    About Aerial Warfare: While we have naval missions, I feel like fast and furious air missions are what will connect the realms between ground and space combat. As a combat role, Aerial units serve to provide invaluable support to ground pounders with fast bombing runs and air to surface transport.

    In naval, the cost effeciency for fighter class rigs against hulking space craft is enough reason to field them as both a distraction to the enemy and a potential threat to key units.

    The premise i had in made for aerial units is rapid and potent offensives with glass-like defenses. As such, they dont add needlessly to missions times even if you have a squadron of them.

    Consciousness was slow in coming, but eventually Lost’s eyes flickered open. She was lying face down on some sort of giving spongy material. The smell of synthetics filled her nostrils and as her eyes focused all she saw was white. Blinking she raised her head, suddenly feeling the soreness in her jaw and neck from sleeping awkwardly on them, and her unsteady gaze crept along the floor. White floor, white walls, her sore neck craning to take in a white ceiling which glowed translucent in places to let out a soft natural-looking light; it all seemed to be made of a single piece, even her “bed” rising out of the floor. Running long fingers over the floor, it too was made of the same giving substance, but seemed a little more solid then the spongy bed.

    The fingers idly poking floor suddenly stopped and the hand recoiled, covering her mouth. In a rush it all came back to her. The battle on Titan, the descent into the bloody killing ground, the clawing roaches, the boulders spinning through the air and… Lost looked down, her hands feeling for broken bones or ribs, or even soreness... there was none. She was wearing an ill-fitting shirt and pull-string trousers made from a light synthetic material that reminded her of hospital gowns. Only as she slid the material between the fingers of her left did she notice the absence. She brought that hand up to her face, looking its back and the base of the fingers. Icy shock hit her in the stomach. Where was her ring? She had had it for so little time, but its lack shook her to her very core as she ran the thumb and fingers of her right hand over the vacant hand. Suddenly she heard a cough behind her.

    She turned, her legs coming into a crouch. As she swung towards the voice dizziness wracked her and Lost fell onto her bottom, her head spinning. As she put her hands to her head to stop the sudden whirling, her eyes started to refocus on the origin of that cough. It was a figure sitting in a wheeled office chair, their white lab coat putting their black button-up shirt beneath and the dark blue tie in stark contrast the white walls. Their face—his face—was handsome, a thin beard running down the jawline to meet up with an equally thin and well-trimmed goatee, showing his strong chin and smooth cheeks off. His eyes, a deep green and filled with concern, were made all the more real by the slight dark circles beneath them, as if from lack of sleep. He was in a forward crouch, his arms extended as if to help, even if he sat over five feet away. He had frozen as their eyes met, awkwardly leaning out of his seat. After a moment he blinked and gave a nervous smile.

    “Hello Lost, I know this is a lot to take in. So I’m going to let you ask all the questions you want, and I’ll try my best to answer them.” His voice was a calm tenor, not trying to pacify or coddle, but simply being honest.

    Lost blinked a couple of times before the torrent of question came out: “Where am I? Where is Geist? Where is my ring? What happened in the battle? Did I die? What do you want from me? What’s wrong with me? Who are you?” Her voice took on a panicked tone near the end before she managed to clamp her mouth shut.

    “Okay, why don’t we answer those last first?” the man kept his voice calm, but didn’t try to placate her. “I’m Dr. Richard Waverly, a leading specialist in the field of human psionics. Well, I was, now I suppose that would be someone else. You’ve been through a serious trauma, but more likely you’re suffering the effect of the drugs that have been administered to you to keep you from being a threat. We had to have a direct copy of your genetics, but your training and genetic improvements as a knight make you a danger. You are very special person, Lost, you’re resulting genetic code from your altered original produced a psionic manifestation, something we’ve been very interested in documenting and figuring out a viable way of reproducing.”

    The doctor held up a hand as Lost tried to speak, confusion and alarm on her face. “Please, let me finish, then you can ask more questions. Okay? Good. You did die, and programs we had put in place transferred your memory data and flux here. Don’t worry, your back-up files were deleted, there are no copies, well besides those you already know about, running around. Combat operations continue on Titan, Bravo is performing admirably. Obviously due to your transfer, your engagement ring is lost, and I’m sorry for that. Sergeant Geist is now Captain Geist, and is now field commander. And you are on the Tabernacle. Besides the layout of the rooms, I have no idea the location or even the exterior of this struc—please stop crying…”
    >> Dr. Richard Waverly !TgTMWKhxoE 02/28/11(Mon)23:40 No.14082297
    Some time later the doctor slipped through the door, really just another part of the flex-steel room, and went to the adjacent monitoring room. He sat down in a chair, the one he had been using in the cell he had placed outside the door, and rubbed his eyes with a sigh. There was a shifting in the shadows and a bark of laughter.

    “Have fun playing twenty questions with Clytemn?”
    “That’s not her name. It’s Lost.”
    A snort of disgust. “Don’t tell me you’re going soft now that’s she actually here?”
    “I plan on getting the information we need, but I’m not resorting to your tactics.”
    “Heh, that’s alright.”
    A quick turn of the head. “It is?”
    An amused laugh. “Think of it as a race, we both have our own runners…”
    “What… what happens to the person who gets the manifestation data first?”
    “Oh, you’ll just have to find out.”
    Another sigh. “Anything else happen while I was in there?”
    “Remember that Shard-school we had tagged?”
    “The Compound Meme-pool?”
    “Yeah. Damn thing nearly burned through the transfer node, had to throw it off the scent before it data-mined anything.”
    “Did it work?”
    A laugh. “Yeah, ended up burning out its programs on some dead-end Com-sec in the boonies.”

    “Anything else?”
    “Doubled-checked that Focus User who was tooling around in her brain when we flushed her, looks like the Wiper did its job, cleared out his mem-cache on the delve.”
    “How many programs have they located?”
    “Their ‘Psi-Comm Investigation Board’ have uncovered all the ones we thought they would. We still have fair interception of important data.”
    “Did the other flush programs erase?”
    “Yes, they appear to have not been detected before-hand.”
    A pause. “So what happens now?”
    “Well, they aren’t going to stop a war just to track down one knight. And I have a date I can’t keep waiting…”
    A snort of disgust. “I’m not going to help you do this.”
    A door hissing open. “Doc, you might be a specialist, but you might be surprised how much I know.”

    The door opened and shuts as Richard looks down at his hands. The time he spent at the university, the time he spent in a world bigger then a single building and a captor, seemed so far away. He had agreed to it, even if he hadn’t had much of a choice at the time. But now, looking at the young girl huddled in the room, her hair draping around her as she shuddered and cried, he didn’t know if he could do it. But what choice did he have?
    >> Lost [01] !Ykpfge10hU 02/28/11(Mon)23:43 No.14082339
    Lost watched through blurry eyes as another drop of spittle rippled the pool beneath her, causing a plop—the only audible sound in the room besides the heartbeat that seemed to be in her head. She couldn’t move. That was the only thought in her head. She couldn’t move. Her body was parallel to the floor, facing down, held several feet in the air. She couldn’t even move or blink her eyes, her tears the only thing keeper her eyes moist as they traveled down to join the pool on the floor. She couldn’t even work the muscles of her mouth, to speak, to scream, or even to swallow the drool escaping her mouth. Light from above illuminated a shadow which she could barely see the sides of, a rectangle with her suspended in the middle. She couldn’t feel wires or straps, couldn’t hear the whine machinery. There was just the constant pitter of tear and sweat and drool as her fear ran rampant. She couldn’t move.

    A shudder of terror ran though her, turning her insides to ice, as there was a hiss behind her. Her breath, which already came in short inside her unexpanding chest, tightened to quick gasps. Boots clicked on the gray steelcrete floor and paused alongside her. Again she tried to struggle against the unseen bonds, but not even a grunt escaped her lips. She couldn’t move. Tears anew began to spatter onto the floor as she felt something cold and hard press against the bare skin on the small of her back. It was only as it started to slide up the middle of her back that she realized she was naked.

    “Hello, Clytemnestra,” said a strangely accented male voice, slightly deep with a rasp. A pre-war linguistic might know it as a Northern English dialect. “Oh, I know you think you’re another person, but soon you will learn better.”

    She could hear his boots clicking on the ground as he walked around to the front of her, see their movement in the corner of her eyes, flashes of black on the gray surface that had become her world in the hours she had been awake. The cold hard presence slider further up her back and then lifted. Above the frantic pounding of her heart, she could hear the swishing of cloth as he strode to in front of her, his boots barely peeking out of top of her vision. They seemed like big boots, black and military.

    “This, this is an introduction,” the voice said, the accent making it seem cordial. “I find it’s important to make good first impression. It’s what we carry with us always, our first impressions of the other person. I want you to remember this. I want you to remember the fear and the helplessness and your new name.”

    The pressure was against her head now, pressed deep into her hair against the top of her skull. Lost screamed in her mind, realizing what it was. There was a loud sound and sudden press—

    “And I want you to remember that most of all.”

    The Guardian’s voice fell on deaf ears.

    Yes, but we always get some kind of mission description. For example:

    =Garukan Dangerous=

    Extract subject: Domino, a human/xenoform hybrid sample capable of communicating with the xenoforms. The subject's psionic talents is a dangerous asset in the hands of the fleeing Garukan forces. Stop them from retrieving Domino. Should Domino fall into the hands of the enemy- eliminate the subject.

    Or

    The situation: Makarian fleet coming down on Blacksad. The winds tell them of the fall of the 41st Robot Army, local forces that you had to decomission.
    The flock that inhabits this little known galaxy is sent to strike at your group at your most vulnerable and possibly to plunder Blacksad in one fell swoop.

    Sure it tells us nothing about terrain or enemy composition, but it does tell us why we're there. Presumably Femto got such a description before their mission. Knowing what it is could help us better formulate a plan of action and select unit composition.

    Ehhh...

    Well, my internet's been crapping out on me. Again. So using school internets = fun.

    Anyway, about the Femto mission:

    Wolf and the rest of you moving in will be scouting. Understand that? SCOUT-ING. Meaning when shit gets hot, there's no reason for you to stay and slug it out. Your goal is to move in, ascertain the situation, gather intel on the size and disposition of the enemy forces, then fall back or hold your position until the main force arrives behind you, or something.

    But yeah, there's going to be a massive armored column right behind you, ready to blast the shit out of anything mean up there.

    Because if there's something capable of wiping out an entire unit such as Femto, either completely or to a considerable degree, I sure as hell am not going to send a small platoon to deal with it alone.

    Also, deploying people, expect some rides.

    Hopefully, I can deploy a group of Chimeras off the map to act as artillery support for you that I or your FC can call in.
    >> [CO] Col. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 03/01/11(Tue)17:49 No.14091268
    >>14090252

    A note on that, actually.

    For the most part, we get those kind of descriptions at the very start of the mission, or sometimes the gen thread prior to it.

    And, like you've been so keen to observe, it doesn't give much in the way of enemy disposition or the terrain, simply the goal.

    Typically, when I talk to Orbital about selecting a mission, I kind of get the same thing, although it's a bit more... in-depth.

    I still don't get maps and much on the idea of enemy size and whatnot.

    With some of these last missions, I haven't got any of those, aside from the vague transmission we received from each group at the target mission.

    And generally, I like to pry some information from Orbital before making any kind of decision on our next mission.

    So for the upcoming mission, we are, essentially, operating in the dark, aside from what's been thrown around in the thread and IRC.

    But hey, that's what a scouting party is for.

    Right, so unless my internet explodes again, I plan to CO the Femto mission.

    Which is occurring simultaneously with the one at Charlie, so technically, it wouldn't make sense for Geist to CO, even if he ends up doing it in the event that my internet craps out.

    If that happens, then, well fuck, handwavium all around.

    So yeah, Orbital, just how much time has elapsed since... Aggronia, anyway? I mean, you said transit time to Titan was about 2-3 months, yet outside in everywhere else due to space-time being a dick, 2 years has passed.

    Just wondering because this may mean Warsaw can get his hands on a legally aged Nomad's sister for his assistant.

    And just as a reminder, scouting mission. SCOUTING. So information gathering is the name of the game.

    And I'm not sending the targeting droid to femto with the main group (if at all), because it can easily become a liability, or a loss of potential firepower elsewhere.

    I mean christ, I'm sending the Land Fortress already.

    "Sir, I'm supposed to hold the rear on my own?"

    Captain Rakha communicated with his other soldiers through Psi-comm, idly answering Private Benny in an off hand fasion.

    "We're short on men. We need someone covering that sector of fire. Don't worry, we've ascertained that the chance of enemy incursion in that area is the lowest. I'd be surprised if you saw any action at all down there."

    Private Benny scratched his head, his terribly primitive solid projectile rifle slung at his back.

    "What's 'ascertained' mean?"

    Captain Rakha paused for a moment. This was the kid he was trusting to watch their rear flank? He shrugged. He had an offensive to plan. He couldn't let this sway his concentration.

    "It means we found it out. Now follow your orders. And utilize the chain of command, you should have complained to your squad leader and platoon leader before me."

    The private nervously saluted the captain before scampering off. Captain Rakha shook his head before turning his attention back to planning for their offensive. A simple mission, quick smash and grab. But they needed to wait for the right moment. A strike during the enemy guard rotation would maximize the chances of success, while minimizing casualties. That's what every commander hoped for; mission accomplishment with minimal casualties. The enemy guard rotation, intercepted through the primitive communications systems the insurgents used, was set for several hours yet. So they set up camp and waited, having posted security to watch the enemy positions in case of any changes. This was the part he hated the most; the waiting.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)21:46 No.14093779
    >>14093757

    A few hours passed, and one of Rakha's squad leaders sent a message to him via Psicomm.

    "Sir, the enemy guard positions seem to be shifting."

    Rakha quirked an eyebrow. It was a few hours early for that. Well, he wasn't one to let an opportunity go.

    "Alright. Platoon leaders, pick your men up. Leave security to cover our flanks. Let's get this mission done, and go home."

    ~~~
    The mission went down without a hitch. There were far fewer men guarding the compound than intel had led Captain Rakha to believe. A surprise, but a pleasant one. At the moment, his men led the hostages away from the compound to await transport to a more secure location. As always, his men were gaining accountability of the bodies of the enemy. Protocol and all that. He was coordinating with his Platoon Leaders, making sure all of his soldiers were accounted for. He reached Third Platoon, all his other soldiers having reported in without a hitch.
    "How's your platoon doing, Lieutenant?"
    "Ah... we haven't gotten word back from Private Benny, sir. Vitals are good, but he's not answering our calls."
    Captain Rakha thought for a moment before realizing that Private Benny was their worst equipped member. Unlike the others, who had implants for Psicomm, Benny used out dated external communication devices. It was possible he'd had an equipment malfunction. Being undersupplied was a bitch.
    "Was he still on rear guard?"
    "Yes sir."
    "Alright. Send me a team, I'll go check on him."
    "Roger."
    Captain Rakha was in a better mood than usual. His PL's were all reliable enough that he didn't have to worry about micromanaging, but for whatever reason he felt like doing things on his own right now. The four soldiers from Third Platoon followed behind him as he walked, keeping their sights trained about on the landscape around them. They reached Private Benny's position, seeing him laying in the prone, peering through the scope of his rifle. Rakha noted that the wire on his ear piece had been snapped. There was the problem. He stepped up, Private Benny keeping his gaze out towards the horizon. Rakha looked in the direction he was aiming, and was surprised to notice a large number of bodies strewn about.
    "That your doing?"
    The private jerked his head around, surprised. He stood hastily, saluting the captain.
    "Sir-"
    "At ease, private." Rakha looked the private over for wounds. Aside from the busted ear piece, he looked fine. "How are you feeling?"
    Private Benny scratched the back of his head. "Was almost outta ammo there, sir. It's a good thing ya'll showed when you did, I was gettin' nervous."
    Captain Rakha nodded, turning to the Corporal, the highest ranking member of the team that'd followed him. "Go police up the bodies."
    "Sir."
    The four soldiers moved off towards the bodies. Rakha looked back to the Private, who watched the team idly, through heavy lidded eyes. He looked a bit tired.
    "How close were you to being out?"
    "Uh..." The private opened the bolt on his primitive rifle, counting the rounds. "Three rounds."
    Rakha recalled that he'd been issued eighty rounds. Normally he wouldn't bother with such things, but Benny's case, in that he used a solid projectile weapon rather than a more advanced projector weapon, stood out in his mind.
    "So, held the position on your own? Didn't your squad leader tell you to fall back if you were in trouble?"
    The Private looked nervous. "Well... yes, sir, but I wasn't in trouble. I was doin' just fine, 'till I started runnin' low. I figure it was my job to keep these fellows off your back."
    "Indeed..."
    Captain Rakha looked over to the other soldiers as they searched the bodies and moved them into a pile. There certainly were a lot of them.
    "Well, get back to your squad. We'll be moving out soon."
    "Yes, sir!"
    The Private scampered off, leaving the Captain to wait for the other soldiers to complete their work. The Corporal stepped up to him after they were finished.
    "Done, sir... Did that kid really take all these guys out?"
    The Captain looked off in the direction of the corpses. "Guess so. How many?"
    "Seventy-seven, sir."
    Private Benny: Truth.
    Enemy logistics, and intelligence reports had shown that heavy scouts and patrols were sent to Benny's killzone in an attempt to ascertain the location of Benny's psionic signature. When they had confidently inserted an agent into their psicomm communication lines and found that their group would move during a guard switch they set up a decoy guard switch and had a pincer team ready to intercept.
    The one thing they hadn't counted on was Benny's complete lack of psicomm communications, which erased him from their map of plans entirely.
    A scout group was sent only to get taken out.
    A follow up assault group was sent to check it out only to have the same occur.
    At this point the enemy had assumed that a counter offense was at hand, and did sweeps of the forest. 25 men died turning their back.
    And so the story goes before their platoon leader called for a psicomm black out in an attempt to throw an enemy off whom they suspected was listening in on them.
    Benny is deaf in his right ear.
    >Part one, bitches.
    Zavier Shiffon ducked back behind the burnt out car. Just in time too, as he felt the metal frame of the car shudder under multiple impacts from detonating munitions.
    Or “Eggs,” as the ODF Sergeant called them.
    Shiffon looked across the street. The Sergeant was still there, along with another Gauss trooper from the platoon. Or rather, what was left of them when one of those eggs dropped right on top of them and blew them up. Even if it was classified as “low yield munitions,” having one detonate a foot from your face is bound to have some detrimental effects, Shiffon thought silently.
    He couldn’t stay put. Those insane Chickens would re-adjust their aim and drop a clutch of eggs right onto his head. Just like the Sergeant and poor Neph. But what could he do? He didn’t have anywhere to run, and he was alone. As far as he could tell, the rest of the platoon had been wiped out. He was just a simple university student, Lander’s blood! He was no good at fighting – he had never been in a fight in his life!
    A thought suddenly sprang to his mind. The only thing that had kept him moving forward was the scary Sergeant. With the Sergeant dead, what was stopping him from going back the way he came?
    And maybe attacking the damned Makarians from above?
    A grin spread across Zavier’s face. If he was good at anything, it was thinking, and math. If he could somehow get onto one of the square rooftops of the surrounding urban sprawl, and move right next to the Makarians, his angle of attack would be perfect, and their lobbed weaponry would be unable to hit him at all.
    Crouching low, Shiffon hurried back down the little side street, staying behind the ruined vehicle and out of sight of the Chickens.
    He flinched when he heard a set of eggs whistle through the air and explode right above the car, in a position that surely would have resulted in the loss of his favorite head.
    It was a beautiful sunset, the orange rays of the dying sun filtered through the unsettle dust of the battlefield. If it weren’t for the carnage and rotting corpses you could have put on a post card.
    “Say what you will about these Xeno fuckers, their carcasses make for a fine chair”, Sgt. Jack mused as smoked his last cigarette.
    Tonight was their last, the ammunition was all but gone, the enemy had them pretty much surrounded, and there were only a handful left.
    All in all, the sergeant blamed himself.
    Sergeant Jack led the 5th Recon unit Squad humorously known as a Fifth of Jack.
    He and his squad were only tasked with scouting the area for a possible offensive in that region. Command had been very clear about the “possible” part, the bugs had advanced faster than they anticipated. Not only that but the planet held very little for the ODF just a few colonists.
    It was that last part that had gotten them in trouble, they had found the settlement on the way back. Sergeant Jack knew that a xeno hoard was coming and that the folks would get over run. So he made the tough decision he was going to lead them back to the rendezvous point. He was a tough dog but a sap at heart. Unfortunately he had not counted on the problems with leading over 100 settlers over a 10 man recon unit; they had to dodge the advancing xenos at every turn. As luck would have it they were only 15 miles from the rendezvous.
    “We had a good run Sarge, hell these folks would have gotten slaughtered day one if you hadn’t gambled this rescue attempt.”
    The Sgt looked down at the fresh faced recruit and sighed.
    “That don’t mean much kid, hell it’s more a slap in the face that we are so close that it is comforting.”
    “Fate sure is a bitch Sarge” Chimed in his second command Reva “All you can do is hope for a little luck before she crushes your balls.”
    Reva was the one the toughest people Jack knew. She fought so hard the Sgt. was sure she was half bear. Why she didn’t take command from him would always be a mystery to him.
    Jack took a long drag. “Still it does me no comfort, I gave these people some hope, and told them I was going to help to safety, promised them a happy ending, Instead I lead them to be the main course of a xeno smorgasbord. Fuckin’ hero aren’t I”
    Silence followed.
    “Well aren’t any of you going to tell me it’s time to throw in the towel, leave these poor bastards and make a mad dash to safety, you know cut and run?”
    Reva gave a reply in the form of a punch to the face.
    “Listen up Sarge” as she stood above “ Every last one of us trusts you more than our own kin, each us would follow you to hell and back not because it’s the job but because it was you that that out in front.”
    “Each of us have seen shit that would have broken us bad, Sgt. But you always pulled us out, we agreed to help these people because it was the right thing and you knew it”
    “We’re tired of always being too late to help people, always sifting through the wreckage; Hell Sarge we all know what would have happened if we had left them.”
    Simmons chose that moment to pipe up “ She’s right, we all wanted to help them, I joined so I could help people, if we had listened to the orders, well the guilt would have haunted me, all my days Sarge I know it would be all my days.”
    Jack laughed as he picked himself up “You’re all a bunch of stupid bastards you know that, and hell if I wouldn’t want to make my last stand beside you.”
    Just then 2 more members of 5th came into to view.
    Ierick and Crysk were two of the fastest member of Jacks squad, and they were returning to report on how bad the road ahead was.
    “More bad news I see, well we all knew the odds when we agreed to this” Loretta the squad’s heart and soul voiced calmly.” It’s no use fretting about it now, dinner’s done, and I’ve pulled out all the stops considering it’s our last meal”
    “Wej know, we could smell a mile out hell it; why me ana Crys picked up the pace”
    “How do you plan to do that?” asked Reva curtly
    “ Why my dear we will cook them dinner” Jack replied.
    “Look we got enough bug carcasses here to feed an army so why not, the only things the bugs like eating more than us is themselves!”
    Jack slowly stood up
    ,”We cook up these bastards and have their friends coming for the dinner bell, hell the lay out of the land make this a giant wind tunnel the smell would travel for miles.”
    “And while their here the settlers will be making a run for the pick up, hell I don’t know if they’ll make it or even if they do if the ODF won’t leave them hanging but damn it if won’t give them the chance”
    >Posting slooooooowly.
    Moving down the street, Shiffon passed several of the large multi-storied housing complexes before ducking into an alleyway. Built to maximize land usage, the apartments butted up against one another, towering over the narrow twisting streets below. After several incidents where city fires had resulted in the deaths of hundreds of upper-story apartment dwellers when the residents found lower stories and their means of escape cut off by fire, city officials finally mandated that all such housing complexes be built with at least one fire escape route on the outside of each building that linked the roof to the ground floor and every floor between.
    After moving a dumpster to reach the escape ladder, Shiffon climbed four stories of the wrought iron staircase from the alleyway to the rooftop, where he would hopefully have a better angle on the alien invaders who by now were moving down the street. Running across the gravel-covered rooftop, Shiffon crouched against the parapet walls that lined the edge of the roof.
    His heart drumming in his chest, the Reg slowly peeked over the top down onto the street.
    In the street below, the three Makarians advanced down the street, communicating with each other in their avian language that consisted of fowl-like clucks and crows. Shiffon dared to poke his head out further. With the street eclipsed by the shadow of the building, Shiffon’s growing shadow was plastered across the high side of the building on the opposing side of the street, unnoticed by the bird soldiers.
    Slowly raising his arms, Shiffon brought the bulky Gauss gun to bear. The three Chickens were passing just below him now. At that angle, their lobbed explosives would either impact against the side of the parapet, or would go high and overshoot, he figured. And since the eggs seemed to either detonate on impact or shortly afterward, Shiffon figured that he would be relatively safe up on the roof.
    Hopefully.
    Well, I might as well post something mildly constructive while bumping the thread.
    >Because I'm bored, I suppose.
    With the situation concerning Lost, I've already authorized a mission to go save her. Granted, it's going to be run by Geist, and anyone who goes won't be available for any other missions that the rest of Bravo will be conducting while Geist and his team are away.
    So here's how I see it:
    After the Femto mission is concluded, Geist can, with a SMALL team can essentially break away from Bravo during the battle for Titan to go track down Lost. While Walker is likely give him permission and may/may not go through some channels to ensure that Geist and his (handpicked, probably) team aren't considered rogue elements/traitors (yeah, who am I kidding? They probably will be regardless), Geist and his crew will not be receiving any support from Bravo/Walker outside of what they initially get.
    That, or he can wait to mount his rescue mission after the battle at Titan is concluded, which would probably mean a higher success rate for our efforts on the planet, and maybe expect more support from Walker since he won't be dealing with someone who is essentially saying, "hey boss, can I go take 4 or 5 guys to go mount a rescue mission for a single person at a time when all of us would be put to better use dealing with the immediate situation around us?" And this is ignoring the idea that Lost was expendable to begin with.
    And, of course, that's not considering the fact that Lost may or may not already have a pre-grown clone with most of her memories in a nice little tube somewhere on the O'Reilly, that can be activated, or that Lost was expendable to begin with.
    The dim halls of the Vein hummed with roars of the ship's engines. Many a ship hand travel wearily through the Vein, as people from different parts of the ship were deposited into these under-maintained runways. Despite its traffic, very rarely do people find themselves in crowds, as each one are left to their devices and crossing each other by happenstance in their off time. Ender Spinelli, or Fenner whateverhisnameisanymore or an unnamed Marine walked through the walkways with his gaze travelling the ground. Not a single thought is even registering passed the hum of the O'Reilly's engines.
    Two cycles later, on Titan—the marine looks resolutely ahead in the sands he's caved in with personnel ordinance.
    Two cycles ago—he is contemplating the height of the drop off the bridge.
    Suddenly motion caught the corner of his eye, and Ender turned from the railing of the Vein. A person had just appeared in the corner of his eye, their back to him, and had dropped a few inches to the floor, stumbling to regain their balance. Her balance, he could see. She was wearing a bright red turtleneck sweater which had become disheveled, and a pair of tight blue jeans. The figure rubbed at her hidden face, the blond bun on the back of her head jiggling with loose strands. Her fingers were long, he realized.
    Her spine stiffened and she whirled about, a sudden danger filling the air. It was only then that he realized how tall she was, with a long stomach and long legs. Her face was pretty, though her lips were pressed tightly together and her eyes were both watery and strained behind her glasses. Her eyes took him in with a glace and she relaxed, the atmosphere on menace leaving the bridge.
    “Oh, I didn’t see you there,” she said, blinking. Almost as if unbidden, her hand reached up to her hair and started to tuck the loose strands back in. She peered at him intently, her forehead creasing in thought. Her eyes still looked as if they would overflow at any moment. “Private Ender is it?”
    Looking around she seemed to take in her surroundings for the first time, starting as an automated transport dutifully pushed a shipping container along the main line. “What are you doing here, private? I don’t believe you’re a porter.” Found tried to make her voice sharp, but failed again, Aberham’s words running through her head again and again, bringing new tears up no matter how far she pushed the thought down.
    "It’s specialist," the marine replied. Odd that even after abandoning his name, rank was something that stirred something in him. His shaven head ever since his entry to Mobile Demolitions had grew to a spike. Only recently did he take a razor to it again, the childlike demeanor he had coming here was gone, save for the stark restless eyes. "And well, I'm just wandering about, contemplating how far the fall down would be if I jumped, sir."
    His voice was sardonic. All the more to make the plain truth sound like a joke. He knew about the telepaths, figured thinking one thing and saying another was just a scum tell. But on the other hand, he found himself internalizing the information. [But I guess you already knew that] he thought inwardly.
    The civilian dress struck him odd. In this get up he suspected the child to be near, unless she—
    "Don't you?”
    Found blinked at him again, her hair forgotten. The words seemed to be travelling through a distant tunnel. They were there in her mind, yet she seemed to be having trouble focusing. Her mind had reset itself back to factory defaults again, her angry melting away into sorrow. She turned from the private—no, the specialist—and leaned over the side of the railing. It was a very long way down, certainly enough to kill anyone, even someone with the heartiness of a knight. She started to lean over, when her self-pity roiled up and churned in her stomach to hate.
    “Suicide is worthless,” Found said, anger making her voice tight. “You are wasting your own time and energy destroying a valuable resource. Many think the xenos suicidal, but there is a big difference between selflessness and suicidal. They know they are part of a larger entity, that they are an expended resource that can only repay its existence through selfless work. Us humans, we only think about ourselves, we don’t think about what we do to other. We… we…”
    A shudder wracked Found, all too near a sob. She had to swallow tears back as she rounded on the man, her lips twitching and her eyes clenched shut. She took long deep breaths and her lips formed a thin line as she straightened her sweater. Opening her eyes she stared into Ender’s. They were cold and dark, not sunken but… hollow. He was there but not, like a wraith haunting a place, unsure about its own corporeality.
    "Ma'am," the soldier corrects himself. "Perhaps you aren't in a good position to fill in as a moral proxy. As it is, you seem confused even about your humanity," he gives a salute, "Ma'am."
    It was plain to see the woman was going through lurches like he did when went through the won-ton soup madness. "But I digress. My thoughts of suicide are about as casual as talks on musical genres, alcohol consumption stories, and Hartford's real age. If monitoring my thoughts on the subject pollutes your psi-wave traffic I will stop."
    And he did.
    The specialist stood straight, snapped to attention, and looked completely straight ahead into nothing at all. A person's head had never been so empty. All his thoughts then started to flood about the woman before him. It was something, at least. He got bored of wandering.
    Part 6
    On Titan, Ender mused as he watched a roach consume Blaze's body. The flux had already gone, as did the other regs who were too sickened at the sight. The creature snarfed it up greedily, its jaws snapping as it ate the knight, armor and all.
    Found barked a laugh that was all too near a sob as she looked incredulously at the soldier in front of her. Shaking her head she turned back to the railing and watched him out of the corner of her eye.
    “I wonder if there is some unspoken privilege that comes with promotion to specialist to badmouth your superiors.” Found gave another bitter laugh. “Don’t answer that Specialist Ender, I don’t want to know. I guess people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, or however the pre-war adage goes. Morality is a luxury few people can afford in war, and I’m beginning to believe that humanity is as well.”
    Found examined the soldier, some sort demolition expert from his insignia, standing stock still next to her. Inwardly she sighed. A lot of people seemed to think empaths ran around delving everyone’s’ minds like some sort of thought police. Not to say she hadn’t skimmed the occasional mind, but she didn’t pry out of respect for… privacy? Decency? Well, if people wanted to fear her for what she was, why not give it to them? The specialist wanted her to read her mind, then why not?
Reaching out she entered the specialist’s mind. Mentally she raised an eyebrow. She had taken Ender’s statement about mental pollution to be some sort of phobic sneer, but he spoke the truth. His mind—well his active mind—was a hollow expanse, blanked of emotion, of drive, of idle thought. It wasn’t the void of a droid or corpse, but a pushing aside, a muting of what made a mind a mind, an almost trance-like state. She could feel his thoughts like unseen eyes hiding in the shadows, slowly encroaching back on the territory they had been driven from.
    Her eyebrow did quirk at that: a neat trick, or a curse. Keeping her mind-hand there, she examined her own thoughts. She could take all these memories, feelings, and emotions and dash them to the curb if she wanted, to wipe them off the table and become some cold unfeeling creature, no better then an emergent AI. But she would lose more then her humanity, she would her… “xenanity” as well. Domino and the Family used emotions just as well, perhaps better, than their human counterparts and she would alienate them if she did that. And that was the last thing she would do. They were the only ones who loved her.
    Her thoughts turning morose, Found idly ran a hand along the railing. “You seem to be very forthcoming with your opinions, Specialist. So tell me, what do you think I am?” She punctuated the question with a level stare at him, her blue and red eyes peering out of an emotionless mask.
    >> Part 8
    "What I think?" The specialist echoed. "I think you're human here like everyone else, and even though you hide behind your bug family, your human problems aren't something you can run away from." His head lolled to the side and looked bemusing over the long drop from the edge of the railings. He leaned against it, testing its sturdiness. "And you can write the book on xenoform love all you wish, about how they mindlessly love anything and mindlessly give their lives away without condition… but that feels more like a familial sort of relationship, don't you think?
    “And yet as humans we still look for that other that can understand us even across stars. No matter how far, no matter what.” Ender pushed himself off the railing let his feet land lightly on them. He stood straight and with the ease that physical conditioning granted him, allowed him to walk the rails like a cat as he mused another thought. "You look like someone who just got genuinely rejected as a human. Did you start sprouting antennae during the date or something?"
    Found looked up at the man walking the railing besides her, a bitter smile flickering on her lips. “You must have a death wish, insulting your betters and then balancing precariously on the lip of a long fall within arm’s reach.” Found thought about pulling herself up next to him on the railing, but she had bargained away her prowess what seemed a long time ago now.
    “After being on both sides of the tracks, so to speak,” Found said, leaning her arms against the railing and peering up at the man, “you be surprised how little we call ‘humanity’ is exclusively human… and how the little that is left is worth having. What if I told you that I choose to be human? What if I told you I could let go and let what happened to my eye,” she gestured to the red eye, “take the rest of me? What would I really lose?”
    >> OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 03/03/11(Thu)20:24 No.14117279
    >> Part 9
    Behind her spectacles her eyes held hot tears that threatened to pour out. “What if I told you the only reason I wanted to, the only reason I was willing to try, did reject me as a human? What if those human traits I did have: compassion, empathy, the desire for intimacy, what if he said I didn’t have them, that I was not worthy of them.” She barked a bitter laugh, “No, he called me a monster because of the things I’ve done… he didn’t even see me feed my eye yet.”
    The specialist peered over to Found, half a brow raised. You're kidding me right? A lovers spat? A rejection? This is what the powers that be have called me down for? Fine- I accept your challenge of humanity. And I propose—he spins on his heels and then drops down jarringly on the railing to sit on it. "I propose that all humans, even us—especially us—are monsters.
    “You can dress up action and reaction to moral compulsion or extrapolate minor evils against greater goods but deep down it is our prerogative as monsters to observe this universe and see it through in the framework that we wish to see it as. If the thing that you seek, the person that you wish to gain, is unattainable it is likewise human for us to move on from it. You're an adult right? You shared all the experiences and the sparks of growth that you shared with your kin sister"
    At this, the specialist bends down, his stark eyes greeting hers, "Or are you in fact just as young as the tube that they pulled you out of?"
    >> Part 10
    Found raised her right hand, a sneer of rage building on her face. A slap rang out as Ender’s face moved a fraction left. Found clenched and unclenched her hand: the specialist had a hard face. She looked him right in the eyes: hers still smoldering with angry and his still the same hollow expression. A tingle ran along the skim she had running on his mind, but the mind was still a cold place where thoughts ran thin and ghosted. She could feel the anger draining from her as she looked into those cold eyes.
    “You… you shouldn’t insult a woman scorned,” she said, with less force then she wished. Found sighed. “But I understand the wisdom you’re trying to say between your barbs. I find the morality... restraining. I find it all restraining. I could be so much more, and yet I’m trapped by these petty emotions and desires. It’s this damn tangle.” Found rubbed her right hand with her left. She rarely missed the training, reactions, and muscle memory she had given up in that delve, but now was such a time.
    Ender was unmoving, the redness creeping into his cheek making the vertical scar stand out all the more. “I know I’m naïve. But my life is mine, and in many ways it did start right out of the tubes. I’ve discarded her memories: they are hers, not mine. Domino’s idealism has made me a bit of an optimist.” She gave a bitter laugh. “Here I am, a nigh-power empathy and psionicist, leader of an army of Xenos, and I can’t get over personal problems when some creep dumps me.”
    Found breaks eye-contact, looking at the floor for a moment. “Sorry for slapping you.”
    >> OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 03/03/11(Thu)20:26 No.14117309
    Once a knight, always a knight thought the specialist. He often forgot that among combat clones, he was by and large just a human even if he was conditioned and mentally trained as a clone. His jaw clenched tight his tongue scooped up dead teeth before he spat them out on the floor. His hand gripped tight on the railings as he swayed himself to sit on them. "You’ll forget about it soon enough," the specialist answered back. "The problems, that is, not the part where you pride yourself on being the baroness to the Red King's bug army. And once you do you can go back to that simple life not ever knowing how the day goes by."
    He looks into her eyes.
    "Your problems, believe it or not, are simple and fixable going forward," he dared. He wasn’t one to presume the workings of the opposite sex, or whether women took deeply to being rejected, much less having their confidence as a human shot at. But it would interest him if their local bug commander was capable of taking such hits, if lobotomizing his mind here and now would be construed as a sign of xenoform weakness.
    >> OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 03/03/11(Thu)20:27 No.14117321
    Regardless, he hadn't had the opportunity to even test the limits of his own self in a while. Not since clone camp. The singular image of seeing his—no—Fenner's wife there with a distant look made him reel inwardly. Soon. And he was dancing on it. Soon, perhaps he could find what it means to die right. But tonight…
    Tonight, bewitching moons danced at him to make him throw his life around towards the extreme opinions of a woman he surprisingly understood.
    Found looked doubtfully at her hand. She guessed muscle memory and actual muscle were different things. She frowned down at the teeth and blood scattered on the floor, giving her time to thing about the specialist’s words. Was everyone on this ship some sort of amateur psychologist? Did everyone know her lives story by the few words they exchanged with her? Sometimes she just wished she could beam her thoughts into other people’s brains just so they would stop assuming. …well, she could, but she still had standards.
    Found leaned over and pulled the teeth from the floor with some mild telekinesis, floating them in front of the demolitionist. Pulling the moisture from the air—and making sure nothing but the water came out of the blood—she formed a little box which she dropped the teeth into, sending a rattle out into the Vein. Sealing the box with another collection of ice, she pressed the box into the specialist’s hands.
    >> OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 03/03/11(Thu)20:29 No.14117334
    “You should go to medical with those. A little prototein and they should be able to reconnect them. I’ll maintain the ice as long as you’re on the ship, but it should be easy enough to break open.” She looked over at the strange man. “You seem pretty… ‘experienced’ for some fellow out of basic not so long ago. I could… pry, but I’d rather you tell me how some literally mindless demohead knows how to make all my troubles go away and live the ‘simple’ life of a soldier in charge of one of the most potent weapons humanity has ever had.”
    "I would welcome it," grinned the specialist with half hooded eyes. "Aren't ya supposed to be a head doctor 'fore you went bug eye on us? Maybe in the end I can have someone tell me that my problems are shallow repeti'shins of some distended human drama. And that I can be told to move on and die honorable-like for my fellow man-monsters."
    Yesssssssss
    Also, I'm going to go eat dinner. All of you who want in on this mission, speak up. Vehicles, people. Everyone who goes with Wolf either goes on foot or uses a walker-type. No exceptions.
    Striders and BiTanks are the order for today, preferably a 2:1 ratio. Once I get at least two BiTanks, you can pick your vehicle.
    This is a scouting mission, but Femto was hit hard, and their original mission was to investigate large habitats uncharacteristic of xenos. Mission logs indicated 80 minutes of pitched combat before contact was lost.
    And for the last time, this is a scouting mission. I'm sending you some serious firepower so you aren't completely screwed in the tunnels you'll be moving in. If you don't want vehicles, that's fine.
    Also, I want the xenoforms in on this one to support the scout team. They are to hang back behind them and rush in when things start getting hot.
    Additionally, the main force that will consist of a massive armored column will be ready to deploy should the scouting party need assistance or I deem it necessary to have a Land Fortress clog up the tunnels and seriously fuck some shit up.
    Post in the thread, people. Name, class, and vehicle you want to use.
    I'll tally everything up once I'm done eating. And yes, I'll be running this mission, and I'm not going to be in IRC to witness your discussions. So telling me what you want in IRC won't do you any good.
    Right, Ceebee, you are now [Ss1]. You have an [Az] droid attached to you. You cost 7 points. Make that shit count.
    Current combat roster:
    [ClL1] PFC Axebeard
    [BtL2] Pvt. Cork
    [Md1] SPC. Ender
    [Ss1] Pvt. Ceebee + 1 [Az] Droid
    [RnR] Sgt. Wolf
    [Ex] Sgt. Aberham + 1 Spec Droid team
    [E1] Pvt. Renaud + 2 [E] droids
    [drA] Pfc. Dragon
    [ooK] Pfc. Nomad
    [FU] Pvt. Foolscap
    [M1] Pvt. Djierks
    [M2] Pvt. Warden
    Weird, since you're late and I accidentally the limit, you're benched to [TA].
    Good idea.
    Okay people, deployment time.
    Green marks the deployment area.
    Axebeard, you're up first. You're the dark blue line. Move up and watch whatever is over there. Punch anything that doesn't look friendly.
    First squad, you're the yellow line. Move up quickly and take an offensive formation. Cork, move up with Wolf. Ceebee, lag behind. When things get bad, I want you running up into their faces and blasting away.
    Second, you're the orange line, you move up second. I want one [M] covering each side of the tunnel.
    Foolscap, you're the light blue lines. Act as recon with your stealth systems, and pick which route you want. If things look bad, bail.
    So Axebeard and Cork would drop closest to the mouth tunnel, with First and Second squads behind them. Foolscap would be near Axebeard and Cork.
    Good luck, Bravo. Watch yourselves out there.
    You are thinking of Soap. I don't have stealth. I can take some TA actions, I can move things telekinetically, I can light stuff on fire, and I can teleport people or enemies.
    >>14119869
    Ceebee, technicalities may mean that you'll be sent with an [A] instead of an [Az]. Wish I could send in an [Az], but apparently I can't send spec class droids to non-spec classed units.
    So instead of the Spartan Laser setup, you get the rocket launcher setup.
    That I am, then.
    And seeing as you are right, do what you can - this is a scouting mission. Try to find methods to expose whatever is ahead of the group.
    I'm going to load you up with 40 programs to start with. 8 points spent.
    Use your best judgement.
    You need to wait for the deployment map, Axebeard.
    Although it's not as if I don't appreciate your enthusiasm.
    Right, Ceebee, you're getting one [A] droid riding your strider.
    Cork, you have the other [A] droid, since these things come in pairs. He'll be riding on your BiTank, so you can have twice the AP.
    Wait what? So do I get an extra action if I'm firing AP shells because I'm also controlling the droid, or just more ammo?
    You bot him.
    The [A] droid chilling on the top of your vehicle.
    Technically, you could order him to take over the rear gunnery position. Maybe.
    In any case, he would essentially be an extra gun you can shoot.
    On the bench, Murray. Pick up a [TA] tag and help ensure your buddies aren't eaten by some giant cave crawler.
    Seriously, this entire mission reeks of the Sci-Fi stereotype where group of marines are sent to investigate missing group/derelict base/etc. only to get eaten and shafted by whatever got the first group and need saving by some civilian.
    So if the Femto mission runs past 5 rounds, would those of us that did Charlie be allowed to TA?
