Ohgawsh was liked... he was really, really liked. A boy's first dinosaur. Above all else, he was bigger than all the other action figures and soldiers (and the boy's sister's dolls) so he was often the one seen head and shoulders (and neck, occasionally knees) above everyone else. He was rarely the star of the playtime, but almost always a part of it.
Then, one day, His boy put him up on a shelf overlooking a new piece of furniture... a desk. He was next to some old paperback books, and an autographed baseball. He stayed on that shelf for the next fifteen years, watching the boy do his homework all through high school. He changed shelves, and watched his boy again, doing cram sessions studying all throughout college. Once again, he chaged shelves, into a small apartment, and he watched his boy complete his postgraduate degree in engineering...and then, one day, the boy (who had long since become a man) wasn't home... but the girl (a woman, who loved his boy dearly) plucked him off the shelf from the boy's study, winked her nose at his bright orange paint scheme and chucked him in a trash bin.
He awoke in the dump, feeling a little betrayed, but also much better educated than many of his peers. After all, he had done almost nothing except read what his Boy had been reading, and writing, for the last fifteen years. |
