    409 KB Fairy Warband Quest 7 - Entire Quest Recap Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/12/11(Sat)22:16 No.16931683
You are Trixie Buttercup, fairy warband leader. Fairies are made of magic and immune to harm from all sources but magic and magnets. Upon their deaths, fairies burst into sparkles that other fairies can use to increase their own power.

Your warband has evicted an opposing group from their tree, which generates fairies. After moving in, you researched putting fairy sparkles into beetles, a queen bee, and a drone (rendering them magical and obedient, and causing minor physical changes). You also began to dig straight down, after suspecting that the source of the tree's magic was underground. Aside from certain setbacks (a giant, murderous worm being the primary one) the magic hole has led to some important resources (a medium sized magic mushroom farm and a great deal of magic giant worm leather). The actual source of the magic, if there is one other than the water, is still a mystery.

Recently, on a patrol, you and Wibble stumbled upon a group of fairies that was weak enough for you to fight singlehandedly. However, in the confusion, one of the defeated fairies killed one of her fallen allies, absorbed half of the group's sparkles, and escaped. Her current location is unknown.

Picking up and absorbing a sparkle now costs one movement point. Picking up and storing a sparkle costs two, and requires a container.

Also, I fucked up some upgrades. You'll not that in codex.jpg Twitter and Wibble now have slightly lower stats and more spells.

As usual, chat is #fairyquest in irc.thisisnotatrueending.com. Wiki page is http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Fairy_Warband_Quest.

I am restarting, so don't expect any posts from me for a while.

So, how big are sparkles relative to fairies?
Like marble size, large rocks, whatever?

I only ask because I want to know if we're going to wind up with literal mountains of sparkles that we'll need teams of wheelbarrow pushing slaves to cart back home.

    >> Anonymous 11/12/11(Sat)22:41 No.16931958
Okay, so, first order of business: Someone from an unknown location spotted our living area and got away. we have to double or triple the traps, and start running all of our people through them at least once a day so they can maneuver through our trapfields without being fucked.

After that, increase our watches from the top of the tree, and move beetle guards up top of the mining site instead of down below. Ensure the bees have enough honey and whatever to survive, and forge more of those sticky nets, hopefully using the bee glue we stole to make 'em extra sticky.

Am I forgetting any of our irons in the fire here?
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/12/11(Sat)23:00 No.16932147
    >>16931958
Bloomstar takes over trying to standardize the traps a bit and running everyone through them.

You have some sticky nets already. You prepare some more.

You withdraw the third beetle from the magic hole, getting a nervous reaction from the diggers.

The bees are doing fine on their own. They gather nectar, and have about half a hexagon of honey stored up. Their hive is fully enclosed except for the entrance, now.

After a couple of days, you feel a lot more secure. It might be overkill, since the missing fairy hasn't shown her face.

    >Am I forgetting any of our irons in the fire here?
I don't think so. The only other resources I can think of are drug mushrooms, glowy mushrooms, and large bland edible mushrooms.

Alright, well, that's pretty much all we can do. We could try arranging for scouting parties, but wibble and trixie are our only real candidates for that. And sending them out alone or in a pair is a bit risky.

Also, I don't want trixie to be away form the main band of fairies to go scouting, something important might happen.

What about sending wibble and the things, along with say three girlz, to scout? the gurlz are of course to use as distractions for the rest to get away.

we should send the scouts in the general direction the intruders came from, and tell them to return within two days, or if they see anything, whichever comes first.

Due to low girlzpower, you decide to sit tight. The escaped fairy might think of the encounter with you as the lucky break of her life, and may not want anything further to do with you. If she isn't with a bigger group, the issue is resolved. Probably.

You move the biggest pod to the swimming pool. A couple of days later, it hatches. Five fairies, confused, but healthy looking. If you had to guess, they don't seem any better off than the hatchlings you're used to. The pod and the fairies look healthier than Twitter and Flitter and their pod upon hatching, though.

(tiebreaker cancelled on account of votes)

You give the new girlz the standard speech. One immediately attacks another, and they grapple to a standstill. The one who is technically on the losing end points out that either of them might end up winning. The winner grudgingly agrees, and they pick a random victim to collectively squish.

The extra workers mean fewer shifts for everyone (except for your original group, which is more or less only obligated to guard the entrance). Slightly more gets done, and everyone is nice and relaxed.

The only difficulty is minor. The bottom of the magic hole is knee deep in water, and difficult to dig in.

    You have one sparkle.

    >If so, this could be a path to seeing all our minions armed and potentially even armored.

    oooh! oooh!

whatEVER we do with sparkles, reserve like five for trixie. then have us go and practice tossing fistfulls of multiple knives at targets, and knives in quick succession, and see what works best and most accurately. Basically, training ranged backstab and attacks with throwing knives here for trixie, if such things work.
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/13/11(Sun)00:25 No.16933093
    >>16933041
Blinding flash is a flash of light that makes a fairy blind (and therefore unable to do things like attack, move to specific locations, etc).

Counter spell causes the target's next offensive spell to self-target. It does not inform the target of this.

Mirror image makes an illusory copy of the fairy that can't make sounds or interact with objects. The illusion becomes very obvious if it attempts to do so.

    >>16933044
With a little bit of practice, you manage to throw two knives at different targets. You can do it pretty accurately. Summoning new knives still takes a moment, though.

    >>16933093
well, that's sorted. now all that's left to do is A. start that whole "transplant the youngest pod we can find to the water to see the fairy mutants it makes" plan

and B. we should have new girlz make some small boats, buckets, and rope for our miners, so they can treadge up dirt from the bottom.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/11(Sun)00:37 No.16933215
    >>16933192
also, why not use some of those ropes and buckets to haul the excess dirt up to the surface, and start making the first few feet of our tree a smooth, unclimbable clay surface.
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/13/11(Sun)00:47 No.16933298
With some work by Bloomstar and a lot of hauling, a system goes into place that moves water out of the hole very slightly faster than it fills up. Work progresses, at a reduced pace.

    Then there's another cave in.

It doesn't trap anyone, or leave anyone in a deeper hole, or really do anything that negatively impacts anyone. The wall of the deepest section of the magic hole simply drops down six inches and disintegrates into a pile of dirt.

    >>16933215
    This isn't how dirt works.

The excess is piling up around the entrance as naturally as possible.
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/13/11(Sun)00:47 No.16933306
Also, you move the smallest recognizable pod to the swimming pool. This has no immediate, noticeable effect.

    >>16933298
Okay, we might have to take the miners off of mining rotation until we can figure out a way through the aquifer. either dig around it, or figure out some kind of... tube that we could push through it. Actually, just put the miners on a tunnel outwards until we can reach the edge of the groundwater. or we get bored. whenever we need manpower, we'll take it from the tunnelers, since they are now a not-so-important duty.

A tunnel results in a second cave-in, requiring a second digging crew to dig out the first. Bloomstar proposes wooden supports, which slow things down considerably, but allow a horizontal tunnel to be built.

The third cave-in is by far the least impressive. About a foot into the tunnel, the floor begins to slowly sink. It is now completely underwater, and doesn't respond to buckets.

Some careful tunneling around the collapse leads to something unexpected. The diggers strike a hard surface. It's smooth and cold, and none of the fairies recognize it. It's also very big. The digging crews try to go around it in two directions with no success.

A little bit more exploratory digging leads to a crack.

well, I guess we're going to dig out the massive shiny thing and see just what it is.

also, next pod that comes along, claim all the fairies until we have 20 gurlz, and then kill the rest. try to use the shard we broke off to kill one of them, see if it works for that.

Leave the rock intact. It probably powers the tree.
We need to either build a compass to test if this stuff is magnetic or find some metal.
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/13/11(Sun)02:03 No.16933828
You order two tunnels to encircle the shiny thing.

The shiny thing is smooth, but irregularly shaped. The tunnels slope upwards slightly to avoid the groundwater. The diggers trip over several shards that are separated already, ranging from finger sized to leg sized. One by one, they are hoisted out and deposited by the mushrooms and the swimming pool.

The shiny thing isn't attracted to itself, and you know that is how magnets work. You'd identify it as a rock if you had to, but you've never seen one like this before, so you could be wrong.

    Guys.

    guys.

I think we just hit stoneage fairies. let's see if we can stab any of the new budlings with a spear tipped with this stuff, next time some hatch.

Can we get our fairies to practice fighting one another, having the more experienced ones show the less experienced ones tricks, or is that just what frolicking is?

I honestly think, until we can figure out more about it, we should just leave the hole-digging be at the moment. We have no clear goal for what we want to do yet, and we seem to have the information we wanted (where the magic came from).

I think what we need to do now is find out what we want as a more long-term goal. We've almost got the number of girlz we want. Once we do, what are we going to do with the sparkles we start getting? Just leveling our skills up, or are we going to try more experiments?

Do we want to learn more about our immediate area? More than just close-to-the-tree scouting parties, but perhaps long-range scouting & information gathering.

I also propose we start some competitive games amongst the girlz. We can start picking out any of them that have specific traits - i.e. the speediest, the most cunning, the one with the quickest wits.

I'm also curious about what would happen with indirect/direct interaction between the magic shard and a sparkle.

well, one of the reasons we GOT up to 20 gurlz is so we can send out longer term scouting parties. With wibble and a few gurlz and maybe the things, was my suggestion.

And, after we upgrade our skills a bit, we should save sparkles for a caravan trip to freeport. we can sell our kick-ASS wormleather clothes and dewskins there, hopefully. or at least scope out the market for what is and is not available.

I wonder if we need a sparkle to pay for a bag-beetle's week stay too.

Hence why I propose the games. If we can pick out 2-3 of the quickest and smartest, and sparkle them up a bit, they may develop movement at a similar rate to Trixie. If we can get a bunch of fast fairies, even if they're all a bit frail, we'd have a good party for quick, quiet scouting.

Bloomstar picks out a medium sized shard and jams the sparkle into it, after a few false starts. It doesn't seem to have any effect for a moment, but when you give up, there's a moment of silence, and you hear it. The shard is humming quietly. Looking at it again, it seems a little bit more solid. Sniffing it leads to a similar conclusion.

With the magic hole digging project on hold, you have some extra girls for miscellaneous labor

    >(1) use the magic worm skin to make armor and shields
Worm leather seems to be of questionable value for this. You make a few vests, but tests show they don't stop fairy punches.

    >(2) make bags out of the magic worm skin (for our scouting party).
After a couple of days, you have more bags than fairies.

    >(3) make some arrowheads/spearheads out of the magic rock pieces and test them.
This works, but the arrowheads and spearheads don't last very long when actually used. They're also more or less harmless, despite the smell. They're less magicy smelling than the water on their own, which didn't hurt fairies.

    >give the girls the idea to make chairs, tables, and bed on their off time.
You have one room hollowed out of the tree that you can just barely squeeze all of your fairies into, and a ground floor that is dirty and muddy. Where do you plan to put everything?

    >also move some of the glowing mushroom to the rooms we use
    Done.

    >also make a strong door/lock for the tree fortress
Bloomstar heads a committee to chop a block of wood into roughly the right shape. It can be wedged into the doorway in reverse using silk rope. Tests show it to be impossible to pull out from the outside.

    >couple of rope/wood ladder the can be us from the tree branches to pull and/or have anyone climb up.
Done already. It hasn't come up yet, though.

    >can we put SPARKLES into BAGS without the BAGS absorbing the SPARKLES?
Every attempt to put sparkles into something other than a fairy has involved a lot of conscious effort. It won't happen by mistake.

I never thought to ask; are this room and the hallways in the tree something that was hollowed out by other fairies or an animal, or is it all a naturally occurring hole in the tree? Does the wood in here seem healthy? Do fairies known enough about plant life to know how much damage to the inner tree like this would actually potentially kill the tree?

Somewhere just a bit above. Find a place that allows for a quite large platform. Something big enough for all our fairies (and perhaps even assume a few more when measuring) can sprawl out comfortably on warm summer nights. We can help camouflage it with drapes of leaves or something.
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/13/11(Sun)03:56 No.16934511
You start construction on your expansion.

The floor is made of wood slats, arranged radially. Some twigs lashed together support the roof, made of more leaves, which can be swapped out easily, as well as a camouflage layer of leaves below the floor. The structure is a little bit suspicious, but from the forest floor, it just looks like a clump of leaves. Any fairies who got close enough to see it would be spotted by the sentries, regardless.

For convenience, the pretty rocks stay inside, as well as the magic rock pieces.

It's more difficult work than the usual, but spirits are high, mostly because everyone is looking forward to not being stuck in a tiny room to sleep. After the structure is functional, it quickly fills up with piles of fluff, piles of fluff attached to objects, a feather, wood blocks of various sizes and shapes, and fairies.

You have a hatched pod to (retroactively) deal with, and another on the way soon.

    - Dyes! Order the girlz to have a competition to see who could store colors properly (easy storing, long shelf time, vibrant colors) with a sparkle as prize. Named faeries should not enter, and noone can ask Bloomstar. Faeries are colorful, why should their items and home be bland colored?

    - Give Twinkle a two-hander of her choice that does not exclude her from using her Backstab (does Reach hinder this?) from about six sparkles from Moonbubles. If any remained from the six, craft armor pieces for Twinkle (bracers/helmet/breastplate/greaves)
