    What's TG's favorite IG regiment?

Pic related: my faves. The Tallarn Desert Raiders. been collecting these guys for nearly a decade. Love the fluff, love the models, I just wish forgeworld would have made a full squad and maybe a few characters.

Aye, I hate how FW. just half-asses a bit of tallarn and are calling it quits for now.
They should do the others too, like Steel Legion, Mordian, Valhallan and the like.

Tallarn are boss, a regiment of humans who held off an entire traitor legion AFTER their planet was virus bombed. Best tankers in the galaxy. Too bad Lucien Soulban's book dropped the ball halfway through. Opened very interesting doors into the tribal society of Tallarn's people, only to anticlimax with "oh, then tyranids came. Sorry reader."

Actually, they're painted like the Royal Irish Constabulary.

Mordians are fucking awesome. They are the definition of discipline and grit. They don't go in for flash in the pan. They don't believe in separate dress and combat uniforms. They go to battle in their dress uniforms, and woe betide the poor sot whose uniform is dirty at the end of a battle. That poor sot had better pray he's dead.

I think you'll find their uniforms are rather generic for a napoleonic/dress uniform, with an element of stereotype Zapp Brannigan style space cadet. That is, a very simplified, futuristic, and archetypal version of an archaic fancy infantryman. They don't have the breast pockets or arm insignia of the US marine dress uniform, but they do have epaulets. They wear high boots instead of long pants. Blah blah. You could paint them, if you wanted, to look like a damn lot of armies from the last couple centuries.

The original didn't have a "gender roll" like that. It had a much more varied table for regimental recruitment restrictions, ranging from priesthood to convicts to subhumans to noble-first born to clones, with all-male and all-female on the list too. And with 10 being "roll again three times".

If you roll Fleet-based, you don't roll a homeworld. For Marines, you can to have multiple recruitment worlds, but if it's a IG regiment founded through those born and raised on ships in the void? No homeworld. You can say the Urban thing is just a descriptor of the ships, though. Almost cities in their own right, which 40k ships actually kind of are.

    >> Anonymous 12/02/11(Fri)03:39 No.17081575
    >>17081536
Not necessarily. If the men are appended to the Navy, they are Armsmen. If they are appended to the Guard, they are Guardsmen. The two branches are separate, and operate mostly under separate chains of command (except at the very highest echelons, such as a Warmaster and his general staff). Just because they're born on the ship doesn't make them part of the Captain's crew - see, for example, Tanith babbys.

But I think it's safe to assume that PDFs fall under IG command if an IG officer is around, and that militia would generally need to cooperate with IG or face the wrath of the Commissariat. Guard and Navy are segregated rigorously, and with good reason - so that the Horus Heresy can't happen again.

If I roll a 10 on the Loyalty Rating table (Heretical), what do I do if I roll For the Emperor or similar on the Creed table? Is it some kind of Alpha Legion IG?

Also, if I roll a 1 on the Nature of Recruitment table, doesn't that conflict with a lot of rolls on the Recruitment Criteria table? I could get a regiment of convicted nobles. Conversely, if I roll a 2-4 on Nature, and 41-45 on Criteria, that would lead to an elite regiment of subhumans.

    Name: Kamakan Sky Reavers
Insignia: a longsword and lasgun crossed, behind them is a white Pegasus on a black starfield

Planet Kamak was a jewel of a world, rolling hills and great plains where huge herds of Grox and native herbivores roamed freely. Noble Kamakan families, known as Sheperds, all originate from cattle-rustling nomad tribes that first settled the world, and even though they long abandoned the traditional lifestyle for city comforts, the Sheperd ideal of a noble leading his "flock" survived. When a Chaos incursion tore the world apart, noble families found themselves embroiled in a bitter civil war wherein age-old grudges between Sheperd clans flared up, fueled by Alpha Legion infiltration and manipulation. As the war raged on, Exterminatus became inevitable. The surviving Loyalist families gathered their flocks of commoners and fought a desperate struggle to the spaceport, holding advancing waves of cultists and traitor Astartes long enough to evacuate on trader barges and bulk haulers. It was from this crucible that the Sky Reavers were born.

Think Sabbat Crusade. Planet gets overrun with Alpha Legion and its supporters in a sector gone mad. Imperium's crusade to get it back strikes our homeworld. Fails to save it, decides to exterminatus. Nobility is taken away, becomes the rolled regiment. The forces that were stationed on the planet pre-Exterminatus are the forces the rolled regiment tags along with and fights alongside. Therefore, they fight by the side of those who fought and died to save our homeworld. That they failed does nothing to lessen that bond.

Most of the interior of the city-vessels have been painted with scenes of the lost homeworld, and shrines to the Emperor always include a small volume of soil from Karmac as a reminder of what the people has lost and what they are fighting for.

In the dying days of the Karmakian homeworld, a handful of military commanders received an urgent message from the most unlikely of sources. The Officio Assassinorium would be sending teams of assassins to "assist" in the evacuation of Karmak. Suddenly, bands of Alpha Legionnaires would disappear from auspexes. Spaceports would be cleared of any enemies. It seemed as if the very will of the Emperor demanded that Karmak be saved, in one form or another...

These days, it isn't unusual for the Officio to "assist" with difficult operations, usually clearing a path for the more direct tactics of the Rapture drop troopers. It also isn't unusual for the officio to "borrow" troopers and for them to return telling tales of fighting tyranids...

Soil is almost holy for the Karmakians. Most of it was ironically brought onto the ships by a would-be entrepreneur, who schemed to restart the agriculture of their homeworld in the holds of the ship. Nowadays, the soil is considered something of a relic. It isn't unheard of for troopers to wear small vials around their necks when they drop. "Don't lose your ground" is considered something of a blessing.

    Name: Hansa Mobile Infantry
The busy Forge World of Hansa III houses its citizens in vast mobile dredge-manufactorums, continent-sized mining platforms that tirelessly traverse the planet's endless ocean, gathering minerals and petroleum from the ocean floor, and building the great macro cannon batteries that adorn Navy ships in this subsector. During the conflict that tore through the neighboring Karmac system, Hansa also became a battleground. Several of the great wake-cities were invaded and befouled by Chaos incursion, but because of the great strategic value of Hansa to the Imperium, Exterminatus was not an option. The manufactorums were reclaimed, inch by inch, every victory bought with blood. Still, the retaken wake-cities are now seen as haunted places, civilians reluctant to settle the deepest levels, whispers of monstrous creatures preying on miners abound.

Following the evacuation of Karmac, the survivor fleet made a stop at Hansa to resupply. At that point, a lare detachment of Sky Sheperds was seconded to the Hansan Mobile 'infantry to recoup the losses they sustained in the fight to retake their homes.

While initially tension between the regiments was high, Hanseans viewing the Karmacans as primitive, stuck-up savages and the Karmacans looking down at the taciturn, individualistic Hanseans, combat operations quickly showed the two regiments complemented each other well, the Karmacans providing leadership and exemplary bravery, and the Hanseans offering their well-maintained and masterfully crafted weapons as well as their experience in cityfighting. It was also found that several Karnacans greatly enjoyed the Hansean national pastime: surfing.

From a planet that's barely in the life zone of the ever present red giant star, the orginal inhabitants were dumped in the slim line of liveable area on the horizon of the tidaly locked star. Left with only basic agriculture and yearly drops the planet has indefinitely and sometimes forcefully kept at a rudimentry tech level.
The roles that were adopted by ability have evolved distinct racial lineage in the millennia long use of the planet. With new drop offs being sorted into these groups. The biggest and meanest are the scrappers, who make ends meet in pit fights throughout the settlements. The regiment thithe is almostly entirely scrapper born or raised, as much because of the fame and money to made if they return as it is the attempt to limit they're numbers

As a result of their forced technological disability, owning any kind of fire arm is seen as a badge honor. As being able to own a firearm of a privileged few, and as a result the culture is reverent of them. Despite being a poor world, they are one of the galaxys leading gun modification import locations. Being a penal colony these orders are very closely regulated by the imperium, and thus handled (very lucrativly) by the adeptus mechanis. Which have a close relationship with the leaders of the world at any given time.

Name: Perfidious' Finest (colloquial: Perfidious Desert Scrappers)
Left to fend for themselves with scarcely any technology, the residents of the prison colony of Perfidious VI established a feudal order. In time, the warbands of the endless deserts of Perfidious and the enormous gladiatorial games that were held annually to establish patterns of dominance among the warlords (the prize being control of the few sources of potable water on the planet), came to the attention of the Adeptus Mechanicus. More specifically, the Adeptus Mechanicus personnel who maintain and reside on the orbital station that circles Perfidious IV. Magos Victor Alchenon proposed to the Administratum that the tithe of warriors that was taken from Perfidious could be greatly improved in quality with a few simple bionic modifications. Now, the winners of the gladiatorial tournaments are taken away to the Dragon's Eye (as the penal worlders call the station), augumented with bionic limbs and given fine-quality weapons, and formed into a regiment famous for brutality and close-quarters violence. The regiment has seen use in extensive hive-fighting campaigns, leading to a high number of hive-combat experienced veterans.

    Karuchan Penal Legion, "Untouchables"

Karucha is an arid world, home to rugged mountain ranges rising above vast wastelands of scrub plants and shifting dunes. Most of the planet is inhabited only by primitive nomads who raid one other with sword and musket, carrying out ancient blood-feuds. Mining facilities dot the planet, each surrounded by dense, ramshackle settlements.

Several Karuchan regiments have been raised over the centuries, but the Untouchables stand apart. The rigid clan systems of the great waste carry on in the mining cities, with extensive filial obligations and blood-debts. Mine employment is doled otu based on clan affiliation, with the most prestigious lines claiming the most lucrative positions. The lowest of the low are Untouchables: individuals cast out by their families for violating some taboo, or shattered clans too weak to to claim any but the worst and most dangerous jobs. Conscripts to the regular Karuchan regiments refuse to serve alongside these Untouchables, and so the Penal Legion was created. For many Untouchables, the offworld dangers of the Imperial Guard are preferable to the slow death of the mines: digging radioactive ore by hand, rigging explosives in unstable tunnels, or worse.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/11(Fri)06:26 No.17082327
    >>17082320
The Karuchan Untouchables, while technically a penal legion, have their pride; they are hardy and vicious fighters, seeking an glorious death which will redeem them in their forefathers' eyes. Many are equipped only with primitive stub weapons, scimitars and knives. Notoriously adept at close-quarters fighting in tunnels and underhive warrens, they hurl explosives recklessly and fall upon their stunned and disorganized foes with bare steel in hand.

The Untouchables gained particular note in the purging of Tempest Hive VII, a Forgeworld complex wracked with unchecked daemonic infestation. In an 800-day campaign, the Untouchables led the systematic assault and slaughter of Tempest Hive's heretical underhive population, saving the foundries and refineries that lay above from destruction by orbital bombardment. The mutated creatures they faced are the subject only of whispered rumors; but the few Untouchables that survived Tempest Hive emerged carrying the blades of their brothers-in-arms, jealously-hoarded artifacts sanctified by the blood of comrades and enemies alike. Some claim that the grateful Adeptus Mechanicus gifted select heroes of the Untouchables with certain artifact weapons, but these rumors remain unverified.

And the culture as a whole knows through the imperial cult that chaos daemons are the root of all the behavior that landed them in the penal system. This rooted belief has become so deep seated in third society that they violently oppose daemons in all forms. From an purposefully comfort deprived life style or gutting (another) slannesi cultist plant in their block, the scrappers have a hatred of chaos that far outweighs their love of the emperor.

    CADIANS FUCK YEAH

I'm not talking Cadian world Knockoff, or that fucking Dacian mis brand. CADIANS. People whose entire culture is a genderless homogenized machine of war!
Cadians are taught basic principles of acedemics and technical skills from an early ages, and begin to utilize them in early stages of their development in adolecense. Their form of "training" is similar to Space Marines. When they white-shields go out for an exercise they put the recruits in harms way. when they graduate They become part of the real Army. Some are pressed into deploy able regiments. They are centered around war. A Culture where patterns of cammo are common fashions. You don't comment on the girls nice tight jeans, you look at her and go " That bitch is wearing Flectarn, she's got some class!"

Not only all this but they are DAMN good at their jobs too. They are the only force in the Imperium that spends so much time killing chaos daemons second only to Daemon Hunters. They are experts at urban warfare, masters of entrenching. Their cities are laid out in a diamond layout so they are harder to advance in. Their tactics may be agressive, but not suicidal like commonly portrayed. Elysians get a good reputation for having Modern tactics, but they do what Cadians do on a smaller scale and with more time and money.

The kicker to all of this? After 13 BLACK CRUSADES Cadia is still self sufficient! Their industry pumps out the best warmachines barring Mars, they have a respectable agriculture, they have refused Space Marines to use their worlds for recruiting multiple times! AND they STILL hold the line!

    CADIA FUCK YEAH

So, using this chart and rolling with it, I got the following:

    >Regiment classification
    Penal Legion

    >Homeworld
    Forge World

    >Home World Predominant Terrain
    Airless

    >Regiment core units
    Infantry Regiment

    >Specialization
    Ranged Combat

    >Loyalty rating
Undisciplined: Will follow the Emperor but don't expect them to bow to authority figures.

    >Recruitment criteria
    All female.

    >Nature of recruitment
Elite tithe: The best of the best of the planet are sent to the regiment

    >Special Equipment
    Modified Weaponry

    >Regiment Creed
Steel Over Flesh: This regiment believes the way to victory is through machine augumentation.

    >Friends
    Adepta Sororitas

    >Enemies
    The Tau

So, apparently it's a penal regiment of elite female cyborg soldiers from an airless Forgeworld that dislike authorities, is armed with modified weaponry and has a focus on ranged warfare.
They are also Best Friends Forever with the SoB and their preferred enemies are the Tau...

So they're from an airless forge world...maybe they tend to have cybernetics that make them resistant to vacuum or toxic atmospheres? Like a breathing apparatus, and maybe the sergeants get void-hardened skin or whatever. Of course, this is an IG penal legion, so their artificial lungs are probably third-hand or worse; they probably have to remove them from their own dead and crippled just to implant them into new recruits.

Maybe their homeworld makes flamers or refines promethium or somesuch for the Sororitas. (The unbreathable atmosphere makes industrial accidents with flammable materials less catastrophic--for the facilities, anyway.) Maybe the penal legion itself is modeled somehow after Repentias, which is why they're all female. Or maybe they're all rejects from SoB training.

Name? The Last Breaths. Or Last Gaspers.

    How about Breath Takers?

The Caulex Breath Takers. An elite regiment based off the crater-ridden planetoids of Caulex III, IV and X, the Breath Takers are recruited
from the ranks of female convicts from Forge Worlds around the subsector. The most battle-hardened of these criminals, tech-heretics and smugglers sent to mine the airless rocks of Caulex as punishment are further augumented with arcane void-adapters, gas filters and
implanted oxy-tanks that allow for extended action in void and toxic environments.

Wearing black skinsuits and helmets decorated with white skulls, the Breath Takers are frequently called upon by a nearby convent of Battle Sisters to augument their ranks. While the Sisters view the convicts with disdain, a certain form of respect for the Breath Takers' combat prowess and skill with melta weaponry has been grudgingly awarded to them.

I just used my dice at home rather than the /tg/ one, and this is what I got:

    rolled 4: Imperial Guard
    rolled 35: Infantry Regiment
    rolled 10: Hive Warfare specialists
    rolled 1: Overzealous
    rolled 6: All-female.

Holy shit, did I just roll up hive fighting wanna-be-Sorroritas? Because that is what it fucking looks like.

Oh, wait, looks like there are more charts to roll on! Wheee!

roll 44: Feral World. Okay, this can still work. They are just crazy barbarian hive fighters who die by the billions for big E...
roll 89: :| <---mfw I realize that my dice are now trolling me. An airless feral world of hive fighting specialists. WTF!?!

Rolling on allies and enemies chart...

roll 47: Adepta Sororitas. Okay, this is the first roll to show internal consistancy with the themes of the others.
roll 26: KRUMP DEM HUMIEZ!! (enemy is orks)

Seeing as how I already rolled, I am going to ignore modified charts.....
    Nature of recruitment
    roll 7: Standard tithe.
    roll 93: Modified weaponry
roll 41: We fight for the Emperor. (good. another internally consistent one.)

So I have an infantry army of suicidally devout barbarian chicks from an airless rock that fight orks in hive worlds alongside the Sisters of Battle with their own customized guns.

    >An airless feral world of hive fighting specialists. WTF!?!

They come from a long-abandoned mining world. All valuable resources were strip-mined from the planet millennia ago, leaving the atmosphere thin and toxic. The planetary government picked up sticks and abandoned the planet, stripping everything valuable they could on the way out. This did not include hundreds of thousands of serf laborers left in the hab-blocks and tunnels.

The descendants of these workers still live there today, in savage, feral tribes that fight over the scarce resources in the tunnels. Ancient, jury-rigged atmo scrubbers are barely kept in operation by hereditary shamans; and these pockets of breathable atmo are the subject of brutal wars of survival. Tribals grow to adulthood eating the vermin-like local scavengers, and sometimes the flesh of their enemies.

More than one regimental recruiter has made this world a waystation on their conscription tours, its bestial inhabitants being its last valuable resource.

Wow. you made my crazy-nonsensical rolls have a cool and slightly rational backstory. thank you. The 6 for "overly zealous" and the reason to fight roll giving "For the Emperor" need representation somehow, so we need a fanatical Imperial Cult in there somewhere as the last vestiges of society. Maybe a Sororitas convent is the sole Imperial presence on the planet. Explains their allies and devotion to Imperial Creed.

Also, deep in the under-tunnels and abandoned mineshafts from long ago lurk ork colonies, the last vestigial remnants from a forgotten invasion from ages past. That gives us our source of anti-orkyness.

So... All female captive Skitarii snipers (Forge world, cyberized, modified weaponry, long range) rebels (against Omnissiah, perhaps? Or just against AdMech?) who had to put on explosive collars because their crimes are simply too heavy just to warrant an execution.

The SoBs like them because they are an all female group (soul sistah), that once helped a free a besieged relic recovery Sororita team carrying out a Sainted SoB body out of a Tau-conquered Imperial world. Their modified ranged weapons helped against Tau's superior ranged weapons. Their willingness to peel off the explosive seal on their collar voluntarily, just to gain tactical advantage (elite pride), endeared them to the fanatic SoBs.

Not to mention their hate against Omnissiah (it's an Ecclesiarchy sanctioned heresy, but that doesn't mean the SoBs liked it).
