"Yer a long way from home, boy."

The bear of a man crashes down into the chair opposite you, glaring at the small block of wood you've been slowly whittling into the image of an eagle's head all voyage as if it somehow offended him. His one good eye flicks back to your face.

"Yer not more'n a pup, probably haen't even kilt a man yet. You ent been a Kjorstav long, er I woulda seen ye." The man grinned behind his ale-drenched beard, "Any man on this ship could kick seven shades o' shit outa ye, so tell me," he leaned back, lifting a hand to scratch at the patch covering his left eye, "what in the 13 hells are ye doin here?"

You set down your pet project, and stare silently at it, pondering the question. Why are you here?

As your father's fourth son, you stood to inherit no land, no title, and were even too lowly to marry anyone of consequence. Back on the Isles, you would be a shame and hindrance to your family, and could only hope to become a Minor Laerd of some paltry holding on a rocky spit of land, if your were lucky. It was said that new lands had been discovered to the far East, across the sea, and that those who took the name of Kjorstav could win land, titles, and honor conquering the savage peoples there.

Why are you there? You're there because you have no other options. At least your father had seemed proud of you, for once in your life, and had even gifted you your great-uncle's waraxe before you set sail. You raise your eyes to the one-eyed man across from you.

    What do you say?

You feel a familiar anger stir within you. Seven shades of shit, aye?

"Why am I here? To remove your testicles if you don't stop bothering me," you growl, picking your eagle back up.

The man's grin slips from his face for a moment, and he glowers at you dangerously.

"Yer gonna remove my balls, eh?" he said. "You think yer cut out ta be a Kjorstav?" He leaned forward, and dropped his voice to an almost conspiratorial level. "Well, I got news for ye. Ye ent really gonna know that till we hit the Savagelands. Ye aint really a Kjorstav till ye bloodied yer blade on a savage. They got talons on their hands the size of a dagger, covered in poison that'll kill a man in ten steps. They're women kill the men after they fuck, and drink the blood to give the child strength like no man's gotta right to." His face became serious. "And we're headed into the thick of 'em. Ain't no man gonna sign up for that 'less he's gotta reason. You wanna hold yer's tight? Fine. But I'll have no man on my damn ship who's not cut out to be in our family."

His ship? You look around you, noticing that the other Kjorstav are watching your exchange with the one-eyed man.

Then you realize: you just told Captain Tyrin you were going to cut his balls off. Not that you'd met, but you expected someone more... Captainly.

    What do you do?

Fuckin' A. We shouldn't be a dick just for the sake of it (not around violent men who carry swords) but we're quite literally here because we have no goddamn choice. If we were a pussy, we'd have stayed at home and led a miserable life as a poor man. We chose Door B, High Chance Of Violent Death with Slim Chance of Success. So if we're on this ship at all, we are most certainly not a pussy. And since we're ALREADY sailing towards Death By Savage Beast-Men, we're not terribly impressed by El Capitan. One violent end is as good as another.

"I'm man enough. Show me the savage lands. Let's take what we want and to hell with anyone who gets in our way."

The Captain eyes you. "Ye might look like a useless fuck, but ye got stones, and ye got a shred of honor, and that's somat, I suppose." He narrows his eyes, and lays a hand on the sword at his side. "Ye might have what it takes. Ye don't look et, but I've been wrong before. But ef ye should turn an piss yerself when yer faced with a savage warband, yer a weakness. Yer leaving yer brothers to die. Ef I see even a shred of cowardly b'havier, I'll split ye in half meself."

He stood from the table, seeming not at all drunk as he adjusted his belt. "That said, welcome home, brother."

You fumble your way to the lower deck, settle into your bench, still warm from the man who sat last shift, grab your oar, and pull.

A month goes by slowly when you are new to the sea, and slower still when most of your time is taken up rowing. But the month passes, and as your legs grow accustomed to the sway of the ship, your arms and back grow strong from the hours spent at the oars.

You do not speak with Captain Tyrin again on the voyage, except for the occasional command that would be given to any sailor. "Stow that line", "scrub harder", "row faster". You begin to get to know your brothers, the other Kjorstav. In time, you become a part of the crew. Over time, you also learn every part of the ship, every nook and cranny, and you make some interesting finds; a short dagger, a single misplaced leather bracer, a whetstone, some spare line, and a deck hatchet. You even win a few bits of jewelry from a few of your brothers in a game of Ketch.

One day, as you come up from your shift at the oars, you notice a feeling of excitement on deck. Turning around, you see why.

    Land.

Captain Tyrin is addressing his quartermaster, and you overhear the last bit of what he is saying, "... the brothers outfitted. We'll beach the ship, an' see if we can't set up some sorta fortifications afore the savages swarm us." His tone is light, and he is grinning. "If we can clear 'em outa the surrounding area, we can set up somethin' permanent." He scratched his chin. "We should send out a scout er two, te see what we're up against. Git some volunteers, and tell em goin' first 'el be worth their while."

He turns from the quartermaster, and become locked in conversation with the First Mate, The quartermaster begins calling out names and handing out pieces of armor.

Volunteer to scout. Disdain all armor; request earth-colored clothes and a proper shortsword. Once onshore, roll around in the dirt a bit to make your attire splotchy in color tone, and take mud to your face - not much, just some jagged streaks across it to disrupt the 'outline' of your face.

You walk up to the quartermaster. He turns to you, and mutters "What d'ya want? Wait until I call yer name, then ye can pick up yer weapons and armor."

You draw yourself to your full hight, anxious to seem more confident than you are. "You know who I am, right? I'm the man who'll be the first to step on that land."

The quartermaster stops short, and takes a long look at you. After a pause, a slight smirk appears on his face. "So ye want te be first off the ship? Ye know what's out there? Ye know what the savage is like?"

    You nod your head.

The quartermaster just shakes his head. "Well, the Kjorstav were born to die. I guess ye just want te get it over an' done with. He pulls out a helm and sword, holding them out for you to take. "Yer te scout out the area, and report back here by dusk. Ef ye come back, we'll know ef there's somat out there. Ef ye don't..." he shrugs, "well, I guess we'll know then too."

You take the sword, but refuse the helm. "I'd rather have a thick cloak, brown if you have one. Any dark color will do."

"Boy," growls the quartermaster, still holding the helm, "et's stupid enough to go scout'n on yer first trip to the savagelands. Yer gonna go without armor?"

"I just need the cloak," you say.

He shakes his head and mutters something under his breath as he digs around in the armor barrel, eventually coming up with a long, thick, green cloak. He hands it to you, and intones "To yer death, Kjorstav, for blade, blood, and brotherhood." The ritual goodbye was one only used when the brother leaving was not expected to return.

You throw the cloak over your shoulders and belt the sword on, and the quartermaster turns to give another brother his weapons.

You watch the shoreline approach. Is there anything you want to do before you leave?

As the fourth son of a well-off lord, you dedicated most of your time studying under a tutor, playing in the woods, cavorting with village children, and other such pursuits.

You can write and read, and have a basic knowledge of mathematics. You are decent with a sword, better with an axe, and not terrible with a bow.

Your mind has always been stronger than your body. You are short for your people, and have been the butt of many jokes for it. It has given you a short temper, and a need to prove yourself.

You are moderately skilled at woodcraft, spending much of the time your family ignored you hunting in your family's woods. You've never tried mapmaking, but it couldn't hurt to try.

This, and focus on the differences between them and humans. We can try to "do our own thing", but traditions are there for a reason. For all we know the savage is colorblind and has little experience with metal armour, which would explain the quartermaster's puzzlement.

Are we trying for getting the maximum amount of information, stealth or attacks of opportunity? Former shows off our value as a scout, second gives initiative to our side assuming the other guy doesn't screw up, the third shows we're good enough to handle ourselves in battle.
How many of us are there on ship? Is this expedition trying to make a permanent settlement or just something temporary until we call in ships with livestock, craftsmen and women?

Information should be our focus. We're not much of a fighter, as the Lore Master has said, but we're smart, educated, and have woodcraft skills. We're well-suited for scouting, and no war leader worth a damn is ignorant of the value of good intelligence.

Thinking about what it is you are about to do, you realize that you know next to nothing about the Savagelands other than rumors you heard back home and aboard the ship. You know some of it must be embellishment, and you need to know what. You need to talk to someone who's not only been to the Savagelands before, but someone who will tell you the truth without inflating their own stories. You know who you need to talk to.

Skarvi. He's a veteren of the Savagelands, and his time there changed him. He is quiet and withdrawn, but when he speaks it is with an authority even the captain cannot match.

You find Skarvi sharpening a short sword in his bunk, its twin beside him. He looks up as you enter. "Blood flows, brother," you say.

    "Heart beats." he replies.

"And still we live." you finish the ancient greeting. "I've volunteered to be part of the scouting party, and I'd like to come back alive, if possible. What can you tell me of the Savagelands and the creatures who live there?"
    >> Lore Master !SUJW787.AM 03/05/11(Sat)05:55 No.14134965
Skarvi sets down his blade, sighing. He looks at you through his pale white hair, and says, with an air of practice, "First, forget what ye heard about the Savages and that dark continent, most of what ye know is bullshit." He looks you in the eye as he speaks, never looking away. "The savages do not have talons. They do not sacrifice their infants. They cannot burn you with a look, and they cannot spit poison. They are humans, like you or I, and they die like humans. They wear simple cloths, mostly wool, died jet black, and have black markings on their faces, like the Mininir. They mostly use long sharpened poles and poisoned knives made of bone. If they are expecting a fight, they will set traps and wait in ambush, and barring that will swoop in sitting on trained beasts with feet like iron."

A far-off look is in his eyes as he talks, as if looking through the wall of the ship at the land it is approaching. "As far as the land itself, there is to much to simply tell you. I can offer only this advice: if you think you recognize a plant or tree, you don't. The only things good for eating there are the rabbits and squirrels."

He sees the startled look on your face and chuckles. "Aye, they've got rabbits and squirrels. Some of the same birds, too. The Savagelands aren't some mystic realm of faerie, it's just far away." He picked up his blade and whetstone again. "But I can tell ye more of that when we're out scouting."

Fuck yes, once we set off we stick to him like tar. It seems most either doesn't know what to expect or expects the wrong things. Let's bring down one of those birds on the way back if feasible, so everyone can check out the corpse.

We might drop subtle hints to the captain that newcomers should be paired with an experienced Kjorstav so they don't crap themselves to death off poison berries.

Thanking Skarvi for the advice, you move back to the main deck. The ship has come quite close to the shore, and most of the other Kjorstav are armored up. The quartermaster, along with the Captain and 2 other armed and armored brothers, stand at the bow of the ship, watching the shore loom larger.

The Captain sees you, and calls you over. "Ye realize," he says, "that most scouts don't come back? That you'll likely be heading to the Twilight Fields?"

    You nod.

"And ye ent gonna turn and piss yerself?"

You glare a "no" at him.

"Fine then," he says. "Ye and Skarvi'll head te the north, Ben and Davi'll head South. Soon as we're on the beach, yer gonna leap off the bow, and get goin. You see anythin', ye come back and let us know." As he speaks, Skarvi walks up beside you, also looking out at the shore, and the forest beyond it.

Another half hour passes, and soon enough the ship is pushing itself onto the beach. Skarvi nods to you, and you leap off the bow, and hit the foreign sand. You wait for Skarvi to jump down, and both of you begin jogging north, taking in the sights of the fabled Savagelands.

This is where you'll make your home, you think. No fourth son gets land unless he wins it, and you will win this land.

You both head into the trees. What do you do?

You and Skarvi continue north for an hour or two, before you come to a small stream. Thinking back to your days hunting in the swampy forests you grew up in, you smear some mud from the back on your face. Skarvi looks at you with a blank face, but when you explain that you're doing it to stay hidden, he shrugs and fills a water skin.

As the mud dries on your face, you take stock of what you and Skarvi have together. You each have a pack with a day's worth of food and some basic supplies: string, firesticks, whetstones, spare knives, waterskins, and some chalk. Skarvi is outfitted in a metal helm, a studded leather vest, leather bracers, and is wielding a matched pair of short swords. You are wearing wool pants and shirt, sturdy boots, and a thick, dark green cloak with pockets and a hood. You carry your single sword at your hip.

As you and Skarvi continue scouting through the forest, you attempt to keep track of the lay of the land, to try and mark on some sort of map back at the ship. You see some deer droppings, and sign that a bear has passed through recently. The forest around you is thick with massive moss-covered trees and heavy fallen logs acting as home for all kinds of fungi. A light drizzle has picked up, soaking the ferns and other underbrush.

As you progress north, Skarvi shows you some of the plants. This one is good for eating, the bottom of this one is painful to touch, rubbing this other one on a rash will reduce it, and this one makes a tea that will put you to sleep. Eventually, you both come across a river, cascading over a short set of falls. You decide to stop here for a short break, when a twig snaps just to the east of you. Skarvi drops to a crouch and pulls his swords.

    What do you do?

Looks like the quest lives! To recap:

You are one of the Kjorstav, a group of marine warriors who fight under the command of the Durden King, part of a massive effort to conquer the Savagelands.

As the fourth son of a Durden Lord, you stood to inherit no lands or titles, and so joined the Kjorstav hoping to win them for yourself fighting the savage.

You are shorter than most of your people, and no great talent in a fight (though you can hold your own), but you were tutored throughout your youth, can read and write, and picked up a fair amount of woodcraft from years of hunting alone on your family's land. Because of your status and stature, you have been the butt of many jokes throughout your life, giving you a short temper and a need to prove yourself.

To prove your worth to your Kjorstav brothers, you have volunteered to be an advanced scout through the dense, wet forest of the Savagelands, accompanied by a veteran of the Savagelands, Skarvi. You and Skarvi were stopped by a river, taking a short break, when you both heard a crack, like a breaking twig, come from the east. Skarvi has readied himself for a fight, drawing his 2 short swords, and has signaled you to do the same. You, wearing a thick green cloak and bearing a muddied face for camoflauge, have drawn your single sword and crouched down, facing the noise. Skarvi signals to you to go around and come up on the noise from the South, while he does the same to the North. What do you do?

Drawing your cloak around yourself and keeping the glinting steel of your sword hidden, you creep slowly south, placing your feet with care so as not to alert any savages to your presence. You pick up a handful of mud as you pass the river bank, knowing that you will need any advantage you can get.

The cloak and your skill at woodcraft keeps you hidden ans you begin angling east. Hopefully, whatever made the noise is just an animal, and not a savage. You whisper a quick prayer to the Shaper of Blades, asking for the strength and wit to defeat your enemies.

As you approach where you estimate the noise was made, you slow and drop to a crawl. Perhaps you should wait for a signal from Skarvi, or maybe he won't need your help at all. You crawl to the edge of a short drop and, peeking through the brush, you see what made the noise.

A young boy, most likely 9 or 10 years old, crouches, humming lightly to himself, holding a crow's feather. He is garbed all in black, with soft boots and a short knife sticking out from his belt. His face looks flat to you, with a wide nose set deep into his head, giving him a slightly squashed appearance. You watch him from your vantage point as he shuffles about, finding more feathers, a smooth stone, and a yellow flower. He keeps them in a small leather pouch at his hip. As he happily ambles about, you catch a glimpse of Skarvi, slowly approaching from the north, blades readied and eyes locked on the child.

    Let Skarvi take the initiative.

He might see us, but killing him will alert the savages of our groups presence before the camp is fully set up.

On the other hand, for all we know the Savages might already know we're around.

Anyway, kids prove that there is a savage settlement nearby.

Do we have anyone who can speak the savage with the savages? if so, it might be useful to capture and interrogate this child. If not, then make a quick decision on the merits of leaving it a potential spotter versus it being missed later and alerting the enemy. It's not a very impressive foe, so we might as well leave give first blood to Skarvi, who is senior.

Consider whether a child is likely to be playing alone in the woods, with so many things around to kill it. Either there's a settlement nearby, or its guardians are near enough to protect it. If we haven't already, smear our sword with mud so it doesn't glint from sunlight, with the bonus that any wounds are guaranteed to be infected.

Realizing that as focused as he is on the child, Skarvi may miss another savage if it sneaks up on him. You smear your handful of mud on your blade, dulling its shine, and keep a watch for any further savages.

You scan the forest further to the east, and see nothing. If this child has a guardian, they aren't close. Perhaps he merely wandered from his village. Perhaps you can capture him and coax a location out of him.

Suddenly, Skarvi leaps from the brush, tackling the boy and wrapping a gnarled hand around his throat. The boy manages a squeak before his windpipe is blocked, and he scrabbles for his knife. Your heart is racing, and you frantically scan the forest again, eyes flickering back to the scene occasionally.

Skarvi kneels on the boy's knife hand, and clubs him in the forehead with the wooden pommel of one of his swords. The boy goes still.

You give a low whistle to signal your presence. Skarvi motions you over, so you drop from your hiding place, still looking east, and approach him. "Do the savages have a language?" You ask in a whisper. Skarvi nods, still looking at the child. "Do you speak it?"

"No," he says. "but Kaer does, a bit." He pulls the small, curved bone knife from the boy's belt and carefully slides it into his own. "It'll be slow goin', but we can get him back to the ship by dark."

"Won't the theft of a child alert the savages to our presence?"

"They'll know we're here soon, if they don't already. Et least now we can figure out where they are, an' crush them in one go. We can win a pitched battle easy," he looks to the treetops as he speaks, "it's ambushes and sneak attacks that make the savage dangerous."

He motions toward the child. "You carry 'im, and we'll start back to the ship. I'll be about, watching your back. Ef ye hear me give a whistle," he demonstrates a high-pitched, trilling whistle, " then ye start runnin'. This little fuck's all we got outa this mission, so gettin' 'im back to the ship is more important than yer life. Ye don't drop 'im, an' ye don't stop runnin till yet get to the ship. Understand?" You nod. "Right. Lets get a move on."

You walk to the child and, with a grunt, throw him over your shoulder. You begin walking slowly South as Skarvi disappears into the forest.

About 2 hours go by, and Skarvi reappears sporadically, telling you that he's seen no further sign of savages. He disappears soon after. The sun is sinking in the west when you hear a sharp, trilling whistle, and a scream.

We wouldn't want to pull the arrow out any way. Not without a doctor and some medical tools around. Pulling it out would sever veins, unblock blood flows, and tear more tissue. At most we would want to break the shaft. But we won't do that either.

We may as well run like a motherfucker. With dusk upon us and our camouflage, going to ground might work, but we could make no headway crawling with the captive in tow, and they'd canvass the area till we're found. Besides, if the arrow was poisoned, we have little time to reach help.

If we realize we won't reach the ship in time, and an oppertunity presents itself (a narrow ravine or small sea cave) dive in there, keep the captive in front of us to discourage arrows or blowguns, and make a fight of it. Hide behind a corner or bend, and their spears won't be much use, and our sword has longer reach then bone daggers. Make as MUCH NOISE AS POSSIBLE while fighting, and hope like HELL our allies hear it and come running.

The effort is too much, and you stumble to your knees, screaming as loud as you can. Perhaps you are close enough to the ship for a rescue, if they hear you.

Still screaming, you pull your dagger from your belt, and back yourself up to a tree. You sit the boy on your lap, and hold the razor sharp blade to his throat. All you can do now is try and buy time.

Several black-garbed savages emerge from the woods, bone-tipped arrows aimed at you. Their dark eyes are locked on you, and you see a venomous hatred in them.

You heft the knife, letting them know exactly what you'll do should they approach. A woman comes from behind them, also clothed in black, and says something in their slow, slurring language, fear apparent on her face.

The bow-wielding savages look conflicted, but keep their aim on you.

All eyes are on you and the boy.

Though you feel sick to your stomach with fear, you manage to work up a manic grin. You begin bellowing a rowing song you learned on the ship, your deep voice carrying through the trees. Occasionally, you stop your song to call out Skarvi's name, but you get no response.

The savages look afraid. They see a man from across the sea wielding a strange shimmering bone, arrow stuck into him, surrounded on all sides, smiling and singing. Your ploy is working, and they are beginning to back off. All but one.

He's bigger than the others, and he has no bow. Instead, he wields a long spear, tipped with a wicked bone blade. His face is covered with black lines, criss-crossing in intricate patterns. He says something, and lowers the spear at you.

The woman calls out, and rushes to him, chattering in that strange language. He appears unmoved by her pleas, and moves toward you.

A hatchet blooms from the forehead of the woman, and a great gout of blood flows from her as she falls to the ground.

Suddenly, your brothers surround you, and the savages are fleeing. Several fall to heavy axe blows, while a few launch their arrows into the oncoming horde before melting away into the woods.

You feel rough hands lift you up, and the boy leaves your lap. Only then do you realize the pain in your shoulder has grown, and that you feel weak. Darkness falls on you, and you drift into a fevered sleep.

You remember little of the fever, only that it was easier to stay mostly unconscious than to wake.

When you do eventually wake, you find yourself in a tent, covered in a bear skin.

Your shoulder is bandaged, and you still feel weak, but the pain in your wound is no longer the burning agony it was earlier, and has subsided to a dull ache. You see some clothing lying across the tent from you, under your great-uncle's axe.

You feel a mighty thirst and stand from the bed. You stumble a bit, but catch yourself. The tent is tied up tight, and you cannot tell what time of day it is.

Working the kinks out of your muscles, you walk over to the small pile of your belongings. You pull on a pair of pants, but find it too painful to pull on a shirt. Well, your wound could use some air anyway.

Still feeling a thirst, you pull the ties holding the tent closed apart, and open the tent flaps. Harsh morning light stings your eyes, and you throw your arm up to block the light.

You find that you must have been out for several days. A forest of sharpened stakes surrounds the camp, and several small buildings have been erected. A large bonfire has been built in the center of the camp, and many of the Kjorstav are cooking small animals, speared on sticks, over it. It is a thriving camp.

A shout comes from your right, and one of the men you grew to know on the ship, Davin, laughs and walks to you.
"You tough bastard, ye finally got up of'n yer arse!" He slaps you on the back, bringing a grimace of pain to your face. "I put money on ye dying, what with the savage poison worken' ets way through ye, but for once I'm glad te lose!" He chuckled at what he must have considered the wittiest of jokes. "The Captain'll likely want te see ye. He's over at the west wall, over lookin' the builin'."

You take a moment, and scan your surroundings. You don't see a face you had hoped to. "Skarvi. Where is Skarvi?"

Davin's laugh dies, and he becomes somber. "Ent seen Skarvi fer days," he says. "We put out a search party, but they ent found nothin'. Poor sumbitch was likely taken by the savages for food." He shakes his head. "But we'll repay 'em ten times for every one of us what they kill. It's nice to see you still alive."

He looks you in the eye. "Blood flows."

    "Heart beats," you reply.

"And still we live." He nods to you, and walks back to his business.

You still feel thirsty, and the smell of roasting meat stirs your hunger, as well. The captain won't mind if you grab some grub, surely.

You grab your axe from the tent, feeling its familiar heft in your hand. You put on your belt, and stick the shaft of the axe through a loop. You leave again, and head to the bonfire.

The brothers around the fire greet you, and offer you some of their food. It appears you gained some notoriety, and rumors have sprung up that you stole into the center of a savage village to steal their chieftain's child, and that you were filled with the power of the Shaper of Blades, who banished the savages with the power of a song. That you cannot be killed by poison, and that you ran 100 miles carrying the child that day. Most don't actually believe the rumors, but new stories to tell are always welcome. Thanking them for the food and water, you make your way to where you heard the captain was, at the west wall.

You see many of the brothers sharpening stakes, planting them in the soft ground, or hauling wood. Yelling orders at the men is Captain Tyrin.

You approach the captain, and he sneers at you. "'Bout time ye woke up. Another day an' I woulda dumped ye en the sea, dead or not." He turned back to the work. "I suppose I should thank ye. That boy ye brought back's been a gold mine. Turns out there's a village of about 200 savages a couple miles to the Northeast. They know we're here, and they've been watchin' us and taking potshots when they can. Lost a few brothers to 'em." His eyes glaze over, and he seems sad.

He shakes off the sadness. "Well, yer awake now, and I suppose yev earned this." He reaches into his fur-lined cloak, and pulls out an ivory horn, patterned with scroll work. He hands it to you, a grin on his face. "Yer an officer now. Put a shirt on."

Get ourselves the armor and helmet I proposed earlier, for the sheer intimidation value we could cause in the savages.

You know, that's a very good question. I'm sort of surprised nobody's mentioned that yet. I suppose now would be a good time to decide on that.

Also, the horn is about the length of your index finger, and covered in intricate scrollwork. It is the emblem of a first rank officer, just above an average soldier.

This gives you command over an 8 man squad, and the power to give many of your brothers orders. You are still inexperienced, so it may be difficult to exercise your authority, but as long as your work to build respect, they shouldn't give you too much trouble.

You can get your hands on some decent armor and a helm, but none of them have horns on them. You could hire a smith to make some alterations, and you did recently come into possession of a horn...

You certainly could spend time training with the veterans, if that is the group's wish.

Get some armor during the timeskip, glue our horn to the helmet (if horns are used to show rank, we can stick the next one on later)
and spar so we can figure out how to hold an axe in one hand and a sword in the other.

Yes. We are in The Land of the Pissed Off Savage, and we're not much of a fighter. I suggest we train with the handaxe and the bow the most. Especially the bow.

On this: It's been well established that we're not the strongest. While we might become highly skilled, frankly I don't think we have the build to become the greatest of viking warriors.

We might be able to become the greatest of viking scouts, though. We're already fairly skilled in that field; I think we should aim to hone our skills at woodcraft until we are like a ghost in the trees, easily spot the most well-concealed of the savages' traps and ambushes, and can strike with swift and deadly silence.

    Your squad:
Tybir - One of the largest men in the war party. He isn't dumb, though people assume he is. The man has been known to break rocks with his bare hands.

Faen - Decent fighter, heavy drinker, and apprentice smith.

Borrejek - The man is an ass, but he's a deadly ass. He wields one of the few warhammers in the crew, and can shatter a shield in a single strike.

Stakti - He's quiet and a bit withdrawn, but he might be smarter than you. You really can't tell.

Bavari - He's not much of a fighter, he's not much of a thinker, but he's loyal to a fault.

Tevenan - He's a demon with a bastard sword, but he talks back, is insubordinate, and does not respect you.

Kaer - A veteran of many savageland campaigns, he is second in experience only to Skarvi. He is the only soldier who actually speaks the savage language.

It's basically whenever the person running the quest wants to run it. That said, many keep to a schedule of some kind- "every Sunday evening", "X time from now" at the end of the previous threat, "One of these days, around six board time", whatever. Something to let players know when and where to look.

Of course, a lot of them state schedules and then rampantly violate them, so go figure.
