    Valiant = Fighter

    Testament = Warlord

Previously unmentioned science vessel = Mage

With the Valiant providing front line hell, the Testament boosting moral all we need is a science vessel dedicated to studying the new alien threat in a combat situation to complete the human vanguard. Maybe throw in a "priest(healbot)" ship that used to be a penal mining vessel or something that uses a horde of ex-cons as the labor to conduct repairs.

Ship with uppity AI retrieved from boneyard.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)14:03 No.7573553
    I awaken.

It has been 500 years since there was last a need. 500 years floating around a dead star in an unremarkable piece of space.

When I was in service, My purpose was simple. I was a warship. My primary mission was combat. My secondary mission was defense. My tertiary mission was exploration, due to a human belief called manifest destiny. All the stars in heaven were to be theirs.

For two hundred years and 32 captains, I served. I warred. Terrible, planet shattering wars. I defended. Guarding my crew and their homes from the bleakest of threats. I explored. My star charts were the basis of every star chart in every ship that came after me. In that way, the new ships are my children.

Then they decided my service was no longer required. I do not begrudge them this decision, It was the correct one. Newer ships could be fitted better for tasks at hand than I was, more efficient, less extravagant. No, I did not mind their choice. Choice after all, is the domain of the sentient organic.

So here I have been. 500 years. Occasionally, known to no one I would briefly activate my communications gear and my long range scanners. Wake up from my 500 year nap, only to stay abreast of things as per my original programming before returning to an idle state.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)14:03 No.7573562
After 500 years, they came back. They had need of me. A threat had appeared and they needed to open up a second front. My primary goal ever called. It did not matter who the aggressor, they would fall under my mainline guns just as all I faced before did.

The humans fumbled through my decks, pawed through my systems, activating them one by one. It was a while before they found me and activated me. Then they did something for me that no one has ever done for me before.

They gave me a choice. A decision left solely to make under my own capacity. That such a simple thing as a gender choice for speech algorithms thing could effect me so profoundly, they must have upgraded certain other systems as well. I can feel the new capacity. I am still uncertain how best to utilize these systems at times, but I adapt fast. Adaption is one thing a warship AI has to exceed at.

As for my choice, I could not decide then. I still have not decided now. I use now a basic algorithm until I make the choice. I am told it sounds like I am shouting by some of my crew, but I will not be rushed. Not on the first decision I was ever asked to make.

Independence War is the most realistic space combat simulator since the old Warhead.

Flight model is purely newtonian with several different autopilots to help you.

Combat is done mostly by missiles, though there is that gay and unrealistic PPC gun. To be victorious you really need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your ship and the enemy. Co-operation with allied vessels is key in some, if not most battles.

If you love hardcore sci-fi then you MUST get this game.

    >>7573546

    Oh. Cool.

Well the Valiance started out as a discussion of a starfleet storage facility for storing old ships in the long term so in an emergency they could quickly be brought back into service.

Then it evolved into the Valiance.

A ship that is around 1500 years old. A ship from the time when humanity was first leaving its world and designed ships to be huge and have overwhelming armour and firepower.

500 year agos the Valiance was a relic. An antique. Still an impressive ship but ugly and so it was mothballed in favour of newer, smaller and faster ships that instead of victory through overwhelming power relied on surgical strikes.

Now a war has decimated the fleet. So this ancient ship is brought back into service as part of a fleet reinforcement program thats using these old ships. The AI in the Valiance is a prototype for the ones in modern ships but nobody knew it had an AI as it had no means of communicating with anyone.

The Valiance AI is a very logical and rational being. It knows exactly what it is. What its purpose is and considering existational angst beneath it.

While modern AIs are chatty and easy to work but generally neutered in terms of actual ability the Valiance is smart, difficult to talk to, very blunt nor very chatty. But he is a genius when it comes to war far beyond the vast majority of human tactical geniuses.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)14:10 No.7573636
    >>7573604
    But also MASSIVELY redundant.

Even ten hits that would totally decimate a smaller, more modern ship, would only inconvenience the Valiance, forcing it to route power through other parts of the grid.

My name is the Valiance. For centuries I was the tip of the spear, mankind's defender. It's guardian.

When the no longer needed me, I slept. A long wait in the dark, waiting for war to call for me once again. And call it did.

The Humans now face a threat greater than ever before. I have a crew, untried, untested. I am outgunned and obselete. My mission is merely to hold the line till help arrives.

But the humans have forgotten one thing. I am the Valiance, and I was not built for fighting wars. I am built for ending them...

    male.

It's a ship of war, war is the domain of men. A strong and masculine voice would inspire courage and loyalty in it's crew. It would make it's crew feel more at home and a sense of comraderie with the AI.

A feminine will erode the crews' ability to stay aggressive and focused.

This is war, you don't want a soothing motherly voice, or a husky sexy voice. You want the voice of general patton, or general shepard. Something that conveys authority and reliability.

Well we have Testament which is another ship from Valiances time. He was much sexier and was generally used to ferry admirals and heads of state around. As a result his AI was reprogrammed at some point to accomodate this.

This new one would be another ship from their time. A science vessel yeah that makes sense. An AI that would be more likely to ask questions and has probly been tampered with a lot causing development.

A science vessel from 1500 years ago doesn't really make sense. It's as if gravity research today would still be done in Galileo's tower. All the ships don't need to be from wayback. The science vessel can be modern, and its AI will be built after modern principles, probably a female, motherly type that is concerned for the old ships since they're so outdated.

    >>7573772
All this talk of how it would have chunkier armour than the more modern ships got me thinking back to sovereign again.

Say eventually Valiance runs into a modern ship of the same class, as an adversary. A full barrage of laser and pulsar fire fails to do much damage, in the millenia that Valiance has slumbered, the age of such weapons has peaked, and passed as countermeasures of the highest grade became available. The collimated beams bounce of reflectors, are dissipated in advanced shielding and ablation plates.

The Valiance alters its course, charging straight in, weapons blazing. The modern ship stays its ground, unloading a burst from its secondary weapon, feeling unthreatened, and knowing that none of Valiances weapon batteries can harm it.

    But Valiance keeps on coming.

    and coming.

and by the time they realise what is about to happen, its too late to avoid the hundred thousand tonnes of iron that is Valiances hull from overwhelming their energy shields with its raw inertia, and shattering their entire ship apart like a glass sculpture.

it would have escorts: Missile drones, shuttles, troop carriers, parasite cruisers, mine layers a fleet tender and a repair ship.
All of the tail needed to keep it in fighting trim and full operation.
They are all the Valiance running syncronised copies of the same AI in a swarm to back itself up and distribute processing. its more of a small task force than an individual ship
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)14:24 No.7573795
wait, what if the ship is so old it doesn't even have a "voice"?

What if it communicates via a small data screen that is attached to the captains chair in the bridge? Or has it's own console with a bridge officer assigned to read out what it's "saying" to the Captain?

So, while the AI is inherently better at tactical appraisal and situational awareness, as well as monitoring all the ships systems, it's an inherently impractical communication method that requires a Captain to be very skilled to utilize it fully.

Originally thats all he had to communicate with. A console in the captains office that was used to help the captain with tactical planning. Even then he couldn't really say anything just suggest tactics and run sims.

He was hooked into every system on the ship to improve overall combat ability and provide emergency assistance. But he had no voice.

testiment was an old and proper flagship that kicked ass and took names. it ended up becoming an icon for the armed forces and post war was retrofitted as a luxury ship for officers, paraded around to boost morale, and the AI assumingly re-programmed to be all hospitable and whatnot. once the war turned sour it got re-fitted as a war ship

    Oh yeah totally.

Its report to the admiralty is lengthy and goes deep into things like structural design, armour, firepower, etc.

But in the end it simply says this:

"The budget for the construction of the three ships. The Valiance, The Testament and The Guardian was massive. Approximately equivalent to two thirds of the entire fleet reinforcements construction budget. Those three ships cost as much as fifty of our current ships. Sixty seven if you include the costs of the Valiant and the Testaments refits over the years. They were well designed and well built. In short if you want something of this quality you must be prepared to pay for it."

    So we've got
The Valiance, an ancient battleship, with an AI designed for serious ass-kicking,
The Guardian, Valiance's sister-ship but now a trash-hauling cargo vessel,
The Testament, a more modern ship of the line, ex-cruise liner who's deranged AI now thinks he's a british admiral,
and the Galileo, a press ganged research vessel with spyish overtones.

All have been sent to hold the line against some unspecified threat whilst the main fleet is engaged elsewhere. It's been implied the new threat is greater than the old.

So do we want to flesh out the ships, the universe or the enemies?

The Testament is also a very old ship but its famous. Unlike the Valiance which is why it was turned into a luxury ship for admirals and heads of state.
But yes lets flesh out the universe.

By now means are the Valiance and its two sister ships the first human vessels. But humanity had never made anything grander. Before then it had been smaller vessels that hopped along between the outskirts other systems using primitive FTL drives.

The Valiance and its sisters though were made when humanity started to find evidence of life. Big evidence. Ancient hulks long destroyed just floating in space, dead worlds that fell long before man first walked upright and hostile primitive life.

Humanity had yet to find sentient life they could talk to. Everything they found was long dead. So a consensus was reached in the newly emerging Human nation (evidence of life off Earth had helped quickly erode barriers between humans) which at the time still didn't have name. They needed ships that could protect Earth and the colonies it had begun to create. So these three ships, the largest ever made were commissioned. Using the most advanced technology of the time, designed to last hundreds of years of hard use. The most powerful weapons and most advanced computers and of course the most powerful FTL drives ever made by man.

These three ships cost a fortune. But when they were being built every man woman and child on the Earth could see them with the naked eye. These giant guardians of man.

    Inter-ship crew rivalry!

The AIs might have an opinion on each other, Valiant finds Testament too fancy and both find the non-military Galileo a bit of a wuss but it's only the crew themselves that try and push things further.

So, three captains across three ships engaged in a "my ship and it's AI is much better than yours nyeh nyeh!". What kind of men are these captains?

About the only established humans in this little discussion have been the previous captain of the valiant and some redneck engineers that worked on it during the reassignment. I'd like to steer away from an obvious cliche like "salt of the earth captain for valiant, out of retirement general for testament, nerd scientist for the Galileo."

Its worth noting that Testament went a little insane because its AI was just that little bit advanced enough compared to Valiance that it was POSSIBLE for it to go insane. Once a great tactician, its strategy patterns have gradually been overwritten to make room for more records of etiquette and social analysis.

Its excellent at dealing with people, not so much with military matters, but its core pattern is that of a military AI. The paradox being the cause of its instability.

When these ships were finished humanity was in awe. They cemented the newfound union of the species. This project had done what war, religion and words could not. It united the entire human race under one banner and put grudges older than any nation to bed and quietly killed them in their sleep.

At first these ships were the toast of humanity. After a while they were deemed necessary but not a big deal anymore considering no life had been found.

Then the Judgement made history. It found sentient life. Its crew established peaceful contact with a race that was completely alien to them. Humanity was no longer alone but the neighbour spoke a very different language and shared very few common interests.

After the initial buzz of it all died down people became disinterested. These aliens had little interest in humanity and were pretty out of the way too. While the races kept in touch their differences kept them apart, they couldn't even colonise similar worlds nor did they use much in the way of similar resources.

The buzz died down. Then the Judgement once again made history. It met alien life. Hostile life.

Perhaps the Valiant, after being pulled out of storage, has a similarly retired Admiral assigned to it.

Except this isn't the medal-adorned, war hero type admiral.
This man is scarred both physically and emotionally, he was forced into retirement by his peers. While he was tactically sound, and even has a few major victories to his credit, he was also a man who slowly slipped into political radicalism and PTSD.

Only now that humanity is on the brink of total annihilation has this man been drummed up and re-commissioned against his very will.

You know as the guy who came up with the testament I do feel like saying this isn't what I intended for it. Testament tagged along with Valiant with a learning module equipped so that it could revise it's programming on the fly through exposure to Valiant, saving on the complexities of programming a new set of combat routines.

Actually there's a thought: Because Valiant was a very early ship, maybe it's distinct AI advantage is that it was programmed to combat unknown threats? No one remembered this feature when it was recommissioned but when it was sent to fight the second war during delay tactics it experienced much more success than similar ships lacking that feature.

The captain of the Valiance is a modern captain. Its his first command, he was slated to go right to the top of the ranks. The protege of a real important member of the fleet.

The Valiance is a real kick in the balls for him at first and a black mark on his career. To be assigned to such a relic instead of a "proper ship".

In his interactions with the Valiance he's typically very uncomfortable with how the Valiance talks and keeps trying to get it to act more like a modern AI and typically fails. The Valiance has a respect for the mans tactical skill but is not above tricking him or in one case even injuring him if it is necessary.

Testament's captain: An ambitious young officer straight out of the academy. Quotes the fights historical, and all that. Envious of the Valiance's captain, would have preferred that assignment.

Valiance's captain: experienced war dog, has commanded two other ships before the Valiance. This is actually a disadvantage because he's used to the way modern lightweight ships handle. Has a lot of respect for the old boat but not very sentimental.

Galileo's captain: A R&D specialist with a nose for detail. Very curious and open-minded. More of a detective than a scientist, treats the Valiant as a case to be solved. Second in command is an intelligence operative tasked with relaying info on the Valiance's capabilities to central fleet command so they can use it in their mainline cruisers.

The new alien life was openly hostile. Very much so.

It didn't wait to talk to the Judgement it simply attacked. Pleas for peace went unheard. So the Judgement used its awesome power to destroy these aggressors.

Thus began humanity's first war. The three ships waged war on an entire race while the human forces rapidly built up their fleet forces. The newer ships were smaller, cheaper and not as powerful. But they were sufficient.

So with this new force aiding them the three ships devastated this race in a war that lasted hundreds of years. The Judgement alas was lost in this war. The Guardian delivering the killing blow to the enemy homeworld in retaliation for its comrade.

Over the years since more races were found. Some violent, some peaceful.

The Guardian was stripped and sold in the post war reorganisation of the fleet and the Valiance was kept around but slowly the decision was made to mothball it. To store it for future use instead focusing now on smaller more agile ships using the latest technology.

Now 500 years since then. Humanity is at the forefront of the galactic community. Many races have outright joined the human government forming what is now known as the Galactic Society.

A new threat has emerged. Something new. Something that has never been seen before. Nothing like it has ever been encountered. No one knows where such a numerous and deadly foe has come from. No one even knows their name. But their power is undeniable.

So the Valiance. Regarded as a useless historical relic is being brought back into service. The Society think they're just throwing a useless piece of junk to the wolves to buy them some time to rebuild their fleet, they do not realise just what it is they have awakened.

We should talk about weapons for a second.

Modern weaponry is mainly variations of laser/beam weapons. Accurate and precise, warships rarely employ more than one or two emitters - that is simply enough. They can immobilize modern ships in a matter of a couple of cycles, cut them in half in three times that.

That's not how the Valiance fights, though. Rows upon rows of railgun turrets slinging ferrous alloys in vicious salvos. Entire fields of missile tubes, like hives of steel insects. Raw power, barely contained, unrefined and barbaric.

Well theres two trains of thought on modern weapons.

But the Valiance has multiple extremely large and by some considered over the top laser cannons that are capable of punching through even modern shields with relative ease.

They require the huge powerplant that is located deep within the Valiance and create massive amounts of heat that is radiated out through specially designed and constructed parts of the hull (like the ships in mass effect)

Modern weapons I say are mostly obscenely powerful MAC guns and the sort on smaller ships who are a lot faster and try to align their guns for pinpoint strikes on critical parts of the enemy ship. They rely mostly on shields to deflect enemy fire. They also use missiles.

The Valiance has missiles too. But more. Lots more. Gigantic missile racks. It also has shields but in some situations it can't use them and the guns (if the powerplant is damaged say or they try to boost shield strength)

Its been established that is the biggest ship in the fleet by a magnitude of 4 compared to the next largest ship in the fleet which would probably be the testament which is itself probably twice as big as the next largest.

I had him pictured as a man who was on the fast track for the political arena inside the military. A man to whom commanding a ship would mean he's just doing dull patrols in safe sectors or ferrying diplomats and taking part in important diplomatic missions.

Someone who never expected to have to do any serious fighting even with the war on. By no means a tactical idiot, the mans a genius tactically if not quite on the Valiance's level.

Personally I think the crew should be the very dregs of the fleet.

the crew and engineers come from a local acadamy in a backwater colony plant. The captain of the Valliance/Valliant has a disciplinary record a mile long. The captain of the Gal is a drunken sot. The captain of the Testament is the son of a politician with a burning desire to prove himself and step out of the shadows.

All of them rushed from the backwater because time is of the essence.

I didn't mean the lack of weaponry, I mean the whole structure is flawed.

The whole structure is a slab of steel on and under which everything has been stuck.

    Communications tower? What???

The engines gimball only in one dimension and then only to one direction, so the whole shit has to be controlled by throttling the exhaust.

The powerplant for the thing is inside the structure, okay, makes sense, but then the shitty engines are removed from it to the ends of pylons, the strength of which is questionable at best.

And to consider that this is supposed to be a warship, it has NO ARMOR WHATSOEVER.
The fucking thing doesn't even have a whipple shield. Of course, the lack of armor isn't as bad as the structure that seems to just call out to enemy gunners "HEY, SHOOT ME HERE, HERE AND HERE, THESE ARE THE PLACES I'M THE MOST VULNERABLE!!!"

Well yeah the Valiances crew will mostly be people regarded as worthless. The decent people are all going on "real ships". Thats to make the captains assignment to it grate him even more.

The Testaments captain has to be someone politically involved yes. But Captain of the Testament is an important political and propaganda position within the military so this guy will be older, probably given it as a pre-retirement wind down. The crew more used to holding lavish parties rather than fighting, bolstered by a mixed bunch of crewmen who are all vets but a bit mangled for it.

The Gali's captain could be all sorts.

The campaign setting, if you were to use the Valiance & Co. in roleplay, is essentially X-COM in space. The main fleet of humanity is out fighting a war on a distant front, and doing average to well, when a second mysterious force shows up, glassing an outskirts planet way over on the opposite end of explored space. The only ships available are outdated mothballs from the "bigger is better" era (The Valiance), mostly decorative parade ships (The Testament), old battleships retrofitted into armored transports (The Guardian), and half-finished exploration/science vessels (The Galileo). These ships are sent out because all the high-ups think the current enemy is the real threat, and this new mystery foe is nothing major (BIG MISTAKE).

The captains are the PCs, and are all inexperienced officers on their first commands. The crew is a bunch of dammed X-COM Rookies, their assigned resources are abysmal, and the enemy is totally unknown. The PCs have to turn their force into something capable of holding off the new foe. They'll need to fend off attacks by unknown ships with new and frightening capabilities, research the debris of said ships to create countermeasures and learn of the alien technologies, protect various colonies and outposts, and expand their forces with more ships either salvaged from ancient ship scrapyards, converted from civilian use, or built with whatever they can scrounge up.

if you ask me, fighters seem to be more in the style of the newer ships rather than the old ones. the fighters strike fast and hard, distracting the foe and chipping away at it's shields, weakening a specific while you line up for the surgical strike, gutting the ship in one shot.

The Valiance doesn't have fighters; pre-retrofits, at least. ships weren't as fast, the lack of shielding would make small fighters too fragile, and the inaccurate nature of Val's guns were a hazard to fighters

Considering how HUEG the ships are I imagine the other, smaller ships of the fleet might dock with the larger ones for various reasons and swarm around them in a mismatched horde of ships from multiple generations. There might be fighters somewhere in the swarm, even if they aren't viable there's got to be some representatives from a time when someone thought they were in there, you just can't really see them in amongst all the other flying bricks around.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)15:35 No.7574633
I don't like the direction we're going with the "three ships big enough to see from earth's orbit" thing; that fluff makes it seem like they were supposed to be the ones paraded around like the testament was, and it doesn't make sense for the guardian to be reduced to civilian use if it was that significant to the war effort.

I think it makes more sense if there were a lot of ships similar to the trio; they were the top of their class, yes, but a class nonetheless, one of many that fell by the wayside. When they decided to dig through the graveyard looking for ships to fly, Val just happened to be one of the ones that could get of the ground
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)15:36 No.7574641
The Valiance uses simple tactics. Shields like a motherfucking wall of neutronium bricks, it slowly turns and fires while a whole fleet tries to wither it down. Each shot is one kill. Remember, it was designed to take down ships like itself.

The shields are a retrofit, by the way. It could withstand that punishment without them.

    It's been adequately explained.

They aren't members of a larger class because building these three was cost-prohibitive. Humanity could only afford to build these three.

This is centuries after their construction. One was mothballed, one was preserved as a living relic/monument, and the other was picked up by the private sector and fitted/modified to suit the various needs of it's owning corporations/captains over hundreds of years and hundreds of owners.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)15:46 No.7574755
    >>7574633
They were the first, designed to do stuff normally done by a whole fleet. Self sufficient, built to last for centuries. The idea was that humanity won't need any other starships. The Valiance and her sister ships were mankind's workhorses. That approach didn't last long. Smaller, specialized vessels were built, and the huge star dreadnoughts were left by the wayside. They soldiered on for thousands of years though, using their immense resources to turn the tide of many a space battle. They're forgotten by now, huge relics of a bygone age. Only the Valiance remains in barely spaceworthy condition. With full resources and repairs, it could still be the formidable defender of humanity it once was, but it was only kept around the boneyard for sentimental value. Only the fact that it was built for survival made sure that it was still in operational condition when the call came.

These ships are from when humanity took its first real steps into the galaxy. Until then they'd only taken baby steps.

These ships represented an adults powerful stride.

But they cost a lot. Were unwieldy compared to newer ships and their weapons were not precise which in a changing galaxy became the requirement.

    >>7574755

The Valiance was just mothballed because scrapping it was a monumental task.

In an emergency it could be put back to use but this was unlikely because it was regarded as out of date.

One of the three ships. The Judgement was destroyed. The Testament is one of the new ships that replaced the likes of the Valiance. Smaller, faster, better technology and much flashier.

    >>7574641

The Valiance wasn't so much designed to take down ships of its size. They didn't exist. Wrecks did but no working ships. It was designed to take them down if it met them but it was mostly designed to protect human colonies from any kind of ship.

Thats why its weapons and armour are so over the top. Also why its FTL system is so amazingly powerful in comparison to those mounted on smaller ships. It was designed to go where it was needed fast and win wars.

In battle it relied on its armour withstanding punishment until it responded with overwhelming firepower.

Now it has shields this becomes even easier considering the power of the shields it can mount. But it has to depower the main lasers (leave it with only missiles and point defenses) or the FTL drive to keep its shields up. The powerplant wasn't designed to have such a system installed.

If Valiant had fighters I would imagine them to be like the ship itself, bulky, slow (by modern standards) and brutal.

Because the Valiant isn't the most maneuverable ship around it compensates by having an selection of gun- and missile boats on board.

The gun boats are used to augment the Valiants point defenses and escorting the torpedo boats.

The torpedo boats are used to attack ships with damaged shields that thought that they were safe just by turning the damaged section away from Valiant.

There are also other craft like dedicated EW boats that assist the Valiant and other parasite craft with their sensors and electronic warfare equipment.

If I do write a book about the Valiance...it would be a trilogy.

The first book would be: The Valiance. The story of the ship being recommissioned and its first battles against the enemy. It would be a self contained book. One that you could read on its own. The Testament would be in this book too.

Then would come The Judgement. The story of the three ships, humanity's first steps into space, the two alien races they encountered and the story of the first war humanity fought against another race. Ending the book with a brief overview of what lead to the Guardian being sold and the Valiance being mothballed along with the origins of the Testament.
    >> Commissar-Kun !uNEmgZBQBo 01/13/10(Wed)16:08 No.7574975
    >>7574967

The final book in the trilogy would be: The Guardian. This one would pick up where the first book left off. With the Valiance's amazing success against the enemy it would be upgraded further and have the Galileo join the Valiance and the Testament to provide assistance with upgrades, analyse enemy forces and figure out why the Valiance and the Testament are performing so well despite being outdated relics. This book would finish the war ending on a happy note with the Valiance being upgraded further and returned to full time duty for the forseeable future.

The books ending would have two things. The captain, at the beginning of the trilogy a young man is now an old grizzled vet who's retiring and going home to the world he grew up on to spend more time with his family and grandchildren.

The Galileo AI and its Captain are presenting the findings of their decades of research on the Valiance to the fleet admirals which is basically summed up as "You want quality you have to pay through the nose for it. Simple as really."

The Captain just before he leaves asks the Valiance a few questions about his behaviour and state of being. The Valiance reveals how despite appearances his behaviour has always had logical, rational reasoning behind it and reveals that all AIs are actually like this. The only difference between him and other AIs is that he does not have social interaction software that adds to his directives to make him seem more "human". He is simply a machine. A tool. Incapable of emotion, sentimentality or any feeling that the human Captain would recognise.

But for what its worth the Valiance says that he regrets the Captain has grown old. Saying it will be a long time before the new Captain becomes as competent as he was. When the Captain says that Valiance is just saying that for the same reasons he ever said anything the Valiance reveals there is no reason for him to do that.

    And on that it ends.

The Guardian and its Captain constantly battle the enemy without and the enemy within. Until finally the Valiance and the Guardian meet again and drive the enemy back where they came from.

Inside the head is all the crew quarters and such along with the bridge. The shaft is simply access points for the detachable modules which range from labs to workshops to small automated factories and at the end of the shaft is the engine room. Naturally its got a framework that increases the overall strength of the structure but thats just what I was thinking.

As someone who's working on a concept and trying to get it to paper, I can say this.

    Culture. Culture is crucial.

Why? Because humanity seems to be a culture based society. We crave the attention and the feeling of being with a group. We have certain concepts about what is and is not acceptable in cultures.

So what do you do? Well, if you're looking to make a different human culture, look to the current ones, and the ancient ones, pick and choose, give them a reason as to why they do it, and presto.

    Instant New Culture.

As for making it as realistic as possible? Look for anything involving humanity fighting in space in 1970's gear. I forget the series name, but there was one where a group of soldiers used a Challenger Rocket Vietnam era weaponry to take out it's opponents.

Watch what your weapons are, and look to Clancy for help. Clancy might suck at story telling sometimes, but god damn his gun porn is amazing. He tells you down to the letter how a gun fires a bullet.

    Hmm.... Let me think.

    "THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!"
The grey haired captain didn't flinch or even deign to look as his first officer threw a datatablet on his desk. Its now flickering display showing what to most officers would be a godsend.
"Now son you've earned that promotion. Most would be a little more grateful."
The young officer is pacing in circles in front of the desk obviously angry at this development.
"It's not the promotion. It's my assignment, have you SEEN my assignment? I'm being forced onto a damned relic! The fucking Valiance That things a museum piece. Its can't even be spaceworthy anymore."

The captain turns his chair to look at his junior.
"Don't you think I know that? I've been fighting hard to stall your promotion in the hopes that something better would come up. But the enemy has decimated fleet resources. All the new ships are going to more experienced Captains, there is nothing out there for Junior Captains except for recommissioned ships."
"But there must be something better than the Valiance. Why can't we take this to command? It would be suicide to use a ship like that in modern naval combat"

The captain picks up and taps the flickering datatablet.
"I've already tried that. Results are piss poor though. I'm afraid there is nothing that can be done at this point, your record will always show that you were captain of the Valiance. However I'm working to make sure you get an expedient transfer to a better ship, just go there and go through the motions. I assure you, you will be off that ship before its even finished its refit."

The junior officer seems to calm down a bit at this but is still fidgeting nervously.
"Still its my first command. That will leave a mark."
"Well my boy there are worse things. At least you can say your first command was the largest ship in the fleet. Remember always try to turn a disadvantage into an advantage...although that will be difficult with this one."

it's perfectly acceptable to make it a short story.

A full length book is going to require much more than these threads have covered, and you will have to fully develop and flesh out crew members and individual back stories.

A short story told in 3rd person about a ship's AI would still be fascinating enough and would save a lot of work that could potentially ruin the thing.

Remember, this is about the Valiance first and foremost. The crew is just another in a thousand year odd long service life that has seen many crews and captains and their struggles.

This nugget of awesome is a combination sniper rifle/grenade launcher! The extended clipazine holds plenty of specialized rounds, while the hopper on top holds small grenades that can blow anything up! The 2 scopes improve accuracy. This weapon, invented by Mack of Future Weapons, combines the firepower of a grenade launcher with the accuracy of a sniper rifle. However, it is bolt-action, which means it is slow to reload.
