79 KB 4e Character Builds, Bonus Thread: Delban's Occulted Cooling Appliance (Level 22) Anonymous 01/16/10(Sat)11:03 No.7616699
tl;dr: After landing a critical hit or reducing an enemy to 0 hit points, this level 22 warforged Earthstrength warden can, for the rest of the encounter, deal 5 irresistible cold damage to herself as a free action on each of her turns to inflict 8 cold damage (or more, given the vulnerabilities that can be imposed) upon each enemy she has marked. As long as she maintains this state, she also happens to be invisible.

Most optimized builds in 4e are constructed to provide a practical character who can contribute and fulfill her primary and secondary class roles effectively, efficiently, and reliably from levels 1 to 30, or failing that, 11 to 30. Then there are builds which are created mainly to prove a point or demonstrate quirky yet impractical synergy between lesser-known options. This particular build falls under the latter category.

The Elemental Breach level 11 feature of the Breach Warden paragon path is a highly situational class feature. Most monsters that inflict, acid, cold, lightning, or thunder damage resist that damage type themselves, and so the class feature mainly sees use only when a critical hit is scored or during uncommon scenarios involving specific positioning of mixed enemies. As has been pointed out by a certain poster in another forum, however, the Delbanian Vambraces level 23 arms slot item can allow you to deal 5 cold damage to yourself every round, and you gain invisibility as an incidental bonus as well. Using this item, an epic-level Strength/Constitution-based warden can be built to generate a constant stream of cold damage against enemies that she marks, with the defensive and offensive benefits of invisibility that she gains cancelling out the 5 irresistible cold damage that she takes during each of her turns. However, this comes with three flaws that are blows against this build's practical feasibility:

1.) This build is only viable at level 22 for a starting character, due to the nature of magic item parcels and wish lists, or level 19 for a character in an ongoing campaign. This means that the build shall seldom see actual play.
2.) As is the case for many other cold damage-focused builds, the unique strengths of this character are completely null and void against monsters possessing of cold resistance or variable resistance.
3.) The Delbanian Vambraces require you to land a critical hit (fortunately, you have a handful of close attacks at your disposal, and your melee attacks score critical hits on a roll of a natural 19 or 20 thanks to the Bludgeon Mastery heroic feat) or reduce an enemy to 0 hit points with your Frost Craghammer +4. Before then, you are nothing more than a conventional, if optimized and stalwart, Earthstrength warden who can double as a strikerthrough the Crippling Crush and Crushing Guardian heroic feats.

In any case, do enjoy the level 22 build snapshot below. Commentary is provided at the bottom such that the decisions made during the development of the build can be showcased.

Frost Craghammer +4 (Daily ✦ Cold): Free Action. Use this power when you hit with the weapon. The target takes an extra 2d8 cold damage and is slowed until the end of your next turn.
Salve of Power ×3 (Daily): When a Salve of Power is applied to a creature, the target can expend one healing surge to regain the use of one daily power of 5th level or lower (instead of regaining hit points). If the target has no healing surges remaining, it cannot benefit from the salve.

    Commentary:

    >Race: Warforged, Eberron Player's Guide, pages 32-33
Counting a certain quasi-official race from page 96 of the Dungeon Magazine #169, there exist five Strength/Constitution races at the time of this writing: the orc, the minotaur, the wogen, the goliath, and the warforged. The orc comes with a terrible racial encounter power due to it being limited to a standard action, a charge-restricted racial feature, and no skill bonuses. The minotaur is similarly burdened with a standard action racial encounter power (that also happens to be inaccurate because of its lack of built-in Expertise), a charge-restricted racial feature, and a second racial feature that triggers only when you are knocked into the negatives. The wogen is a mechanically solid race overall, especially with its +1 racial bonus to Will, though not being able to speak Common is an issue, and it is not an RPGA-legal race. The goliath is the second most optimal Strength/Constitution race available, as it is likewise graced with a +1 bonus to Will and a valuable racial encounter power. The warforged, however, is an over-the-top race, with lovely out-of-combat benefits (no need to eat, sleep, or breathe, four-hour extended rests with full awareness, attached and embedded components), a +2 racial bonus to saving throws against ongoing damage (quite synergistic with the warden's Font of Life class feature), immunity to failing most death saving throws, +1 Will, and an even more effective (due to being unfailingly reactive rather than proactive) racial encounter power that also comes with a saving throw against ongoing damage. As this build is fairly feat-intensive, racial feats cannot be given any berth; therefore, the warforged race is chosen.

    >Guardian Might: Earthstrength, Player's Handbook 2, page 153
I ultimately consider the second wind-contingent AC boost that the Earthstrength class feature offers to be superior to the Stormheart's sliding and slowing upon a second wind.

    >Level 1: Strength 16+2, Constitution 16+2, Dexterity 10, Intelligence 12, Wisdom 12, Charisma 8
Strength is the primary ability score for any warden, as it drives the class's attack rolls and damage rolls. Constitution follows as the secondary score for an Earthstrength or Stormheart warden, determining hit points, healing surges, power rider effects, and the extra damage from the Crippling Crush heroic feat. A 12 is allocated into both Intelligence and Wisdom for the sake of Reflex and Will, though they can be switched out for a 12 in Dexterity and/or Charisma instead to suit your tastes for out-of-combat capabilities and flavor concept.

    >Level 1: Crippling Crush, Primal Power, page 136
This feat causes the damage you deal with slowing and immobilizing powers (which, for this build, would be the Weight of Earth at-will power; the Creeper's Grasp and Eager Vine Strike encounter powers; and the Form of Winter's Herald daily power's close burst 1 weapon attack) to skyrocket to the point where this feat is an nearly an automatic pick for Strength/Constitution wardens and desperately requires errata. At level 1, such a warden's Constitution modifier is likely to be +4, translating to an additional 4 damage, and come level 21, the Demigod epic destiny would improve that Constitution modifier to a staggering +8.

    >Level 8: Sudden Roots, Player's Handbook 2, page 189
I consider this to be a helpful feat for a warden, but not a particularly necessary one. I feel that the penalty to attack rolls from marking, the threat of an opportunity attack, and the possibility of being on the receiving end of either a weapon-versus-Fortitude Warden's Fury or a no-attack-roll-required Warden's Grasp is enough incentive for an enemy to not break off from a square adjacent to you and proceed to attack you rather than your allies. That said, this feat can halt enemies who do so anyway, as well as foes who attempt to move past you in cramped, enclosed areas.

    >Level 11: Lasting Frost, Player's Handbook, page 203
    >Level 11 (replaces Toughness): Wintertouched, Player's Handbook, page 201
I am normally not fond of spending two feats simply to get the infamous "Frostcheese" combination going, though since this build must wield a Frost Craghammer +4 to trigger the at-will power of the Delbanian Vambraces anyway, you might as well snag for yourself a reliable (against all monsters save for those bearing cold resistance or variable resistance) source of combat advantage and +5 damage. Note that the Elemental Breach feature can trigger this vulnerability.

    >Level 12: Hammer Rhythm, Player's Handbook, page 203
Though this is restricted to only your melee attacks that do not have a Miss line (for this build, the Thorn Strike and Weight of Earth at-will powers; the Guardian's Pounce, Creeper's Grasp, and Eager Vine Strike encounter powers; and the Form of the Vengeful Storm daily power), it does ramp up your damage output considerably. Again, your Constitution modifier comes into play for determining its damage, but this time, on a miss.

    >Wondrous: Salve of Power (Level 10, 5,000 gp), Adventurer's Vault, page 176
With your three Salves of Power, you can remain in a guardian form for up to six combat encounters a day, and during these battles, you receive a +4 bonus to damage rolls with your weapon attacks. This is effectively a second Weapon Focus for you, which does wonders for your static damage bonuses.

    >Level 21: Bludgeon Mastery, Player's Handbook, page 206
I would usually consider this to be a low-priority feat at the epic tier due to it affecting only melee attacks (for this build, that would be the same attacks that the Hammer Rhythm paragon feat covers, plus the Form of the Rowan Sentinel daily power), but this particular gimmick build could use the feat to potentially trigger the at-will power of the Delbanian Vambraces more reliably.

    >Level 1: Thorn Strike, Player's Handbook 2, page 154
    >Level 1: Weight of Earth, Player's Handbook 2, page 154
Crippling Crush taken into consideration, the latter power deals 2[W] + Strength modifier + Constitution modifier damage at the epic tier and also slows the target. This is your mainstay at-will. Thorn Strike, on the other hand, is for use in uncommon scenarios wherein you are unable to move and you have an enemy exactly 2 squares away from you.

    >Level 7: Guardian's Pounce, Primal Power, page 97
Though this power is a mere 1[W] + Strength modifier attack that is not compatible with Crippling Crush, it nonetheless generates out-of-turn damage for you and can potentially spare an ally from an enemy's attacks. The beauty of this power is that it can be used even before your first turn has rolled around and that it does not demand the enemy to be one that you have marked.

    >Level 17 (replaces Rough Strike): Eager Vine Strike, Player's Handbook 2, page 161
Not only does this power trigger the damage from the Crippling Crush heroic feat, but it also softens up the target's AC and Reflex on a hit. At level 21, imposing a -8 penalty to AC and Reflex is an indubitably devastating, action point nova-enabling rider effect.

    >Level 1: Form of Winter's Herald, Player's Handbook 2, page 156
The value of this distinct daily attack power is well-known, especially as it is compatible with Salves of Power. However, this build allows you to trap enemies adjacent to you, an invisible defender who constantly inflicts cold damage upon them, which is downright cruel.

    >Level 9: Form of the Vengeful Storm, Dragon Magazine #383, Class Acts: Wardens of the Breach
Fly 4 (hover), insubstantial, and the sliding of adjacent allies and enemies. Though this exceedingly effective power is unfortunately capable of halving the damage that you receive from the Delbanian Bracers, it does improve your mobility, survivability, and battlefield control potential by an overwhelming degree.

    >Level 15 (replaces Form of Mountain's Thunder): Form of the Rowan Sentinel, Player's Handbook 2, page 161
The Elemental Breach feature inflicts its damage upon each enemy marked by you, and this power happens to mark each enemy within 3 squares of you at the start of each of their turns, thereby enabling you to enswathe an even larger number of enemies in cold damage.

    >Level 2: Erupting Font, Primal Power, page 94
Succeeding on a saving throw from your Font of Life class feature can allow you to mark each enemy in close burst 5 using this encounter utility power, thereby subjecting more enemies to the cold damage from your Elemental Breach feature.

    >Level 10: Earthstride, Player's Handbook 2, page 159
    >Level 16: Primal Leap, Player's Handbook 2, page 161
At level 21, with a +8 for both your Strength modifier and your Constitution modifier, the former power enables you to teleport 8 squares as a move action, and the latter lets you jump 14 squares as a move action. Also taking into account the invisibility granted to you by the Delbanian Bracers, your battlefield mobility is nothing to be scoffed at.

    >Main Hand (Attached Component): Frost Craghammer +4 (Level 18, 85,000 gp), Player's Handbook, page 234
    >Main Shard: Siberys Shard of Merciless Cold +3 (Level 13, 17,000 gp), Eberron Player's Guide, page 112
    >Hands (Embedded Component): Gloves of Ice +2 (Level 11, 9,000 gp), Adventurer's Vault 2, page 59
As mentioned above, a Frost Craghammer +4 is required for fulfilling the trigger of the Delbanian Vambraces. Though this build cannot afford Iron Armbands of Power due to the Vambraces already occupying the slot, the a Siberys Shard of Merciless Cold +3 and Gloves of Ice +2 can make up for this lack of an item bonus to damage rolls. An interesting quirk to note is that the daily power of the Frost Weapon can trigger your Crippling Crush damage on an attack that would normally be incompatible with it, such as a melee basic attack, a Warden's Fury, or a Guardian's Pounce.

    >Neck (Embedded Component): Amulet of Physical Resolve +5 (Level 22, Free), Adventurer's Vault, page 148
Poison, slowing, immobilizing, and weakening attacks are of less threat to you with this amulet, which aids your Font of Life in washing away these deleterious ongoing effects.

    >Grandmaster Training: Davros Elden's Defensive Step, Dungeon Master's Guide 2, page 145
The first two items slightly shore up your two weak non-AC defenses, Reflex and Will. The invisibility from the Delbanian Bracers and the Earthstride and Primal Leap encounter utility powers render shifting that much less tactically advantageous, but the +1 item bonus to AC for shifting that Davros Elden's Defensive Step bestows upon you is better than nothing, given that all of your other equipment slots are occupied. Then again, shifting 2 squares and gaining a +1 item bonus to AC as a minor action each encounter does have its uses.

    >Waist (Embedded Component): Belt of Mountain Endurance (Level 18, 85,000 gp), Dragon Magazine #365, page 60
Adding your Strength modifier to your healing surge value translates into more effective hit points for you during each encounter and thus greater longevity in battle.

    >Wondrous: Backlash Tattoo (Level 9, 4,200 gp), Adventurer's Vault 2, page 83
Some might claim that this item can interfere with your immediate reactions, but you are most likely to be bloodied by an enemy's attack enemy, and so you might as well inscribe this tattoo upon yourself for a free melee basic attack in most combat encounters.

    That is all.

"W-Why do I...have to do this..." You cry softly, trying to gather information as to your current state. A very sad state, of course, you can't bear the sound of your blazer jacket hitting the floor. It hits it with an awful thud, a cold, blunt one that makes you wonder why you're even here. What you wouldn't do for a nice warm bath and carrot juice. But no, here you are, standing in front of your would-be master, facing a mirror, a body length mirror, at that, so you can see just entirely how bad your miserable expression is. Effecting your entire body. You get no responce though, except a gesture you can see in the mirror, the person behind you waving their finger about, telling you to keep going. This only makes you shed more tears, for the embarrassing pain you're going through.

You gently loosen your tie, trying not to both accidentally and purposefully strangle yourself. You want to live, but the extreme weight on your heart right now is so much to bear. The hot tears of anguish continue streaming down your face, streaking your cheeks and dirtying your once beautiful face. The droplets are soon hitting the floor, as your eyes have watered so much by now. Your tie slowly slips off your hand and onto the floor below, as you soon now work your way to your shirt, reluctantly. Button by tiny button you undo them, watching the gleeful expression of the perpetrator behind you in the mirror. You further undo your shirt, exposing the pink, carrot printed bra underneath. Your arms start shaking, not wanting to continue, but you must. You slide the shoulders of your shirt off your arms, and yet another, soft, yet sickening thud is made on the freezing floor below you.

You shakenly and very reluctantly reach for your backside when you see the menace behind you gesturing downward, something you were afraid of, personally. You take a gulp, finding that your mouth is dry and exhausted, and carry your hands down your bare stomach and to your pleaded skirt. You move one of the flaps and start unzipping it slowly, every notch in the steel that the zipper has to go through making an undeniably painful sound to you. The skirt loosens and the draft you feel more or less feels like the chilly grasp of death. Your breathing and panting has more or less become erratic and disfigurable, your fear reaching new heights. You lightly gasp in terror as you notice that your skirt has fallen off your hips, and now rests laying flat around your ankles.

You look in the mirror and see the antoganist gesturing to unhook your bra. You try and keep yourself from whimpering, because that would only be showing more weakness, something you don't need to be doing. Not at this point, knowing that even an ounce more of it, and you could be staring at a fate worse then death, worse then even this. You feel yourself practically choking on the dehydration in your mouth and throat, hindering your ability to cry more. Your eyes are stained with tears and experiencing the utmost pain. Stinging, throbbing, blurry...but you must press forever. For if you disobeyed right now, the consenquences would be very severe. So onwards, your hands go on, behind your back and not so steadily unhooking your bra. The moment it loosens, your chest expands slightly, and you can only stare at it in horror in the mirror. You then relunctantly slide the straps off your shoulders and it finally comes off. You're now staring at your busting bare breasts in the mirror, shaking from both fear and the cold. The cold is more readily apparent on your nipples, which are sticking out like sore thumbs, and you honestly wish they hadn't been.

Then, it strikes you. The one gesture you were most afraid of. You were praying, hoping that they would let you go after that. Put then, they make a pulling down motion with one hand...and your heart is stricken with fear. Your eyes stare widened at the mirror for a while before you notice the figure behind you about to get up, you then quickly and hastily force your hands onto your hips, closing your eyes tightly, in case you weren't able to make it in time. After opening your eyes and looking back in the mirro, they appear to have relaxed back in their chair. You look down at your pink panties and your eyes well up in pain and sadness. You then close your eyes, knowing that defeat is but a short pull away.

Your very slowly slide the thin pair of undergarments down your hips, across your thighs and over your knees, knowing the fact that you have to bend down, exposing a very, very important part of you to this insane dealer, only makes it all the more painful. When the soft fabric is around your ankles, you slowly stand back up again, shivering, shaking, in a condition of complete fear, pain and sadness. Your heart is beating irregularly, your breathing has become erratic, your vision has become blurry, your sinuses have become clogged, the despair you're feeling is very real and very painful. You weakly lift one foot up to get it through your panties and do the same for the other. You're now standing, completely nude, in front of a mirror, displaying your full, bare figure to both yourself and your assailant.

Replacing Weapon Proficiency (Craghammer) with Dwarven Weapon Training and Weapon Focus (Hammers) with Dwarven Durability would be advisable. Your attack bonus would be reduced by 1, your damage bonus would be reduced by 2, your speed would be reduced by 1, and you would lose out on the wonderful Warforged Resolve racial encounter power, but you would gain an additional two healing surges, your Constitution modifier (+8) added to your healing surge value for even greater resilience, resistance to forced movement and proning effects, and most importantly, the ability to use your second wind as a minor action. This effectively earns you an additional standard action each and every encounter.

Nah, that's a pretty common theme. Things like warforged become fascinated with nature because they aren't natural, or deciding that as they were created to defend they'll defend the entire world nature and all, as there's no real difference between Joe Cannith and a squirrel, they're both living things.

It took me a while to read all this, but I really have to say that you've done a great job with this.

Your custom build format is overkill, but it's grown on me. It looks more professional and thought out than Character Builder dumps.

You're very thorough and insightful with how you put things together and give commentary on them.
