EVENT
One day, while checking the traps around the perimeter of the village, the tribe discovers a man at the bottom of one of the spiked pit traps! He is very much dead, a sharpened stake clean through his chest, but the stripes on his cheeks are visible, as he stares blankly up at the sky with disbelieving eyes; he is one of the hostile tribe.

The stranger's copper spear lies nearby, broken and bent. A handful of footprints lead back into the forest and from there, to the river. There is no sign of anyone else. Many of the tribe grasp what this must mean though - the man was part of a scouting party.

Action Points: TWO

A) Send out scouts (specify direction)
B) Send some hunters out to hunt game and catch fish
C) Gather resources
D) Have your wise ones research something (specify)
E) Hold a cultural event
F) Craft specific objects
G) Other
H) Ask the elders for advice (No cost)
>>
H. I needs me some guidance
>>
Aw shizzle. Bumpity bump agaaaain.
>>
>>20649521
G, can we take his copper spear to see if they have another/more effective way of forging them?
And D, work on carpentry some more, that's always useful, both for gates and walls.
>>
>>20649537
The elders are up for blood! With the discovery of the body and the footprints nearby, they fear that soon, the tribe may be attacked. Opinion is divided on whether the tribe should focus on attack or defence however.
>>
B) BUT! let's look if any animals fall into our traps.
G) lets train our warriors some more. It will make them extra deadly!
>>
>>20649647
If that's the case, I say we turtle, and shoot them down with bows when they approach, and spear them if they try to rush the gate. Although it might be good to attack first and scare them away from the copper...
>>
>>20649678
I think we should roll on attack. We already know that they don't currently have bows and that gives us an advantage as far as being concealed and firing from cover so if we develop some tactics to lure them into the woods or some such we could crush them more easily when we send out our attack force. Defensiveness is the sign of decline in empires.

So G check out dat spear and D. Would studying basic tactics count as elders research?
>>
>>20649736
Tactics are not an area that can be researched. All tactical advances will be a result of decisions you, the players, make. On this scale, I've decided to keep things simple, but once you start fielding more and more advanced types of troops, I'm going to be incorporating a map and unit types. When that happens, I'll inform you of relevant information. Maybe at that point, you'll be able to unlock new unit abilities via research, but for now, it's not relevant.

Counting votes now.
>>
>>20649736
Ok, I can roll with that. Use women as well for numerical superiority, perhaps? We need to chase all 80ish away and regain our copper.
>>
>>20649815
Well then I change my D vote to agree with this gentleman's D vote >>20649640
So from tactics to carpentry, really.
>>
An examination of the dead foe's spear reveals no great secrets of its construction. It looks like the blade is simply inserted into a split in the shaft, which is then bound tight with animal hide, which in turn shrinks and pulls tighter. It looks like a thrusting spear, like ours.

The wise ones begin looking into more advanced techniques for carpentry, looking for ways to improve on existing techniques, but they claim it may take them some time to yield any results.

UNDER ATTACK!
From the top of the watch tower one bright day, a little after mid-morning, comes a shout of alarm! The lookout has seen a large number of people stealthily closing on the village from the forest upstream, on your side! As the village panics, hurrying to arm themselves, the fighters will need direction.

A) Sortie out and attack the aggressors in the forest
B) Sacrifice some of the warriors to guard the elders and children and escort them away
C) Hold ground inside the village and wait for the enemy to come to us
>>
C) They need to go to us through gate. Then we can slaughter them all!
>>
>>20649994
C! Hold the gate with spears, and shoot them with bows from between them!
>>
>>20649994
C. Is there any way to get men up on the walls to rain down arrows over the walls or at least up on the tallest structures? Then send a large portion of our warriors to the ramshackle gate and wait for a breach. If at all possibly leave a few men in reserve to plug any possible gap that might form.
>>
>>20650045
For that, I think we need to build wall-walks and ladders next turn.
>>
Hey OP, good to see ya! Lots of people around today.

Can we say
C) But have a detachment of warriors sneaking behind enemy lines to hammer-and-anvil them when they close in on the gate?
I fear they might burn our village down so they don't have to deal with our defenses.

How do I make it so only my name is displayed without the hashes and stuff behind?
>>
>>20650079
This is actually a good idea, but how to get them out when the others are closing in?
>>
Once we have killed them all(use these plans>>20650045
>>20650039) we need to make the walk ways and upgrade our bows(longbows anyone?)
>>
C:

Children, it's up to you to protect the elders.

Battle Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY81yYFzgiU

The tribe arms itself with weapons, focusing on presenting an armed and ready mob at the village gates. It doesn't take long before the enemy realises they've been seen! A few spears whistle over the walls, but most simply impact on the timber, not doing much damage at all.

A ripple of concern spreads through the tribe as the attacks start to hack at the gates with axes, calling battle-cries in a manner that unsettles everyone present.

Before the enemy breaks through, you must decide what your heroes are doing! Please state what you wish the following heroes to do in the battle:
Trym Wolfsbane, famed hunter who bested the White Wolf, Hrunti
Rina, priestess of the river spirit, Chani
>>
>>20650254
Trym should lead the warriors in a countercharge to kill the axe-wielders, howling like a wild wolf to scare them. Rina should call on Chani to drown the attackers!
>>
>>20650291
Seconded.
>>
Trym Wolfsbane, famed hunter who bested the White Wolf and Hrunti.
Wolf spirit shall help us in the battle!
>>
>>20650254
The War whoopers need to be silenced. Fuck with their morale with a few well placed arrow shots.
>>
Wolfsbane is in the front of the mob to boost morale
>>
>>20650291
Agreed, Trym should lead a counter charge fighting like the ferocious wolf he is.

Rina should call upon Chani to drown our enemies or help douse fires / rain on our enemies. Alternatively enter trance and sing morale lifting chants
>>
Now that I think about it. I agree about placing Trym at the front but maybe Chani doesn't get river powers, maybe she just became a bamf warrior cuttin' down savages left and right? If that is the case, throw her next to Trym and watch 'em slaughter er'body.
>>
>>20650470
Yeah, I'm not sure either, but we can but ask. Chani seems to like Rani.
>>
>>20650470
Pretty sure she is in her forties. Also, Chani is some water spirit. It makes little sence that she would become a warrior. A better role for her is to call on rain to put out any fires the painted invaders might start.
>>
Trym takes his place among the village's warriors, his presence lending them the courage to stand firm. Rina meanwhile receives slightly confused directions, but ends up in the middle of the mob of villagers. She claims that she can feel Chani's presence, despite the river and shrine being on the other side of the village.

BATTLE TURN 1
The village warriors are holding their position, behind the gate. The mob itself is composed of men and women who have trained a little to hone their skills, armed with a mix of stone and copper-headed thrusting spears, as well as a few bows with flint-tipped arrows.

From the sound of things, the enemy is battering away at the gate with axes. The crude construction is starting to give way.

ORDERS?
> I cannot even begin to give enough options to do the situation justice, so I'm going to leave this one open. Chose how to maneuver and order the villagers. Keep in mind, their discipline is somewhat lax and they may not obey all the orders they are given.
>>
>>20650079
Hold your ground! When they break the gate, shoot and stab through the holes! Howl like Trym and Hrunti! Drive them away from the gate and shoot them some more!
>>
>>20650615
Archers to higher positions, we have shields, give them to the best trained warriors and have them at the front. If the archers can try to have them pick off the enemy before they break through. Keep the ranks deep to keep the enemy from pushing to far in and building too large of a foothold within the walls. Keep a few men back for a ready reserve.
>>
People with shields form a wall with the bowmen behind them firing into the middle of the painted devils.
>>
Have someone take a glance over the wall, then duck away again, and give the archer a direction to fire over the wall. Have everyone shoot 2-5 times.
Then stay at the gate, hacking and stabbing at anyone trying to breach through.
If they are about to break through, let the warriors step away for a second, have the archers fire a last salvo at them, then let the warriors close in again. Have the archers climb onto the huts and give fire support.
>>
>>20650699
I like your archer part and my warrior part. Care to work together on strategery?
>>
Anyone know what happened to Spriggan's undead civ?
>>
>>20650771
I like it, what would be your idea? Though OP probably is at writing already
>>
>>20650858

>>
>>20650873

>>20650682
>>
>>20650885
Thanks, been reading the archives of it(damn timeframe) any idea if he will be continuing the frog people quest he started?
>>
TURN TWO
It doesn't take long before cracks start to show in the door! The lookout on the tower calls a direction and the archers raise their bows, firing sporadically into the enemy, but being largely unable to aim, due to having to aim to fire over the walls. It's doubtful the shooting did much damage. Some of the villagers have to dodge aside, due to some arrows coming down among them, either due to nerves or simple lack of practice.

As the gate starts to break, the few villagers armed with crude shields step to the fore. Despite lacking much practice in using the weapon, they seem much more confident for having something to hide behind! The first real blood is spilled when one of the attackers reaches through a hacked hole in the gate and one of the villagers takes his chance, lunging and gashing open the grasping arm. A great cheer goes up from the villagers!

The gate starts to properly come apart, then the bindings for the wood are hacked apart and the whole construction comes down. There's a brief moment of confused stillness on both sides, then the attackers charge! The archers try to fire one more shot each, but the distance is so little that only a few manage it. As the archers retreat through the front lines, the enemy catches up. The charge into the disrupted front threatens to punch through!

ORDERS
>>
>>20651037
Retreat the archers, place them on the tower / huts and give supportive fire. Place the shield wielders at the front and keep the enemy at bay. Take Trym and some of the best warriors as a mobile reaction force, dealing with any breaches in our line. They shall push the enemy back and get to other breaches. If all else fails, fall back between the huts and use the tight passings as defense lines.

>>20650941

>>20651037

>>
rolled 2, 6 = 8

>>20651037
Try to keep the enemy at the gates, preferably with a concave disposition of our guys
>>
TURN THREE
Several of the archers are killed or wounded as they retreat behind the spearmen. With the enemy so close, the long weapons are less use, but as the warriors behind the front rank start fighting, the enemy is forced to pull back. The fighting at the front is vicious and bloody, with several of the villagers falling to the enemy's thrown spears. When one hits a shield, it just makes the protection too heavy to hold any longer and the one holding it is forced to drop the shield.

Trym leads the warriors in a counter-attack, pushing forward and driving a wedge into the enemy's mass. the effect is enough to drive the attackers back to the gate, re-gaining the ground they took.

Rina starts chanting, her hands clasped. The language is unfamiliar, but those villagers around her suddenly find themselves striking with more force, dodging attacks aimed at them with greater ease and striking in return!

The enemy fall back, hurt and bleeding. many of them start hurling javelins into the villagers, many of whom have already lost their shields.

ORDERS
>>
>>20651142
Go with this.
>>
>>20651489
Form a block of warrior, Trym leading from the front, with Rina chanting in the centre, to aid our warriors, lead a push through the gate, into the enemy beyond and try to take out the javelin throwers and break their lines.
>>
>>20651489
Get those damn spears off of our shields, get the wounded out the way.

Let the bastards run, start firing at them to keep them from getting any ideas about turning back.
>>
Uh-oh, a tie in combat! This will mean divisive orders for the fighters. I will give it just a little longer for a consensus to be reached and if it isn't, I'll go with the divided orders.
>>
>>20651511
Seconding Archer's plan. Ignore mine.
>>
>>20651511
This, I second this entirely.
>>
TURN FOUR
Trym rallies the warriors, leading a roaring charge out the broken gates! Rina's chants grant the villagers the strength they need to make the charge count. The enemy hesitates for a moment, then starts to peel back and retreat, shock clear on their faces. They take as many of their wounded with them as they can, leaving many of their dead on the field. The tribe's fighters are badly mauled as well, with many of them hurt or dead, but the tribe looks to out-number the retreating warriors.

ORDERS
>>
>>20651868
This smells weird, hold ground and tend to the wounded.

Somebody check on the elders and children.
>>
>>20651868
I feel like we should probably pull back and focus on healing up our wounded and easing the pain of our dying. They may be retreating but that doesn't mean they won't turn back around and trounce us because even a cornered mouse fights back.
>>
>>20651893
>>20651900
These, and also gather some surviving attackers for interrogation.
>>
>>20651926
Double concur. Excellent idea.
>>
Am I the only one for taking the field and wipimg the floor with these dicks? They attacked us without provocation and blocked our access to the copper. We need it back to make more, besides, if we beat them we won't have to eorry about them sitting pretty on the other side of the river, planning revenge. I say we press our advantage while we have it, at least forcing the attackers into the river, where we can pick them off with arrows and ask Chani to "take" them.
>>
>>20651979
That's a damn fine way to lead our warriors into an ambush.

Hasn't it occurred to you that they gave way a bit too easily? That they were a little eager to cut and run?
>>
>>20651979
Our people just gained valuable experience from combat but many, many are wounded. So the way I see it, if we send out our unwounded or lightly wounded warriors then who would be protecting the village against any potential hidden force the enemy left behind for just such an outcome? We may find and kill those that retreated but if we lose the entire village then what was the point?
>>
>>20651979
We first need to take care of wounded. Then attack.
>>
>>20652015
And besides that, I forgot to mention that we got lucky that Trym didn't bite the dust in that battle and risking him again might prove disastrous if he dies.
>>
>>20652015
>>20652014
Ach,fine. But
>shock on their faces
I took it to mean the panicked and broke, not reformed for an ambush. But whatever. Vox populi.
>>
>>20652072
Well, there's always firing at them as they run, thin the numbers a bit.
>>
Despite many of the tribe wanting to pursue, Trym holds the vengeful warriors back. Upon re-grouping and gathering the wounded, it is discovered that Trym took an axe blow to the chest without realising in the heat of battle and is bleeding heavily. Luckily, the tribe's wise ones manage to patch him up and staunch the bleeding, for now.

COMBAT RESULT
The enemy have fled the field, leaving 33 dead and 6 wounded.
The tribe suffered 27 deaths, with 41 of the tribe wounded.
The village gate is destroyed and needs re-building.
>>
>>20652137
Aw shizzle we lost a fifth of our people but if I recall their numbers they should be in the high 40s or low 50s. Tend them wounded and interrogate those bastards.
>>
>>20652137
Treat the 47 injured. Bury the 27 of our tribe. And Feed the 33 to their 6.

No point in wasting enemy resources right?
>>
Congratulations on victory in your first major battle! Sorry it didn't go a little faster, but I hope you enjoyed it none the less. It's getting late here in England now, so I feel that's a good point to end the thread for today. If you have any questions, please ask them in the next thread, at 4:30PM, EST on TUESDAY. I'll have a brief Q&A session before the gameplay starts, as it seems, with more people paying attention to the thread, like it'd be a good juncture to clear up any confusion anyone has about how things work.

This is some bad shit. At least they are down to 50 or so, and I'm glad you guys won out, else we'd have lost Trym. We need to patch up both our people and our gate.
