    "Ish mal'lak bin da reima..."

The words tug at your ears. From the blackness of your slumber, your eyes flutter. Slowly, your vision melds into color and light. Rubbing your face, you're greeted by a great oak. You dust yourself off, standing in the middle of the forest...your forest.

Let's get some things out of the way before we go any further, though. Who are you? (Name, race, age)

Well, it wasn't exactly something you trained for in life.

You were born to a loving family, raised to be the village carpenter just like your father before you, and even had three kids. Life was pretty good with your cozy straw-hut and fulfilling trade. Maybe mushroom soup wasn't a good idea... However, something changed in your life; something that drove you from your home and family.

Um...remind me of the details again; how did you come to this place?

What can you do? One day, you're out getting wood for you job; the next, you're in the back of a wagon being told that your straw-hair wig really brings out your eyes. Maybe they had some of the mushroom soup...

Anyway, you manage to escape from these bandits. However, it was a long...long...few months before they finally figured it out. When they deposited you, you were far from home. Now, what exactly stopped you from making it back? What called you to a life of nature?

    Ah yes; the Old Man.

Wandering through the wilderness takes a lot out of a man, and you were beginning to get desperate. Your wife, you children, your village, the same green pastures that you've known since you were a small child; you'd never see those again. You weren't known for being weepy, but if there was ever a moment in your life, it'd be now.

After a good two days of traveling searching for a direction, the great wilderness seemed to twist and turn back into itself. Exhausted and hungry, you came to a conclusion: you were lost.

You grasped the fallen autumn leaves in frustration.

"Feeling a bit lost, are we?"

You raise your head, turning to see a decrepit old man, dressed in a brown linen robe being held up by a gnarled stick. His gray hair seemed to fade into his pale skin, a gentle smile on his face.

"Is there any way I can help?" he asks, chapping his wrinkled lips.

Putting your head in your hands, you sigh.

"I am lost and I cannot find my way home." You twiddle a loose leaf in your fingers. "Maybe I never will, and I have resigned myself to that thought."

The Old Man nods quietly, his eyes unmoving.

"I used to be a carpenter, but the soup I ate left me stranded and bewildered. Now I stand before you, starving and in need of guidance"

The Old Man scratches his nose, giving you a quizzical look.

"Uh...you're a little...talky." He shakes his head, shrugging. "But...I've taught stranger."

He flips his wrist, an apple appearing in his hand. Hobbling over to you, he bends over, offering you the apple.

In your delirium, you see the apple bend and swirl into...mushroom soup. Cursed thing!

"Please no mushroom soup, sir..." You manage to croak through a slight migraine.

The Old Man looks at the apple, then back to you. He smiles wryly.

    "Perhaps you should eat..."

Mushroom soup or not, one thing was clear to you: you were hungry. Grasping the apple, you begin heartily devouring it. Maybe it was the hunger and mushrooms talking, but you've never tasted something so good: tart, firm, and filling. As you manage the first layer, you manage to squeeze a few words through your chewing cheeks.

"Hm? Me?" The Old Man finally sits down, his knees crossed as he finds a good place to sit. "Oh, you can call me Malam."

Finishing the apple, you wipe your mouth of the juices.

"Old Man, you seem a wise and learned fellow."

"Oh, I suppose..." Malam rocks back, cradling his walking stick.

"I thank you for helping me."

"Twas nothing," he dismissively waves. "Nature grants strength to those she finds deserving..."

Looking you over, he strokes his beard. "So, now that you are fed, what are your plans now, traveler? Do you know where you are?"

" I was captured, and abandoned. Now I am lost."

You look around your. Though your consumption of the mushroom soup clouded your vision at first, the effects seem to have begun to fade after eating the apple. Still, the forest's horizon is a brilliant shade of yellow with each leaf reflecting an orange hue like gold. You try to clear your vision, but still the overwhelming radiance seems to warp the forest. It's almost as if the forest is in its own ethereal world; you dismiss the effects, for you are still weary.

"For all I know the bandits may have ransacked and killed the entire village."

You see your wife from her younger years, greeting you as you lug back a log; her smile is brilliant...so beautiful. And your children: not the young adults they are today, but them as toddlers, helping hang laundry and chasing the village cats around. They were always smiling...

"I may return to them, but I am not strong enough to save them..."

You look at your hands. For years, they have crafted. Homes, tools, and furniture...but never a weapon. Never have your hands know the prowess of a blade or the overwhelming power of the arcane.

Malam nods, listening intently to your story.

"Tell me, traveler. What do you think a man's calling in life is?"

    "A man's calling?"

You see your family again, gathered around your meager pot. Your wife sings with the children as they learn to cook through the same rhyme your mother taught you.

"I would think protecting his family would be ideal..."

    Malam nods.

"A family is indeed important. A wolf without his pack does not last long..."

You think for a moment. Your thoughts drift to your crafting. Sure, you're family was wonderful and fulfilling, but seeing others like you living their lives in happiness with your chairs and tools; that provided a different joy. Not the familial fulfillment, but accomplishment.

"I believe it is a man's duty to leave a lasting impression on those around him, provide for and protect his fellows."

Yes; the truest accomplishments from your life were the ones that you helped make with others. A family, a barn, dinner; all were equal.

"For years I have tried my best to do this for my family and townsfolk..." You go quiet for a moment. "But I fear today I have failed them.."

    Malam smiles.

"Your years have done you well, traveler."

Looking back to the forest, the strange lights that seem to dance across your vision refuse to fade. From the corner of your eye, you see a deer like a wisp of smoke prance and weave through the trees. You are awestruck.

    "What is this place?"

    Malam, his legs trembling, stands.

    "This...is the Felwild."

"This Felwild.. I have no idea how I came to be here..." You have never seen anything like this in your life. The trees seem to be made of precious metals glowing in a constant stream of sun. Malam offers you a hand as you stand, taking in the forest.

"Those who wander into the Felwild do not do so by accident." Malam waves his stick, causing a stream of white smoke to flow. The smoke quickly rises, churns into a sphere, then expands into the shape of a bird before flying off into the light. "They are called to serve."

"Would I even survive if I tried to make my way back?" You ask.

"Surviving isn't part of the question; it's more that you'll be lost..forever. The only ones who know how to navigate these wilds are those who are called: the druids and shamans that walk the land." He lowers his gaze, leveling with you. "For now, you need to come to terms with what is asked of you."

He raises his staff out, the light of the forest solidifying into a wind. The wind dances and twists into a tree blossoming, a badger feasting upon a viper, and a plethora of other creatures that rush around you, prancing gently before fleeing into a single ball of light at the tip of Malam's stick.

"Though it is strange to ask this of you who have no knowledge for these matters, I must ask, rather bluntly: You are called; do you answer?" He raises the ball of light at you. "I must warn you, however..." His calm facade grows stern. "Nature does not usually take no for an answer, most of the time."
    >> Anonymous 07/31/11(Sun)03:16 No.15765419
he knows full well that if he ever wants to see his wife and children, he must comply. it may take a lifetime, and he may never see them again, but he knows he must do this.

"If i have been called to serve, it is my duty to comply"

he puts the thoughts of his villiage behind. mastering the trials before him may be his only way out. he knows he must put his everything into this
    >> Anonymous 07/31/11(Sun)03:17 No.15765423
Called? If nature doesn't take no for an answer, then i can only say yes and pray that one day the Feywild will let me go home.

You weigh your options for a moment.

If Malam is indeed telling the truth, then nature indeed wants you. For what, hell if I know. If I refuse, gods know what'll happen. Lost forever? If I get to see my family again, then this is my best chance.

"If I have been called to serve, it is my duty to comply."

Malam grimaces at your sudden resignation. Putting his staff into the ground, he leans against it trying to console you.

"Listen, I know it's tough, but nature doesn't like to coddle. Truth be told, I had a similar experience, and the choice was a tad forced, I'll admit, but..." He raises his staff again, pressing the staff against your head. "...you'll learn to see."

And that concludes the thread of how nature can be a dick. Thanks for posting with me, anons.
