Karuchan Penal Legion, "Untouchables"
Karucha is an arid world, home to rugged mountain ranges rising above vast wastelands of scrub plants and shifting dunes. Most of the planet is inhabited only by primitive nomads who raid one other with sword and musket, carrying out ancient blood-feuds. Mining facilities dot the planet, each surrounded by dense, ramshackle settlements.
Several Karuchan regiments have been raised over the centuries, but the Untouchables stand apart. The rigid clan systems of the great waste carry on in the mining cities, with extensive filial obligations and blood-debts. Mine employment is doled otu based on clan affiliation, with the most prestigious lines claiming the most lucrative positions. The lowest of the low are Untouchables: individuals cast out by their families for violating some taboo, or shattered clans too weak to to claim any but the worst and most dangerous jobs. Conscripts to the regular Karuchan regiments refuse to serve alongside these Untouchables, and so the Penal Legion was created. For many Untouchables, the offworld dangers of the Imperial Guard are preferable to the slow death of the mines: digging radioactive ore by hand, rigging explosives in unstable tunnels, or worse. |
