    >"A mysterious stranger once sold me a magical set of armor. His price was my own flesh and blood. I graciously accepted, for I would sacrifice anything for king and country."

    >"I still remember my own horrid screams as I donned the armor, blood pooling at my feet as my flesh was consumed, and my soul bound."

You are Sir Hadrian Blackhand, all that remains of a shattered kingdom and her people. Your soul bound to a living suit of armor, and entombed in the fallen capital of your kingdom. Recently however, you have regained your freedom, and set out for find the cause of the apparent cataclysm that rocked the world while you were imprisoned.

You traveled east, only to find a blasted landscape seared by a massive fire elemental, and the sick cult that worshiped him. Dealing with that, you followed the coast and found the city of Grandal, where you have uncovered a sinister plot, and answers to many questions, and raised many more.

Stepping into the poorly lite pipe, you realize how narrow it is, as your head scraps the top of it. You can see a faint light farther down the tunnel, and you can faintly hear noises echoing through the metal.

To your right are the two men, one groaning in pain and "Cedric" curled up starting into space.

Cedric is a common thief but he doesn't need to die by our hand for that, leave him for the guards.

The other guy we need information from, and then we can decide what to do with him once we've assessed his part in this. We're after whoever is leading this whole operation and killing people. The little underlings and petty criminals that hang on the fringes of the dark dealings here aren't worthy of death by our blade.

Tearing strips from Cedric's own robe, you bind his hands and feet, then take a wooden spoon from the table and shove it in his mouth, binding it shut with another strip of cloth.

Taking your attention away from him to the other man, you pick him up by his collar. He is quite incapacitated from the blow to his head.

    >> Anonymous 01/13/12(Fri)19:04 No.17533063
This is no good. You need to understand what is happening down here, and what you are walking into.

Taking the man, you shove his face down into the liquid filth, holding him there until he starts sputtering and trashing about, then haul him out, placing him right in front of your gaze.

After a few seconds of coughing, the man freezes when he realizes his feet aren't touching the ground, and that those red lights in front of him are eyes. He stared but for a moment, and let out of terrified scream, the sound echoing down the pipe.

Over the mans pleas, begging and lamentation, you realize that any noise made here will echo for a long while, so your presents may already be betrayed.

A harder glare, and tightening of your hand silences him. He doesn't seem to be trying magic like Cedric did, but that very well may be because he is unable to think straight right now.

The faint noise you hard heard before has stopped.

    >What shall you ask him?

It was either mercy kill everyone still alive to save them from themselves, or sit there and watch as they slowly degenerated into troglodytes or horrible incestuous cannibalistic mutants.

You take a moment to consider what to do, then set the man down. The now animated snake headed clasp made the man jump and press himself against the wall, but you can not escape from Vengeance's reach. slithering up the man, he binds his hands to his body, keeping only his legs free.

Gesturing down the tunnel, you command the man to lead the way, which he gladly obliges, happy to tear his eyes away from your crimson glare. You made sure he could still feel it on his back.

And so the man leads the way, all the time talking of his family situation, how the king has recently raised taxes and drastically cracked down on privately owned businesses. He also talked of how he recently became a father, that his wife could never connive, so they had adopted a child no older than 3. An Orphan from the war he said.

The light steadily grew closer until you could see what was causing the effect. It would have caused you to gasp if you were able.

A large circular cave was cut into the very foundations of the city, no this place WAS the foundations of the city. the sewer branched off into the wall, while the path you were on jutted out into a walkway over a massive underground city, rivaling that of the one above. On the walls of the cavern were thousands of softly glowing multicolored crystals.

The walkway you were on led to a simple stone church, carved from the very rock itself. It hung suspended over the city below.

"Is it your first time viewing the City of Lights m'lord?" Your awe seemed to have shown even despite your expressionless "face". Chuckling, he paused to take in the sight himself. "The City of Lights is the true heart of Grandal, despite what some of the surface dwellers might say. This place has existed longer than the city above, no one is certain why one would build a city underground. Some say it was once ruled by Dwarves, others say it was to protect man from the wrath of the Gods. But very few people say it was built in remembrance, but ironically no one remembers what we are supposed to remember. But the city is ancient, with an even more ancient writing carved into every stone that we walk upon....I seem to have forgotten myself, we have arrived m'lord."

The stone church looms in front of you. Its large doors baring your way. Looking down to the ground, you see what he hand meant about "be written into every stone step. The writing was incredibly worn down do to people treading across it over the centuries.

Sending the man on his way, who oddly enough seems reluctant to leave now, compared to before, you inspect the door with your "eyes" to see what you can see. BASTARDS.

Nowhere near as bad as the fire plains, but you can noticeably see a few leylines crossed into a central location. Right in this building. A fierce rage overcomes you, burning at your very core, this was different that your other fury's before, this one wasn't caused by the flame, this was one of your soul. Your very being has ignited with the fires of retribution, visibly burning through your armor, giving your silhouette a red glow. curiously, you attempt to use the flames, and to your surprise, the come forth as bitter as the arctic winds.

You recall your training to be a knight, those brutal cold winters in the citadel high atop the mountains. While all the other children huddled together shivering, you alone sat perfectly unaffected by the chill. The Archmage had told you later that you had a very strong affinity in the fire element, and had tried pulling numerous strings to get you as his disciple.

As the fog billows around you, you wondered if things could have turned out differently if you had first faced off against The Mage as another mage, rather than a faceless knight. It was a foolish attempt at glory, and had earned you a missing eye and a prosthetic arm.

Shrugging the thoughts off, you kick in the door with all the fury of a thundering maelstrom, and the power of a raging firestorm.

    >You might be able to use minor fire magic if you had someone to teach you.

You are greeted with a thundering rumble, and a massive wave of energy overtakes you.....and does nothing once again. Several cries can be heard from the water cultists that gather here, with one familiar voice screaming "THATS IT! THATS THE FIRELORDS DEMON THAT ATTACK ME AND SCORCHED THE GUARD STATION!"

There seems to be at least 60 people, it is unknown how many of them are mages, 10 of them have weapons that you can see.

There is mutter, insults and jeers all throughout the church. Ignoring them, you set your sights on one thing; the one that is clearly a cleric of some kind. He seems to be conversing with the chalice, and then, taking notice to your presents finally, places the chalice on the alter and points a fat finger at you.

"THIS HEATHEN HAS COME TO USURP THE MIGHTY WAVE LORDS THRONE AND OFFER IT TO HIS OWN MASTER! MY BROTHERS! TODAY YOU ARE NOT BUT ACOLYTES IN YOUR LORDS SERVICE, TODAY YOU SHALL BECOME WARRIORS OF GOD!" He is about to continue but is interrupted by the inhumane sound of grating metal, starting out slowly then rising up until it soon echoes through out the hall.

The Jeers and insults are silenced as all eyes are upon the armored behemoth shaking in mirth to some joke that only you knew. But how could they know? The do not know the words. The very words that are carved into the stone walls of this place, into the very soul of the city. You would not noticed it at first, had your attention not been drawn to a cultist sneezing. There you saw an unforgettable Sigil, one that now reverberated through your very being in the form of laughter.

Still laughing, you gather the bitter Arctic winds themselves around you, freezing everything the proximity, and started walking forward. It was not long before the cultists soon broke and ran under the freezing assault. Some tried to escape past you, only to be frozen and shattered instantly, adding to your assault.

The Speaker tried to bolster his people, encouraging them to fight the heathen, but that was soon silenced by the towering obsidian clad giant cloaked in winter itself stood in front of the alter. He pressed himself against the glass and looked on with horror as you reached out to the chalice, laughing like a madman.

Perhaps you had finally lost your mind? Lesser men would have surely crumbled under what you witnessed and did, let alone spend and eternity walking the halls of a stone tomb. The words you had read echoed through you even now, words long since forgotten, filling you with a mirth that you had not felt in ages. Your laughter continued even when you brought an icy hand to the chalice and you heard the gibbering screams of the dying water elemental, even when the cultists regrouped and opened fire on you with the strange bows the Orcs had, punching through you all around, you did not stop. The words had brought both sorrow and happiness to your heart.

The cultists assault seemed to doubled with the death of their God, the speaker sits on his knees crying. You are severally filled with bolts, but it should not impede your movement. And still you laugh.

Your laughter reached its peak when you sliced the speakers head off, the arching scarlet splatter had a a strange kind of beauty to it. Grabbing the head you hold it for all to see, as the bolts start peppering your untouched front, and soon dwindle as hopeless cries call out. Only the most fanatical stay, the others fleeing before the death of their faith.

They soon filter down to 3 as they run out of bolts to fire. These men are pouring fanatical zeal out of their very bodies, as evident by the drool that drips down from their foaming mouths. They charge at you with weapons drawn, but a quick horizontal sweep of your Glaive kills all but one, who just stares back up at his grim reaper and joins in his laughter.

Ending the man, your laughter soon dies out in the silence after just what took place here. Striding over to the Sigil and words, you start reading back over them, as the bolts begin popping out and fall to the ground.

    >"CONQUERED BY NO ENEMY. NECESSITY KNOWS NOTHING ELSE BUT VICTORY. JUSTICE FOR ALL."

With that Vengeance settles back down, bringing your view back to the ever familiar crest, the spear pointing up towards the sun. Below it is the motto, flanked by names. Countless names. Recalling the fragmented words, you remember the phrase "Dies Irae". Judgement day.

You knew now what the people had built this place in remembrance for, for their fallen Capitol. The stone carving was of Dwarven make, the crystals where of Elven work no doubt, but that did not matter.

You have come home. Your people survived the cataclysm.

There were tens of thousands in the city, but people started fleeing when the earth started coming over. about half that died of starvation and dehydration, a quarter of that were eaten, the rest you killed or suffocated.
There were other cities in the kingdom though.

And before the question of "Why can we speak latin" comes up, the nobility used latin, it was a sign of class. You naturally had to learn it serving as part of the Royal guard. "Common" which is what those of lower birth speak, is what everyone you have come across speak.

bro, we now know a language that people don't use anymore, there's at least two uses for that 1. we can now read stuff that might be useful, 2. we can use that as a extra language skill in convening messages to other people that know the language as well.
as far as i'm concerned this is just awesome

No clue. The Elf king and Dwarven Chancellor were in the city when it was Entombed. Humans at the time (Think Anor landorian's from Dark souls, thats why you are so giant) were slightly ahead of the Elves in culture and technology, and it was your people who first mastered the elements and gave birth to the magic system as it is today. The Dwarves were miles ahead of you in technology, but had no magical affinity.

Relief of some kind to know that he wasn't forced to exterminate the entirety of his kingdom, that some managed to escape.

And then probably a desire to find what became of them later on. So our mission is probably less about vengeance now and more about exploration. Doesn't mean that we can't stop and help the helpless along the way though.

This brings up the fine point of us not knowing where the hell the archmage is. We'll find him, for sure, but until then being a wandering knight who slays elemental gods is probably a good beginning. How do we know the gods we slay are dieing though, and not being banished or something like that?

In this world, things die when they are killed. Unless they get sucked back through some kind of elemental event horizon. Even then, they are really just normal elemental's that people revere as gods, not actual gods.
