>11The Mountains of the Moon!Liege: Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie,Hand of the King, Warden of the East, RECENTLY DEAD MANThe Mountains of the Moon spread through the eastern corner of Westeros, scratching the sky with their high peaks. Infested with savage clans of mountain men, it is a wild place, scarcely under the control of its lord. One region shines brightest, however, and that’s the Vale of Arryn. Wrested from the old Mountain Kings of the First Men, the Vale of Arryn is now the seat of power for one of the purest Andal lines in Westeros and features the lands and holdings of House Arryn and those banners sworn to him. Houses sworn to House Arryn enjoy the benefits of the mountains, but there is little available land for new lords. Furthermore, the mountain clans cause endless trouble for the people living here. The turtle-lovers aren't the only ones with a natural defense: we get +20 ourselves. Along with +10 influence. Unfortunately, we get -5 lands and population, and -10 law. We'll see how that all turns out when the stat rolls line up.

+3 defense, +3 powerHouse Bussard was formed from a now-vanished house's remnants during the Blackfyre rebellion. Its survivors took residence in the Vale, and bolstered their numbers by allying with a band of the savage men living there. They acquired their current home, a castle of solid stature, when they were invited inside by the Benards, a house sworn to the Vale. Lord Bussard and his men struck before they had tasted bread or salt, and struck off the outstretched hand of aid. The castle and its women now theirs, they managed to stave off a siege by the rest of the Vale by immediately swearing fealty--and their fortified position at a time when the Vale had other problems was of no small consideration. As part of the terms, all lands surrounding the castle were stripped from them. They live on what little they have, and are often paid to keep the savage hillfolk occupied--and away from the Vale's trade routes.
>>19496085I like this backstory.
>>19496085Yessssssss.
>>19496085Again. We cannot live in the castle if we do not have any points in land. No points in land = owning no land. Our story would go so far as taking residence in the Vale or during our stay with the Benards, before killing them.
It's too bad we don't have just a bit more power, else I'd recommend an elite house guard unit called the Carrion Guard.
That backstory covers all the events, even. Nice.
House army name could be The Corpse Eaters, because we're filthy scavengers who stole a castle.
Stats can't go under 0. If we added 3, we'd have 3. Enough for one type of land.
From the description of 31-40 defense: "Alternatively, natural terrain features, such as mountains or swamps, provide additional fortification."It wouldn't work with the backstory, but 0 land doesn't prevent us from living in a well-fortified cave.
>>19496151Yeah. If we substitute +3 Defense for Land, we can keep the awesome backstory. The cost would be we'd have to settle for a smaller castle.
>>19496177We could also have a smaller army instead.
>>19496151So if we put our pluses in Defense and Land, we could have a castle?
>>19496181A larger castle. We can have a castle without putting the +3 in defense. But for a larger castle we pay the cost of worst armed men. They'd be useful in an area as lawless as ours.
>>19496181A small castle is fine too guys.
>>19496209And the guys we screwed over weren't exactly super big shots themselves, so it makes fair sense that they only had a Small Castle.

We have a small castle, and the other 9 points go to waste, sadly.I don't see any reason not to have an heir and either a second son or a firstborne daughter (to marry off). What we really should decide are how to compose House Bussard's lands, wealth, and power.

How are we going to spend our (limited) wealth? An Artisan to make castle-forged weapons? A Maester? Maybe a mine?
We also need to do the most important bit--TROOPS!
A few things to keep in mind when coming up with terms for this house, courtesy of Wikipedia:"A group of vultures is called a wake, committee, venue, kettle, or volt. The term kettle refers to vultures in flight, while committee, volt, and venue refer to vultures resting in trees. Wake is reserved for a group of vultures who are feeding."
>>19496547Don't suppose it's way too late to change our House's motto to "A Wake For The Dead", eh?
>>19496542Oh, yeah. We need to get a troop list. Infantry is our only real option outside a sucky garrison, considering we have no freaking land.
>>19496616Ours is what's left is straight up cooler, but yours is damn clever.
With only 3 land, we can't have the hills or mountains required for a mine.
>>19496634it's ok, we'll take hill tribe land and force them into the mines.
>>19496629It even applies a double-meaning of mourning the destruction of our original house and pride in our less than savory ways. I like it, and think that perhaps it could be a second unofficial motto.
We could also get guerillas specced for mountain fighting. Because where else are we gonna fight?
>>19496672not much use in a standing army but then again we could become the vanguard specialists.
I think our military ambitions mostly amount to guarding our shitsack castle and the occasional busting of Hill tribe heads. A garrison and a unit of infantry or raiders is probably all we really need, maybe throw in scouts or archers if we have some points left over.
>>19496672Let's go with this. Or scouts. Scouts are cool too.
>>19496634Ruins or light woods, perhaps?
>>19496690makes sense, make our priority controlling what we have and systematically eliminating tribe chieftans in raids etc. Also raise infighting between them if we can, like raid one clan and leave the banners of a rival tribe.
>>19496690Oh hell yeah, raiders!
>>19496426I'd like to give it a shot sometime.

>>19496711Yeah. So, scouts?
No one fucks with House Bulwark, evidently.
>>19496830yes let's take scouts.
Elite Personal Guard and Veteran Raiders? Showing the core people who stayed with us after disaster fell on our house (and their replacements since), plus the one group of seasoned clansmen who joined us when we fled to the Vale.We are small, but our trials have hardened us considerably and our regular fighting with the clans keeps our edge honed.
>>19496863a grand vision, but for now, scouts.
>>19496863That eats all our points, but being such a small holding we can't really justify having more than 200 troops anyways, and this ought to let us smack around the clans with some measure of impunity (plus be very hard to defeat in our castle).
>>19496863I like it!
>>19496426When would this be run?We demand answers!
>>19496919exactry, if we have scouts to begin with and expand to archers and swordsmen we can route them with impunity and repel attempts to raid with a garrison of archers.
next order of business then? and i Dl'd a pdf of the corebook, which page is the one mentioning recruiting soldiers?
Veteran Personal Guard (Elite is supposed to be better than we would reasonably have), trained raiders, and green scouts since that one guy really wants them (aka the clans are getting better at hiding/ambushing and our Lord wants to train up some better eyes/ears for the rest of the force).
>>19497001Sounds good to me.Someone want to roll up the Lord?
Lord Bussard should be the sort of Lord who goes and leads from the front. Also, anyone who is awesome should see about making us a Bussard sigil/motto pic. The Bulwarks shouldn't get all the good shit just because ours is what's left!

Hoping to catch the rest of this, though. Cheerio.
We've a house and an agenda. What now?
Keeping in tune with the vulture theme and our House Motto, I propose this for our approach: We simply utilize the constant tribal disputes between neighbouring hill tribes to our advantage, either swooping down in the dead of night to slaughter the hill tribes as they recover from battle, weak and weary, or we instigate conflict between the tribes through framing, bribery, kidnapping etc. and then go back to strategy A.It's all for the good of the Vale. For the good of our House. They may view us with distaste, but without the carrion feeders, they'd soon be swamped in filth and corpses. We just keep it from washing up on their doorsteps.
>>19500694I like your style. Even though the hill tribes hold a special hatred for us, they are unable to breach our glorious fortress!
