unknown, but they were left behind. The dragons will claim they were left to rule this Earth, to live their own lives, but they may still unknowingly still serve some ancient directive. They gather works of art, the crafts of man, dwarf, elf, and many others. Some say they do this in order to reap some abstract concept their masters created this world to seed for.
Thanks to the nature of their creation, the Dragons have been left well equipped to survive the ravages of time. There is nought on this Earth capable of dispatching one short of direct attack by another being, and even to this they prove near impossible to sunder, their immense size, tough flesh and skin, and complete lack of any internal organs that might serve as weakpoints making them nigh invulnerable. As well, their immense strength, magical skill, and devastating internal weapons employing some eternal power source of the creators makes them more than capable of destroying most threats before any damage is done. However, they inevitably fall, their numbers always in decline. It may take millenia but eventually a civilisation may turn, as some mood strikes them, upon a dragon. They can make more of themselves, but are ill inclined too, for the task is strenuous and holds none of the incentives it does to creatures of the flesh. |
