You return to the inn, taking a round-about route. At some point along the way, Scinnari is suddenly standing beside you. "Well done." she says, sounding impressed, "Payment, escape, and overpowering his spell. Everything you wanted, and you revealed nothing."
"Indeed." you say, mind elsewhere. The tome you left in your room seems like a good bet in terms of learning magic, And you certainly wish to; it's benefits and capabilities have been amply demonstrated.
"Perhaps you would be interested in further pursuits tonight?" Scinnari asks. You deliberately miss-understand.
"Of course." you say shortly, as you climb the steps of the inn. Sure enough, you room is as you left it. Scinnari immediately goes to disrobe; you immediately go to the desk, and appraise the book before you. Old. Well worn. For all you know, you just stole Kazmiri's favored magical tome. Perhaps one from when he was an apprentice... Opening the first page, you begin to read. Dry, but intelligent and, it seems, perfectly paced. Shortly Scinnari returns, leaning over your shoulder. Her bare... skin, is distracting, but you ignore it and keep reading, resolving that you won't speak first.
"You wish to learn magic? Perhaps I could be of assistance." She says after perhaps twenty seconds.
"Really?" you say, letting your interest color your voice. You say nothing more, though, certain that there are strings to be attached.
"But of course.. I would desire something in exchange." she says. Odd. She almost sounds nervous.
"What?" you say, turning another page. A pause, longer than you'd expect. She seems genuinely nervous.
"To... bear you a clutch." She says eventually. You turn slowly.
"You ask much." you respond, voice dark. "And presume much."
"Be that as it may..." she says, worried, but evidently ready to face whatever fate she may have sown. |
