    47 KB Girl Quest: Chapter 4 The Narrator !!fhyQBh9j3zK 05/22/11(Sun)01:01 No.15008341
    You are the little girl.

You are having a tea party.

Penelope, the girl on the opposite end of the table is slouched down in her chair, hiding her face behind her teacup.

It is unclear which of you is hosting the party. On one hand, you are most definitely outside of your own castle. On the other hand, minutes earlier a small army summoned from your imagination destroyed Penelope's forces and captured her, making the castle occupied territory under your control, at the bare minimum. Also, you provided the tea and cakes.

Another girl, Issabella, is in the next room. She was staying in the castle too. She didn't participate in the battle, and while she's not exactly friendly, she hasn't actually called for your death. At your feet is King John, a giant frog with a crown and scepter who was an important part of the team of imagined warriors that helped you win the battle.

While it's tempting to let King John eat your former enemy and be done with it, sitting down and having tea has calmed you down a bit. You may even want to discuss terms of surrender.

The next time you see Issabella poke her head through the doorway, you wave at her to come in. Of course, since you wouldn't have done that without a place for her to sit, there's a third chair at the table by the time she arrives.

"So, let's get down to business."

You pause to select the cake that you deem the daintiest, and bite off the smallest piece of the corner that can be detected. You chew. Penelope and Issabella wait.

"We can be friends. You can stay here. But I don't want to fight anymore, so you can't have weapons or summon more soldiers."

Penelope is rooted to her chair, silent. Issabella breaks the silence. "And you won't hurt Penelope or me?"

    "I promise."

You extend your hand. Issabella tentatively takes it and you shake. You offer your hand to Penelope next, and say "It's up to you. Is this going to work out?" This seems to push her over the edge. She puts out her hand and brushes it against yours, looking at the floor. You grab it and give it a pump.

"Perfect! I'm so glad we could work this out."

You can here the sound of your castle expanding.

You quickly imagine a choir of frogs. They harmonize beautifully, but they are also quite loud. Their music nearly covers up the sounds of Penelope's outer wall collapsing as your castle inches forward.

Next, you relieve Issabella of her serving duties, replacing her with a bland, forgettable, human shaped servant in a suit.

Finally, you have a nice tea party, full of politeness, conversation, and treats. Your two new "friends" are very nearly distracted from their new situation. The unstated meaning of the party is quite clear, though.

    It is almost night time.

    You yawn.

"Well, we must do this again soon, but I think it's time for everyone to go to bed, don't you?"

You don't call attention to your new portrait, but it's bigger than the stairs that lead to the bedrooms, and its eyes look down on everyone who enters the room.

You go home. Penelope's outer wall is mostly absorbed into yours, or knocked over.

You have a nice sleep and a relaxing breakfast.

Looking outside of your window and stretching, you immediately notice two things. First, your walls have expanded in the night to completely surround Penelope's keep. It's now a little island with no easy way in or out.

    Second, the world is smaller.

Your world is not a reliable place. You're used to the regions outside of your castle changing from day to day. You're used to some of the regions not making the slightest bit of sense. But you've never been worried about running out of world. Now, this is a distinct danger. If you look far enough, the ground seems to bend away from you and disappear below.

You have a hard time looking at whatever is beyond this artificially close horizon.

The easiest thing to do would be to get closer. Our chosen form of transport is a bicycle with propellers.
A tandem bicycle of course, because our friends will definitely want to come with us.

You walk to Penelope's castle, summon a couple of ladders to get over the wall, summon a three seated, winged bicycle with propellers instead of wheels (aimed backwards, or course, otherwise it wouldn't work), and knock.

"Hello! I was thinking of going on a little ride! Would you like to join me?"

They join you. King John rides in the basket. You ring the bell when you feel like it.

You only have to travel about a mile before you reach the edge. There's a pretty, but poorly maintained park here, cut nearly down the middle, with one half completely missing. Beyond it, there is a featureless light gray expanse, like clouds on a rainy day.

You launch yourself past the border slightly, angled so you will coast back if anything goes wrong. You immediately find yourself having to concentrate much harder to keep King John, and more importantly, your bicycle, solid. Gravity, unfortunately, is just as reliable here. You turn back, a little bit more suddenly than you had intended. You pilot the bike over the park, breathing a sigh of relief.

You steer the bicycle down to the ground, bringing it to a halt on the soft grass.

"Well, this isn't good. Any ideas?"

Issabella gets down on the ground, lying on her stomach and poking her head over the edge. Penelope hangs back.

"I don't see anything! Well there's dirt. And... it seems it doesn't go down very far before there's more fog. We're not standing on very much at all."

She thinks about what this means, and then immediately stands up and takes several careful steps back.

You hear and feel a rumble behind you. You turn to look. Several blocks away, you can see a figure running down the street. Where it goes, more of the fog beyond the edge of the park appears.

If it keeps moving, you'll be cut off.

    "I command you to halt!"

Your voice echoes off of the houses, sounding much louder than you had expected.

The figure stops, turns to stare directly at you, grabs a large chunk of the street, and eats it.

Then it charges back down the street, traveling perpendicular to you, leaving a trail of grey nothingness wherever it goes.

Well, you tried. Time for King John to earn his continued existence. You gather everyone up and go in for a strafing run.

As you get in range, you see that the figure is a girl with torn clothes, dirty hair, and a blank expression. Her arms and legs vary in exact length from second to second. You're able to intercept her from a safe distance, shouting "FIRE" at King John.

King John's tongue shoots out of his mouth and wraps around the girl's neck.

The girl's hands seize King John's tongue, and pull.

You react quickly, summoning a cloud of pillows for yourself and passengers to land on, your bike twisted beyond immediate usefulness. You ignore the bike, and it fades away.

The girl changes direction to charge straight at you. Her mouth opens wider than it should be able to. The fog behind her contains a horde of tiny shapes.

Well, I somehow doubt it'll work, but try grappling the girl.

If/when that fails, the main purpose of the wall should be to split up the bobbly creatures so we can take on a more manageable number at a time. Then John starts gobbling them up one at a time as they get closer, hopefully thinning them out enough for the girls to take out what's left through attacking/disbelieving/whatever.

We should use that willpower to strengthen the wall. It's smack dab in the middle of their horde and it's what's going to keep them from overrunning us. I say invest in making it stronger and bigger, hopefully to occupy more motes at a time.

It's a wall. It just needs to keep them occupied while we take out the other half on the other side. Even if it somehow can't grapple with great accuracy, making it bigger forces them to waste more time going around it or attacking it.

Wall grapples Enemy Girl + a blob on the right side. Goal is to delay the right side.
King John moves and attacks the blob nearest Enemy Girl from the leftmost possible position. Goal: Disengage to the left, separate blob from Enemy Girl
Penelope attacks the blob sticking out on its own. Goal: Deal damage to the enemy while it's safe.
Issabella and Titania move up to Penelope and John. Goal: Stay near forces that can defend.

I get the impression that A high attack power wouldn't be necessary for these, so 5 may be sufficient.
Now that I consider it, if the walls second grapple goes to the blob to the right of the token, and given KJ two attacks, he wouldn't need to step back.

You concentrate on the girl. She can't be real. Nobody can do the things she is doing. For a minute, it almost works. She seems to shrink a little bit, her proportions returning to normal. Then, at the last second, you lose control, and she snaps back to the form you're used to.

As an experiment, it wasn't a complete failure, but it doesn't really help.

The wall has more luck. It keeps the girl and the most threatening mote under control.

This allows everyone free reign to pile onto her.

Issabella lands several wide punches. King John grabs her arm with his tongue.

You clear your throat. "If the next words out of your mouth are anything b..."

Penelope, without saying a word, chops her head off.

The girls neck is gone. Her head floats politely above her shoulders. She turns to look at Penelope, a confused expression on her face. After they stare at each other for a moment, she is gone.

The motes, who have been scrabbling to get to the other side of the wall, evaporate.
