    So InfiniCon is basically Sigil.

To the casual attendee, no. It's just a fun place to go for a weekend like Disney World.

If you're a resident, and part of a faction at that? Hell yeah.

So recap of the last thread:

We have the basis for stats down. Personal physical stats that act as a "baseline" for your character. These do not change.

Then there are "Immersion" levels which determine additional powers, stat boosts, or abilities which are tied to your faction or character cosplayed, and how powerful they are on home territory and off of it.

    Any other suggestions?
    >> hungarian LARPfag 01/20/12(Fri)02:14 No.17603852
and just to start the conversation I post this here too:

    >>17603724

I think the security team would be something like a semi faction. It won't be a real faction that they couldn't participate in the political things but anyone from ANY faction could join them. By doing this they will maybe get a second "security" immersion that doesn't confront with any other immersion and the higher it gets the more it will force you to actually enforce the laws
    >> Anonymous 01/20/12(Fri)02:15 No.17603857
Just to repose, here's the current idea for stats.
BOD: contols sickness, endurance, and general body. Also physical defense.
STR: Raw muscle strength, for melee and such.
AGL: Agility, for running, acrobatics, and reflexes or aiming a gun.
    KNO: Knowlage, smarts, intellect.
WILL: Mental defense, pain resistance, mental sanity.

    Social stats:
Charisma: Body language, general speech, good for diplomacy, bartering, etc.
Attractiveness: Hygene, attire, beauty/ugliness, what people judge on first sight.
Leadership: Controlling people or leading them
    Con: Trickery or deception
IMM: Personal Immersion in fandoms, can be split into multiple fandoms, enables reality-bending trickery at higher levels, and gives bonuses. This is the flagship stat.
    >> Anonymous 01/20/12(Fri)02:16 No.17603862
So here's the archetypes I see being in play-

Staff: They have power all through Infinicon, as the convention IS their fandom.

Security: Have the power to reduce or ignore immersion. No kid, don't tell me about Homestuck. Get on the golf cart and put the puppet down.

"Norms": These are people who are either not aligned with one fandom in particular, or are, but haven't begun to walk down the Path of Immersion. They make good social characters, and all fandoms are willing to interact with them. Usually.

Fans: This is anybody who's primary affiliation is with one fandom. Their reputation within the fandom, and how much they immerse themselves within the fandom grants them powers. Due to the slippery slope nature of this, by mid-level immersion cosplay is a necessity. Eventually, along with powers and stat bonuses Fans start physically changing into characters. Sometimes you luck out and get Goku, other times you become a zombie from Resident Evil.

Guys I think I got a fix on that 3rd party Security problem clashing with personal IMM.

Just hand out Security badges from the InfiniCon council like in real cons. The badges serve to not only symbolize your office and authority but also protects your personal IMM as being universal throughout all of InfiniCon and gives you license to travel where the laws of InfiniCon will permit you.

Of course crafty criminal types will find ways to subvert this.
    >> Anonymous 01/20/12(Fri)02:18 No.17603879
Costumes could add bonuses to IMM, and also give little bonuses to both fandom diplomacy and related attributes/skills (when wearing a narutard suit, you are a bit quicker)

    (Meant this for last thread!)

    (1/3)

I shuddered and my breath stilled, I knew this was it. A fate worse than death was nearing and I clutched by handcrafted replica lasgun in my hands, the battery having run dry. It had happened so quickly that most of the squad had been overwhelmed. It wasn't supposed to go like this. It should not have gone like this! Our squad was on just another reckon mission skirting the Furry territory watching for any sign of encroachment. The eastern edge is where all the fighting was going on, not here on the western border!

We were in the middle of our sweep when Johnson stopped, pale as a ghost. Then I heard it, his motion sensor was going off in a rhythmic beep.

    "Contact!" He yelled.

"From where!?" I spat, running over to him to check the motion sensor. The beeping increased.

    "...Everywhere."

The scanner was screaming, showing dots rushing from all directions. The CO yelled for everyone to circle up and get ready.

The lights flickered still, ill repaired for no sane janitor would travel to the bowels of the city. Wish we could say the same for us.

The motion sensor was having a seizure. Then we heard it, a long spine tingling howl. The alpha male of the hunting pack signaled and an uproaring chant of "Yiff! Yiff!" echoed in the halls as a wave of hormonal fur and plastic claws fell upon us.

"Light them up in the Emperors name!"
    >> Anonymous 01/20/12(Fri)02:19 No.17603886
Immersion/powers should sort of be like Black Crusade's infamy/corruption balance. So Reputation and Sanity/Immersion. Have a high enough reputation when you go bonkers or too far into character, and you raise even higher in power level, becoming almost an avatar of your character. If the reputation is too low, you become a Sonic Recolor.
    >> Anonymous 01/20/12(Fri)02:20 No.17603888
    rolled 26 = 26

Other ideas: Immersion is tied to several things:

    Status within chosen faction
How well known the faction is or number of followers within it
    How well known YOU are
The level of you cosplay or in-character behavior

The first two affect the powers you gain from the faction association, and the second two would affect how long you retain those powers while on neutral or enemy territory.

Replica lasguns flashed and mace spray flamers let loose. We all knew the fluff, the way we were supposed to fight. The lasguns singularly couldn't do much as we had them made from laser pointers. But, thanks to old Ed, our electronics engineer come Techpriest we were able to turn them up beyond legal regulations. Hold it on someone for a bit and you'll leave a nasty burn, focus fire on someone and well...

Several of the costumed monstrosities lit up, their "precious" costumes being burnt to ashes as their wearers now shamed ran off shouting the names of their fallen fursona's, Calls of sorrow for "Spark Wolf," or, "Fluffy-kins" were added to the shouts of men and chants of "Yiff!".

But the flaming costumes only brought solace for a moment, as they revealed the terrible silhouettes of the masses of crazed furries they were still oncoming. Not even the constant spray of mace was stemming the tide. The two lines slammed into each other as man flesh met furry hair.

The onslaught was terrible and our line faltered, unable to keep up with the never ending swarm. The Sarg fell, followed by Jenkins. I saw Johnson being pulled down as he disappeared beneath the wave of fur. The last image I saw was that of a blue raccoon lifting a wooden board and then darkness. Utter and complete darkness.

They say that ignorance is bliss. I disagree, for it merely delays the time and extent of horror when it is finally revealed in full. When I finally opened my eyes the fur suits we had slain had finally gone out and all I had left to see by was once again the flickering lights in the hallways. I heard strange, sickening noises I never wanted to be able to recall ever again. In the edges of the darkness I saw fur snouts and pointed ears hunched over what I could only tell as guardsmen. I heard screams of "No!" as some of us were dragged into down the halls, never to be heard of again. Above me, stood the same blue raccoon that knocked me out cold. Emperor knows what it was about to do to me.

It was the end. Doomed to suffer in the depths of this place, for in the grim darkness of the city there is only war. As a guardsman I had failed horribly, I wouldn't even be yiffed standing.

    Or so I thought.

    cont. 3

"This is the judgement of the righteous!"

Light blared into existence, driving back the darkness. The furries in all their foulness looked up in horror to witness the coming of our saviors, LED lights shone from the Space Hulk LARPers dressed in full terminator outfits and armed with some of our best crafted weaponry. Light glinted of their chrome and gold spray painted armor. In mere seconds the hall was filled with the spray of rubber bullets and airsoft.

The furries scrambled and many fell bruised and battered in the immediate carnage. Wave after wave was felled but finally the groups clashed in hand-to-hand. Fur clashed with blessed plasticard and foam. Claw was met with vintage Nintendo power gloves. Some of our saviors held aloft working chainswords, their would be metal bits replaced with rubber hands which were born down upon the damned Yiffers with the fury of a million slaps. Their remaining forces seemed limitless yet they could not find any yiffable orifice upon the Terminators for the Emperor protects. The LARPers charged, crushing the furry waves and causing a mass panic that spread as fearful howls filled the air.

It was a glorious cleansing. A blessed justice; an Imperial justice.

(Been awhile since I've written anything, hope you guys enjoy it.)

So belonging to a well-known faction or being high up in the hierarchy of the faction would give you some impressive abilities while on territory controlled by that faction, but it would drain rapidly if you stepped off of it.

However, belonging to a more obscure faction but being really well-known and having an impressive costume and character act for what you cosplay as would mean your starting power would be somewhat lower, but you'd retain those powers in more areas around the convention.

We already went over this a bit, and factions would have their own power and immersion. Extremely immersed factions would be super serious about their role-play, and give bonuses. When you join with a faction, and are in faction territory, all IMM checks are pIMM + fIMM.

Could Immersion be something that fuels the powers? Kind of like how Power Points were in DnD Psionics?

You could pick up chapters of a series or dvds and increase your Immersion through that. This could also offer Normal folks a chance to gain some powers.

Normal folks have the advantage of not having those powers work on them as well, because they don't actually see ninjas with real swords and magic slinging around, they just see a bunch of nerds in costumes with plastic prop weapons.

Knowing how the mind of these more immersed attendees works and the rules that THEY follow would certainly come in handy though. but there are advantages to remaining unaligned.

((Posted in first thread before I noticed the autosage.))
I'd decided to take one last spin around the city before I finished my magnum opus. Godhood - perhaps only in the confines of the City, but Godhood in fact. It was so simple - create and print a comic book where I was a God, then cosplay as my own character! I would be -perfect-.

It was up on Floor 8 where it happened. I was up visiting a Firefly group that had offered me some food and a place to sleep while the City 17 Drone cosplayers hunted me, heading back to the lobby alone, when a door suddenly appeared on the side of the hall. It swung open, and for a moment I was struck blind and deaf. Such beauty. Such radiance. I fell to the floor, prostrating myself before the figure standing inside the door, unable to sense Him but knowing he was the meaning of my existance. Then my eyes and ears were repaired, my mind returned to me, and I looked up at Him. He sighed. "This is your one warning. Do you see this tiny closet? This is My Domain. I can move it to any building in the City as I see fit. If I leave it, however, I won't just die - God Himself will see Me turned to dust for My arrogance. And He has set Me to a task - find those in the City who would dare to approach Godhood and inform them just how fucking stupid they are. If you really want to spend all eternity in a box where you control everything inside it but can't stretch out comfortably and can barely interact with the outside world, go right ahead, don't say you weren't warned."

The door slammed closed. I wept on the floor for hours, only revived by a passing TF2 Scout and his energy drink. When I staggered back to my room, I threw away all of my drawings and I'm spending the rest of my ink penning these warnings.
Do not play in the realms of the Gods.

What happened to adding hygiene being a factor /tg/?

I see hygiene as this /tg/. Hygiene as a stat actually lowers your IMM. You raise your IMM by actan and cosplayan it up more, but your hygiene lowers as a result. To raise hygiene, you take time to cleanse yourself but as you do so you lose IMM equal to how clean you end up being.

Why would anyone raise their hygiene at the cost of their IMM then you ask? Higher hygiene allows you to reduce penalties and improves your reputation/interaction with Con staff, employees, security, celebrities and vendors. In short you're better with Normals.

The lower your hygiene and you become revolting to all others save other members of your own fandom.

You have heard tales of High IMM fandomites being outlawed in the neutral territories of InfiniCon except from their own zones. Security will chase them and other fandomites will react with hostility due to your own fandom clashing with theirs.

Or maybe you just need to Old Spice your shit up to avoid getting those dirty looks.

Those would be extreme cases, and probably decried by other factions, and would be put down by the law-enforcement factions.

In most LARPs, as far as I know, there are actually people who volunteer to dress up and run around as the monsters for people to kill.

I'm not sure how I feel about this going full homebrew. I'm really not.

I ran a similar setting thread like this and it just got away from me. Not even this fast. Before I knew it, people were off fiddling with builds, and professions, and creatures and maps and then the whole thing just fell apart.

I'm not trying to shit on anyone's parade, but I'd really like it if we could focus on the setting itself. Get the important details in order, then worry about what we do with them. so here's a general way I was thinking of statting out a fandom as a whole

    Franchise name: (Obvious)
Franchise medium: (What format is the franchise most frequently seen in? Some, such as WH40K, have spread across several mediums, but it is still a wargame at heart)
Fandom size: (How big is the fandom? A larger fanbase means more power and higher immersion power tiers, but at the same time more competition for the highest positions, and most importantly the number of enemies)
Elitism: (How detached and snobby is the fanbase? This is important because a franchise can compensate for size when calculating power and immersion caps through their elitism. However, taken too far and this can become self-destructive as the fanbase becomes stagnant. Many a mighty fanbase has been banished to the Undercon by overcompensating for a diminishing fanbase with higher elitism).

Let me reaffirm the general idea.

InfiniCon is the Convention that never ends. It's a massive conllection of all things nerdy, and geeky, and weeaboo-y and so on. It is a giant clusterfuck between an Anime, Comic Book, Video Game, LARP, Renaissance Faire, and traditional gaming conventions, all occupying the same city, taking over whole districts and areas in and around this self-contained world.

On the surface, it is an amazing testament to the power on fans and what they can accomplish as a united group. InfiniCon is the Las Vegas of conventions, holding large events, hosting respected guests, and attracting attendees in the hundreds of thousands, all for different kinds of fans all within the same place. Some come for a fun vacation weekend and countless others never left, staying at InfiniCon, immersed in the wildly different cultures, wearing costumes all day, every day, working to keep the Con and the city itself running.

But InfiniCon is not as utopian as it may seem. Though they coexist with one another, many fandoms butt heads quite often over territory disputes, claims to certain resources, and sometimes jut because they don't like each other.

Darker still is the seemingly limited resources that trickle into the city. countless people want to come and live the dream, but there aren't enough rooms to go around, not enough spots for every vendor to have a shop, not enough flawless silk fabric for every tailor or enough cardboard for every propmaker. Things can get cuthroat and quite deadly the deeper you get into Infinity City....

If this was done in 'Don't Rest Your Head' the danger of becoming too immersed would be that your character actively looks to enter the Undercon where your immersion powers are pretty much on full scale.

One section of the Undercon is ruled by a single Guts sitting on a throne of his defeated foes.

Say, a corporation who had a business in the city before the Con started, and has grimly hung on, 'business as usual' with its people, not allowing any of 'that Con silliness' inside its walls? Or a place like Lowe's on the edge of town, where people who live outside of town still have to visit and sometimes they have to contend with the Congoers for materials....

    So, this immersion stat.

Does that basically mean that if you crossplay a character of the opposite gender, at low levels you're a fat nerd running around in a dress, but the more immersed you get, the more you actually look like a female to others and yourself? So that hot gothic lolita chick everyone in Infinity City describes as a hot piece of ass could actually be a really immersed pimply white neckbeard? Or the cold-yet-beautiful Sororita that issues spankings to heretics with her power-paddle is some obese sweaty nerd crammed into plastic power armor?

Most of those skulls were probably his former fandom-mates. Individually that Guts would be a pretty scary fucker by himself but would be no match if he were outnumbered by members of a truly healthy fandom.

I think the general genres a faction could fall into would be:
    -Fantasy
    -Sci-Fi
    -Videogames
    -Comics
    -Anime
    -Other
and then those could be divided into sub-genres, such as Anime (Moe), Anime (Shonen), Comics (Cape), Sci-Fi (Cyberpunk), Sci-Fi (Space Opera)... etc. The small Other category would be for the miscellaneous stuff that won't fit, such as Furries, Twilight fans, Sports team fans, and so on.

The city should be in some hostile environment, like a desert or polar area and essentially be one gigantic indoor complex with a huge premium on real estate. Hotel Suites are passed down through generations. Most Convention goers get tiny, submarine-like quarters. Warring factions fight Stalingrad-style, room by room. Permanent residents/staff are given magnetic key cards that allow them access to backstage areas and secret corridors.

The airport is adjacent to the convention center and is the only (legal) way in and out

With no clocks or external cues, immersion can happen quickly. Of course there are rumors of the city being built on the site of a nuclear disaster, or ancient burial ground, but nobody takes that seriously.

I've always had this knack for being in the right place at the right to snap a picture of an awesome mock duel by Jedi-Sith cosplayers, or a massive parade of the Spartans, or a chick with a particularly cute... yeah I tend to keep those pictures to myself.

But all rumours and gossip aside, I'm probably one of the few people who *know* that there is actually something... magical about Infinity City. Like I've said before, I've always had this knack for getting those shots that no one else can. And for the first time in my life, I can actually claim that to be a total truth.

It was a Friday night sometime about two years back when I first realized it. Cons are always going on in I.C., but that night was the premier of a brand new anime produced and written purely by Infinity City citizens about Infinity City. According to the critics it was supposed to be a massive overcharacterization of a group of people who suddenly developed super powers. I remember catching the first episode when it went got picked up by national television, it was almost painfully funny like that Big Bang show. The parody was almost too much for my tastes.
    >> Ghost, Part IV Late Night Writefag 01/20/12(Fri)03:24 No.17604230

I was roaming the theatre floor, snapping shots of the cosplayers hired to dress as the characters from the anime. The night went alright and I got a lot of good stuff to send in for the morning paper. I even got some great shots of the lead producer and the head storyboard editor. When they learned who I was, they invited me to take a tour of their studio next week which I gladly accepted. It was the first complete anime studio to ever be built in Infinity City, a 'scoop' that I couldn't resist.

I left the premier that night and got a late night snack at The Apron. It's this Infinty City take on the French sidewalk cafe, except all the wait staff are 10's. But that's only part of the reason I go there. Their coffee cake is the best I have ever tasted and their prime seating is on a terrace that overlooks the very heart of the city. It's called Infinity Plaza, clearly the most inspired of names, right? Despite the city's naming conventions they clearly got everything right when they designed this work of art. The entire thing is over 100,000 square feet of open space. Lights set into the sandstone walkways throw up a majestic glow and dozens of fountains add to the regal feeling the place inspires.

Most of the time I just come here to sit and watch the people pass by. I'm not a fan in the slightest of some of the people who live here, but most of them are all right. And things definitely changed for the better when they instituted a formal dress code, some infractions are actually punishable by permab&s, which I laughed at. One of my co-workers maintains a blog that features a daily Worst Dressed. Some of the fashion faux pas she finds are now famous in the web.

Tonight felt different. I had that buzz in my feet, the itch where I've gotta get out and walk. The kind of feeling where I know that I'm not gonna go to sleep before dawn. I hate these nights, especially because it means that my boss has to officially write me a warning but he's mostly cool with it because he knows that I.C. sleeps less than New York City and I do my best work at night. I had an entire set of night shots that got featured on F-Stop.com, and that set came from a night exactly like this one.

So I set about the process I call 'walking,' I know another inspired name. I didn't care where I went, and I snapped every shot that inspired any tiny feeling inside of me, including the hatred I harbor for weeaboos. But hey, different strokes I guess. That's the other cool thing about being a photographer. 99% of people don't mess with you at all. In fact, most of them just wanna see the picture themselves. It's this self-vindication thing I think. People wanna know they look good doing what they love.

After about three hours of solid walking, I found myself on the top of this apartment complex called Broken Wings, probably named after some horrible animu I'd never heard of. I was in the lobby snapping shots of some cosplayers and then just kinda found my way up there. I have no clue how.

So I'm standing there thinking how awesome the view was when I saw this chick in a wierd lolita dress flying through the air. I snapped the Camera up so fast to take the shot that I whacked my cheekbone against the casing. It looked like she was chasing... something, I couldn't tell what it was, it was moving too fast for me to follow. All of a sudden, I found myself running across the rooftop of another building, camera still trained on the girl and the thing as they ran from rooftop to rooftop. I was too caught up in capturing the whole thing that I had no clue where I was going or where I was.

The two of them stopped on a rooftop and I saw them clashing. The lolita girl was wielding some sort of staff that would elongate and retract. The thing she was fighting I realized was a guy in strange rags. As I snapped pics I realized that under all the rags and torn outerclothing he was wearing protective body armor and carried a serrated combat knife. The two didn't even seem to notice I was there.

There was a lot of shouting, mostly the girl wanting the rag-man to give back something he apparently stole, to which he never replied, just kept trying to stab her. Eventually, he got through her guard and jammed the knife deep into her sternum. The girl collapsed and he bolted for the edge of the roof, leaped off and disappeared from sight.

I was pretty fucking shocked. I've always heard about people getting killed in Infinty City over pretty stupid shit, but this was pretty hardcore. I was so dumbstruck that I walked out from behind the vent I had been sniping pics from and just sorta half-walked, half-stumbled over to her. She looked up at me and laughed this wierd laugh. She said she knew who I was, she'd seen my picture in the newspaper attached to some of my work. She said I was an urban legend in the city, this ghost who appeared and disappeared, who captured the most amazing pictures of the people, all of the people, of Infinity City. I didn't play favorites or bash people, I was a good man who understood that everyone had a purpose and a worth.

    And then she died.

Or at least I think she did. She kinda stopped talking and her eyes went blank. I've never seen a dead person, but I guess that's what it looks like. It was fucking creepy. I don't know how long I stood there, but the next minute I wasn't. I was standing back on the rooftop of Broken Wings looking down at a picture of her dead body on my viewscreen.

I punched a wall so hard I think I broke a knucle or two. I cried for a little while. The things she said about me kept bouncing around my head, her voice just wouldn't shut the fuck up. My whole life, ever since I was 5, I'd always wanted to be a photographer. I'd never been real important, sure I'd gotten noticed by a few people who realized that I had what they called a "talent," a "gift," but at least to myself I had always just been some dude with a camera. My dad once told me that humility was the greatest quality any human being can have. I watched a kung-fu movie one time about a guy who was able to defeat opponents just because he was so nice and humble. And now I was apparently some fucking legend, and I had found this out from a girl that I watched die in front of me. Or maybe not, I have no clue.

I never saw that girl again, at least not physically or from any other news source. It's like she never really existed. I still have the photos. Once a year I pull them out and look at them. I don't know whY I do it, I can't even tell you the date, I just do it instinctively.

I don't sleep much anymore. I saw a doctor a few months back, he said I must've developed insomnia as a response to some sort of stress, probably from working too much. I almost cried when he said it, but I laughed and made the appropriate jokes about sleeping when you're dead. He said I could seek some sort of medication or theraphy that might cure the insomnia, and I'd said that I would have to think about it.

To tell the truth, I kind of like it. Insomnia has a few benefits, the most prominent one is all of the Walking that I get to do now. Whenever I go out, especially at night, it's like I have this selective invisibility cloak. I can disappear in plain sight until I interact with people. And there's this sort of wierd teleportation thing that happens. I can just suddenly be somewhere. I can get into a lot of cool places with my newfound powers. My boss is ecstatic. He's added an entire section to the newspaper to showcase my work. But there are some photos I just can't show him. Stuff that the public can't know about. There's a certain side to Infinity City, a side where your worst nightmares are real. A place where heroes actually fight for all things good. It's a strange place and I, like the fly on the wall, can only watch and record what goes on. Maybe one day I'll publish all the shit that I've collected.

Then again, maybe I won't. Ever since that one incident, I haven't had anymore chase sequences. Maybe I will one day, but I sincerely hope that I don't. I've decided that I like life too much to watch someone get hurt over anything. It's actually kind of painful to watch anyone die now, even if it's a movie or in a book. I go back to that night and see that girl, such a pretty girl. Prime of her life, whole world of possibilities, and it was all taken away from her. And for what? I've asked myself that so many times. I've tried to find the rag-man who killed her, but that's never gone anywhere. He's disappeared just like that girl. Then again, Infinity City is pretty large.

I have a friend who directs some of the mock combat shows that go on in I.C. and I've been doing some practice of my own with a knife. One of these nights I'm gonna find that bastard, and when I do...

Perhaps it's an odd zone much like the Undercon where Immersion works to high degrees? It would require some powerful enforcers, but I think it could work. Say Superman gets uppity, there's a Superman enforcer that can toss him out of the zone and thus de-power him.

The video game cosplayers would have a field day since re-spawning would probably be possible at this level.

I remember when I first heard of InfiniCon. My best friend and I were arguing about how to split the rent. We were both so broke it wasn't even funny. Then he gets this gleam in his eye and says to me "You know, if we went to Infinicon, we could stay there forever."

I had no idea what the hell the daft bastard was talking about. After some explaining from him, I was certain he was certifiably insane. A convention in Antarctica that never ends? In a city housed deep beneath the ice, holding hundreds of thousands of people who, according to him, become so immersed that they lose all sense of reality? Well, I'll skip the part where we sold all our worldly possessions to afford the tickets, and boarded the plane. The flight over, however was...eventful to say the least.

I've been to conventions of all kinds. Anime, Sci-fi, you name it. The people are almost always the same. But the people on the plane, heading towards this mysterious place; they were something else. A few were your typical ham-beasts. Bloated sacks of flesh, pimply and smelling of unwashed clothing and sweat. The smell was enough to make me gag a few times. Then there were the others. The others who had costumes made of the finest materials, masterfully crafted. I was known as a fairly decent prop maker myself, but these creations were....well, beautiful. The people wearing them were also perfect matches for the characters they were portraying.

    >>17604810

After talking to a few of them I realized that almost all of them had a "character" they were acting as. They played these roles to the letter. Asking my friend about it, he simply called it "Immersion". A loss of reality where the person loses themselves completely and becomes their character in almost every way. Secretly, I was thankful that I had not picked any character. The idea of losing myself to some grand delusion simply did not sit well with me. Sitting back, I noticed the plane's cabin music for the first time. A lot of old video game and anime sound tracks. A few struck chords, bringing me back to my early years, and making me think that perhaps losing yourself in this fantasy world wouldn't be so bad after all.

When the airport came into view, through the blackness that was the antarctic night my breath was taken away. A massive complex carved into the ice and snow, that illuminated everything around it for miles. Part of it was buried under the ice, the entrance to the city I wagered. The blueish glow gave everything a very eerie feel. The landing was a bit rough. Several of the ham beasts lost their lunches, the cosplayers stayed mostly composed however. When we departed and walked into the main section of the Airport me and my friend were bombarded with intense colors, laughter, song, and the smells of all kinds of food. We couldn't be bothered with that though. We had to find our quarters. My friend had made some kind of "Bargain deal" with someone inside the city. He said the whole thing was kinda shady, and the place we would be staying in was a rough part of town. "Please, these are a bunch of nerds. How rough could it possibly get?" I told him.

If I had known, I would have turned around and ran screaming into the frozen wastes.

We took a cab, which was driven by a rather cute girl through the city proper. We had traveled through reinforced steel tunnels into a chamber that was impossibly huge. The city itself seemed to be in a state of perpetual twilight, the lights and all giving everything a serene kind of glow. Characters from all kinds of scenes walked the streets, enacting play fights and in general acting like anyone else in a Con would act. There were buildings everywhere, constructed in a Baroque style that I found to be incredibly pleasing to the eyes. These were filled with shops, arcades, restaurants, a few apartments and hotels. Our driver was fairly friendly, with blue hair cropped at the shoulder. Her eyes were a strange sort of red, and she had a scar running diagonally between her eyes. She called herself some name that, for the life of me I can't remember.

Anyhow, the deeper into the city we drove the more nervous she seemed to get. Looking carefully around as she drove, slowing almost imperceptibly. At one point she even turned off the lights. The part of town we were in now was dark. The street lights were all broken out or seemingly ripped from the ground. Strange folk peeked around corners or bolted across the street in terror. At one point we passed an alley where I could have sworn I saw someone with a massive sword cutting down a group of people dressed as animals. We reached a run-down building, our new residence. The girl hurried us along and peeled off as fast as she could. As me and my friend walked up the steps to this old European-styled building I could have sword I heard whispers. The street was dark, and quiet. It was colder here, my breath fogging up and making me shiver.

My friend knocking on the door actually made me jump. I was too busy looking down the dark street to notice him doing anything. After a few moments I heard rustling from inside. A slot of the door moved aside, and a pair of large, frantic eyes appeared. "Who are you?! I'm armed you vile little cocksleeves, I will fuck you with a chainsaw if you don't fu- Oh it's you! Hang on let me unlock the door. It's not safe out."

The voice was female. They eyes were strange too. One eye was brown, the other a glowing red. She sounded panicky as all hell but I suppose I wouldn't blame her, looking around the place. After some rattling of chains and click-clacking of locks and what sounded like a key pad, the door cracked open. "Hurry, hurry. It's not safe out there, you idiots! Get inside!"

My friend and I walked into a dimly lit hallway. The walls were plastered with runes and seals. The wood floor covered by a narrow and worn green rug with a rather elaborate scrollwork pattern on it. Putting my bags down I turned to thank our host, despite her seeming a bit strange, before promptly turning around again, feeling a bit of a blush coming on. The young woman had long, wild black hair. Her eyes were indeed different colors. One borwn, the other red, which was covered by a stray bit of her wild mane. She wore a loose black sleeveless shit with a skull motif. She appeared to be wearing no pants, instead wearing a pair of panties and rainbow-striped socks. Nice body, nice legs.

Shaking my head clear for a moment I tried to speak and introduce myself but my friend interrupted. "I brought those things you asked for. The Holy water, the wooden stakes, the silver cross, and all the herbs. I think that buys us room and board for a while, right?"

Rifling through the bag of goodies my friend gave her, the girl waves us away. "Go, look around. This place isn't that big. There's food in the kitchen, but DO NOT TOUCH THE CAULDRONORHORRORSBEYONDTIMEANDSPACEWILLCONSUMEYOURSOUL!" The last bit is shrieked as I slowly back towards the kitchen. This girl could have been a wild ride if you know what I mean, but I kind of have rules for women. Chief among them is "No crazy chicks." Looking at the filthy kitchen I notice the large black cauldron on the stove. It's bubbling away with a foul-smelling concoction and I decide it's best not to screw with it after all. Grabbing a soft drink and looking around a bit I realize the girl wasn't kidding about the place being small. The whole house was narrow, maybe twenty feet across. It looked like it had three floors, so I found the stairs and went up. The second floor has a similar rug, only red. Three door are in the hallway. The first has a slot like the front door. I figure this is our hosts' room. My friend is already staking out the room at the far end of the hall. Safely away from the crazy girl's lodging. He's already unpacking his costume. Cid Highwind from Final Fantasy Seven. I trudge back to the middle room and open the door carefully. The room is musty smelling but in a kind of pleasant "antique" kind of way that I enjoy. Setting my bag down, and plopping onto the bed, it doesn't take long for the jet lag an exhaustion to set in. Before I know it, I'm drifting off to sleep. I vaguely remember a wild-haired someone peeking around the door frame and slowly closing the door, whispering "Sweet dreams."

Heh, this is some pretty cool shit. You wanna play a low tier game? You've got plenty of social backstabbings to go around. Want to fuck around at epic levels? Just say that Immersion levels are fucking high lately and everyone is their character! A little something for everyone!

This almost reminds me of...something. I can't remember the name, but the big thing was that, at the root of all the various mystic powers and shit, the most base mystical element was simple belief, turned so strong and powerful it warped the world, like crosses turning away vampires because people believe that they do. I always did like things where belief was king!

So, are we going with the Immersion into the fandom shows how much power you have and devotion of the fandom showing how much power you get outside of the high Immersion zones?

    Lightsabers?

Sure. You want a working one, it'll cost more than the toy crap you trip over everywhere. You want one that won't shut off after a few minutes and won't explode if it gets wet? That'll cost more.

You want the real thing, taken from a genuine Jedi's still-warm hands? Better start looking now. Them elegant weapons aren't cheap.

Get a stormtrooper blaster instead, or just a gun.

Ah. Then I guess I am concieted. But can you deny that belief is a strong factor in Infinicon? Belief in the fandom, belief in the once rumour that acting like your character drowns you in a hallucination so strong it affects reality.

It'd prolly work better for the person it was made for but might not work outside of Immersion zones. After all, its not just a lightsaber but Jedi Master Rinaltham's Lightsaber.

But if everyone knows it's Jedi Master Rinaltham's lightsaber, that he put his special crafting techniques into, then it'd probably work as well for anyone else as long as the belief remained - thus, as long as it stayed in an area of appropriate Immersions - both in Star Wars and in the weapon. The Star Wars geeks on the north side of the city might think it's the greatest lightsaber ever, but the guys on the southwest side might not have ever heard of it and to them it's a well-made weapon but nothing special. And of course to the rest of the fandoms it's probably just a prop.

    I help where I can.

Also I'm thinking now about the "politics" thing that we still don't quite pinned down.

So what we know so far that there are genres, fandoms and categories/subcategories, among other things. For example in the Sci-fi genre there is the WH40k fandom (Maybe not the perfect example because of all the shit that wh40k has) with the Space Marine category and in that the different chapters as subcategory.

Now the genres are just big loosely connected "philosophical friendships" there could be so much difference between two fandoms in the same genre that most likely they won't be close allies (think about Star Wars vs Star Trek)
So a genre connection won't be anything strong but if you on the territory of your own genre your immersion won't fade away that fast, the whole territory won't work against your immersion that hard.

Now fandoms are a little more specific, we can easily name them like the trekkies or the Dr. Who thing, maybe Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.
Between famdoms there could be alliances and wars, non-agression pacts whatever you want, and every fandom will need some kind of leadership. This could be a one man dictatorship or some kind of anarcho syndicalist commune what they want really, but the politics will be happening between the fandoms on the greater level. Leaders could be from any category or subcategory of the fandom.

The categories and subcategories where things will get interesting. So far you could think about genres as continents, and fandoms as countries. Then the categories and subcategories are the counties, cities, districts, etc. You could have sub-sub-subcategories but for simplicity sake we could call those subcategory too.
So in a category people will stick together a little more. They could work together a little better but there could be still wars between them and alliances too, or more likely sister and brother categories. Rolling with the wh40k example the IG category and the Space Marine category probably could work together better (And probably they will be part of the Imperium of Man alliance which is between some wh40k categories)than the IG and the Tyranids. There could be even wars between those two but hopefully they will case battles if there is an enemy outside of the fandom.
I think the bigger categories and subcategories would have leaders, spokesmen, diplomats and things like that but as you go deeper and deeper in the subcategories it could be that one has no leader at all, maybe just one or two charismatic person but no real leadership.

Now for the really interesting part.

We already decided that someone could have more than one immersion if he/she is into more than one thing.

so it stands to reason if a fandom could have more than one genre. Like something is Sci-fi/Noir or Fantasy/Horror/Low-Magic
This of course will have some benefits and drawback (like in having more than one immersion) but I would like to imagine that always the actual leaders decide that their fandom is in which genres according to what alliances they have at the moments and what wars they wage.
It's like the ultimate edition war. People in the fandom would fight for the leadership so they could decide if the fandom should or should not have the grimdark genre.

The preoblem comes in when we realize a small thing: You can't precisely categorize most of the things.
For example where do we count larpers? Is this a genre or a fandom? because we have WoD vampires, postapoc stalkers fantasy knights and everything. We are really like every other nerd but we do it in real life our game. But in Infinity City everyone do this.
Same for the cosplayers, everyone is a cosplayer to some extent.
We could say that LARP is not a real genre or fandom because we just do the same thing as any other guy maybe a little differently. But everyone can feel it that the larpers couldn't be just a subcategory in every fandom.
And I'm pretty sure there are hundreds of other examples but that's what I know the best.

So what do we do with problems like this? We cheat. Big time. But still within the laws of Infinity City.
So we could say that the questionable groups like these became a fandom on their own right. They had enough people to conquer a territorry in Infinity city and then hold it. Maybe they aren't considered a real fandom by the elitists maybe they stole a big amount of fans from other fandoms but still they are a froce that others should count with.

I think LARPer falls within a class or subset definition, along with writers and artists (writefags/drawfags), fanboys, enthusiasts, and more. Each one has a general set of skills that they're better at, but we should be willing to let the players decide how they fall within a system. But a LARPer-focused fan of a setting will probably be a better fighter than, say, a writefag, but the writefag will find it easier to manipulate IMM, fanon (manipulation of other people's IMM), and the like - the difference between a fighter and a bard, for instance.
    >> hungarian LARPfag 01/20/12(Fri)13:00 No.17607574
    >>17607532

there are just too much different kind of larpers to categorize them like this (of course when we say larp most of the people will think about fantasy larpers)
And as I said there are more than a few exception in other places. Like what about WH40k tribal worlders? Those guys could easily count as some fantasy guys.
We can't make perfect pattern so we need to cheat and make exceptions and be as flexible as we can.

I think that as immersion increases, hatred toward haters increases as well. Think of it this way: In real life, someone who watched Pokemon all their life would not take well at all to someone hating on it. Someone who played a couple games and liked them would be less upset. It wouldn't weaken your immersion, but make you more angry as your immersion was higher.

Maybe if someone started hating on your favorite series, you would have to roll some sort of Will+Immersion check to control yourself, and not go into a hateful flurry of rage?

I'm imagining them as the "moderators" of sorts, and can pretty much just negate the effects of immersion on them (fans can't reality-warp them or effect them with anything warped). As you climb down the staff ladder, however, the "moderator" powers are weaker than higher-ups. Immersion would be less prevented then.

I had the idea that this might be defeated by 'artifacts' found in the Undercon. Say that a Jedi cosplayer stumbled into the Undercon and found himself fully immersed, to where his lightsaber might actually start cutting through almost anything. What if he dropped the lightsaber? Wouldn't it still work because of the massive amount of Immersion? Maybe the weapon gains a small Immersion score of it's own and acts like a real lightsaber in anyones hands, to the point where hitting a staff member with it could have a real result. I figured it wouldn't cut them in half, but maybe give them a strong shock?

Feel free to just throw this idea out the window, I'm rather interested in the things we could do with the Undercon and the pure insanity it may be down there.

This 'Assimilation' would be like the Staff version of Immersion and would provide them with their own powers, forming a gestalt sort of thing. Shared mental resources, instinctive communication with each other. They would be the rank and file grunts of the staff, only very highly ranked staff members would be individuals.

I'd been running for weeks now, moving from district to district, staying with various friends who owed me favours. They just keep coming and they're getting more... Insistent... At first it was a knock on the door, a hand on my shoulder. Last time a full team of them stormed the building I was staying in, took out the family of Strawhats who were sheltering me. Ive been unable to get anymore places to stay since then, word's gotten round.
I think I've made them angry, do they get angry? Resisting them for so long, my original crime wasn't that serious, I can hardly remember it anymore, this has become my life, I am a fugitive, running is who I am. And hunting is what They do. Ive heard stories, they dont sleep, they dont eat, one guy I know swears they dont even breath. And they cant be killed, Ive seen a Sith cut one of them clean in half, he just slowly crawled over to his legs and started sewing himself back together. They aren't Human.

This would be the higher-power-level interpretation of it. We've stated that you can run this setting on a more mundane level or one where the powers you get from various forms of immersion are pretty significant, and this would be under the latter.

I would like to think that most of the perks you get from being in Security would be more related to investigations and dispute resolution, not necessarily open combat.

Perhaps Security would offer to employ people from around the con? Certain perks could be available; having some amount of Immersion no matter where you are, housing, and a pay check?

The down side is that you may be called in to bring in some of your friends and if you refuse you could be branded a rogue agent and then have all of Security after your ass.

Alternatively they could have a 'free agent' group that's pretty much just a bunch of bounty hunters.

I love this thread, I love this idea, and I love what you've done with it.
I have nothing but an alternative idea for Immersion (quite late, I fear):
If you are sufficiently "in character", you get Immersion points, which you can use for one or two special tricks, mostly mundane stuff (running just a bit longer and faster, noticing one detail you would've just missed, etc.). Now, if you spend Immersion points, your Immersion pool (how many Immersion points you can hold) increases (temporarily or permanently? Maybe depending on the trick you used). Now, the thing is: More Immersion points don't really warp reality. They warp you. You have a huge Immersion pool? Then you see your lightsaber cut through hordes of droids, even if you swing your plastic replica at two poor kids on their first convention.
If you find another, similarly immersed individual, your interaction will be heroic, full of great emotion and stuff for the legends. But only for suitably immersed persons.
And sometimes, there are those whose Immersio gets so high, they vanish one day. Some say they roam the UnderCon in their mad power fantasies, but there are cults worshipping them as Ascendants To The Fictional Plane...

In the previous thread it was stated that the staff is... well... understaffed.
They don't have enough men for a proper security because there are so many people.
That's why you can join into the security force with some restrictions.
There was an idea that being in the security force could give you a special "security force" immerson too.
But the point is that the people who run this whole city is far from gods they are sometimes sweat blood so the whole place won't crumble

Alright, a few more things about immersion.

Let's say, for example, you have fandoms, like WH40K Space Marines, and Touhou. Both of these are well known for being focused exclusively on one gender; all Marines are male, all (important, known characters) are female. Yet, we've seen female Marine cosplayers and male Touhou cosplayers. How would this work out in terms of immersion and general interaction with others?

Right.. so.. As usual.. Still not keen on the homebrew thing, not when we're talking about managing a few dozen different stats and ratings and factions and fandoms and popularity and fame and all that.

Can you even imagine juggling half these ideas as a GM for multiple characters? because I can't.

There are concepts in there that I like, don't get me wrong, but I think it's starting to become convoluted and drawing attention and effort further away from the point.

If you don't mind, how about we steer the conversation towards something that might further detail this whole idea.

Where would Infinity City be located? I noticed in one story, someone said Antartica and as funny as that idea is, Antartica makes it harder to imagine people regularly traveling to InfiniCon regularly. Likewise, regular shipment of goods, materials, foods, and so on would be near impossible.

I'm thinking somewhere in the middle of American like Nebraska or Kansas where there's all that empty space and expanding outward wouldn't leave the city bumping into any other civilizations.

Oh, also, I love that "vegas with a neckbeard" description for the city.

US because they are a big fucking country and, well they have the money for it. Germany and Sweden is not that poor either and they have these kind of things in their culture more or less.
And Japan is... well it's Japan.

The space wouldn't be a real problem because let's face it, every country has enough for another one. (or they could make an artificial island for it or use a regular one)

Now I would like to image that the city income based on tourism mostly and other related things.
So natural resources not that important either. It would be nice if it has a beach or something but not a must have thing, after all we can already build artificial beaches.

Location is really only an issue if we place it somewhere that isn't easily accessible like the middle of the ocean.

Like I said, the need for things to be shipped into the city is quite high. Vendors are always in need of new books and figures and little paraphernalia to sell. This goes for all districts and genres and fandoms. Comic Book guys need and want little collectibles and the latest volumes of their favorite series just as much as the Anime Weeaboos and there's more than enough vendors in town willing to import to make sure they get what they want.

The cost of tourism, badges, and rent from city-owned apartment complexes certainly brings in a great deal of money. Plus there's all the temporary visitors who inject further income through hotel room fees during bigger events and celebrations. Plus there's all the local businesses like restaurants and fabric stores and the like.

I also imagine, for the touristy visiting attendees, there are even some costume shops that rent out cosplay outfits so groups passing through can get "the full InfiniCon experience" or so they tell others...

Which actually makes for an interesting plothook. A bunch of visiting normals get in over their heads and cause trouble in the wrong district while in costume and now they've gone missing...

Well, I had something written up regarding factions before I ran to work.

Though certain series may fall under one larger category, such as a MSPA falling under comics, the dislike for that series may lead to a neutral or hands-off reaction to their existence. The comic district or anime district might allow them to live amongst them and do their thing, but if they come across one of them getting into trouble or causing shit they won't react or help them.

So, say some grey-painted zodiac t-shirt motherfuckers piss off a bunch of LARP knights and those knights decide to march into anime town and teach them a lesson, the other factions in anime town would probably let them pass and do their thing. "We don't care for them either" sort of behavior. Just as long as those knights don't cause any shit with the other factions they do care about, it's okay if borders are crossed to deal with a fandom that isn't favored by any faction or larger group.

    Outcast fandoms anyone?

The way I see it though, you can split these into some major genres and work your way down from there. Some subgenres may be kind of floating out there, but not every little thing will have a fullblown chunk of the city.

Like, you'd have the Anime-Japan genre which breaks down into fans of anime and manga and their cosplayers, then you'd have lolitas and their love of high fashion and frills, and further still, the reenactors and lovers of all thing samurai and Japanese tradition. And, of course, these break down further into fans of specific series or whatever. At a whole faction, they might share a certain amount of camaraderie, perhaps getting together to celebrate some japanese holiday, but for the most part they just sort of coexist.

While on this subject, I suppose it's worth noting that there isn't much of a video game genre or faction, unless you count LAN-party types and major League Gamers, but I see them as the one subculture who wouldn't set down roots at InfiniCon. Perhaps certain large tournaments may be hosted there annually, but gaming is the sort of thing that is somewhat universal across fandoms and genres.

Pokemon and Touhou slip more into anime and "Japanese Culture" or at least "Japanese Media."

As for TF2 being popular.. well.. it's very successful game, but it's popularity, at least in terms of number of people at cons dressed as characters, has something more to do with the relative simplicity of some of the costumes, more than the overwhelming popularity of it as a fandom.

I'd also say that, at least in real life, all the gay fanart and squeeing fangirls has more to do with anime fan behavior being applied to something that has a cast of easily identifiable and distinct characters. To an extent, this same phenomenon happened with Batman and the Bat-family for a while... It's hard to call that sort of behavior the act of a comic book fan.

More wary than distraught. Like I said earlier, I've had a project like this spiral out of control on me once before because too many people had too many different ideas on where to drag the concept.

For the time being, I'd like to stick to discussion of InfiniCon as a setting. We can figure out how to quantify and mechanically implement things once we're more sure of how all the set pieces fit together.

Right now, I just like these hypothetical discussions. Bring up the Gamer thing and I didn't even really consider TF2 or CoD or even WoW as their own thing, so just bouncing that idea out there turned up some interesting concepts.

The WoW fans, for instance, might have a pretty positive relationship with certain kinds of LARPers based on their shared love of ornate and decorative armor. Likewise for Warhammer fans, who share their love for ENORMOUS SHOULDERS.

The main thing keeping gamers away from the city would be lack of internet/computers to play games on, due to the scarce resources problem discussed earlier. If it's in the middle of the US that problem might be resolved, but then why are materials for costumes, etc still scarce?

I suppose you can just invoke game logic (it needs to be this way because the game will be more fun), but it would be nicer if we could get a reasonable solution to it.

I hadn't really given any though to the mind behind the Con but I do have a couple interpretations that have come to mind since starting the first thread last night.

The first is somewhat more grounded. You know those sweepstakes where some lucky shit wins a million dollars every year for the rest of their life? Instead of once a year, some lucky neckbeard won a million every week for the rest of his life.

The first thing he thinks to do is rent out every possible building he can and put together his own convention. At first, it's a meager weekend with a small group, but that wasn't enough. So he kept setting up weekends and eventually bought the local hotel. Soon, his small gatherings start attracting more and more fans from out of town. These little gatherings blossomed into a convention, which only grew as the owner began to buy up every place in town, investing in new buildings and businesses to support his thriving convention. Before long, as the city grew and developed due to the owner's increasingly intelligent use of his money, InfiniCon grew until it eventually began running all year round.
You know the saying. If you build it, they will come.

The other idea is less developed, but more in tune with the crazy, high fantasy, reality bending version.
Some sort of supernatural entity did it. Magicked the whole fucking place right up. Perhaps they magicked it into legitimate existence through purchasing of land and so on, but it is not something that came about due to mortal means. Perhaps it was just a small unknown con that grew longer and bigger with each passing year. A con with a history spanning back decades further than some people care to realize.

    >>17614348
I like the first more personally. 'A god did it' seems like a lazy explanation. Maybe a few supernatural entities come along and screw around at the 'con every so often, which is why it persists and why there are such crazy effects on highly immersed people, but I think it works better as starting out non-magical.

I'm imagining this sort of layout (I'm not an artfag, sorry!), where the main convention center started out, and more and more stuff sort of was piled onto it as demand increased.

Farther out is more seedier, and the convention center is very busy. I'm not sure how parking/cars would work out, though.

I think the explanation that people who consider themselves gamers above all else, the kind of people who want to do nothing buy play games wouldn't go out of their way to move to a new, expensive, crazy ass city full of costumed dorks just so you can get a job dealing with said dorks to pay the bills so you can sit at home and play videogames.

As for the scarcity of internet and games and computers, I imagine the idea of living in a city like this is way less attractive to nerds of all kind without internet of tv or electricity. Infinity City would have to have these things, no question.

As for the scarcity of certain materials and goods, like fabrics, wood and shit for props, and the like would be rare because everyone is scrambling to get them. You've got half a million nerds and most of them want costumes and props and there just isn't enough coming into the city fast enough to meet demands.

Though, this may open up an industry for costume and prop reclaim.

I make props of my own, and I've actually scrapped a few of my old large projects and stripped them down for much needed materials before. PVC pipe and lengths of wire, bits of velcro...

The hentai and /d/ seems a little out of place. I'd think the cosplayers and anime people would get annoyed at them being as close/closer to the con centre than them.

Given the size, maybe there should be smaller areas where cons are held as well (for when the main area is full/wouldn't give permission). Or is that map just an overview, with large areas only shown?

I would have thought that artists/craftspeople would tend to get 'snatched up' by one of the groups, and live in their area of the city rather than having their own district. A few of them might be well known and good enough to work for multiple fandoms, but not many.

I think it's right on with the idea that not just fans, but devoted members of a fandom would be in this city, not just "gamers".

The loss of materials would be something that would make sense happening later on, and where the actual game would be set for the players (2-8 years after the start of the entire thing), where materials are beginning to be scarce and fanctions (factions + fandoms, aren't I clever!) have more influence because of this.

Also, internet cafes could be common on the outer parts of town, and routers would be placed around the convention area to solve the internet problem. A sort of instant messenger could also be set up for communication, but now I'm delving into mechanics.

The map is just a random idea that came to me, and more meant as districts. And now that you mention it, /d/ stuff would be more akin to something happening beneath the conventions, in the undercon. A lot of the seedier or disliked factions would hang out there.

Speaking of that, why is the undercon there? Is it like the Disneyworld tunnels, used for transport but eventually forgotten and used for evil? Or why else?

The undercon was never really my idea, but I can see if being a part of this city. Most highrises, and large structures often need basements that go several stories down for structural reasons, and also to house the various immense electrical, ventilation, and plumping systems.

With all these apartments and hotels and convention centers around and all of them potentially built at the behest of one person, it only seems natural that these basements would be connected. Perhaps even connected to a deeper levels to allow access to the sewers and electrical network that ties the city together.

    Just some thoughts.

This sounds like a good idea. In wisconsin and colder parts of the countries, basements are used to keep pipes from freezing in the winter, and frost from damaging things. I'd assume that the tunnels would help prevent this in the same way basements do.

Maybe more tunnels were built to help security forces move around and general transport, but eventually it was too much upkeep and the tunnels were forgotten?

actually there are more than one good reason to build tunnels.
First of all you need tunnels for the sewers. That's a whole lot of tunnels right there.
    Then for transportation too.
Maybe you will have tunnels for things like cables and pipes too but you will try to stuff them in the existing ones or just put them in the ground if possible.
Then you will need service tunnels for existing stuff, like for the transportation, hospitals, ICBM silos and other minor things.
    etc.

And then if you rebuild a few things demolish some building maybe you will have tunnels that you don't need anymore...

Also you could build tunnels for the underground feeling. I mean think about it if it's a town for nerdy fun and Cons then there MUST be tunnels with zombies and mutants and monsters and dark

Fits in with the founder trying to reclaim his hometown. Add in people making shortcuts, homes, secret passages and all sorts of other stuff underground and you could easily get a sprawling undercity.

But I think this is still not enough... any other specific ideas?

Also there is the problem how the fans get their money?of course they could do little quests and such but when you think about it who will do the regular works? There is only a finite number of maintenance workers.
Maybe the nurse cosplayers could work at the hospitals and such but I think there will be a "few" jobs that don't have related fandoms. So should we try to explain this or just handwave it away somehow?

It tooks an unusually long time to post my last reply.. so.. Just one more.

On some level, Infinity City has to function like a real city. Seeing as most will never dream of commuting to work, that leaves all of the residents to fill positions are restaurant managers, chefs/burger flippers, cafe maids and waitresses, retail workers, managers, janitors, security workers, messengers and deliverymen, and so on.

At a glance, this seems kind of boring, because these are all mundane jobs, but the prospect is not just simply taking up an everyday job.. but getting to work an everyday job in the most surreal and fantastical place in the world.

I imagine during the initial years of InfiniCon's inception, the crazy bastards running the show went about hiring people to act as consultants and trainers to establish a public works infrastructure. Like, hiring a police chief security expert to train a group of volunteers as legitimate security specialists who could actually handle the job of training and hiring their own men to enforce the law of the city.

Likewise, there are also the less typical jobs, like Bodyguards being hired to protect one of the city's greatest and most beautiful cosplay divas, for instance.

You can set a limit cap on the Respawn ability by making it stat based like the Barbarian Rage ability. Video Gamers can activate respawn at any time (even in reaction to another's action while it isn't their turn in combat) but it only lasts for a limited time based on whatever stat they have. You can set it to their IMM level. The higher their immersion the more turns they can keep respawning. But once the well runs dry and you're still in combat, you better be careful or the InfiniCon General Hospital ICU or morgue will be where you respawn next.

Remember anyone in IC who gains powers will never be their ideal equivalent. You will be closer to your chosen fandom and pretty powerful but numerous batmen with High IMM out there will never BE Comic-level Batman.

    >>17615139

Explain if we can without hurting the setting, handwave if not. While it would be great for this to have a consistent backstory that makes sense, having a fun setting is more important.

The higher level fans can probably get money from the lower level fans, who would need to have jobs, even if not full time. Maybe there are a number of industries in the city which use the con-goers as cheap part-time workers. Dunno what they'd produce though, and it seems immersion-breaking (in real life, not in terms of game mechanics, though it might have an effect there too) to have the players' characters doing a mundane job in such a fantastical city. If you're going for crazy shit coming from higher immersion levels, I'm sure there are many industries which would benefit from having magic applied to them, but can't see many high immersion fans doing the jobs, which they'd see as beneath them. Having part time jobs would work for low magic, maybe have the city mostly self-sufficient for high magic? So each group has a few people who grow food and make cheap materials but most high quality things come from outside and are bought with money from tourists or from selling fan made costumes and accessories.

It would be an exempt neutral zone. Probably the only neutral zone where High IMM battling fandoms are not only allowed but encouraged under the strict guidelines of IC. Let the masses vent their aggressions here so to speak.

As battling between fandoms in neutral zones is heavily policed by Security Staff and expressly forbidden. Battling fandoms within their own zones is technically still forbidden by IC law, but obviously harder to police with Security Staff sticking to the Neutral/Normal zones more. Still doesn't mean that Security won't step in once the ruckus gets too unruly.

Fandom territories should have a charter with the city council to allow them to take up arms in defense of their own members and territory from another fandoms aggression and police their own territory anyway.

When I was talking about high and low magic, I was talking about two different settings, since it hasn't yet been decided whether the inhabitants will have powers close to the characters in the franchise, if not better, when at high immersion, or if immersion merely allows the use of a few weak powers, and only if you have high immersion.

I've thought about this since yesterday and I just want to clarify something. "Banishment from Infinity City" DOES NOT mean "Banishment to the Undercons". Technically as written "Banishment from Infinity City for heinous and dangerous crimes against the City itself and its inhabitants (intentionally broad definition), only means punishment by DEPORTATION from the city proper to the any destination in the world. (Or just outside the city limits. Nothing like living in the Undercon Ghettos)

And this is where the Undercon came in. My theory was that the Undercons were created by dispossessed fandoms who had lost favor with IC. Given the choice between deportation back to their normal mundane lives away from IC forever or staying in defiance of IC laws. Some chose the latter and thus the first Ghettos of Undercon on the outskirts of IC were founded and the Hives of the Undercons were later created deep beneath the foundations of Infinity City. Both have somewhat similar but uniquely distinct cultures.

Belief powers the fandomites Immersion. It's what allows them to bend reality itself to fit their warped fantasies. A Jedi Knight who picks up a bolter and a Chaos Lord who picks up a Lightsaber, both swag items switched owners should still work pretty much as intended regardless of who's wielding them because their owner's and collective fandom believe in them. Collective fandom Immersion levels should work to maintain and power hard copy stuff like replica chainswords, gundam suits, .50Cal Light Barrets etc. The more powerful your fandom, the more maintainable your swag is around IC. Unlike Undercon gear which loses their potency the farther away they are from their creator fandoms and the Undercons proper. But most SWAG should work within the city limits themselves.

Fandom Powers OTOH, now that takes Personal Immersion IMHO. A vidya gamers Respawn power lasts a number of combat turns equal to his Immersion score. Space Marine's cosplayer can boost his strength to incredible levels using his Immersion Score. Think a combination of Blood potency from VtR or does someone have another suggestion?

The only time they should stop working as their owner's believed is when they encounter Normals, leave the lC limits far beyond the Ghettos or if the fandom is completely wiped from IC existence. The most common counters to Swag Gear are the Organizer Staff, Security and Vendors and any people who have high disbelief/low immersion. Their grip on normal structured reality is what protects them (to some degree) against the reality warping powers of the fandomites. Be warned higher ranking Normals have Very Low Immersion. Their time spent in the structured reality of an organization and refusal to accept the reality bending powers of the fandomites makes them resistant to their powers. Though there are many cases that even militant Normals have succumbed to the fandomites. All this tension is relatively kept to a high simmer due to long held respect for the laws of the Con and Normals and Fandomites needing each other to exist and keep the city running. Conflicts are common but rarely ever escalate to outright rebellion.

On rare occasions there are some dissident factions in the city forming extremist lobbyist groups proposing that Fandomites should take the reigns of IC from the Normals as their birthright. Their strongholds are in the Undercon but they have spies and sympathizers among the mainstream fandoms. Slowly gathering their support to overthrow the established heirarchy.

A small but powerful conspiracy among the Normals composed of Normal staffer's, citizens, and sleeper or "Fu Men" fandomites known as the Vanguard Empirical keep order within the city and are pushing for even more extreme pogroms of control and "Normalizing the dissident population" and on the surface protecting Normals and the City from itself.

Note: Obviously I am in favor of a High Immersion/Magic setting, but low immersion/magic would be fine too even though such low-power stories would fit fine even with belief powers implemented. YMMV

I like to brainstorm fluff more than mechanics but I'm no slouch there either. Fluff is just more fun for me.

Here's some added bit of fluff for the Origins of Infinity City:

No one knows why the laws of physics are broken in the mystical bounds of Infinity City. It's a matter of study and mystery from various scientific organizations around the world. And all anyone really knows is that when the zone was first discovered, it measured no larger than a roughly sized football pitch (not the American version). The scientific team were mostly geologists originally researching why this remote zone of the Earth had one of the lowest gravity forces on the planet. Two of the scientists researching the reality bending zone were huge starwars geeks and one of them was surprised when one day his light saber prop accidentally burned and wounded his buddy while they were mock dueling. As soon as he disbelieved the light saber could work, it went back to a harmless prop. Later another comic-book geek from the same scientific team believed he could create constructs using his replica Green Lantern power ring as an experiment. He was able to make short lived and small constructs and the phenomenon shocked the world not to mention the scientific team.

News of this spread to all corners and eventually some enterprising nerds thought to hold a Con in the Zone. These first neckbeards (that included some women) were the Founders. They were brave and more than a little insane. They held the first InfiniCon (Old Slogan: Where the possibilities are Infinite) there year after year (much to the chagrin of the scientific team which made their own organization in present day IC and continues to study there to this day in the most prominent educational institution of the city. The McAllister-Zachowski Institute of Infinity City which was named after the two Starwars loving scientists who first discovered the zone's properties.) An invite to this exclusive and hard to reach Con was highly sought after. It was the Oscars of Conventions. However due to the logistical and financial nightmare of holding a Con in such a remote area of the world this guaranteed the Con attendees were often small and never went beyond the original boundaries of the zone.

After three years of herculean effort running InfiniCon things changed when the Con-goers realized the boundaries were expanding. At first by a few feet then later to dozens of kilometers seemingly the more Con-goers attended each year. Over time some chose to erect permanent habitations within and around the zone to "keep the Con alive" Pretty soon the extent of the zone's powers took a dramatic turn when certain permanent Con-habitants noticed their own custom dwellings began to take on a more refined look and function despite a distinct lack of technology or science outside of simply adding more props on the surface.

Some of the effects were sudden and some were gradual but others all experienced the same thing relative to their own fandoms.

With this the media and Pop culture industries of the world took notice and began to send delegations and set up shop in the newly emergent "Con-city" as it was called back then. Everyone from the Music industry, Movies, Comics, Video Games, and others from various parts of the world began to flock to the new mecca of Pop Culture. Within a year corporate stocks sky-rocketed and the world markets were flooded with the rising popularity of their products as fans of all stripes all over the world began to clamor for more and more pop culture dross.

For a time the world was flooded with cheap knockoff after knockoff as the corporations tried to manufacture more for the endless appetite of Fans. Unfortunately, these cheap drab corporate creations could not compare to the originality and spark of imagination from true artists.

For every Numa Numa singing retard, Furry and Twihard fan there were legions more DBZ neckbeard, Warhams Fanatic, and the odd browncoat to oppose them in the walls of Infinity City. In over 2 decades of running the Con and backed by Corporate Sponsors and powered by the imagination of its rabid consumer populace it soon grew to a metropolis to rival even NYC in size and Hollywood in spledor. Though as the economy of IC was largely dependent on derivations and creations from other places it slowly began to eclipse hollywood, Bollywood, J-pop, K-Pop, Anime etc.

Pretty soon artists and craftsmen decided to move to Infinity City to pursue their imaginations and their craft. Now not only did fans have a place to call their own all the days of their life but their own idols and inspirations in the flesh would walk the same streets they did. Robert Kirkman would rub elbows with zombie fans of all stripes, brain intact while the creators of Mad Men could smoke and drink in tailored suits with their own fans as well as fans of the Simpsons, Burn Notice, and others of TV land. Wil Wheaton lives in a nice house and is a negotiator and public lobbyist for many fandom groups in IC. (Except the Trekkies who refuse to have anythging to do with him) Here imagination was the soul of a city-state and artistry it's main product.

It's all here in Infinity City.

I agree that some of those concerns need answering and I would like to offer some suggestions in the way of an answer. What if the main product of IC was artistry? TV shows, movies, comics, toys etc. Similar to Hollywood or other pop culture media mecca.

Most of the worlds pop culture products would be made here while corporations managed everything from the outside internationally. In such an economy and with the magic/ low "reality" bending properties of the IC zone fandomites with high immersion would actually get to live like celebrities of their own. Being inspirations for billions more living in other parts of the world.

Low-level fandomites can earn a living supporting themselves and their fandoms by holding down jobs even if it breaks immersion to some extent. For example a loli-girl can work some days as a french maid waitress. She lives in a condo-apartment with other loli's who share rent and on her rest days she can loli it up in a G-suit or whatever. Mundane alter-ego most days and BAMF some days. Granted it takes awhile to pump your Immersion levels to power your powers after breaking immersion for awhile, but that balance of life is crucial for anyone living. Not to mention you can simply say you can accumulate immersion overtime even though you lose some of it like Vampire blood points. Want to pump up immersion? Cosplay/Roleplay some more. Want to be able to eat and have a roof over your head? lose some immersion but hold down a 9-5 job 3-4 days/week. It's a careful balancing act but it can be done.

Sample Mechanics: Lose one immersion pt/day not cosplaying.

When cosplaying or in-costume/character gain an amount of immersion pts equal to certain acts that would be in-character but all must be legal. You can normally gain an amount of Immersion pts. equal to every 5 hours spent in-character. (Sleeping does not count unless you're a Snorlax)

Note: We can draw up a set of general meta feats/perks so that fandom players can increase the frequency of immersion pt gain. It's all in your hands /tg/

Technically you could even gain "immersion pts" "illegally" (Little Sister cosplayer actually harvesting Adam). Lookout for ConSec though.

Thing is, most people at IC are there to cosplay as their favorite characters. To make a new movie you would have to get a group of fans for the work, before it was even released. That's not even mentioning the dampening effect normals have on the powers of the cosplayers. With the number of people it takes to make a movie there, I doubt the cosplayers could do much at all, especially if we're taking the low magic setting.

There is also the problem with the cosplayers 'becoming' their characters. If their minds are also affected by cosplay, they wouldn't be very willing to do anything their character wouldn't normally do (how would you feel about playing yourself, but doing so inaccurately?), which makes it hard to get them to stick to a script. Doing stuff they don't believe their character would do could also hurt their immersion.

Also, I'd prefer to keep the magical properties of the IC something of a secret in game. The people inside IC know about it, and there are rumours outside of IC which bring people there, but most of the world just dismisses them as the delusions of the fanboyish people who go to IC, especially since the magic tends to not work right around or against normals. The normals tend to go into IC only as long as they need to, and anyone who has been there long enough to get more than a glimpse of the magic there is almost certainly staying anyway.

Also, if the magic of IC is a secret, why is there still the undercon? You'd think that removing dangerous gangs from such a valuable resource would be one of the first things to do.

Ive just figured ou the perfect character to play as. A Companion of one of the high-immersion Doctor Who RolePlayers.
    1. you get to bounce around InfiniCon having madcap adventures.
    2. You already have perfect immersion, you are roleplaying as a normal person so you stay at 100 percent immersion without needing to lose sanity or hygiene.
    3. While you are at 100% character immersion you are still a normal with 0% immersion, creating a paradox in that you cannot be harmed by other peoples immersion fueled powers but you will be able to use some aspects of the Con (Those linked to the Doctor you are traveling with)
    4. YOu get to live in the Con and become a part of it in all its glory, seeing the best and the worst while stil remaining yourself. There is no loss of personality and no risk of going down the insanity/full-characterisation route.

With the con being placed in the mid-west maybe we could be closer to the great lakes? Consider that Chicago was built on a swamp and thus is still sinking to this day. A lot of the original first floors are now basements and sub-basements. Some of them were just connected due to being in the same complexes, others run under streets to neighboring complexes that were owned by the same company. Still more were connected because of the 1920's and bootlegging. There's literally spiderwebs of underground complexes in Chicago, I find it rather fascinating.

At any rate, that could explain the existence of the Undercon when coupled with sewers.

Also, there could be an abandoned subway system.

Well I was thinking Normals would have a resistant abilities but not necessarily "dampen" cosplayers in a broad scope like an actual dampening field. This is where mechanics could set the boundaries of the setting.

My idea is the artists can be normals and cosplayers themselves making new stuff. There's nothing preventing them from doing that and with the powers the effects department doesn't have to break the budget so often unless massive CGI is involved. Obviously people are still people even those pretending to be fictional characters. I suspect most can still function (albeit awkwardly) no matter how high their immersion. So normals wouldn't necessarily be a hindrance to cosplayers even if they were working together.

As someone suggested Disbelief can double for low immersion or the anti-immersion . I would picture if a fandomite assaulted a Normal Con Security with his light saber, the Normal would still take damage although significantly less depending on their Disbelief. A normal assaulting some Invisible Woman cosplayer can deal more damage to bypass her invisible force field based on their disbelief. And vice versa.

Creating a Dampening/Null Zone effect within IC itself would be possible but should take an experienced and high ranking Normal with high powers of disbelief. And should only be limited to a small area like within 20 feet or so. Someone who's faith in the structured laws of the universe is unshakable to the point that reality bending virtually cannot exist anywhere near these people.

Conversely high immersion fandomites are the most powerful of their group by a combination of effort, talent, sheer will and dedication. Their abilities defy comprehension and are awe-inspiring but take a lot of will to materialize and the longer they fight the weaker they become even if they can summon an Iron Halo with their Crozius or cast a fireball which can take down a bunch of Normals who are less disciplined with their thoughts and emotions.

In a battle of wills, the one with the strongest will prevails.

I think that a sufficiently normalised area should be enough to put a damper on the powers of cosplayers. So areas like the security guard headquarters, outside of IC, carefully coreographed movie sets, etc. Groups of normals would also have a dampening effect, just like groups of cosplayers would boost the effects of each other's powers. Going into completely unrelated territory would similarly reduce powers (though nowhere near as strongly, since both groups are still cosplayers). So, for example, a narutard going into another anime group's turf would be weaker, but not much. The same narutard going into a D&D area would be greatly weakened. If he went into a normalised area, he would be barely above normal, unless he was extremely powerful outside of it. The effects of such would be decreased if the cosplayers are in a large group, or if the faction whose turf they are on is significantly less influential than their faction. Areas which are public or unclaimed have little effect on power, unless stongly associated with some group (a ramen stand which narutards frequent would have some of the effects of their territory). Newly claimed areas are initially no different from public areas, but grow in strength over time.

This would mean that an area made into a movie set would be greatly normalised due to normals working on it all the time, and unless the actors outnumbered the movie workers, they would have a hard time doing much.

That might work if you could find some willing cosplayers and teach them how to use movie-quality recording equipment. Alternatively, ask them in a way which fits in with their immersed personality (so for example to a space marine: "We require you to capture footage of this battle so we may archive it for combat training purposes).

I still think that having it relatively unknown to the rest of the world provides a better setting, since having it well-known creates a large number of problems which need to be handwaved away and adds more normal people, with less cosplayers, who are the main focus of the setting.

Unfortunately from my understanding of the setting, having more normals than cosplayers and making the properties of the zone public is the only way to plausibly create this city out of virtually nowhere and in a short time frame revolving around Con-culture. More normals would be needed for the day-to-day running of the city.

And if the city somehow came about a long time ago and Con-culture only became prevalent later due to something that amazing affecting the inhabitants without anyone going public would require some hand-waving of its own that I find hard to explain away.

What sort of problems or concerns that need to be hand-waved in a public IC setting need to addressed in your opinion? Maybe we can hammer it out and justify it in mutual discussion.

Main problem I see is that making it public destroys most elements that make the setting interesting. The setting has been characterised as having a lightly buried dark side, and having a shortage of space and resources.

Its effects being public knowledge would make it a huge vacation spot. While that increases the demand for property, it means that the area would get vastly increased security, especially when scientists decide to start studying the effects of the area. That means no random fights between groups in unpoliced areas (because there would be no unpoliced areas left), no overt stealing of resources, no feuds between groups. The undercon would cease to exist, since police would just be sent in en masse to deal with it.

It being a hot vacation spot would also vastly undermine the concept of scarce resources, since there would be a massive flow of money into the area.

I just cannot see the effect being public knowledge without the cosplayers being driven out by increasing prices (remember, these guys aren't rich), or becoming merely performers for a crowd of tourists, rather than being the people the city revolves around.

This is all assuming the place isn't shut down for public safety or research or something.

If you can solve these without making the setting sound boring as hell though, go for it.

Indeed a tourist spot would mean money influx into the city which would help it thrive. We can agree that would be a good thing all things considered with respect to the setting. Scientists could probably encourage cosplayers to exist and thrive simply as a part of their study.

I think IC would have more than enough high quality hotels, also the price will be high... for any outsider. This is IC after all and they need the extra money as most of the inhabitants are not that great with this job thing.
So we can say that IC will try to milk every penny from outsiders but it still won't be enough henche the shortage.

If newspapers can look into it and not find obvious holes in their powers scientists will look into it. Maybe the respected ones will not at first, but if other scientists fail to solve it, they will get interested eventually. I mean, they've done experiments to prove palm reading doesn't work, and that has less evidence than the powers at IC would have.

Increased security would be a given among the Normals, Corporations, and various factions involved. In-fighting among factions however would be a well-known and badly kept secret. Anyone suddenly gaining the powers inherent in IC would be pretty blatant and keeping mum about them would break Immersion for many which would be another reason why keeping it secret would be even harder to pull off.

The real issue here is the perception of how much crime/interesting misadventures would take place once loads of security were in place in IC. My answer is plenty.

The fandoms in total may not outnumber the Normals but they will most likely rival them. Granted most of the crimes would probably be committed by Underconner's but Con people by themselves are prone to some vices. Piracy, certain amount of civil disobedience and issues with authority add gaining magical powers to that and the potential for hijinks only increases.

Why not make the accumulation of Immersion powers and living the dream the hardest and most sought after commodity to obtain? Cosplayers come for the Immersion. It's the main selling point of why they come to the city. It's why they do what they do and it's what they fight for. They fight to get immersion, they fight each other because of it. Since power in IC is believed to be tied to the land itself the more land and influence in IC they control the more they can power their immersion and themselves around it. And the land can still be a scarce premium since we can stipulate that while the mystical boundaries of IC is spreading. It's spreading far too slowly to accomodate all of the inhabitants and Con-goers who like to stick to the central hub methinks so overpopulation is still a huge concern. Not to mention the problems of poverty of the inhabitants as you suggest that cosplayers may be a part of.
    >> Anonymous 01/21/12(Sat)08:53 No.17617948
    >>17617931
And just because we've got 7/11's and Mcdonalds on every corner catering to the populace doesn't mean that the city won't resort to violence on the drop of hat. This is kind of a strawman example but Devil's Night in LA can happen in IC considering all the ethnicities, nationalities, not to mention factions of the Fandoms.

Security can try to stop conflicts from happening but clandestine fights among the cosplayers would be a lot more plausible due to the powers that would increase probability of undetectable crime and unpredictability of policing the populace. Unless IC would be run like V for Vendetta, civil unrest and crimes would still be a given.

Think of it like old Gold mine Boomtown. Everyone knows where the gold is and everyone wants to get in on it, Law enforcement and international interest not withstanding. Harsh policing of the inhabitants would be hard to justify to the international community even for scientific reasons and to protect corporate interests due to constant widespread media attention to the worlds Pop Culture mecca.

Underconners by and large would have a large negative reputation but think of them as squatters. Everyone doesn't like them and everyone doesn't wanna be near them but mistreating them courtesy of the law is still frowned upon. These people would be your quintessential cosplayer gone bad and who can blame them?

They may be very disliked but so long as they don't bother anybody, keep low and stay one step ahead of the law they'll keep popping up. Besides the possibility that Underconners are squatting due to being "in exile" have we considered the possibility of Underconners also consisting of illegal immigrants? Then you can always say that it is some kind of viral ad for IC or some upcoming movie.
Also don't forget that in some interpretation norms see the cosplayers as silly fuckwits and see nothing magical. At all.

The Governments weren't actually trying to evict people from those two places though. When they did, what happened was "But after 30 years, the Chinese finally got it in their heads that Crime Fortress might not be a good thing to have right next to Hong Kong, so they tore it down and built a park."

And if China (Yes, not exactly a paragon of morality, but still) can get away with tearing down a city just because it's too near one of theirs, the US can surely evict people from a major tourist destination, assuming they are actually breaking laws (By squatting. I'm pretty sure that is actually illegal). At the very least, that would move the squatters outside of the IC proper. If they keep coming back, well, concreting the entrances into the tunnels (that lead outside of the city) should keep most of them well out.

However, it seems everyone but me wants a popular tourist hub, so I shall concede the point. What should we discuss next?

We appear to be talking about different cities then. My imagined city was a little more magic heavy than what you describe (though would by no means have newbs slinging around fireballs). The city you're describing sounds fine, and would probably not attract major tourist attention since there would likely be no substantiated reports of supernatural powers.

Most of what we've been discussing is if the powers are obvious enough for people to come because of them, rather than because of the con. Either that or I completely misunderstood some posts.

well currently people are talking about two different city mostly.
One of them is the the low magic city where any power that is not basically some minor cantrip is hard to come by and only the hardcore fans have it
The other one is the high-magic city with awesome powers at every corners and everyone is more or less what he/she is dressed as.

OP basically likes the low-magic setting (or maybe with no magic at all) and I think that the high magic stuff will just make it into a clusterfuck and not believable at all. It will make more problems than fun. But that's just my own opinion everyone interpret the setting as they want.

Fair enough. I admit it was hard to justify the setting I was advocating with the points you raised. However I did suggest the idea of Undercon Ghettos on the outskirts of IC and how Underconners can be tolerated to some extent. So that's one way to go.

Next? I'm thinking of brainstorming the fluff for the various districts of Infinity City.

    >>17618128
I advocate for a middle of the road. High magic would amount to High immersion cosplayers being able to create limited powers effects based on their Immersion score and power points. Supermen cosplayers can lift a truck if their immersion is high enough and they had enough power points. They could even levitate for awhile if they wish but always the effects are temporary. When they run out they're back to normal costumed squibs.

I think every major anime has more than a few cosplayers but maybe Naruto and Bleach has the most. Not sure about it.
Also we will have a fuckton of SW fans and trekkies
Then wh40k has a big fanbase but I'm not entirely sure how much of them are cosplaying (although I've seen hundreds of wh40k cosplay pics so it can't be a small number)
Every major videogame has it's own cosplayers too but I think most of them are just temporary or small in numbers, if I have to guess I think Assassin Creed has the most cosplayers among them.
Then we already said the Dr. Who cosplayers
    Plus of course the larpers

This idea sounds good to me. It gives high immersion characters some useful benefits, without making them broken-OP. I would probably add some passive benefits as well though, like boosted stats and minor changes to their body and personality to make them more in-character (their mind remains theirs, it doesn't change major things, but a space marine character will be more loyal and fearless than he was before)

It should be a mix. The setting itself should not have a fixed location, and should have a very DRYH-feel to it. Endless corridors, inaccurate maps, inhuman security and "catering" services, strange announcements, more hotel rooms than any building should be able to hold...

Power level for the actual cosplayers? Should vary but with high-magic rare. For everything that could pass itself off as an actual alien or Jedi, there are a hundred cosplayers in cardboard costumes.

No magic at all is a bit pointless. There should definitely be something a bit off about Infinite Con.

Why should it be? There is always a possibility that there is no magic at all but everyone thinks that there is some kind of magic. This way it would be as interesting as with magic, and more plausible.

Low to no magic is a valid interpretation but having the city exist purely for running an infinite Con without something extraordinary to justify it is hard to call plausible IMO.

Low Magic setting IC while similar to OP's vision of differing cosplaying fans fighting it out with their rivals could devolve into Jedi Knights and Trekkies thinking they're magically unique when they aren't. Making the setting too realistic falls into a pitfall of everyone buying into their own personal fantasy while actually fighting with SCAR's and p90's.

It could look like COD MW except people are dressed as animu's, Jedi Knights, etc.

I sat at my desk, in my dingy little office, and sighed. It was a good line of work, playing a detective in such a seedy city, but sometimes it brought two characters like the two glaring daggers at one another across my cramped little room. I opened my mouth. "OK. Mister.. Techpriest Apocryphal, is it? And Techhpriest Jorrisar? I brought you both here to explain the situation to you. First. Apocryphal. You hired me to look into Jorrisar and see if he had any of this.. heretic stuff." Jorrisar slammed his fist down on the table, denting the already bruised furniture. "I knew it! Your days are numbered, Apocryphal!" I sighed. "But they Mr. Jorrisar approached me to look into you, Mr. Apocryphal. And here it is - BOTH of you are heretics." I dropped the piles of photographs on the table, with the evidence plain as day. The two of them looked at the pictures, then at me, then at each other, and pure hate poured out on their faces. With a leap, the two of them were on their feet, pistols blazing and mechanics whirling. I dove under the desk, just in time to hear two cries of pain and two thumps on the ground. Great. Now who was going to pay me for my time?

I crawled out from under my desk to see the two of them locked in the rictus of Character Death, and went over to begin rifling Apocryphal's (or was it Jorrisar's?) pockets. "H-hey! What're you doing?" I sighed. "You're dead. Don't break immersion, and when I'm done I'll call the hospital." I snagged both billfolds, and a small solid gold pin shaped like a winged skull off one of them, who stared at me with a hurt look. Finally I stood, picked up the phone, and called the Medics to come carry the 'dead' away. Turned out better than I thought it would - they had a couple hundred dollars on them between them. It's enough to keep the lights on another week.

    CORPORATE PRESENCE
    Nope.
The city isn't nearly big enough to start housing factories or animation and movie studios. On top of that it starts forcing con-goers out of the city to make room for regular workers and businessmen who aren't even there to attend a single convention event, thus draining money from InfiniCon.

I don't see why there wouldn't be people taking lots of pictures and video of the crazy shit that goes on, though. In fact, certain people might even be able to pay their bills solely from blog revenue as they keep people up to date on all the tasty drama, latest incidents, and hilarious accidents. Attendees would want this information to stay up to date and outsiders would love to read it just to see what's going in the city.

    TOURISM
The tourists in this situation would mostly be con-goers who are only staying temporarily for the larger annual events. Though, even without rides or giant attractions, the city would attract the occasional gawking tourists who want to try everything the city has to offer. Buy kitchy souvenirs at the convention hall, participate in a mock battle at the LARP/Renaissance district, dine at a Maid café, get their pictures taken in bright wigs and silly costumes.

For some, this could mean a good source of occasional income by offering a tourist package once they've secured the permission and cooperation of the different factions.

If we make it realistic that doesn't really mean we have to take it seriously at the same time.
Also I'm okay with low magic thing but when someone starts throwing trucks on a weekly basis it's not low magic anymore.

As I said explaining a setting with too much magic is even more harder than a no magic one.
In high magic you can explain the whole why is it there thing a little easier but you need to explain why is it STILL there in it's current form. Something that most of the high magic systems just handwave away. It's a pet peeve of mine...

But anyway we don't need to explain everything, it's a game after all but we still need some vague ideas about the important things.

Well it was just an example that places that vaguely similar to IC does exist in the real world. Of course those places aren't running 24/7 and not count as a whole city but we are making an imaginary world, we can cheat that much as long as we don't overdo it.

In a high fantasy version of this, I'd rather the whole reality warping magic things be something that is somewhat known, like outside parties might be able to identify the abilities of certain people as superhuman or unnatural, but within the walls of the city, it doesn't seem out of place. Something about the ambiance of the city just makes that awareness and concern grow duller.

In that same way, people are less aware of how it works, though. If everyone knew that all you needed to get super powers was to just keep thinking that you're actually a cartoon character then there wouldn't be a single person around who isn't full of magic.

Instead, it's a subtle change over time, as a person starts to embody their character, others start to perceive them less as a person in a costume, but more as a person who just IS that way. So much like their character that they embody their abilities.

For these reasons, I'd think the idea of scientists or anyone actively researching the mysterious shit of Infinity City would be out of place or just disruptive to the overall concept.
