    141 KB Gladiatrix Manager Quest 6 gmq !!pyb5WSpixjT 05/06/11(Fri)00:59 No.14830436
You are a gnoll, captured and sold in your youth. Your name is Gneutered. You got the nickname in the early days of your arena fighting slave career, and it stuck. You accepted it as your legal name when you earned your freedom. Because you only know one line of work, you stayed in the arena fight business. The difference? Now you're the one giving the orders.

Your career has been going well. You've trained some slaves, earned some wins, and made a reasonable amount of money considering the amount of time you've been managing fighters.

After a few successful fights, Marianus, the arena's manager, offered you a death match against a fighter he described as a pushover. He offered to pay you exorbitantly. Something about it made you suspicious, and you turned down the offer. Then, to see what would happen, you bet on the pushover and coached her from backstage, allowing to just barely take the win -- and keep her own life.

Apparently, the woman was an aristocrat named Volcatia whose husband, after becoming angry with her family, had her declared insane, sold into slavery, and bought by a proxy, who sends her to deathmatches she has no hope of surviving.

Her family is paying you to keep her alive while they attempt to legally free her. In the last game, your new slave subdued her and refused to kill her, at your orders. This went over badly with the crowd and arena management, but you can probably recover.

After being followed by two strange men, you decided to go on the offensive. You reported your findings to Volcatia's family, receiving 150 SP for your success, Maximus or "Mr. Brick" as a temporary security measure, and information on Volcatia's owner. Then you talked your way into his house and tried your best to sell him on gladiatrix training for Volcatia. As you have caught the interest of his two friends -- one of whom proposes a demonstration, featuring Slicks -- he can't get rid of you as easily as he would like, and you can keep talking for the moment.

You are currently standing in Priscus' (Volcatia's owner) courtyard. It is a nice day. You are saying words as quickly as you can think of them. This will only work for a little while, so you should probably either organize your demonstration, or come up with another clever thing to do.

Oh shit! Also thanks for doing that one request.

Eunice has black hair that goes down to her jawline, pale skin, freckles, and is skinnyfatmode and pretty young. Volcatia is in her mid thirties and is the most cliche thin-faced roman aristocrat imaginable, aside from the dramatically reduced effort that goes into her appearance at the moment.

You are pic related. And not a slave, but I have a picture, so here it goes.

Start the demonstration between Slicks and Sept. Antonia is to assist them. Eunice is to watch. Too inexperienced to show off. Let's give a good show. Also, tell the girls not to do anything that will injure or otherwise impair themselves. Light bruises are OK, but nothing more than that.
    >> Anonymous 05/06/11(Fri)01:30 No.14830706
So we want to purchase Volcatia from him if at all possible, if that doesn't work we'll want to at least take over her training and put her in with our girls so she is less likely to die. If both of these offers are refused at least we'll have some ammunition with which to slander him. We'll want to hold off on asking to purchase her until after we have given a demonstration of our gladiatrixes in action and stated our confidence that we could train her to be an amazing gladiatrix.

Sensing that you might be running low on things to say, you decide to get the demonstration started. Slicks, being the fighter that Priscus' friend mentioned, gets one spot, and Septimia gets the other, as she is the only other fighter on her level.

You briefly take both fighters aside and quietly tell them to pull their punches as much as they can without it being noticeable. Both of them pick up light shields, and Septimia takes her club while Slicks takes her chain.

They head to the area with the most space, and you give the signal to start. They circle around each other, trading careful swings and parries.

You stand next to Priscus, slap his arm, gesture to the fight, lean towards his ear, and make whispered comments about the advanced techniques and counters in play.

Septimia goes on the offense, swinging her club, but Slicks is too fast. Unexpectedly, she charges into close range as well, landing an elbow shot to Septimia's side. The two grapple, then separate, unable to gain an advantage either way. When Slicks goes on the offensive, she is countered in turn -- but she absorbs a club blow to the stomach, and falls to the ground, unable to get up. Septimia looks a bit surprised; apparently she hit a bit harder than she meant to.

"See? Any of those blows could have taken your girl out. Experience always beats enthusiasm and talent. Of course, if you have both..."

Priscus' friends agree. Priscus, looking for a way to minimize the damage, makes a grunt of noncommittal agreement as well.

Time to be a big pain in the ass and insist on some details.

    >>14830706
You tried this, publicly, after Eunice subdued Volcatia in the "deathmatch." It did not work. Priscus is almost certainly employed by Volcatia's former husband.

You point out that your girls have all shown drastic improvement after just one month of working with you. And that your best two can handle any opponent in their league.

You propose a daily training session, for free, with your girls. You even offer to pay him to borrow Volcatia. This is too much for Priscus, who nearly attempts to throw you out personally. Luckily, his friend intervenes, politely inserting himself between the two of you to calm Priscus down.

They talk, privately. When they finish, Priscus agrees to let Volcatia have a short, daily workout. With Slicks. You gather that Priscus' friend owes him for this, badly. Firstborn child badly.

You smile and leave. You don't usually open your mouth to smile on account of the looks it gets you, but you can't help it this time.

    To do list:
-Meeting with Marianus in two weeks to
    -Volcatia training sessions
    -Regular training sessions
    -other stuff, as desired

Put some thought into what sort of fighting style and training would help Volcatia best. She's the one in the deathmatches and we don't have as long to help her due to having to work around her owner, so it would be good to put a bit of a focus on her.

I recommend teaching Volcatia exercise techniques so she can workout away from our short training sessions.

Also feed her, just in case her owner is withholding food in an attempt to weaken her.

Finally, have Volcatia slaughter things like chickens or a maybe a goat once every training session, to heighten her killer instinct. Use the meat to feed our gladiatrixes.

Good idea on the food and exercise techniques. We only get a little time with her, so teaching her stuff to do in her own time would be a very good idea.

For the games, we should put Slicks or Sept up for a deathmatch. They are so far above the competition at this level that it is a safe bet that they will survive, and it will be a good way to regain faith with the audience we slighted last games.
    >> gmq !!pyb5WSpixjT 05/06/11(Fri)02:36 No.14831217
    You go home.

Maximus has decided that it's best that he sleep on the floor in your doorway, barring objections. He's slightly concerned that, should shit go down, that your slaves will be in danger, or at best, unable to help. They're housed in separate rooms, locked at night, in a larger area that shares a wall with your house, but requires you to go outside in order to access. It's probably fine for now, but if you're feeling paranoid, you should come up with a few emergency procedures and rehearse them.

Morning training goes normally. You've developed a routine, and everyone else has accepted it. After some warmups, it's time to visit Volcatia. You leave Maximus in charge. The girls can mostly supervise themselves and get something done while you're gone.

Priscus' doorman waves you in, and you greet Priscus once you can find him. One of his friends you saw the other day is here too. In fact, Priscus quickly leaves, citing important business, leaving you alone with Volcatia and his friend.

You have the two fighters go over basic defenses and attacks. Volcatia, with constant, shouted assistance, does fine.

Next, you have them do some simple, repeatable exercises that Volcatia can do on her own. It's almost a waste for Slicks, but she serves as a decent model of proper technique for most of them.

Judging by Priscus' friend's reaction, this is absolutely fascinating.

Volcatia is eating, but she isn't on your fighters program of overeating and exercise. You take note of this and make plans to slip her something extra on the way out. You also give her a chicken to decapitate, because it can't hurt, even if she did have to kill before.

This was definitely a good use of your time. You can do anything you consider relevant, or simply continue until your time is up, leave, and fast forward two weeks with training guidelines, assuming you have no particularly complicated plans.

Over the next few weeks, you continue the same training program. Volcatia shows solid signs of improvement, but you can tell that it's mostly because she's starting from such a low skill level that any tiny bit of advice can help her.

Priscus pays minimal attention to you, but his friend always shows up on time and stays until the end. He's very much in favor of the training sessions, though he doesn't know very much about the games specifically, and actually seems a bit put off by the violence. Gradually, he absorbs a bit of information on the subject from you. Though it takes a while, as he's rather shy, you find out about his line of work (paying people to build things, an industry that apparently never runs out of demand).

The two weeks before your meeting with Marianus pass. You walk into his office, carrying the usual paperwork and making the usual plans.

    "Oh, it's you."

    Well, this could be better.

"You're making quite the name for yourself... or at least your girls are. I've had a lot of managers request 'anyone but one of those three' as an opponent. So, it's either time for your top three girls to move up the ladder, or I can MAYBE pull some strings and squeeze them into a team fight where they're outnumbered a bit."

He hasn't mentioned the deathmatch that ended in bruises, at least.

You put down Septimia, Slicks, and Antonina against five scrubs. Eunice (barring objections) will fight 1v1.

You tell Marianus that there's a lot of money in organizing the right sorts of deathmatches with the right sorts of opponents. You wink, a process which your face isn't built for and takes several seconds. You do it again to be sure.

Apparently he hasn't forgotten the last fight. Or your speech. You manage to calm him down, barely, and tell him that you merely wanted to connect him with a big pile of money from some nice, important people, and save the life of a poor helpless abused slave girl in the process.

He says "There sure is a lot of money in picking the right matchups." He looks at you meaningfully. You are suddenly aware that, though you are swimming in money by your own standards, you can't very well out-bribe an aristocrat.

The next day, you explain your plan to Slicks, and strategically leave her alone with Priscus' friend, using the excuse of needing to work with Volcatia one on one with a little bit more space.

    You find out the following:
-Priscus' friend seems to have been unaware that Priscus even had an arena slave until you showed up.
-Priscus' friend likes to stand about a foot closer to whoever he is talking to than the standard human distance.
-Humans touch each other sometimes, right? This is normal?
-Talking to Priscus' friend is difficult. Squeezing words out of him is hard work. Silences ensue. Slicks has trouble making human noises, but she found herself being the talkative one. She's fairly sure she did something wrong and is apologetic about not being able to get more out of him.

It looks like this guy is a dead end. A really, really, really gross dead end.

You can pursue any leads you feel like, skip to the fights, or a combination of the two.

    Yep.

    >How are they liking the art supplies and technicus?
Very well! Slicks particularly likes painting. Everything she produces is incredibly complex and completely incomprehensible.

Maximus gets in on the Tacticus, as he has a bit of experience with it, and soon the girls are able to comprehend the simpler attacks and counters. He even brings his own hat a few days in.

Everyone has a lot of down time, because you can only exercise so many hours a day, and having free time activities seems to really help the mood.

    >Have we made any progress in teaching the girls Gnoll during the week?
Never got a majority vote on this. You can start now, if you want.

You visit Volcatia's parents and report your findings. They immediately make plans to send someone to make a deal with Marianus.

Confirm learning gnoll (or don't). This is your last chance to make pre-fight arrangements, too, or handle other things.

Definitely yes on learning Gnoll, gives them and us a secret method of communication. Make sure our three fighters know that they need to really fight as a group to nullify the other's number advantage, if they take one down make sure she stays down for the fight, the enemy will be unorganized rabble, stay together and don't let them swarm or gang up. The question is whether we want to start the mud-slinging campaign on Volcatia's owner now ot wait until the someone her parents sent has started to make a deal with him.

Shields and maces will go for 10 SP each. Armor is trickier -- there are a lot of regulations on acceptable armor types. The gist is "nothing that remotely resembles or approaches military grade armor in quality." Getting better equipment there will probably require you to get custom work done, and possibly even custom designs.

Oh, and you have the equipment listed here. The weighted chain and tail knife are for Slicks, and the shield is for Antonina. Eunice is specialized in using the net and club. Other than those limits, your fighters can use any of your equipment just fine. You cycle them through all of it to teach them counter tactics.

Ok, lets leave the armor for after the fight, but buy the maces and shields now, let them train with it for the two weeks. First thing to do as well durring the training is to teach them the Gnoll for some maneuvers to pull during the fight.

I was thinking this, when we say a code word the two of the girls side rush the target of the third and go for a double swing at the head and legs. the target that they attack will change depending on how we say the code word. One for Slicks' opponent, a variation for Antonina's opponent and the last variation for Septimia.

A good idea would be to go watch the games of higher caliber gladiatrixes to scope out the competition and get familiar with the arena. Our slaves will be moving up to that level soon, and it would help to be more prepared.

Also, I don't trust Marianus. 3 on 5 sounds like a setup to punish us for the stunt we pulled last games. We should make sure the slaves are ready for things to get out of control very quickly, when that time comes.
    >> Anonymous 05/06/11(Fri)04:09 No.14831876
So the plan for the weapons upgrade is thus, Metal Shields and Maces for Slicks, Antonina and Septimia but keep Slicks with her chain for the 3v5.
Keep Eunice with her standard gear, Net and Club. We want her to become a grandmaster with it, using it like a whip a shield and find some way to humiliate her downed opponent.
    >> gmq !!pyb5WSpixjT 05/06/11(Fri)04:14 No.14831901
You buy maces and heavy shields for everyone that isn't specializing in other equipment.

You also start the process of teaching the girls gnoll. They obviously aren't going to get the hang of it in two weeks, so you focus on having them distinguish between the different noises, and memorize key words and phrases that you tie to the maneuvers and tactics you practice.

Fight day. In order, Eunice is against a scrub, Volcatia is against... someone... and the rest of the squadron is outnumbered nearly two to one.

Betting? Barring anything clever, things to yell at Eunice?

Our standard 5sp on Eunice, and lets get crazy and say 10sp on each of our three going against the 5. No betting on Vol this round.

Eunice, this is your first real fight, you are to go full out and not hold back. Use that net like a whip to blind your opponent from a distance and quickly close in to kneecap her. Trap her weapon in your net and rip it from her hand. If you can manage it, hog tie her in the end.
    >> Anonymous 05/06/11(Fri)04:27 No.14831974
So I have done some number crunching, our girls have earned us on average 58sp each aside from Eunice who has yet to earn from fighting. And I have come up with a goal for the girls to reach to earn their freedom 650sp to earn their freedom. We could set up a board and mark how much they have earned from each fight and how much they have left to get free.

We can currently only house 5 slaves, I would say we upgrade our house to hold more when we earn enough to do so. What would that cost and how long would construction take?
    >> gmq !!pyb5WSpixjT 05/06/11(Fri)04:40 No.14832030
Eunice walks out of her entrance. Though you know her skills are still a bit shaky in some areas, she looks like she's capable of doing what you say.

Of course, her opponent looks like she's capable of sticking her with a spear. No scared first timer here.

They circle each other a bit. Eunice stays out of the way. Eventually, Eunice's opponent gets nervous and lunges. Eunice swings her net in an arc, and it wraps around the spear as it passes by.

There's a short tug of war, followed immediately by a shoulder rush from Eunice that pretty much eliminates any chance of the spear coming into play any time soon. Eunice shoves her opponent, twisting around and sending both spear and net to the ground.

From there, it's all over. Eunice gives her opponent a few bruising strikes, then tackles her to the ground, tangling her up in the net once again and leaving her helplessly tied up. Standing up, Eunice puts her foot down on her former opponent's back and raises her fists, not bothering to extract an official submission from her. The people who showed up early enough to see it are entertained.

Eunice has to untie her opponent to retrieve her net before exiting, but the bit before that was good. Hopefully that will be the one that sticks in people's heads.

Volcatia is next. You're not sure exactly how this is going to go. She's more prepared than she's ever been, but it really comes down to how well her parents managed Marianus.

Evidence suggests they did so very well. Volcatia's opponent looks like she might die on her own if left for a week. She's underweight and pale. Her owner might actually be trying to make a profit on a discount slave purely on the base pay.

Still, like Volcatia, she's got a sword, and one desperate flail can be lethal, either immediately or from the recipients inability to fight back further.

You give Volcatia some minimal directions -- mostly encouragement and review -- before turning your attention to the stands.

A few seconds of scanning the crowd reveals Priscus, and with him, the friend who convinced him to let you train Volcatia. The spies are nowhere to be seen.

Back in the arena, it appears your confidence was well placed. Volcatia's opponent seems to be having trouble holding her sword up, and she's reacting a bit slowly. After some circling, and a wild swing from her opponent, Volcatia lunges, scoring a hit with the tip of her sword. Her opponent cries out, dropping her guard and allowing Volcatia to score a second hit. After she drops to the ground, when Volcatia realizes she will have to finish the job, you find yourself involuntarily looking at the floor.

In your entire career, you've only actually killed four in the arena. One of them was an accident. You remember all of them. Volcatia is nowhere near your experience level, but she's on her second dead body. It's worrying, even from the safe distance you see it from.

A few fights go by, and then it's time for your team. Their opponents seem to be from different trainers. There are two that you aren't worried about armed with clubs and bucklers, but the one with the sword looks dangerous. The final two, while unimpressive, are at least sort of beefy, which is its own special kind of dangerous.

Her is what you do, Antonia you and Slicks go after one of the flies and Septimia the other. Split the weaker up and then go into it like this; Slicks handles the sword with your chain. Use the reach to keep out of her range. Antonia you and Septimia try to fight the beefy broads together. Disarm them and play keep away. Listen for the Code Word and converge on the target as planed.

Say what you want about having her kill a chicken or a goat at the end of her training, but one of the hardest things to do with a blade is to learn how deep to push it in order to kill something. People think it is easy, that the flesh simply parts and the creature dies. Not true. Once the blade starts cutting into the sinew, muscles, and bones of an animal, it takes a lot of force, and a lot more will, to get it done.

You have a plan. That plan is going to work.

It falls apart a little bit when the flies, as you have mentally named them, hide behind their more threatening teammates.

Slicks does her part, keeping the sword-woman back with her constantly swinging chain -- temporarily. She parries the woman's charging attack at the last second, but it's close. Slicks starts to fight up close, bashing with her shield and using her chain as a rather bad set of brass knuckles, but she's merely holding out for now.

Septimia and Antonina form their usual team, facing off against the braver two fighters. They advance and retreat as one, and the constant barrage of attacks proves too many for one of the women to parry. Antonina's mace catches one of them in the side of the head with a powerful blow, and she collapses in a heap.

This does not help the morale of the rear-guard.

Slicks struggles with her opponent. The best she can do is to grapple and stall. Given enough time, she might pull off a win, but that sword is dangerous. Every once in a while, it gets much too close for comfort.

The sword woman is clearly the one to worry about. You shout out [ALL][SLICKSWISE], hoping to take out the main threat.

Unfortunately, the sword woman wheels Slicks around rapidly. She's not quite in lizardfolk shield mode just yet, but the sword woman keeps her positioned between herself and your fighters for long enough that the rest of her team can get their shit together.

The flies, realizing that their competent team member might go down any second, becoming unable to protect them, pick this moment to rush. It's a haphazard rush, but it's heartfelt.

The bigger woman attacks with the flies, forcing Antonina to focus her full attention on the mass rush.

Your team is surrounded, but holding together.

    [SWITCH!]

Slicks can't get away to switch, but if Antonina and Septimia can give her some breathing room, it's doable. The two parry and back up as a group, then charge together.

The sword woman is forced to let Slicks go in order to avoid being smeared across the arena floor. She blocks one blow with her buckler, and parries the other with her sword.

Slicks wastes no time, hissing and hopping ten feet in a split second, popping up in the middle of the three weaker opponents. The biggest one raises her arms to parry the lizard teeth flying at her face, and gets a chain-wrapped fist in the stomach as a punishment for her mistake.

Antonina and Septimia combined probably have an advantage. Slicks is either going to go berserk and eat everyone in her vicinity, or get dogpiled.

Septimia should go for a disarm attack. A heavy mace is very hard to block with a sword. At best it might snap the blade. Sword Lady's shield is a wooden buckler, right. Antonina should hammer on that as hard as she can, make Sword Lady tired and bruised on that arm so she can not block as well.

Slicks should go for a trip attack on on of the flies as she circles around so that the other two have to go over their fallen friend. This should give her some space and a chance to unhook her jaw and do the hiss to charge them when they flinch. Then go for a choke/body slam with her chain on beefy broad, Yelling the whole way down.

The sword woman feints at Antonina, then thrusts at Septimia, making it through her guard and sending a trickle of blood down her mace arm. It's just a scratch, but it's a reminder of how things can go badly in a moment.

Of course, this works both ways. The woman's thrust at Septimia left her open to attack on the other side. Antonina's mace catches her full force under the arm, and she crumples to the ground.

Slicks hops back a few feet, flailing around in all directions with her tail knife and chain. Nobody wants to be near her.

From there, it's a simple matter of chasing down the weaker portion of the team, one to one. Antonina gets to perform her post-finisher, the STD, on the sword woman that gave the entire team so much trouble.

Your total winnings for the day's fights amounts to 82 SP, though part of that was simply earning back the money you bet.

They need to work hard to keep up with the more well funded team. Once we get back and talk with Volcatia's father to see how things are going for them and collect our 150sp, what say we revile the amount the girls have to earn for us to get their freedom. 650sp sound good to everyone? We are betting 10 sp on our advanced 3 and 5 sp on Eunice from now on as standard bets. Let them know that if they lose the money we lost on betting on them goes against their toltal earned. We should keep track of it on a board in the training area.
