    69 KB Sorcerer Quest IV VKO !qw2cdBTZAc 03/14/11(Mon)23:40 No.14245154
You are Melane Kiried, a sorceress. You have spent the last few days living as Alkenin Murejed, your distant ancestor, who was a powerful sorcerer in the Aldini kingdom, which was wiped out 300 years ago.

Your party, the Legacy of the Aldini, numbers 45, including you. Before the attack from Rufen Millan and his dragon ally, you numbered 56. You are on the way to see the Ripouse Confederacy, a conglomerate of a large number of the gnoll-like people's tribes, to see if their leader is in fact over 300 years old.

    It's a bit complicated.

You awaken in your private wagon, feeling well rested. The sun shines down on the cold plains, the tall grass swaying lazily in the face of your caravan.

    Roster:
    Tukon Reid, human duellist
    Cagrazod, Marteau (fire gargoyle) technologist/warrior
    ????
    ????
    ????

    28 humans (5 injured)
    11 gargoyles (1 injured)

    Important Possessions: Dominion's Memory

lolno. The Quest II description was written by one of the readers.

At any rate, your wagon is sprawled with comfortable cloth drapes and blankets, as it gets quite cold out on the planes. You have several chests full of your belongings around the wagon. Your memory is a bit fuzzy, but you remember that you have a large stock of Various Scrolls and one with your Enchanted Hair Ornaments. As well as being fashionable, the Ornaments have various effects on your magic and your appearance.

Your attendant is driving the wagon. He does not appear to notice that you have woken up.

    What will you do?

You have a variety of smaller ones at your disposal, but the big three you currently possess are as follows:

Crimson Spirals (Enhances fire-related magic, appearance)
Dragon Lady (Gives insight into dragon's weaknesses, adaptive energy resistance)
Lapis Lazuli Broach (Removes poison from the body, enhances endurance)

Which one would you like to wear?

    >>14246312

You remember the weeks of training you went through using old records to assume Alkenin's identity. You were the daughter of a rich upper-class family. You wanted to be an actress, but your skill as a spellcaster caused you to be sent to a mage's academy when you were very young. You joined a cult that promised to make things better. You and your company are all that remains of it.

What would you like to remember specifically?

    The broach. (Lapis Lazuli.)

Our want to be an actress probably helped us get in Alkenin's shoes immensely.

What do we remember about our current traveling companions?

    >>14246381

You put the Lapis Lazuli at the back of your hair. It was a broach at one point, but you modified it to be a hair ornament.

You feel the remnants of the poison purged from you. You feel a comfortable aura come over you. You change into your blue and gold feathered serpent-patterned gown.

    >>14246390

You still did some things as an actress, but nothing serious. Getting into the role would have been much harder. His memories were warded to be accessible only to him. He was a shrewd man.

Tukon tried warming up to you at first more intimately, but after a few rejections he decided he'd rather be your friend. He trained in a monastery when he was younger, and doesn't talk much about it. He is a skilled martialist, relying on whatever it takes to win a fight. He is a stalwart companion, and your barbs directed at him are mostly playful. Unless he starts hitting on you.

Cagrazod is an inventor who you met out on the plains with his compatriots. When you told him of your plans, he was taken aback, and pledged himself fully to your cause. Apparently, marteaux can be like that. He is a skilled warrior, and his inventions rely on a bit of magical energy.

The other companions... You know there's three more. They're on the tip of your tongue... But they're not budging. Maybe seeing them would help?
    >> Anonymous 03/15/11(Tue)03:00 No.14246509
Well, let's go an ask someone how close we are.

Also, quick question about summoning spells: Out feathered serpent had it's ass torn us pretty bad. Will we have to find a different one to summon eventually or is it some extraplanar being that heals while not called?

Your attendant looks back as you step out from behind your curtain.

"Ah, you're awake, ma'am! Are you hungry?"

You salivate a bit as he suggests food. "Gods yes. What do we have?"

He hands you back a wooden bowl filled with beef, bread and runny eggs. "Still warm, ma'am."

You consume the breakfast hungrily. You consider mentioning the consistency of the eggs for a moment, till you realize you enjoy them this way.

"If you have the time, ma'am, Tukon, Cagrazod and the wounded gargoyle would like to see you." Your attendant says. "Maybe taking a walk would help clear your head."

    >>14246509

Your feathered serpent is a creature you were bound to according to your auspice. As long as she is not killed on her home plane, she cannot truly die. She will have healed by now.

"How much farther till we reach the Confederacy?" You ask, stretching your tired limbs.

"A few hours I think. Should get there in the afternoon." Your attendant says.

You head over to the rear wagon, a wide platform on which a number of gargoyles are resting. Some are quietly chatting, eating the meager meals the creatures of stone need to live, while others are still asleep, in humorous or serious poses. Cagrazod is tweaking the instruments you saw attached to his wings earlier. You walk over. "Cagrazod, how goes your adjustments?"

He mimes wiping sweat off of his brow. "Well, the propellant mixture I'm using has been damaging these, ma'am. I'll have to be a bit more reserved."

You remember anything but this man being reserved. "Would you care to take a break? I'd like to talk to you, Tukon, and your wounded man."

He jumps off of the wagon, crashing steel resounding as he lands. He grins. "Perhaps it would do to boil off some frustration, my lady."

The two of you stride over to where Tukon is, chatting with his men while one practices his swordplay.

"No, the inner strength comes from these exercises, like I've been telling you. You don't have to stick needles anywhere."

His underling is pulling slender needles out of his own neck, a painful expression on his face. "I don't have time for such things, I need to be able to fight that great beast if it comes back!"

Tukon sighs, turning as he hears you approach. "Power doesn't come so quickly, right Melane?"

You nod. "I studied for years for my abilities, and Tukon years for his. If such things were so easy, would we all not be able to jump as high as him?"

The man picks the last needle out of his neck. "I suppose not, ma'am. I won't try anything like this again."

You smile. "Just work at your own pace. If the dragon comes again, I will not be indisposed."

Tukon walks over to you, following along behind. "The troops are doing foolish things like that. I hope there is good news waiting for us with the ripouse."

"I always say, both good and bad come with news." You gesture over to the medical wagon. "You just have to try and make good of what you find out."

"Besides, I have quite the news for them." You say with a grin as you slide the covering to the wagon out of your way.

You hear the groans of the wounded, seeing a number of burned comrades wrapped in bandages. An old man dressed in black robes with the symbol of Thunlin around his neck, a branching crystal. He bows his bald head as he sees you. "My lady, these men will live."

"The gargoyle asked for me." You say, inclining your head towards him. "I'm sorry, we are old friends, I can tell, but-"

He grins a bit. "Not to worry, my lady, I am not offended. Marred Khess is the name, priest of the Father of Magic." He points to a small corner with hanging cloth draped over it. "He is stable, though a bit distraught."

You head over to the gargoyle, who is sitting upright with his single hand clutching a spoon awkwardly, shaking in his grip. He lowers it as he sees you.

"It's alright." You say, and he inclines his head.

"Remember, Devran, speak only when spoken to." Cagrazod says to his underling. "I am sorry for the inconvenience my lady. He should not have asked for you without my permission."

Devran adjusts his seating, rolling up his pant leg as best he can with one arm.

"Devran! Displaying oneself to the lady in such a manner!" Cagrazod shouts.

"It is not vulgar, sir." He says, and you notice that the stone on his leg is engraved with swirling patterns and letters. He moves his left hand in a circular motion, and you can see that a similar design is on his arm. "These engravings... I had them done when I was much younger. They were a gift from my father." He looks up at you, shame in his expression. "It is most selfish, but they contain my family's history, and I do not know them well enough to have them copied when my new arm and leg grow in. Could we please look for them? It would mean a lot to me."

Tukon shrugs over to you. "It's your call. There are more important things."

Devran looks down, gritting his teeth. "I am aware, master Tukon. But this means a great deal to me." He looks you dead in the eyes. "I will do whatever you ask me to once I have healed, ma'am."

"Your loyalty should be assured already." Cagrazod says.

    >>14247029

"Very well. But do not fail what I ask you to do."

Devran nods, grasping at his right shoulder. "When I am whole again, I will be more wary of such spells. I do not wish to endure such pain again. Any children I raise shall be at your side as well."

"Great boasting can go to your head." Cagrazod says, fishing a potion out of one of his pockets. He hands it to Devran after uncorking it. "This will help you sleep, so hurry and regenerate for our lady."

He pours it into his meager meal, picking up the bowl and drinking it. "Yes, sir." He looks over at you and smiles. "Thank you, my lady. You make such sacrifice worth it." His clothing takes on a mineral sheen as he freezes like a statue in place.

Cagrazod bows his head to you. "If we must go back to Dominion's Grave, the site of the ambush is not far. I shall conduct the search if it would please my lady."

Tukon nods over to you. "So, anything else you need to ask us, your foggy-headedness?"

    Cagrazod shoots him a glare.

Tukon laughs a bit. "I imagine I'd have eaten a spell or two already for my mouth."

"...No reason why my lady can't change her policy." Cagrazod mutters.

"I just wanted to make sure you knew where our morale was at. That, and I wanted to see if you were feeling better." Tukon says, ignoring the marteau's musings.

"And, my lady, I wanted to inform you that the propellant can indeed be used for the dragon's breath weapons." Cagrazod says. "And to ask permission to acquire more components once we reach the confederation."

"Who's making selfish requests now, Cag?" Tukon laughs. "You just want to blow more things up."

"I assure you, my research is very near to a breakthrough." Cagrazod says. "And if my name is too long for you to remember, perhaps I should engrave it on your hand."

You excuse yourself, returning to your wagon. You write down the details of Alkenin's Dominion Spell. You know how to go about casting it, but there seems to be more to it. If Dominion itself was not dead, you would ask it. Its core rests in a small, warded chest.

You can read memory crystals easily, without any sort of preparation aside from meditation. Dominion's Memory is an exception. It can only be used by ones whose Chain of Life are close to the Chain possessed by the one attempting to read it. Alkenin's was especially secure. You doubt anyone else knew how to restrict access so.

You near the Ripouse camp, bright red flags waving atop great wooden poles. The hyena men crouch on their haunches at the edge of the camp, their armor leather treated with a dark resin, helmets drooping over their faces with ferocious teeth on the sides of the muzzle from various creatures, all beasts. They have long spears at the ready, some with a second head at the butt. Despite living in the wilderness, they remain well groomed and odorless, unlike the gnoll tribes you have seen before. One of the guards stops your wagon at the head before you enter the bustling commons.

"Miss Melane Kiried of the Legacy of the Aldini, it is good to see you again. May I ask what brings you back to us?" He asks, his tail twitching to one side.

"I have come seeking to speak with your patriarch. I have information he will find very interesting as well as a request for aid. He'll want to hear the first part at least." You say.

The guard chuckles, high pitched but quiet. "What makes you think he will talk to you this time?"

"Tell him I have information on Alkenin Murejed." You say to him.

He calls over one of his underlings, barking the orders to them. The ripouse salutes, his spearhand clenched over his heart, and strides off. The guard smiles at you, awkwardly. "Please enter."

You pass through a horde of activity, ripouse children running alongside the horses, laughing in their strange high pitched way. Adults practice in an oragnized circle, parrying spear thrusts and circling, teeth bared and clad in armored skirting. Colorful dyes and clothes line the way, and you hear a few of the shopkeepers try to usher you over as you pass.

You guide the wagon along to its place near the other travelers. You see a few faces from the last time you were here. Hygald, the fat trader who has been stocking up on furs, the Company of the Black Hydra, adventurers who have been healing up with these people, and of course Gherrh, the ripouse guard captain who is in charge of security. He is muscular, with his orange mane-like hair braided and a stalwart stance despite a cruel scar down the outside of his right thigh, visible past the armor plating. He stands at attention as you approach.

"Miss Kiried." He says with a thick, growling accent. "I rrremind you, yourr companions arre to act well in ourr camp."

"I assure you, they will be on their best behavior." You say, smiling despite the insinuation.

The ripouse glares down at you. "They had betterr be."

You wander off into the commons, hearing the flute being played by an old shaman clad in faded leathers surrounded by a small group of followers. He looks over at you with sad, ancient eyes.

A ripouse with a red headband tied across his small brow rushes over to you, panting a bit. "Miss Kiried, our patriarch will see you immediately." He gestures back behind him. "I will lead you."

You follow, passing through great tents filled with guards. You head down a ramp into the ground, past five ripouse clad in different tribal dress, each armed and scarred from many battles. They look at you with suspicion, but none move to stop you.

You enter a dark room deep in the earth, behind a great iron door. There you can see shadowy tapestries hanging from the walls, somehow familiar. Two guards stand at your flank, each looking down his nose at you.

"Leave us." A voice says from the darkness, soft yet cracked with age. You can make out a seated figure, though you cannot tell much about him.

The guards hesitate, then leave, closing the door but not locking it.

"Tell me, what do you know of Alkenin Murejed?" The voice says, his eyes lit like twin coals.

"I have lived a few days as him." You say, striding a bit closer. "I have felt as he did, remembered his deeds." You gesture out into the darkness. "And I learned quite a few things."

"I am his blood descendant, for one.
Secondly, I know he had a favored servant named Algers, whom he considered to almost be his son.
And third, the epiphany that brought me back here, that after Alkenin's home had been invaded by another wizard, Algers lost one of his legs and was subsequently given only the second fully-functioning prosthetic leg attachment ever attempted on a living being. Alkenin himself crafted the leg."

"Oh?" The voice says, a fireball blazing up on either side of the eyes, illuminating the room. Sitting in an earthen throne is an aged ripouse, fur tipped with gray, his green eyes algeam like he was a much younger man. He wears bands of iron across his wrists, with the heads of jackals bound to their tails clearly visible. His tunic is several layers of dyed leather in vibrant red and faded green, with white fur from ermines accenting the collar and edges of the high sleeves. A necklace with a vibrant orange gem hangs from his neck by a leather cord, decorated with vibrant feathers from rare birds. His skirting goes down to about mid-thigh, and his left leg is clearly plated over with a dim metal, small bands of leather across each calf. He taps his metal foot on the ground, his lips parting in a grin.

"Then, does that same Algers not sit here before you?" He asks, knocking on his left leg with his hand, a cackle issuing forth from him.

"I had thought so. It feels strange seeing you in the flesh. I was jostled from the memory so suddenly, part of me even now still thinks it's Alkenin. That part is wondering how that first walk went."

"His son though... You exaggerate." He says, leaning back in his chair. "We were dear friends. My master was quite generous to me. But he would not have though such a thing."

You start to speak, but he raises a hand.

"You have obviously gone through quite a deal, finding me after my children have elected to keep me hidden." He giggles a bit. "They think I've grown feeble in my old age. Never let me do anything." Algers conjures a flame on one fingertip, and it dances across his hand, never burning him. "But if what you say is true, I would have to serve you. Such is my way." He crushes the flame. "However, I am no fool. You speak of forgotten things from a very long time ago. You say you lived as my master. I am no stranger to the unusual." He swings his right leg up, resting his ankle on his metal knee. "However, I find this hard to believe. Have you any proof?" He grins defiantly.

"I had thought it was you." You say, pausing as you feel an odd sadness in your chest. "It feels strange seeing you in the flesh. I was jostled from the memory so suddenly, part of me even now still thinks it's Alkenin. That part is wondering how that first walk went."

Algers' face shatters, his jaw dropping a bit as he leans forward, putting his good foot on the ground. "What was that?"

"The walk you and he had. After you got your leg." You say.

He looks down at his leg, and is quiet for a bit.

"We talked. I tried my best to hobble along. He looked concerned for the first time in years." He pauses, the flames near him flickering a bit. "I was happy. Happy to be alive. Happy that I would not live my life on a crutch. Happy that I was useful to him."

"He didn't tell you." You say.

Algers stands up, his leg creaking a bit as he rises. "How can you know?" He wonders, quietly. "He never would have made a note of it. I don't know how, but you were there." He raises up his metal leg, flexing the knee, and you hear the joints creak a bit. "It was the beginning of my life, almost. A rebirth." He grins over to you warmly.

"He thought of you as a son." You say, quietly.

Algers smiles, a sound almost like a whimper coming from his mouth as his lip shakes. Tears form in his eyes, and he stands, fists clenched, sobbing in the midst of the room.

"To think that my master..." He starts, his lip quivering a bit before he cries, silent sobbing, his shoulders quaking as his tears stain the dirt floor.

"Oh gods..." He puts a hand up to his eyes, wiping them. "How can I cry over something so long ago?"

"I think it's just as sad as if you were to have known then." You say, smiling gently.

"I am sorry, Mistress." He says, chuckling a bit. "I am crying in front of you, and I do not even know your name. I must seem like quite the awful leader."

"Melane Kiried." You say, smiling at him. "We have much to discuss."

"Kiried..." Algers says, sniffling a bit. "Mistress, when you... were in my master's memories, did you by chance hear the name

    Darane Kiried?"

That's it for now, anon. We will begin at around 21:00 board time on wednesday later this week. Gargoyle quest will be on then too, provided 4 chan doesn't begin shitting itself again.

Until then, look to the horizon in search of tomorrow!
