A stone shattering explosion and a massive plume of dust herald your arrival. The fortress around you buckles and shakes, raw magic ripping through defenses and walls alike. The screams of the inhabitants only start to drown out the groans of tortured stone when your minions find their feet, and charge down the various dust-filled corridors with savage battlecries. You follow behind, hearing the terrified cries of the inhabitants of the structure you invade.

As the Binder's crystal informed you, there are several demons bound in the walls of the rocky warren, and they attack you with alacrity as your assault breaks their binding circles and they are freed. Scinnari proves an able bodyguard, blindsiding and cutting two down as they approach, and engaging another in combat. You are still forced to act yourself, incinerating a hezrou before the lumbering monstrosity can close with your central group. The odor is abominable, but thankfully easily dispersed, with a gust of summoned wind. As is the dust- You see the corridors ahead, and your forces splitting up, heading for objectives you gave them beforehand. You proceed for the one you left for yourself: The summoning halls.

They are heavily warded, naturally, even with the departure of Vale's work. They are, however, still quite susceptible to damage- the release of so many bound demons has drained power from the enchantments, and you easily shred them before you. That has the side effect of releasing what demons remain... something you are not entirely against. You pause to watch as the freed demons rip into their former masters, and join Scinnari in cutting down the few who head your way. You do intervene, though, when it looks like one of them is regaining control. Specifically, you banish them all with a use from a wand you brought, and close in on the warlock himself. Bereft of his servants, he is much less threatening, and easily made short work of.

Reports filter back more rapidly than you expected; traps, resistance, and the folding thereof. Summoners are rarely threatening on their own, and stay that way, if you have the equipment or ability to prevent them from practicing their art. You considered it wise to make sure your minions were duly prepared, and it seems to have paid off- light to moderate casualties, and the entire fortress secured within an hour... You will have to reward someone, you decide.

“Victory seems complete.” Scinnari says, and you can detect excitement in her voice. Understandable; you feel the rush of combat too, but prefer to keep it out of your voice.

“Very well. Search the structure, remove... all valuables, and we can depart these... god forsaken halls.” you agree, issuing orders to your other lieutenants. They nod and hurry to relay your commands to their underlings...

“...a few dozen copies of various demonic... -and infernal- texts...” Scinnari lists off, “A few hundred books in total. Various... baubles and trinkets... Various magical devices, several sizable spellbooks... An exquisite scroll collection... Two tapestries in any degree of salvageable. The demons seem to have taken an... unholy pleasure in their destruction, for some reason.” The entire list is quite satisfying, and more than makes up for expenditures in the operation, even with generous rewards distributed to your minions. “A castle I have tentatively identified as Akuzanti, and a rather fierce naval battle, respectively. The latter requires some repair.”

“Details... Have it taken care of.” you order leisurely. Scinnari nods, making note of your command, and you continue. “However, dear Scinnari, the primary benefit of this action will not be found on that list...”

“I... It... is satisfying, lord.” she replies haltingly, looking down. “It... isn't quite what I expected... but I am pleased, nevertheless. They were something that... was necessary to remove from the world-”

“I assure you, I did not do this for the world.” you interject, and she smiles.

“Of course, my lord. I am grateful, I am pleased that it is done. I... Apologize for troubling you with... with my past.”

    “Dat woman.” indeed...
    #############

“Trouble or not, for you, I felt it worthwhile. Your service and my fondness for you both make it deserved. But I am troubled that you did not find it as satisfying as you had hoped; do you believe you can tell me why?”

“It... I do not know.” Scinnari says, and you can detect the mix of her thoughts. “It... brings me less pleasure than I had hoped, but perhaps more than I had expected. Either way, I... feel I should have more important things to attend to...” Sensing at her thoughts, the telepathic equivalent of being an expert at reading facial expressions, your are satisfied to witness a few images flash across her mind- Azyra, you, Mza... Cygnariassis. The thoughts are rapid, fleeting, and only vaguely formed, but odd, nonetheless. You consider guessing, but settle for asking, instead.

    “Cygnariassis?”

“I... must confess, that is revenge less... personally significant, but perhaps more satisfying.” Scinnari says. “I am less than fond of her. I still recall our first meeting... And she can no longer... ignore me, I think.”

“Nor keep suggesting that I... supplant you, as the object of my affection.” you add, encouraging her. “Still. There was another matter I promised you satisfaction in. If you still want to pursue it?”

“I... can't say that I do, my lord.” Scinnari say after a sizable pause. “I... feel it would only bring me the same sense of... underwhelming satisfaction this has. Perhaps even less.” She pauses, and you almost reply before she continues. “I believe... My attention would be more... profitably... focused on aiding you, ou- your empire, and our daughter.”

I'm not sure if she's having second thoughts because she loves her old flame still, or if she's actually more interested in us. That's something to worry about later, though. Might as well enjoy the time we have now, while sending agents to infiltrate the order as we've discussed before- if we change our mind later we can take it out.

If we mess with Cygnis, make sure that we keep STRICTLY to our plans to break her. That means no kindness, no compromise, no ridiculously detailed mindfuck plans- just rely on abuse, ignoring her, and the enchantments that we've already put into place.

On Azyra... can we investigate her spellcasting abilities? On one side of her family she has natural sorcery, and on the other she's got ridiculously awesome powers like at-will teleportation and charm monster. Both sides can polymorph (or alternate form to shrink wings). If she doesn't have at least SOME very useful magic, I'd be vaguely confused. It might manifest later, I suppose, but still.

Aside from that... hrm. Let her accompany us as we give orders and/or Scinnari as she carries out tasks so that she gets to learn by observation, I suppose, and try to teach her lessons as we go. Not all family time is playtime: Azaladon is a serious dragon who takes work seriously and will fill his daughter's upbringing with useful information and life lessons.

“All worthy goals, in my not-terribly-humble opinion.” you agree. “And it makes me happy to hear you say that. Very well... Cygnariassis, you say? So shall it be done. Let us attend to this... 'guest' of ours.” Her delighted laughter mingles with your dry chuckle as you walk through your entrance-hall, towards your lair.

Cygnariassis is awake when you arrive, and still defiantly avoiding the gold-dragon-hide dress you left her. Thrown defiantly beyond her reach, at some point. As she has been the others times you've visited her, she looks utterly dejected, and it absently staring at the bands on her arms. Undoubtedly reading the draconic markings on them, turning the words over in her mind... You savor the thought.

“You seem to have... misplaced... something.” Scinnari says, retrieving the dress and carrying it back within Cygnariassis' reach. “I'm sure it's been... in your thoughts.” Cygnariassis looks up, then retreats from Scinnari, a twisted mockery of someone warding off a devil with a holy symbol. When she reaches the end of her chain and can no longer retreat, she attempts to turn, but cannot evade the brandished dress. Cygnariassis spasms slightly when it touches her, and she lingers before eventually pulling away.

“Don't you miss your brother? From what I recall, he was all too eager to be... close to you...” Scinnari mocks, obviously enjoying herself. Cygnariassis, finally cornered, straightens in defiance, and to Scinnari's apparent surprise, snatches the dress from her taunting hand.

“Fine!” Cygnariassis shouts, “I /will/ take this... /wear/ this. Not because of you or whatever cruel enchantments you have placed on this- Because he was my brother. And if anyone is to hold this, it certainly should not be /you/, devil.”

“Are you sure?” Scinnari asks quietly, recovering quickly. “Are you certain? Is /that/ why you accept it... or perhaps because you desire the feel of those... 'cruel' enchantments.” You trigger a suggestion spell of moderate strength, silently assisting Scinnari. Cygnariassis' eyes do flash down to the dress in her hands, and to the bands around her wrists, but return to Scinnari still defiant. “Likewise... Are you so sure you should be unhappy with this... arrangement?” Scinnari purrs, stalking around Cygnariassis. “You seem to enjoy yourself... And you certainly made every effort to make this possible... My lord Azaladon owes it to you above any other, that this has come to pass.”

“Ah... Indeed.” you agree. “After all, who will come? You were kind enough to inform what few acquaintances you had that you would be departing with your friend, and would not return for some time.” You cock your head as you pace, reciting. “You assured them that you were... in able company. You allowed me to put you... in a far more fitting position than you were in Freeport.” You halt, and pick a single jewel from your hoard, no mean feat considering the disparity between it and your claws. “And, of course, you have given me a lovely addition to my hoard... yourself included.”

“Those were mine, thief!” Cygnariassis shouts, enraged. You only laugh.

“And now they are mine... really, 'thief'? That is my most heinous crime?” you ask incredulously. “I was merely trying to convince you... but it seems you have convinced me. Your really /did/ want this...” Another, stronger, suggestion bends her mind, forcing her to consider the otherwise repulsive option.

“It really does make sense, doesn't it?” Scinnari agrees, delighted. “Those... Nightmares... you told Azaladon about... Being a prisoner bound, and where he would never come to rescue you... You did not fear being captured, being held, imprisoned...” you pick up on her train of thought quickly, and complete it for her.

“You merely feared that you would not be... 'Prisoner' is a strong word; I think perhaps 'possession' would be better suited. Afraid,” you continue seamlessly, “That you would not be /my/ possession. And look where you are now... I've done the kindest thing to you. Certainly more than you deserve.”

“You have a list of faults and flaws that beggars belief.” Scinnari agrees, and you almost feel sorry for Cygnariassis; between all the crippling enchantments from her shackles, she's left not only actually contemplating your words, but unable to formulate a reply. That she should still be wracked with guilt doesn't help either... or, arguably, does.

Leaving her to whatever solace she can find in the dress, you erect an illusory wall between her and you, and stretch languidly before lying down on your hoard. Recently expanded, and quite massive hoard...

    “About Azyra's birthday...” you begin.

“I have a few... ideas.” Scinnari answers, “A preliminary list of invitations... We probably can't expect actual attendance of foreign rulers- at least, any worthy of the title, but it could be used as a... gathering for your empire, not to mention being a gesture and statement to whatever neighbors are invited... For the most part, I think we shall have to settle for ambassadors. The United Cities, Tashz, Rhasver... Freeport perhaps. And lesser states. Do you... Intend to invite Seffestranias?” Scinnari asks, and you note her delicate tone with mild irritation.

“Perhaps.” you reply neutrally, adding an unspoken, “Why?”.

“I... No real reason, my lord, I shall try to.. curb my personal opinions. In this regard at least. Judging by your previous... exchange with her, I believe she would be willing to attend, should you invite her. And... It could be wise.” Scinnari says. “Regardless.... We have suitable housing for guests in Mza, though your castle would suffice, if necessary. The real preparations that would need to be made would be... Board, and entertainment, primarily. At some point during the minbreak process, raping her would probably be useful. Particularly if we can make her enjoy it a great deal in spite of the fact that she desperately doesn't want to; that would serve to reinforce our ongoing argument that her subconscious wanted this fate even if she claims otherwise.

But that's probably a bit down the line yet.

Seffy: Of course we invite her. We should also refer to her by her proper name at all times in-character. I have no objection to sleeping with her casually, as long as we don't make it a habitual thing; at this point we have made clear to Scinnari that we intend to take other lovers on occasion and she's expected to stick with us through it and know that she'll stay at the top of the hoard.

As for making Azyra's birthday special... hrm. We'll need to throw a damned good party, primarily. I hesitate to say "spare no expense", but spare little enough expense that others will be surprised at how good it is. Hire very good entertainers, exotic and tasty food with excellent cooks, all that stuff.

    Idea!

Invite Lessana AND her grandfather, the old sultan of Tashz. He will come, because:

    1. He loves his granddaughter and probably would like to speak with her.
    2. He owes us for keeping her safe.
    3. It's gonna be a hell of a party.

    And we will benefit because:
    1. He will see we have given his granddaughter a powerful position in our kingdom and might drop extra boons for us because of it.
    2. He will be an amazingly famous person attending, increasing our prestige.
    3. We can stand and greet him like he did for us at his grandson's rise to power, displaying the firm ties between Tashz and Mza in front of all the assembled diplomats.

Also, we should prepare a large list of gifts like Tashz did at their succession, and make ours opulent and a wonderful place to be. Next time we host a party we too will attract foreign dignitaries of stature who want to be there for the pampering and gifts.

Speaking of gifts, have a bunch of them prepared and held by servants out of sight. We have a specific gesture for gifts of certain value, so when we are presented with one we can return a gift of consummate value.

“The term 'spare no expense' comes to mind. Albeit painfully.” you reply. “As for Seffestranias... 'Seffy',” you say, quoting the nickname you'd heard some of her populace use, “I can hardly avoid inviting every other beautiful female ruler or representative. Besides; she is... sadly aware of me, and would possibly take it as a personal insult, were she not invited.”

“You are right, of course, my lord.” Scinnari says, bowing her head. “Again, I apologize for my... bias.”

“I understand.” you reply. “But as for Azyra's... announcement, I believe we should have a reception... That encourages further attendance.”

“Generosity?” Scinnari asks with mock incredulity.

“From a Red dragon.” you reply deadpan. “It hurts less if I think of it as an investment in reputation. And anyway, Azyra is, after all, worth it.”

“Of course... With your permission, I can see to most of it.” Scinnari offers. You nod.

“Very good. I have... other matters that also merit attention, should you desire to join me later.”

“Of course, my lord.” Scinnari replies pleasantly, “I wouldn't miss it. Is that all?” She bows slightly, then straightens, staring up at you. It occurs to you that she might have entirely different ideas on what you want her company for than you do, but you allow her to keep them; you don't want to specify so close to Cygnariassis.

“Indeed. I shall await your company, then.” you reply, and she departs.

“Ah, so kind of you to return.” you reply, getting up to meet Scinnari as she appears. She looks at you questioningly, and you smile enigmatically, wordlessly guiding her back out the way she came. Once you are out of the entrance hall, you polymorph and lead her towards what passes for your study in the warren of caves and traps.

“I have set scribes copying and sending invitations... Begun initial preparations...” Scinnari offers, looking at you curiously. “Things are in motion; no going back now. Ah... About Tashz; did you want to contact the current sultan, or his grandfather specifically? And what is the matter?”

“Hmm... Both, I think, though I should probably think on that. And... more information on the Binder.” you say aloud, pulling out a map. “Specifically, some of the researches I've had on payroll have finally had palpable success.. Specifically... The region known as Rhasver seems to have been the... 'duchy' of Twice-Bound. The far north... ostensibly holds the resting place of Soulless, assuming that the Binder was not attempting to mislead me. Soulless seems the type to associate with ice and snow... even if it is no longer a 'he' or 'she', by all accounts.”

Scinnari doesn't interrupt, but merely points to another marking on the map.

“Indeed. Research into Tashzmir legend suggests that the ancient Black that was driven out by an ancient Blue of some form. Evidence suggests that the Black may have been... a younger, and perhaps more lively version of the Dead One, whom I believe we encountered in Freeport. I would assume whoever supplanted him was another of the Bound, or shortly became one, afterwards. However, the one I was actually looking for... Lorekeeper... May have been located.”

“Really, lord?” Scinnari asks, sounding quite interested herself.

“Indeed. The Ivory Gate, the two white stone... edificies on either side of the Tashz/Urgash sea, near the mouth. I believe, currently, they are both inhabited by... 'free and allied' Avariel city-states. The passage is, ostensibly, theirs, at least the mouth of it is. They are also, again, ostensibly, removed from the troubles of Tashz and Rhasver. “

“And... You believe Lorekeeper resided... Or resides among these avariel?” Scinnari asks, inspecting the map. The Ivory Gate is a significant enough landmark that the mapmaker included a crude and off-scale representation of them on the map.

“No. Bewteen... Above, rather, the two mounts is a semi-permanent cloudbank. Adventurers report it being inhabited by... Cloud giants. A fortress of their kind, a grand redoubt among- Above... the clouds. Upon them, perhaps. Recently, however... a band of adventurers made it back, mostly in one piece from there. They report it being a rather sprawling and oversized fortress, even for giants. One of them, a wizard, after getting drunk, was persuaded to sketch the symbol of the cloud giants used as their emblem. He swears up and down that it is Lorekeeper's palace, or at least what passed for that among the Bound.”

The Avariel are the reclusive and xenophobic kind, and are reputed to dwell in cities upon the 'gates', or possibly in caves /in/ the mounts. (Again with the xenophobic bit.)

Tend to excise a very small but utterly consistent tithe from all passage through the 'Gate.

Also, regarding location, if you may assume for teh purpose of locating this Ivory Gate, Tashz is like Africa, Urgash is like Saudi-Arabia. Ivory gates are the (carrying the analogy further,) northern entrance to the Suez canal. (Though a few dozen miles wide.)

Members of your cabal are sent to infiltrate the Avariel, adequately protected, disguised, and equipped to escape, should they need to. The depart with your blessings and urgings for caution. You don't think this a terribly hazardous use of them, and a good learning experience, even if no violence is intended. They should have plenty of time to do their job, too; your attention will be held until after the reception.

Azyra's first actually isn't, since to the outside world, it's being calculated since Scinnari stopped carrying. More like her .75, really. And, arguably, you'd say that she really will be a year old by then; she was certainly as intelligent as human newborns in the egg. You do, however, admit that you might be biased.

Azyra herself is rather nervous about the idea of a party. She doesn't say as much, but does waver between eagerly asking you about who will attend, what she will receive, and uncertainly asking about who will attend, what she will have to do, and how important this is.

Either way, though invitations are sent, and preparations are being made- The ordering of luxury items, foods, and quality services, from chefs and stewards to bards, on a grand scale. Invitations are also sent to the local powers; Guild masters, Dock officials, Head clerics of several deities, and other individuals of import.

Responses, naturally, arrive before the guests do. Rhasver as a nation is still rather cautious regarding, as dwarves have long memories. Both messages sent to Tashz are rapidly replied to; the sultan declaring himself, to his great regret, unavoidably busy. An ambassador will attend, though. The other is a message of thanks from the Sultan's grandfather, saying that he isn't certain he can make it, but will attempt to make himself the emissary. Overall somewhat disappointing, compared to what you expected, but perhaps he is just trying to conceal his power.

The United Cities respond (your spies inform you,) by empowering several trade negotiators already in Mza to represent them. They are sadly unable to determine precisely what instructions were given, but the individuals are deemed by their home states to be “Upright, polite, and, to a reasonable extent, honest with the law.”. Halflings, you suppose.

    Lady Issa is invited to the capital, as are her pick of her sector governors. Though you claim and expect absolute loyalty from and power over those beneath you, you have allowed her to organize your mainland holdings as she wants; so far, she's proven quite good at it. They will attend, and you are inclined not to prepare any gifts for them;

Freeport has declined to send any ambassador- Disappointing, but not terribly surprising. Cygnariassis spitefully brags that it is her doing; she long ago set things in motion to chill relations between Freeport and the Sorcerer-King. Her defiance short-lived, though, as you calmly point out how incompetently she did it, and how her only even marginal success came, apparently, on accident... ignoring, of course, her secret desire to end up as she is now. That she seems to have been quite adept at, as if she was subconsciously focusing all her efforts towards that one end... Like previous times, you leave satisfied, thinking the doubt and pain in her eyes to have been slightly more intense than previously.

Seffestranias happily accepts an invitation, and promises to attend... perhaps merely as a representative of her realm. You take that to mean that she may attend in a humanoid form, and vaguely wish she wouldn't; Though she seems entirely capable of taking care of herself, it would be most awkward if an assassin followed her here and injured (or even killed) her on Mza proper.

The invitation sent to the city-state of Morinth returns, and you are nonplussed. A singled representative will attend, not the Magister of the city, but a moderately important guild representative. You were actively worried about including Morinth on the invitation list, as you considered it the most likely to leap to vaguely accurate conclusions about Azyra. Still, one member can't be terrible, though you may have to keep an eye on the representative, once she returns.

The remaining attendants are minor nobility, representatives of the princes and kings of the shattered Angevin states, mostly bordering your holdings. Ostensibly peaceable, they are, however, rather paranoid (with fairly good reason) that your expansion will continue in their direction should they show a moment of weakness. Will Rhasver may be chilly, these seem most likely to be out right hostile.

While we have allowed Lassana to organize our continental holdings as she chooses, I do hope we have been keeping a CLOSE eye on her, yes? Right, maybe we can get together with Scinnari on that. But an elite adamantine-equipped bodyguard that lets her go into the city sounds less like a 'gift' and more like a standard perk of being who she is.

Mithril I think. Lighter and prettier, adamantine is like steel, although valuable. And perhaps we should go with something that offers her a bunch of at-wills, until she actually develops some powers of her own? She can't cast anything yet, so this would allow her to until she gains the caster levels. At-will teleport, 1-3x a day, at will fireball, 2x a day, flight... maybe not, as that might discourage her from learning to use those wings of hers, and perhaps a heal or contingency, just in case?

We can always (in fact, we may have to) give her a new and more-appropriate one once she comes of age, or whatever. And like I said, +100% of .1 is just .2. Her natural abilities don't seem to be shit at the moment, so a +3 would be better than a x2 or x3.

Ooh! Let's give her a nightmare pony! Everyone loves ponies!

Same guy, how about a Griffon? Loyal, intelligent, trainable.

    Attack: Bite +11 melee (2d6+4)
    Full Attack: Bite +11 melee (2d6+4) and 2 claws +8 melee (1d4+2)

    Description:
Griffons are powerful, majestic creatures with the characteristics of both lions and eagles. From nose to tail, an adult griffon can measure as much as 8 feet. Neither males nor females are endowed with a mane. A pair of broad, golden wings emerge from the creature’s back and span 25 feet or more. A griffon weighs about 500 pounds.

A griffon cannot speak, but understands Common.

How about no? We're not giving her a pet or anything for her first birthday.

And the whole point of the item is that it will be something she keeps forever, a true keepsake and unique powerful thing with all that meaning and symbolism and stuff behind it. Sure, she might not be able to cast YET, but in 100 years she's going to be much happier to have a crown that makes her able to levitate mountains than at-will fireball.

And to be honest, I'm kind of leery of giving her a pet. Not only could it possibly kill her, but it would depend on her being... perhaps more mature than she sounds? I don't know.

Oh man, you probably didn't have a pet that was your own growing up. It's not just an animal, it's a companion and a way to teach responsibility very early on.

I still advocate a baby griffon as a pet. But I don't mind us giving her jewelry as well. We are a red dragon, and our kind has a special bond with our hoard.

Preliminary reception goes rather well. The Morinthian ambassador is a human female, shorter, but still quite good looking. Her voice sounds like it's more used to summoning outsiders or issuing orders than being polite. She manages passably, though, and seems, aside form being used to being in command, to be a relatively well-mannered guest. You have a slight suspicion that she doesn't like you, for one reason or another, but you can't pick up any motivation or solid basis for the feeling, and so ignore it.

The ambassador sent from Tashz arrives almost a week before any others, and reveals, in a private conference he requested with you, that he is Sultan's grandfather. Quite an old man, but willing to travel the distance. You direct him to Lady Issa, and after a few days meet with him again. He seems quite satisfied with Lessana's treatment, and thanks you for indulging 'the whim of an old man'. He's obviously aware that you are not doing this out of the goodness of your heart, though, and has brought negotiation missives from half a dozen of the major Tashzmir guilds, and his stay looks to be quite profitable to you.

The trio from the United Cities are really glorified merchants, official though they may have been made. They are eager to avail themselves of the extravagant lodgings and services you provide your guests, and exceedingly polite in meeting, but otherwise not terribly productive. Likewise the principalities from around your Angevin territories are exceedingly polite, but otherwise merely observing dignitaries.

Even lesser noble children had badges of station like circlets in the middle ages. Hell, they still do in some places. Just because you live in a modern first world country doesn't mean it's a horrible idea and she needs some cuddly fluffy pet that she would be more likely to pawn off to servants to take care of than raise herself.

Like it or not, high royalty ARE different than you. They have servants from before they can walk (some before they are even born) and learn command and responsibility at an early age because they CAN command said servants.

Although I acknowledge your personal preference here, I'm not sure I can stand by your logic here.

The current Queen of Wales in England is a huge fan of Welsh Corgis and there are numerous examples of princes and kings having favorite hunting dogs and the like.

They may have badges of station and are used to command, but being in a charged political environment lends to appreciating the mostly unquestioning loyalty of simpler animal minds. It's actually quite heart warming to see an pet become animated with excitement as soon as it spots you.

“Guildsmaster McAstry, Mza merchants' guild. Admiral Callis, commander of Mza Naval forces. Commander Basdan, commander of the city guard. Sector governor Nandez. Sector Governor Atlian...” The herald introducing guests continues with his list. Least to greatest. The lesser guests merely bow in acknowledgment, though the herald knows to give foreign dignitaries their full string of titles, as opposed to their rank, and time to responds, should they desire. You tune out momentarily, and contact Azyra telepathically, who is currently watching the proceedings from the next room, via a scrying spell you set up for her. Scinnari, 'Lady Katya', sits at your side, and, you suspect, is in current conversation with Azyra.

“This is... boring.” you overhear Azyra complain to Scinnari, sounding slightly nervous. “How long do I have to wait?”

“Twenty, twenty five minutes.” you guess, and glancing over the attendance. Seffestranias... promised attendance, but has not arrived yet. Spies report that she's busy dealing with a minor revolt, so it's possible she has decided she cannot make it. There are, however, dozens of foreign dignitaries regardless.

“Do remember, though.” Scinnari adds, “This is /your/ event; you don't even need to acknowledge criticism or other... negative comments. This is your birthday; they will be surprised to see you, as what you are, but will not dare to voice their surprise. If they do, ignore them, and we shall... attend to matters.”

“With alacrity.” you agree. The conversation continues, but is merely Scinnari rehashing the instructions she's had Azyra practicing, so you see no need to participate. A baker's dozen of odd representatives, some of Mza, then minor foreigners. You keep paying attention to the telepathic dialogue between Scinnari and your daughter as the go by, offering gestures of acknowledgment when the become necessary.

“Commander Cedasran Pologoi, Rhasveran Imperial Army, and Imperial Ambassador.”

“Present and grateful, your lordship.” the dwarf replies, standing just long enough to deliver a half-bow.

“Ambassadors Tilden, Tomas, and Westen, United Cities representatives.”

“Thank you for the honor, your lordship.” The trio answer with a bow each and three replies of essentially identical nature.

“Emissary Ozzias Mazran, ambassador of Tashz.” The disguised Tashzmir royalty stands, bowing.

“My pleasure to attend to your family, most honorable king.” he replies in accented common. Affected for his disguise, you know. He too sits shortly, though being the last... The proceedings are interrupted by the sound of approaching wingbeats, and those less familiar with the sound glance about in confusion. Shouts are audible outside, and a titanic blur of red descends on the courtyard. It disappears out sight, though of some of the dignitaries actually do scream. Your herald proves quite competent, though, and recovers instantly.

“And, ah, late arrival, her honor Seffestranias the Red, Queen of Beren and... vassal states.” he adds. His introduction coincides neatly with the recognizable humanoid form of Seffestranias passing through the double doors, entering the room. Dressed in all red, naturally. Evidently quite skilled at rapid landings and polymorphing, too.

“An honor... Lord Prestor.” she replies, “I apologize, if I am terribly late.”

“I hear you were unavoidably detained, and can understand.” you reply, though you allow a hint of irritation to enter your voice. “Very well. Again, I greet each of you, and thank you for attending my daughter's birthday and heir's confirmation.” you announce. Scinnari, to your right, says similar lines. You contact Azyra telepathically.

“Soon, Azyra. Get ready. Stand near the curtain. Be bold. Proud. Arrogant. You are my daughter, and I will accept no word against you.” you assure her. “Now.”

“And now, the focus of this event... Azyra Prestor, daughter of Katya and Varian Prestor.” There is dead silence as Azyra makes her way forward, wings folded, wearing an elaborate, if, obviously, small dress. She approaches silently, and stands between the two of you, slightly to the front.

“Azyra Prestor, Princess of Mza, and my daughter.” you confirm. She bows her head in acknowledgment as rehearsed. “I name you my daughter and heir. Rise and take your place beside your mother and I.” She does so, without comment, and a few seconds pass as you detecting her rising panic. You mentally reassure her, and are saved when Seffestranias and 'Ambassador Ozzias' begin to clap quietly. Almost surprised, the rest of those in attendance join in, and it becomes a sizable, if rather startled, applause. You stand, and at Scinnari's prompting, Azyra bows.

The herald turns to the audience at the signal, and initiates the party.

    “Let festivities and reception commence.”

Make sure if anybody asks about Azyra's appearance, that we just note that we're descended from extremely powerful draconic bloodlines (true, explaining some of the appearance) and add irritation to our voice, since "Varian and Katya" have tried often to have a child and usually failed, so any oddity in Azyra's appearance is brushed aside. With a veiled threat for good measure.

Also, can we get a True Seeing spell or similar active in this place? It'll let us see through disguises and similar.

The guests rise, and there seems to be a stark horror, or at least utter bewilderment at Azyra's appearance and a general nervousness, especially amongst those in front. Expecting someone to go forward and treat with you before they all break off to collect their wits. They are saved when Seffestranias steps forward. Ranks immediately melt as they flee to collect themselves, location of choice being around the refreshment tables. A susurrus of whispered conversation immediately kindles, and does not diminish.

“Ah... Lady- Princess... Azyra. I greet you and must... compliment you on leaning towards the more... majestic parts of your ancestry. My gifts are twofold; A... token, should you ever desire a favor, of my kingdom or myself...” Seffestranias produces a small amulet, with a fair amount of magic on it. “Do not put it on yet, I'm sure you father will desire to... inspect it.” Seffestranias cautions, “Unnecessary, but expected, in this case. Either way, merely possessing it will have you treated as a most important guest. And... You may perhaps find this of use.”

'This' is a longsword of exquisite construction, not terrifically adorned, but masterfully made. It is also heavily enchanted, and looking to be some alloy of adamantine or mithril. Perhaps both, though you've never heard of one. Either way, it fits Seffestranias' form, and is almost comically huge for Azyra. Despite this, though, the moment Azyra touches it, it shrinks, contracting down past shortsword length, and also shrinking in terms of scale. By the time it's finished, it's a slender stilleto, perfect for Azyra's size.

“May it serve you well, Azyra... 'Prestor'.” Seffestranias says.

“Thank you, Queen Seffestranias.” Azyra replies in almost-perfect draconic. Neither you or Scinnari prompted her response, and Scinnari immediately orders her to silence telepathically. For your part, you complement her for her initiative, but request that she check with you in the future. As instructed, Azyra bows in thanks after handing the gift off to a steward to take care of.

“You are most welcome, Princess.” Seffestranias replies. “Now, if I may take my leave...?”

“A moment...” you reply, gesturing for a servant to come forth. This particular gesture is for one of the most valuable responses you had prepared; despite going first, Seffestranias has made quite a showing. Perhaps why she went first.

In response to your gesture, a servant comes forth, bearing a small casket. Being made of adamantium, is fairly valuable on it's own, and the fact that it is twice as large on the inside, and filled with a variety of exquisite magical gems makes parting with it all the more painful. Seffestranias cannot resist cracking the casket open, and gazing for a moment at the contents. Her eyes burn with a fire you're certain yours have held, at times. Pleased, you feel confident in guessing.

“A gift I hope to be worthy of your generosity.” you respond, “Of course. Thank you for your gifts and for... assistance, in trying times.” Whether you are referring to just now or several months ago, you leave open to her interpretation.

The next to approach you, a minute later, is as expected, the Tazhmiri ambassador. He bows before you, surprisingly humble for one who could command equal respect, and stands. “Princess Azyra... I hope that this will allow you to make better use of them.” he replies, offering forth the obviously magic cape.Like the sword before it, it shrinks in Azyra's hands, hanging before her, and waving slightly, despite the lack of significant breeze. Azyra bows again, and hands it off to the servant as directed.

The rest of the reception proceeds very similarly, finally concluding with the reformation of the original group, and the final presentation of the mithril tiara. Expertly wrought, and brilliantly enchanted, if you do say so yourself. A simple circlet of mithril, but shining with enough magic for a dead man to see. Azyra kneels, and you place it on her head. It shifts, looking like liquid silver for a moment, before reforming as a more elaborate tiara. Azyra struggles to keep her countenance neutral, but you can tell she is delighted with it. Which is nice; you put /so/ much effort into that crown... You are aware of what craftsmen mean when they say 'a part of their soul', now.

You eventually depart, festivities still in progress. Scheduled to continue for the next week, though who knows quite how long all the guests will be able to stay. You suspect the halflings won't leave until you kick them out, and Seffestranias... Well, she may be interested in... consorting... with your lizardmen followers again, though you would hope she doesn't. You also suspect 'Ozzias' will stay the full length, if not longer; likewise, arrangements have been made for Lady Issa to do so.

Needless to say, none of the gifts received were hexed or cursed, though you did detect a few that were of questionable use, and more were of questionable quality- Several guests apparently sent one of their party out of the reception in panic, attempting to find a fitting gift for the child that was apparently several years older than they had expected. No one actually questions or challenges Azyra, or you. Despite this, though, the mixed horror and amazement does not entirely depart, and Azyra certainly notices some of it.

The only other truly significant gift given, in your estimation, was by the Morinthian ambassador; a blank spell book and an invitation to study among the Morinthian guilds, should she be inclined to pursue wizardly professions, and a small and deceptively simple steel puzzlebox that, when activated properly, whisks the user away to an extra-dimensional mansion of princely appointment.

Good relations with the Morinthians could prove a fairly good thing. As as far as I'm aware we lack a highly skilled mage on the payroll aside from ourselves. Anyone with ideas on how we could go about that? Other than simply mingling and hoping for an opening?

No, next thing is concluding the affair by talking with Azyra. We need to make it clear to her that the world will always be harsh and cold and that we will always be there for her as her family, blah blah. We don't want the shock and horror to be traumatic, it's probably the first time she's been in such mixed company.

My kneejerk reaction is "trap" upon reading this, followed by "eavesdropping" shortly afterward.

We should investigate it thoroughly, to make sure there is no hidden magic waiting to jump the user at some point.

Also, Lorekeeper search for the next thread.

Good idea. Tell her we love her and we think she's beautiful, and that fools who would say otherwise are just that -- fools. People who aren't her family can be dangerous or cold, and she will need to be on guard against all of them eventually. But at the end of the day she's our little princess and both us and mommy will always love her. <3

Make sure above all that she enjoyed the experience overall, state functions like this will probably be commonplace in her life and we want her to both be at ease with them and at the same time be on guard against intrigues.

"Look at them. Small people with small minds. They fear us, and it is right for them to do so. Remember that, my daughter. For one day you shall rule."

“What did you think, Azyra, my dear?” Scinnari asks after you return to your castle. Magic, of course, is the motive power for crossing the intervening distance.

“I didn't like it.” Azyra replies, to which Scinnari nods in encouragement. “They all... stared at me. Didn't like me. They thought I was...” Azyra says, obviously distraught, and searching for a sufficient word.

“Freak. Mutant. Aberration.” you helpfully provide, sweeping her up. “Listen to me, Azyra, you are different. Others will... Correction, others /may/ think this a bad thing. A horrible thing. Unnatural. They are wrong on all three accounts. You are better than any of them, and if you consider it, you will find it true. Unarmed, you are more dangerous than a human.” you reply, stroking her hand and claws. “You can already climb better than many humans; you can jump higher, glide, and someday, fly, because of your wings. Make no mistake, you are /stronger/ because you different... And your mother and I are quite pleased. We would want it no other way. I find it /fitting/ that my daughter shall be... unique, “

“And I am pleased my daughter shall be more able to care for herself than any mortal child.” Scinnari replies, “To say nothing of how... improved I consider your form.” she adds, stroking Azyra's feathered wings. “I suspect others... may grow to share that approval. Perhaps in the form of awe...”

“Indeed. And it would only be fitting.” you agree. “Know this, regardless of who you are, we will always love you. They... may not. Do not trust them, for at the end of the day, small minds will always fear what they do not understand.” Azyra nods meekly, and you concede that while she can understand it, this may be fairly heavy advice for her age. You decide to relent, and change the subject.

“Now... How would /you/ like to spend the rest of your birthday?”

I think not. We put all those measures like mirrored force shields and silences and shit in place to keep Azyra from having too much interaction with Cygnis before she is ready.

Who says we need Azyra there? Roll around in our gold, and all that.... (Okay, okay, I'll stop!)

I'd like to chat Seffy up, make sure she's satisfied and friendly. It looks to me like she just gave Azyra a +5 shapeshifting Adamantine Mythral Blessed Vorpal Keen.... (What would the base item be?) whatever, so she's good in my book. Also, it'd be an opportunity to reinforce the "I can tap that if I want to, I will always come back to you, but you don't tell me no." system we want to establish.

Take Azyra flying, keep our guests happy, and give them all fairly generous gifts. They should enjoy coming here, next time, their diplomats should be fighting for the privilege to be assigned here.

Not saying we should actually tap that, just saying we should reinforce that we can if we want to.

Alright, peace out, sleeptiemnow, go ahead and rip my ideas to pieces.

How about no? I mean, really, you don't go rubbing people's faces in shit just because you can. Bad form, man, and I can't think of any better way to embitter and forment betrayal.

I agree with you on the point about not rubbing it in Scinnari's face.
But I think he has a point about making sure that Seffie is enjoying herself, or at least, is satisfied with the party.
She provided some very valuable and powerful items, and while we may bump heads against her in the future, currently and for at least a few more decades, she is a good trading partner and useful ally.

I think it's a good think to set the 'We are ours, not hers' precedent, and to to demonstrate that whatever we do, we rebound to her. After all, what use is being in charge if you can't enjoy the pleasures once in a while? Sure, we don't need to actually scrwe Seffy, but let's set the foundation that we can if we want to. (Also, Scinnari's actually trying to be open minded and less.. clingy, it seems, so we should demonstrate that it's a good thing by stretching her tolerances... and reward her efforts duly by not actually getting with dat dragon.

Also, closest thing to I have to what a half dragon half devil might look like. I think it's SFW. If it isn't, ohmodpleasedon'tbanmeI'msorryforeverything.
