Still reeling from this latest vision, you still dont immediately recognize that you are being spoken too. "Justinian, we need deployment orders, Commander. There wont be any Duchy troops on the wall, as all of them have been tapped for the initial wave of the counter attack."

You vaguely notice a lone outline against the heavy clouds above, then feel a light burn, as a jolt of power arcs through the laden air to connect with the side of your head. You let out a rather undignified, surprised yelp, and turn to face your wife and aide "What were you saying Sansa, I seem to have lost my focus."

Sansa heaves a sigh "We need deployment orders, Commander. The wall is completely our responsibility in this battle."

and last but not least your current forces. Lennis isnt deployable, as you have yet to meet up with him. So, which battalion goes where, and where will your retinue members go?

I would suggest placing deadeyes and rangers with a few legionaries on the higher sections of the wall. The elevation should improve their range and penetration. For the main part of the wall we should evenly space the rest of the ranged units that aren't on the higher parts of the wall along its length. The remaining legionarys and centurians should be in position to take the front line off the hands of the ranged units if the enemy reaches the walls.

In regards to our retinue, I say Laelith on the north part of the wall, Cat on the bottom and us and Lena in the middle. Sansa can stick with the deadeyes and the rest can be spread out to fill in gaps.

I am thinking of placing our arcanists fairly evenly on the main section of the wall. Laelith and Sansa in the north corner where the wall turns, us and Catalina in the center, Lena and in the south corner where the wall turns (along with Bellatrix).

The ranged mercs should hang with our ranged units on the main section of the wall and the direct combat mercs should be next to our front line units on the main parts of the wall.

Also, as Pax has reminded us in the IRC, Lena is still sickish. It might be best for her to sit this out so she doesn't get worse.

You think for a bit before replying "I want the Deadeyes and Rangers on the elevated sections of wall. Cornelius, split your battalion to defend them in the event of our foes reaching the walls. Finian, your battalion and the Zentas Snipers will take the section of wall above the gate, and Gaius' battalion and myself will defend your battalions should our foes attempt to go over the gate. I want the Redsteel Elites to watch the southern wall segment, and the Dyrol Myrmidons the northern. the rest of you are to wait in reserve inside the wall. I dont want heavy casualties, so I may very well switch out battalions during the battle to keep those to a minimum." You pause to breath as captains begin moving to notify their soldiers "The elementalist cadre will spread along the wall to provide support. Laelith, you will deploy with the Myrmidons, Sansa the Deadeyes. Catalina you will deploy south of me, but before the tower at the corner. Have the golems you created at sea with you. Lena and Bellatrix are to deploy with the Redsteel Elites." The remaining troops salute, and move out to follow your orders.

It is still an hour or so before dawn when the glamor covering the initial wave drops. Your troops are in place, but you know that the sally force wont be fully prepared until the sun wont be in their eyes when they charge. At the fore is a veritable horde of Felixsian skirmishers, clad in leather armor, and wielding axes and circle shields for the most part. A handful of them carry grappling hooks, and a few more strange items that resemble single rungs from ladders.

Behind them charge several battalions of Elven light infantry, all wielding paired short swords, glinting with the yellowish hue of mithia. You arent certain, but the four obelisks you can now see behind the elven battalions must be preventing you from seeing past them.

"My magesight is distorted, but going by what I think the numbers are, there are two battalions of human longbowmen directly behind those obelisks, I cant see past that." Lena announces to you as the archers prepare to fire. You simply nod in response, all you have to do is hold out until the other commanders are ready to sally forth, which could be by dawn if you signal for it now.
    >> Maximus 01/03/12(Tue)22:17 No.17417750
We definitely need to test out what those obelisks do ahead of time if we can. I suggest we try to earth elementalism one and knock it over or something. Perhaps have some of our best ranged troops shoot at the human archers if they can to see if they can shoot through the obelisk line.

For now, have our ranged units start peppering the incoming forces and have our elementalists go wild on the elven units.

You belt out "First volley into the skirmishers, second behind the obelisks, at will past that!!" as you attempt to focus some stone spikes at one of the central obelisks.

As the first volley streaks into the felixsians, your stone spike glances off your targeted obelisk. You know why, some elementalist behind the thing is opposing your efforts. You attempt to strike at the obelisk again and again as the second and third volleys streak into the horde of felixsians, felling many of them, but not enough to prevent them from reaching the wall. All around you see the other arcanists focusing their energies, clearly preparing for a massively devastating volley once the enemy is closer.

A brief check of the felixsians with your stonesense allows you to number them now that they are thinned out. Less reassuring than being able to number the beasts is how the clouds seem to be moving closer to the ground in some areas for no apparent reason. However, before you can puzzle out a reason for that particular abnormality the felixsians begin winding up their grappling hooks as they charge, seemingly heedless of the arcane crescendo taking place on the walls.

"TO THE WALLS!! GIVE THEM NO FOOTHOLD, NO HOPE!!!" you bellow as the centurions about you surge forward. As you hit the wall, the felixsians begin to throw their grappling hooks. Jets of arcane energy propel the things upwards, and the rope seems to spool out endlessly from the base of it. With a great burst of arcane energy the things impact on the wall, and bury themselves deep within.

You are unimpressed, however, and lead the unleashing of a great torrent of arcane power, nearly halving the remaining skirmishers as they hit the walls. Ropes are swiftly cut, though they take about twice the effort that is needed to get through them. What is truly disheartening is the fact that the severed rope begins to spool out from the tail of the hook itself, and it quickly becomes obvious that the hooks are eating away at the wall, using what they consume to create more rope. To your north, you see several ropes laden with uulanthi climbers severed mere seconds before the first soldier would have reached the top of the wall. "Cornelius seems to be in a sour mood today." Gaius observes, cutting down the first felixsian to reach the wall.

You nod and begin to slice at felixsians as they reach the top of the wall, more than a few of them taking hits from their own arrows that the battlements had been protecting you from. It quickly becomes obvious that despite the full length ropes on the hooks, no enemies will be attempting to scale the ropes to the top of the towers. A fall from that height clearly not a welcome prospect. You sigh... it would seem that your foes today are not idiots after all. This thought is punctuated by your decapitating another attacker that managed to climb a rope before it was severed.

Growling, you fire off some signal flares, redirecting your archers fire to the elves, and again try to destroy an obelisk with a stone spike. This time, by driving the largest spike you can create directly up into the thing. Needless to say, you succeed, the obelisk detonating in a brilliant shower of technicolor sparks, and the corpses of what arcanists had been standing behind it. Immediately roughly half of the battalion of archers Lena had successfully identified becomes visible, along with some of the arcanists behind the obelisks that are now clearly straining to maintain the field between them.

Then, a terrified wail emits from your south. There you see several long ladders deployed more like ramps than ladders judging by the angle, connecting to the wall. At two of the six or so that the elves deployed, stand Catalinas flesh golems, which are doing a wonderfully terrifying job of killing elves, your masked necromancer manning a third, her whip landing a killing blow with every strike. You spend a few minutes watching her work, slaughtering the increasingly frequent Felixsians with piteous ease as they clamber over the wall.

You look to the tower that Cornelius is manning in enough time to see how exactly the arcana the elves carry work as you continue to hack through foes absentmindedly. the elf slams the thing into the ground, and a sizeable amount of earth is drawn into the single-rung ladder, which launches forward at a blinding speed. Its now spiked forward tips embed themselves in the wall, and the elf that had been sprinting along with the rungs as they appeared hurls himself into the mass of legionaries waiting for him, wounding several before being subdued.

We should try to block the ends of the ladders that attach themselves to the top of the walls. That way the enemy can't use them and we may be able to collect them later for ourselves.

Think it might be best to have our heavy arcane hitters like Lena focus on the obelisks. Perhaps we should even keep hitting them. I think we should leave their scaling arcana intact since capturing and using them will be very useful. At worst, perhaps disable a few of them to reduce the number of people coming at our walls.

You look up from your latest felixsian victim in time to see a pillar of arcane energy envelop another obelisk. You spare a look over to Lena, just enough to give her a nod of approval before returning to your butchers work. You quickly appraise the number of enemy archers, and from the looks of it, they have been being hit by arrows, though there are several arcane shields up around them.

The next thing you notice, as you flourish your blade to clear the bits of spinal cord that were clinging to it from the last felixsian you killed is that the towers are beginning to be swarmed by elves at the top, the legionaries being forced back so that they can fight their foes effectively. You swiftly erect earthen walls around the bases of as many of the ladders you can. It is sloppy, and by no means perfect, but it greatly slows the flow of pointy-eared bastards to the tops of the battlements.

Realising that the small role your force will be playing in the battle, and the relative ease with which the wall is being held, you decide to motivate the troops. "PUSH THESE BASTARDS-" you begin to below, when an urlanthi blade sneaks through your guard, and a weak-spot in your armor, neatly slicing your side "FUCKING DRAGON-COCKS!! KILL THE BASTARDS!!!" you finish, immensely pissed off that you had been wounded by such an unskilled fighter. As you set about the task of giving the fucker that wounded you the slowest, most painful death you can on the battlefield, you realize something else.

Something far more important, more so than the fleeing southern battalion of elves. More important than the two new battalions that have just crossed past what is left of the field set up by the obelisks. You realize that while your enemies have used arcana, you have yet to see a single arcanist join the attacking forces.

    Would like Unassailable Focus

Reason being, sure the extra semi-botch would be nice, and it DOES seem to be pretty well made for our character seeing as though we do things like this all the time, and our character seems to be one drawn to "fate" so it would be appropriate in that sense, but if Justinian is going to take control of his fate, the fact that no negative modifiers can any longer be applied due to distractions and things in combat to our elementalism, will be CONSTANTLY used, not depending on the situation, but /always/. This is what makes it invaluable. We can avoid these kind of situations by simply using our elementalism to not get into them. I know that sounds cocky, but that is what a man shaping his own fate would do, not just barely getting by with oh shit moments, though that does make for good story.

You see the axe coming, and know its going to hit at the exact same spot you just were hit. But, you have a good feeling about the focus you have been pouring into the earth beneath the last two obelisks you can see. Yes, the gash hurts, hurts like a bitch. But you waste no time in stabbing the felixsian that stabbed you through his mouth in retaliation.

You step back, and fire off a few signal flares, aiming high so that the rising sun doesnt interfere with them. By the time you had turned around the obelisks are gone, and you realize why you hadnt had to deal with any arcanists thus far. There are two rather huge masses of them, both twenty five strong charging towards the wall, under cover of coruscating, shimmering shields.

You hear warhorns bellowing out deep in the city. The siege engines will begin firing soon, and the counter-charge will hit not long after that. "Warlords'r on their way Commander, nd th'mercs already switched out." Collin announces as he wades into battle beside you, giving you a bit longer to deal with your newest wound. As armored sergeants begin to scale the wall, you reset your stance and prepare to receive them. Only a little while longer now, and your part in the battle will be over.

You dont allow yourself any time to panic at the two large forces of arcanists now preparing to rush the walls. You lash out iwth every ounce of skill you have, and for nearly a minute you are a whirlwind of death, Collin causing just as much damage alongside you as the 190th and 98th switch out. Time seems to slow, as you fucus as keenly as possible.

Through your stonesense you feel the mechanisms of the siege engines deeper in the city locking into place, the tromp of feet as Uurlanthi soldiers continue to charge. You raise your hand and fire off a few signal flares into the air, then lash out with all of your focus.

the arcanists, the Archers, the entire rear line of this first wave of the day is sent to its feet in the space of ten seconds. The quake is not your most powerful, largest, or longest. However, in this situation, it is perfect. The archers, the arcanists, all are spilt to their feet. As you launch back into the fighting, a massive volley of arrows, and bolts, both steel, bone, and arcane issues forth from the wall. The archers are shredded, as are the arcanists. The units arent broken, but the volley you just had launched, and the fact that they will not be quick to rise should keep them at bay until the main force strikes... you hope.

Despite your best efforts, the earthquake peters out. Not that that is too much of an issue. You can hear mangonels and trebuchets locking into place, see the storm preparing to break on the enemy forces. Everything seems to be getting sluggish at the wall. You continue to hack away at armored sergeants, elves continue to hurl themselves up the wall, only to be cast down broken and dead, or soon to be. the swirling melee you are currently trying to direct is just a warm up, a preparation. All know it, and are simply waiting for the true battle to begin.

You shout and scream, but none of it is really enough to cut over the din of the battle. The words that do simply fizzle, your job is to hold the wall, which you are. Your maniple knows that, and they also remember that a soldier who paces himself can hold one for days on end with almost no rest. They know as much as you do that they dont need fire to defend, they need ice. Not the hatred that burns and strikes, but the cold, slow loathing that is more than happy to throw a man to his death, instead of carving him up now. And the mercenaries, while they may not necessarily know that firsthand, they survived this war this long for a reason, and are taking their cues from the clear veterans in this sort of battle.

You fire off signal flares for your reserves to prepare to join the charge, and you can hear confused shouting for a moment. then, the battle-horns below out. Not the small horns that a man would carry on his belt, no. These are the horns of a great and ancient city, built by dwarves. The things are massive, and have six separate mouthpieces. Five of these horns are built into the side of the mountain. They start low, almost too low to be heard, but even quiet, their volume is immense, and only rises. Everything seems to be shaking, and deafened by the might of the horn-blast when the pots of flaming oil strike.

The area just in front of the wall is a raging inferno in the blink of an eye. And seconds after the last pot falls, several flights of Duchy griffon riders streak overhead, flying as fast and low as they can. Halberds swing down to cleave Uurlanthi soldiers in twain even as the griffons level off from diving along the wall, releasing iron javelins from their claws.

You finish off the last soldier on your segment of wall, and glance about. To the south, the wall is already silent. To the north, you see Cornelius battling with the captain of the current unit of elves accosting his section of wall. As runes on the wall blast out even more fire, and the gates slam open the heated duel comes to a conclusion. The elf severs Cornelius arm at the shoulder, and your man plunges his blade into the elves chest. He throws his head back and roars in victory, unfazed by the loss of his limb as he kicks the slowly dying elf down into the flames.

Then, time begins to flow again. Dwarven chariots pulled by muscular, scarred, angry boarox burst through the gate. Bladed wheels slice through soldiers, and dwarves wielding scythes lash out, taking off the heads of those lucky enough to not be bisected. Hot on the heels of the chariots spill light Duchy infantry, twin blades, scythes, punchdaggers, they make short work of the surviving first wave, and continue to charge on, though you cannot see their faces, you know they are grim masks.

For, arrayed against the gilded, tall-helmed glinting host of dwarves, now with as many dwarves in plate armor as it has light infantry to the formations rear, is a massive host of Uurlanthi soldiers. The dwarves are outnumbered, but have skill. The battle is joined after mere seconds of charging. Light infantry on both sides disperses into a mad swirling mass of death. The grass is stained red not by the fading sunrise, but by blood almost immediately.

Though, the dispersed madness stalked by mounted knights and chariots, is soon shattered. Both sides heavy infantry hit home, their weight and tight formations plowing through the many cracks and stress points of the battle lines. Were it just these two armies, the dwarves would have a bloody, almost meaningless from the sheer volume of blood spilled victory, but they would have it. Then, seconds before the heavy infantry of Commander Agrenus maniple shatter the Uurlanthi forces into a thousand irreparable pieces, several things happen.

First, with a mighty shout, Vohzd Lennis riders emerge from the shadow of the mountains. Like lightning they lance through the bloody mess that is the northern flank of the battle, slaying all in royal blue, mercilessly riding down all who dare bear the sigil of the Silver City and the Kings star.

Then, the storm finally breaks, a lone figure seemingly flying on the mighty wind in a dirty, tattered red cloak. Its no crimson, but you can tell by how the lad fights, the lack of mercy he shows those in the Uurlanthi camp, that this lone figure has learned his flanking attacks from two others. Yourself, and Blackbird. Wulf is ruthless, lighting strikes obliterating tents, and cooking men, elves and felixsians alive. Within moment she is through the camp, and upon the rear of the enemy battle line his fury unabated as the storm lashes out, its wrath dwarfing that of all others.

Finally, a blade lances through the storm. At the tip of the blade, fly fifty valkeries. Their riders clad in sky blue, the banner familiar, but not. You recognize it as a mutation of the banner Janos once called his own. However, the device is all that you recognize, a single talon, though instead of trailing blood, it is now tearing at flesh. And, surrounding the talon, are seven crimson tears.

The riders level strange arcane devices, hard to discern at this distance, and their speed. They lance through the Duchy flyers, wisps of arcane energy trailing stone darts that obliterate whatever they touch. As the Stant flyers pass the wall, several are swiftly downed by repeater fire... and a lone arrow impacts at your feet. Its fetching in Stant colors, and, several streamers of what looks to be skin attached to the head. The shaft of the arrow falls off, and ignites, leaving only a message tube and the flaps of skin as the Stant flyers retreat off to the north.

The Degnarian forces strike the Uurlanthi line, and you can tell that the battle is already over. The dogs try to run, but a lone madman strikes them down with blade and thunder, and is soon joined by a vengeful force of Kharynchyek riders. There would be no point in your sallying forth, and, in fact it would only serve to interfere with what looks to be a flawless victory.

And at that, you set off to Cornelius, and find the man already halfway down the tower, his men worriedly carrying the now unconscious captain. "Your wives can save him, keep him from getting retired, right commander?" the man you recognize as Cornelius second asks, not bothering to hid his worry or exhaustion.

You simply nod, and take Cornelius from the tired soldier. Luckily, you are one of the first into the building being used for treating the wounded, and Vi is waiting for wounded to start arriving. One of the Dwarfs insides face lights up with recognition, and he dashes from the ward as Vi asks "What happened to him?"

You sigh "Everyones luck runs out eventually. I'm just hoping that his hasnt."

Cornelius begins to struggle to rise, to move, to do something that his delirious mind thinks is incredibly important. "We need you to hold him down, or we will not be able to properly stop the bleeding." Vi orders you, eyes crossing ever so slightly as she begins to focus on her task.

It takes until the sounds of battle are incredibly distant by the time the man improves. A strange commotion catches your attention, and you poke your head out of Vi's work area to see Wulf stagger into the medicae. To be blunt, he looks like hell. A solid 40 pounds thinner than when you last saw him, his eyes sunken and bagged, his body shaking ever so slightly, though he bears no obvious wound. Though, something draws you back to your proteges eyes, the youthful glint is gone, thouroughly. In fact, if you only had eyes to go on, you would say the young man is older than you. He hands you the message tube "From Collin. The flaps are, well..." he trails off as you observe the scraps of skin, each of them tattooed with the mark of the Forge of New Divinity. "didnt read the message, but I think that the dozen of those flaps on the tube are enough to trust the words within."

Before Wulf can continue, Lena bursts in, immediately wrapping the young man up in a fierce, protective, possesive hug. He winces at first, but, quickly returns the gesture, greedily, hungrily, desperately even. "Your hurt." She exclaims, before tearing off his tattered cape, and lifting the shirt of his mail, revealing a raised, angry red scar in the shape of the Imperial Dragon.

Rufus sighs, and hands you a knife with his free hand, visibly relaxing as a light dusting of arcane mists fall over the scar "Arcane." he explains as you take the exquisite dagger.

The scars will always look fresh, and always hurt like the cut was just made moments ago, but, I dont want them removed, nor could they be if I did."

"Why?" Lena asks, worried and concerned.

Wulf shakes his head "I..." before finally falling over, not at all surprising if he had spent the last few weeks on the run.

"Take care of him, we can finish our talk when he has recovered more." You order, before making to leave the building.

However, you are intercepted on your way out, by the dwarf that recognized Cornelius, and an older dwarf, the two of them carrying several arcana, and a few ingots of kextraetia "If you would allow us, Commander Trentz, we could replace your mans arm. We arent certain if all the arcana will work properly the first time, but we are most certain that it will succeed given a few days. And, its the least we can do for saving our city."

You pause, thinking, before you reply "When Cornelius is awake, we will discuss it with him. for now, I have to see what damage my maniple took in this battle." the dwarfs nod, dejectedly, and turn around to leave.

"We will return tomorrow evening to discuss this matter with you and your captain then." the younger replies, before leaving.
