You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a warrior of magic. You are a force for good.

It's been three days. Your left shoulder feels a bit heavy, now that it's got a brand-new arm attached to it. Jerith almost knocked himself out putting you back together, and you've thanked him repeatedly for it. The alchemic bandage has disappeared, replaced by smooth blue skin, almost the same color as the rest of you.

You had a little bit of a scare this morning as you tried to move the arm before the paralytic wore off, but now that everything's all there, there shouldn't be any danger from wiggling it a little. It feels strange, a bit like it's not quite where it should be, but Jerith assures you that you will adjust, as long as you use the arm naturally.

There was plenty of time to read while you were healing, so you've been going through Vasian's books, particularly the more scientific ones. He's a gifted writer, if a little dry, and his knowledge is incomplete by Earth standards, but much more than you'd expected in a fantasy world. He's agreed to assist with teaching, since he used to be a professor, after all, and all his knowledge isn't doing any good if it's just sitting in his mind.

I apologize for my lateness. Real life has interfered.

You exit the Hall with Jerith behind you, moving your new arm in a circle. It's flexible, but a little numb. You try picking up a barrel, which is no trouble at all. The new hand is exactly the same as your old one, save for the color. A few swings don't cause the thing to come flying out of its socket, so you think it's safe to say it'll be fine.

Still frozen. Hretmar's been keeping in contact, so you're aware of its status. Calmer, but still restless, trying to break free but unable to move. The confinement will be impossible for it to cope with for more than a week or so. It's a storm elemental, used to being able to move freely on the winds. If it's released a month after being sealed, its rage would persist until it was destroyed.

That matters little to him. He is your apprentice and your friend.

You journey to the lake, moving your arm absently. It gets colder as you approach, eventually becoming freezing, though that obviously doesn't affect you. Both of your companions are wearing fur-lined garments, so they should be fine for a while.

You speak to Hretmar, preparing yourself to link with the chained elemental. He will shield you, and break contact if you're in danger.

A light gleams in the darkness. You touch it, lightly.

    A voice. "You... are... protector?"

The voice of screeches in your ears, almost unbearable. "I... live... in the wind. Nothing escapes! The air... is mine alone!"

The elemental is struggling against its bonds, focusing all its power on motion, on force. It's going to escape, unless something is done.

A bright light is shining on the ice, illuminating the quietly falling snow with a shimmering glitter. You can see a faint pattern of runes around the lake, inscribing themselves into the ground.

For a moment, the snow halts, suspended in the air, as the power of a god breaks its way into the mortal realm. The runes flare as you and your companions back away, bursting into a cascade of bluish sparks, arcing into the lake.

The scream of the elemental breaches the surface, making the three of you clamp your hands against your ears. The ice presses down, compacting the being against the lakebed, as blue and white lights sparkle beneath it. And then, just as quickly as it started, it's over.

We should build ourselves a house in the town, perhaps under the granary. As long as we aren't visible to outsiders and we've got an escape tunnel available, it should be safe. Sleeping in a cavern in the woods isn't very convenient, and if there is an emergency in the town at night we should be on hand to help out.

Build a hidden tunnel complex and bomb shelter beneath the village so people can hide or evacuate to the woods in an emergency. Also, hidden storerooms for emergency supplies and tax evasion.

Expand the library so we can fit inside, or at least reach through a window and grab a book without having to ask someone to hand it to us.

Research Ice Golems, you never know when you'll need a few friends/decoys.

We should build a road down to the quarry, and put together a crane with a pulley and winch so the villagers can easily haul rocks out and cart them into town. We can help break large quantities of stone out of the ground with our ice and earth magic, but we won't be able to stay in the village forever and should aim to provide them with some more tools and technologies that don't rely on us. Easy access to stone will let them improve, expand, and fortify the village in a way that doesn't draw undo scrutiny from outsiders.

It would be difficult to structure the library shelves in such a way that you could easily pick out a single book and retrieve it. Enlarging the building so that you can fit inside would be a sizable project, but obviously nothing you can't handle.

If we have more farmers than we need to feed the village, we should devote some of our spare resources to alcohol production. Alcohol is great, you can drink it, you can sell it, you can burn it, you can disinfect wounds with it, and you can use it to gain political or economic leverage. "Would you like a wagon full of booze" is an automatic success for any diplomacy checks. Invent some unique, high quality brew and get the local nobility hooked on it, they'll have a hard time executing us if we're the only ones with the recipe. Exporting booze provides the village with a low tech but legitimate, not-suspicious-at-all, source of wealth, which will help us launder our demon gems. We can use our ice powers to easily distill large quanties of high-proof ethanol, which makes a better fuel than methane since it is a liquid at room temperature. Large scale ethanol production opens up all sorts of fun technology paths, like combustion engines, smokeless indoor heating, flamethrowers, and Molatov Catapults.

And the story immigrants told actually makes it's even more believable, because it seems there's dome DoDs coming to the surface lately. It has been one month since your last encounter with the Storm Elemental. Thankfully, nothing has come to destroy the village and kill you for a while. When the elders were first getting to know you, they didn't think they would have to face anything more than bandits or forest trolls. Instead, they got Demons, adventurers, and elementals.

Bem organized another trip to Fain, joking that it's a shame elementals don't drop gems. He took some furs, some gold, and one of the smallest rubies, and came back with a few books, one on appraising gemstones and jewelry, as well as a hog, three pigs, and a stallion for the two horses you already have.

Repairs to the majority of the town were completed in eight days, after which you began constructing a new granary, bigger, better, and less likely to fall over. The grain was transported from the old to the new one carefully, under your supervision, and after that was done, you deconstructed the damaged building piece-by-piece, piling up a large quantity of stones that you then used to help expand the library, now complete with a you-sized door and entranceway, made to look ornate and decorative, 'cathedral-like', in case anyone comes calling and starts to wonder. A smaller entrance to the left accommodates normal humans, and the two stories of shelf space will suffice for a long time. Vasian is very happy.

The road to the quarry is being laid, though it will take a while to complete, and excavation is beginning underneath the town, where there will be, months from now, a 'bunker' of sorts to protect the inhabitants from attacks and government scrutiny, connected to a place for you to sleep, close to your people, and several tunnels leading into the forest, camouflaged by 'ruins'.

All that syrup you've collected has been experimented on for a while now, yielding all manner of strange brews, none that were truly something special. Until now. The perfect combination of ingredients and effort has produced Dreamwood's own unique brand, a not-too-sweet blend with a hint of berries. There is nothing like it in Fain or anywhere else.

Booze of various kinds is collecting in the inn and in storage, most of it not particularly good. There is now a bottle or two of alcohol for sterilization, and a small barrel half-full of ethanol to augment the heat of the furnace. The Bathouse is actually capable of running hot now.

Research has brought you an invaluable understanding of elementals. Those of the wind prefer to wander, moving wherever they wish and wreaking havoc wherever they land. They do not like aircraft or shields, and they especially don't like being put off the path they want to take. Some are very intelligent, but most are not, since they don't interact meaningfully with other beings. They can be tamed, but as they are intangible, only powerful magic can restrain them.

As for golems, they are what you'd expect. An inanimate object shaped out of some solid material, like ice, clay, or metal, and given life by runic inscription and a spell of power. They know only what is written on their bodies, and can be rendered inert by the simple erasure of their symbols. Constructing one is not difficult, since you only have to make a rough shape. Bringing one to life requires one to study the runic arts and learn the spells that give the golem motive force, and these are often a well-kept secret of their original builders.

On the magic front, the track-removing charm is complete, though it still doesn't last nearly as long as your cold aura can. It prevents you from leaving footprints in the snow, and lessens the impressions in the earth, though they can still be detected by a skilled tracker, like Eron the infantryman. Your ice arrows strike with massive force, your 'cold lightsaber' can freeze straight through anything, and you can see into a pane of ice and out another, though that is ridiculously draining.

The runes are only useful as long as they are intact. You don't actually have to remove them completely, just partially, though being thorough is a good idea. With an ice golem, melting its runes a little would do it. For a stone golem, you'd have to use earth shaping or blast a chunk out of it.

The elders are taking a look at the appraisal book. The very back section has information on geodes, and states that ones of pure diamond have only been recovered by Demon-slayers, most of whom retired to massive mansions afterward.

Another month has passed. Bem and the other elders have been working through the gem stock with the book, referring back to it constantly and using Lark's meager remaining ability for magnification and examining internal structures. Their estimate is that there is enough wealth in the non-geode gems to buy about nine hundred cows. For the geode alone, one thousand and enough land for all of them. In the scarcity brought by war, this is a staggering amount. There are 91 miscellaneous gems and 1 geode.

The road to the quarry has been completed, along with a crane-and-pulley and a counterweight, which is remarkably easy to operate. You make an occasional trip to loosen things up with your magic, but the villagers are handling most of the operation on their own. The steady influx of stone is mostly being used for paving, in the absence of any large above-ground construction projects.

Dreamwood Bunker is taking shape beneath the surface, carved directly into the rock at about the same depth as your cavern. The entrance tunnel leads from the fake granary, and it's connected to your original escape tunnel. Right under the granary is a little alcove for you to sleep in, with a rock weapon rack for easy retrieval of your axe and shortsword. From there, the excavation blooms into a huge area with apartment-like divisions set into the walls. It will be a miniature subterranean city when you're done. Light has so far been provided by Jerith's flash-wand and Lark's magical torches, but it's rather harsh.

The flow of booze has filled up the inn and a lot of storage space with barrels, there is more syrup than you know what to do with, and there is enough ethanol to keep the bathouse comfortably warm for hours and hours. Add to this the attempts to convert the syrup into yet another brew, and you've got one happy little town. The farmers and carpenter from outside your enclave have been thoroughly indoctrinated; they have never had it this good and regardless of your blueness, they are staying.

The palisade's durability has been increased markedly, though its status as a last line of defense is clear. Anything that makes it that far without being stopped by you is either flying or very, very powerful. A small weather station, complete with instruments, has replaced Hretmar's protective influence, so any approaching elementals are not likely to be enraged.

You've got plenty of books on Perin and its history, and you've shifted your focus to them for the time being. This nation has a rich culture that goes back hundreds of years, to the first isolated settlements and the first Lord. The absolute power of the single leader is an inbuilt tradition, springing from the defeat of a troll army by that original Lord, a magician. Every Lord since has faced some sort of epic challenge to prove his worthiness, and only a few have failed. The challenge has come in many forms, from diplomatic to economic to the well-known test of the roving army, and it is widely believed to be triggered by an unknown god. Speculation abounds as to what the current Lord's challenge will be.

A breakthrough has been made with the heat pump. You have learned to dampen your innate fear of heat and fire, and to see both in the terms of the other elements, no more powerful or threatening than ice or earth. It is still quite impossible for you to do any kind of direct manipulation of either, but you are able to redirect the heat siphoned by your cold magic with reasonable efficiency. It is difficult, tiring, and sometimes frightening, with the omnipresent possibility of an accident doing you serious damage. But if it helps the village, it is worth it.

It is the twelfth month, the middle of winter. Bem has been to Fain and back to let the local innkeepers sample the syrup and some of the booze. You have a buyer for both, because Bem is just that good. The hype about your town is increasing, drawing in the dispossessed and the weary from every direction, even wanderers from the city. Some are finding work in Fain, but others are remaining lost and unwanted. Build a giant tavern. Raise the floor slightly above ground level, make the ceiling high enough that we can walk around inside. Make the bar slightly higher than normal human scale, with similarly scaled bar stools. Put a trench behind the bar so we can tend without towering over customers, ideally their heads would be at about the level of our chest. Include a step above the trench so that a human can also bar tend when we aren't available. When adventurers come to town chasing rumors of a rogue frost giant, they will inevitably head to the local tavern to gather information, when they walk in they will find us serving drinks while wearing a bar wench outfit that shows plenty of cleavage. Being adventurers, they will find it nearly impossible to attack anyone who offers to give them alcohol. As any human or dwarf can attest, people who provide you with alcohol cannot possibly be evil. Once the adventurers have been placated with booze, we can send them questing in the demon tunnels, or just erase their memories with tequila and send them on their way. If anyone tries to tell people outside the village that they saw a frost giant in a tavern, they're just going to get laughed at.

Sorry, I'm just not convinced that dangling some food + alcohol would discourage anyone. We saw how freaked out those immigrants were when they saw us. If they had been trained as fighters, their first reaction would be to fight or run away. Adventurers are not stupid, the payoff of a collected bounty is worth way more than some food or drinks. And plus the inn is where all our friends are. If there is a fight there, some of them are almost guaranteed to be hurt.

The reactions of the rest of the people range from neutral to 'keep them away from me', but Vasian is quite vocal in his support for further immigration. This town can support at least twice its current population with all the food it has, and, in case you hadn't noticed, it's the middle of winter in the far North. There are people dying out there.

Taking in more migrants would have a minimal effect on the majority of the town, but you would probably have to go through the same shock and awe ordeal when they see you.

It would be possible for one of the elders or one of the twins to obtain a title. The twins have a Letter of Minor Favor from this region's governor for uncovering the Forusian refugee camp, which would lessen the price. However, the title would be theirs alone, passing to their children after death. Noble title can only be transferred to a person with no blood connection with the permission of the Lord, which usually happens when a nobleman dies without heirs, leaving his wife to take care of things.

The very least of the minor nobles rule a single town from a manor on the property. They pay tribute in coin, resources, and men, occasionally submitting their daughters to a political marriage, and in return are left mostly alone, following the orders of the local Governor of course. All nobles, no matter their status, are entitled to protection from the Lord, which generally means a personal guard and the ability to call reinforcements from the nearest garrison. The standard service time is five years, though that can be doubled or even quadrupled if circumstances warrant. Lark only served two years, because a cease-fire was signed a ways into his tour. When you are drafted, you essentially become a slave of the military until you are released.

    >If we are offered a suicide mission are we obligated to accept it?
You are obligated to follow orders. If you are ordered to charge into certain death, you will do it, or be executed for insubordination.

    >Do we get training?
Yes. The amount and type varies, from a three-week basic course for front-line 'meaties' (glorified human shields) to a year or more of special instruction for Intelligence and Research soldiers.

    >Is there discrimination in the force?
Sometimes. Only males are allowed to serve in actual combat, except in special cases. The Hagrek are infrequent participants, but are usually used in engineering corps or as berserkers. The Ulls have their own separate regiments, as they dislike associating with other races.

    >How is the army structured?
I'd appreciate if you could make that more specific.

    Question.

We've spent the last several months regaling the townspeople with largely anti-noble propaganda. Getting a noble title for ourselves is probably going to look awfully hypocritical; it might be seen as a betrayal of principles.

Has this been addressed? Did I just miss it?

Why do you have to assume that a noble is someone automatically bad? Don't be so narrow minded. The villagers know us, they know our nature. If we explain why we are doing things to them. I believe that they would understand our reasoning and as long as we don't suddenly become a douche. They would accept it.

*facepalm* No, we haven't. We don't have merchants and travelers because they would see us and we can't risk them revealing us. We can't stop taxes or drafts yet. They don't fear and hate nobility, only the Lord and only then because they had it really bad. Now that things have improved they are probably not so cold to him. Staying in hiding is completely counter-productive after a point and we are getting closer and closer to that point. There is no harm in becoming a noble other than loosing some gems that we can't even really spend right now because people would become suspicious.

Kindly read >>8088994. A very big part of our popularity is that we're willing to help, and that we don't actually have real, legal power over the village. All we had was our great strength, which we have willingly used to help people instead of smashing them around. That's why they love us.

Hretmar told us to be careful and remain humble before. The problem with nobility is not that nobles are evil; it's that nobles are *seen* to be evil. It doesn't matter if we're Lady Maya the Nice; we're still Lady Maya, and that title is going to arouse unnecessary suspicion.

If a nation has split its forces are the generals in charge of each force free to do their own thing or would they have a commander in charge to coordinate?

3)Go to the govenor and let us be drafted into the army.

    >Is there a strict top down command structure, with everyone following orders from the top down or is there some flexibility to allow for tactical decisions after some point?
In the field, orders from on high cannot always be received in a timely manner. Decisions at a tactical level tend to be made by the equivalent of sergeants, with strategic command falling to lieutenants, who take their orders from a regular command chain. In the heat of battle, it often falls to the 'men on the ground' to make the tough calls.

    >If a nation has split its forces are the generals in charge of each force free to do their own thing or would they have a commander in charge to coordinate?
The generals in the capitol make generalized decisions, often involving entire armies at once. These orders are then implemented by the commanders of each army. Coordination is taken by spheres. The entire battlefield is worried about by the capitol commanders, while the generals of the army only concern themselves with their own forces, and on down the line.

    >Does the army have a professional nco (sergeant) corp or is it straight commanders/commandees?
There is an equivalent to NCOs. Sahl reached the highest NCO rank as Over-Lead, commanding eight five-man squads.

    >We can do magic and fight physically. Would we be grouped with the magic casters or the physical fighters?
There are squads of combat mages who use magical and summoned weapons, as well as heavy spells. This is where you'd be likely to end up, unless your elemental skills got you assigned to engineering.

Fucking this. Approaching a potentially hostile noble in order to bribe him with a king's ransom to give us a title is neither careful nor humble. There is absolutely no benefit to becoming a noble that we can't reach through careful work and planning (I don't count blocking taxes and the draft as us being noble would affect neither). It hasn't even been a full year since we arrived, and we haven't even seen the benefits of some of our earliest plans yet (crop rotation, in particular). Talk of nobility seems to come up whenever there is a lull in the action and people get antsy to do something. Lets just bash some trolls, gain popular sentiment, and eventually we'll be able to move openly as a hero of the people who couldn't be targeted by the Lord without sparking an uprising. Have some patience.

As far as the elders are concerned, the best chance of getting the bounties rescinded early and gaining some real, tangible power you could use to assist the town at the next level would be what you've decided. Gain fame, circulate rumors, build a reputation, and call it.

It would be much easier if you just waited for all the Frost Giant hype to die down and the bounties to be taken down naturally, in two or three years. However, if you don't think you have that long, they will support you in your quest for citizenship or title.
