52 KB Primordial Evolution Game Indonesian Gentleman 03/26/12(Mon)21:27 No.18469745
Hello again! Let us continue with the evolutions, shall we?

    previous thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/18447772/

    The rules are simple:
    1) evolve a creature by modifying their picture and giving a plausible reason.
    2) only a single modification/upgrade may be made per 'update'.
    3) you can choose different species to upgrade.
    4) I'll be plopping some events which you can adapt your creatures to, and decide if any updates are invalid.

There's a much larger choice of creatures to evolve for this current game, as well as two plants!

First creature we have is the frowg. It is an amphibious creature living in the moss swamps, which catch small worems by using small electrical shocks generated by its large front legs.

         File: 1332811860.png-(30 KB, 500x500, wesck.png)
    30 KB
The next creature we have is the wesck, an agile aerial creature which preys on worems. It has a tough hide which protects their float bladders, and a pair of wings which provide locomotion. It also has harpoon appendages that it uses to hunt, as well as a stinger at the end of their tail.

         File: 1332812227.png-(33 KB, 500x500, glund.png)
    33 KB
Another creature we have is the glund, a herbivorous offshoot of the worem. It has armor plating, and can roll into a defensive ball. It also produces offspring by giving live birth.

         File: 1332812376.png-(47 KB, 500x500, stalck.png)
    47 KB
Here we have the stalck, a sluck descendant which has adapted to a life of a land predator. Its armor protrusions have developed into full legs, and currently it hunts by ambush. Due to its coloration it's mostly nocturnal, and retreats to the humid moss patches during the day.

         File: 1332812597.png-(59 KB, 500x500, flouz.png)
    59 KB
Another amphibious-capable creature, the flouz is a rather slow creature possessing tough skin. It can survive being out of the water, but prefers the ocean. It can drag itself using two strong tentacles on the land, and it also has two phosphorescent patches to surprise prey or predator, as it is still a main staple of bladeworems.

         File: 1332812853.png-(57 KB, 500x500, pluup.png)
    57 KB
Another fus-derived creature, the pluup manages to survive in the humid moss patches, slowly devouring them. It has two strong tentacles to drag it around, and some protective tentacles housing stingers to deter predators.

These are the available creatures for evolving, but there are still some in the ocean: the vicious bladeworems, which became this world's first superpredator, the flatworems which flourished in the ocean, and the dragonsluck which shares space with the wesck.
    On to the plants!

The Evola is an aquatic plant which evolved from the moss. It has cup-shaped bladders, used to get more sunlight.

And then we have the yantar, which is the interconnected bushlike plant I mentioned the last thread. It is a descendant of the moss, and it has cuplike leaves that can gather rainwater.

There you have it, evolve away! Keep in mind that plant evolution will have an effect on the animals and vice versa.

Guess I'll continue what I do best.

The frowg's cartilaginous skeleton gives way to a ridged spine of cartilage discs, giving way to protection from wesck assaults upon their leather-yet supple backs. These strengthened spines reduce the frowg's pliability in favor of hardiness. Their lungs continue to slowly develop with the condensation of oxygen in the atmosphere. Their tongue becomes more ample and prehensile, able to extend beyond their mouth as an improved sensory organ in their pursuit of prey items.
    >> Indonesian Gentleman 03/26/12(Mon)22:12 No.18470379
and oh, feel free to evolve more than one creature! You don't have to 'stick' to a creature, you know.

frowg now preys on the aerial wesck, but its young and larvae are still vulnerable to predation.

Due to the differing climates on land, the Yantar was forced to grow larger, longer, and stronger root systems, allowing it to reach water that was deeper while preventing the various winds and such that it did not face while rooted to a rock. This has allowed it to grow in places such as tree's, or various terrains while still retaining its original strengths.

More spores are released from the strange purple flowers. As the plants begin to grow into the marshlands, they start to absorb some of the toxins present within the soil around them in the nearby bogs. The flowers take on a more hostile color pattern, and small mineral deposits form along the leaves to reinforce their large bowled leaf shape. The central leaf begins to take on a darker color, becoming a more dominant frond. The toxins begin to circulate through the plant and eventually poison the spores. The PodYantar now releases the toxins out of the soil and into the atmosphere around them as a defensive measure against animals trying to feed on them. The spores get into the creatures respiratory systems and cause them to shut down. The dead begin to decompose and rot into the soil, enriching it for the plant. The roots get thicker to gain some ground in the moist soil as well as to take on the added nutrients from the dead.

Due to increased exposer to toxins Stalcks intestinal organs have expanded, and become much denser. This tract is powerful enough to metabolize the enzymes poisonEvola dwelling Frowgs. When a Frowg is digested a new toxin is stored in the back abdomen. Prey pinned down by their pincers are injected with the paralyzing neurotoxin.

This has lead to a new behavior in the Stalcks, who seem to be raiding frowg colonies periodicity, but never completely eliminating them

The light radioactivity field around them isn't a 'kill outright' kind of deal, more like 'long term exposure might cause sterility' kind of radioactivity, dumbed down a bit. The frowg always had latent bio-electric capabilities. Its growing brain and predatory conflicts only brought back those recessive genetics into play. The frowg gains the ability to preform a method of "electrokinesis" in which it can emit powerful charges of electricity that contain a small magnitude of physical force behind them. Clever members of the species may lure stalcks only to knock them back down with a discharge of disorienting electricity. This once more raises their metabolism, promoting groups of frowgs to take advantage of their predators as potential prey items and tactfully await dropping stalcks to beat into submission. This does not come without casualties, allowing hardier survivors of these battles as perfect suitors to continue the frowg species.

Minerals gathered from the soil, water, and digested wescks, have been gathering on the tip of the resin stalk. As it turns out the minerals are highly conductive. With increasing cultivation of toxins withing the plant, Pod Yantar develops a higher concentration of irritant able to disrupt the sensors of nearby animals. It's still in low dosages just an irritant to drive off, but with the additions of the low levels of radioactivity drawn from the soil it's also beginning to cause mild cases of sterility. These cases are rare but present.

The root system has become more advanced in light of the recent Glunds burrowing ability, though little else is changed in ways of stopping it. Thicker roots, as well as specialized toxin collecting roots grow in place in hopes to deter the developing jaws of the glund worm. The central frond is becoming more dominant, and calcium from the soil seeping into the plant has strengthened the leaves structure and rigidity. Small spikes have formed in the bowl of the central stock, as well as deeper coloration.

The plants now glow faintly in the dark due to the low readings of radiation in the surrounding areas.

the ground glund after eating the lightly irradiated yantar have evolved a way to harness the plants radiation. By burrowing near the Yantar they absorb radiation with special cells. These cells, primarily in the stomach. This allows them to survive completely on soil. The radiation in their stomach cells break down the minerals with radiation and powerful stomach acids. It also has the side effect of giving them bio-luminescence, allowing them better sight underground.

However because of this young ground glund must be kept near Yantar plants until they absorb enough radiation to survive. Because of this small chambers are dug below yantar plants where female Glund give birth to their young. This proximity is slowly causeing a tolerance in the ground glund population to Yantar poisons

The frowgs at first did not skim too far from their arks, adapting to feeding on the radiative berries, spreading the sporelings across the waves, and wesck offshoots that would follow these floating paradise out to sea. Soon they'd develop strong fin membranes and dive into the deep, feeding on the buffet of fus larvae and sea-worems.

With agitation of the roots due to Glund's burrowing and nesting, the Yantar's root system becomes more diverse and hostile to combat this disruption. The roots grow deep to continue collection of minerals, bog poisons and radioactive materials, forming a thick toxic substance coursing through the plant. This causes it to glow brighter, and the roots themselves to become more toxic. When damaged, the thick sap seeps from the wound to form a seal.
Giving way to the change, however, the plants soon begin to adapt and accept the newly formed chambers as the worms now provide a finer broken down soil. However, in light of their surviving off of the minerals and other resources in the soil the Yantar starts to grow sickly to it's limited food supply. Hopefully, digging deeper solves this problem.

Other minor changes include their proboscis curving downward to aid in a pincer like motion when they attack, and light barring on their wings to aid in heavily wind conditions.

increased communal contact has caused glunds to be a bit smarter.

Meanwhile, the minor ice age has caused some icebergs to float to the tropics, unleashing new nutrients when they dissolve. Algae begin growing further to the poles. Sometimes, the icebergs would crash onto clumps of floating Evolas and carried them far and wide.

The prey must not get away.

Due to the increasingly cold climate, nocturnal hunting is not longer viable. Even the healthiest of Wecsky become lethargic and slow during the chilly nights at high altitude.

They now are forced to hunt during the day, their coloration fading to a pale blue over time.

Their wings increase in size, more blood vessels now exposed to the sun's warming rays, giving them more vitality during the hunt.

To ensure the fleeing gas bag can not escape, hooks have been developed on the front legs and rear stinger. If nothing else, sheer mass will weigh the Flouz down, and a dozen ripping claws will work their way through the leathery sack.

With the increased wing size comes increased range, requiring less energy to fly for long periods, but more energy for short hunting bursts.

They give the Frrilla isles a wide berth, the toxin build up amongst the natives too much for them to handle. Entire swarms will nest amongst them if their travels take them out to sea in search of prey, using mass numbers to scare off anything that would decide to eat them. If nothing else, a handful of the swarm dies, and another predator meets it's end as dozens of enraged Wecsky descend upon it with rending claws and stabbing mouthparts.

Truly dangerous predators will be singled out by the swarm, lifted high into the air by a ball of angry Wecsky, and be dropped either on land or the sea.

Do note, falling onto water from terminal velocity is like hitting a chunk of concrete.

The collective minds of the Mevola hubs panicked when the snow began to fall, and its beloved marsh began to freeze. When the roots between the various hub minds began to wither and die, the hubminds felt alone... so they did the only thing there was to do, all of there electrical energy was focused on pulling the mind up, up above the frozen marsh. Cradled by their own tendrils and alone, the hive minds were now individual, and bitter and vengeful. The Mevola stalks that support them are old, and truly massive. Extra lightning stalks were sprouted to capture every last bit of heat. To many they seem dormant, but they can move with lightning speed, to impale and devour all who near them

    Mind if I join in?

Due to the increased predation, and the change in climate, a splinter group of Flouz have been forced to adapt.
The sacks that contain the lighter than air gases have been reinforced with tougher skin plates.
This increase of mass however reduced their ability to float in the air, forcing them back to the ground. In response, their main tentacles grew more powerful, allowing this new breed of ground bound Flouz to move swiftly by hopping around, as their bodies are still relatively light due to the gases they contain.

Calcium based reinforced stocks with fronds that are thick, with hairy bits as well. Spores are still being released into the air, effectively cultivating the land around it and keeping it fresh with its own self contained atmosphere so to speak.

So long as wind doesn't pick up too much, the Marsh is basically their own little world. A self contained ecosystem.

Think like an ant colony, leaf cutters cut up leaves and cultivate fungus in food chambers. Roots could be cut for food (the sap) or used to reinforce the nest walls.

    BEHOLD!!!!
    THE GLORIOUS GLUND QUEEN!!!
after generations of exposure to the yontar's sterilizing toxin many females became infirtile. The ones that didnt flurished and become larger and larger and gave birth to larger spawnings. In time these spawnings became almost constant and thus the glund queen was first observed. The glund queen sits in birthing chambers. Here she is feeds on male glund. She punctures their bodys with he tendrils and feeds on them for up to three days, until they eventually perish. However during these three days she can give birth to up to 10 new glund. The birthrate of male glund to female glund has become almost 100:1. Females born are always glund queens and begin to feed upon the older queen. In the event a glund nest become to large the younger queen will sometimes take half of the colony and dig until they reach an unused yontar plant where they set up a new colony.

(next post will be of updated yontar)

The yontar and glund continue to evolve in unison. The yontay begins to grow spongy moss like tissue on the tips of its roots where bio-luminescent glund light is visible. This spongy material is harvested by glund and placed into farming chambers where mushroom and other fungus develop. This fungus is then used to feed the glund as well as provide nutrients for the yontar when the fungus dies and becomes fertilizer.

The yontar plant has also evolved honey comb like calcium over its leaves. This honey comb allows air through the many holes, and also keeps it strong against predators. Though it loses some energy generation, it is supplemented by subterranean gloom light photo synthesis.

Even with their primary prey now mostly earthbound, the Wecsky continue their control of the day lit airspace.

They only land during the night, and assume a ball nest, the interior slowly buzzing to generate heat during the night to ensure the survival of the swarm.

To further improve their protection during these night time hours, a mutation, which only happens amongst the strongest (Or perhaps those who have been exposed to the floating Frrila isles for too long) causes them to lose their wings, and grow heavy shells. While alone they are no match for a single stalck, the pheromones released by a fallen guardian throws the slumbering ball into a frenzy. Following the scent of their fallen's fluids on the attacker, they rend the foe without mercy.

Combined with the armored guardians and soarers, they can attempt to hunt down the bounding Flouz, with mixed success. Guardians always die, rushing in head long without regard for safety or survival, intent only on getting a good latch onto the Flouz and snarling them while their soaring kin move in with a hundred stinging swips before flying off, to avoid harm.

They are the honored elders, too old to join the hunt, but still ready to give their lives dearly for the swarm. If they are not a part of a hunt, they spend what remains of their short time sunning on rocks, waiting for the buzz of their children over head to tell them it is either time to sleep, or time to kill.

With possibly of other species attacking their homes and yontar food sources the glund have evolved a soldier class. These glund have elongated tendrils with mandibles on the end. These mandables are extremely sharp from cutting through soil and are hollowed allow those bitten to be injected with radioactive toxins or sucked dry of bodily fluids. The soldier glunds make pits and hide at the bottom of them, when an unsespecting prey enters the pit the glund bites with its many tendrils and drags the prey partial under ground so it wont escape. It is possible for many soldier glund to lay in wait in a single hole for larger prey.

I imagine they are fairly small, given their highly mobile nature?

Perhaps they have a slight size advantage, but they can not make up for the Stalkc's nature inclination of being a ground hunter.

A pair of mean claws and a barbed tail is no match for the mantis snail. They are just sort of to go "Hey! Hey! Get off mah lawn punk! Don't make me call mah grandkids!" since the Wecsky's strength is purely in numbers and mobility.

The Frillas have made their decision. They cannot nurture two species, especially one that refuses to stay so close to it. The Frowgs begin to adapt once more. As a conservation method in long waiting periods for food, the frowgs master the art of hibernation, huddled together in big lumpy purple clusters within chambers methodically sealed with mats of vegetation, only to be perked awake in an instant the moment a school of prey stirs the Frilla's network of roots. The lack of competition for space with the stalcks allows them to grow slightly larger. For now their existence would seem almost utopian. For now...

some worker glund have evolved a suction like mouth piece. This allows them to consume slime and is resulting in large amounts of toxins to build up in their bodies. When they become bloated they are fed to the soilders and queen to increase their volatility and often accompany worker glund to the surface. When on the surface the bloat glund move slower then their fellows. As a result when predators attack the bloated glunds move slower and are eaten/killed rather than valuable workers, and also deliver fatal doses of toxins to those attempting to eat them.

The Wesck under going a somewhat drastic change due the colder climates during the night. The Night Wescks branching off from it's diurnal brother have become more lethargic even during it's prime hunting in the night.

It has compensated for this by developing a secretion from it's stringer which acts as a sticky sap. Several of them layer this sap in area's that seems to get high traffic from other creatures, and devours them when they awakens at night (Think swarm spiders). It has begun attempting to feed on other creatures (with varying degrees of success?)

the recent floods have cause many problems in glund colonies. However some bloat glunds have evolved to suck up water rather than toxins, these Gel-Glunds feed on water and combine it with other nutrients in the slime to created a sugar water. These Gel-Glund gorge themselves on water and slime until they grow so bloated that they are rolled to the fungus farm or queens chamber and allowed to burst, feeding nearby glund larvae or fungus.

(also can the glund elect to get smaller and increase in number per colony?)
(right now i figure the average colony contains 1 queen, 19 soldiers, 15 toxic bloats, 15 gel glunds, and 50 workers) equal to about a 100 per colony

As a result this new breed of glund- Glund weavers spin low lying webs to catch winged predators seeking to ingest them. The webs have warning lines to soldier pits that when triggered cause all soldiers in the pits to move to the ensnared victim and begin draining it of tasty body fluids and inject it with toxins to kill it.

(I assume Flouz lack eyes, as at no point did I spot them developing those, in this thread nor in the earlier).

Unlike many of the other creatures, the hoppers respond to the increased predation with speed, instead of poisons. The main tentacles of the hoppers are becoming more and more leg-like, as their increased muscle mas forces their pseudo bones harden so they can support the creature.

In addition to this, their legs are now covered with the same kind of barbed hairs as the tips of their "toes" are. They serve both as extremely sensitive feelers, and defense against predators who might try to grab them, barbed hairs make grabbing them extremely painful.

The growing amounts of poisons in the environment have forced the Hoppers to develop an additional stomach to properly neutralize the toxins.

Their new and more active lifestyle has also resulted in the development of primitive eyesight, though it is mostly based in infrared.
They have also developed pheromone glands for communication with each other.

The new breed of Hoppers are opportunistic scavengers and omnivores. They feed o anything they find. They have bigger mouth parts and more developed secondary to help cracking open though shells and capturing smaller prey.

The Hoppers still reproduce by spawning hundreds of floating larva, and although they have started to develop primitive sociality, they are still mostly loners, who do not take care of their young, and instead rely on numbers for survival.

Right now they benefit from the fact that they seem to be inedible to most of the species of the planet, while they themselves live off a combination of photosynthesis an internal breakdown of water that is then consumed as oxygen and hydrogen...which is then also broken down into carbon dioxide and more water..which is then photosynthesized again. With their increased capacity to digest toxins, some flouz have discovered the ample food sources that glund colonies provide, and have evolved multiple sticky, tounge-like tendrils that extend from the mouth for several feet, allowing the flouz to devour entire glund colonies. This leads to groups of flouz tending to gather near Yontar to feed, knowing that (due to the symbiotic nature of the yontar and glund) a glund colony must surely be nearby.

As there are only so many glund nests, these new glund-eating Flouz have begun sharing meals, and traveling with, other Flouz. This herd mentality serves the dual purpose of locating more glund nests (thus increasing total food for the entire pack) and allows most of the herd to escape when predators attack, leaving only the weakest and slowest to be devoured.

Also in response to the tongues incading the Glund nests, glund weavers have evovled to have serated mandibles. They now hide buried up to their mouths in tunnels and as a tongue passes my they clamp their cutting jaws shut. However this doesnt protect the glund that are near the surface or on the surface from these ravenous predators, but keeps the queen and food chambers safe so that the colony isnt entirely wiped out.

in response to the glunds new protective measures, the Tongued Flouz develop hard and barbed cartilage layer over the tips of their tongues, making them more resistant to damage. This however makes them lose their stickiness. Because of this, the Tongued Flouz now hunts by harpooning it's prey with it's tongues. The added weight of the cartilage and the muscle tissue needed for their newfound function has forced the tongues to become somewhat shorter however.

The poisonous excretions of both the yantar plants and the Glunds have also taken their toll on the tongued flouz species. To quickly remove the toxins from their systems, they have greatly increased metabolism, which in turn has reduced their size and made their lives shorter.

Although the majority of the most deadly poisons are either quickly neutralized or expelled, large amounts of toxic residue slowly accumulates inside the body of the Flouz, which also makes their lives much shorter.

The old harpooned flouzes are sickly and shriveled creatures, as the toxins have slowly eaten them alive. Because of this, the harpooned flouz lives it's live swiftly. It reproduces when it's is young, as it's toxic diet won't allow it to live very long.

Common method in nature for dealing with toxins ladies and gents, is a more efficient liver. that and the storage of toxins in fatty tissues, in theory a creature that consumes a lot of toxic compounds would be very efficient at neutralizing them and excreting them in some manner.

Most of the offspring would probably die, but the ones who survive will have an easier time with it. If this goes on they will eventually become more or less immune to it.

This is why agricorps need to keep switching the pesticides they use every year or so - the bugs have such a short breeding cycle that they become immune to specific poisons extremely quickly.

While the Chambered Flouz quickly started out-competing it's ancestors in their own niche, some of them managed to adapt to this newcomer.

Because the Chambered Flouz was better in what normal Flouzes did in almost every respect, the Flouzes were forced to adapt. They took smaller forms, developed rudimentary wings from their rear tentacles and further refined their already existing propulsion system.

These changes made them much more agile than their lumbering cousins, allowing them to move to another ecological niche, instead of competing for the same one with the Chambered Flouz.

As the glunds bored ever deeper to the ground, the Flouz population started slowly, but surely dwindle. The massive harpoon flouz herds began to disperse, as the food sources ran dry. Those who survived, were forced to adopt another way to live.

The Nomadic Flouz are smaller than their ancestors, they live in smaller although socially far more complex societies that are constantly on the move. They are opportunistic scavengers once again.

Because of their more complex social structure, their pheromone glands have developed, along with their nervous system, that is starting to form numerous primitive brain like structures in the key parts of their body.

Their legs have also adapted to the more mobile lifestyle, as they have become stronger and sturdier.
The greatest development in their biology is their reproductive strategy however.
Instead of releasing hundreds of small and defenseless larvae, the Flouzes instead carry the larvae inside themselves, allowing them to develop further, and thus giving them a competing advance against predators.

Another species of Flouz developed from the original hopping flouz.
The Running Flouz is a predatory creature, that is specialized in hunting other smaller creatures and ground bound flouz species, such as the now extinct harpooned flouz and their descendants the nomadic flouz.

The barbed hairs in their toes developed into sharp claw-like hooks that give them a firm grip on the ground as they run.
Their forward facing tentacles also developed these kinds of barbs, allowing them to grab their prey more efficiently.
Their back tentacles gained mas and became more rigid and tail-like, giving the creature much needed balance for it's running.

The Running Flouz hunts in small packs, and uses distraction to pick of the weakened prey, which it charges with it's sharp mouth parts first, ready to rip open the unlucky prey.

The most massive offshoot of the original Hopping Flouz is the Great Flouz. These sizable omnivores prowl through the undergrowth, and snag anything edible to their powerful peak like mouth.

To support their increased mass, the Great Flouz developed larger gas sacks and sturdier legs. They don't jump around, instead they lazily mow down plants and animals alike that are in their way.

They have extremely thick skin, and indeed, they are able to shrug off damage that would rupture a lesser Flouz. To ward of any would be predators the Great Flouz has developed two muscular whip like tentacles, that it can use to constrain it's assailants.

Like their ancestors, they reproduce by spawning hundreds of larvae to the air, and hoping that at least few of them survive.

I had to pass out last night but Im happy to see the thread alive!

The Mevola have made a few minor changes.
The large base tendrils now have smaller offshoots, for more fine manipulation, thees are connected to the center of the tendril, which in turn is connected to the ''capacitor gue'' surrounding the brain. After their vast root system froze the Mevola had to acquire nutrients by other means, as fueling Its massive brain is no mean feat. One of Its gargantuan bulbs has specialized for this exact purpose. Sporting large metallic teeth however tends to scare away likely prey however, so the mouth generally is closed to look much like the other bulb, which has developed crude photo receptors and extra "lightning rod'' stalks. To attract prey non mature spores are released, whose job, when breathed or ingested in sufficient quantity hijack the hosts nervous system, steering it towards the mother plant. Not all animals are devoured however, some are made to ingest mature spores. The spores live in the digestive track and feed off of whatever the host eats. Weeks later a bulb with teeth developed and eats its way out, ''rooting'' on top of the host, and the rest of its body to speed up growth.

Been lurking a while, thought I'd contribute something.

    Meanwhile in the ocean:

Thanks to their smaller size, the new breed of smaller Bladeworems are easy prey for their larger cousins. As a defense they lose their gliding wings, and adopt a more earthy colouration to better blend in with the ocean floor. Some have been observed making burrows by dissolving soil on the seafloor with their acid but as of yet this behaviour is still rare.

Now that they feed on the boundary between sea and sky the filterworems are vulnerable to attack from above and below. A mutation of eyespots along the underbelly as well as the back helps clots of filterworems scatter to avoid the questing swarms of bladeworems.
