One month to the end of the year. The Locomotive incident weighs heavily on you and your advisers, but there isn't much you can do about it, except aid the government in its pursuit of justice. In the short time that has passed since the explosion, Bane of Forus has practically been besieged by investigators and detachments from local garrisons, thankfully with a total lack of resistance from the locals. What has been discovered is almost cliché: The Earl and a number of his closest associates departed before the explosion and are nowhere to be found. Intelligence is throwing all it's got into finding him, but their efforts might take time to bear fruit.

Despite recent events, you surge ahead, unwilling to let anything so petty as terrorism slow you down. Dreamwood continues its ascent, with the addition of brand-new airfields in Central and Secondary. They are far from complete, serving more as modular frameworks than genuine modern airports, but they are more than enough to deal with your current Zeppelin fleet. The Mittelwerk yard will be occupied for the next month or so overhauling your two 'regular' craft, but the Lilienthal yard is ready to accept orders. Both have been expanded to accommodate larger designs, including the proposed 10-ton cargo transports.

Your alchemists and engineers have isolated the material forming the cores of the Plutonium heaters, and they have produced quite an interesting report. Near as they can tell, the light, metallic substance increases the decay rate of radioactive materials, making them emit more radiation. The capital line and its accompanying telephone connection are scheduled for completion in eight months, with the Cyreth connection following a month later and the Matmer connection just after that. Several small companies are known to be banding together to purchase rail designs. At present, they appear to be looking to establish their own local networks to connect with yours.

A small shipment of primitive but useful flintlocks is scheduled for delivery to a military center by the end of the month.

The device used in the attack was inscribed with the seal of Bane of Forus. The man who carried it held numerous items identifying him as a citizen of the city and a personal confidant of the Earl, and his identity was easily verified, since he was in regular contact with many institutions in the capital and with the government. His body was badly damaged, due to his proximity to the explosion, but there is plenty of evidence, regardless. The room he was staying in, at a local hotel, contained a hastily-burned note from the Earl, which, after a bit of magical reconstruction, was partially recovered, and seen to contain a possible order, directly from the Earl, to carry out the attack.

As far as indications of guilt go, this is overkill, which is one reason why Intelligence is skeptical about it. The Earl and his men are extremely competent, and there is no reason for them to make this many 'mistakes' unless they intended for all of this evidence to be uncovered.

You have a great many research projects running. Are you looking for something specific, or a certain class of research, such as weapons?

There are at least six companies, possibly more, that are forming a sort of coalition to purchase your patents and the equipment/facilities necessary to make use of them. They are placed near the Eastern border, approximately where Matmer and Lokar meet. According to Bem's sources, they want to use the exact same rails as you do, to make integration easy. All they want is a slice of the profits, and they are well-positioned to get them, since you are not expanding in their direction at anything approaching a serious pace.

Radio development is proceeding on-schedule. The current models are crude, with substandard sound quality, compared to Earth's machines. They are bulky, with limited range and even more limited talk time, due to design inefficiencies and battery limits. However, your man-portable types can reach several miles in range, and using Morse mode conserves battery power.

Your telephones, like the radios, are bulky and have low-quality sound, but, since they are not portable, they do not suffer as much from battery problems. Repeater stations must be placed every few miles to keep the signal strength up, but, as long as you have enough stations and the wire is intact, the range is practically unlimited.

Battery development has hit a few snags, but is still going forward, albeit slowly. Your best models are quite large, very heavy, and carry a poor charge. One of your hunters must carry a 20 pound battery for fifteen minutes of talk time on the radio. New Aarmour is known to possess superior batteries, with a better charge ratio.

Charms on the entire aircraft could lessen the weight and mass, making faster travel and quicker maneuvering possible. Charms on the wings could increase lift and provide for on-the-fly adjustments in airflow, also assisting with maneuvering. A built-in light field could serve as a barrier against mid-air collisions and weapons fire. Enhancements to the cockpit or flight helmet could make various parts invisible to the pilot, increasing visual area. Magical parts or magically enhanced machinery could emit a steady force to aid the main engines or enable the craft to hover.

    The applications are many.

They are unclaimed, but they remain wild for a reason. The area is covered with an incredibly thick jungle canopy which is said to shroud the ground in perpetual darkness. Many hazards are present within, among them carnivorous trees, swarms of magical insects, and earth that gives way to pits of fire. The Untamed is said to be the result of an ancient attempt at terraforming gone awry. Since its foliage aggressively reclaims any land cleared or settled, but does not expand beyond its present limits, it is left alone as more trouble than it's worth.

The year ends, one more notch in your history books. On your orders, a fair is organized in Central, attracting most of Dreamwood's thousand-plus population as well as nearly triple that amount from elsewhere. The streets swell with carts and tourists, and the militia is out in force, showcasing their brilliant uniforms and providing a deterrent to those that would harm your citizens. While you speak with the dignitaries, bureaucrats, and nobles who seem to extend in an insufferable train from your manor, the common workers find themselves in a wondrous world of entertainment, centered around several massive tents and a few wood-and-iron rides driven by the latest and greatest steam engines from R&D. Everything is perfect.

In the approaching night, cut back by the blaze of mighty arc-lamps and scattered torches, you stage a battle, putting your immense magical power to good use. Great beasts and large armies arise from the snow, their soft forms staggering jerkily forward into the waiting weapons of children and their allies, the Samurai and his associates. In short order, the adversaries are defeated, and a vast display of fireworks rounds out the evening with a brief telling of the Battle of Endor. You gain many admirers and even more recruits this night.

Zeppelins 1 and 2 have finished their overhauls and can now carry 6 tons. Cargo 1, with a 10-ton capacity, is the newest edition to your fleet, incorporating all the latest technology and sporting signs painted with enormous advertisements for Dreamwood and BemCorp.

Acknowledged. Sillasull is willing to provide 40% labor and sign for fifteen mid-size locomotives up front, but they are also looking into the possibility of purchasing the patents and handling the whole thing themselves. Their terms are not unreasonable, according to Bem, but the people they have hashing it out are shrewd, looking for the most profitable arrangement.

Armed Zeppelins incorporate modular weapons ports that can mount tri-barrels or repeating rifles. Currently, there is not much to arm them with, but the development of artillery will change that.

Armored Zeppelins use steel plate for armor, though, like everything else, they are modular, so exchanging steel for tungsten, Magma Steel, or an alloy would not be difficult. Armed Zeppelins are armored as well, the designs are named as they are simply to differentiate them.

Oh, okay. What about the possibility of loading them with a bomb bay to allow them to bombard the enemy from high above? 6 tons of bombs is a lot of explosives! And zeppelins can reach flight ceilings higher than primitive planes, so they should be safe. Unless the common enemy magic user can hit a target more than 5000 feet above them..... most mages can't do that, right?

Anyway, that's what I've been pondering. Obviously, from such a height, and with wind, bombs could easily deviate wildly, so such bombardments would be best used well into enemy lines or even going for enemy cities behind their lines. The long flight times that zeppelins are capable of sustaining means that it would be possible for an aerial fleet to bypass an enemy army and defense force entirely, and them bomb an enemy city with relative impunity.

That would be quite simple. They are already designed to drop bombs, though those currently available are relatively inaccurate.

The common mage is unlikely to hit a target at that distance with anything substantial. However, multiple mages working in concert would do better, especially if they used summoned creatures to attack, or forced the ship lower, or something like that. All military designs have provisions for light field defense, but mages are required to generate them, as magelocks for that purpose are not yet available.

The implications for warfare are profound, as the government knows.

DoD smasher idea. Talk to the Conclave about their last attempt to farm DoD's for Magma steel armor. We could create a closed top holding pen (not anywhere near Dreamwood) that they could be summoned into. It would be made out of concrete with silica tiles lining the interior to act as a heat shield.

Pic is a cross section of a trench leading out of the holding pen. When a DoD is in the trench the weight is dropped. The trench and the hammer should be concrete coated in tugsten and have steel reinforcement.

    >However, multiple mages working in concert would do better, especially if they used summoned creatures to attack, or forced the ship lower, or something like that.

Ah. Then in that case, simply being so high that they don't even know they are there seems like a good tactic to avoid retribution.

They're looking into ways of producing Magma Steel without involving DoDs at all. Farming them brings too much potential for accidents, and it is expensive. Attempting to summon DoDs is likely to have unwanted additional effects, not to mention the difficulty of doing so with Perin's low supply of fire mages and relative lack of fire magic.

    >>11038003
As long as anti-scrying fields remain in place, a Zeppelin could avoid detection up until the moment it attacks, and retreat before exposing itself to retribution. However, this is not a perfect strategy. Once the enemy gets used to the idea of air attacks, you can bet that they will establish appropriate defenses in a hurry.

So does the third year pass into memory, and the fourth year begin. An Ornithopter Carrier is completed, and set to running drills with its motley assortment of company-made craft. Various other aircraft production facilities are planned, but as long as BemCorp controls the original company yards, you can produce ornithopters and hot-air balloons elsewhere. Facility expansion, which will enable the manufacturing of Zeppelins in places other than Dreamwood, is proceeding rather slowly. In the absence of further orders, the yards are running on your Ministry's direction. An additional cargo craft has been produced, and two more are scheduled.

Building on your rifle design, R&D has completed a light artillery prototype. Compared to standard small arms, it is incredibly destructive, but against 'fortress' targets, it is actually rather ineffective. Research is going into armor-piercing shells, but in the meantime, light artillery is available as an anti-personnel and vehicle armament.

Numerous advancements have been made in other areas, none particularly substantial, except in engine miniaturization. R&D#3 has further improved the hybrid magical steam engine, making it usable for propelling small craft, such as ornithopters or ground vehicles. It is vastly inferior to an ICE of the same size and weight, but usable. It is also quite expensive and time-intensive to manufacture, which counts more as an annoyance when you consider how useful it is.

Earl Yucian's body has been discovered outside Saint's Hammer. It appears that he and his fellows traveled on foot all the way from Bane of Forus, with inadequate supplies. The emaciated corpses of he and his party were arranged in a triangular formation in the forest. All appear to have died of natural causes. Intelligence's investigation will conclude in a short while, as all the provably guilty persons are deceased.

On your order, Zeppelin 2 is loaded with supplies, equipment, and personnel to be used in the establishing of a secure testing site far from Dreamwood. Anti-scrying fields, your protection from prying magical eyes, shimmer just outside the visual spectrum as the ship departs, carrying you and your comrades into the North. The humming of the engines is comforting, a reminder of the faith you have in the technology of your great city. Some of the men seem unsettled about going so far into the wilderness, and you calm them as best you can.

In your search for a suitable location, your navigator spots something just on the horizon, an arrangement of broken stone pillars leaning together. The markings on them are unmistakably those of the Frost Giants, but all you have seen of them is a few abandoned campsites. The Zeppelin edges closer, bringing still more pillars into view, along with the ruins of the foundation of some enormous structure. The remains of walls and what looks to be a road are present as well, cutting abruptly off at the edge of a perfectly hemispherical pit that you'd surmise is larger than Perin's capital.

A rather long detour takes you back into radio range, and you proceed to report everything you saw, answering quite a few questions and asking that it be relayed to the Conclave. To no great surprise, you are told that the Frost Giants were the only known civilization to build that far out, making the ruins a good candidate for Kharok or some other ancient city.

Upon your return, you see the pit and the surrounding pieces of stone in the exact same position as before, sitting there like they haven't been disturbed in centuries. The Zeppelin circles as you and the others take stock of the ruins, observing as much as possible while the researchers record the inscriptions in little books and map the remains as best they can. Putting your knowledge to good use, you translate portions of the inscriptions, almost immediately confirming that this appears to be what's left of Kharok. Since the frost demon is supposed to have absconded with its followers, taking the whole city with it, the pit is probably a sign of its handiwork. There is nothing left but the edges.

The light is fading. You have no trouble seeing in the dark, and the Zeppelin is perfectly capable of running its arc lights as long as the engines are up.

The arctic and antarctic circles prepresent the extent of where there is sunlight at different times of the year. In Summer any place inside the arctic circle get's 24 hour sunlight and in the winter 24 hour night. Summer in a hemisphere is caused by that facing being exposed to more direct sunlight at less of an agle. The closer to the equator you go the less this sort of seasonal change occurs. If there was no axial tilt there would not be any seasons.

Alright then. It's probably a passive defense system put in place by the Frost Demon. We can't discount the idea that it might have left more...active defenses in the area.
We should return with a full archaeological team and a squadron of military zeppelins.

Which reminds me, enqueue transports and couriers in our Lilienthal Yard for expanding our aerial network, and have the Mittelwerk begin construction of the Armed Military zeppelin. Once we have a full squadron of each type of military zeppelin (Transport, Gunship, Carrier), we'll present them to the Perin military as a demonstrator squadron. We'll call them the Red Wings.

Wary of staying any longer, especially at night, you board the Zeppelin, artifacts in hand, and suppress an involuntary shiver. It is impossible for you to feel the cold, but fear is another matter. The sense that you are being watched is difficult to shake, but it fades quickly as the Zeppelin comes about and departs. No one else on the craft felt anything, and it was only once you touched ground that you were effected. It's disconcerting, but nothing you haven't dealt with before.

The hours-long flight back to Central passes in what seems like minutes as you and the scientists engross yourselves in study and discussion. You have seen a piece of your race's distant past, and you've brought part of it with you. Even though you weren't born in this world, and you've spent less time in your current body than your Earthly one, you feel connected. In any case, the history of it all interests you quite a bit. The few things you gathered are not overly glamorous or significant, but they are still a piece of a great city, something to be learned from.

It is extremely late when the Zeppelin finally docks, settling nicely into the airfield dock. The snow parts softly under your feet as you set off, thankful that that odd feeling hasn't followed you home. After dropping the artifacts off at the campus archaeological department, you head back to the manor for a well-deserved rest.

Normally, a squadron would be about 12-24 aircraft, if it were an Air Force.
Zeppelins, especially the way we're using them as gunships, are almost like naval ships, so in that sense, a squadron is an ad-hoc grouping of combat ships.

For now, without a proper Air Force, I think we should use naval terms and terminology for now.
The Red Wings will eventually evolve into a true Air Squadron or Air Wing when we have enough planes, 'thopters, and zeppelins.

New Aarmour accepted your 'generous' assortment of blueprints and engineering notes with pleasant thanks, returning your courier with specifications for various lenses, housings, and the like, with several working models of each. The microscopes they've developed are crude by Earth standards, but more than sufficient for the current tech level. R&D and the school both appropriate the designs, and in short order, the lenses are implemented in numerous practices. They are invaluable for fine machining and spotting imperfections in complex machinery, not to mention the obvious utility in the biosciences.

A project to isolate and produce penicillin is underway, along with accompanying projects related to bacterial and viral study and engineering. Most of these are far-future concerns, but a few hold promise, considering the still-limited nature of your tech base.

Another would spread 'chaff' charms in its wake on a target run, acting like a cluster munition. I still say we need to look into ways to harm gods.

Because our quiet pantheon implies that they are busy. And we've also had implications about the Bleeding Sun, which is a BADNOTNICE god.

My guess is that the BS is kicking our pantheon's ass. And that means we're gonna be fighting one of the most powerful gods by ourselves.

    WE NEED MAGIC NUKES!

Imagine a Forusian combat mage's surprise and terror, when a squad of black-armored humanoids with glowing red eyes appear from the dark of night to attack his unit's camp. The incomprehension when one of those Red-Eyes lifts something to their shoulder, and it fires a projectile into the center of the camp, then explodes, spreading some things into the air. The mounting fear when the mage realizes that somehow, he is now in the center of an anti-magic field, and none of his fire magics will work.
Then the men of Dreamwood's Panzer Corps lift up their MG-42's, and using their machineguns as a farmer would use a scythe, reap the lives of Forusians like ripe wheat.

The end of the second month has come. One standard transport Zeppelin and one military transport have been completed. The latter joins your carrier as the second craft in the Red Wings squadron, the only military air force in the known world. The government, incredibly satisfied with the airships you built for it, is offering a new construction contract, one for a dozen 8-ton fast transports. The down payment alone would be enough to fund the construction of two more yards, but the technology specifications are rather exacting. None of them come straight to your best available tech, but if the equipment was reverse-engineered, it would give the government a sizable jump from what it has now.

Your military air school has been established and is training pilots for the first generation of combat aircraft. The instructors, veteran pilots themselves, bear a startling resemblance to the 'fighter jock' caricature, which makes the whole thing seem somewhat funny. After all, you're laying the foundation for Tomcat squadrons in a world that can't handle steam trains without you. Still, with the rate everything is progressing, you may need those sooner than you think. You wouldn't have thought you'd get this far in a few short years, but Perin has exceeded your expectations at every turn.

Archaeological teams, accompanied by militia for protection, are ferried to the ruins of Kharok and back near-constantly, sometimes taking you along. Very little magical items remain, but there is a great deal to be learned from the artifacts that are recovered, and short excavations have turned up even more interesting things, such as the presence of a sewer system, and something that looks very similar to a power distribution network. So far, you have proven to be the only one affected by the strange feeling on the ground, which makes you think it was put in place specifically with Frost Giants in mind.

Fortunately, the Conclave was in a generous mood when you got back from the latest dig. They agreed, with some stipulations, to let you see Erivrus. No recording hardware, must be escorted by military personnel at all times, anti-magic field present at all times, the typical heavy security. Courier 2 took you over, to an empty field far from whatever sensitive installations the military operates. Though you don't know how much good that does, since something the size of Erivrus is hard to miss.

You thought he was looking quite well as you disembarked, falling in with your excessively armed escort. There was no trace of battle damage, and he sported a large quantity of shiny new armor over every surface, along with several additional turrets and hatches. Upon seeing you, he immediately began walking forward, startling everyone but you. Sometimes you forget how dangerous he would seem to people who don't know him.

“MAYA! SO GOOD TO SEE YOU AFTER SO LONG. AS YOU CAN SEE,” he wiggles a leg, “I'VE HAD A LITTLE WORK DONE.” His armored belly reverberates with a laugh.

Erivrus, I know the ice demon will come back one day. I feel it in my gut. We'll all have to be ready for him.

From what you've gathered, the plan seems to be to form a few squads of comparable living engines to make sure he doesn't get out of line, and to ensure that if he does, there will be something out there with enough power to take him down before he destroys everything.

We'd have to be sure to get the right mentality down before an encounter with any. Both for us to know how to act and how they'll react to us. People from Cyreth or Matmer are more likely to have had encounters with them before so we should see about talking to survivors or anyone with experience.

If they want wealth we can offer it to them. They want power there are ways to get them to that. The real trick will be convincing them of different ways to get to those things. They need to know that they were cursed, that they were somehow wronged and that we're trying to fix it. We dont tell them that we're a human in a Frost Giant's body.

We can, and probably will have to (land considerations, security, collateral damage), place the experimental facility in the Unclaimed Lands north of Cyreth.
It's probably a good idea to get governmental permission in any case.
I can only see it as a win-win for Perin. Either we cure the Frost Giants of their savageness and they're no longer a raiding threat, or we end up wiping them out with our experiments.
We'll probably want to bring them in as part of our County if we end up successful.
Air and rail travel will make the unclaimed northern territories no longer 'too far to care about'.

Yes, there is a curse on the Frost Giants. It's what drives them to savagery and barbarism, and prevents them from attempting to recreate their civilization.

The Frost Demon has most likely either broken it for its followers, or found some way to control it. It has the sum total of the Frost Giant's magical knowledge when it took over Kharok.

How should we go about it? Offer a possible cure or treatment if they would just tell us how injured the Prince is? I mean, we're no doctors, but maybe hearing the problems that the Prince is having could jog our memory.

Part of the problem is that the Lord and the Prince have pretty much been in isolation. The only ones that would know what's going on would be the High Lords, who had some access to them before now, and possibly the direct servants, who would have a lot to lose if they leak information.

I think a straight up request to know what's going on would work. Don't promise that we can help, but merely that knowing what's going on might help us remember something useful.
Hell, what if the problem turns out that all we need is some penicillin, which we're already working towards in our labs?
