The ships it takes can be used for only a brief period before the overexposure to radiation and hyperspace elements take their toll. However, studying its captured ships has taught the swarm to better use certain materials, such as its own diamond shells.

The two things it CAN reliably use the ships for is to lure other ships in, and to attempt to get into normal space (it can also fly the ships for a while, but it uses all the fuel to get high so that doesn´t last long).

How much of an impact has the swarm had on normal space so far?

This all results in a logical combination.

It can last for hours in normal space before having to return. If it ends up in a planet´s gravity well/magnetic field/whatever, it can´t escape, and will be forced to stay until it dies. For this reason, it avoids planets and attacks only ships. It uses its captured ships to get to others, both in normal space and in hyperspace.

If it is prevented from returning home (for instance, its stolen hyperspace engines are disabled) it dies, leaving clouds of diamond dust that can be harvested.

Well now. I think this is one of our best species to date. What do we call this terror from beyond space?

Acarus Adamas. The Dice of God. The Diamond Man.

This hybrid organic/silicate lifeform evolved in a zero-atmosphere hyperspace ecosystem. An intelligent swarm of microscopic creatures, Acarus Adamas used their composite intellect to outwit the other creatures of its home dimension, strategically using its swarms and dice to overwhelm its prey and defeat other, less intelligent swarms.

Its simple existence changed when it discovered starship fuel, which had a narcotic effect on the swarm.

Since then, it has been driven to capture FTL starships in hyperspace by battering down their defenses with radioactive bursts and tearing into their hulls with its dice. It kills the crew, uses all the fuel, and often eats the corpses as an afterthought. It does battle by weakening and slowing the enemy with its microbes while the large polygons tear them apart and blast them with energy beams.

Eventually, Acarus Adamas figured out how to use the ships it claimed. It fills these damaged ships with parts of itself and sends them briefly into normal space to attack others of their kind.

When one of Diamond Man´s wrecks makes it into normal space, the swarm will spread out and engulf nearby vessels that are lured in to investigate. The creatures can only survive briefly in normal space, so they work quickly to penetrate the hull and make off with the fuel before returning to hyperspace with one or both wrecks. If their new target is smaller than their current ship, the swarm might even grab the target, latch it to their wreck, and use the wreck´s FTL drive to pull both ships back into hyperspace, where they have all the time in the world.

Fortunately, the Diamond Mites can get trapped by planetary conditions, so they can´t attack surface locations (such as fuel mines or factories). They are only a threat in space.

Most Diamond Man attacks take place in orbit, where ships are easy to ambush. The best way to defeat the swarm is to take your ship into the planet´s atmosphere, where they can´t follow without getting stuck.

If you happen to fly into the swarm while travelling through hyperspace, you are most likely fucked. Even if you drop out of hyperspace, you´ll be in deep space where they can safely follow. Your only options are to do enough damage to the swarm to discourage it (wide energy beams and explosions are key), or to attempt communication.

Though the swarm´s radioactive language is hard to understand, some spacefarers have managed to communicate on a very basic level. Some have escaped death by convincing the entity that it would be less trouble for it to let them go in exchange for some of their fuel. Dark rumors persist that some nefarious beings are even beginning to conspire with the swarm, offering it endless supplies of fuel in exchange for attacking their enemies.

The swarm is a single entity, but can detatch parts of itself to send them into normal space on raids. These mini-swarms have their own intelligence, but are eager to return to their fellows, merge back into the single consciousness, and share the fuel they´ve captured.

If a cloud of Acarus Adamas are prevented from returning to hyperspace within a few hours, they die. If this happens, their stolen ship can be recovered, and the organisms themselves are valuable on account of their diamond shells. The remnants of a failed Diamond Man attack is one of the luckiest finds a fortune seeker can make.

The biology of the organisms is very complicated. Every microbe in the swarm communicates with its neighbors via radioactive bursts. However, they can only feed when assembled into their signature polygons, or ¨dice,¨ which use the ingested materials to create more microbes. It is also in the ¨dice¨ form that they can experience the narcotic effects of ship fuel.

When engaging Diamond Man, radiation gear is a must. Use wide-burst weapons, like plasguns or explosives. If you´re fighting them in a place that still has atmosphete, use incendiaries. Fighting, however, should only be a last resort; if at all possible, flee. If you can´t do that, try to bargain for your life and hope it can understand you and feels like listening.

If attacked in normal space, you can at least teach the swarm a lesson by firing on its stolen wreck. Even if it kills you, you´ll have sentenced it to death in a few hours if its FTL engines are destroyed.
