Spartans, small-ish map, not much land. Initial colony on a nice bit of river valley/coastline. Plenty of minerals available but colonization space is limited.

Get stuck in a war with of all people, the peace keepers. have to hold them off, eventually signing a peace treaty on pretty bad terms after losing bases to mindworms as well as the peacekeepers. Tensions rise as I expand along their boarder, planting forts and getting a road network in place whilst neglecting base facilities in favour of churning out a ton of combat units.

Eventually the tension breaks, and back to war we go. Initially losing a dozen units, offensive stalling on the monsoon jungle, where the mass of Peacekeeper bases lay. Eventually a hard-fought slugging match breaks as I get a stack of laser (yes, thats as far as things had got) rovers through the frontline, and then keep pouring them in like a flood. Game over peacekeepers, Spartans go from the weakest to the strongest faction within a handful of turns through violence.

Hijinks with global warming and terraforming
    - Sinking enemy bases into the sea using super formers
    - Passing all global warming bills and drowning out the world.
    - Shooting tectonic missiles near your own coastal base to make it a mountain base.
    - Blocking off the rain from enemy bases by mountains.
-Planet busters and tectonic warheads to bulldoze and level areas on the map.

    Hurray for out-teching everyone!

One particular game I played was as the Nautilus Pirates. I did my usual sea advance, the only difference being I decided to go for an early land crawl. Meaning lots of Buggies, and Sea Formers.

So between a mass of gunboats, Rovers, and some Sea Formers to lower areas into the sea to deny reinforcements, I found myself kicking ass. Then I got the Nerve Gas Helicopters+Drop Pod Garrisons and a repealed charter...

I never liked the expansion factions.

All the original factions had big, coherent ideologies; ideas one could form a whole civilization around, ideas millions of people could live and die for. Peace, Harmony, Strength, Knowledge.

The expansion factions... they weren't civilizations, they were subcultures. Minority factions you would expect to find in the shadows of the major factions. The pirates were just bandits; the idea "what if there was a faction that was mostly sea-based" is interesting, but you can literally do that with ANY FACTION. Or all factions, once you flood the world. The cyborgs are the University with certain techs and social choices. The Cult of Planet is a crazier-than-usual group of Gaians. The Drones are the Hive, basically; that's what they'd turn into, anyway. The hackers are University undergrads; you can't have a civilization of all hackers, not everyone is going to have those proclivities.

The expansion factions didn't have enough ideas new enough or big enough to stand on their own.

Well yes, he's ALSO that... but he's fucking brilliant, and charismatic enough that the entire SCIENCE faction (and keep in mind how egotistical and fractious scientists are) follows him. Also, if you listen to his quotes when they come up for research and projects, he's surprisingly funny and always curious about what his subordinates are working on.

Think about it. She's a graduate student, spending what little personal time she has working on mind-machine interfaces in a borrowed lab, when the door opens. She looks up and it's the PRESIDENT OF SCIENCE, the man who built the Unity and is personally responsible for more advances in the past two decades than any 5 other researchers put together, and here he is, hands clasped idly behind his back, secretary following nervously behind him. He calls her by name (probably has her file up in his specs but he KNOWS HER NAME,) asks some insightful questions about her project (when her professor can't even be bothered to care,) suggests gold instead of copper in the tertiary growth phase (BRILLIANT,) cracks a goofy joke about hydrocarbons, tells her to keep it up, grins, and leaves.

So she goes back to her dorm room, hides under the covers, and touches herself while staring at his author's photo in the back of For I Have Tasted The Fruit.

Second, at any given time the Uni is gonna have the highest tech level. My best chance of scoring a holo theater, good food, and a personal sex droid is going Uni.

Most importantly, Uni will have the highest tech level, and a high tech level results in more talents. My best chance of being a talent, of NOT being a nobody, is in joining Uni and getting a first-rate education and maybe some int-improvement treatments.

And he'll want to write a paper about her, no, a book, and they'll write it together and present it at the colloquium and get an award and there will be a big party and he'll hold her hand when they stand behind the podium and her stage fright will be gone, because she engineered it away and because he's there, and then there will be a reception and he'll dance with her (gotta get the proprioceptive muscle control circuits perfect so she can dance perfectly and he'll be so impressed) and then afterwards they'll both be tired and giggly and they go back to his room oh god oh god...

The Planetfall mod for Civ4 makes them work kinda like that. The original factions are there at the start of the game, and the expansion factions appear once certain conditions are met. This doesn't make the Pirates or Data Angels make any more sense, and the Drones just kinda appear rather than result from riots (although if a base riots, it has a chance of converting to the Drones), but the Cult of Planet is done excellently.

I love playing as Morgan. That +1 to Economy? It's FUCKING GOLD. On its own, it's not a big deal... but when you're using the Wealth value you get another +1 to Economy, bringing your total to +2... which means that every square you're working produces an extra unit of energy. If you've got civilians on fifty tiles, you get an extra fifty credits that turn. And the next turn. And the next, and the next, and the next... You will have so many fucking energy credits you won't know what to do with them.

Morgan can BUY EVERYTHING ON PLANET. He can rush-buy his own troops, pour so much cash into science research he can fucking out-tech the University, keep a fleet of probe teams around to subvert enemy troops and steal any techs his neighbors have, and build base improvements all over the goddamn place ALL AT THE SAME TIME. The city is falling. Sun-warmed fungus mats spread up alloy walls, pitting the metal, leeching and dissolving it back into Planet. The newborn many-mind has many dreams, and some need iron ions. The towers and walls, domes and spires, are empty; the people who lived here are angels now.

On a hill above the city, under the shade of a twisted tree, a girl sits and watches. Her flyaway dandelion hair is as white as her simple dress, born with her from the fungal womb when she asked the world to give her a body again. One finger idly rubs the side of her head, missing something.

Soft footfalls behind her, an ambling pace. She turns. Her eyes widen, but her face is otherwise still, haven forgotten the trick of expression. "Why are you here?" she asks, voice carefully neutral.

The man chuckles. "Oh, you know. The same reason I do everything I do. Curiosity."

She examines him carefully. He has his peculiar spectacles, as always. Planet must have assembled them for him, atom by atom, as it incarnated his new avatar. Stranger, though, is his appearance. Fit, but at least forty. Why not demand youthful perfection? "Explain further."

He cocks his head to the side, peering at her through his colored lenses. "Investigating an anomaly in the experimental data. Results observed do not match the predicted model. Therefore, I was wrong about something; there is something I do not know!" He grins his crooked grin, familiar from a thousand book covers and cid links. "How can I ignore a chance to learn?"

She stares at him cooly. Within, an unfamiliar fluttering sensation. "Am I that anomaly?"

He smiles, and sits beside her with a grunt. "Just so! The maid of machines, the posthuman postergirl, leaves the uploaded supersociety in favor of flesh? Very strange, very interesting! Even your implants are gone!"

"That was not my intention. I wished to be reincarnated as I was before your Transcendence Project. The planetmind erred." She turns from him, looking out at the ruined cityscape once more.

"Or perhaps editorialized. No, wait, I percieve the root of that problem. Is it troubling you unduly? Can you describe your sensations?"

She blinks. "I am... distressed. I am singular; only myself and no more. My decision-making is impeded by illogical bias, the needs of the body and hindbrain. Fear. Confusion. Seratonin release from observation of sunlight on city. Desire for tactile contact."

"Like so?" He reaches out experimentally, puts his hand over hers.

She jerks away, tears welling in her eyes. "Re... request permission before such behavior."

He frowns. "I am intimately familiar with living in a body. I do believe I did it longer than any other human; I was mature when we began construction of the Unity, after all. I've found it requires a certain graceful humor and humility. But this is... everything you were working so hard to cast away. And you come back to it. Why?"

"That is... That is sensative information. If you desire it, you must offer information of equal or greater value in trade." She wipes her nose on the sleeve of her dress.

He smils. "Ah! That's much more like you. I was beginning to worry. What would you like to know?"

"Wa... worried? Ah. Why." She is staring at him again, her face composed, but her eyes red. "Why did you never join me? Us?"

He quirks an eyebrow in surprise. "I thought you surely knew. I never joined you because there was no need; I never considered our factions seperate."

"What? Not... we were at war! People died!"

"Yes, war, yes, but I never considered you an enemy. You put forth a comprehensive proposal for the future development of humanity, of sentience itself. I was fascinated, of course, but the difference between science and blind ideology is that scientific ideas must be carefully tested, proved before being accepted! Peer review is essential. And so, under my direction the University adopted the null hypothesis; that immediate implantation and upgrade of all humans was an inferior strategy, and that gradual, incremental, organic improvement of mankind was a better approach. And then the test proceeded; which society produced more discoveries? Won more wars? Which triumphed over all adversity?"

"It was... a test? We killed hundreds of thousands for an experiment?"

He sighs. "No more than would have died in pointless wars without our interference. Their loss was for knowledge. To advance mankind."

She pulls up her knees and buries her head between them. "You set me a test. And I failed."

"Not in the slightest! Your missing implants prove that."

She raises her head. Her face has finally cracked, twisted in pain and confusion. "I... do not understand. Elucidate."

"You requested a body as it was before the Transcendence Project began. You got one."

"You were working on the project so early, so long ago? Or... no. Me?"

He grins again. "Quite so. I, and through me the Planetmind, date the beginning of the Transcendence Project to your pioneering work on the integration of human sentience into nonhuman systems. Which is why you popped out of the mushroom looking just like the graduate student whose lab I wandered into one hundred and twenty five years ago."

She gapes at him, her pale cheeks turning pink. "You... remember."

"Remember my first meeting with the cleverest woman on Planet? Most certainly!" He reaches for her hand again. This time, she does not pull away.

    "And the Transcendence is..."

"As much your work as mine." He is leaning towards her now. "Would have cited you when I published, but the college was too busy apotheosing to accept papers. Profuse apologies." Their faces are very close.

A rumbling crash from below is followed by a blast of warm air. A tower has collapsed, and is burning turquoise. Around it, the fungal mats are twisting, ridges raising in a great spiral.

She gasps. "I have never observed that behavior before."

His grin is wolfish, delighted. "Ohh, nor have I. I wonder if it's magnetic?"

"More likely a biochemical reaction, a planetary allergy..."

"Let's go for a closer look!"

They run down the hill together, eager to assault the mystery, hand in hand.

There is nothing quite like sending in a half dozen columns of infantry with artillery and automated air support (I could really never bother with manually controlling most air units; it was really too much of a pain in the ass) to completely wipe out an entire continent.

I played a game of Alpha Centauri for the first time in ages a while back. This time had torrented Alien Crossfire. Played with the cyberdudes and focused all my attention on expansion and improvements, then fortifying my borders and improving the shit out of everything. Then when the nasty aliens came knocking on my door I ended up pushing them back half a continent every few years (their empire spanned two or three), the last getting a bit unfair as I had essentially immortal landships and battleships capable of sinking their entire navy several times over. Finally won with a diplomatic victory after realizing my population was several times that of the remaining three human factions.

My biggest city was in the middle of the Inland Sea (or whatever, huge lake) with every square having kelp and that underwater mineral upgrade. It was stuck in a perpetual golden age pumping out late game secret projects in only a couple of turns each.

One thing that annoyed me was that the Free Drones who I allied early on to act as a buffer kept spamming me with hordes of crappy troops that cost a lot to support. I ended up giving all the ground units back, but using their air units on suicide attacks, as I had bothered to build only a few of my own.

What do you guys think would be a good way to play a game as different to that as possible? I was thinking of trying a rather aggressive approach with the Cult and mindworm-only armies.

His cheeks start to flush. He's all too aware of the incredibly intent look she's giving him. Oh god. That silk shift she's wearing is leaving FAR too much to the imagination. He can't help but notice every time shift of her body as she breathes. Every night, he sees her. Every time he feels the warm air in the evenings, he feels her breathe on the back of his neck. Those eyes. Watching. Always present, just below the surface of his mind.

He squeezes his eyes tightly shut. He wonders off-handly if it's possible to hate someone to death. Why did Lal have to call now, of all times? His irritation is almost intense enough that he doesn't notice something cool, and soft, and utterly RIGHT touch his hand. Deirdre speaks to Lal. He can't bring himself to comprehend what she says to him. The words simply don't reach his mind as words. So soft, and calming they are, though. He wonders bitterly if the viewscreen is large enough for Lal to see what his fellow faction leader is doing to her poor intern.

He wonders if it's possible to pass out from someone just holding your hand gently. That shouldn't happen, and yet it's how he feels. Her gaze is fixed on Lal's electronic countenance, and yet a single moment doesn't pass where he can't feel what feels like the sum total of her mind fixed upon his, like a bug under a beautiful, majestic, utterly hypnotic magnifying glass.

    "Don't move. Just sit".

Her voice snaps him back to attention. The words somehow make sense. Lately, he just hasn't seemed to find the will to resist anything she's said. Requests for a fresh cup of soycaf, last years recycling reports, or one one terrifyingly sublime occasion, an opinion on a new necklace. He sits, mutely, beside her. How much longer can one woman talk on a simple council decision?

He still feels her hand on the base of his neck. Stroking him, so soothingly. It's hard to think of anything but that perfectly formed hand. He looks up, in a daze. He sees her lips moving, but as before, her words mean nothing to him.

He thinks. Or tries to. The initial interview, the cautious acceptance of a grad student, a bio-sciences prodigy to the much fought-over assistant position. The endless nights studying, and pondering over exactly what was needed for a given project. He lost track of the point when his thoughts drifted from soil nitrate levels and oxygen fixation, and started being gentle rocked by that beguiling image of her sitting at her desk, going over some paperwork. Just her. And the scratch scratch scratch of her pen on some meaningless document. He'd heard far-off reports about the Gaian empath guild. The support and esteem that the Lady held them in. But it was always someone else's issue. His duties kept him her, beside her, and the plants she lavished her attention on.

Those beautiful pale fingers are still there. They gentle brush a tuft of hair behind his ear. The don't leave there. Inch by infuriating inch, her fingertips explore the edges of his face. His cheek, his ear, his lower lip. For the hundredth time in as many years, Lal continues to babble meaninglessly about some ethical issue that's come to his attention, and just like the other times, Deirdre tells him what he wants to hear. How just, and compassionate she is. How clear her mind is. He's glad he can do this for her. Leading a faction is such an awe-inspiring task. If she feels the need occasionally to have something to run through her fingers. Someone warm to discreetly relive certain tensions, even one as prosaic as excessively cool bedsheets, then he's happy to do it.

He remember's proof reading a research paper on the nature of telepathy. The curios of science. Future implications, the spread of psionic ability. He remembers how clearly he saw the delicate letters of her name, written there amongst the initial wave of test subjects. He remembers the terror he felt as he saw the pict-logs being uploaded to the Gaian datalinks, images of planets eternal guardians curling around her hand, and running freely over her toes, friendly, and above all, obedient.

He wonders what that must feel like. Whatever her speeches suggested, the sheer thrill he saw on her face when her personal boil devoured the screaming face of the Morganite probe team suggested an almost hidden nuance to her environmental agenda.

He couldn't fault her. What person wouldn't relish having such perfect control over such a wonderfully engineered organism? To have something so utterly efficient at her beck and call. He remembers the profound effect the footage had on him. The way her smile lingered in his dreams.

"Symbols are the key to telepathy. The mind defines itself through them". That's what the paper espoused. What symbols defined HIS mind, he wondered while reading.

He could only think of one symbol, at the time. He pretended the realisation didn't scare the hell out of him.

He didn't know what, or how, or why. But ultimately those questions didn't bother him so much as the when. He remembered the nights near the beginning. Waking up in a cold sweat, thousands of invading ecological terrors fading away with the morning light, only to find Her there, sitting beside his bed, her eyes closed, and her palm gently cupping his face. The relief when he realised that she was real, and that she had woken him from the terrible dream.

The little questions, the petty shows of concern. Did he have enough pens? Would he like to finish early today? How did his weekend date go? She was his boss, but she never took advantage of his loyalty. She was there when The Flowers Preach was overrun by Spartans, willing to listen to his fears about his parents. She was there when the confusion over a new problem threatened to overwhelm, soothing him with calming words, and perspective. When Maya left him, her cold, absent eyes barely looking at him the last time, she was willing to talk to him about it. He didn't find it odd that the time consisted of him weeping, his head gently cradled in her lap. It was an act of the moment. Who justifies what they do in that sort of situation?

The warmth of her heated office floor permeated up through his toes and legs, flush with the polyfur floor covering. He realised that her conversation with Lal had finally concluded. Some sort of argument about some sort of canceled retroactive virus engineering project they'd embarked upon several decades earlier. He looked at her, happy that she'd defused the situation. How he wanted to hold her for just a moment. To send her worries about Planet, and Lal, and the Vendetta, and all of it, away. That her worries would break away like the skin of an onion, to be seen, and embraced, and understood. She smiled down at him as his eyes closed. The first Gaian Acolytes prayed murmured from his lips. He realised a moment later that his words matched hers, just as quietly. She rose to her feet, giving his cheek a final stroke.

She moved back to her desk, that same sad smile on her face she had from time to time when she looked at him, when he'd done a particularly good job on a task assigned, or before she left in the mornings after ... that. The thought still made a shiver run down his spine. Maya. Joanna. Even sigrid, decades ago. None of them had stayed like she had. Whatever she thought of him, the idea of her leaving made him sick to his stomach. When would the internship end? Just what exactly did she have planned for this ... thing that they shared. As if sensing his distress, she heard him call his name. Awkwardly, he got to his feet and returned to his desk, beside hers. She grinned, and shook her head. He knew what she wanted.

He smiled nervously. Compelled by her smile, he walked over to her desk, and calmly sat on the edge of it, facing her. His stomach did flip flops. It always did, no matter how anticipatable her various ..inclinations became. His time in the rejuv tanks, keeping his face and hands just as pefect as the day he first met her. The hours studying the latest developments, that she'd asked him to become familiar with. He gave a little jump. After a morning of dealing with the chilly environment of the biolab, her hands were still a little cold. He bit his lip, and felt her fingers curl around him, physically, and otherwise.

He couldn't move. That was normal. She was smiling. So was that. Tug, brush, squeeze. She'd let him gasp, at least. He could never understand it, when they were like this. She could scarcely exhale over him before he.. reacted. She laughed softly as he blushed. He could scarcely keep his mind from her, let along his body. She stood. Standing there, calm as a willow in the summer breeze. She felt her teeth gentle taking a hold of his ear. The soft musk of her perfume as her soft sari rubbed against his chest. His trembling hand found hers, and clenched. She let him. So perfectly understanding, she was. He was made for her, he thought sometimes.

"You WERE made for me", she says breathily. Even one as psionically dexterous as Lady Deirdre Sky could still lose herself occasionally borrowing moments from his nervous system. At that point he was never in much of a position to speculate, but in the quieter time afterwards, he wondered how much of what he was feeling bled through.

Cold, soft, firm, and inevitable in their motions, she moved around him, up and down, her nurturing fingers playing over his length like a new plant growth she wanted to encourage.

It began. Rapidly, he saw memories of her. Previous encounters. Moments of eye contact. Simple brushes of skin, recollections of kind words, of effective orders. They flowed over his mind like the light of Alpha Centauri itself, confusing him and reassuring him in equal measure.

Time seemed so pointless, when she was like this. He wondered why she did this. Giving thoughtlessly to him. Since that first moment when he felt her hand gently holding ..him, after a peaceful night of wonderful dreams, he'd fretted and fussed over her motives. Her attachment to him. How she was able to so perfectly render him speechless.

Her discretion was flawless. Whatever jealous looks the other Gaian's gave him, he was never connected to The Lady in anything other than an employeer/employee capacity. He was beautiful. He'd been told that he was. He never saw his appeal. Before her, he felt as clumsy as a crawler, and as overlookable as a strand of fungus.

He felt her pace quicken. He almost screamed, such was the cold fire that blazed along his nervous system. The gently swirling images of her held strong in his mind, driving his earlier apprehension away.

He made a sound, scarcely removed from a squeak, as he abruptly came in her hand. Her free hand cupped the back of his head, gently pulling it forwards into her. He felt her perfect lips on his forhead, soft and reassuring.

She held the hand he had willingly defiled to his lips. Smiling in his heart, he remedied the problem. Slow, luxurious kisses dotted each inch of her finger, each tiny wrinkle in her palm.

She smiled at him, before holding him close, his pants skill messily unbuckled. He held her in return, promising in his mind that he would always be there for the Lady of the Gaians. He felt her response, deep in his hindbrain.

Was it real? Did it matter? Here, and now, united by genetics and by empathy, they were together, whatever the physical reality.

She pulled away for a moment, her eyes glossy with almost-tears. Distressed, he leaned up, and kissed each blasphemy away. No sadness from her. He wasn't much, but he could attempt just that.

She smiled happily as he did so.

"He can say what he likes", Deirdre said firmly. The boy nodded.

"You aren't wrong. Whatever his precious UN charter says, Whatever lies Miriam or Zhakarov whisper", Deirdre spat out, anger clouding her features.

"Just one. Was that such a crime? On this place, so far from home". He reached up tentatively. He touched her face. Stroked her perfectly shaped hair.

She looked down at him, before smiling, and bowing her forehead to his.

"I won't let them take you away from me...", Lady Deirdre Skye said under her breathe, the morning sun playing over her tanned skin.

    "...My good little Genejack".

But when I did it was almost always Gaians and Spartans who were the top dogs, they would both grab an almost absurd amount of land and then they would drown the opposition in bodies. Me included. Then I started playing Spartans and wiped out all opposition in glorious waves of soldiers.

The first game I ever played, I decided to try Spartans. For years I was the weakest nation, struggling to get by. After building a huge army I couldn't support for long, I blitzed over the neighboring Gaians. This made me a true world power. Then it became a race between me and Morgan to absorb the remaining nations. The game ended with a narrow victory after a long Cold (and sometimes hot) war with the Morganites.

    I was hooked thereafter.

Yang's "Gift to Industry" was a genetically engineered worker who's greatest satisfaction was in performing menial tasks, who's to say his "Gift to Entertainment" isn't a similarly engineered whore.

Of COURSE high level Morganites and University-ites have them. Morgan even makes a couple of references to courtesans in his speeches, he's probably be A-OK with genetically engineered ones. Miranda froze, hardly daring to turn around. That voice, that deep voice artificially pitched to be several decibels lowers than any human could achieve. It could only be the voice of one of Gaia’s Landing’s many many Green Police.

“You have violated section 1503.56 article 10 of the Green Economy code, and done untold damage to the local ecology of your area, 10 years in the isochambers”
“FOR CUTTING DOWN A TREE! I HAD TO! Every other day I found on of its branches had fallen on my cube complex, who knows when the whole fucking thing would have collapsed!”
The officer was covered from head to toe in body armor, but if it was possible to detect a glare underneath it all, then surely he was glaring
“*We* know. The old growth trees in your area must maintain a perfectly scheduled life cycle, and your wanton act of destruction has endangered your ecology, and the health and safety of your fellow man. Take her away”
Screaming, kicking, clawing, and crying, Miranda was lead away to the isochambers.

So... when you consider the "Our Secret War" game quote, it's canon that Dierdre uses nightmarish psychic braineating deathworms as a deniable terror weapon.

Which raises the interesting question: who is the most evil Alpha Centauri leader? Santiago is a military dictator, granted. Zakharov experiments on humans; Yang experiments on his entire society, though he follows a strange and logical set of ethics. Miriam is the fucking Ayatollah. So who's the worst?

“Tell me” said Morgan, his hands clasped over his face, “are there any woman on my staff who *aren’t* pregnant?” “Just me” said Catharine, chair of Morgan Industries Social Planning. It was Mission Year 65, 2165 in the old calendar. Proper Free Market planning had allowed the economy of the Morganites to explode like the force of a thousand suns. They were the richest, happiest, and most comforted faction on Planet, this in turn had lead to a population boom as men and women, secure in their economic future, began looking towards more sensual pleasures.

This had been all very well and good, at first. But now Morgan Industries was reaching a point where its housing facilities were stretched to the limit trying to accommodate each new generation of young Morgans.

“The Social Planning Council has proposed-“ “I need that pool” “I wasn’t going to-“ “and the golf course” “well how about-” “and the forest most of all.” “Besides,” said Morgan, “these proposals will only treat the symptom, not the disease. The fact remains that even if we could find houses for all out people, we would still be hemmed in by our other facilities. Water Purification and Air Circulation or running at or near maximum capacity, and Power Distribution can’t expand further without incurring us immense cost in- well everything. The fact is we need to slow down growth and wait until we are ready to expand smartly and efficiently.”

Finally, more benefits for soldiers, we can entice them into the military and let them die against the blasted worms.” He put down his pencil and stood, looking out the window to the city, *his* city, *his* faction. “The Invisible Hand of the market guides us ever towards a better future, but sometimes it needs a little push in the right direction.”

Zakharov, Morgan, and Santiago are amoral. Good and Evil don't really factor into their decision-making.

Dierdre and Miriam are hypocrites. They think they're more moral than anyone, but they're perfectly willing to commit atrocities.

Lal is the only one who's actually trying to be GOOD, rather than advance some personal ideology. He cares more about the people of planet than anyone else.

Yang is... fucking bizarre. Ethics interest him deeply, but it's mostly stuff like "if you genetically engineer a slave to enjoy being a slave, is that good? Certainly it contributes to a peaceful, productive, and harmonious society."

But I detest hypocrisy more than Yang's experimentalism, so I'm going to say Miriam and Dierdre are the worst for going all mindworms and human waves of doomed, underequipped crusaders while thinking they're the good guys.

I like to imagine that Miriam is deeply conflicted about what she has to do. If the other factions wouldn't be so god damned amoral, she'd be at least content to let them live in relative peace. But instead they clone mind worms to make psychic horrors to unleash upon their fellow man, they turn their own citizens into experiments or slaves, they allow the democratic processes which (in her mind) CAUSED the destruction of earth by allowing the vocal minority of amoral glory seekers, merchants of death, and others who feed on war to drag their respective factions into ever more terrible wars.

She though when she landed that she could begin an era of peace, but one look at what her fellow factions were doing told her that peace could only come after the most terrible of wars.

I think she and Santiago truly believe that peace is best maintained by a strong military and mutually assured destruction, in both nukes and ground forces.

Being conflicted about the wrong you do does not make it less wrong. I imagine all the faction leaders (except possibly Santiago) regret killing; they all wanted to found a peaceful utopia based on their ideals, just like Dierdre. And they all, like her, found they needed to fight for what they wanted.

But some weapons are worse than others. This has long been accepted legal and ethical theory, and it still holds up. Bioweapons, especially, are often placed at the top of the naughty list; there's a serious moral difference between seizing a city with armed soldiers and destroying it by giving everyone ebola. And dying rapidly from having all your blood take a hike is fucking peaceful compared to being paralyzed with psychic mindrape terror and watching helplessly as a hideous worm eats through your face to lay eggs in your brain.

I loved Alpha Centauri, just because you were able to concoct up the most fantastic tales about events.

For instance, I remember playing a game as the Peacekeepers as being particularly memorable. I was the largest faction, but the Hive was the second largest. We shared an enormous border that stretched the length of the supercontinent that almost everyone was on. Right in the middle was the giant crater. It was originally an undeveloped zone, but as my border with the Hive grew, we found ourselves suddenly in a rush to develop and claim the crater. I built a new base near the center of the crater to the north, while Yang built another base on the rim of the crater. Almost immediately, a silent probe team war broke out as the both of us started sending out probe teams to try and break the other. But that quickly turned into an all-out war, with the Peacekeepers and Gaians (my stalwart ally against the Believers) vs. the Hive and Spartans. And the focal point for this entire war was the Crater.
    cont.

The thing about Miriam is that in the logs and the quotes she actually seems reasonably sane, especially the further through the game you get. A few hundred mission years in, and even Lal is cloning his dead lover and making spooky machine interfaces. If she were only a bit more sympathetic when you actually encounter her for real people wouldn't hate her so much.

The first phase of what I liked to call the "Garland Crater War" was definitely in favor of the Hive, which had far superior military technology to my Peacekeepers. My base in the crater was surrounded by Hive forces, and for a few turns, it seemed as if the Hive might actually break through. But soon enough, the tide changed, and reinforcements from the north broke through the Hiver lines and pushed them to the southern rim of the crater. It was a very violent war, and ended in a glorious climax: Yang fired a Planet Buster in an attempt to deny me the entire crater and that base. A good chunk of my forces died, the southern rim of the crater was destroyed, which opened it to the sea, and I'm pretty sure it took out Yang's base (which I had captured).
Of course, that had consequences for Yang. His Spartan allies turned their backs on him, he lost a good part of his forces as well, and it isolated him from everyone else. Seeing this as a desperate attempt to hold me back (and the fact that I couldn't keep up this war any longer), I asked for and got a peace treaty.

In the end, this cost Yang far more than what he gained, because I used this war to push for a diplomatic victory. Perhaps the other factions saw the logic in unifying peacefully, or maybe they saw what could happen if they let brutality triumph over reason, but in the end, the Peacekeepers united Planet with diplomacy.
And that's why I love this game.

A lot of secret projects are like that. IIRC, there are a few other nice ones at that tech level also, so it's hard to get them all.

It's a big advantage, but what about stuff like the Bioenhancement Factory, or The Weather Paradigm? Or The Virtual World, if you're University.
    >> Anonymous 12/13/10(Mon)00:02 No.13132332

Oh yeah, some are definately pretty crazy but the cloning vats is insane if you have orbital hydroponics labs and hab domes. The output ability multiple size 25-30 bases is insane. Not to mention the votes...

At least, that's my experience anyways.
    >> Anonymous 12/13/10(Mon)00:04 No.13132356
    >>13132332

Probably true, but I suspect that by that stage of the game, actual expansion that involves colony pods is minimals, and most bases are already pretty large. Food's another big thing. I like the orbital things, but there always seems to be more important projects to do for my big cities, and my smaller cities never have enough output, or they have more important low level stuff to do. So cloning vats ends up being limited by food.

It is a pretty spiffy project though. I always liked The Hunter Seeker Algorithum. I usually play University, so the immunity is great. Or the Data Angels, in which case knowing that nobodies immune is a great help. Elite Probe teams as soon as they're build, mag-leving all over the place.
