The story so far: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%201989You can't decide if the droning of the greyhound's turboprops are soothing or merely irritating. You've been in the air for almost a half hour out of what's looking to be a three hour flight, give or take, south to Kadena air base, one of the few 'joint' bases the IJAF operates with the USAF. The fact that you'll be flying the rest of the way to the 'states on a MAC C-141 somehow doesn't bother you too much. Things are moving fast enough that you're still not totally over your initial euphoria, though it's slowly getting to the point where it's worn offIt probably doesn't help the situation at all that Stinger sent your the entire 'squadron', not just you. And Slider snores loud enough that you can hear her over the props. Kind of an achievement, you think. She's asleep forward of you, where Ice is sitting, reading... something. You're not sure what, and, at any rate, you're not sure you care. Maverick and Goose are sitting behind you, talking quietly to each other.
Those two, now.... Maverick is your former partner in crime- hell, half the things you got in trouble for, she was involved in. Usually right next to you, or egging you on. Goose is young, and she just arrived with the squadron at the start of the cruise. She seems like an OK sort, if a bit of a klutz, but she's new, and that can be harsh, especially on witches. Maverick's plainly taken Goose under her wing, though. You're not sure if that's good or bad for the young witch. Meanwhile, next to you, Merlin's reading a magazine- it's equally as likely it's a tech magazine as it is to be teen beat or tiger beat or some shit like that. She's on her first cruise, as well- replacing your former RIO, who'd resigned his commission over a 'disagreement' with Ice. You've got some time before you land- greyhounds are slow, despite the name. You could always do with some more sleep, you think, but it's also a rare chance to talk to any of the girls- though you'll have to wake Slider up if you want to talk to her. You have a tennis ball, though, so that'll be easy enough. []Sleep! Might as well enjoy it while you can![]Talk! You probably have some catching up to do! (specify who and what)

[x] Talk! (Merlin seems the preferred choice, here.)“So, you exited?” You say, turning in your seat to look at Merlin. “Hell of a big deal, Top gun, on your first cruise?” She closes her magazine, and shrugs, looking at you. “ I don't think I really earned it. I'm just your backseater, after all. I can't even fly... “ she trails off, looking down. You'd been briefed in on that, when she was assigned to you- something to do with 'emerging talents' and 'incompatibility with new magical engines' or something of that nature- rare, but not entirely unheard-of. It's also not something she's particularly happy about, apparently. It's not a subject you've brought up, till now. “yeah, right” you say, maybe a tad more forcefully than necessary. “Didn't earn it my ass. You're the only person in the fleet that can track those damn night witches on radar when they decide to go quiet, and that phoenix shot was a thing of beauty. What I do get is you're an amazing RIO, you make missiles do impossible shit, and can you imagine hitting bugs at speed? Or a bird?” “God, birds” Maverick pipes up from behind you, clearly listening in. “One time, in the academy, I hit a gull on the way out. Broke my arm in two places, through my shield” “yep!” you add in. “and we're still relatively comfortable at our ceiling. “High altitude flight sucks” agrees Maverick, leaning forward over the backs of your seats. “especially if you go bare-leg, like us.” Merlin looks down at her lap- technically, being a witch, she doesn't have to wear pants, and she seems to prefer the full flight suit over the shirt-only version used by most witches, but more often than not, she'll go around without them, trying to fit in with the rest of the witches. That she's also, yet again, acquired the poncho liner your brother sent you, and currently has it draped across her lap, doesn't escape your notice either. [] heyyyy... I recognize that wubby. And we turnaround a lot faster, we can surge sorties with pretty minimal turnaround time, compared to a witch.”“we can inflight refuel, too, you know” Maverick says. “Juicebox flights?”“oh... yeah” you'd forgotten about those. Some genius, a while back, figured out that you could cram fruit juice or something in an external tank and have a normal bird buddytank for witches. Coke won a contract to try it with carbonated sugar water about 18 months ago, but the 'high altitude' part of the test flight failed miserably when the pressurized external fuel tank ruptured, and left one hell of a mess. It's said the ground crew was cleaning up that intruder for days. Sticky, dried coke. Yech. (1/2)

You think about it for a second, then favor her with a lewd grin. “Isn't it a little early to be just taking over the covers?” you say. “I mean, shouldn't at least wait till we're sleeping together?” Her blush deepens by a couple of shades. “I...I... Next time I talk to Jake, I'll ask him to send me another one, if you want one” She doesn't say anything, but nods. [x] Get out of the bird ASAP and stretch your legs. You're really not looking forward to that -141 flight.Despite being a pilot yourself, and despite having flown eight-hour-plus missions of your own before, there's something about being jammed in a cargo plane's bay that makes your legs ache in pain. And you've not even grabbed your shit, yet. It's going to be a Long, long flight. The Greyhound pilot touched his bird down almost daintily, and for a second there, you didn't even believe you were on the ground. Then again, any idiot can land on a two mile long, smooth, paved, STATIONARY strip. It takes talent to do it on a strip a few hundred yards long, that also happens to be rolling in the sea. As soon as the doors open, you scramble out, catching the familiar whiff of jet fuel and sea air. The base is situated close enough to the beaches that you can see the ocean, though you won't have time to enjoy the beaches, here. That said, you're headed to California, and you'll damn sure enjoy the beaches there! The flight line is, of course, controlled, but it's fairly laxly enforced- typical airforce, you think, wandering amongst parked F-15s and F-4s. No sense of security. There's a pair of C-141s parked off at the far edge of the strip, next to a large hangar with it's doors gaping open. The other side of the base is IJAF- you see F-15CFs parked next to Mitsubishi F1s and some of their newer F-2s, as well as a pair of jets you can't identify. They've got a very odd layout- intake mounted on the dorsal center line, and a pair of upswept canards just behind the cockpit.(1/2)
“hey! Hey!, wait up!” Merlin calls, and you hear her running to catch up. You turn, letting her catch up, and see Maverick and Goose not far behind. And behind them, chatting amicably, are Ice and Slider. “were you just going to leave me?” Merlin demands, catching her breath. “you were off that cargo plane so fast I thought it was on fire, for a second.” you laugh. “nah, just wanted to stretch my legs.” She frowns up at you. “what? I can't help I have these long dancer's legs!” She giggles, and you frown. “well, you have a long 'something' anyway” Maverick says. “and how would YOU know?!” you demand, rapidly losing control of the conversation. “I hear things” She says nonchalantly. “Bah. She nods. “No harm in it, Just talking to the plane. It won't tell me anything classified.” “It won't... wait, what?” You grew up around magic, but Merlin’s still a bit of an unknown to you- your mom was USN, and your sister's at the citadel, but they're both what you think of as 'normal'- that is, they strap jets to their legs and fly around. I don't need the 20 pounds of random crap, remember?” She laughs. “yeah, ok, sure, Mr. 'of course I packed my bowling ball because I thought carriers had bowling alleys'”“I did!” you say, grabbing Merlin at the same time. “Heyyyyy merlin! Guess what time it is!” “No! Nononononononono!” she shrieks, as you laugh manically. Running the rest of the way to the C-141, making 'woosh' noises the entire time, you pull up short of the hatch near the front of the fuselage and set down your RIO. She's thoroughly pissed, probably- she HATES that shit- ever since the first time she demanded a piggyback ride. At the time, you'd decided that pigs were far too undignified for a young USN witch to ride, and, as a RIO, she needed to appreciate jets anyway. Hence- jet rides. It probably didn't hurt that you'd been listening to iron maiden at the time, and aces high had just finished playing. (1/2)
Pausing a second, you catch your breath and laugh, stepping up the short ladder. Inside, you smell something. Something you hate. Dirt and gunpowder. Turning your head slowly, you see the interior of the big cargo jet is full of Soldiers. Paratroopers- the “AA” patch standing out on their shoulders. The loadmaster, of the bird laughs. “MAC rules.” he says, pointing to a seat at the end of one file. “Bird had some empty spaces. Looks like your little group just fills 'em!. Hope you like Paratroops, we're flying wake-pearl-miramar. You'll get to deal with 'em for about nine hours. [x] Maverick and goose are last! Sucks to be them! Haha! You look at the available seats. Then out the door. Then back at the seats. Then to the loadmaster, who just shrugs. Then back to the seats. And you pick the one that'll put you between Slider and Merlin. And it'll also put maverick and goose at the end of your little line- right next to the paratroopers. If you know maverick, she'll park next to the guy at the end of the file and flirt with him nonstop the entire flight. She might be into girls, you can't tell, but she's a hell of a tease, when she gets going. And you've been on the receiving end of that. Merlin sits next to you, and, as predicted, maverick sits next to a paratrooper- scowling at you as she walks past, but making no indication of her displeasure. A few hours in, she and one Corporal 'dizzy' Flores are chatting away like old friends- apparently he's a pretty laid back guy. (1/2)
Merlin falls fast asleep within a few minutes of the birds going wheels-up, and the guy across from you does the same, as do most of the rest of the paratroopers. A few of them talk for a while, but, on a flight this long, there's painfully little to do. The -141 is big enough to get up and walk around in, a little, but there's nothing to see out the porthole windows- unless you consider vast expanses of unbroken ocean 'something', which, upon reflection, you don't. A brief stopover at wake lets you stretch your legs, but the one at pearl gives you a chance to call home. Your aunt and uncle live pretty close to the base, and could go down to your place near san deigo and get your wheels, but you could probably do that later, as well. Yeah, he's Army, and a tank commander, at that, but you need another poncho liner, apparentlyYou've got enough time, you decide, to try and call your brother in Europe and you mom. The payphones on base are all located in a long common building- you find one at the end of a row and plug in a few quarters. Dialing from memory, the phone rings a few times, and your little sister answers. “Jessica!” you say, surprised. “Hey, put mom on, will ya? I need to talk to her real fast and I don't know how much time I've got to chat” “oh, ok... “ she says, and you can almost hear the pout. You hold the receiver away from your ear in anticipation of her next move. “MOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM! Phone!” she yells- loud enough a few other people look over, then go back to their own conversations. “Hiya mom!” you say when you hear her pick up in the other room. “hey, just calling real fast to let you know the squadron is going to Miramar!” Your mom laughs. “really? That's great! We'll have to come visit!” “I look forward to it! Hey, why's Jessica home?” She laughs again. “Summer, dear. They're all home for the next month or so” “oh” you'd forgotten about that. “well, hey, I'm at pearl, at the phone exchange, and our rides are refuelling. I gotta call Jake, so...” you trail off. “ok, I love you! Proud of you! I'll let your dad know!” “'k, great. Love you mom!”(1/3)
You hang up and dial the next number- collect. “Go for Big Poppa J” You hear. “Jake, You shithead, the hell are you on about?” You ask. “Heeey man! I thought you were someone else I knew.”“Blonde? Nice tits?” “How'd you guess?”You have to laugh at that- he's nothing if not predictable. “ hey, listen. I need another poncho liner. Yes, the new girl is already stealing mine. Ya know what? Send like, three. I'm stateside for the next five or six weeks.” “No problem!” your brother says. “hey, gotta go. Something came up, one of my soldiers got arrested or something. Fucking drunks” You laugh again. “Yeah, I think I need to go too. All them nasty grunts are getting back on the bird.”“later bro!” “later”You hang up. (2/3)
The rest of the flight is simple enough, except for one as-yet-unmentioned detour. You only notice it when someone yelling from the back of the bird wakes you up from your plesant nap. “OUTBOARD PERSONEL STAND UP” Oh, bloody hell. They're jumping. You must be out over that bigassed base in the desert. Still, it's a pretty rare chance to see a jump from inside the bird. They move quick, too, Ready to jump within the first minutes of their initial orders. You're forced from your seat and have to move to the front of the aircraft as the line of jumpers gets in the doors on either side of the fuselage. When they start going, they go fast. The lines of paratroopers are almost gone before you realize it, as your ride turns away and heads for Edwards AFB. This bird's pilot is either tired, or just not as good as the greyhound's. The big bird bounces off the runway once before settling down, eventually rolling to a slow stop. You grab your bag and deplane, happy to be back in the world, as your dad called it. You're directed to a building on Yeager blvd- where a grey passenger van sits next to a pickup, towing a small flatbed. On the flatbed... oh. Oh, your mom must have called your aunt and uncle. She must also be psychic, since you had no way of knowing you were going to land here, and they would have needed a couple hours to get your bike. But... oh man. They got your bike![] Bike![] Greet aunt and uncle, find out how they knew![] Stretch legs, look longingly at bike, greet aunt and uncle, ride in passenger van, as the navy expects you to(3/3)

[x] Greet aunt and uncle, find out how they knew![x] Bike!“uncle Gary! Auntie!” you cry, dropping your bag and hugging your aunt and shaking hands with your uncle. “Sorry I'm a bit gamey. Been in Airforce cargo jets all day” “It's awrat” your uncles says, spitting out a tobacco chew. “Yer momma called 'n let us know whur you was gonna be landin. Got to figguring you'd want yer grandaddy's bak.” Your aunt nods. “She said You'd probably be landing here, since there was some kind of training with the guys from the base over there going on. Called us a few hours ago.”You run your hands over the bike, your uncle moving to help you release the cargo straps and get it off the trailer. “did you guys have any trouble getting it?” You ask. “Naw” your uncle says. “Yer neighbors reggonized us from that gittogther you had afore ya want on cruise. Helped us get the bike on the trailer. Said yer dog was doin fine.” You smile- you dog, whom you got from a guy named Rufus, is also named Rufus. You're also pretty sure he's less 'dog' and more 'wolf' but you can't prove it. A small cough from behind you interrupts you. “oh!” you say, grabbing merlin's shoulder and bringing her in front of you. “This is my RIO, Samantha Wells. We call her Merlin” You say. She smiles shyly at your aunt and uncle. “she's really shy” you offer with a shrug. “Looks young 't be flyan wit ya, boy” your uncle says. “I... I'm 15!” Merlin says, and your uncle chuckles. “I was rat. Too young to be flyan widja. Help me git this down” he says, moving your bike back to the ramp on the trailer. “15?” your aunt asks. “You must have just gotten out of the academy. I remember when my sister- his mother” she indicates you, at that “was there. But that was ages ago.” (1/2)
“well, alrat.” Your uncle says, interrupting your aunt, who can really get going when she starts down memory lane “Well, Boy, we caint stay 't chat, left Joe 't mind the house fer the day, and I betchya he's got the neighbor girl over” Your aunt flushes the most amusing shade of crimson, and your uncle laughs. “Ya keep in touch now, ya hear?” he says, getting in the truck. Your aunt nods. “call sometime, ok? We'd like to visit” You nod. “of course! I'll let you know the first chance I get.”They drive off well before the passenger van- but you're not riding in the passenger van, are you? “hey Merlin!” Maverick yells. “you don't hurry up you're sitting in back!” Merlin shakes her head. “I'm staying with my pilot” she says. Your family is too good to you. The bike's got a full tank, and you know you left it dry, and your uncle taped a 50 to the fuel cap, along with a note- “for snacks” it says. The saddlebags have your leather jacket with your patches. You grin. Today? Today is a good day. [] Drive normally. [] beat the LIVING HELL out of that passenger van. [x] beat the LIVING HELL out of that passenger van. You want to be settled into the Student lodging before they even arrive. “you ever rode on a bike before” you ask merlin, grabbing your bomber jacket and tossing it to her. “Once” she says, looking at your jacket. “what...?”you grin, putting on your aviators. “Put it on. We're gonna be settled in before they've even hit the gate.” The jacket, predictably, is a few sizes too large, and fits her like a tent. Still, it's something a hell of a lot more significant than her khakis, and the night air is a bit cool, probably somewhere in the 60s. You're looking at a bit over 140 miles as the crow flies, 160 with the route you'll have to take. Your uncle, man that he is, left directions- take 58 east till I15, then follow that south. Really good burger joint just south of Barstow- typical uncle Gary. The passenger van will probably have to stop somewhere- they haven't eaten since the stopover at wake either, and that's been more than a few hours gone. The Harley fires up with it's distinctive full throated rumble, and Merlin, almost daintily, gets on behind you. You gun the throttle and the bike responds just like it always has- roaring loud enough the windows in the van rattle. Laughing like a maniac, you peel out, hitting the nighttime roads with wild abandon. (1/2)
You've settled solidly into 'hooligan' mode as you hit I-15, Running the bike for almost all it's worth. You stop for gas- and burgers- somewhere near march field, then continue on, the passenger van long a fading memory in your rearview mirrors. Merlin, Ever the sensors operator, pokes you once or twice, helping you evade a few speed traps. You've reported in- and been assigned your student lodging by the time the van makes the gate. You're not Quite settled in- you've not managed to totally thrash the place, yet, but you're well on the way. The Duty desk said you'd need to report in to, what he called 'the usual jerkoff greeting' and that there's always a formal dress gathering at the O club for incoming top gun students that night, and that you're the last of the current class to arrive. [] Conquer jetlag! If you sleep now, you'll be well rested and up to speed tomorrow. [] Go out and watch the incoming jets. Flight ops continue all night. [] Go grab more food. Fuck if that little burger was enough. (2/2)

[x] Go grab more food. Fuck if that little burger was enough. [x] Go out and watch the incoming jets. Flight ops continue all night. Merlin, predictably, Hit the rack first thing, barely bothering to kick off her shoes. You, though, you're still hungry. Heading back out, quietly, you Manage to get downstairs in time to see the rest of the squadron straggle in. Grinning, you wave, and Slider flips you the bird, while Ice glares doom at you. You find a 24 hour fast food joint without much trouble, and, grabbing a few more burgers, as well as fries, you head back to the base. You manage, without much trouble to find a great parking spot at the west end of the runway, and watch the fighters heading out. The class before yours will be the last 'official' class of the 80s- the new year will have come and gone by the time you're class is done. You'll be able to see your family- well, most of it, in a week or two, you think, and you're actually in a place where you'll have weekends off to carouse. 'course, you're not too sure about the carousing anymore, you've got a young, impressionable RIO to look out for. Part of you still wishes Orion hadn't resigned after that shit with Ice, but you can hardly blame him. You sit like that for a long, long time, just enjoying the night. It's well past midnight local when you head back to Your assigned quarters. Your Seabag is sitting outside, as well as a set of dress whites, just cleaned today, along with a note taped to them both- “thought you might want this stuff, almost forgot it. Sent it with your girls – Gary” taking it inside, you drop it on the floor of the unoccupied bedroom, and hit the sack. It's been a long day, and you're going to need your sleep for Monday.
and that's it for this evening. WE'll be back, barring bad luck, about this time next week. Till then, ladies and gents.
