Originally I was thinking he was a powerful demon or devil that was slighted, attacked by a powerful being of good or some kind of mage and dumbstruck, hit with a Godly-strength Enfeeblement or somesuch and turned to Good alignment. He knows he wants revenge on someone, but...who? Why? Argh, it makes him angry. And sometimes that anger makes him smash things, especially demonic things. Perhaps he hates how his reflection looks.

But if he's worshiped like freaking Pelor, that changes things. Perhaps the belief of his domain has been confused, and so his original nature (demonic, wants revenge) is getting mixed up with new believers' prayers that he's the god of good corn or save construction projects or something.

I like the idea that he is widely worshiped because of Vader Syndrome. He was a badass evil god before his notoriety and general awesomeness lead to jealousy within his pantheon. So his allies joined together and banished him, and as a result he has sworn vengeance upon them. At this point he leads the fight against the evil pantheon instead of the cold war style stance held by the regular gods of good.
