The picture you're referring to was somewhat else's adaptation of the Mantis Warriors. Somewhat of an inspiration of the Rising Sons' style, but we try to keep it strictly classic space marine style, with a few armor tweaks, as many chapters have. You know, SUPERFICIAL CHANGES TO PRE-EXISTING ARMOR.
And the Mongols did eventually use scimitars in their history. Their empire did span across Central Asia, Persia and the Middle East, after all.
Your butthurtness only seems to come from the idea of a Japan related space marine chapter. What's so horrible about Japan, again?

The shrill cries of WEEABOO are pretty retarded since /tg/ has been discussing this chapter for 5 threads already and no one's been particularly against it before. But I fear some of the more eloquent trolls do have a point. Let me clarify.

Even thought White Scars are pretty clearly MONGOLS IN SPACE and Space Wolves are VIKINGS IN SPACE, fluffwise, those chapters aren't really that close to the cultures they reference. There's a bunch of thematic references, like names and weapons, but the chapter fluff doesn't mirror the historical source material. I mean, the Wolves don't have a guy named Erik the Red or something. The Khan of the White Scars isn't a carbon copy of Genghis, he has his own story and myth.

In the same way, I think we should strive to distance the Rising Sons from actual Japanese history and myth. That means not carbon-copying actual historical characters to become Marine leaders. It means working more to adapt Japanese influences to 40k, and not vice versa. I think we need to be more subtle.

I agree, but I like what we have so far. This is a non-canon fan-made chapter. A few historical references is not going to be the end of the world. And I was the guy trying to discourage talk of bow-bolters and sengoku-style warfare.
We need to remember that these are space marines first and samurai second. So while it might be acceptable to make certain officer marines a but more flamboyant with the samurai influence, the average marine should definitely resemble the average space marine over samurai. A few superficial add-ons would be acceptable, though.

No. Katanas are just power swords. They're nothing special, just artificial. The Rising Sons use chain swords and the like as well, but if someone's using a power sword, it's just shaped like a katana. Just like how the White Scars use power scimitars and the Space Wolves use power axes. Hell, the Space Wolves have a chain axe unique to their chapter!

Yes, we could include every single event from Japanese history into making the Rising Sons worthy of nothing less than the second coming of Fat Man and Little Boy, or we could make it something decent.

Let's try that. Perhaps saying fuck the samurai idea except for penitent quests and similar. Going solo on a quest to restore honor or other shit would make sense for them to revert more to their homeworlds style. As it is now, all we have is something people will look at and go "Herp derp, ching chong ping pong" at.

Seriously, do these guys have any major flaw yet? Every chapter has to have a flaw of some kind, be it a military one or a personality one.

Hows about a complete lack of concern for humanities safety and those in their personal care? A human looks at a Rising Son the wrong way, or doesn't show him adequate deference, and he might cop a bolter shell to the skull.

A civilian who doesn't step out of a Rising Son's path will be violently thrown out of the way, and the civilian populations under their personal protection live in fear of earning the displeasure of the Chapter.

Well, the Rising Sons are accustomed to ruling with an iron fist. They're all recruited from a highly disciplined warrior caste. Elsewhere in the Imperium, government and the military is separate for the most part, but in the Yamato subsector government _is_ the military. And they view the civilian populace with a mixture of disgust (filthy idle parasites that are no good in a fight), pity (they will never achive our level of greatness, we must take care of them), and weariness (if we didn't have to keep tending to these wretches we could focus on getting our war on and wiping out those xenos and heretics in the next sector over). They are instilled with a great sense of responsibility for their civilian charges, but responsibility means power. If they see the need for a curfew, they will enforce it no matter what. They (or rather, their PDF troops) will execute children that played outside for too long. Combine the disregard for human lives of the Imperium with the rigidity and traditionalism of Japanese culture. That's what you get.

How about the civilian population is expected to rise up in arms/do honorable suicide if their world is about to beoverran by enemy forces? Like, the Space Marines, the IG and PDF have fallen, now the civilians must pick up the lasguns from the dead or seppuku? And this is ingrained in the civilian mind as honorable? As thus, deserters and their ilk would probably be vilified or given the BLAM as soon as possible.
Also, the higher-ups don't care if a plan would inflict massive casualties on their side, as long as it brings a bigger psychological impact/casualty rate on the enemy.
And instead of katanas and power swords, why not make them be good at miniaturizing stuff, and thus you have a thinner, more slender kind of chainsword?

Nepotism runs rampant in the Chapter. If the majority of Marines are recruited from noble clans, those clans still carry weight in the Marine's life after induction. An older marine from the same clan as a younger marine will side with and support him over a brother from another clan, indeed most companies are seperated along human clan lines. As a result the Rising Sons are a factional, scheming group, constantly trying to get one up on their rivals from their previous lives in their new one.

Recruits taken from the peasant class are treated poorly as a result.

You could make Spartan Marines (I believe the Minotaurs are the canon Spartan Marines from the rare snippets of fluff that exist about them), and their view on the civilian population would be exactly the same. In fact, wherever you have a warrior caste, this will happen. Nothing particularly Japanese about it.

Now, the fact that the subsector is named Yamato I don't actually like, I'd prefer to rename it to something that isn't a direct transfer of the source material. However, I don't want to go against the names of things established in the previous threads. I don't want to start everything over. One could argue that a Yamato subsector is fine in a galaxy that has a Gothic sector. If one culture works, why not another?

It provides all the supplies, equipment, training, and also some of the representatives sent to worlds with an Imperial Guard presence. While they do not directly control the prosecution of Imperial military strategy, they have devolved power to different sections of the Imperium, at the planetary level, subsector level and sector level.

    >http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Armageddon It's basically a wartorn hell hole. No real government other than military. Not civilian run.

Armageddon is one of the largest hive worlds in the Imperium. Most of the hives are still intact after all the wars. It has a functional civilian government and has always had one.

    >http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Vostroya Run mostly by the Mechanicum. Supplies every first born son to the military. Not civilian run.

The AdMech is a civilian organization (though it has its own militia forces). Also, Vostroya, while a forge world, is not technically _run_ by the AdMech, but has a civilian government.

    >http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Krieg Entire planet devoted to war, no real civilians, just genetic breeding stock for the Death Korps. Not civilian run.

Untrue. The Death Korps are replenished by cloning as well as the regular-born population of Krieg's hives. Also, it is run by a civilian governor, propped up by the military junta established by the loyalist forces.

Most Space Marine Chapters don't run their homeworlds, they just provide special status in regards to the Imperial Tithe and personal protection. Armageddon does have a civilian government, or at least used to until the Third war broke out. Vostroya might have a lot of veterans, but that doesn't make it military governed, just as the American governments after World War Two weren't military dictatorships despite the majority being military veterans.

The majority of Worlds are run by Planetary Governors, some are Guard veterans, others aren't. They however aren't overall military commanders of their worlds, with only some exceptions.

The Rising Sons make unpredictable allies. Their disdain for humans makes it difficult to get their cooperation in joint-military campaigns, and they are as likely to leave if they find the war unsatisfactory as they are to stay and fight. The only reason they are largely tolerated is because of their excellent relationships with most of the First Founding Chapters, and the deference they show to them in military matters.

A Rising Son will defer to a first founding marine in most matters, and are quick to ingratiate themselves in their good graces through gifts and pleasantries. They count social 'victories' as highly as military ones, and considered their playing host to Logan Grimnar on his way to take command of the Cadian defenses in the 13th Black Crusade as a great honour, lauding him with poems, gifts and the attention of the most beautiful geisha women brought from all over the surrounding system.

After a tactical squad rescued an isolated and under heavy fire Brother Corbulo of the Blood Angels and his sanguinary guard, it was deemed approriate to grant the sergeant terminator honours for bringing the bonds between the Angels and the Sons even closer.

Rising Sons techmarines dislike working with Servitors, considering them too clunky and crude, and are instead granted apprentices from amongst the scout companies. These apprentices they teach the ways of the Machine God, grooming them until they are ready to be sent to Mars to recieve more formal training.

An apprentice splits his time learning the ways of the forge and the ways of a combat brother, often serving as a ready replacement if a techmarine is absent from the battlefield, able to perform minor repairs on broken equipment.

They don't fight like White Scars however and keep fairly close to the codex astartes, with only some minor variations.

Does that mean they are notably eastern in philosophy? Eastern combat doctrines are a bit different than what Americans are used to because they are from the age of the sword rather than the age of the gun. Main idea is that you are the weapon, the sword/gun/whatever is merely another part of you that expresses your intentions to do harm.

Eastern culture used to be so awesome. I feel bad that we are effectively eroding it.

Actually, I never got why GW never played up the Tau as being THE GREATER EAST GALACTIC CO-PROSPERITY SPHERE or something. There's certainly hints towards it (brainwashing, sterialising and so on). It'd certainly make the Tau fit in more with the setting. Bonus points if you give them crazy war aims, like Japan had in WWII (such as their wish to own Cuba, among a number of other countries)

    >>15063623

Mifune Toshiro walked slowly towards the podium, luminous lights beaming down upon him from above. As he approached the stand, he turned his eyes towards the assembled mass of space marines before him. They wore armour of finest Prussian blue and Payne's grey, with brilliant golden highlights. Upon their pauldrons they wore the emblem of their noble brotherhood, a rising sun of crimson red, a skull upon its face. Toshiro knew that, including himself, there stood a thousand battle-brothers in the vast auditorium; a thousand angels of death and destruction. Finally, he reached the podium. Slowly, he rubbed his gauntlet-covered hands upon its surface and, for just a few seconds, he thought of his predecessors,; his fellow chapter masters from millennia long past.
    He began:

“Brothers... Sons of the Great Khan, proud harbingers of the Emperor's wrath and dear brothers in arms; soon we face perhaps the greatest thread our prestigious chapter has faced since its founding eight millennia ago.

“On that distant day eight millennia ago, our illustrious parent-chapter, the White Scars, gave birth to our chapter. While our brother-chapter from that same founding was lead astray by the heretical whims of the Tyrant, we proudly fought and died following the ways of our Great Khan.

“A billion xenos have fallen to our blades, bolters and bikes; a billion more shall soon follow!”

    (continued)
    >> Toshiro's Speech Shock 05/26/11(Thu)21:23 No.15064530
    >>15064512

Toshiro wiped the spit from his mouth, pausing for a few seconds to catch his breath. There had been no contact from Brother-Captain Katsuo's squadron since they went to investigate the disappearance of Baron Paral Von Hoskarl II, a Rogue Trader who had apparently discovered treasures on some Throne-forsaken rock. Brother-Captain Katsuo's last message was from just before he and his men entered the tomb. Soon after, reports of Necron activity began to pour in, as more and more planets were raided by the ancient malevolence, seemingly heading closer towards the Yamato subsector. It didn't take long for Toshiro to realise that the Necron were coming for them. Why? He could not say; perhaps they blamed Katsuo and his men for waking them from their ancient slumber. However, it mattered not; Toshiro would avenge the loss of his brothers.

“As I am sure you are all aware, the vile filth known as the “Necron” have began raiding planets in the nearby Shang subsector. These attacks were without provocation, as expected from xeno dirt, and left few survivors.

“We have studied the plantery systems which were raided and discovered that they form a path... A path heading straight for our home sector. We cannot allow this filth to pollute our beloved Imperium; WE MUST DESTROY THE NECRONS!”
    >> Toshiro's Speech Shock 05/26/11(Thu)21:24 No.15064548
    >>15064530

Toshiro raised his fist as he yelled out, watching as the marines before them raised their own fists in defiance; the Necrons would curse the day they awakened from their disgusting pit.

“Tomorrow, Tokugawa, Date, Chosokabe, Shimazu, Uesugi and Takeda companies shall set off for their world and BURN IT TO THE GROUND!” Once more, Toshiro wiped the saliva from his mouth.

“Meanwhile, Oda, Hojo, Tachibana and Mori shall divide themselves among the planets of the Yamato subsector in the unlikely case that five companies cannot break the Necron.

“My Brothers, soon we shall avenge the deaths of those Imperial citizens who were consumed by the unholy blight and, more importantly, avenge the deaths of our brothers who have already fallen to the Scourge! FOR YAMATO! FOR THE GREAT KHAN! FOR THE EMPEROR!”

As Toshiro turned his back from the podium, leaving his brothers crying out for the destruction of the Necron, he couldn't help but feel that something would go wrong on that distant Tomb World; that he had invited doom upon both him and his chapter. He only hoped that he and his brother marines would wipe out the ancient evil once and for all.
    “For the Emperor...”

Enhanced eyes surveyed the land before him. The air was stale and dry, the earth barren and sandy. The sun was dim; burning halfheartedly to cast what seemed like an eclipsed light over land. The marine took a moment to appreciate the feeling of being the only living thing on an entire planet. In the distance, he could make out the skyline of the ruins. He was close. The marine stomped his armored foot against the accelerator of his jetbike.
A voice murmured in his ear. “Status report.”
The marine tapped his vox bead, “I am almost there. Has the scan picked anything up?”
“Actually, it has.” His battle brother replied. “Five readings of life within the compound. There is too much interference to determine what kind, I’m afraid.”
A sneer escaped him. “I thought this was a dead world.”
    “Perhaps animal life still persists.”
“Perhaps someone was fool enough to come here.”
“Do you think we’ve been tracked?”
“Has the radar picked up any drop ships?”
“Only remnants of minor warp activity. We assumed a recent warp storm or...” There was a pause on the other side of the channel followed by a curse. “I apologize for my poor judgment. If their ship is cloaked we will find it.”

“See that you do. I shall deal with the five down here.” He was within the ruins, now. Obsidian pillars black as pitch flew past him. His jetbike eventually slowed to a halt before a building as massive as it was ornate. Sleek and black, it featured golden inlays of mysterious runes of a language long forgotten and towering statues of an alien race that looked nearly human. If what he was looking for was anywhere on this desolate planet, it was here.
Stepping inside, he felt the temperature drop to frigid temperatures. He looked down the black abyss of the unlit corridor before him and sighed as he reached for his helmet. Through the lens, a green haze cut through the dark. It was deathly quiet, only the sound of his footsteps sharply echoing off the walls. And something else. Other footsteps not far behind him. The five other had caught up with him.
He spun around with frightening speed and raised his plasma pistol. He sent a three shot burst soaring down the hall. This was quickly followed by a cry of, “Brother Mitsutora is down! Target is hostile! Engage! Shoot to kill!”

The marine grinned and began his sprint down the hallway as bolt rounds zipped past him and lodged into the tight walls of the corridor exploding fist-sized divots into architecture untouched by life for millennia. He fired over his shoulder. He could see the opening to a room glowing with green light at the end of the hall. A bolt round struck him in the pauldron and blew out a chunk of ceramite. The force caused him to spin around. As he was forced to turn and face his assailants, his pushed off with his heels and sent himself sliding away from them, his pistol spitting plasma all the way. He could see one of his shots strike an attack in his midsection, downing him.
His momentum died shortly after sliding out from the hall and into the room. The plasma pistol was hot in his hand. He tossed the weapon aside, preferring not to have it explode on him in the midst of battle and drew his power sword. With the press of a rune the sleek, slightly curved blade hummed to life.

“Face me if you dare!” He roared. The first came charging from the darkness of the corridor, chain sword whirring. He was screaming a battlecry, but did not get to finish it. With the flick of his wrist, the fanatic was stumbling past him gurgling in his own blood. The marine grimaced. A new recruit, most likely. What a pitiful standard these warriors had. Before his body hit the ground the final two emerged. They had holstered their bolters, one drawing a combat knife, the other with a chainsword. “Do you accept my challenge?” He said with intensity. “One on one combat.”
The knife-wielding enemy glanced at who looked to be his superior, who in turn nodded. “We accept. I shall face you first.”
“Very well.” He grinned and threw his sword at him. The enemy died with a look of surprise on his face that never left him. His subordinate cried, “Brother-Captain Katsuo!” And reached for his bolter. Before he could even get his finger to the trigger, the marine had a melta pistol pointed at him.

A moment later, he turned from the puddle of flesh and metal, chuckling “Too easy…” Before him was a monolith with staircase leading up to his prize. An ornate gold-and-obsidian orb. He sauntered up the steps and wrenched the orb from its stand. An unearthly low hum quaked the building. He winced. If he were human, he would be writhing about on the floor, shrieking and clutching his head. He waited until the hum subsided before tapping his vox bead, “This is Akechi Mitsuhide. I have the orb, but I’m afraid I have woken a sleeping giant. Have you found their ship?”
“Yes, my lord. It has been dealt with. I trust you made short work of the loyalists.”
“I have. Returning to the drop zone.”
