The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10.
Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

It's been about a week since you woke up in the city, weak, with only the ability to devour the traits of others. You've eaten your way to a strong, combat-ready body, and left behind a string of disappearances in your wake.

It's morning. You're at an inn with Claire, one of two individuals in the world you could call an ally. The occasional snap, crackle, and pop of static electricity around you is a reminder of your hunting in the sewers last night, and your devouring of a den of shocker lizards.

What is your plan of action? (Actually, incoming text first.)

You've been considering a few ways you could go from here:
-This might be a good time to leave town, now that the disappearances have gotten some notice. Either to a new town, or you could try roughing it in the wilderness for a while.
-You're considering returning to the sewers a third time, and hunting gators and those intelligent aquatic beings now that you're healthy again--perhaps even with a plan. There may be other creatures you haven't seen down there with desirable abilities if you push deeper.
-There are a pair of wizards at the library you've been considering scouting out and devouring for a while now. They allegedly have a supply of scrolls and even magical items.
-You could try devouring city guards and members of the underworld, to get another appearance and the knowledge of the best ways to remain undiscovered within Thurminham.

On the smaller scale, there's your cat, Morsel; you liked that little guy despite yourself, and you haven't seen him since the night of the fire at Claire's place. There's a feather you found in the sewers that you'd like to have identified; Claire will be happy to do that but needs a pearl first, or for a bit of time and some luck.

Meanwhile, Claire is taking an hour to prepare spells, and you have a few tasks you already decided to accomplish.
    >We should spend some time fishing for gossip or look at a job board
    >I say we go get a waterproof quiver and bow sheath now. Also some camping/travel/survival miscellany, all in a pack. Keep it in our room in the inn, packed and ready to go the moment we need to, IF we need to.
    >Purchase a healing potion with some of that leftover cash
    >I vote we go to the library and take a look at a map.

You head to the downtown shops and open air market. It's a nice day, warm with a breeze and large puffy clouds in the sky. Instead of ignoring everything else in favor of getting your purchases and leaving, you take the time to listen to a young newscrier on the corner with an inordinately loud voice.

"TRADE CARAVAN AMBUSHED EN ROUTE TO CAPITAL! SHAPESHIFTERS TO BLAME! THE WERE-MENACE GROWING! DIABOLICAL NEW SCHEME SUSPECTED! PREPARATIONS FOR WAR CONTINUE! GET THE FULL NEWS FOR ONLY A TWINGOLD!"

He's interrupted by numerous people people pointing upward and clapping as a flight of striped wasp-like creatures, each twice as large as a horse, fly over the city on a northern heading. A longer look shows the bugs have stingers about as long as your arm, and are carrying riders wearing the same black-on-green stripe--the national colors, you realize after a moment.

A pharmacist's store is nearby, they're likely to have potions or other remedies. At the other corner of the square is a wagon with specialty survival gear being sold out of it. The newscrier has gone back to shouting his wares. There's numerous other established stores and open-air setups if you want to look for something else. You grabbed the rest of your cash from Claire before heading out.

Decide what you want to do short term, and while we're doing that you can discuss long-term plans.

Additional news: The trade caravan was mostly destroyed, with only a few people escaping. The majority of the goods were taken, the people either killed or taken--likely, to be eaten or turned forcibly into shapeshifters themselves. The diabolical new scheme by the lycanthropes seems to be adding were-ogres and were-trolls to their forces; a difficult and slow task, but if successful in any number could prove devastating. Additional forces are moving to the northern region of the nation in preparation for war; this must have been where the fliers were headed. Work to revamp the army's weapons and tactics to be effective against undead is proceeding as quickly as possible, but not half as quickly as anyone would like.

You head over to the wagon. Looks to be waterproof tarp among a pile of assorted goods. The vendor, who seems to be a trapper, greets you with an overeager handshake. "Top of the mornin', sirrah! How can I be of service?"

If the bodysnatcher's anything like us, he's going to wait for us to become powerful, and then take our body. Unless... perhaps he can only spend a certain amount of time within one body. I think he implied something of the sort when we were talking to him. If that's true, he'll want us as a live ally. TempDM, do you know if he's got a possession time limit?

The general consensus appears to be "take one more trip to the sewer, then GTFO of town."

From what you've heard about elves since getting here, it's highly likely that it means Soveliss was one of the few elves to escape some sort of blight or curse that struck the elves at the end of a war generations ago. You haven't sought out details, nor really cared until now.

I think that we should be out of the town within the next 24/48 hours. Dying this early would be a friggin' sin. But not hitting the library would be a waste of a great quest lead. And prevent Claire from being way more useful. We should get ourselves saddled up and head over there to scout out the place and make a plan.

The bodysnatcher did indeed mention some things about bodies getting worn out. It needs to move from one to another relatively frequently, I'd wager.

I'm all for heading into the sewers again, but I also definitely want to do some aboveground work beforehand, if possible. Check out the library, maybe see if we can't find some criminal element, possibly stop by the church of pelor and devour the priest before leaving...

OK, IMO here is the order of operations we should follow:

Talk to the jovial trapper fellow, "Greetings, my good fellow. Would you happen to have any advice on wilderness survival, and equipment to facilitate it? I may be taking a trip soon, and am looking to do so well prepared." (Diplomacy check)

Buy the tarp/flint&steel/basic cookware/dry gruel/jerky/bedrolls/compass/the waterproof bow sheath/map/healing potion (haggle as much as possible, though I don't want us to get bogged down with this part today)

Head to the library, scope it out, case the place, see what info we can get without paying too much, size it up for later (liberal use of detect magic, discreetly)

Find a lone guard, bluff him into a narrow alley, NOM for knowledge of local criminal element. (potentially)

To clarify, I REALLY think we could use some criminal element skills, but we need to know what we're up against. We've got some decent bluff skills, and the appearance of a guard. Maybe we could approach a lone guard and say something like --

"Greetings, friend. I need your help. I was mugged the other night, I survived the encounter but my throat took a hard hit, still isn't quite right. I believe I know where the bastard who did it sleeps, and I want to scope it out. I'm afraid to go alone though, and if we go in force I'm afraid they'll be gone before we have a chance to move. So, do you think you could accompany me? We'll go quietly, away from the main thoroughfares, and just see what we can see. If not, I understand and no hard feelings, but I would really appreciate the help."

But this is a last resort if we can't get information on the criminal element any other way, IF we decide we want to.

    PLAN:
    Buy news
    Go to potion shop
    Buy anything relevent
Spend the rest of the gold on Arrows (who needs gold when you're in the wilderness)
Try to SELL some of our generic shit.

The Longsword 1-handed does 1d8+4 with double damage 10% of the time, coupled with a claw for 1d4+2.
The Waraxe 2-handed does 1d10+6, with triple damage 5% of the time.
Thus, the claw+longsword is slightly better, albeit not by much as we lose bab for off-hand natural attacks.

    So, here's the plan:
    Sell everything EXCEPT the following:
    Longbow + Arrows
    Longsword
    Str potion
Knife (survival knives are still handy, even if not as weapons)
    Rope (rope good!)
    Leather Armor
    Clothes
License and Key (these can't be sold, I'll bet)
119 gp, 79 silver, 92 copper ("I'd like to sell gold." "Sure, I'll give you some gold for it." "Thanks." ... "wait, Ffff")

It's true, we could find a hobo or hermit and take their appearance. We could eat criminals and rogues, people who won't be missed by society at large, people who live dangerously. We should be on our way soon, but perhaps we should try to book passage with a trade caravan. Traveling just us and Claire seems like Bad Idea from the news we're hearing.

And I do think we should sell the studded leather. But in any case, I think we should try to limit ourselves to criminals and homeless as much as possible at least until the last night we're in town. On that night, I hope us to be strong enough to take the wizards, and rob the potion shop.

After that, I would like to do some sewer hunting from the roof of the sewer, specifically track down some gators. After that, scrub off, head outside the city, nom some vermin, see if we can track down another boar or two.

All that done, rest for the night. Tomorrow enact a plan to find some criminal element by getting a guard or four drunk off the four bottles of booze and NOMMING, get some proficiencies, a new appearance and knowledge of the criminal element. Correct.

    >(r)ead the Shapeshifter book while in the library. Read up any information on: Self, Were-bear, Were-ogre, Were-troll, Then return the Book to its rightful place.
You sit down and start skimming through the book. You see absolutely nothing that would fit your own description. There's a rough sketch of a creature that looks vaguely like you did when you first gained awareness, but the entry doesn't match you at all. The book mentions the traditional weakness of shapeshifters being silver, and that a were-creature old enough can exert influence even on more powerful members of its type, especially if it infected them itself. That must be how they're planning to get ogres and trolls (not much mention on this, only that it's possible for non-humans to get the infection). The book mentions that were-bears are normally loners, and that they are far more dangerous than a normal bear.

Your keen ears pick up on the sound of voices trying to remain unnoticed, filter out the bustle of the morning business, and home in on the conversation like a bear would if it smelled a salmon made out of honey. A young male's voice. "There, he's in the streets again. I've gone to great lengths to follow him and make sure." Then the other voice, female, older and drier. "If that is indeed a splinter, your reward will be considerable." Hmmm... the voices came from right around the corner of that building. Just the two of them.

    Action?

Can we go around and try to judge the intelligence/magical aptitude of everyone in the library, then just stake out, waiting for them to leave the library whenever?

Yeah - Sahuagin are hardcore (assuming they aren't Lizardfolk or whatever), but we could prolly take a straggler.

We should swing by the river, get some Gills - sewer water is murky and vile, so we'd be pretty much invisible in it if we stayed low.

I thought we had eaten bats enough for their Blindsense? Well, that's another easy upgrade to remember.

Okay. Two choices we got here. We either make it out of the city ASAP, or we fucking kill these people right here right now. I do not want to be stuck in a trap by someone able to reward people very handsomely in an economy like this.

Walk casually around the first available corner, head straight for a rooftop and see if we can attempt an ambush, jumping straight onto one of them, plunging our longsword straight into their trunk.

Assuming they are kind of out of the way, and we can do this without a bunch of people seeing, that is.

We need to at least get a look at them, in any case.

    >> Anonymous 06/10/10(Thu)22:09 No.10417163
So. Head round a corner, but not into the alley with the voices.
    Climb a roof.
    Observe them.
And wait to see what they do.

There's no point attacking them yet - there are two of them, AND it's very busy, AND it's light outside, AND they're probably powerful. Just observe them ... for now.
