============

It is the Year 2012 After Diaspora. About two thousand years ago, the Two Day War forced Transhumanity to leave Old Terra behind, and spread to the stars - what was once barely more than a solar empire has become a confederacy of a thousand worlds. At its heart is the ReaDS, the Resource Distribution System that has overcome the problems of both scarcity and mortality, though Transhuman Space is not without its problems. Nearly forty-eight hours ago, First Contact was made, and it was less than friendly. Known as the <Hostile Contact/Vonnies> to the AIs, these Von Neumann machines overcame a small outpost world 'Regulus Prime through sheer attrition.

In response to the threat, the AIs of the ReaDS have put into place Operation: Mahou Shoujo, a gambit to exploit an apparent bug in the enemy IFF system to by time for the countermeasure 'Project Riposte' to be completed.

You are currently being the Demi-Godlike AI's Beloved Tomboyish Daughter. You have just assisted in the resleeving of your new Bestest Best Friend in the Whole Wide World, Alexa J. Barker - younger sister and fork of the legendary hero ALEX L. BARKER, THE RED COMET WHO GRASPS VICTORY FROM THE JAWS OF DEFEAT. The two of you had gone down to the Armory, where you were outfitted with the equipment that you are to be trained in to combat the threat of the <Hostile Contact/Vonnies>. After a mishap with your -FLIGHTSUIT-'s rather fickle mass modulation based flight system, you and Alex decided to go practice with your new toys.

You are now headed to go clean up.

The moment Alexa declares that the two of you should "hit the showers", you discover how easy the -FLIGHTSUIT-'s easy egress function is, shucking it off in a single sweep of your arm and throwing it at one of the mainenance automatons to have cleaned and stored. Alexa gives you one of those looks, reminding you that you are violating tradition here. But you are halfway to the showers by the time that it registers.

"Wait," Alexa says to your retreating back. "I don't know where the showers are..." She sighs, and brings them up on herdown your iGlasses, stripping down to her carpace as she trudges on behind you.

You turn the water on, to a scalding temperature that sends a new feeling shivering through your skin. You aren't sure you like it, as though the heat is pleasant as it runs down your face, your hair, your body, the droplets sting as they touch your skin. Perhaps this is the human sense that is known as pain - a far from pleasant experience, but even then it is new to you and something you are glad to experience. You catalogue it in the rear of your mind as 'interesting, mildly unpleasant.'

You turn the temperature down, slightly, to a more pleasant temperature. Far warmer than the liquid of the Glass Mother, or the shallows of the pool, yet not burning as the old.

You here the clang of ALexa's carapace crashing into one of the maintenance bots, too large for one of them to handle alone. The sound of another faucet turns on, and in spite of yourself you feel the urge to sing.

"What song is that?" Alexa asks over the showers.

"I dunno, probably something momma listens to." You respond. "I'm really just going with what feels right, you know?"

"No..." the other girl trails off. You think you are getting better at identifying the emotions of humans - you believe that the tone you hear in Alexa's voice is indicative of that human emotion known as jealousy. "I don't..."

Hmmm... Jealousy, perhaps mixed with that human condition known as sadness. Which is mostly definitely a bad thing for your bestest best friend to be feeling. The bits in your mind start computing, trying to find a solution to the problem. A-ha! You know just thing.

"Join in!" You turn to her. She's covered in some sort of foamy... foam. You wonder what it is.

"Ah," despite the fact that her back is turned, you can tell she's flustered. "I can't sing. Well, my brother can't sing, and I doubt that I got any skills that he doesn't..."

You come up from behind her with a hug. "Oh, sure you do! I'm just a fork of momma, but momma can't sing any more than Alex could." Your hands slip from the foamy stuff, up to certain bits of her that are quite a bit larger than your analogous parts. "Now come on, sing with me!" You jiggle your hands around, and with them her. "Oh, and what's with the foamy stuff? And why are yours bigger than mine?"

Alexa is a bright red. "G-genetics. And soap. You need it to take a shower. And could you...?"

You let go. "Sorry. Now come on, sing!"

You start singing, and nervously the other girl joins in.

As you and Alexa go through your impromptu duet you notice two things. Firstly, while she has a most -lovely- contralto that sends all sorts of interesting shivers up your spine, she could -really- learn to keep herself in key. C sharp is not a note conductive to the key of F, bar certain circumstances that did not come up in your little song. Secondly, you notice that lathering that white foamy foam on to your skin leaves a most interesting feeling, that will be categorized near 'itch scratching' and be explored at a later, more private time.

You find your big shirt outside the shower room, next to Alexa, who has dried herself off and put on a much more intricate garb involving belts and slacks and a very interestingly tight wifebeater. "Let's go get dinner."

"Yeah..." you give the shirt a loathesome look, before reluctantly throwing it on. "Alexa, what is it with transhumes and clothes? They seem like a completely superfluous holdout from Old Terra culture when living environs were neither wholly safe nor wholly predictable. Why all this emphasis on them when they're unneccessary?"

She leads on towards the Cafeteria. "Well, that's part of it," she replies. "There's also the fact that they keep... certain bits out of the way when you're working. And the whole 'fashion' thing that's a big part of our culture." The Elevator arrives at the cafeteria floor. "Plus, there's a certain sexual implication that nudity has that tends to make people... uncomfortable."

Alexa goes over to one of the compilers, and pulls up a recipe for high density nutrient pasta that Firewall had developed for its agents. Ordering it made, she leans against the counter while she waits.

You pop over to the compiler next to hers, making a note that matching her choice is probably the best thing you can do right now. Your body needs to refuel after that workout, and the extra nutrition ought to help you build up your strength. You also queue up a pair of apples - you have a feeling that the pasta is probably going to be rather bland, even with the MAX-VITAMIN TASTE-GOOD SAUCE that will be compiled atop it. You would have queued up a pair of chocolate bars, but the Firewall compiler doesn't have access to the openuse net and the delicious broblerones for some strange reason.

A moment or two passes in silence, whilst you contemplate her answer to your question.

"Wait." The thought hits you.

"What?" she asks.

"Why would sexual implications bother or threaten people?" You ask. "I mean, it's a biological imperative, and noting the memesphere trends sexual innuendo has never ceased trending since the ReaDS began keeping records. It completely inundates your - our - culture, and yet people feel bothered by it?" You turn to her. "I mean, it's supposed to feel good, right? That's what orgasms are for..."

A beep goes off, signifying the completion of the two apples. You pick one up in each hand.

Alexa turns a bright red. "Well... yes. But... the act is when we feel most vulnerable, so I guess that sort of-" You stuff one of the apples in her mouth.

Chocolate lacks the hydrogen bonds that give the issues with compiling water based solids (ice-cream, ice, etc). A quick Endothermic Reaction can keep it in place, where as that doesn't work with water because its intermolecular forces are all wonky.

Totally not BSing on the spot.
>>
>>20024013
Or, more specifically/well thought out, water's high specific heat makes the endothermic reactions lag in effect. There are some compiler recipe's that can make ice that use predictive algorithms on the motion of the water as it shifts in the microseconds it takes to freeze, but even these (which eat up a fuckton of memory) don't work 100% of the time.
>>
>>20024013
>Totally not BSing on the spot.
It's funny because chocolate does contain hydrogen bonds, as does everything else containing fats.
>>
>>20024013
Here's my take on it: it's a very BRIEF heat flash. Food can take it just fine, it's like taking it outside on a really hot day, but for a weapon to be repeatedly subjected to brief heat stresses beyond the specifically-engineered chamber and barrel is just ASKING for combat failure.
>>
>>20024096
thus the double retcon to specific heat lag effect.

chemistry was always my worst science fuck that noise.
>>
>>20024082
303k is 30c. That's just above room temperature, so it should be fine for most things. Chocolate would have definitely started melting after a while of that though, and we have been described as having to wait for a reasonable amount of time for stuff to compile.

You and Alexa nom on your respective apples while the dreaded Super Nutrient Pasta finishes up its compilation process. You find the fruit to be quite delicious, and wonder what other sort of fruits you might enjoy - mother always found the concept of starfruit to be interesting, simply because of its interesting shape. You personally would like to give a lemople - a apple textured fruit that supposedly tastes like a lemon tamed with sugar cane - a try. For some reason, the old Terran banana also holds a strange attraction, you have no idea why.

The apples are long since gone when the pasta is finished. You and Alexa walk over to the table.

"You've got a great voice, Alexa," you say, gingerly avoiding the temptation to bring up complicated fun things.

"Nah, that's the morph." She takes her first bite of the... greenish noodles. They don't look particularly appetizing, even without being liberally slathered in that gray sauce. "I'm like my brother - I can't carry a tune in a bucket. Give us a Stradivarius, and either of us would probably end up sounding like nails on a chalk board. You've got some talent, though."

You toy around with the pasta, suprised at the gusto with which your friend goes at it. Perhaps its an acquired taste she picked up from her brother? "I'm sure with lessons you'd be able to pick it up in no time!"

She gives you a small little smile. "Maybe."

>Field too long
>>
>>20024401

You take your first bite, which is immediately followedd by a good thing and a bad thing. The Good thing is that your friend, who had finished her plate and was now rubbing her stomach contentedly, doesn't notice that you spit it out in contempt and disgust - that shit's worse than the open bolognese, and it doesn't even taste like -FREEDOM-. The bad news is that the reason why your friend doesn't notice is that the base's alarm klaxons are blaring, warning all personel to go to combat stations, and that the Hangar was to be locked down and flooded in thirty seconds.

"Well, we're all the personel..." Alexa mutters.

"What the hell are our battle stations, anyways?" you ask Alexa. A servitor-bot is already there with her carapace, her powered armor being towed slowly behind by little swarm of them, much like a group of ants towing a large acorn. Your flight suit has also materialized next to you, fresh and clean and ready to don in the (un)fortunately less interesting manner of equipping it. You throw off your shirt and slip into it. "Mother's memories don't have anything of the sort planned out - she was going to leave that to the Firewall people."

"Dunno," she says as she slips into the thing. "Base server doesn't have them in the protocols yet - not suprising, given that we're not even supposed to be online until tomorrow." The chest piece of the Vaguard Armor opens up. "Best thing we can do is get over to the Hangar ASAP and hope to all the Gods and minor deities that this is a malfunction." She storms off to the stairway, cracking the floor a bit as she goes.

"Right," you say, zooming through the air behind her. Your glad you managed to get that function of the suit down.

-Three minutes until hangar lockdown and flooding...-

Wait that's odd. Why is it -more- than it had- oh fuck that can't be good.

When you arrive at the hangar, there are no spiders made of tiny mechas, nor any cloud of delta shaped machines, waiting for food. It is empty, but for a few submarines and suits of pressurized powered armor, meant for exploring the grand depths around the base. It is a floor unto its own, perhaps the biggest room in the base - you'd -love- to try flying out in here, if only because it would feel just like the open air. The only thing out of place is a girl's voice, which suspiciously sounds your age.

"THAT POT SMOKING SONUVABITCH!"

>Wat do?

>>20024711
Look, if some of the girls that we picked up have body mods or body lines from MimiMODE or some trending accessories from Face Consortium, we're not going to force them to get rid of them.

"Base," Alexa commands, "I want a thermal scan of the Hangar -now-."

A display comes up on your Kinect Specs, the entirety of the Hangar in hues of blue, green, orange and yellow. There are two bright points that you suppose are you and Alexa, given the fact that one of them is extraordinarily bright and extraordinarily huge. There is another heat signature a few meters ahead of you, seemingly typing away at a virtual keyboard. That's probably the girl who has just screamed out about a 'pot smoking sonuvabitch.'

-Mom- you send over to your mother. -What the heck is going on? There's an intruder in the Beta Site.

-Don't worry dear.- Her response is brief and swift. -Ah, my boss just decided to inform me of what he did. That's your third squadmate for Beta Site's squad. If she hasn't already, do try to mak sure she doesn't get drowned...-

At that particular moment, the base's system goes off. -Code Green. Return to noncombat stations.-

You decide that it would probably be better to make sure whoever this chick is isn't a threat to the base. You slowly, silently float over to her, though your attempt at subtlety is ruined by Alexa's rather loud following. The girl looks up from what must have been a virtual data stream on her Arglasses.

"H-hello?" you half greet, half ask.

"Oh no." she says. She holds her throat, as though just realizing the pitch of her voice again. "Oh fucking hell no. No, no, no, that did -not- just happen." She reaches under her skirt to feel around, and you blush now with the knowledge of how improprietary that is. She stops, removing her hand and staring at it in disbelief. "Oh -fuck my life-. That -did- just happen."

Looks like Rick dumped theTRUTHisoutthere in a brand spanking new female body (wonder if it's a Saber).
Of course, by their reaction, they self-identify as male, which means that he'll probably have a 50% chance of triggering the IFF bug, and so is likely to die horribly.
>>
>>20025156
It probably is. I'm guessing Rick found out about whoever was behind "thetruthisoutthere" and tossed them in a little girl morph for amusement purposes and to test the IFF stuff.

"Ummm..." You aren't quite sure what to say to the girl, but since you're going to be working together you figure the best place to start would be the introductions. "I'm Icarus, this is Alexa." Alexa, to her credit, waves at the newcomer, though her grenade laucher is still trained on her. "Mother said that you're going to be the new member of Beta Team?"

The girl's face breaks, a disbelieving smil matched with the uncontrolled twitching of her eye.

"That's right!" The holographic image of the most chill and relaxed man you have ever laid eyes upon steps out from behind a sub. "Truthy, dear, meet the girls you'll be joining for the duration of Operation Mahou Shoujo. And next time you play around on the Omnitube, do try to remember that the only people who are authorized to know about the operation are its members."

"D-dear?" She says. "You fucked with my state-vector? YOU FUCKED WITH MY STATE VECTOR? YOU SONUVA-"

"Yep!" He grins. "And removed a few things you weren't meant to know." He sighs. "Next time, don't leave such obvious alling cards. Polymeric Falcighol Derivation -indeed-." He pulls out a blunt, and lights it. "Just be glad I switched you sober, sistah. Else your memories wouldn't be meshing so clean. Have fun being the little girl in both body -and- mind!" He tosses a thumbs up to you and Alexa. "You sistahs, I'm hoping you will be the treating my baby sis with the niceness. She's a good girl, even if she does the acting up on occasion."

He then vanishes.

"So..." you begin. "Truthy was it? Welcome to the team."

The other girl resists the urge to slam her head against the wall. "No, it's..."

"No, it used to be Rick," she says. "But given that Rick just fucking mindraped a more libertarian part of himself into me, I guess that means a new name is in order." She closes her eyes, and rubs her temples as though she has a massive headache. "The truth -is- out there. So I suppose that Veritas is as eloquent a name as any."

"Ve-ri-tas," you roll the name around your tongue. It is much more like your own than Alexas - the same number of syllables, the similar sounds. "Are you a modified infomorph as well?"

She nods. Her look glazes over, the realization of what (s?)he had done to herself only now hitting her as she said it.

"Oh!" your eyes light up. She isn't exploring her new body with the same vigor you were at her stage, so you decide it can't hurt to ask. "Have you ever been sleeved in a biomorph before? What sort of foods are good - I've only had a chance to try apples and bolognese and chocolate and nutripasta. The chocolate was the best by far, though the apples were good too."

She's now crying. Her voice is small. "Gods -damnit- me..."

You aren't quite sure how to react. So you run with the first impulse that jumps to your mind and hug her. Over her shoulder, you motion with your head for Alexa to join in. She gives you a look, but shrugs, her power armor sauntering over and taking the two of you in a bear hug.

"I know the situation is... less than ideal," you tell her. "But we're a team now, and from what I know, Teams stick together. Alexa and I are here for you, if you need us." Alexa mouths 'speak for yourself', and this time it is your turn to give -her- the look. She promptly shakes her head and grins.

At least there's a bright side to this - you may well be geting a hang of this whole 'social interaction' thing!

Actually, "Mind Rape Them Into A Good Person" is the equivalent to capital punishment in setting. It's rarely followed through with - mostly the cortical stacks are kept on a prison server, but it does happen every now and again.

(Admittedly, this has a lot to do with my personal opinions of right and wrong, which are quite elegant but cannot fit within this thread.)
>>
>>20025782
Continue the hug for a bit longer.

Lead Veritas to the kitchen, whip up some cocoa, which ought to be great it's liquid chocolate from what we've heard, take off this restrictive and annoying armor and ask is Veritas needs anything, if there's anything we can do to help.

Changing who someone is involuntarily is even worse than killing someone. At least give them the choice between permadeath and reprogramming.
>>
>>20026050
Yes. If you want to create a productive member of society, create one from scratch. We can do that.
The new person's still different from the old person, but it doesn't leave the new person with hang-ups from the old life and completely violate the concept of free will.

Because I don't want crazies on the team.
>>
>>20026050
Yeah. Everyone deserves the choice to be good or evil. If they chose evil, society has the right to punish them for their choice, but not to make the choice for them. At least, not without consent.
>>
>>20026129

I think giving Icarus a sister might be a little too much.
>>
>>20026129
No, we don't kill Veritas.
We need more data points to see if modified infomorphs trigger the IFF bug or not.
We can't just depend on 1 data point (Icarus) for our entire production line of DOLLs.
>>
>>20026153
Well, Alex isn't going to give us another one. We're gonna have to make forks for the DOLLs anyway.

>>20026174
Argreed. Let's make forks of Mom instead of taking in the crazy. Then we can feed to Veritas to the Cthulhu!
>>
>>20026129
Now she's changed, there's no reason to kill her unless she wants to die. I think we should offer her the choice to back out though. If she wants to do it then fine, but forcing her is not going to help anything, no matter what Rick thinks.
>>
>>20026129
>let's kill the victim
No. Though Rick might've purposely botched the job to cover his tracks when the Vonnie eat her, so maybe using her as an investigator would be good.
>>
>>20026129
What? No. That's not better in any way.
>>
>>20026215
>Now she's changed, there's no reason to kill her unless she wants to die
Then the original theTRUTH was executed, and his remaining algorithms used to create this new State Vector.
How is that different from executing a person, and then using the body because it's still useful to society?

>>20026288

It's questionable how much of the 'Same Person' they are.

Instead of Debating about this endlessly, I'm just going to go: Treat Veritas fairly, kindly and give her a chance...no matter what she did...she's pretty traumatized now.

That's my side of it at least.

Also: We NEED to tell our Mum about this. She's not going to be happy at all.
>>
>>20026258
The original truth didn't have a body, and bodies are mass-produced in factories anyway.
Why would you use the remaining algorithms when you could just write better ones? It just leaves the new truth hating herself and crying right now. It's just meaningless cruelty.

>>20026288
We could keep her on the project as the one who serves tea or something, until this crisis is over. Rick said she'd be fine knowing about it if she was on the project.

>>
>>20026332
>Treat Veritas fairly, kindly and give her a chance...no matter what she did...she's pretty traumatized now.
All the freakin' way. And telling Mom on Rick.

And let's be Veritas.
>>
>>20026368
No we fucking don't. Why would we need to test this? So we can start doing it lots more if it works out? What would be the reason for that?
>>
>>20026368

Mother knows about there being a new member, maybe knows about it being TheTruth. Not certainly knows about it being based on rick and likely doesn't know that currently she's crying her eyes out and traumatized.

She knows that Veritas is the third member of Beta, provided by Rick. She likely doesn't know what Veritas just told us.
>>
>>20026393
Because if the IFF bug is triggered by Veritas, and NOT Icarus or Alex, then we need to identify what caused the bug to be triggered.
Same with if Veritas doesn't trigger the bug but Icarus does; we need to compare the EEG's on both and see what's different.

Oh, cool. Well if we need to do mind-rape we should do physical rape as well and see if the emotional trauma effects the IFF. And we could also try putting two minds in the same body to constantly fight over every action! Two little girls, a little girl and a guy, a little girl and and infomorph...
Anything to make a back-up system which we might not even use more effective.

It'd be much easier to do that with a test subject we've made.

>Last post for the night.

Alexa carries the two of you back up the stairs to the cafeteria, somewhat awkwardly, given the manner that her arms are carrying you and the new girl. While the other girl's tears begin to cease in a bout of hiccups and sniffles, you decide that you ought to inform your mother.

-Mother, I have a question,- you send over her way. -Does, ah, Rick have any ethics protocols written atop his code. Because our new member seems to be taking the whole 'no longer a male engendered infomorph' thing rather poorly.-

-Yes, I'd imagine- your mother responds. You can almost read the deadpan. -But at least it's proof of concept for that "girlception" scheme of his. Even if he is only able to get past the 'don't be evil' clause by doing it to himself while stoned out of his mind.-

-Wat.-

-Long story short.- she says. -Turn male or none engendered infomorphs to female engendered infomorphs without creating incompatibility errors with their old memories - like a resleeving but for gender instead of body.- She pauses for a moment. -That particular fork of his was high out his mind when he came up with the idea. But if she works, it'll ease the experience gap for the DOLLS program by quite a bit.-

-Yeah, well,- you say -She's as traumatized as he was high.- You pat down the poor girl. -Possibly more so.-

-I'll chew him out.- She reassures you. -But, given that he's pretty much untouchable, I can't guarantee anything more than reploss. You have some of my memories, you know how he can get..."

You arrive in the cafeteria.

They're going to survive anyway, in the worst case scenario we can evacuate them all.
Yes those cases are obviously flawed, as is the Veritas case. That's what I'm fucking saying. Mind-rape is worse than physical rape and the mental trauma might do something to the IFF because it would make her mentally 'older'. Why aren't you trying that? Because it's morally wrong and stupid, just like what Rick did.
>>
>>20026769
Well we can't very well cuddle when Alexa is wearing powered armor and we have our flight suit on. If you really insist we can throw the shirt back on, but I really don't see the point.
>>
>>20026811
No, I'm saying it's an illogical procedure. Two minds in one body would cause strife as one tries to become the "dominant" one in a Tyler Durden scenario, whereas one mind in two bodies allows an individual(s?) the ability to be in two places at once, which is not only strategically viable, but would allow for flawless synchronization of stealth ops. Think the game Commando: Behind Enemy Lines or Splinter Cell's co-op mode if you were controlling all available characters simultaneously. If you WERE to put multiple identities in one body, it'd be better to cram as many in there as possible, forcing them to form a hive mind gestalt, as any one personality would have trouble dominating all of the others into submission.

So in summary, two minds in one body is simultaneously four too many and dozens too few.
>>
>>20026848
So you would sacrifice an entire planet, all of the resources that it contains, just to salve your conscience?
The Veritas case isn't flawed, as she can still provide a useful data point. And if trauma is going to invalidate a girl's IFF bug-triggering ability, then that's also important to know, so that we don't have cascading failures in the field when the other teams are brought online. Girl A fights one too many battles, gets 'older', is killed by Vonnies, which causes trauma in the Girls B and C, which gets them killed. And then it would spread throughout the entire base.
>>
>>20027057
While a trauma test is a valid concern, Truth is not a valid test of that due to the forced gender conversion.

If she fails to trigger said bug it could now be the trauma OR a failed conversion.
>>
>>20027057
I mostly agree with the other guy, but you do have a point about the trauma.
>>
>>20027167
a failed conversion on two counts even, AI to human and male to female.

Truth is a useless test subject.
>>
>>20027057
Yes, I'm would be willing to take the risk of sacrificing the planet to salve my conscience. I think we could still win if Veritas had never existed and if we didn't it's not like there's a shortage of planets in the universe. Humanity has spread massively and these vonnies are our first alien contact.
Luckily for you I guess it's not on my concience, it's on Rick's, but I'm definitely going to vote against raping a little girl to test the effects of mental trauma if you're starting to think that's a good idea.
>>
>>20027186
On the other hand, Icarus and Alexa are perfect subjects. One is an unaltered female fork of a female AI and the other is a test of Adult male forking usefulness.

Both have "standard" human bodies, are the right (mental)age, and have no ongoing mental trauma.
>>
>>20027273
Strictly speaking, they're both altered to match the patterns of a ~15 year old girl.
>>
>>20027273
>One is an unaltered female fork of a female AI and the other is a test of Adult male forking usefulness
'Unaltered'?
Both of them have had their State Vectors massively altered in order to for their brain scans to read similar to that of a 15 year old human girl.
They aren't the same people as their originals, no less than Veritas is.
>>
>>20027351
Though Veritas is closer to her original, I'd say. Based on what's been said, if I didn't misunderstand it.
>>
>>20027310
Well, Icarus was "birthed" as a young girl. Thus the unaltered fork bit. She was created as a young girl, not made as a direct clone then altered.

Alexa is indeed a test of whether altering Adult male patterns to young girls will be useful.

One of the marks of good writing is emotional investment. You care about the characters, and what they go through enough that they become more than just a character, but something you actually care about.

I think maybe people here wouldn't be arguing quite so hard as they are if they weren't somehow invested in the characters.
Either in Veritas for going through something traumatic, or in Icarus for wanting to help someone and not knowing quite what to do.
>>
>>20027522
Or perhaps it's even simpler than that, and some people are outraged and the thought of a little girl being hurt, while others don't think of her as an actual little girl.
Not that I mean to dispute that this is good writing.

Let's not get too big headed here. People on 4chan love to argue. I've seen a post about a French guy getting assaulted at McDonald's for wearing funny eyegear turn into a 500 post argument about the nature and viability of Transhumanism.
>>

Regardless, it wasn't because the French dude's plight "moved" anyone, it's just because 4chan was made for yelling at each other about stuff over the internet and occasionally pretending to be the little AI girl.
>>

I am familiar with the thread in question, as it happens. It was more complicated than that, and there were at least a couple agents provocateur, but I take your point.

>>
>>20027645
We have no idea what will happen in the face of the enemy, and mindrape is a possibility. Besides, it's not so much about seeing what would happen in a combat scenario, but rather what will happen to the construct simply via emotional trauma overload. Will it degrade into nothingness? Crack and fracture into multiple constructs? Override its code? This is all valuable information and probably the most useful Veritas can ever be in its current condition. May as well squeeze some lemonade out of this lime before we cast it aside.

Also you're really freakin' creepy for that speculation.
>>
>>20027805
It's mental and emotional development is far from standard human protocol and every avenue of said development will have to be explored sooner or later. You can have one really unhappy girl doll now or a whole lot of dead ones later, it's your choice.
>>
>>20028056
Yes, I agree, and I meant to say as much. Functionally, she is human. I'm sorry if that was unclear.

That said, she is still strictly speaking an AI. Just because she's wetware doesn't change that.
>>
>>20028056
Well yes, until her State Vector is uploaded again, edited, and then resleaved.
Since the State Vector is also in the Cortical Stack, doing an on-the-fly State Vector edit might even be possible.
>>
>>20028106
And isn't that a creepy thought.
>>
>>20028065
A beserker is just as unstable as a rape victim, not exactly something you'd hinge the survival of humanity on.
>Also you're really freakin' creepy for that speculation.
I'm not arguing from the perspective of your average joe, I'm arguing from a pragmatist's perspective. Military officials looking to save the human race aren't exactly afforded the luxury of human decency. Someone's gotta drop the bomb on Hiroshima, and someone's gotta torture the little girl to see what happens.
>>20028106
See, there you go. We now have an otherwise useless construct upon which to test these theories, that's something worth utilizing.
>>
>>20028066
AIs in human bodies is hardly a new science. READs has talked about them before. I doubt we're going to have huge psychological problems that we won't understand.

I've already laid out how I want to test the DOLLs system. If Icarus has been altered we only have one valid test case currently, if not two.

>>20028106
Letting the state vector be edited would be silly. We're not going to let the AIs upload until we can test. Giving them bodies that could edit themselves would also be silly.
>>
>>20028161
We are perfectly capable of saving Harper's Reach with just human girls. The DPS is only a last resort.

>>20028165
I don't see how being altered or not enters into it. As I see it, the only thing that matters is the way she is currently. For example, even if Icarus was altered from a copy of Daedalus to her current state, a vonnie should react the same way to her that it would to a being created to be exactly like her.
>>
>>20028382
>>20028382
We have no idea how they target things. The only two data points we have are age(less then a certain age) and gender. They seem to use EEG reads and the like, but that may not be all.

If Icarus is a altered copy of Daedalus(who know's how old she'd read as unaltered) the alterations may not be complete enough to trigger the IFF, if AI forks in human bodies even trigger said bug.

See the problem? There are two points of failure there, the alterations and the being an AI tranfered into a human body. Having an unaltered fork let's us test one variable at a time.
>>
>>20028508
by "unaltered" fork I mean a fork created with the appropriate characteristics of a young girl's mind instead of being downgraded like Icarus may have been.
>>
I warned you about Rick. I TOLD YOU BRO!
No seriously. When the Rick vs Truth thing first came up, I said not to trust either of them.
I think this proves my point.

And even if mindrape is the setting's equivalent of capital punishment, and regarded appropriate for high treason, our kind boss just did it WITHOUT DUE FUCKING PROCESS.
>>
>>20028546
I see what you're saying. I think the reason we disagree is that you think there's been 'extra room', a different mind layout, or the like left in Icarus by her downgrading. If so, that is a definite probability. I was assuming we had altered her to be exactly like an AI created from the ground up to be girlish. If that is the case, do you agree that alteration would be neglible?
>>
>>20028508
And with such a botched sample, we may as well see how deep the rabbit hole goes. Maybe let Icarus rehabilitate it a bit and then force some other trauma on it, see how it reacts, allow for an interim of rehabilitation, and then repeat the cycle with new variables such as a shorter rehabilitation duration this time or perhaps lead her to suspect Icarus is feeding us info to make this easier(which she sort of is seeing as her first reaction was to spill the beans to mommy). It's little more than a salvage op at this point, but it's better than using it as some sniffling tea maid.
>>
>>20028549
technically, we don't know the due process for AI "forks"

>>20028628
Something like those possibilities yes.

... I don't want to say any alteration would be negligible until we have more information on the nanites. Doing it the way you said would bring her almost in line with the test case I want to do. But we didn't roll a perfect "20" when making her and something could have been left behind.

I do feel paranoid typing that out though.

2. Is there any data difference between an infomorph fork that is forked then has its State Vector modified, versus a fork that is modified during the copy process?
Since both are not activated till after the modifications are done, there should be no difference between the two, even down to the qubit level, right?

I demand a joke "Nazi" NPC. He must be around forever, popping up at random.

To create Icarus, the following process occurred:
1. Daedalus creates a map of her state vector.
2. Daedalus runs EEG simulation on said map, modifying until it reaches an acceptable percentage of error from the average 'pubescent human female'.
3. Daedalus saves the modified map to the cortical stack within the new sleeve.
4. Icarus is born.

To create Veritas, the following process occurred:
1. Rick ASSUMES DIRECT CONTROL over the fork of his that leaked the classified info, deactivating it and mapping it.
2. Rick implanted a cascading algorithm within the structure of the map after running simulations to get it to reach the desired EEG reading upon the algorithm's completion.
3. Rick saved the map to the cortical stack in the new sleeve.
4. Veritas continues her session in the new sleeve, noting shortly that her internal reference program has changed.

The difference between these two methods (making a new, or changing an old) is that the latter is still compatible with her prior existence's memory structure given that the initial change is a minor (if incredibly complicated to get right) insertion rather than a major change. Instead of 'new person, with the old's memories lying around like a handy reference' it's 'same person, who just came to the realization that they are transexual.' Even without the other things that are on Verita's mind, that alone is some considerable duress on her emotions.

That she -isn't- at the stage of 'what my players saw' is a testament to one of the reasons why Rick is the leader.

I make no promises. But nor do I definitively say 'nope.avi'.

[spoilersneeded] I wish I know who the first two girls were.[/spoilerNAO]

So, you count Icarus as a new separate entity. That's what "Alpha" means, fully independent AIs right?

Meanwhile, Truth just had his "brain" scrambled until it look close enough to a girl's.

the NPC never does anything, but he always has the most terrible advice, usually about how more "experimentation" would be so useful to the current war.

Because whenever someone thinks of going against him he can just press a button and rewrite them to be perfectly loyal and willing to die for him? I don't think you need to ADD a Nazi character.

So you're saying we should let a known security risk just get all buddy buddy with our highest priority projects.
>>20029761
Now now, this isn't the time for namecalling. There's much science to be done.

That should be *pronoun, not *program.

Also, just as a note as to why Daedalus didn't do this, it's because she neither knows how to run 'girlception', and does not have enough processing power to determine the correct alterations to make within a reasonable amount of time. Rick himself had to shutdown his forks for about an hour and brute force the problem.

Pretty much. Less 'brain scrambled' and more 'had an epiphany,' though. Think what was done to the CEO's kid in INCEPTION rather than traditional brainwashing.

>>20033720
He can't do that. Rick could only do what he did because Veritas was a fork of himself. Albeit an independent fork who's primary job was to swat him any time he went too tyrannical.

If he tried to do that to anyone else, it would violate his ethics protocols and flood his system with a THC simulator until he is sufficiently not evil.

(The point being that he and his forks can handle freaky weird shit.)
