The blaze of green, arcane lightning flashes toward you, before you can react-
And Fellwind leaps into the way, bringing his crystalline blade to bear, parrying the spell. It sparks off of the indestructible blade's edge, and you feel the pulse of energy as the spell unravels itself.
"Lady, we're under attack by spellcasters!" He cried. Lewin drew his bow back, the flaming arrow knocked. "They're out of range." He said.

You spread your hands, and magic power wracks through your body, making your spine arch back, and a shining sphere appeared around the boat. Another blast of green lightning shot out, but when it hit the sphere's edge, a hexagon materialized in front of it, and shot the lightning back at the caster. The caster dove out of the way, and then increased speed toward you.

Grubwort stood. "Fellows." He said, solemnly, no humor on his face. "Draw your weapons. Remember yourselves."
The ship's crew nodded, and drew small, metal crossbows.

A few more blasts of lightning richochet off of the shimmering barrier, and the spell's upkeep is making you wheeze. You look toward the attackers again, and you can see them much more clearly, now that they're closer. With faces graced with savage, serrated beaks, and a large bony crest on the top of their heads, they were definitely not any species you'd seen or heard of before. Their arms were small, birdlike talons, and great wings were coming out of their shoulders.
"What have you done with the Other." One of them hissed in a warbling voice. The other one chanted, and this time, they slammed their palm into the edge of your barrier. . With a gasp of pain, you feel the barrier shatter.

You reach both hands forward, your magic grasping each of them, and then you pull them into one another, where they smashed together, as they each make a warbling noise and fill the air around them with loose feathers. Then you bring your hands down, as if smashing something into the ground, and then the two avian creatures splash into the water. The orc crew and the two rangers lean over the edge of the boat, and start firing bolts and arrows, peppering the water with sharp implements.

One of the orcs twitch. . . and then drop their crossbow. You look him in the eyes, and see. . he isn't there. His pupils are large, and his eyes bloodshot. He snarls loudly, and tenses back. . But then Grubwort hits him in the back of the neck, and the orc is out cold.

You take a deep breath, and release the magic, sitting down so you can rest.
"Too much stimulation for him." Grubwort is telling Lewin as the two of them carry the knocked-out orc belowdecks.
There's a sudden presence of magic, under the water, and the boat is shoved away, the entire ship tilting. You look down at the two spellcasters, and it seems they've. . shapeshifted their own wings into fins, using them to propel through the water. One of them burst out of the water, and lands on the deck. Fellwind leaps forward, blade in hand, and the spellcaster dodges out of the way. The spellcaster reaches his talon out and grips Fellwind's face, preparing to speak words of power. . but then Grayson lumbers up,and mauls the spellcaster, smashing it into the deck as it squawks loudly. You hear bones break.

You close your eyes, and open your mind to magic, sensing as far as you can.

Something below you, below the water, seems to be channelling a large amount of energy, and you can very vaguely make out the type of spell it is; shapeshifting. A powerful, powerful shapeshifting spell.

What bursts out of the water is a large, enormous sea serpent, long needle-like teeth flashing as it snaps out of the water at you. It doesn't bite you, though, not at the least. Instead, the serpent picks you up into it's mouth.
"We must make haste, Uriel." The sea serpent whispers to you as it holds you within it's mouth. "I am blind in this form."
>>

Oh, right. We *took* Uriel's magic away from him. I guess they think we ARE Uriel.
Makes sense, since they are Shapeshifter race, how else would they recognize each other if not by their magic signature?
>>
You grin savagely, take in a deep breath, and slam a spell into the back of his head, paralyzing the sea serpent. It twitches, and then falls over the boat, both ends draping over. The serpent's mouth opens, and you find yourself spilling out across the deck, where Lewin pulls you to your feet. You turn about, and see the orcs slashing at the paralyzed serpent, cutting it open.

"Lady." Grubwort says. "Your bear has gnawed apart the second spellcaster, but it still lives. Should we keep and interrogate it?"
>>
>>19302944
"Yes, let's. They seem to think I am their comrade that had infiltrated the High Lord's court."

Or whatever his title is.
>>
"Yes, let's. They seem to think I am their comrade, Uriel, who was the Magister in High Lord Sirius's court." You say. Grubwort nods, and kneels down toward the bloodsoaked, miserable pile of feathers, and starts binding it, applying bandages made out of strange yet familiar vines.
"I've never seen this creature's like before." Lewin said. "How do you know how to treat it?"
"I don't." Grubwort responded. "Troll flesh has magical healing properties, however. I've no idea how long this thing will remain unconscious, but it's best that you rest. I'm no magician, but I know that magic exhausts one who uses it."

You hear splashes as the orc crew starts dumping parts of the butchered, shapeshifted sea serpent overboard.
>>
You end up below deck, laying on one of the long benches. You're simply laying there, staring at the ceiling, thinking about how well-crafted all of this seems to be- it appears as if Grubwort takes good care of his ship- when Fellwind comes down.
"Lady Ishelda." He says. "Can I ask. . about this sword?" He asks, looking down at it. You notice that it seems to glow faintly when in a room this dark.

"Well. . I blocked a spell with it earlier, without even thinking about it." He said. "What exactly is it?"
"I'd intended to make it faster, and sharper, and stronger." You say. "But. . the power got away from my grasp. It's extremely far beyond what I had intended it to be, and it may have properties other than what I planned."
"So you don't know either." He says. "But. . me and Grubwort have been testing it, and as far as we can tell, it can't be damaged. By anything."He had somewhat of an awed tone to his voice. "Is it an artifact? Because it seems like one of those things that become legendary over time."

"Artifacts are born by the way they are used, not by their quality." You say. "If it becomes a legendary artifact, it will be because of your actions. Shall you name it?"
"Me?" Fellwind asked. "You're the one that made it. But. . . yes, I have a name for it. It shall be called Rikar." He says, sheathing the blade. The blade's glimmer goes dark, and the two of you are left in the dimness belowdeck.

"Land ho!" You hear Grubwort call. "Lady Ishelda, come feast your eyes on the sight of Venerable Refuge!"
You and Fellwind climb up above, and after squinting through the sudden brightness of the noonday sun, you saw it.

Venerable Refuge was large, incredibly large. All of the buildings seemed to be made out of dark lumber, and very well treated. Peering over the top of the city was a tall stone tower.
"That's the historian's tower." Grubwort said, noticing where your eyes lay. "I'm certain that while you're here, the historians would love to answer any questions you have. From what I hear, they carve everything they learn onto the inner side of the walls, marking down stories thousands of years old."
>>
>>19303573
Okay, now that has to be something we've never seen before.
"Oh my, I would be honored to see such a masterpiece of carving and history. Do you know exactly how long ago it was started?"

"Oh my, I would be honored to see such a masterpiece of carving and history. Do you know exactly how long ago it was started?"
"We all do. It was twelve hundred years ago." Grubwort responded. "The lowest stones were set, placed, and carved, in the ogre's tongue. It was the first structure built here, when we first came to this land." He shrugged. "The venerable king carved it, the story is told, and he wrote 'I am no longer a beast nor a slave. This shall be our home.'"

"Excuse me." An orc said, as the boat came into port. "But. . we weren't alerted that mankind were coming with you."
"Here." Grubwort said, sighing and handing over a scroll. "Grayskin's signature is on there, and he's given leave to these three men, as well as the bear."
>>
>>19303699
Do not worry, none of us are here to cause any problems. We are actually here to take care of a minor problem that is bothering both of our people.
>>
"I see." The orc said, opening the scroll and reading it. "Lady Ishelda, is it?" He asked, looking to you. "Welcome to Venerable Refuge. As Grubwort needs to unload his goods, it is my duty to show you around for the rest of this day. I believe it would be best if you left tomorrow morning in order to assist Second Hunter with the trolls." He said. "My name is Scribe, and I am the. . customs officer, you could say, of this port."
He completely ignored Grayson, Lewin, and Fellwind as he led you and your group off of the boat.
>>
>>19303810
"It is a pleasure to meet you, Scribe. This city's rugged beauty rather reminds me of one of the towns from my home, almost. It's... Comforting. I look forward to seeing all of it."
>>
>>19303810
"Thank you sir, do you believe we would be able to see the Historian's Tower today?"
>>
"It is a pleasure to meet you, Scribe. This city's rugged beauty rather reminds me of one of the towns from my home, almost. It's comforting." You say. "I look forward to seeing all of it."
"Sadly, the venerable king and queen are not in the city right now." Scribe said, leading you through the city. "They quite enjoy meeting visitors from other lands. We have a few places of note that you might want to visit. The historian's tower, for one, and then there is Fifth Shipwright, who built the boat you rode upon on the trip here. I'm not certain if you men can eat our delicacies, but if you can, there are quite a few cooks and chefs in the area. The bowyer Treechild is in the city, however, as he left his village when the slumbering trolls awoke; you may want to meet him."
>>
>>19303941
I think we should head first to the bower, he could have some information about the number/types of trolls, then if enough time remains, we should go to the tower.
>>
Wow it's slow in here today.
>>
>>19303981

Going with this as well, should find out what we'd be facing first, then we can do the whole sightseeing thing.
>>
"May we meet this bowyer?" You ask.
"Certainly." Scribe responded, and led you through to more crowded and cramped streets, before stopping outside of a relatively large building. He knocked thrice on the doorway, and then walked in.
"What do you want now, Scribe?" Treechild asked; she sounded annoyed.
"I bring three men from the provinces." Scribe responds, and leads you into the room.
Treechild looked to the three of you.
"Men? Intriguing. . ." She shrugged. "Are you here to commission a bow?" She asked. Lewin looked tempted to say yes, but he glanced at you and went silent.
>>
>>19304097

>>
>>19304097
"Actually madam, we come in search of the awakened trolls that traverse these lands. We have been hired in order to take care of them and heard you were there when they first awoke. Any information you have could be very helpful, and afterwards I believe my friend would certainly like to commission a bow."
>>
>>19304097
Give a small smile, "I think Lewin might like to, but Scribe mentioned you came here after the trolls awoke. I was hoping you might be able to tell us about what we might encounter out there."

Also: Is Treechild a boy orc, or a girl orc?
>>
>>19304156

"I think Lewin might like to, but Scribe mentioned you came here after the trolls awoke. I was hoping you might be able to tell us about what we might encounter out there." You say, and she looks at you levelly.
"Nobody cares about the bows." She says. "They all want to talk about the trolls. Well, arrows don't work on trolls. Trolls don't have organs to pierce." She sighed, and closed her eyes, forcing herself to calm down. "Listen, man. All I knew before I left was that there were three old ones, and one. . ancient one. I can't believe there was still an ancient one that close to the village. When they start growing bark, they're all but impossible to see when they're slumbering. That's all I can tell you."
She eyes Lewin. "Give me your bow." She demanded, somewhat forcefully and he handed it over. She started examining it.

"Well, I don't know much about ancient trolls." You say. "What can you tell me?"
"They're just like old ones, but larger." She said, selecting from a large group of bow staves. "They slumber for decades instead of years, and when they wake up, they lay almost a hundred seeds instead of an old one's half dozen. Their skin eventually grows into a thorny bark that's very resistant to fire. You'll need to crack the bark before you burn it."

"The ogres are gone, and have been for hundreds of years. The lizardmen, after the ogres went extinct, created a wide and powerful empire. . at least, until men and fey worked together to destroy the lizardmen. Ever since the lizardmen empire fell, they've been . . dwindling." She said. "Male man." She said, pointing to Lewin. "Your bow shall be done soon."
"Thank you, madam Treechild." You say, and curtsy. "Scribe, could bring us to the historian's tower?" you ask.
"Certainly." He said, and brought you out into the cramped streets once again. "You know, when I was a child, I wanted to be a historian." He mentioned. "That's why I chose my name as I did."

The tower looks a lot larger up close than it did from afar. You note, however, that people here don't pass for grayson like they did back in Sirius City. Perhaps because they're less freaked out? Or maybe that hat has started to work. .

"Greetings, Scratcher!" Scribe said, waving down an old orc who was wearing a robe.
"Scribe. And three men. No doubt to help with the troll problem I've been hearing?" He asked, looking to the three of you.

He opened the doors, and the four of you stepped in.

The tower was awesome. The inside of the tower was covered in writing, in tongues you don't know, and a massive spiral staircase twisted around, giving one access to the top.
"The higher one is, the later in history they are." Scratcher intoned. "I doubt you can read these lowest runes, as those were in ogrish, a long dead language. But I can read, and I know this tower as well as any other orc. What questions do you have of our history, daughter of man?"

"Oh my, in such a marvel there are so many. How did your people meet, and begin work with, the other races of this world? Also, were there are magical artifacts known throughout your people's history, I've recently learned of such object of power and would like to know more about them."
>>
So ask him about their origins as the most we've heard was that they were slaves under the Ogres and that the King and Queen were the first ones free of them.
>>
"Can you tell me about your origins?" You ask. "The origins of your people?"
"Certainly. For. . who knows how long, we orcs were the weapons of the ogres. They fostered the most furious of us, and the strongest. . but that came at the cost of our minds. The king and queen were two orcs who were, for the most part, normal. Until during a single battle, where their magic power awoke."
"Now, our kind don't usually have magic power- our spellcasters are the rarest of all other beings. But magic does something to an orc that it does to no other creature; it makes us live ageless lives. The king and queen lived as beasts, but that age gave them the time to finally tame themselves. So when that happened, the waited, and plotted. When it came time. . they kidnapped all of the orc children from their beds, loaded them up on a boat with whoever else they could tame, and. . left. To here. Venerable Refuge got its name because it is, quite literally, our refuge from the ogres. This tower was where all of orc-kind once lived, when the tower was merely a story or two tall. You four stand inside my kind's birthplace, as we speak. For the next hundred years, the venerable king and queen would leave to ogre land, pretend to be the docile, mindless slaves they once were, and kidnap more children, bringing them here."
>>
>>19305477
I noticed that Greyskin was able to tell if something was untrue. Are skills like that common among theorcs? Is it similar to magic?
>>
"Of course, the ogres found us eventually. Wharghaul the Warlord followed the king and queen to the Refuge, having found out what was happening to his slaves. After a battle where he lost his eye, he left, and went to.. we're not sure where. Nobody knows where the blind ogre warlord went, but when he came back. . he came back bearing seeds. He lied smoothly, telling the Venerable Queen that he wanted to apologize for his kind, and that he urged the orcs to live and be free. The warlord was cunning, and gave the queen a gift. Seeds, he said, for food, so that the queen and her people would be prosperous."
He sighed. "The next few weeks, the queen tended to these seeds, giving them life magic, and waiting patiently. What followed were the births of the first trolls. Many, many of us died that day."

"Sir Scratcher?" You ask. "I noticed that Greyskin was able to tell if something was untrue, or if someone was acting odd. Are skills like that common among the orcs? Is it similar to magic?"
"All races can have talents like that, but yes, they're more common for orcs. I believe it to be some kind of. . cosmic repayment, for having so few magicians. My talent, for example, is the ability to remember everything I see for all time, without forgetting or letting my memories cloud."

I claim the playing of deus ex; this; and a text conversation for my failure....
>>
Welp, hope this means it's gonna be an enchantment on the tower that does it for everyone.

Also, at the end, ask if there are any artifacts in the history, that stuff could be really cool.
>>
"Excuse me, but. . where does the story begin?" You ask.
"What do you mean?"
"Where is the very first stone?"
He stops, and looks at you closely. "Down here." He said, walking down to the bottom, and brushing his hand over a single brick. You look down, and gently touch it-

You see two adults, one male, one female, holding a group of cowering children, hiding from the cold in a crude stone structure.
You see the same two adults, proudly riding a ramshackle boat, each carrying a blade and a staff, respectively.
You see the ogre warlord, furious. He was dense and tall, with a single cyclopean head and two horns jutting out of the top of his head. Bright red ogrish runes could be seen tattooed into his skin, he bellowed as he charged into battle.
You see the staved woman speaking with the ogre, calm, evenly measured lies spewing from the ogre's lips.
You see trolls bursting from the fields, attacking the orcs wildly, before being chased off into the forest.
You see the male orc hiding in the underbrush of some jungle, watching ogres fighting heavily armored, scaled beings with raptor-like snouts. Lizardmen, no doubt.
You see the sky grow red, as a mushroom shaped cloud burst in the distance, as you look over the sea.
You see a human high lord and an elven woman speaking to the male, asking him for help against the lizardmen. The male declines; his people still need time to grow.
You see a birdlike being- just like the spellcasters from yesterday afternoon, whispering something to the female. "The coven", you hear, but everything else is too quiet to understand.

You gasp as Scratcher pulls your hand from the stone.
"Are you harmed, Lady?" Lewin asked from behind you.

I am completely unharmed, I was just appreciating the history of this place.
>>
>>19305898
"No, I'm fine, but I think I just tapped into some sort of leyline within the tower. I saw snippets of the past, as if I were there."
>>
"I'm fine." You say. "I just. . tapped into the history of this place."
"You were ranting in tongues." Scratcher said. "Specifically, I caught snippets of ogrish and orcish."
You glance at the runes, and see that you can read them now. Strange. . did you just learn the languages?
"Lady Ishelda." Scratcher asked. "After what just happened. . I think I am going to have to approach the top of the tower today."
>>
>>19305994
"Oh, I would never think of myself as being worthy enough of a story in this tower."
That is what he's taking about, right?
>>
>>19305994
"is that a bad thing? I'm sorry..."
>>
"I would never think of myself as being worthy enough of a story in this tower." You say.
"Don't worry yourself." He says, walking up the ramp. "The historians choose what is worthy and what is not. All I will write is this; 'A man called Lady Ishelda came to the tower, and touched the first stone with her magic.' It is a story worth carving."

well alright then

I might want to come here later and see other stones, would that be acceptable?

visit the bowyer and see if there is a new bow, then the shipright

"You seem a stranger to this land." Scratcher said. "Near the top, we keep a map. A map that you may glance at, and see our world in it's entirety. You may find it somewhat useful."
"Lady Ishelda." Scribe said. "If you climb the tower with Scratcher, we will not have time to visit any other place. It is quite a long walk, after all." He said. "But the choice, as always, lays with you."

It is a great honor to be placed within your towers.

"It's the history of an entire civilization, inscribed upon an architectural masterpiece! I can't pass this up just to sightsee through the rest of the city. That can come later. Besides the trolls, this is the highest priority."

"This is the history of an entire civilization, inscribed upon an architectural masterpiece. I can't pass this up just to sightsee through the rest of the city, that can come later. Beside the trolls, this is the highest priority." You tell him.
"Very well. I will stay here, though." Scribe said, as you climbed the tower.
You walk up the massive spiral ramp, noting dozens of orcs who stand on the ledge, inspecting the stones and runes with notebooks in hand. As you get higher and higher, you see that they're. . still building the tower. Masons are strung up at the top of the tower, adding yet more stone to the tower, building it higher and higher.

"Here." Scratcher said, and stepped off of the ramp. He pointed you to the map, and then he took a small chisel out of his pocket. He walked up near a brick, and started chipping.

"What's this black smudge in the center?" You ask.
"The warped lands." Lewin responded. "Or it's sometimes called the blasted lands, or the wasteland. No life grows there, and what little water there is is poison. Ever so often, you can find a pile of destroyed rubble that was once an ogrish building, but. . you don't want to travel past it on the ground."

The last thing we need is to start destabilizing the worlds economies with magic.

run our hands over the stone...see if we can feel anything

"is there anywhere I can get a rubbing of this? or a number of rubbings for that matter. I find it useful to know where you are..."

"Why wouldn't you want to travel into the Ogrish ruins on foot? Are they not empty? The lands are barren and unforgiving, but it sounds like an archaeological treasure trove."

"Why wouldn't you want to travel into the Ogrish ruins on foot? Are they not empty? The lands are barren and unforgiving, but it sounds like an archaeological treasure trove." You say.
He shook his head. "I. . I thought about it, but the poison... It's in the air, and in the dirt, and they say even the treasure one can find there is poisoned. One ends up getting ill, vomiting, and when it gets bad, they start. . bleeding, even without cuts. Even years and years after one enters the warped lands, the sickness remains, keeping them weak."
You run your hands over the map. "Is there anywhere I can get a copy of this?"
Scratcher hands you a small notebook. "Feel free to make your own, Lady Ishelda." He says, and you do so.
>>

"Can magic cure the disease of the warped lands? Or can it be blocked against in the first place, so a cure is not necessary?"
>>
"Can magic cure the disease of the warped lands? Or can it be blocked against in the first place, so a cure is not necessary?"
"I don't believe so, lady." He said. "Not easily, anyway. The elves say it's. . some kind of astral fire, left over from the lizardmen's epic spell. The astral fire is the exact opposite of life magic, so they say, and causes the body to break down. With enough life magic, one could keep from getting sick, but. . you can't even feel when it burns you. There's no way to be safe enough."
By the time you've scribbled down the map as well as you could, Scratcher is done with the chisel.
"Lady Ishelda, it's nearly sunset." Fellwind said. "We should set for the inn that Grayskin got for us, so we can awaken refreshed tomorrow."
"It was a pleasure to meet you." Scratcher said, and bowed deeply. You set down the ramp, and by the time you get down there, the sun has already set.

"Ah, here you are." Scribe says. "Grayskin prepared a place for you and your retainers to sleep. Shall I lead you there?"
You nod, and he does so, leading you through the much more empty streets. The wind howls, and you shiver- it's much colder at night, here, than you thought it would be.

You find yourself lying in bed, and you can hardly sleep...
"Uriel." You hear a being whisper from outside. "What are you doing in that form? Why have you stopped responding to the Coven's call?"
You look out the window, and see the heavily bandaged and broken avian spellcaster from earlier.

It was a nuke, wasn't it?
>>
>>19307184
It sure sounds like it. Or a magical equivalent.
>>
>>19307236
>>19307184
>Yes, it was a magically-created nuclear explosion. Only much, much larger.
>>
>>19306694
Since we absorbed Uriel, does that mean WE can shapeshift?
>>
>>19308224
We may have to try.
>>
So... what do you propose we do?
We can't bluff and pretend to be Uriel since we got little to no information. Should we try to rip the birdlike's memories and learn who they are, what the coven is, their plans, etc?
That way we kill the bird and have useful info.
>>
>>19308224
>You could always shapeshift
>The avian beings' shapeshift ability isn't something related to their race. It's a spell that they learned and memorized- theoretically, anyone could learn and memorize the same spell.
>>
>>19308757
Did we get more powerful after we took Uriels magic? Could we continue doing that with other spellcasters?
Taking away their magic and becoming stronger ourself seems like a good enough goal.
>>
>>19308804
Magical diablerie never comes without consequences. We might start getting voices of the other spell casters in our head.
>>
>>19308804
This is not a course of action I can support intentionally taking.
>>
>>19308826
I guess it's possible.
But we did take away only magic from Uriel, as of yet we haven't noticed anything different about us.
>>
>>19308804
>You got more powerful, yes, but only temporarily.
>Similarly, Uriel will regain the ability to cast spells over time.
>>
>>19308921
Wait, so we didn't permanently take it away from him?
So why do these birdmen think we are Uriel then?
>>
>>19308976
>Because you still have enough of Uriel's magical 'wavelength' left over for them to 'recognize' you, and they can't 'recognize' Uriel, because he seems like just a normal human to them.
>>
>>19308921
>You got more powerful, yes, but only temporarily.
>Similarly, Uriel will regain the ability to cast spells over time.
Pity. I hope they have prepared for that back where we left to the Orclands.
